Greenpeace activists accused by Russia of piracy in Arctic

Around 30 Greenpeace activists have been accused by Russian prosecutors of piracy and will be prosecuted for trying to board an Arctic oil platform.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, modeled on the FBI, will question the activists.

The Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, is being towed to the port of Murmansk.

Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said “all those who assaulted the platform, regardless of nationality, will be prosecuted”.

The campaigners were detained on Thursday along with their ship after two Greenpeace activists tried to climb onto a Gazprom offshore platform, in a protest against oil drilling in the Arctic.

Arctic Sunrise was raided by armed Russian men in balaclavas who abseiled down from helicopters. The ship was seized in the Pechora Sea, near the rig.

Greenpeace said the Russian authorities “are holding 30 of our activists”, though that figure was not confirmed by Russian officials.

UN inspectors to return to Syria for other possible chemical weapons attacks

UN chemical weapons inspectors are expected to return to Syria on Wednesday, according to Russian government.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said they would investigate alleged chemical weapons attacks at Khan al-Assal, Sheikh Maqsoud and Saraqeb, according to the Interfax news agency.

They had been preparing to do so when chemical weapons were fired at suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

Last week, the UN inspectors confirmed the nerve agent sarin was used in that attack.

They were not asked to ascertain who fired the sarin-filled artillery rockets that hit eastern and western parts of the Ghouta agricultural belt, killing hundreds of people, but Western powers have claimed it could only have been carried out by Syrian government forces.

The Syrian and Russian governments have challenged them to present firm evidence, and instead claimed that rebels were responsible.

Khloe Kardashian drops her Lamar Odom’s surname on Instagram

On Monday Khloe Kardashian dropped her Lamar Odom’s surname from her Instagram account, now simply going by her maiden name on the social networking site.

Later that same evening, Khloe Kardashian, 29, was spotted heading to dinner at a steakhouse in Topanga Canyon, California, wearing her wedding ring.

She seemed to be in a pensive mood as she valeted her car outside of her dinner destination.

Showing off her newly slim frame, Khloe Kardashian sported white denim trousers and a low-buttoned black shirt as she wore her ombre tresses in flowing waves over her shoulders.

The mixed signals on Monday follow reports that Khloe Kardashian’s marriage is on rocky ground due to Lamar Odom’s alleged drug abuse.

Lamar Odom hasn’t been seen for several days and is reported to be holed up in his downtown LA residence, which is a 45 minute drive from the mansion he shared with Khloe Kardashian in Tarazana.

Last week there were several reports that a split will be announced soon, but no announcements have been made yet.

Meanwhile, Radar has claimed that Khloe Kardashian won’t decide the fate of her marriage to her husband until after she is done filming Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

The reason is said to be because Khloe Kardashian doesn’t want to discuss a decision to divorce on the E! reality show.

“Khloe is steadfast, that she won’t decide whether she wants out of the marriage until she is done shooting the current season of the … show,” a sources tells Radar.

“She has been through so much the last year with Lamar, and Khloe just doesn’t want this to be played out in front of the cameras.

“It’s a very sensitive situation, she is being a trooper and is being a total professional while shooting.”

Michael Douglas reveals jailed son Cameron is in solitary confinement in surprising Emmys speech

Michael Douglas, winner of the trophy for best actor in a miniseries or movie for playing Liberace in HBO’s Behind The Candelabra, closed his speech with a reference to his son Cameron who is serving a lengthy prison term for various drug crimes.

The actor said he hoped “they allow me to see him soon”.

It came in a no-holds-barred speech, which saw Michael Douglas cover everything from smutty jokes to thanking his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones for “her support”, despite their separation.

Backstage, Michael Douglas explained it will be another year before he can visit 34 year-old Cameron.

“I’m questioning the system,” he said.

“At first I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I’ve reached a point now where I’m disappointed with the system.”

Cameron Douglas was convicted in 2010 of selling methamphetamine.

A judge nearly doubled his sentence after he was found guilty of repeatedly breaking prison rules by arranging to get drugs.

Cameron Douglas is scheduled for release in 2018.

“If you happen to have a slip, they punish you,” Michael Douglas said.

“In my son’s case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement.”

Michael Douglas said he’s optimistic Attorney General Eric Holder might change laws involving non-violent drug offenders.

