Suge Knight shot during Chris Brown’s pre-VMA party at 1OAK nightclub

Suge Knight was shot during a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown at 1OAK nightclub in West Hollywood, California, on early Sunday morning, August 24, Billboard reported.

The former Death Row Records CEO went into surgery following the incident and is now recovering in the ICU, according to TMZ.

Marion “Suge” Knight, 49, reportedly left the club himself before being spotted by police and sent to the hospital in an ambulance.

He was shot in the stomach, arm and other places, sources told TMZ.

The shooting took place at about 1:30 a.m on Sunday during a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown at 1OAK.

The party is unaffiliated with MTV.

Others in attendance included Tyson Beckford, Robert Ri’chard and apl.de.ap.

Two men and a woman were also shot.

“They were transported to local hospitals and they are expected to recover,” the L.A. Sheriff’s Department said in a statement to People magazine. The shooter is still unknown, but a gang rivalry could be a possible motive, according to TMZ.

About an hour-a-half before the shooting, a fight reportedly broke out between The Game’s entourage and the club’s security guards after the rapper was denied entry into the party. It’s unclear whether that incident was related to Suge Knight’s shooting, TMZ reported.

On Sunday morning, Chris Brown took to Twitter to speak out about what had happened.

“It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes,” the singer tweeted.

“Miss me with the bullshit!”

This is the second time Suge Knight has been shot during a pre-VMA party.

In 2005, Suge Knight was shot in the leg during an event hosted by Kanye West at Shore Club in Miami Beach, Florida.

Hundreds of bubbling methane vents discovered on sea floor between North Carolina and Massachusetts

More than 500 bubbling methane vents have been found on the sea floor off the US east coast, researchers say.

The unexpected discovery indicates there are large volumes of the gas contained in a type of sludgy ice called methane hydrate.

There are concerns that these new seeps could be making a hitherto unnoticed contribution to global warming.

The scientists say there could be about 30,000 of these hidden methane vents worldwide.

Previous surveys along the Atlantic seaboard have shown only three seep areas beyond the edge of the US continental shelf.

The team behind the new findings studied what is termed the continental margin, the region of the ocean floor that stands between the coast and the deep ocean.

In an area between North Carolina and Massachusetts, they have now found at least 570 seeps at varying depths between 50m and 1,700m.

Their findings came as a bit of a surprise.

“It is the first time we have seen this level of seepage outside the Arctic that is not associated with features like oil or gas reservoirs or active tectonic margins,” said Prof. Adam Skarke from Mississippi State University, who led the study.

More than 500 bubbling methane vents have been found on the sea floor off the US east coast
More than 500 bubbling methane vents have been found on the sea floor off the US east coast

The scientists have observed streams of bubbles but they have not yet sampled the gas within them.

However, they believe there is an abundance of circumstantial evidence pointing to methane.

Most of the seeping vents were located around 500m down, which is just the right temperature and pressure to create a sludgy confection of ice and gas called methane hydrate, or clathrate.

The scientists say that the warming of ocean temperatures might be causing these hydrates to send bubbles of gas drifting through the water column.

They do not appear to be reaching the surface.

“The methane is dissolving into the ocean at depths of hundreds of meters and being oxidized to CO2,” said Prof. Adam Skarke.

“But it is important to say we simply don’t have any evidence in this paper to suggest that any carbon coming from these seeps is entering the atmosphere.”

This research, though, does highlight the scale of methane that is under the waters.

Estimates suggest that these undersea sediments are one of the largest reservoirs on Earth, and contains around 10 times more carbon than the atmosphere.

Prof. Adam Skarke and his colleagues estimate that worldwide, there may be around 30,000 of the type of seeps they have discovered.

They acknowledge that this is a rough calculation but they believe that it could be significant.

While the vents may not be posing an immediate global warming threat, the sheer number means that our calculations on the potential sources of greenhouse gases may need revising.

The scientists also found abundant life around many of these seeps, but not perhaps as we know it.

