Kmart discount chain, the latest victim of hacker attacks on retailers, said it detected a security breach last week and is investigating the incident with law enforcement officials.
Cash registers at 1,200 Kmart stores were infected with malware that scooped up payment card numbers for over a month, reports the retailer.
In a statement, Kmart said the security breach was discovered on October 9 and that the malware had been operating since early September.
An initial investigation suggests the cyber-thieves stole credit and debit card numbers.
So far, it is not clear how many cards and customers have been affected.
In its statement, Kmart said no personal information, pin codes, email addresses or social security numbers were taken with the card numbers.

The malware has now been removed and the breach contained, Kmart said, but it was continuing its investigation to gauge its full impact.
It added that there was no evidence that any of the card numbers stolen were being used to create counterfeit cards and land victims with bills for items they did not buy.
Despite this, Kmart said it would be offering free credit monitoring protection for customers to ensure any fraudulent use of their cards did not affect their credit score.
The US Secret Service, which leads investigations into financial fraud, is known to be investigating the case.
“I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our members and customers,” said Alasdair James, president of Kmart, in the statement.
News about the Kmart breach comes soon after the Dairy Queen restaurant chain revealed that some of its outlets across 46 states were hit by hackers. Malware was used to steal names, card numbers and expiration dates of payment cards at 395 restaurants.
Many large US stores have been hit by attackers that target till systems in recent months. The largest attack was against Target in which thieves stole details of 40 million payment cards.
Shawn Henry, a former FBI officer, who is now head of security firm CrowdStrike Services, said retailers needed to do a better job of detecting breaches quickly before large numbers of payment data was stolen.
The computer networks of retailers were so large that attackers were more than likely to find a way in, he told Reuters.

“In a series of articles and books, Jean Tirole has presented a general framework for designing such policies and applied it to a number of industries, ranging from telecommunications to banking. Drawing on these new insights, governments can better encourage powerful firms to become more productive and, at the same time, prevent them from harming competitors and customers.”

Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has said a mistake was “clearly” made by staff treating Thomas Eric Duncan who died of Ebola in Texas, resulting in one being infected.
The female health worker infected is in an isolation ward in stable condition, awaiting confirmation of her diagnosis.
Tom Frieden said a full inquiry would be made into how the transmission occurred.
He said 48 other people who may also have had contact were being observed.

The cyclone, classed “very severe” and bringing winds of up to 120mph, is expected to make landfall soon near the city of Visakhapatnam.

Two people have so far been reported killed in Andhra Pradesh.
It is feared a storm surge of up to two meters could inundate low-lying areas and hundreds of relief centers have been opened in the two states. Disaster relief teams have also been sent.
The authorities say the next five to six hours will be crucial.
The strength of the cyclone has been revised upwards since October 10, and the Indian Navy is on standby to assist.
The two deaths occurred in separate incidents in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, the state’s disaster management department said.

It also warned that a storm surge of up to two metres would “inundate low-lying areas of Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam”.
Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra, a special relief commissioner, said that authorities were ready.
“The administration is fully geared,” he said.
“The collectors [senior government officials] have been given total clearance to take up any evacuation wherever necessary for vulnerable areas which are likely to be inundated.”

Passengers from those countries will have their temperatures taken and have to answer a series of questions.
Checks at O’Hare in Chicago, Newark, Washington’s Dulles and Atlanta’s airport will begin in the coming days.

Mexican authorities say that some bodies found in shallow graves near the town of Iguala are not those of students missing after clashes with police.
The 43 students were last seen being pushed into police vans after a protest in Guerrero state on September 26.
“I can say that some of the bodies, according to the work of forensics experts, do not correspond to the youths,” said Governor Angel Aguirre.
Prosecutors believe police turned over the students to a drug gang.
The gang was linked to the family of Iguala’s Mayor Jose Luis Abarca Velazquez.
He, his wife and his head of security went on leave after the clashes and have not reappeared.
A formal search has been launched for them.

However, it is not clear whether they were targeted for their political beliefs.
Some think that they may have angered a local drug gang called Guerreros Unidos by refusing to pay extortion money.

Typhoon Vongfong brought heavy rain and fierce winds to the southern island of Okinawa, Japan, causing flight cancelations and power cuts to over 20,000 homes.
Officials have said the powerful typhoon will be the strongest storm to hit Japan this year.
Typhoon Vongfong is now heading north and is expected to make landfall on Kyushu island on Monday.
Earlier this week, typhoon Phanfone killed nine people in Japan.
Officials have warned Vongfong could bring high waves, storm surges, flooding and landslides.
Storm tracking website Tropical Storm Risk shows Vongfong losing power over the next few days, as it moves northeast along the rest of Japan.
It is said to be carrying winds up to 145mph, but is moving north slowly, at 10mph.