From the stage, Michael Douglas also thanked his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones “for your support”.

That was an attention-getter following the announcement last month that the couple was taking “some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage”.

Catherine Zeta-Jones did not accompany her husband to the Emmys. She was in China this weekend.

Apart from his emotional moments, Michael Douglas also let a few jokes slip out.

“This is a two-hander, and Matt, you’re only as good as your other hand,” he jokes, referring to co-star Matt Damon, who was also nominated for the gong.

“So I can say you were magnificent. You really deserve half of this.

“You want the bottom or the top. The top? I figure that.”

Michael Douglas and co-star Matt Damon also took to the stage during the awards show where they paid tribute to Liberace and introduced a performance by Sir Elton John.

Samantha Lewthwaite: White Widow among dead Islamists in Nairobi’s Westgate mall attack?

0

A dead white woman has been identified among Islamic terrorists killed by soldiers as they stormed Nairobi’s Westgate mall where 62 shoppers were shot dead this weekend, Kenyan officials said.

The claim, made by three sources to news agency Reuters, will fuel speculation that the dead woman is Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of 7/7 bomber Jermaine Lindsay, who is wanted by Kenyan police on a string of terror charges. Police will also investigate the possibility that she is a hostage dressed in one of the terrorist’s clothes.

Asked if it was Samantha Lewthwaite, dubbed the “White Widow”, an intelligence officer said: “We don’t know.”

Moments after the news broke, al-Shabaab, the al-Qaeda affiliated terror group behind the massacre at Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Centre, used their Twitter feed to claim that Samantha Lewthwaite was safe.

There were conflicting reports about the identity of the attackers. Al-Shabaab claimed on Twitter last night that the group was being led by Samantha Lewthwaite, who was married to Jermaine Lindsay, one of the 7/7 suicide bombers.

Known as the White Widow, Samantha Lewthwaite is wanted by Kenyan police over links to a suspected terrorist cell planning bomb attacks.

Known as the White Widow, Samantha Lewthwaite is wanted by Kenyan police over links to a suspected terrorist cell planning bomb attacks

A link between Samantha Lewthwaite and the Westgate attack was made after soldiers claimed they had seen a white woman in a veil shouting orders to gunman in Arabic.

Samantha Lewthwaite converted to Islam as a young woman and married Jermaine Lindsay who went on to be a 7/7 London suicide bomber. She has become a key figure in the terror group behind this weekend’s attack.

She has even been involved in training a group of all-female suicide attackers at camps in lawless neighboring the 29-year-old, who grew up as a normal teenager in Aylesbury before meeting Jermaine Lindsay, a British Muslim, in an online chat room when she was 17. The pair married three years later.

When Jermaine Lindsay was named as one of four suicide bombers who blew up Tube trains and a bus in 2005, killing 52 people, Samantha Lewthwaite initially condemned her late husband’s attack and denied any knowledge of his plan. This was a lie.

More than eight years later, Samantha Lewthwaite is one of al-Qaeda’s main recruiters in East Africa and is an official spokesperson for al-Shabaab (The People), the terrorist group behind the horror in Nairobi.

Samantha Lewthwaite, who is the world’s most wanted woman, has been on the run in East Africa after police foiled a Christmas bomb plot against Western tourists in the coastal resort of Mombasa in 2011.

Nairobi Westgate mall on fire as Kenyan special forces try to bring an end to three-day siege

Kenyan Special Forces were today locked in a fight to the death with Islamic terrorists who have been barricaded inside Nairobi’s Westgate Shopping Centre with up to 40 hostages since Saturday.

Witnesses described hearing four large explosions at the Westgate Shopping Centre followed by the sight of thick plumes of smoke and the sounds of fierce gunfire after the military tried to break the three day siege by gaining access from the roof.

It is feared that some of the gunmen, who are from al-Qaeda affiliated group al- Shabaab, may have blown themselves up, though a Kenyan government minister said that militants had set fire to some mattresses in a supermarket as a decoy.

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said that three of the terrorists have now been killed and that most hostages were now free.

“We think the operation will come to an end soon,” he said.

“We are in control of all the floors, the terrorists are running and hiding in some stores… there is no room for escape.”

The Red Cross has put the death toll at 62 and says 63 are still missing. At least 175 were injured, including children.

