Vladimir Putin admits Crimea annexation plot before referendum

Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted for the first time that the plan to annex Crimea was ordered weeks before the referendum on self-determination.

Crimea was formally absorbed into Russia on March 18, to international condemnation, after unidentified gunmen took over the peninsula.

Vladimir Putin said on TV he had ordered work on “returning Crimea” to begin at an all-night meeting on February 22.

The meeting was called after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted.

Speaking last year, Vladimir Putin had said only that he took his final decision about Crimea after secret, undated opinion polls showed 80% of Crimeans favored joining Russia.

The findings of these polls were borne out by the outcome of the referendum on March 16, he told Russian state TV last April.

Speaking in a forthcoming Russian TV documentary, Vladimir Putin said a meeting with officials had been held on February 22-23 to plan the rescue of Ukraine’s deposed president.

“I invited the leaders of our special services and the defense ministry to the Kremlin and set them the task of saving the life of the president of Ukraine, who would simply have been liquidated,” he said.Vladimir Putin Crimea annexation plot

“We finished about seven in the morning. When we were parting, I told all my colleagues, <<We are forced to begin the work to bring Crimea back into Russia>>.”

The trailer for The Path To The Motherland was broadcast on March 8 with no release date announced.

On February 27, unidentified armed men seized the local parliament and local government buildings in Crimea, raising the Russian flag.

Among them appeared to be regular soldiers without military insignia, who were dubbed the “little green men”.

Vladimir Putin subsequently admitted deploying troops on the peninsula to “stand behind Crimea’s self-defense forces”.

The formal annexation of Crimea sparked unrest in eastern Ukraine on April 7, when pro-Russian protesters occupied government buildings in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv demanding independence.

A month later, pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk declared independence from Ukraine after unrecognized referendums.

Ukraine responded by launching an “anti-terrorist operation” against them and the region became engulfed in a conflict which has cost at least 6,000 lives and driven more than a million people from their homes, according to the UN.

The Ukrainian government, Western leaders and NATO say there is clear evidence that Russia is helping the separatists with heavy weapons and soldiers. Independent experts echo that accusation.

Moscow denies it, insisting that any Russians serving with the rebels are “volunteers”.

Full details of Viktor Yanukovych’s escape from Ukraine are unclear although Vladimir Putin spoke of preparations to evacuate him from Donetsk.

The documentary, which Russian TV says will be broadcast soon, was made by Andrei Kondrashov, a journalist with state-run channel Rossiya-1.

Boris Nemtsov murder: Ilya Yashin skeptical of arrests

Ilya Yashin, a close ally of murdered Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, says he is “totally skeptical” that the two men charged organized his killing.

“The trigger man will be blamed, while those who actually ordered the killing will go free,” Ilya Yashin, co-founder of Boris Nemtsov’s party, said on March 8.

Ilya Yashin’s comments came after two men of Chechen origin were charged with his murder and three others arrested.

He rejected suggestions radical Islamists were behind the murder.

“The investigators’ nonsensical theory about Islamist motives in the killing suits the Kremlin and takes [President Vladimir] Putin out of the firing line,” Ilya Yashin said on Twitter.

On March 8, a court in Moscow charged Zaur Dadayev and Anzor Gubashev with shooting Boris Nemtsov on a bridge near the Kremlin on January 27. Zaur Dadayev had admitted his involvement, the court said.

Three other suspects were remanded in custody. A sixth man was reported to have killed himself in a standoff with police in the Chechen capital Grozny.Boris Nemtsov murder 2015

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, an ally of President Vladimir Putin, described Zaur Dadayev as a devout Muslim who was shocked by cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published in French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

“All who know Zaur [Dadayev] confirm that he is a deep believer and also that he, like all Muslims, was shocked by the activities of Charlie and comments in support of printing the cartoons,” he said.

Along with other Russian politicians and activists, Boris Nemtsov had condemned the killing of 12 journalists at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo by Islamist extremists.

Boris Nemtsov also criticized threats made by the Chechen leader towards those who did not condemn cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo.