At least 14 people in Okinawa and Kyushu have already been injured by the strong winds, local reports say.
On October 10, an official from Japan’s Meteorological Agency told Reuters news agency: “There is no question that [Vongfong] is an extremely large, extremely powerful typhoon.
“It’s the strongest storm we’ve had this year, definitely, although it has lost some strength from its peak.”
It has picked up strength since it went through several South Pacific islands including Guam.
The Associated Press news agency said it caused little damage on those islands. It had caused brief power outages and there were no reports of deaths or injuries.
Last week parts of Japan were hit by Typhoon Phanfone, though that storm had rapidly lost power by the time it hit Tokyo on Monday.
Japan’s Kyodo news agency said nine people are now known to have been killed by Phanfone, including three US military servicemen in Okinawa who were washed out to sea. Their bodies have since been recovered.
President Vladimir Putin has ordered thousands of Russian troops stationed near the Ukrainian border to return to their bases, Russian media report.
Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said about 17,600 soldiers on training exercises in the Rostov region would be pulled back.
Russia has previously announced troop withdrawals that NATO and the US say were not actually carried out.
It has been accused of supplying troops and weapons to separatist rebels in east Ukraine – claims it denies.
The latest order comes ahead of a planned meeting between Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday, October 17.
Ukrainian troops have been fighting pro-Russia rebels in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk since April, in a conflict that has killed more than 3,500 people.
The two sides agreed a truce on September 5, but fighting has continued, especially in and around Donetsk.

“[Vladimir] Putin has ordered to start the returning of troops to regular station,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in quotes carried by Interfax and Ria Novosti news agencies.
Dmitry Peskov said this was because the period of training was completed.
Vladimir Putin made similar statements about withdrawing troops from the Ukrainian border in March and May.
However, NATO and US officials said they saw no evidence of soldiers being moved.
Correspondents say the deployment of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border is seen as a powerful tool designed to threaten the government in Kiev.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko are expected to meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Italy on October 17.
President Petro Poroshenko told reporters: “I don’t expect the talks will be easy.”
“Russia’s role in the issue of providing peace… is difficult to overestimate,” he added.
Petro Poroshenko said he also hoped to discuss Russia and Ukraine’s gas pricing dispute.
Russia cut off gas supplies to Ukraine in June, saying the Kiev government had not settled its debts.
Ukraine could face gas shortages in the winter if the dispute is not resolved.
According to new reports, at least 553 people are said to have died in a month in the Kurdish town of Kobane, Syria, under Islamic State (ISIS) attack.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based Syrian opposition body which monitors the conflict, counted 298 IS fighters among the dead.
US aircraft have bombed ISIS positions as Kurdish fighters cling on to the town’s vital border crossing with Turkey.
However, the defenders say they are outgunned on the ground.
“The supply of fighters is very good…” Kobane official Idris Nassan told Reuters news agency.
“But fighters coming without arms, without weaponry, is not going to make a critical difference.”
Correspondents watched from just over the border in Turkey on Saturday, October 11, as fighting raged for the town.
Turkey, wary of its recent long conflict with its own large Kurdish population, has ruled out any unilateral ground intervention.
Some 200,000 Syrian Kurdish refugees have crossed the border since the ISIS advance began nearly a month ago.

Meanwhile, fighting has continued in Iraq, where ISIS overran large parts of the north during the summer.
According to the Observatory, the true figure for deaths in the siege of Kobane could be more than 1,100 since the ISIS attack began on September 16.
Of the deaths it has been able to document, 226 are of Kurdish fighters and nine are of other Syrian opposition fighters, who were fighting on their side.
Of the 20 civilian deaths recorded, 17 were victims of ISIS executions, it said.
Kobane resounded to small-arms fire and explosions on Saturday following the failure of a pre-dawn ISIS offensive to take more ground.
According to the Pentagon, US air strikes on ISIS targets at Kobane since October 10 have hit an ISIS fighting position; damaged a command and control facility; destroyed a staging building; struck two small units of fighters; and destroyed three lorries.
Idris Nassan said the air strikes had helped the Kurdish fighters regain some territory in the south of the city but they were not enough.
“A few days ago, [ISIS] attacked with a Humvee vehicle, they use mortars, cannons, tanks,” he said.
“We don’t need just Kalashnikovs and bullets. We need something effective since they captured many tanks and military vehicles in Iraq.”
In Europe, at least 20,000 Kurds living in Germany marched in the city of Duesseldorf on Saturday to highlight the threat to Kurds in Kobane.
At a smaller rally in the Austrian town of Bregenz, two people were stabbed and seriously wounded when Kurdish protesters clashed with a rival demonstration, said to involve Turks and Chechens.