The Kenyan interior ministry said “almost all” the hostages have been evacuated from the mall hours after it was rocked by a series of blasts.

In a Twitter message it added “some individuals” have been arrested at Nairobi airport.

In a series of updates, it said 16 Kenyan soldiers had been injured, adding that the focus of the operation is now clearing the building.

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said security forces now have control over all four storeys of the shopping mall and are confident there is no escape route for the surviving terrorists.

He said: “We are doing anything reasonably possible, cautiously though, to bring this process to an end.

“The terrorists could be running and hiding in some stores, but all floors now are under our control.”

As Kenyan soldiers and more armored personnel carriers descended on the mall, a spokesman for terror group al-Shabaab Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement posted on an Islamist website that those held inside will “bear the brunt of any force” used by soldiers against the militants.

The statement read: “We authorize the mujahedeen inside the building to take actions against the prisoners as much as they are pressed.

“We are telling Christians advancing onto the mujahedeen to have mercy for their prisoners who will bear the brunt of any force directed against the mujahedeen.”

Meanwhile, a Twitter account claiming to represent al-Shabaab yesterday claimed that terrorists from seven nations are involved in the attack, including the U.S., Britain and Canada.

The HSM Press Office account, which has been suspended twice, claimed the group were Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, from London, UK; Gen Mustafe Noorduiin, 27, from Kansas City, U.S., Abdifatah Osman Keenadiid, 24, from Minneapolis, U.S., and Ahmed Mohamad Isse, 22, from Saint Paul, U.S; Ismael Guled, 23, from Finland; Abdirizak Mouled, 24, from Ontario, Canada; and Zaki Jama Caraale, 20, and Sayid Nuh, 25, both from Somalia.

BlackBerry agrees in principle to be bought by Fairfax Financial for $4.7 billion

BlackBerry has agreed in principle to be bought by a consortium led by Fairfax Financial for $4.7 billion.

BlackBerry has announced in statement that Fairfax, its largest shareholder, had offered $9 a share in cash to buy the company.

Trading in BlackBerry shares was temporarily halted in New York pending the announcement.

On Friday, BlackBerry announced 4,500 jobs cuts in a bid to stem losses.

In August, the Canadian company said it was evaluating a possible sale.

BlackBerry said it has “signed a letter of intent agreement under which a consortium to be led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited has offered to acquire the company subject to due diligence”.

The statement continued: “Diligence is expected to be complete by November 4, 2013. The parties’ intention is to negotiate and execute a definitive transaction agreement by such date.”

However, BlackBerry said it was not in exclusive talks with Fairfax and would continue to “actively solicit, receive, evaluate and potentially enter into negotiations” with other potential buyers.

BlackBerry’s financial problems came to a head this year following disappointing sales of its new Z10 model smartphone.

Released in January – after many delays – Z10 has failed to enthuse consumers.

Over the summer, word trickled out BlackBerry had hired a series of advisors to help it explore options.

Adam Levine calls out Lady Gaga on Twitter for being unoriginal

Adam Levine called out Lady Gaga on Twitter for being unoriginal.

Adam Levine, 34, took to Twitter on Friday to air his grievances with the state of pop music, and slyly called out Lady Gaga for contributing to the problem.

To begin his diatribe, The Voice star and Maroon 5 frontman lamented the conventional process of recycling old ideas for new generations, and continued by explaining what he believes to be the premise of good pop music.

While it wasn’t completely clear Adam Levine was taking a shot at Lady Gaga, the 27-year-old singer felt the heat and opted to offer her own response.

If Adam Levine was going after Lady Gaga, he’ll certainly face a firestorm from her army of fans, known as the Little Monsters, some of whom have already responded.

Lady Gaga certainly tweeted a reply to one fan: “@madelinemonster thats us, changing the world. twisting the panties of one popstar at a time.”

She is not the first female pop star Adam Levine seems at odds with, more like the latest.

He’s also got an alleged beef with his Voice co-star Christina Aguilera.

Their on-screen bickering led many to believe the two disliked each other, however Christina Aguilera recently spoke out to dispel the rumor.

In an interview with Fox News, Christina Aguilera said: “We’re both very passionate, but it isn’t personal with Adam. It never has been. We’re just very strong personalities.”