Ramazan Kadyrov had declared former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky his “personal enemy” for urging other papers to republish the Charlie Hebdo cartoons. He had also said Ekho Mosvky editor-in-chief Alexei Venediktov “would be called to account” after his station’s website ran a poll on whether media should publish similar cartoons.

This prompted Boris Nemtsov to accuse Ramazan Kadyrov of violating Russia’s Criminal Code by infringing journalists’ activities.

“Everybody is already sick and tired of Ramzan’s threats, but he is certain that [President Vladimir] Putin will not let anyone touch him, so he is growing increasingly brazen every day,” Boris Nemtsov wrote on his Facebook page in January.

However, Ilya Yashin said he did not believe Boris Nemtsov’s killers were from outside Russia, calling his murder “an act of terror to scare society”.

American Sniper becomes highest-grossing film release of 2014 in US

American Sniper has become the highest-grossing film release of 2014 in the US after beating The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.

Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper as Navy Seal Chris Kyle, American Sniper has taken $337.2 million since its limited release in December 2014.

The latest movie in The Hunger Games franchise has taken $336.8 million.

American Sniper had a limited release in US cinemas on December 25, to make it eligible for this year’s Oscars. A wider release followed in January.

According to Variety, it is the first time since 1998’s Saving Private Ryan that a “realistic”, R-rated drama has secured the largest box office takings of the year in the US.

American Sniper was nominated for six Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Bradley Cooper, but only won in the sound editing category.

Despite its popularity with US cinemagoers, American Sniper attracted criticism for both its depiction of the Iraq war and of sniper Chris Kyle, upon whose book the film is based.

Globally, Transformers: Age of Extinction is still the biggest film of 2014 having taking $1.1 billion in foreign markets, compared to American Sniper‘s $140 million.

Grexit: Yanis Varoufakis raises possible referendum if bailout negotiations fail

Greece’s Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has said it is possible that a referendum could be held if the eurozone rejects the country’s debt renegotiation plans.

The comments came ahead of today’s Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, where Greece is to give detailed plans of its debt and growth terms.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras reacted by urging Yanis Varoufakis to use “fewer words and more action”.

The finance ministry clarified that eurozone membership was not in doubt.

In an Italian newspaper interview on March 8 Yanis Varoufakis was asked what his options were if a deal was not agreed.

“If needed, if we encounter implacability, we will resort to the Greek people either through elections or a referendum,” he replied.Yanis Varoufakis Greece bailout referendum

This was interpreted by some as a threat to leave the eurozone if talks broke down, something the Greek government was quick to deny.

Greek officials pointed out that the words “for the euro” had been added to Yanis Varoufakis’s remarks in brackets in the article. Greece’s eurozone membership was “a given” and did not form any part of negotiations with the Eurogroup, they added.

Yanis Varoufakis later criticized the reports as “willful attempts to undermine the good course” of attempts to agree a deal with creditors.

In a widely leaked letter to the Eurogroup, Yanis Varoufakis set out seven key reforms which he hopes will appease eurozone lenders and allow the next installment of bailout money to be released.

Greece aims to save €200 million through public spending cuts, as well as streamlining bureaucracy and cracking down on tax evasion.

European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis has rejected the letter, telling a German newspaper that “a letter here or there isn’t going to change much.”

He said Greece must first implement its reforms, adding that he did not expect a deal to be completed at March 9 meeting.

Greece needs to agree terms so that it will become eligible for more credit from the eurozone and the IMF. This would in turn allow its banks to finance themselves from the European Central Bank.

Venezuela food shortage: Fingerprint scanners to be installed at grocery stores

In a move to reduce food hoarding and panic buying, Venezuela will install about 20,000 fingerprint scanners at grocery stores across the country.

Over the last year there have been long queues at supermarkets because of widespread shortages of basic goods.

President Nicolas Maduro said the shortages were due to manipulation of the food supply and prices.Venezuela food shortage

Last month the owners of several chains of supermarkets and drugstores were arrested for allegedly artificially creating long queues by not opening enough tills.

