Is Idris Elba the next James Bond?

Idris Elba has responded to rumors of becoming the next James Bond after Sony attack.

The actor has said he’s done nothing to deny the rumors.

“Isn’t 007 supposed to [be] handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people,” Idris Elba tweeted, along with a picture of himself.

Current star, Daniel Craig, is committed to just one more movie.

Reports about the leaked Sony Pictures Entertainment emails suggest that a message from chairman Amy Pascal read: “Idris should be the next Bond.”Idris Elba next James Bond

Amy Pascal was thought to be emailing Elizabeth Cantillon, the former executive vice president of production for Columbia Pictures – which distributes the Bond franchise.

There has been no confirmation from Sony Pictures that the actor will be the next 007.

Earlier this week, Rush Limbaugh criticized the rumors, saying that because the original author Ian Fleming wrote James Bond as “a white [man] from Scotland”, the character should not be played by a black actor.

“That’s not who James Bond is, and I know it’s racist to probably even point this out,” he said.

Idris Elba, 42, has previously said he would like to play James Bond.

Daniel Craig is currently filming upcoming James Bond movie, Spectre.

AirAsia missing plane: Flight QZ8501 from Indonesia to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control

AirAsia flight QZ8501 with 162 people on board travelling from Indonesia to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control.

Flight QZ8501 lost contact at 07:24AM, Malaysia-based AirAsia tweeted.

Search and rescue operations are under way.

Malaysia’s national carrier Malaysia Airlines has suffered two disasters this year – flights MH370 and MH17 – but AirAsia has never lost a plane.

Flight MH370 disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March with 239 passengers and crew, and MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in July, killing all 298 on board.

The AirAsia flight had been due to arrive in Singapore at 08:30AM.Missing AirAsia plane December 2014

The missing jet had requested a “deviation” from the flight path due to bad weather, the company said.

There were 155 passengers on board, with 138 adults, 16 children and one infant, the company said in a statement. Also on board were two pilots and five cabin crew.

Most of those on board were Indonesian, but there were six others on board, three South Koreans, and one each from France, Malaysia and Singapore, AirAsia has said.

An official with the transport ministry, Hadi Mustofa, told local media the plane lost contact over the Java Sea, between the islands of Kalimantan and Java.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact and that the weather had been cloudy.

AirAsia has set up an emergency line for family or friends of those who may be on board: +622 129 850 801.

Malaysia flood 2014: PM Najib Razak announces extra funding

Malaysian PM Najib Razak has announced an extra 500 million ringgit ($142 million) to help victims of the country’s worst flooding in decades.

At least five people have been killed in the floods along Malaysia’s east coast, with over 160,000 displaced.

PM Najib Razak made the announcement after visiting flood-stricken areas.

He has faced public anger after being photographed golfing with President Barack Obama in Hawaii during the storms.

Najib Razak decided to cut short his holiday, and defended his “golf diplomacy” with President Barack Obama, saying that it was difficult to decline the invitation as it had been planned for a while.Malaysia floods 2014

“Every day when I was there, I received the latest report on the flood situation… as it became more serious, I decided to return to the country as soon as possible,” Najib Razak said in Kota Bharu, the capital of Kelantan province.

The extra funding will go to victims after the floods subsides, and is on top of an initial 50 million ringgit ($14 million) allocation.

Entire towns have been submerged by the flooding.

Rescue workers have been struggling to bring in enough food and supplies for families sleeping in relief centers.

Some victims have accused the government of being too slow in responding.

Malaysia’s eastern states are often flooded during the monsoon season but heavy rain and winds have worsened the situation this year.

Croatia presidential elections 2014

Croatia is voting to elect a new president, with the poll seen as a test for the main political parties.

The incumbent, Ivo Josipovic, is one of four candidates. He was nominated by the governing coalition.

The other three are Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, from the main opposition party, right-winger Milan Kujundzic and activist Ivan Vilibor Sincic.

Croatia’s president has a largely ceremonial role, but has a say in foreign policy and is head of the army.

The country is the newest member of the European Union, joining in July 2013.Croatia presidential elections 2014 candidates

Croatia’s economy has struggled, and is now entering its sixth year of recession. Parliamentary elections are expected to be held towards the end of 2015.

If none of the four candidates wins more than 50% of the vote, there will be a runoff in two weeks time.

The Public Administration Ministry said on December 26 that 3,779,281 voters are eligible to vote at the presidential election.

