Colombia elections 2014: Juan Manuel Santos and Oscar Ivan Zuluaga face runoff poll

Colombians are voting in a runoff election between incumbent President Juan Manuel Santos and his conservative rival Oscar Ivan Zuluaga.

The campaign has been dominated by discussions on the ongoing peace talks with the leftist FARC rebel group.

President Juan Manuel Santos, who launched the negotiations in November 2012, lost the first round of the vote last month by a narrow margin.

His opponent Oscar Ivan Zuluaga says he will impose tougher conditions in order to carry on with the talks.

More than 32 million Colombians are eligible to vote, but the turnout was low in the first round at just over 40%.

Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, 55, is a former cabinet minister in Juan Manuel Santos’s centre-right government.

Their main disagreement seems to be on how to end a five-decade long conflict with Colombia’s main rebel group, the FARC.

Oscar Ivan Zuluaga initially said he would pull out of the talks and boost military attacks on the weakened rebel group.

That is the line adopted by his mentor, former president Alvaro Uribe, who was elected senator this year and is still one of the most influential figures in Colombian politics.

Later in the campaign he said he would continue to negotiate with the Farc provided the rebels renounced military action during the talks.

Juan Manuel Santos, 62, is aiming to conclude negotiations by the end of the year.

Government negotiators and rebel leaders have held several rounds of talks in the Cuban capital, Havana.

They have agreed on three points of the agenda drawn up in 2012: land reform, future political participation and drug trafficking, which is allegedly the main source of income for the rebels.

Three other points remain to be agreed on: the rights of the victims, disarmament of the rebels and the implementation of the agreement.

On the eve of the vote, Colombia stopped to watch the national team in its opening match in the football World Cup.

Both candidates were quick to congratulate the team on its 3-0 victory over Greece in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

Polls open at 08:00 local time and close at 16:00 local time. Results are expected shortly after polls close, as ballots are electronic.

Ukraine: Russian embassy in Kiev attacked by protesters

A violent protest sparked outside the Russian embassy in Ukraine, which saw windows smashed, the Russian flag torn down and cars overturned.

Russia accused Ukrainian police of doing nothing to stop the attack, and called it a “grave violation of Ukraine’s international obligations”.

Meanwhile NATO released images which it says back up Ukrainian claims that Russian tanks crossed into Ukraine.

Moscow has denied sending the tanks to help pro-Russian rebels in the east.

A range of images show the T-64 tanks first at a Russian military staging area near Rostov-on-Don, and then apparently inside Ukraine earlier this week.

Unlike Ukrainian armored vehicles, the tanks have no markings or camouflage.

NATO says the pictures “raise significant questions” about Russia’s role in eastern Ukraine.

Saturday’s disturbance in Kiev occurred when several hundred protesters hurled eggs and paint at the Russian embassy.

One petrol bomb was also hurled, windows smashed and flags torn down.

The protesters – some wearing balaclavas – overthrew cars with diplomatic plates. One protester held a sign saying: “Russia is a killer.”

Russia’s protest against the incident was echoed by the US state department: “The United States condemns the attack on the Russian embassy in Kiev, and calls on Ukrainian authorities to meet their Vienna convention obligations to provide adequate security.”

Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko vowed to retaliate against pro-Russia separatists in the east after a military plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire, killing all 49 people on board.

The Ilyushin-76 transport was attacked by separatist forces as it was about to land in the city of Luhansk.

Franz Beckenbauer banned by FIFA for 90 days

FIFA has banned German legend Franz Beckenbauer from all its activities for “failing to co-operate” with its inquiry into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process.

Franz Beckenbauer had been asked to help with a FIFA ethics investigation led by lawyer Michael Garcia.

The 68-year-old was part of the FIFA executive committee that voted to give the tournament to Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.

FIFA has banned Franz Beckenbauer from all its activities for failing to co-operate with its inquiry into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process

He has been banned for 90 days.

Franz Beckenbauer captained West Germany to victory as hosts at the 1974 World Cup, and was coach when they next lifted the trophy in Italy 16 years later.

He then managed at Olympique Marseille and Bayern Munich, where he is now honorary president.

FIFA said Franz Beckenbauer ignored “repeated requests” to assist with an independent investigation into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

No details have been given on what Michael Garcia wanted to speak to Franz Beckenbauer about.

In a statement, FIFA said: “The apparent breach relates to Mr. Beckenbauer’s failure to co-operate with an ethics committee investigation despite repeated requests for his assistance.