Nicolas Maduro has also accused Colombian food smugglers of buying up price-controlled goods in state-run supermarkets along the border.

Last week South American foreign ministers said the region would help Venezuela address the shortages.

The lack of staple foods and medicines in Venezuela has contributed to discontent and to frequent large, often violent anti-government demonstrations.

The economic crisis has been made worse by falling oil prices.

Venezuela’s plummeting currency rates and the falling price of oil by nearly half since November has diminished its supply of dollars to buy imported food.

Boko Haram: Niger and Chad launch offensive against Nigeria’s militant group

Niger and Chad forces have launched a ground and air offensive against militant group Boko Haram in north-eastern Nigeria, officials say.

The campaign is said to be targeting militants in Borno state.

The move came as Nigerian officials dismissed Boko Haram’s pledge of allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS) as a reaction to military pressure from Nigeria and its allies.

The pledge was posted online on March 7 in an audio message by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.

Abubakar Shekau called on Muslims everywhere to swear loyalty to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Boko Haram has been fighting an insurgency to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria since 2009, and in recent months the violence has increasingly spilled over into neighboring states.Niger and Chad armies attack Boko Haram in Nigeria

Chad, Cameroon and Niger have already been helping Nigeria in its battle against Boko Haram.

On March 6, the African Union endorsed the creation of a regional force of more than 8,000 troops to combat the group. However, the force’s remit will be limited to securing the Nigerian side of Lake Chad, rather than pushing further into Nigeria.

As the latest offensive began early on Sunday, a resident and an aid worker told AFP news agency there had been heavy arms fire close to Niger’s border with Nigeria.

A local radio station said that a convoy of more than 200 vehicles was moving towards the area, and that air strikes had been carried out on Saturday and early on Sunday.

The Nigerian military and troops from neighboring states have recently claimed some success in their campaign against Boko Haram, and Nigerian officials said the pledge of allegiance to IS was a sign of weakness

Army spokesman Col. Sami Usman Kukasheka said the Boko Haram leader was like a “drowning man”.

A spokesman for the Nigerian government, Mike Omeri, said Boko Haram needed help “as a result of the heavy casualties and bombardment and degrading of their capacity”.

However, Boko Haram militants have continued to launch deadly attacks.

On March 7, Boko Haram was blamed for a series of attacks in its former stronghold of Maiduguri, including suicide bombings, that left more than 50 people dead.

Nigeria postponed national elections by six weeks until March 28 in order to have more time to try to improve security in the north.

Col. Sami Usman Kukasheka called on Nigerians “to be more security conscious because given the onslaught on Boko Haram definitely they are bound to spring surprises”.

ISIS has forged links with other militant groups across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and in January, militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan pledged their allegiance.

Nick Gordon checks into rehab after Dr. Phil intervention

Nick Gordon has entered rehab after revealing his suicidal thoughts during an interview with Dr. Phil.

Dr. Phil McGraw sat down with Nick Gordon for an emergency intervention that will air on Wednesday, March 11, on Dr. Phil, to talk him through his various issues, including drug and alcohol abuse and panic attacks he has been experiencing in the wake of girlfriend Bobbi Kristina Brown’s hospitalization.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, who turned 22 on March 4, remains in a coma after she was discovered unresponsive in the bathtub at her Atlanta home on January 31.

According to E! News, Nick Gordon’s mother, Michelle, was the one who wanted the meeting with Dr. Phil, fearing that her son was suicidal.

“I’m so hurt I wanna do myself in, I know I have to strong,” Nick tweeted on March 3.

“As we sit here right now, my son’s life hangs in the balance,” Michelle Gordon told Dr. Phil, Nick by her side, in a snippet of the interview released by the show.

“When Whitney was found, he administered CPR to her and called me as he was standing in front of her saying, <<Mom, why couldn’t I do it? I couldn’t get air into her lungs>>.”

“He won’t let go of the guilt,” Michelle Gordon says.

“My heart is full of angry after the Browns have shut me out,” Nick Gordon tweeted on February 25, referring to his repeated claims that Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family has barred him from visiting his girlfriend in the hospital and he has been doing everything he could to see her.