Voters will be able to cast their ballots in Croatia or at polling stations in 50 other countries.

French Alps snowfall leaves 15,000 drivers stranded in Savoy

More than 15,000 vehicles are stranded in the French Alps due to snow and ice, snarling the holiday traffic to and from ski resorts, French media report.

France declared an orange weather alert, its second-highest, as local authorities scrambled to put up motorists for the night.

One man died when his vehicle slid into a ravine in the Isere region.

The French government asked drivers to “exercise the utmost caution” and avoid travel if possible.

Three people died in other snow-related incidents across France earlier this week, according to Le Monde.French Alps snowfall December 2014

Snowy conditions in the French Alps are expected to persist on December 28, followed by freezing weather next week when Paris should see its first frosts in more than a year, French weather forecasters say.

Local gyms and community halls were opened up as shelters in the Savoy region on December 27.

Motorists seeking accommodation “stormed” the Chambery exhibition centre, according to a live page on the website of Le Dauphine Libere newspaper.

Strong winds caused damage elsewhere in France, shutting the port of Calais, where an anti-migrant fence was partially toppled.

Closer to Paris, the celebrated gardens of Versailles were closed to the public because of gales.

Heavy snow caused disruption to roads in Germany too, causing a 16-mile traffic jam on the A8 motorway near Stuttgart.

The 56-year-old Turkish man told police he felt he needed to make the gesture, Italian media report.

The gunman’s gesture comes 31 years to the day that Pope John Paul II visited Mehmet Ali Agca in prison and forgave him for the attempt on his life.

Mehmet Ali Agca served 19 years in an Italian jail for shooting the Pope twice at close range. His motive remains a mystery.Mehmet Ali Agca Pope John Paul tomb

President George H.W. Bush remained at Houston Methodist Hospital for a fifth day in a row after experiencing shortness of breath on Tuesday, December 23.

The former president, age 90, “remains in high spirits and continues to make progress, but he will remain at the Houston Methodist Hospital this evening,” said his spokesman, Jim McGrath.

Houston Methodist is the same hospital were George H.W. Bush spent nearly two months for a bronchitis-related cough and other health issues before he was released in January 2013 after treatment.George HW Bush hospitalized

His most recent public appearance was in November at an event at Texas A&M University that he attended with his son, former President George W. Bush.

George H.W. Bush began experiencing health problems in 1991 when, as president, he entered the hospital with an irregular heartbeat.

Doctors diagnosed him as having Graves Disease, a thyroid condition that, by coincidence, his wife also had.

George H.W. Bush’s family has said publicly the former president was no longer able to walk unassisted, a frustration for a man who enjoyed an active lifestyle of golf, fishing, jogging, and power walks on the beach near his summer home in Maine.

The Interview: Yoon Mi-rae to sue Sony Pictures over using song without permission

Yoon Mi-rae has threatened to sue Sony Pictures Entertainment for using one of her songs in the controversial movie The Interview without permission, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The Interview is a comedy about the assassination attempt of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The South Korean singer’s song, Pay Day, is said to have been used in a scene in which the actor playing the North Korean leader drinks and plays billiards with women who are wearing underwear.Yoon Mi rae sues Sony Pictures over The Interview

The Interview had its launch cancelled after a major cyber attack at the hands of a group calling itself the Guardians of Peace.

The hackers threatened to carry out a terrorist attack on cinemas that showed the film on its scheduled release date of Christmas Day.

The US accused the North Koreans of being behind the hack, something the country denies.

Forbes’ Most Overpaid Actor List 2014: Adam Sandler on top for second year in a row

Adam Sandler has topped Forbes‘ Most Overpaid Actor List for a second year in a row.

Adam Sandler came ahead of Johnny Depp and Ben Stiller, who complete the top three, to pick up the honor.

The rankings were decided by Forbes magazine after comparing actors’ estimated pay with the budget and revenue of the last three films they starred in before June 2014.

Animated films and cameos were not included in the list.

Although Adam Sandler’s latest film Grown Ups 2 took $246 million at the global box office, it didn’t make up for the more disappointing takings of 48-year-old’s previous releases, Jack and Jill and That’s My Boy.

It’s estimated that for every $1 Adam Sandler was paid, he returned an average of $3.20.Adam Sandler tops Forbes list of most overpaid actor

By comparison, Emma Stone – who topped Forbes‘ 2013 best actors for the buck list – returned an estimated $80.70 for every $1 she was paid for her last three movies.