“The case is now the subject of formal investigation proceedings being conducted by investigatory chamber member Vanessa Allard as chief of the investigation.”

Eating red meat may increase risk of breast cancer

0

According to a Harvard study, eating a lot of red meat in early adult life may slightly increase the risk of breast cancer.

Researchers say replacing red meat with a combination of beans, peas and lentils, poultry, nuts, and fish may reduce the risk in younger women.

Past research has shown that eating a lot of red and processed meat probably increases the risk of bowel cancer.

The new data comes from a study tracking the health of 89,000 women aged 24 to 43.

A team, led by Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, analyzed the diets of almost 3,000 women who developed breast cancer.

“Higher red meat intake in early adulthood may be a risk factor for breast cancer,” they report in the British Medical Journal.

“And replacing red meat with a combination of legumes, poultry, nuts and fish may reduce the risk of breast cancer.”

Guidelines from the American Cancer Society also suggest limiting how much processed and red meat are consumed.

Meanwhile, a separate study found that women with large numbers of moles on their skin may be at higher risk of breast cancer.

Israel: Terror group kidnapped three teenagers in West Bank

The three Israeli teenagers missing from the West Bank since Thursday have been abducted by a “terror group”, Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu says.

Benjamin Netanyahu said an “intensive operation” is under way to find the two 16-year-olds and one 19-year-old.

The three seminary students went missing near an Israeli settlement north of Hebron as they were returning from evening lessons.

Palestinian officials say they are co-operating with the search.

“Our children were kidnapped by a terror group,” Benjamin Netanyahu said.

An intensive operation is under way to find the three teenagers missing from the West Bank since Thursday

“There is no doubt about that.”

The teenagers have been identified as Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaar – both 16 – and Eyal Yifrach, 19.

They were last seen in the area of Gush Etzion, a bloc of Jewish settlements located between Jerusalem and the predominantly Palestinian city of Hebron.

The Israeli army says it is conducting house-to-house searches in the West Bank.

The search is being seen as the biggest strain on relations between the two sides since a Palestinian unity government was announced in April.

Benjamin Netanyahu has already said he holds the Palestinian Authority responsible for the teenagers’ wellbeing.

In response, Palestinian officials have pointed out that the three went missing in an area under full Israeli control.

Israel has arrested at least 12 people in the Hebron area, they say.

In an earlier statement on the operation, the Israeli army pointed to the 2006 kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and said the three may have been taken to be traded for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Sgt. Gilad Shalit was freed in 2011 after Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas agreed a deal under which more than 1,000 Palestinians were released.

In April, Israel suspended crisis-hit peace talks with the Palestinians when a Hamas-backed Palestinian unity government was announced.

Julius de Boer came to fame as the man who stopped Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles, from attacking Jay-Z in NYC’s Standard Hotel elevator.

Beyonce is now the center of controversy that claimed that she’s been cheating on Jay-Z.

According to Star Magazine, Beyonce has been sleeping with Julius de Boer for a very long time. This is not the first time that publication reported “exclusive stories” about Mr. & Mrs. Carter, they even claimed that Blue Ivy’s parents are getting a divorce.

“Jay definitely thinks that there was and may still be something romantic going on between Bey and Julius,” says a source to an interview with the magazine.

“He wanted to fire Julius last February, but Beyoncé said, <<Julius isn’t going anywhere>>.”

“They’ve spent a lot of time together behind closed doors, he even stayed in her hotel room,” the source added.

This is not the first time that Beyonce was linked to Julius de Boer. Back in 2009 Beyonce was photographed leaving a hotel in Berlin with Julius de Boer who was reportedly smeared with her red lipstick.

Marc Anthony ordered to double child support for Dayanara Torres’ sons

Marc Anthony will pay $26,800 per month in child support for his two sons with Dayanara Torres

Marc Anthony, 45, was previously paying $13,400 a month. Dayanara Torres requested that amount be raised to $123,426 a month in November 2013, citing lifestyle changes, in addition to child support needs. Part of the ten-fold child support increase included the need for a nanny and housekeeper, which would cost Dayanara Torres up to $7,000 a month.

According to court documents, Marc Anthony’s legal team offered $28,000 per month, but the judge ordered $26,800. His team also offered $30,000 per year for travel, but the judge ordered $12,000.

The documents also revealed that the original judgment required Marc Anthony to pay support until the kids were 21, plus college education. The judge terminated support when the kids turn 18, per California law.

Marc Anthony and Dayanara Torres, 39, were married from 2000 to 2004. One week after their divorce was finalized, Marc Anthony married Jennifer Lopez.