The creatures they describe are termed chemosynthetic, meaning they derive energy from chemical reactions and not from the Sun as do photosynthetic organisms.

Others who have collaborated on the search for seeps say these discoveries are important.

“These are significant geochemically, as they and our research teams found perhaps one of the largest seeps yet discovered with very active methane bubbling and large amounts of frozen hydrates,” said Prof. Steve Ross, from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

“These seeps are also significant biologically, as we have found unique chemosynthetic communities, huge range extensions and increased biodiversity.”

As to the energy potential of these new seeping sources, Prof. Adam Skarke is fairly pessimistic.

The research has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Richard Attenborough dies at 90

British actor and director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90, his son has announced.

In a career that spanned six decades, Lord Richard Attenborough appeared in movies including Brighton Rock, World War Two prisoner of war thriller The Great Escape and later in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park.

California earthquake: 87 people hospitalized in Napa

A 6-magnitude earthquake has struck northern California, causing injuries and damage to buildings.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 03:20 local time four miles north-west of the town of American Canyon, at a depth of 6.7 miles.

At least 87 people have been taken to hospital in the Napa area, with three of them seriously injured.

California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in order to deal with the effects of the quake.

Officials in Napa said in a statement that the quake had destroyed four mobile homes and made 16 buildings “uninhabitable”, as well as causing “approximately 50” gas main breaks and around 30 leaks from water mains.

Three historic buildings in the town had been hit and two commercial buildings “severely damaged”, the statement went on.

More than 10,000 households were without power in Napa, about six miles from the earthquake’s epicenter, and the surrounding area, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company said.

A Red Cross evacuation centre has been set up in a church in the city.

The California Highway Patrol in the San Francisco Bay area tweeted that it was “checking over crossings and bridges for obvious signs of structural integrity”, and asked residents to report any signs of problems.

The site of the earthquake was 51 miles from Sacramento and about 30 miles north-east of San Francisco, where many Twitter users say the earthquake woke them up.

Numerous small aftershocks were also reported on Sunday.

California lies on the San Andreas Fault, which forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, two of the large moving plates that form the Earth’s crust.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and subsequent fires devastated the city.

In 1989, a powerful earthquake struck San Francisco, killing more than 60 people and injuring hundreds.

Ebola outbreak: Democratic Republic of Congo confirms two deaths

Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed two Ebola deaths in the country’s north-west.

They are the first reported Ebola cases outside West Africa since the outbreak there began, although it is not clear if they are directly linked to that outbreak.

So far 1,427 people have died from the Ebola virus.

The speed and extent of the outbreak has been “unprecedented”, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

An estimated 2,615 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola since March.

There is no known cure but some affected people have recovered after being given an experimental drug, ZMapp. However, supplies are now exhausted.

Also on Sunday, a British health worker infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone was flown back to the UK on an RAF jet. It is the first confirmed case of a Briton contracting the virus during the current outbreak.

Several people died in the past month after contracting an unidentified fever in the Equateur region of the DR Congo.

On Sunday, Health Minister Felix Kabange Numbi said two of eight fever victims had tested positive for Ebola.

A quarantine zone would be set up in a 62-mile radius in Boende where the cases had been registered.

He said this marked the seventh outbreak in DRC. The virus was first identified here in 1976 near the Ebola River.

Felix Kabange Numbi added that further tests were being carried out.

On Saturday, Sierra Leone parliament passed a new law making it a criminal offence to hide Ebola patients.

If approved by the president, those caught face up to two years in prison.

The move came after the Ivory Coast closed its land borders to prevent the spread of Ebola on to its territory.

The country has already imposed a ban on flights to and from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Gabon, Senegal, Cameroon and South Africa have taken similar measures.

The WHO says travel bans do not work, and that what is needed is more doctors and officials to help trace those infected with Ebola, as well as more mobile laboratories.

The Ebola virus is spread between humans through direct contact with infected bloodily fluids. It is one of the world’s deadliest diseases, with up to 90% of cases resulting in death.