Johnny Depp, 51, is second on the 2014 overpaid list, returning an average of $4.10 for each dollar he was paid.

His average was lowered by recent films The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows.

Ben Stiller is number three on the list.

His estimated return of $4.80 owes itself to Tower Heist and The Watch not performing too well at the box office.

The top five is completed by Ryan Reynolds, with a return of $4.90 for each dollar paid, and Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who pulled in a $5.20 return.

According to Forbes, Cloud Atlas – which sees Tom Hanks taking on six roles – was an expensive flop for the actor.

Will Ferrell ($6.60), Channing Tatum ($6.70), Denzel Washington ($6.90) and Ben Affleck ($9.37) also appear in the top 10.

Sandra Bullock is the only actress to appear on the list, coming in ninth with a return of $9. Like Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock is not considered overpaid by Hollywood standards, she lands here because of math. Huge backend payments on The Blind Side and Gravity make Sandra Bullock look overpaid.

The Interview: North Korea slams Barack Obama for movie release

North Korea has berated President Barack Obama over the release of The Interview movie in the US.

The Interview is about a fictional plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

North Korea’s National Defense Commission (NDC) also accused the US of shutting down the country’s internet – and used a racial slur to describe the “reckless” Barack Obama.

Sony Pictures had originally pulled The Interview after a cyber-attack and threats.

The company later reconsidered, releasing the comedy on Christmas Day.

A number of critics – including President Barack Obama – had warned that freedom of expression was under threat if the movie was shelved.

The controversial film was shown in some US cinemas and online, with several hundred independent theaters coming forward and offering to show the film. However, larger cinemas decided not screen it.North Korea berates Barack Obama for The Interview release

Kim Jong-un’s potential difficulty is that The Interview – which casts the North Korean leader as a malign, vain buffoon – has been widely reviewed as funny and astute.

In a statement on Saturday, an NDC spokesman denounced the US for screening the “dishonest and reactionary movie hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK [North Korea] and agitating terrorism”.

President Barack Obama, the statement said, “is the chief culprit who forced the Sony Pictures Entertainment to indiscriminately distribute the movie”, blackmailing cinemas in the US.

It added: “Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest.”

The NDC also accused also Washington of “groundlessly linking the unheard of hacking at the Sony Pictures Entertainment to the DPRK”.

Sony Pictures had initially pulled the film after suffering an unprecedented hacking attack at the hands of a group calling itself the Guardians of Peace.

The hackers also threatened to carry out a terrorist attack on cinemas showed the film on its scheduled release date of Christmas Day.

Last week, the FBI said its analysis pointed the finger at North Korea. However, many cyber-security experts have come forward to dispute this assertion.

At the time, North Korea denied being behind the attack but described it as a “righteous deed”.

North Korea subsequently suffered a severe internet outage.

Father Gregorio Lopez: Kidnapped Mexican priest found dead in Ciudad Altamirano

Father Gregorio Lopez, who was kidnapped in Mexico’s south-western state of Guerrero on December 22, has been found shot dead, officials say.

The priest’s body was discovered near the city of Ciudad Altamirano.

A group of priests later rallied in the city to condemn the murder.

Father Gregorio Lopez was seized by gunmen from Ciudad Altamirano’s seminary, where he taught. The reason for the killing remains unclear.Father Gregorio Lopez Mexico

A friend of the priest told local media that Gregorio Lopez was kidnapped after he accused drug gang Guerreros Unidos of the abduction and alleged murder of 43 students in September.

He is the third priest to be killed this year in Guerrero state, which has been at the centre of drug-related violence in Mexico.

Last month, forensic experts identified the body of a Ugandan Catholic priest among the remains found in a mass grave. Father John Ssenyondo had been missing since being kidnapped in April.

The grave was located by federal police looking for the missing students.

On December 26, demonstrators in several Mexican cities commemorated the disappearance of the students on September 26 – exactly three months ago.

Police in the town of Iguala allegedly detained them following a clash that left six people dead.

Authorities say the police turned the students over to members of a drug gang who killed them and burned their bodies.

So far, the authorities have only identified the remains of one of the students.

Exodus: Gods and Kings banned in Egypt

Exodus: Gods and Kings has been banned in Egypt because of what censors described as “historical inaccuracies”.

The head of the censorship board said these included the film’s depiction of Jews as having built the Pyramids, and that an earthquake, not a miracle by Moses, caused the Red Sea to part.