“They don’t even know her. Sabotage.”

Bobby Brown’s camp, meanwhile, has said that Nick Gordon “declined” the chance to visit under conditions put forth by the family.

“Happy Birthday baby I wish I was there with you to hold you and be by your side,” Nick Gordon tweeted on March 4.

Zaur Dadayev and Anzor Gubashev charged over Boris Nemtsov murder

Zaur Dadayev and Anzor Gubashev have been charged in connection with the murder of Russian opposition activist Boris Nemtsov.

The Moscow court said one of the men, Zaur Dadayev, had admitted involvement in the shooting on a bridge near the Kremlin on February 27.

Zaur Dadayev and Anzor Gubashev are of Chechen origin.

Three other suspects were remanded in custody. A sixth man is reported to have killed himself in a standoff with police in the Chechen capital Grozny.

The suspect threw one grenade at the arresting officers and blew himself up with another, a security source told Interfax news agency.

Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister and veteran liberal politician, who was 55, was shot in the back four times as he was walking with his girlfriend within sight of the Kremlin. He was buried in Moscow on March 3.Zaur Dadayev has admitted involvement in Boris Nemtsov murder

Anzor Gubashev and Zaur Dadayev, who are both accused of organizing and carrying out the murder, were brought into court amid heavy security.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said Zaur Dedayev was a devout Muslim who was shocked by cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Russian investigators have previously said they were looking into the possibility that Boris Nemtsov was killed over his defense of Charlie Hebdo.

In a statement on his Instagram account, Ramazan Kadyrov also confirmed Zaur Dadayev had been a member of the Chechen police who was decorated for his bravery.

The other suspects include Anzor Gubashev’s younger brother Shagid Gubashev and two men named as Ramzan Bakhayev and Tamerlan Eskerkhanov. Reports say all three have denied any involvement in the murder.

Four of the men come from the northern Caucasus region and were detained in the republic of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya, Russian media say.

The Russian Investigations Committee is treating the case as a “contract killing”, Interfax news agency reported.

According to the sections of the criminal code cited in court, investigators believe the murder was carried out by a group of people, that it was committed on contract for financial gains, and that it also involved extortion and banditry, Interfax says.

President Vladimir Putin has condemned Boris Nemtsov’s murder and called for an end to “shameful” political killings in Russia.

However, leading opposition figure Alexei Navalny accused the Kremlin of ordering the assassination to cow the opposition amid Russia’s mounting economic problems.

Boris Nemtsov was killed just days before a march against the war in Ukraine that he was organizing.

Boris Nemtsov had also been drafting a report expected to expose covert Russian military involvement in the conflict.

Utah baby survives 14 hours in Spanish Fork river after car crash

An 18-month-old baby girl has been found alive in a car more than 14 hours after the vehicle plunged into Utah’s Spanish Fork river.

The little girl was discovered hanging upside down above water in her car seat by a fisherman on March 7, police said.

She was rushed to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where her condition has been upgraded from critical to stable.Utah baby found alive in Spanish Fork river

The girl’s 25-year-old mother, named as Lynn Groesbeck from Springville, was found dead in the driver’s seat.

Investigators believe the car fell into the Spanish Fork River after striking a cement barrier at about 22:30 local time on March 6.

A fisherman raised the alarm at 12:30 local time on March 7, after he saw the toddler dangling above the water as it flowed through the car.

Three police officers and four firefighters who entered the river to rescue the child were later treated in hospital for hypothermia.

Police said they would not be releasing any further details unless the baby’s condition changed. The girl’s name was not released.

Solar Impulse 2 round the world flight to begin on March 9

Solar Impulse 2’s 35,000km journey around the world is set to get under way on Monday, March 9.

The solar-powered plane will take off from Abu Dhabi and head east, first to Oman, and then to India.

Over the next five months, Solar Impulse 2 will skip from continent to continent, crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the process.

Swiss adventurers Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg will share the pilot duties in the single-seater vehicle.