Bowe Bergdahl in stable condition at Texas military medical center

0

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was freed last month after five years in Taliban captivity, is in a stable condition in hospital in Texas, officials have said.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 28, arrived in the US from Germany early on Friday and was taken to a military medical center for the next part of his reintegration.

He “looked good”, was in uniform, and saluted, Maj. Gen. Joseph DiSalvo said.

Bowe Bergdahl has not yet been in contact with his family, which officials described as his own choice.

“He appeared just like any sergeant would when they see a two-star general – a little bit nervous,” Gen. Josepg DiSalvo said.

“But he looked good, saluted, and had good deportment.”

Bowe Bergdahl has not yet been in contact with his family, which officials described as his own choice

Bowe Bergdahl arrived at about 01:40 local time and was subsequently driven in a three-vehicle convoy to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston.

Army officers also said Bowe Bergdahl had not yet been in contact with his parents, Robert and Jani Bergdahl, who are not in Texas.

“Family support is a critical part of the reintegration process,” Army psychologist Col. Bradley Poppen said.

“Overall, though it is a returnee’s choice to determine when, where and who they want to re-engage with socially, and I believe the family understands that process at this point in time.”

In the near future, Bowe Bergdahl will work with medical staff on reintegration, the progress of which will be driven by the soldier himself.

“There is no set timeline,” Joseph DiSalvo said.

The focus of reintegration will be on re-equipping the soldier, who is staying in a hospital room, with an “appropriate level of mental and physical stability to effectively resume normal activities with minimal physical and emotional complications”, he said.

Col. Bradley Poppen said: “What we are trying to do is get him to recognize that the coping skills he used to survive this long, five-year ordeal may not be healthy and functional now.”

Bowe Bergdahl has not yet been made aware of the media coverage of the circumstances of his disappearance from a military base in Afghanistan in 2009 nor of the controversy over the deal that saw him exchanged for five senior Taliban commanders held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“Anything surrounding the controversy of his disappearance is not part of his reintegration,” Gen. Joseph DiSalvo said.

Shortly after Bowe Bergdahl’s release, several commentators and soldiers came forward to brand him a deserter and call for him to be punished.

Critics of the prisoner swap, which include some Democrats, have objected to the fact Congress was not given notice of the deal. They say the Taliban detainees are too dangerous to free.

The Pentagon has concluded he left his post in Paktika province without authorization but it is unclear if he intended to desert. The Army has said it will investigate the circumstances of his capture, leaving open the possibility he could be prosecuted for misconduct.

An Army review of the matter will take place after Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s treatment has finished, officials said.

TRUMP sign: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Donald Trump clash over skyscraper sign

0

Donald Trump is fighting with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel over a sign affixed to Trump’s downtown skyscraper.

The 20ft tall T-R-U-M-P sign was placed 200ft above the Chicago River and is backlit by bright lights.

Rahm Emanuel’s office said the mayor believed the “architecturally tasteful building” was “scarred” by the sign.

Donald Trump has said the sign is “magnificent” and “popular” and argued the city previously signed off on it.

It enhances the building, he told NBC News, and said the building itself was “a great piece of architecture, great for Chicago”.

“Cities love the [Trump] brand and we are getting tweets, letters and phone calls from people who just love it [the sign].”

Donald Trump built the Trump International Hotel and Tower six years ago to replace an ageing Chicago Sun-Times building with its own sign

The billionaire blamed Blair Kamin, Chicago Tribune‘s architecture critic, for stirring up controversy with his harsh criticism during the sign’s recent installation.

“If this sign was in Atlantic City or Las Vegas, nobody would care – but it is in Chicago, and in a part of Chicago full of great buildings from the 1920s to the 1960s and onward,” Blair Kamin, a Pulitzer Prize-winner said.

None of the other towers have signs on them, he added, calling the Trump sign an “egotistical overstatement”.

Donald Trump built the Trump International Hotel and Tower six years ago to replace an ageing Chicago Sun-Times building with its own sign. It is now the second-tallest building in the city.

The former tenants of the site agree with Blair Kamin.

“It is, rather, an obnoxious New York interloper, not unlike The Donald himself,” wrote the Sun Times newspaper, which described the sign on its current building as “sociable but not loud”.

Kelly Quinn, Rahm Emanuel’s spokeswoman, told the New York Times the mayor instructed Donald Trump’s office to look into “options available for further changes”.

But passers-by who were asked by NBC News on Friday to share their thoughts generally liked the sign.