Exodus: Gods and Kings stars Christian Bale as Moses.

There have also been reports that the film is banned in Morocco.Exodus banned in Egypt

Although the state-run Moroccan Cinema Centre (CCM) had given the film the green light, Moroccan business website Medias24.com said that officials had decided to ban the movie from being screened the day before its premiere.

According to the book of Exodus, Jewish slaves were led to freedom by Moses after God inflicted a series of plagues on Egypt.

The Pyramids are believed to have been built about 1,000 years before the story of the Exodus.

The Biblical story tells how the Red Sea was parted by a miracle performed by God through Moses, allowing the Jewish people to escape from the pursuing Egyptian army.

Exodus: Gods and Kings, which cost a reported $140 million to make, took $24.5 million on its debut weekend.

The Biblical epic overtook the third installment of The Hunger Games, following three weeks at number one. However, it has had mixed reviews.

The film’s opening fell well short of other modern Biblical films, including Darren Aronofsky’s Noah which took $43.7 million on its opening weekend in March and 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, which took $83.3 million.

Top Tips for Cooking the Perfect Christmas Dinner

Whilst presents and family are all well and good, we all know that the real star of the festive season is Christmas dinner. Sure, you may have roasts throughout the year, but the one at Christmas is extra special and guaranteed to put you in a food coma for the rest of the day at least.

However, there are some little things you can do to ensure your Christmas dinner is that extra bit better…

  • If you have a frozen turkey, make sure you’ve given it plenty of time to defrost. A 4-5kg frozen turkey will take around 20 hours to defrost at room temperature, whilst a 9-11kg turkey could take as much as 48 hours to defrost.
  • Prepare as much as you can the night before. Leave potatoes to soak in cold water, peel the veg and get out any tools and utensils you know you’re going to need. This will take away a lot of the stress the following day.
  • Do away with starters. You’re going to have plenty of other food, and you don’t want to be too full for dessert.
  • Turkey legs actually take longer to cook than the breast, and this can often lead to either over or underdone parts of the turkey. Try putting a layer of stuffing between the turkey’s skin and breast to make cooking times more even.
  • Make sure your oven is up to scratch. An old oven may have hotspots which can lead to uneven cooking. It’s worth buying quality if you want top quality food, such as these range cookers from HiSpek and you’ll know it will cook the turkey evenly throughout.
  • Remember to leave the turkey to stand after cooking. This will allow the juices to expand through the turkey for maximum flavour. Cover the turkey loosely in foil when it’s standing, although not too tightly or the moisture will be sealed in and the skin will lose its crispness.
  • After parboiling and before roasting, mash the potatoes ever so slightly to increase the surface area for crispy bits. Buy in some goose fat if you want them extra crispy.
  • If you want the best gravy then don’t forget the juices from the turkey in the baking tray. Add that to the stock for the absolute best flavour.
  • Big sprouts can be tricky to cook so opt for small ones, about one inch across is optimal. When cutting with this type of precision it’s important to have the right knife, which you are sure to find among the selection of Fiskars chef knives. If you want to do something a little different with your sprouts, pan fry them with some pancetta and garlic.
  • Carrots and parsnips are delicious parboiled and then roasted drizzled with honey.
  • If you or your children aren’t big fans of Christmas pudding, then try chocolate steamed pudding instead. It even looks a bit like Christmas pudding but the taste is much less divisive, particularly for the kids.

Indian Ocean tsunami: Memorial services held In Indonesia and other countries on 10th anniversary

0

Indonesia and other nations are holding memorial services for the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami on the 10th anniversary of the disaster.

In Indonesia’s province of Aceh – the worst hit area – Vice-President Jusuf Kalla led tributes to the dead at the Siron mass grave.

Memorial ceremonies will also take place in Thailand and Sri Lanka.

More than 200,000 people died when an underwater earthquake set off massive waves on December 26, 2004.

In Aceh’s capital, Banda Aceh, Jusuf Kalla thanked local volunteers and the outside world for helping Aceh recover from the tragedy. He also presented awards to ambassadors from the donor nations.

Earlier, thousands of people earlier gathered at the city’s Great Mosque – a 19th Century building that was one of the few structures in the town to survive the tsunami.

The mosque’s imam, Asman Ismail, said the tsunami had taught a “valuable lesson” to Aceh, which had been the scene of an armed conflict for nearly 30 years.