It appears that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s six-year marriage is on the rocks.

Nick Cannon, 33, confirmed the news himself during an interview with The Insider earlier this week.

“There is trouble in paradise,” Nick Cannon said on Thursday, August 21.

“We have been living in separate houses for a few months.”

An insider told Us Weekly that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have been apart since June.

Libya: Tripoli airport seized by Misrata forces

The Libyan Central Shield says its fighters have captured Tripoli’s international airport after ten days of clashes with nationalist armed groups.

Islamist-affiliated forces from Misrata and other cities took over Tripoli’s airport from the Zintan militia, which has held it for three years.

Libya’s new parliament, largely opposed to the Islamists, condemned the move.

Violence in Libya has surged recently between the rival groups who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 uprising.

Tripoli’s international airport, Libya’s largest, has been closed for over a month because of the fighting.

Hundreds have died since fighting broke out in Tripoli in July. Millions of dollars in damage has been caused to the airport.

Libya’s new parliament, the House of Representatives, said the groups now in control of the airport were “terrorist organizations”.

The new parliament, which is based in Tobruk because of violence in Libya’s main cities, has repeatedly called for the militia groups wielding power in the country to disband the join the nascent national army.

But so far, few have shown a willingness to disarm.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Misratan-led militia alliance called for the previous Islamist-dominated parliament to reconvene.

Umar Humaydan, who was himself a spokesman for the previous parliament, said that the move was necessary to “save the country’s sovereignty”.

It follows claims by the Misratan-led forces that they were targeted by mystery airstrikes for a second time this week.

However, correspondents say the call is likely to fall on deaf ears.

There were unconfirmed reports of battles continuing between rival armed groups on the outskirts of the city on Saturday evening. Explosions could also be heard in the capital.

The capture of the airport is a setback for Zintani forces, who are loosely allied to Gen Khalifa Haftar.

The ex-army chief, whose forces mainly operate in the east of the country, launched a campaign earlier this year against what he termed the “Islamist-dominated” government.

The country’s militias and political parties alike have had shifting alliances over the last two years.

Thousands have fled their homes to escape the violence.

More than three years after Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed, Libya’s police and army remain weak in comparison with the militias who control large parts of the country.

Cliff Richard questioned by police over alleged historical assault

Cliff Richard has been questioned by the UK police in connection with an alleged historical assault.

Cliff Richard, 73, voluntarily met officers and was not arrested or charged.

It comes after police searched his home in Sunningdale, Berkshire, on August 14 as part of their investigation.

Cliff richard denies the alleged offence, saying the claim of an assault at a religious event in Sheffield in 1985 is “completely false”.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed it had spoken to a 73-year-old man.

A police spokesman said: “The man was interviewed under caution but was not arrested. He entered South Yorkshire Police premises by arrangement.”

A spokesman for Cliff Richard said: “Today Sir Cliff Richard voluntarily met with and was interviewed by members of South Yorkshire Police. He was not arrested or charged.

“He co-operated fully with officers and answered the questions put to him.

“Other than restating that this allegation is completely false and that he will continue to co-operate fully with the police, it would not be appropriate for Sir Cliff to say anything further at this time.”

The allegation against Cliff Richard relates to an assault claim at an event featuring preacher Billy Graham at the Bramall Lane stadium in Sheffield in 1985.

Eric Garner Death: Thousands Protest in Staten Island over Police Chockhold Death

0

Thousands of people gathered in the New York borough of Staten Island near the site of Eric Garner’s death to march in protest against police killings.

Eric Garner, a 43-year-old black man, died in July after being placed in a chokehold as police arrested him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.

The march was led by the Rev. Al Sharpton and relatives of Eric Garner.

Eric Garner died weeks before black teenager Michael Brown was killed in Missouri.

Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead on August 9 after being stopped by a police officer for walking in the street in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson.

The killing sparked days of protest culminating in the deployment of the National Guard, which was withdrawn on August 22.