Boko Haram has released 27 hostages including 10 Chinese workers held for months in Cameroon.
The hostages were flown to capital Yaounde from the country’s far northern region after being freed early on Saturday, October 11.
They include the wife of Cameroon’s Vice-Prime Minister, Amadou Ali.
They were seized in two separate raids in May and July close to the Nigeria border. It is not clear how their release was secured.
Boko Haram is seeking to establish an Islamist state in Nigeria but its fighters often cross the long and porous border with Cameroon.
Many Nigerian civilians in border towns have fled to Cameroon to escape militant attacks, which have been stepped up in recent months.
In July, Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad and Niger agreed to form a 2,800-strong regional force to tackle Boko Haram militants.
Cameroon has reinforced its troops in its northern regions.

The freed hostages were taken to Yaounde general hospital upon their arrival in the capital, Reuters reports.
“You can imagine that after the ordeal they are very happy to be released and very relieved,” Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Cameroon’s Minister of Communications, told the news agency.
“But they are very weak. They are in very poor physical condition.”
President Paul Biya announced their release said in a statement on state radio: “The 27 hostages kidnapped on May 16, 2014, at Waza and on July 27, 2014, at Kolofata were given this night to Cameroonian authorities.
“Ten Chinese, the wife of the Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, the Lamido [a local religious leader] of Kolofata, and the members of their families kidnapped with them are safe.”
No details were given on the circumstances of the release or whether a ransom was paid.
In July, Cameroon said Amadou Ali’s wife, Akaoua Babiana, and her maid were abducted in “a savage attack” on his home in Kolofata by Boko Haram militants.
Amadou Ali managed to escape to a neighboring town.
Efforts to step up regional co-operation gained momentum after Boko Haram caused an international outcry by abducting more than 200 girls from a boarding school in north-eastern Nigeria.
The girls are thought to be held in the vast Sambisa forest, along Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.
Alaska police have released a report describing a drunken brawl involving the son, daughter and husband of former governor Sarah Palin.
According to police report, Sarah Palin’s children Track and Bristol and husband Todd were involved in physical altercations at a birthday party on September 6.
Prosecutors have declined to press charges in the incident.
Sarah Palin ran for US vice-president in 2008 and remains popular among the Republican Party’s conservative base.
She stepped down from the governorship of Alaska in 2009. She has since had a career in television and remains popular on the conservative speaking circuit.
On the evening of September 6, police were called to the Anchorage home of a man named Korey Klingenmeyer after a report of a brawl involving as many as 20 people.
According to witness statements, which are vague about the initial cause of the fighting, the Palin family and their entourage arrived at the house about 23:00 in a limousine.
Todd and Track Palin, 26, ended up in one fight with a group of men on the street outside the house, while Bristol Palin, 23, got into an altercation with the party host.

Track Palin, described as bloodied, “belligerent” and “heavily intoxicated”, told police the family had come to the house to join the party, and that the fight began when a group of men began speaking rudely to his sisters and one of them “sucker punched” a friend.
Track Palin offered to fight and was subsequently attacked by two men, he told police. Todd Palin told police that “everything escalated and it was a situation they couldn’t walk away from”.
Sarah Palin, meanwhile, was at the scene but not reportedly involved in the violence.
Korey Klingenmeyer, who “appeared to be moderately intoxicated”, told police he was angry that the Palins had come to the party and “were causing the problems”.
Upon learning men were fighting outside his house, he told his guests not to get involved, he told police.
But then, he told police, Bristol Palin entered the property spoiling for a fight. Korey Klingenmeyer said he told her he would not have any fighting at his home, at which point Bristol Palin confronted him with profanity.
Then, Korey Klingenmeyer said he invited Bristol Palin to punch him in the face “if it makes her feel better”.
She did so, five or six times and “she was hitting pretty hard”.
Korey Klingenmeyer and other witnesses said Klingenmeyer never returned the blows.
Bristol Palin, meanwhile, told police she had intended to confront someone who she said had pushed her sister Willow, when Korey Klingenmeyer pushed her to the ground.
A witness, Matthew McKenna, told police that when the fight started at an intersection near the house, he told Todd Palin to gather his family and entourage and leave.
“He said the problem was that Bristol and Willow were drunk, as were their boyfriends,” the police wrote.