“After the tsunami, no-one fights against each other, people live in harmony and peace till this day,” he said.Indian Ocean tsunami memorial service

Efforts to end the conflict resumed after the tsunami, culminating in a peace deal between the government and the rebels in August 2005.

In Thailand, people are marking the anniversary with a series of solemn events and religious rites throughout the day.

In the small fishing village of Ban Nam Khem, Phang Nga province, people have been laying flowers at a memorial wall displaying names of the victims.

The village was devastated by the massive waves.

Nearly 5,500 people died in Thailand, half of whom were foreign tourists.

In Sri Lanka, the Ocean Queen Express train – which has become a symbol of the tragedy for the nation – is at the centre of commemorative events.

The overcrowded train was hit by the tsunami south of the capital Colombo. More than 1,700 people died, in what was the world’s biggest rail disaster.

Survivors and relatives of those who died boarded the restored train carriage and headed to Peraliya, where the train was struck.

Sweden, which lost over 500 of its citizens in the disaster, will hold a memorial service in the Uppsala Cathedral on December 26.

The strength of the quake off Indonesia’s coast – the biggest tremor in the world since 1964 – unleashed giant waves that rushed across the Indian Ocean.

The tsunami also hit Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Maldives and later reached the east African nations’ of Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania.

Tsunami warning systems and emergency procedures have been implemented since the disaster to try to minimize casualties in the future.

Unhealthy lifestyle behind more than 4 in 10 cancers

0

According to British experts, more than 4 in 10 cancers could be prevented if people led healthier lives.

Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor, followed by unhealthy diets.

The charity is urging people to consider their health when making New Year resolutions.

Limiting alcohol intake and doing regular exercise is also good advice.

According to the figures spanning five years from 2007 to 2011, more than 300,000 cases of cancer recorded were linked to smoking.

A further 145,000 were linked to unhealthy diets containing too much processed food.Unhealthy lifestyle and cancer risk

Obesity contributed to 88,000 cases and alcohol to 62,200.

Sun damage to the skin and physical inactivity were also contributing factors.

Prof Max Parkin, a Cancer Research UK statistician based at Queen Mary University of London, said: “There’s now little doubt that certain lifestyle choices can have a big impact on cancer risk, with research around the world all pointing to the same key risk factors.

“Of course everyone enjoys some extra treats during the Christmas holidays so we don’t want to ban mince pies and wine but it’s a good time to think about taking up some healthy habits for 2015.

“Leading a healthy lifestyle can’t guarantee someone won’t get cancer but we can stack the odds in our favor by taking positive steps now that will help decrease our cancer risk in future.”

Public Health England says a healthy lifestyle can play a vital role in reducing cancer risk.

Sweden: Eskilstuna mosque set on fire on Christmas Day

A mosque has been set on fire in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna on Christmas Day, injuring five people, police said.

About 15 to 20 people were attending midday prayers in the mosque, located in the ground floor of a residential building, when the fire broke out on December 25.

Local media footage showed smoke and flames billowing from the windows before firefighters put the blaze out.

The incident comes amid a fierce debate in Sweden over immigration policies.

The far right wants to cut the number of asylum seekers allowed into Sweden by 90%, while mainstream parties are intent on preserving the country’s liberal policy.Eskilstuna mosque set on fire

“A witness saw somebody throw an object through the window of the building, which serves as a mosque, after which a violent fire began,” police spokesman Lars Franzell told reporters.

He said five people were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to lacerations.

Police are treating the incident as arson but no arrests have been made so far, Lars Franzell added.

Eskilstuna, which has a large immigrant population, was the scene of clashes involving neo-Nazi groups opposed to Sweden’s immigration policy earlier this year.

Earlier this month, the Sweden Democrats – a populist party with a strongly anti-immigration agenda – brought down the minority governing coalition after it had been in power for just two-and-a-half months, by refusing to support its budget plans.

Turkish student arrested for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

A Turkish teenager has been arrested on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to local media.

The 16-year-old high-school student was arrested on December 24 after criticizing Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party during a speech at a student protest in the central Anatolian city of Konya.

The boy could face up to 4 years in prison if found guilty.

PM Ahmet Davutoglu defended the arrest, saying the presidential office “needs to be shown respect”.

Turkey’s penal code makes it a crime to insult the president.

The student’s speech, given to commemorate the killing of a Turkish soldier by Islamists in the 1920s, was recorded on video and broadcast by Dogan News Agency.