Some of the protesters in New York displayed banners saying “Black lives matter” while others demanded justice in the cases of both Eric Garner and Michael Brown, as a large police contingent looked on.

Some shops were closed for the day on August 23, amid fears the protest could turn violent as happened in Ferguson earlier this week.

However, civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton repeatedly warned demonstrators that such action would not be tolerated. He said that Eric Garner’s death was a defining moment for police nationwide.

In the event protesters filed peacefully past the spot where Mr Garner was held to the ground by police as the marchers processed towards the Staten Island prosecutor’s office.

“We will prevail,” the black reverend – who was accompanied by Eric Garner’s widow and several of his children – told the crowd.

“They will not cry alone.”

The demonstrators demanded the prosecution of Daniel Pantaleo, the suspended police officer who arrested Eric Garner. Some chanted “Hands up, don’t shoot” – the slogan often used by the Ferguson demonstrators.

A New York grand jury is considering criminal charges against Daniel Pantaleo.

Eric Garner, who had asthma, was heard on a witness video shouting “I can’t breathe!” as police arrested him.

A medical examiner has ruled his death a homicide.

However, the New York City medical examiner’s office said other factors contributed to his death included asthma and heart disease.

Eric Garner’s death provoked an outcry, especially after a video of Officer Daniel Pantaleo placing him in a chokehold became public.

Chokeholds are banned by the New York Police Department and Commissioner William Bratton has ordered an internal review of training.

Maria Shriver has been dating Matthew Dowd since November 2013

Maria Shriver, the estranged wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger, is reportedly dating political analyst Matthew Dowd.

Maria Shriver, 58, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, 67, separated in 2011 after he confessed to fathering a lovechild with their maid, Mildred Baena, 14 years prior.

The NBC News special correspondent filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger since 2011, but it has yet to be finalized.

Maria Shriver has reportedly been seeing Matthew Dowd since November 2013 and earlier this month they attended actress Cheryl Hines’ wedding to Robert Kennedy, Jr. in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, together, according to the New York Post.

Maria Shriver is a member of the Kennedy family as her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a sister of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Edward Kennedy.

Matthew Dowd, 53, was the chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign.

Lauren Bacall’s dog to inherit $10,000

Lauren Bacall’s will has revealed that the movie icon has left $10,000 for the care of her beloved dog, Sophie.

Lauren Bacall, who died in Manhattan, New York earlier this month at the age of 89, left behind a $26.6 million estate.

According to the New York Daily News, Lauren Bacall’s grandsons will inherit $250,000 each, two longtime employees will share $35,000 and her papillon, Sophie, will be taken care of thanks to a $10,000 lump sum.

Papers were filed on August 22 in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court.

The rest of Lauren Bacall’s estate, including her apartment in the Dakota building and its contents, will be split between her three children, Leslie Bogart, Stephen Humphrey Bogart and Sam Robards, who will become the dog’s guardian.

Lauren Bacall’s kids have also been named the executors of her estate, and they will take charge of the actress’ likeness rights, although in the will, signed late last year, the actress stipulated: “I request that my children respect my wish to keep private certain personal letters, writings, diaries and other papers or memorabilia.”

Sierra Leone: Hiding Ebola patients is illegal

Sierra Leone’s parliament voted to pass a new amendment to its health act, imposing possible jail time for anyone caught hiding an Ebola patient.

Hiding an Ebola patient is a practice the World Health Organization (WHO) believes has contributed to a major underestimation of the current outbreak.

Those caught face up to two years in prison, the justice minister said. The measure still needs to be approved by the president.

Earlier, Ivory Coast closed its land borders to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus on to its territory.

The WHO says the measures – taken by other countries as well – are counterproductive.

So far 1,427 people have died – more than in any other Ebola outbreak.

The number of cases now stands at 2,615. The speed and extent of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa are “unprecedented”, according to the WHO.