Afghanistan elections 2014: Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani face second round

Voters in Afghanistan are deciding who will succeed President Hamid Karzai after run-off polls.

The choice was between former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani.

The head of the election commission said turnout was good and most polling stations had opened but admitted some places had run out of ballot papers.

The Taliban threatened to target voting, and there are concerns that fraud could produce a disputed result.

Leading candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani have campaigned relentlessly ahead of Afghanistan presidential election’s second round
Leading candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani have campaigned relentlessly ahead of Afghanistan presidential election’s second round

It should be the first time that power in Afghanistan has been democratically transferred.

As most foreign soldiers prepare to withdraw by the end of this year, whoever becomes the new leader faces multiple challenges.

Taliban insurgents remain active, the economy is weak, corruption is endemic and the rule of law goes largely unenforced.

About 12 million Afghans are eligible to vote. Polls closed at 16:00 local time but officials said those in line at that time could still vote.

The election commission said 6,204 polling centres had opened, but about 160 remained closed because of security threats.

Abdullah Abdullah won 45% of the first-round vote, with Ashraf Ghani securing 31.6% – neither achieved the 50% needed to avoid a second round.

Both sides have faced multiple claims of fraud.

Correspondents say that a seamless transfer of power would be a significant achievement for Afghanistan and a vindication of international efforts to establish a functioning democracy after the abuses of the Taliban era.

But Afghanistan’s mountainous and remote terrain, coupled with the dilapidated condition of many of its roads, mean that holding a country-wide election is a major challenge. Thousands of donkeys will be deployed to carry ballot boxes to some of the more inaccessible villages.

The preliminary result is expected on July 2 and the final result on July 22.

Ukraine: Military transport plane shot down in Luhansk

A Ukrainian military transport plane has been shot down by pro-Russian rebels in Luhansk, killing all 49 Ukrainian service personnel on board.

Ukraine’s defense ministry said the Il-76 transport plane crashed after coming under anti-aircraft fire over Luhansk.

In a statement it said “terrorists” had “cynically and treacherously” fired on the aircraft.

The plane was carrying troops and military equipment and was about to land at the city’s airport.

It is thought to be the biggest loss of life suffered by government forces in a single incident since Kiev began an operation to try to defeat the insurgency in east Ukraine.

A Ukrainian military transport plane has been shot down by pro-Russian rebels in Luhansk, killing all 49 people on board

Military spokesman Vladislav Seleznov said “preliminary information” suggested all 49 military personnel on board the aircraft – nine flight crew and 40 troops – were killed.

He added that the investigation was just beginning into how the separatists brought down the plane, but initial reports indicated that three “Stinger-like” missiles were used.

The incident came less than a week after pro-Russia rebels launched a series of attacks on Ukrainian forces at Luhansk International Airport.

The airport has been under the control of government forces but the rebels hold most of the rest of the city.

Luhansk is the main city of one of two eastern regions where pro-Russia separatists have declared independence from Kiev.

The “anti-terrorist operation” by Ukraine government forces has left at least 270 people dead over the past two months.

Ukraine’s new President Petro Poroshenko had said that fighting must end “this week” following his inauguration in Kiev last Sunday.

Meanwhile, the US said it was confident that tanks being used by separatists in eastern Ukraine came from Russia.

“Russia will claim these tanks were taken from Ukrainian forces, but no Ukrainian tank units have been operating in that area,” a US state department spokeswoman said.

“We are confident that these tanks came from Russia,” she added.

The appearance of the tanks, filmed in various towns in the Donetsk region, sparked a row between Kiev and Moscow.

Russia has denied allegations that the tanks had entered Ukraine from its territory.

Ai Weiwei helps digital art website The Space

Ai Weiwei is helping to launch The Space – a website dedicated to digital art.

The $13.5 million project will commission and showcase new art for audiences around the world.

Ai Weiwei has given the names of victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China to a 24-hour launch event taking place at London’s Tate Modern this weekend.

He hopes the names will be used to create “a meaningful piece of digital art”.

Ai compiled the list of names of 5,196 student victims via his blog after accusations that shoddy construction work had caused the collapse of thousands of classrooms during the quake.

The dissident artist has made a number of artworks about Sichuan, including Nian (“Remembrance”), a sound installation of the students’ names being recited by 3,444 individuals rallied from a Twitter campaign.

The launch event for The Space at Tate Modern featured a video message from Ai Weiwei from his studio in Beijing.

“It gives another opportunity and a platform for artists or somebody like me to work with. I believe many, many young people and students will love it,” he said.