They will stop off at various locations to rest and to carry out maintenance, and also to spread a campaigning message about clean technologies.

Andre Borschberg will start the journey with a takeoff from the Emirate’s international airport at about 06:30 local time.

The project has already set a number of world records for solar-powered flight, including making a high-profile transit of the US in 2013.

The round-the-world venture is altogether more dramatic and daunting, and has required the construction of an even bigger plane than the prototype, Solar Impulse-1.Solar Impulse 2 round the world journey 2015

This new model has a wingspan of 72m, which is wider than a 747 jumbo jet. And yet, it weighs only 2.3 tonnes.

Its light weight will be critical to its success.

Solar Impulse 2 has 17,000 solar cells that line the top of the wings, and the energy-dense lithium-ion batteries will use to sustain night-time flying.

Operating through darkness will be particularly important when the men have to cross the Pacific and the Atlantic.

The slow speed of their prop-driven plane means these legs will take several days and nights of non-stop flying to complete.

Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg – whoever is at the controls – will have to stay alert for nearly all of the time they are airborne.

They will be permitted only catnaps of up to 20 minutes – in the same way a single-handed, round-the-world yachtsman would catch small periods of sleep.

They will also have to endure the physical discomfort of being confined in a cockpit that measures just 3.8 cubic meters in volume – not a lot bigger than a public telephone box.

Flight simulators have helped the pilots to prepare, and each man has developed his own regimen to cope.

Andre Borschberg will use yoga to try to stay fresh. Bertrand Piccard is using self-hypnosis techniques.

The support team is well drilled. While the mission will be run out of a control room in Monaco, a group of engineers will follow the plane around the globe. They have a mobile hangar to house the plane when it is not in the air.

Bobbi Kristina Brown’s aunt Leolah Brown claims Nick Gordon is “under investigation for [Bobbi Kristina] attempted murder” in a new open letter criticizing Dr. Phil, who just taped a sit-down with Gordon and his mother.

Leolah Brown posted the message to Dr. Phil on Facebook on March 7.

However, Nick Gordon has not been charged with any crime at this point, nor have officials even laid out the specifics of the investigation into the circumstances leading to Bobbi Kristina Brown’s medical crisis.

This past week, Nick Gordon sat down with Dr. Phil for what became an unofficial intervention, during which he expressed suicidal thoughts and after which he reportedly entered rehab for drug abuse.

Leolah Brown wrote to Dr. Phil on Facebook:

Dr. Phil,

With all due respect, Nick Gordon is under investigation for the attempted murder of my niece Bobby Kristina Brown. We have strong evidence of foul play. Until this investigation is completed by law enforcement, I would ask that you or anyone else not provide this individual a platform to spin this situation to his benefit.

If Nick Gordon does not have the courage to speak with my brother Bobby Brown and/or law enforcement about what happened the day my niece’s body was found in a bathtub, he does not deserve to have a platform to speak to anyone of your caliber until this investigation is concluded.

Respectfully,

Leolah Brown

There has been tension between Nick Gordon and Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family for weeks regarding Gordon’s access to Whitney Houston’s daughter and his cooperation in the investigation.

Nia Guzman: Chris Brown’s baby mama faces child support reduction for dropping news

According to new reports, Chris Brown is going to battle his baby mama Nia Gonzalez, also known as Nia Guzman, in court in order to pay less child support for their 9-month-old daughter, Royalty.

The existence of Chris Brown’s baby was a secret until this week.

Chris Brown made a deal with Nia Guzman when he found out about Royalty last month, agreeing to monthly support payments higher than a judge would have ordered, in exchange for her public silence about their child, TMZ has reported.Chris Brown and Nia Guzman baby

When the baby bombshell exploded this week, Chris Brown allegedly blamed Nia Guzman (the names Nia Amey and Nia Gonzalez have also been used in various press reports) for the leak and is now acting to nullify their arrangement.

According to the gossip website, Chris Brown’s legal camp is preparing to file court documents asking for a judge to require that he pay formal child support.