Ivory Coast, the largest economy in francophone West Africa, had previously imposed a ban on flights to and from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

“Faced with new outbreak sites and the reactivation of old sites… the Ivorian government decides to close its land borders with sister republics Guinea and Liberia,” it said in a statement on Friday.

Gabon, Senegal, Cameroon and South Africa have taken similar measures.

The WHO says travel bans do not work, and that what is needed is more doctors and officials to help trace those infected with Ebola, as well as more mobile laboratories.

On Friday, the WHO’s Dr. Keiji Fukuda expressed concern over so-called “shadow zones”, areas which cannot be reached and where patients are not being detected.

The organization confirmed 142 new cases of the disease had been reported since 19 August, as well as 77 deaths.

Speaking at a news conference in the Liberian capital Monrovia, Dr. Keiji Fukuda said combating the disease would take “several months of hard work”.

“We haven’t seen an Ebola outbreak covering towns, rural areas so quickly and over such a wide area,” he added.

Ebola has no known cure but some affected people have recovered after being given an experimental drug, ZMapp. However, supplies are now exhausted.

Why Ebola outbreak is underestimated?

  • Many families keep sick people at home, as there is no cure
  • Many health centers have closed because medical staff have fled
  • In Liberia, treatment centers are overwhelmed
  • The existence of “shadow-zones”, areas where there are reports of Ebola but which cannot be accessed because of local resistance or lack of staff

Beijing Independent Film Festival 2014 shut down on its opening day

Chinese authorities have shut down the 11th Beijing Independent Film Festival on its opening day, August 23.

Organizers said they had been under pressure from officials in recent days to cancel the festival, which had been due to run until the end of the month.

An attempt to move the venue from a suburb was blocked by local police.

It has been a rare opportunity for independent Chinese film makers to show their work, but is regarded with suspicion by the government.

The annual festival has suffered disruption in the past, including having its electricity supply cut.

The organizers said they had received a series of warnings from officials to cancel the festival – one report said they complied after being briefly detained on Friday.

Security was tight at the venue in the Beijing suburb of Songzhuang, with about two dozen men blocking the area and preventing around 30 film directors and members of the public from entering, the Associated Press reports.

The men, claiming to be villagers, tried to stop anyone from photographing or filming the scene, AP says.

The Chinese government keeps a tight control on information and the media – and is suspicious of independent films that could contain criticism of the Communist party and its policies.

President Xi Jinping has stepped up repression of government critics since coming to office with the arrest of hundreds of bloggers.

Iceland: Bardarbunga volcano eruption sparks red alert for aviation industry

Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano eruption sparked a red alert for the aviation industry, meaning significant ash emissions are likely.

Iceland’s meteorological office has warned that a small eruption under an ice cap has begun at Bardarbunga.

The air space over the site has been closed, but all Icelandic airports currently remain open, authorities say.

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing an ash cloud that severely disrupted air travel.

The red alert is the highest warning on the country’s five-point scale.

A team of scientists was flying across the region on Saturday afternoon to monitor seismic activity.

Bardarbunga volcano eruption sparks red alert for aviation industry
Bardarbunga volcano eruption sparks red alert for aviation industry

“The eruption is considered a minor event at this point,” police said in a statement.

“Because of pressure from the glacier cap, it is uncertain whether the eruption will stay sub-glacial or not.”

Bardarbunga is part of a large volcano system hidden beneath the 0.31-mile thick Vatnajokull glacier in central Iceland.

Authorities have previously warned that any eruption in the volcano could result in flooding north of the glacier.

On Wednesday, authorities evacuated several hundred people from the area over fears of an eruption.

The region, located more than 190 miles from Iceland’s Reykjavik, has no permanent residents but sits within a national park popular with tourists.

The move came after geologists reported that about 300 earthquakes had been detected in the area since midnight on Tuesday.

The Eyjafjallajokull eruption in April 2010 caused the largest closure of European airspace since World War Two, with losses estimated at between 1.5 billion and 2.5 billion euros.