Before gearing up for the new season of The Voice, Adam Levine has been going hard on social media, sharing intimate moments with his fiancée Behati Prinsloo, and reportedly joining his bandmates in the studio to work on their fifth studio album.

According to Deadline, Adam Levine also has joined forces with his pal, Community writer Gene Hong, to create a semi-autobiographical comedy about his life for NBC.

Is Kerry Washington pregnant?

Kerry Washington has been subject to speculation that she is expecting a child on Sunday night as she attended the Emmy Award Ceremony in Los Angeles in a flowing dress.

Kerry Washington, 36, the star of political thriller Scandal, was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series but missed out to Homeland’s Claire Danes.

However, Kerry Washington set tongues wagging once more by wearing a flowing Marchesa gown which may or may not have been hiding the very beginnings of a baby bump.

The beautiful floor length, cream design with rose detailing and gold thread was regarded by many celebrity watchers as just the kind of loose fitting number you would chose if you were in the early stages of pregnancy.

Gossip that Kerry Washington was expecting a child first began to circulate when she married in private with just her parents and sister in attendance last July.

Kerry Washington, wed San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, 32, in Ohio after dating for a year.

So far the actress has kept mum on the baby question although in 2010 when she was engaged to actor David Moscow she told Jet magazine that she was not ready for children.

More recently in July, shortly after her wedding, Kerry Washington told People magazine: “I’m blessed in all areas of my life.”

Mexico tropical storms death toll rises to 110

The death toll of Tropical Storms Manuel and Ingrid in Mexico now stands at 110, the interior minister says.

Another 68 are still missing, believed dead, after a landslide destroyed the village of La Pintada in western Guerrero state.

President Enrique Pena Nieto asked Congress to increase the federal budget in light of the emergency.

Officials are still trying to evaluate the total extent of the damage.

“We are confronting rainfall that has practically been the most extensive in the history of the entire national territory,” President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Sunday.

“Today we can already anticipate that due to the damages that we have seen, our [emergency] funds are insufficient.”

Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said work was under way to establish which areas were worst affected by Tropical Storm Manuel which hit Mexico’s western coast, and Ingrid, which made landfall on its eastern coast last week.

Twenty-four out of Mexico’s 31 states have been affected by the twin storms.

“There’s no point in the government offering us kind words and nothing else,” Alicia Sanchez told the Associated Press news agency.

“They’ve made us promises but I don’t think they’ll keep them,” the Acapulco resident said.

Acapulco’s international airport re-opened for commercial flights on Sunday, a week after it had to close due to power cuts and flooding.

Some 20,000 people are still living in shelters in the surrounding state of Guerrero.

Rescue workers continue to search the rubble and mud for bodies of those buried in a landslide in La Pintada, where some 40 homes were swept away by mud from a hillside.

Touring the site of the disaster on Saturday, President Enrique Pena Nieto said there was little hope of finding anyone alive.

Lt Carlos Alberto Mendoza, who is leading the team of soldiers searching La Pintada, said it was the most daunting task he had faced in more than two decades of service.

“They are doing unbelievable work, hours and hours for just one body,” he said of his team of 16 soldiers.

“No matter how hard the day is, they never get tired of working,” he added.

Continuing rainfall is putting the rescue workers at risk of renewed landslides.

Five police officers died on Thursday when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed into a hillside on its way to La Pintada.

A total of 1.2 million people were affected when Tropical Storm Manuel made landfall on 15 September on Mexico’s south-western coastline.

More than 25,000 tourists had to be airlifted out of Acapulco after the beach resort was cut off.

Just 24 hours after Manuel had made landfall, Tropical Storm Ingrid hit the country’s Gulf coast, causing destruction in Verazcruz and Tamaulipas.

After temporarily weakening, Manuel regained strength and hit Mexico’s north-western coast with hurricane-strength winds and more rain on Thursday.

Forecasters say rains will continue to fall on the Gulf Coast of Mexico and the country’s interior until Tuesday.

Bo Xilai appeals against life term

0

Chinese politician Bo Xilai is appealing against his life imprisonment sentence, reports say.

The former party chief of Chongqing was sentenced to life imprisonment on Sunday. He was found guilty of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

Bo Xilai was removed from office last year amid a scandal which saw his wife Gu Kailai convicted for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood.

He denied all charges in a vigorous defense at his trial.