The Space will feature some 50 new art commissions a year.

Speaking on Friday, launch director Ruth Mackenzie said that not every commission was expected to be a success.

But she hoped that potential “Picassos or Eisensteins” would submit ideas to The Space for a paid commission.

“[Visitors] might come and have a have good laugh because it didn’t work out, or you might come and see history and see the invention of an entirely new art form,” she said.

The launch weekend features a “hackathon” in the Tate’s Turbine Hall with around 150 artists creating digital artworks from scratch over a 24-hour period.

Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson’s interactive digital art work Moon has been loaned to Tate Modern for the event. It is the first time it has been displayed in a UK Gallery.

Alex Graham, who chairs The Space – which originally launched as a pilot in 2012 – described the project as “a gallery without walls”.

The 2012 pilot had more than 1.5 million visits, an average of 40,000 per week.

Japanese passenger punches Delta flight attendant while flying to Honolulu honeymoon

0

A drunken Japanese passenger punched a Delta Air Lines flight attendant while flying from Japan to Honolulu, federal prosecutors said.

Kenji Okamoto pleaded guilty Friday to interfering with the duties of a flight attendant by assaulting and intimidating him.

According to a criminal complaint, Kenji Okamoto was flying first-class from Osaka for his honeymoon last month when flight attendants noticed he was drunk before takeoff and continued drinking alcoholic beverages during the flight.

Kenji Okamoto got upset when one of the flight attendants wouldn’t take his meal tray away, the court document said. The flight attendant told him his hands were full. Kenji Okamoto allegedly “threw a roundhouse type punch” at a flight attendant who intervened in an attempt to diffuse the situation.

The honeymooner struck the flight attendant in his arms, which were raised to protect his head, the complaint said.

The Delta Air Lines flight crew told authorities that Kenji Okamoto later apologized while crying, remained calm for the remainder of the flight and eventually fell asleep.

After crew members restrained him in his seat, “Okamoto apologized for his actions by repeatedly saying <<I’m sorry>> and bowed down on his knees and placed his head on the floor,” the complaint said.

During an interview with authorities, Kenji Okamoto said he’s in the construction business and was “drinking heavily because he was celebrating his honeymoon with his wife … that he married on April 20, 2014”, the complaint said. Kenji Okamoto told authorities that before boarding the plane, he had four glasses of beer and one glass of wine and he continued drinking champagne and wine while on board.

Kenji Okamoto, 30, of Kyoto said the incident happened “like a flash,” according to the court document, and that he doesn’t remember what exactly happened but that he was upset because he felt like he was being disrespected when the first flight attendant wouldn’t take his tray away.

Magistrate Kevin Chang initially allowed Kenji Okamoto to be released on $50,000 bond, but Assistant US Attorney Tracy Hino appealed, arguing that Okamoto didn’t disclose a previous conviction in Japan for assaulting a police officer. Tracy Hino’s appeal provided photos of Kenji Okamoto’s near full-body tattoos, arguing that he is a flight risk and a danger.

Delta banned Kenji Okamoto from flying on the airline, according to Tracy Hino’s appeal.

District Judge J. Michael Seabright granted the appeal to keep Kenji Okamoto held without bail at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center.

Because he was arrested at the airport, Kenji Okamoto never got to enjoy his honeymoon, which was to be spent at a luxury resort in east Honolulu, Tracy Hino said.

Kenji Okamoto faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced on September 22.

GM recalls more than 500,000 Chevrolet Camaro over ignition system fault

0

GM has announced it is recalling 511,508 Chevrolet Camaro cars, mostly in North America, after finding a fault with the ignition system.

The carmaker said a driver’s knee could bump the key fob and turn it out of the “run” position, causing a loss of power.

General Motors said the fault had led to three crashes, causing four “minor” injuries.

In March, GM recalled 2.6 million small cars because of a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths.

In May, the carmaker was fined $35 million for failing to address different defects which have been linked to 13 deaths.

GM has recalled more than 13 million cars in the US this year – more than the carmaker sold in 2013.

In addition to Chevrolet Camaro recall, GM also announced it was recalling 28,789 Saab 9-3 convertibles from the 2004-2011 because of concerns over front seat belt failures and 21,567 Chevrolet Sonic cars from 2012, because of concerns over a transmission fault.

GM is also recalling 14,765 of its 2014 Buicks, because of fears over an electrical wiring fault.

Previous recalls have involved possible faulty seat belts, transmissions and air bags, as well as potential fire issues.