Criticism following the strictly enforced shutdown resulted in the CAA relaxing its rules to allow planes to fly in areas with a low density of volcanic ash.

Russian aid convoy leaves Ukraine as Angela Merkel arrives in Kiev

All Russian trucks from an unauthorized aid convoy have now crossed back over the border from Ukraine.

The convoy returned from the eastern city of Luhansk, which is held by pro-Russian separatists. Kiev and Western officials fear the trucks may have had military equipment to help the rebels.

Russia said they had delivered generators, food and drink.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is to receive a 500 million-euro loan from Germany after Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Kiev.

The money will be used to help rebuild Ukraine’s damaged infrastructure, Angela Merkel said in a joint press conference with President Petro Poroschenko in the Ukrainian capital on August 23.

A further 25 million euros will go toward helping refugees, the German chancellor said.

Four months of fighting in eastern Ukraine have left more than 2,000 people dead. More than 330,000 people have fled their homes.

The violence erupted when pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions declared independence from Kiev, after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in March.

Ukraine accuses Russia of arming the rebels and sending Russian soldiers into eastern Ukraine – a claim denied by the Kremlin.

Prior to her arrival in Kiev, Angela Merkel described the Russian convoy’s movement into Ukrainian territory as a “dangerous escalation”.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said there was no information about what most of the convoy – of more than 200 vehicles – was carrying.

The head of the OSCE mission, Paul Picard, said that only the first 37 trucks had been inspected by the Red Cross before they set off into Russia.

The trucks had already been waiting at the border for a week, while Russia, the Ukrainian government and the Red Cross tried to come to an agreement on their passage.

The Russians said the convoy started moving because it could not wait any longer, owing to the worsening humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine, which is held by pro-Russian separatists.

The White House and the Ukrainian government both described the deployment of the convoy as a flagrant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

In a phone call, President Barack Obama and Angela Merkel said the conflict had “continued to deteriorate” since a Malaysian airliner was downed last month over rebel-held territory, with the loss of all 298 people on board.

Ukraine called the Russian convoy a “direct invasion” of Ukraine.

NATO and the European Union have also criticized what they said was a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

NATO officials have accused Russia of building up troops on its border, saying significant numbers of Russian forces are operating within Ukraine, using artillery.

Galileo Mission: Doresa and Milena satellites go into wrong orbit

Two of ESA’s Galileo satellites – Europe’s version of the American GPS satellite navigation system – have not gone into the correct orbit.

However, the European Space Agency says the fifth and sixth satellites – Doresa and Milena – launched from French Guiana on August 22 are under control.

The agency is examining the implications of the anomaly.

Doresa and Milena went up on a Soyuz rocket after a 24-hour delay because of bad weather.

“Observations taken after the separation of the satellites from the Soyuz VS09 (rocket) for the Galileo Mission show a gap between the orbit achieved and that which was planned,” said launch service provider Arianespace, in a statement.

“They have been placed on a lower orbit than expected. Teams are studying the impact this could have on the satellites,” it added.

Arianespace declined to comment on whether their trajectories could be corrected, the AFP news agency reports.

After years of delay, Galileo is now finally moving towards full deployment.

ESA, which is building the system on behalf of the EU, expects to have a 26-satellite constellation in orbit by 2017.

The EU is investing billions in its satellite navigation project.

It believes Galileo will bring significant returns to European economies in the form of new businesses that can exploit precise timing and location data delivered from orbit.

What is Europe’s Galileo system?

  • A project of the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA)
  • 30 satellites are likely to be launched in batches in the coming years
  • Galileo will work alongside GPS and the Russian Glonass systems
  • Full system promises real-time positioning down to a meter or less
  • It should deepen and extend high-value markets already initiated by GPS
  • Cost to date: 6 billion euros; budget set aside to 2020: 7 billion euros
  • European GDP reliant now on GPS applications: 800 billion euros per annum

MH370 search: Fugro Equator and Zhu Kezhen vessels assembling bathymetric map

0

The hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet MH370 has entered the next phase.