The downfall of Bo Xilai – who had been seen as a candidate for promotion to the Politburo Standing Committee, China’s top decision-making body – was the biggest political shake-up to hit China’s ruling elite in decades.

“He informed the court yesterday of his request for an appeal following the verdict,” AFP news agency quoted a lawyer with “direct knowledge” of the case as saying.

Another unnamed source quoted by the news agency said Bo Xilai would appeal against the “entire verdict”.

Earlier, the ruling Communist Party said the life sentence given to Bo showed that no one was above the law.

“The resolute punishment of Bo Xilai according to law has fully shown that there are no exceptions in the face of party discipline and state laws,” a commentary in the party-run People’s Daily said.

Many analysts say the case was simply a legal way of getting rid of one of China’s most popular politicians.

Bo Xilai is reported to have erupted in anger as he was sentenced.

Bo Xilai was expected to lodge an appeal but correspondents say few think it will be successful.

Apple sells 9 million iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in three days

Nine million iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C have been sold in three days, according to Apple.

Apple said that sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C had beaten previous launches of new phones.

Apple said demand for the iPhone 5S had outstripped supply and Apple shares rose almost 6% on the news before falling back to trade 4% higher.

The 5S has a fingerprint sensor built into the phone’s main button. The cheaper 5C comes with a plastic back in a choice of colors.

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5S, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly.

Apple said that sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C had beaten previous launches of new phones.
Apple said that sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C had beaten previous launches of new phones.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

Analysts said that while the sales were strong, Apple had made an effort to ensure that the opening weekend was a success.

“Apple was concerned about the public relations angle of a soft first weekend, so they took some steps to strengthen the numbers,” telecom analyst Jeff Kagan said in an email.

“Traditionally users could pre-order devices. Not this year.

“This year anyone who wanted a new iPhone must get into line. That bolstered the lines and strengthened [the] opening weekend from a PR perspective. This upset users, but made for great numbers,” he said.

In a notification to market regulators Apple said it expected sales in its fourth quarter to be at the higher end of its previous announced range of between $34 billion and $37 billion.

Apple also forecast that its gross profit margin would be near the high end of the previously provided range of 36-37%.

Barack Obama renews gun law calls after Washington Navy Yard deaths

Barack Obama has reiterated calls for changes to US gun laws at a memorial service for the victims of last week’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

President Barack Obama said tears were “not enough”.

He told mourners Americans must insist that “there is nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work”.

Twelve people were killed last Monday by contractor Aaron Alexis, who was himself shot dead by police.

Aaron Alexis, 34, reportedly had untreated mental health difficulties.

Barack Obama called on Americans to abandon their “creeping resignation” to mass shootings.

Acknowledging that “the politics are difficult” – a reference to his failure to get measures through Congress earlier this year – the president said change would not come from Washington.

“Change will come the only way it ever has come, and that’s from the American people,” Barack Obama told the crowd.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama met privately with victims’ relatives ahead of the shooting, the White House said.

Typhoon Usagi: At least 25 people killed in Guangdong province of south China

At least 25 people died after Typhoon Usagi has hit Guangdong province of south China, the government has said.

Winds of up to 110 mph were recorded in some areas, toppling trees and blowing cars off roads. Its victims drowned or were hit by debris.

Typhoon Usagi has affected 3.5 million people on the Chinese mainland.

Trains from Guangzhou to Beijing have been suspended and hundreds of flights from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong have been cancelled.

However, Hong Kong has escaped the worst of the storm.

Weather officials say that the ferocity of the storm has abated as it progressed into southern China, but financial markets in Hong Kong were closed for part of Monday morning.

More than 80,000 people were moved to safety in Fujian province and the authorities have deployed at least 50,000 relief workers, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Power supplies in many parts of the province and in Guangdong have been cut off.

The typhoon caused 7,100 homes to collapse and led to direct economic losses of 3.24 billion yuan ($526 million), Xinhua added.

At least 25 people died after Typhoon Usagi has hit Guangdong province of south China

“It is the strongest typhoon I have ever encountered,” Xinhua quoted Luo Hailing, a petrol station attendant in Shanwei – in the eastern part of Guangdong province – as saying.

“[It was] so terrible, lucky we made preparations.”

Hong Kong’s port – one of the world’s busiest – shut down as the densely populated territory braced itself for the storm – the most powerful of this year.