“The Camaro ignition system meets all GM engineering specifications and is unrelated to the ignition system used in Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars included in the ignition switch recall,” GM said in a statement.

Both the US and Iran have promised to help the fight against the insurgency.

Led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the Sunni insurgents have threatened to push to the capital, Baghdad, and regions further south dominated by Iraq’s Shia Muslim majority, whom they regard as “infidels”.

Beyonce and Jay-Z divorce 2014: Did Beyonce cheat on Jay-Z with bodyguard Julius De Boer?

Recent reports claimed that Beyoncé might have cheated on Jay-Z with her bodyguard Julius De Boer, consequently putting the couple’s marriage in jeopardy.

Julius De Boer instantly became famous when he pretty much saved Jay-Z from a vicious attack by his sister-in-law Solange Knowles, as captured in the surveillance video in a hotel elevator following the Met Gala after-party.

Many were skeptical of Beyoncé and Julius De Boer, as they became unusually close to each other. They were even spotted leaving a hotel together back in 2009, with the bodyguard’s lips smudged with Beyoncé’s signature red lipstick.

Meanwhile, other than all the cheating rumors surrounding Beyoncé and her bodyguard, Jay-Z has another headache to deal with. The rapper reportedly split from his longtime business manager John Meneilly, who he considered more of his trusted “consigliore”.

What Executives Do Behind Closed Doors

0

Price fixing, although it resembles the strong-armed business approach one might associate with the criminal underworld, is a white collar crime often perpetrated by company executives.

Just as a few local gangs might get together to agree on who gets to operate in which turf or who might handle the prostitution in a certain area, corporate executives get together in conference calls or at high-powered business powwows and settle secret deals on how pricing for various goods and services might be controlled.

That said, price fixing scams can be so far-reaching into a business sector that they can reach gigantic proportions involving some of the world’s best-known companies and some of the biggest dollar amounts ever associated with crime.

Rolling Stone Magazine recently ran a lengthy article on the Libor fixing scandal that could be the largest crime in terms of dollar losses ever committed. The world’s largest banks in the United States, Europe and Asia, including Barclays, UBS, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and the Royal Bank of Scotland ,have been caught up in that mess. The actual misdeed was bankers reporting false data to British regulators to try to manipulate the London interbank offered rate, which is supposed to be the average rate banks use when they loan money to each other. But some bankers tried to tip the scales their way to enhance specific deals or to make the bank appear healthier than it was, because a better position is appealing to stockholders.

The problem is that an estimated six trillion dollars in commercial and consumer loans use the Libor as a benchmark rate. Tips the rate one way or another and it affects millions of consumers around the world.

Price fixing scams are frequently put into action by companies that are not exactly household names. Look for Ford Motor Company and price fixing online, for example, and you will see Ford is suing auto part suppliers for price fixing. That’s because companies like Ford are too much in the public eye to fix prices. If they change the headlight design of a car that becomes headline news, let alone trying to sneak a price-fixing scheme past the public.

Instead companies like Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., a Japanese company with a client list that included Toyota, Subaru and Nissan, was charged with fixing prices of anti-vibration rubber parts. In November 2013, Toyo settled with the U.S. Justice Department, agreeing to pay $120 million to have an investigation against it dropped..

A series of settlements over price fixing involving well-known and lesser-known airlines has been announced in recent years, but here, again, it is the air cargo side of the business — a little less visible to the average consumer — that has included, to date, 23 settlements by companies that colluded to control prices on air shipping services.

In February, the global law firm Hausfeld LLP, announced that Cathay Pacific had agreed to pay $65 million to settle charges of price fixing for its shipping services. That added to an already impressive list of class action victories that involved All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, British Airways, SAS, Cargolux, Lufthansa and 15 others who paid fines of $3.2 million (Malaysia Airlines) to $115 million (Korean Air) to settle charges against them. In total, the conspiracy has resulted in $758 million in fines that largely get dispersed to Hausfeld’s class action clients who were cheated by the collusion.

Price fixing impacts consumers in two ways. First, controlling prices generally results in artificially high prices for goods or services. Secondly, price fixing can box out competing companies, which hurts their business, resulting in fewer jobs.

Regulators have recognized that Libor fixing has the potential to due considerable harm to consumers as a class and have doled out fines that are among the largest ever meted out for corporate malfeasance. By the end of 2013, financial firms had coughed up $2.3 billion to settle charges of rate manipulation, including Deutsche Bank and Société Générale, which paid fines of $633 million and $606 million, respectfully, to settle charges against them.