Two vessels – the Fugro Equator and the Zhu Kezhen – are currently mapping an area covering 60,000 sq km.

Detailed information being gathered about the shape of the ocean floor west of Australia confirms the seabed in some locations to be extremely rugged.

This survey will guide a metre-by-metre search using towed instruments and submersibles.

This is likely to get under way towards the end of September.

The Australian authorities have warned that this could take a year to complete.

The Dutch-owned Fugro Equator and the Chinese naval vessel Zhu Kezhen are presently assembling a bathymetric (depth) map.

It covers the general location in the southern Indian Ocean where investigators believe MH370 is most likely to have come down.

The map is akin to a broad canvas – a first-ever proper look at a terrain about which there is the slimmest of knowledge.

It is essential work. Without this map, which has a resolution of roughly 25m in the deepest depths, it would not be safe to put down submersibles, as there is a high risk these vehicles would be lost.

The Fugro Equator is equipped with a state-of-the-art multibeam echosounder.

The vast majority of the area it is covering has never been sampled before.

It has recorded depths near to 6,000m. Even the shallow regions are more than 1,000m down.

But it is the craggy nature of the seabed that will prompt extreme caution to be exercised in the next phase of operations.

Fugro has been contracted by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to conduct this part of the search as well.

It will involve the Equator and another ship, the Fugro Discovery. Both ships will pull a deep-tow instrument very close to the sea floor using a 10,000m armored fiber-optic cable.

Echosounders are its ears; cameras represent its eyes; and a chemical sensor works like a nose.

This nose will “sniff” for the presence of any jet fuel in the water, down to a few parts per billion in concentration.

Assembling the bathymetric map has been a tough job in itself.

The Equator has had to contend with some terrible winter weather.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 was lost on March 8, 2014, as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, carrying 239 people.

Its disappearance has become one the biggest mysteries in aviation history.

The best information investigators have for its whereabouts come for a series of brief satellite communications with the jet during its flight.

The last of these connections suggests MH370 crashed into the water inside the “high priority” search zone now being surveyed by the Dutch and Chinese vessels.

Chinese Su-27 fighter intercepts US Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft on routine mission

The US is accusing China of reckless mid-air intercept after a Chinese fighter came perilously close to a US military patrol plane over international waters east of China’s Hainan Island, the Pentagon has said.

Pentagon’s spokesman John Kirby said that the US had protested to the Chinese military over the mid-air intercept, calling the fighter pilot’s actions “unsafe and unprofessional”.

John Kirby said that the Chinese aircraft came within 3ft of the US Navy plane.

Correspondents say that it is the fourth such incident since March.

So far there has been no comment about the reported near-miss from China.

Rear Admiral John Kirby said that the incident happened on August 19, when an armed Chinese Su-27 fighter intercepted a US Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft that was on a routine mission.

“We have registered our strong concerns to the Chinese about the unsafe and unprofessional intercept, which posed a risk to the safety and the well-being of the air crew, and was inconsistent with customary international law,” he said.

John Kirby said that the Chinese maneuver detracted from efforts to improve American relations with China’s military.

The warplane flew close to the surveillance aircraft three times, he said, flying above, underneath and alongside it. At one point it performed “a barrel roll” in an apparent display of its weapons.

John Kirby said that the Chinese maneuver was “very, very close, very dangerous”.

Near-misses between aircraft and naval vessels of the US and China are commonplace off the coast of China.

In December China said one of its warships “encountered” a US guided missile cruiser, confirming US reports of a near-collision in the South China Sea.

Shortly before this incident China set up an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea, and said that aircraft flying through the zone must follow its rules, including filing flight plans.

The US, Japan and South Korea have rejected China’s zone, and flown undeclared military aircraft through it. The US has called the move a unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the region.

The most serious incident in recent years however took place in 2001, when a Chinese fighter jet collided with a US Navy EP-3 spy plane, killing the Chinese pilot.