Although officials say that Hong Kong escaped the worst ravages of the weather, the South China Morning Post said that Usagi still caused disruption and disarray, bringing flooding to some areas.

More than 400 flights were cancelled or delayed, Hong Kong’s Airport Authority said.

On Sunday evening the Post reported that Usagi’s designation had been reduced from Severe Typhoon to Typhoon and it was moving away from Hong Kong.

On Monday, classes were suspended in Hong Kong, Macau and 14 cities in Guangdong province, Xinhua reported.

Typhoon Usagi – which means rabbit in Japanese – had produced winds of 103 mph as it closed in on China’s densely populated Pearl River Delta.

China’s National Meteorological Centre warned that Typhoon Usagi would bring gales and downpours to parts of the southern coast.

People living in southern China are used to typhoons, but Usagi hit the region with unusual force.

The storm hit just as millions were travelling for China’s mid-Autumn festival – a national, three day holiday when many visit family – leading to flight and high speed train cancellations.

The storm killed two people on Friday as it crossed the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines.

Parts of the Philippines were badly hit by floods caused by the typhoon on Monday.

“The flood water is chest-deep in many areas,” Kay Khonghun, mayor of Subic, a town northwest of Philippine capital Manila, told AFP news agency.

“The rain is pounding and the water keeps on rising,” he said.

Typhoons are common during the summer in parts of East Asia, where the warm moist air and low pressure conditions enable tropical cyclones to form.

Emmys 2013: Liberace biopic takes top awards

Behind the Candelabra has topped this year’s Emmy awards, held in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Liberace biopic, shown on the cable network HBO in the US, won three awards including best TV movie and a best actor award for Michael Douglas.

Breaking Bad was named best drama, while Modern Family took the leading comedy award for the fourth time.

Accepting his first ever Emmy award, Michael Douglas thanked his family and his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas, who have been married for 13 years, announced last month that they were “taking time apart”.

Michael Douglas also thanked his co-star, fellow nominee Matt Damon.

“You’re magnificent,” he said.

The actor added: “The only reason I’m standing here is because of you.”

It was the second consecutive Primetime Emmy award win for Claire Danes in the leading actress category for her portrayal of troubled CIA officer Carrie Mathison in Homeland.

Claire Danes paid tribute to Henry Brommell, one of the writers of the critically acclaimed series, who died in March and received a writing award posthumously during the ceremony.

Her co-star, British actor Damian Lewis lost out in the lead actor category to Jeff Daniels, who was the surprise winner for his role in The Newsroom.

It was the first ever Emmy nomination and win for Jeff Daniels, who plays self-righteous news anchor Will McAvoy.

Jeff Daniels beat stiff competition from Kevin Spacey, nominated for House of Cards, Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm and Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston, who was widely tipped to take the coveted accolade.

As well as taking the top honor of best drama series, Breaking Bad was also successful in the supporting actress category, with Anna Gunn winning ahead of Downton Abbey‘s Maggie Smith and Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss.

Anna Gunn, who plays Skyler White in the hit show, dedicated the win to her daughters.

“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to make people laugh. It’s a joyful way to make a living.”

Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory won his third Emmy for best actor in a comedy.

Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper in the CBS comedy, scored the hat trick after previous wins in 2010 and 2011.

Toby Jones and Imelda Staunton had each been up for best actor and supporting actress for Hitchcock drama The Girl while Charlotte Rampling had been nominated for Restless for best supporting actress in a TV movie.

The glittering ceremony included a performance by Elton John, who paid tribute to the late pianist Liberace.

Elton John, who performed Home Again, said he was “honored” to have been asked to take part in the ceremony for the first time in its 64-year history.

Among those to receive a special posthumous tribute was 31-year-old Cory Monteith, who died in July of a drug and alcohol overdose.

His Glee co-star Jane Lynch described him as a “beautiful soul”.

“He was not perfect, which so many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction,” she said.

The Sopranos star James Gandolfini was also honored during the ceremony.

James Gandolfini, who won three Emmys for his role as a therapy-seeking mob boss in the show, died in June following a heart attack.

Tributes were also paid to producer Gary David Goldberg, Jean Stapleton and Jonathan Winters.