In it, he defends secularism and the principles of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic.

The student also singled out Recep Tayyip Erdogan for criticism over recent corruption allegations, as the crowd chanted “everywhere is bribery, everywhere is corruption”.

Hurriyet newspaper said the boy was believed to be a member of a leftist organization, but he denies having links with any political party.

Speaking to prosecutors, the student said: “I’ve made the statement in question. I have no intent to insult.”

The teenager has pleaded not guilty and his lawyers have lodged an appeal against the charges.

The arrest sparked fierce criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with Attila Kart, a member of opposition party CHP, saying the president was creating “an environment of fear, oppression and threat”.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was elected president in August after serving as prime minister for 11 years, has faced several corruption allegations in recent years.

He insists they are baseless and part of a “dark plot” to oust him from power by influential cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is in self-imposed exile in the US.

Earlier this month, police arrested more than 20 journalists working for media outlets thought to be sympathetic to the Gulen movement.

A Turkish court has also issued an arrest warrant for Fethullah Gulen himself, but correspondents say it is considered to be largely symbolic and unlikely to be acted upon.

Pope Francis delivers Urbi et Orbi Christmas message 2014

Pope Francis has delivered his second “Urbi et Orbi” – to the city and the world – Christmas message, highlighting the plight of victims of conflict in Syria and Iraq.

The pontiff has denounced the “brutal persecution” of religious and ethnic minorities, in his traditional Christmas Day address.

“Too many people are being held hostage or massacred” in Nigeria, he added.

Pope Francis also urged dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians and condemned Taliban attacks in Pakistan.

Tens of thousands of people turned out on St Peter’s Square to hear Pope Francis deliver his annual message.

He said Christians in Iraq and Syria had endured conflict for too long, and “together with those belonging to other ethnic and religious groups, are suffering a brutal persecution”.

“May Christmas bring them hope, as indeed also to the many displaced persons, exiles and refugees, children, adults and elderly, from this region and from the whole world,” the Pope said.

In his Christmas Day address, Pope Francis also asked for peace in Ukraine, Nigeria, in Libya, South Sudan and other parts of Africa.

He called for comfort for the families of the 132 children killed in a Taliban attack in Pakistan last week – and for the victims of the Ebola epidemic.

On Christmas Eve Pope Francis made a surprise telephone call to refugees in a camp near Irbil, in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region.

“You are like Jesus on Christmas night. There was no room for him either,” Pope Francis told them.

Advances in Iraq by Islamic State (ISIS) militants have forced tens of thousands of Christians and people from other religious minorities to flee.

The Interview opens in some US theaters and online

The Interview has opened in some US theaters and online, after a cyber-attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment and threats to moviegoers over its release.

Sony Pictures had originally pulled The Interview, a movie about a fictional plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but it reconsidered after critics – including President Barack Obama.

The studio said freedom of expression was under threat.

Some movie theaters organized midnight showings for Americans determined to see The Interview on the big screen.

Several hundred independent theaters across the US have come forward offering to show the title after larger cinemas decided not to screen it following threats.

Lee Peterson, manager of Cinema Village in New York, told Reuters news agency it was a matter of principle to show the film.

“Obviously we would like to make money from the movie, as we would with any movie, but it’s important to take a stand about freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to see movies.”

The film is also being offered through a dedicated website and via Google services YouTube and Play, and Microsoft’s Xbox Video platform, but only in the US.

Sony Pictures initially pulled the film after suffering an unprecedented hacking attack at the hands of a group calling itself the Guardians of Peace.

Last week, the FBI said its analysis pointed the finger at North Korea. However, many cybersecurity experts have come forward to dispute this assertion.

North Korea denied being behind the attack but described it as a “righteous deed”.

The hackers threatened to carry out a terrorist attack on theaters showed the film on its scheduled release date of Christmas Day. After many cinemas pulled out, Sony cancelled the release.

That move was described by President Barack Obama as a mistake.

Sony Chairman Michael Lynton said digital distribution had now been chosen to reverse some of that damage.

“It was essential for our studio to release this movie, especially given the assault upon our business and our employees by those who wanted to stop free speech.

“We chose the path of digital distribution first so as to reach as many people as possible on opening day, and we continue to seek other partners and platforms to further expand the release.”

The Interview features James Franco and Seth Rogen as two journalists granted an audience with Kim Jong-un. The CIA then enlists the pair to assassinate the North Korean leader.