Despite being nominated for 17 awards, American Horror Story: Asylum won just one accolade, while the hotly tipped Netflix drama, House of Cards, also took one award for best directing in a drama series for David Fincher.

US cable and satellite television network HBO led this year’s awards, winning seven Emmys, followed by Showtime with four, ABC and NBC with three each and AMC and Comedy Central with two each.

Nairobi mall attack: Fresh gunfire and explosions inside Westgate complex

Fresh gunfire and explosions have been heard at Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi where militants are said to be holding a number of hostages.

Sixty-eight people have been killed and more than 170 injured since the attack began in Kenya’s capital on Saturday.

Between 10 and 15 attackers – thought to be militants from the Somali al-Shabab movement – are still inside the Westgate shopping centre.

Reporters at the scene said there had been heavy and rapid bursts of fire.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Monday morning it was adjourning the trial of Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto on charges relating to violence following elections in 2007.

The court said William Ruto would be excused for a week to return to Nairobi to help deal with the crisis.

The battle to end the long stand-off is continuing in earnest as conditions for those trapped inside the complex deteriorate.

An unnamed Kenyan security source told the AFP news agency that an army assault was underway.

An AFP correspondent at the scene said he heard about 15 minutes of fierce gunfire which then subsided.

A photographer accompanying the correspondent said troops deployed around the mall were forced to duck for cover.

The photographer said it “sounded as if the shots were coming from somewhere around the mall, or were being fired from a vantage point in the mall”.

The defence forces said on Twitter several hours ago: “All efforts are under way to bring this matter to a speedy conclusion.”

Authorities have emphasised that it is a delicate operation as the safe rescue of the hostages is their top priority, says our correspondent.

Four soldiers had been injured in the attack by Sunday evening.

Kenyan military vehicles have been seen entering and leaving the area throughout Monday morning.

A Kenyan security official said that their forces were receiving foreign assistance, namely from Americans and Israelis.

Overnight reports said that the gunmen were holed up in a supermarket.

Earlier, defense spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said only a small number of hostages were still being held and most had been rescued.

As troops continued to clear the building, it was possible they would come across more bodies, Col Oguna warned on Sunday.

In a news conference on Sunday, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said the country was united and strong in adversity.

“The criminals are now located in one place within the building,” he said.

“With the professionals on site, we have as good a chance to neutralise the terrorists as we could hope for.”

Uhuru Kenyatta said his nephew and the man’s fiancée were among the dead.

President Barack Obama called President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday to express condolences and reiterate “US support for Kenya’s efforts to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice”.

The wife of an American working for the US Agency for International Development was killed, US officials said.

Prominent Ghanaian poet Kofi Awoonor – who was attending a literary festival in Nairobi – also died, as did a Chinese woman.

French, Dutch, South African, Indian and Canadian nationals are also among the foreigners confirmed killed, along with a dual Australian-British national.

Thousands of Kenyans responded on Sunday to appeals for blood donations.

Al-Shabab says it carried out the attack in response to Kenyan military operations in Somalia.

The group, which is part of the al-Qaeda network, has repeatedly threatened attacks on Kenyan soil if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of Somalia.

There are about 4,000 Kenyan troops in the south of Somalia, where they have been fighting the militants since 2011.

George Soros and Tamiko Bolton’s wedding details

George Soros tied the knot with 42-year-old Japanese-American Tamiko Bolton, a health care consultant, in a small, but lavish, wedding at his Caramoor estate in Bedford, an hour away from New York City.

Billionaire investor George Soros got married for the third time.

Tamiko Bolton’s wedding dress was designed by U.S.-based, Lebanon-born Reem Acra, whose gowns have been worn on the red carpet by many stars, including Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez.

George Soros, 83, put a Graff wedding band on Tamiko Bolton’s finger during the half-hour ceremony, according to a source.

Federal judge Kimba Wood officiated at the non-denominational wedding, which was attended only by family members, including George Soros’ five children from his two previous marriages.

The wedding ceremony was followed by a reception on Saturday evening with more than 500 guests at an arts center in nearby Katonah.

Chef Bo Bech of the Geist Restaurant in Copenhagen prepared the food.

George Soros and Tamiko Bolton first dined at Geist when visiting Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009.

It comes as little surprise that the occasion would be marked with a bit of fanfare.

The three-day celebration already began on Friday with a dinner followed by a reception at the Museum of Modern Art with a special preview of the new Rene Magritte exhibit.

The estate in Bedford itself has its own grandiose history as George Soros bought it a decade ago from Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park.

The reception featured Hungarian composer and conductor Iván Fischer, a family friend, who created a new arrangement for the occasion, which was presented with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade performed with the Harris Lane Orchestra.

The reception was festooned with lavish floral centerpieces including a huge hot-air balloon made of flowers.

Mayra Andrade and Roma ensemble Via Romen performed at Sunday brunch.

Guests at the various events included World Bank President Jim Yong Kim and some foreign leaders, including Hendrik Toomas Ilves, president of Estonia; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia; and Edi Rama, prime minister of Albania.

Also expected to have attended were fellow titans of the hedge fund world, Paul Tudor Jones and Julian Robertson.

From the political realm those invited included Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi of California and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, both Democrats.

George Soros, who established one of the first hedge funds in 1969 and is probably best known for his big bet against the British pound in 1992, met Tamiko Bolton at a dinner party in 2008.

Their engagement was announced in August 2012.

Tamiko Bolton, who was raised in California, is the daughter of a nurse and a retired naval officer. She graduated from the University of Utah and holds an MBA from the University of Miami. Tamiko Bolton has been a consultant and entrepreneur working in the fields of health and education.

For George Soros, who has a net worth of $20 billion, according to Forbes, this will be his third marriage. It will be the second for Tamiko Bolton.

In the past three decades, Hungarian-born George Soros has given away more than $7 billion to promote democracy, foster free speech, improve education and fight poverty around the world, according to his foundation’s website on www.opensocietyfoundations.org.

George Soros was divorced from Annaliese Witschak in 1983 and Susan Weber Soros in 2005.

Tamiko Bolton, 42, is a licensed pharmacist and has been a consultant and entrepreneur working in the fields of health and education.

She’s frequent travel companion with George Soros and attended a UN summit on climate change with him.

Tamiko Bolton started an Internet vitamin/dietary supplement sales company and now runs a web-based yoga education business, DealBook reported.

Her Upper East Side apartment was the center of a bunch of drama last year between George Soros and his ex-lover, Brazilian soap opera star Adriana Ferreyr, who sued the billionaire claiming he reneged on his promise to give her the apartment.

This will be Tamiko Bolton’s second marriage.

Miley Cyrus all but confirms her romance with Mike WiLL Made It

Miley Cyrus has all but confirmed her romance with Mike WiLL Made It.

Following her return to the stage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Saturday, Miley Cyrus, 20, was spotted in the arms of music producer Mike WiLL Make It, 24.

Miley Cyrus and Mike WiLL Made It were first linked last week, while a series of personal photographs from their respective social media accounts, as well as a suggestive photo shoot with famed photographer Terry Richardson, have since added fuel to the rumors.

The singer was greeted by her beau who was waiting patiently for her outside her trailer, and the touchy-feely twosome shared a sweet embrace.

Mike WiLL Made It appears to have been given the seal of approval from mom Tish, who happily chatted with her daughter’s rumored new squeeze while they waited for Miley Cyrus to return.

Miley Cyrus’ single status was officially confirmed earlier this week following her split from fiancé Liam Hemsworth as controversy continues to rage around her twerking antics with Robin Thicke at the VMAs.

But it was another performance that had fans raising their eyebrows, when she appeared to choke up while singing the final lines of new single Wrecking Ball at the Vegas music festival.

A rare moment of emotional honesty appeared to undermine Miley Cyrus’ vocals during a performance of the track, her second release from forthcoming album Bangerz.

Jep and Jessica Robertson have four children

Duck Dynasty’s Jep Robertson is Willie’s youngest brother and son of Phil and Miss Kay.

Jep Robertson was born on May 28th, 1978.

He is the “baby” of the family, according to Miss Kay.

Jep Robertson has been married to his wife Jessica since October 7th, 2001 and they have 4 children together: Lily, 10; Merrit, 8; Priscilla, 6; and River, 4.

He didn’t appear as much in the earlier seasons of the show, but has started to change that in the 3rd and 4th seasons.

This was mostly because Jep Robertson helped film certain parts of episodes when the guys ventured into the swampy areas.

Filming and editing seems to be one of Jep Robertson’s big passions along with photography.