It is expected that Chris Brown will wind up paying Nia Guzman less under such a judgment.

Tony Robinson death: Fatal shooting of black teenager by white police officer sparks protests in Madison

The fatal shooting of unarmed black 19-year-old Tony Robinson by a white police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, sparked protests in the city.

Peaceful protesters took to the college town’s streets with chants of “Black Lives Matter”.

Authorities say police fired after the officer was assaulted. The city’s police chief said he understood the anger, assuring demonstrators his department would defend their rights as he implored the community to act with restraint.

Tony Robinson died Friday, March 6, after being shot in his apartment following a confrontation with Officer Matt Kenny, who had forced his way inside after hearing a disturbance while responding to a call, authorities and neighbors said.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval on March 7 said Matt Kenny was injured, but didn’t provide details. It wasn’t clear whether Tony Robinson, who died at a hospital, was alone.

“He was unarmed. That’s going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public to accept,” Mike Koval said of Tony Robinson.Tony Robinson killed by white police officer in Madison

The department said Matt Kenny would not have been wearing a body camera.

Several dozen protesters who gathered outside the police department on March 7 held signs and chanted “Black Lives Matter” – a slogan adopted by activists and protesters nationwide after recent officer-involved deaths of unarmed blacks – before walking toward the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

The shooting came days after the U.S. Justice Department said it would not issue civil rights charges against Darren Wilson, the white former Ferguson, Missouri, officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black and unarmed, after a struggle in the street in August 2014.

Mike Koval said Matt Kenny, a more than 12-year veteran of the Madison department, also shot and killed a suspect in 2007, but was cleared of wrongdoing because it was a “suicide by cop-type” situation. In that shooting, Matt Kenny responded to a 911 call of a man with a gun and shot the man twice after police said he pointed the gun at officers. It turned out to be a pellet gun.

Matt Kenny has been placed on administrative leave pending results of an investigation by the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation.

Madison, about 80 miles west of Milwaukee, is the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin’s flagship campus. About 7% of the city’s 243,000 residents are black. Neighbors said Robinson’s apartment is in a two-story gray house on Williamson Street, known to many as Willy Street.

The women say they had left behind personal property like cell phones and were unable to retrieve them. When law enforcement officers arrived, they took the group back up to Justin Bieber’s room and helped resolve the conflict. There were no citations or arrests.

Later, Justin Bieber went to Miami’s IVY nightclub, where DJ Khaled was hosting a party. According to TMZ, the singer spent about $3,600 on booze including vodka and champagne, partying with a group including model Lira Galore.

Justin Bieber spent last weekend (including his actual birthday on March 1) popping champagne in the Caribbean with friends like Hailey Baldwin and Yovanna Ventura.

Eurovision 2015: Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas to represent UK as Electro Velvet

Alex Larke, who performs with the Rolling Clones, is teaming up with Bianca Nicholas to compete for the UK in May’s Eurovision Song Contest as Electro Velvet.

Their song, Still in Love With You, is an up-tempo electric swing track.

In 2014, Molly Smitten-Downes came 17th for the UK with Children of the Universe. This year’s contest is in Vienna on May 23.

The UK has only placed in the top 10 once since Jemini’s infamous “nul points” in 2003, when Jade Ewan was fifth in 2009 with the Andrew Lloyd Webber written song It’s My Time.

The last time the UK won was in 1997 when it was represented by Katrina and the Waves with Love Shine a Light.

Bianca Nicholas, 26, was a contestant on The Voice in 2013, although none of the judges swiveled their chair round in support of her performance, meaning she did not progress any further than the initial heats.Bianca Nicholas and Alex Larke Eurovision 2015

She released a single in 2011 – Hold on to Your Dreams – which sold enough copies to enter the top 100 singles chart.

Bianca Nicholas has the serious genetic condition cystic fibrosis, which affects the lungs, and has previously spoken about how singing has improved her breathing and lung function.

Due to her affiliation with the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Bianca Nicholas has sung in front of Royal Family members at charity galas.

Alex Larke, 35, has performed around the world with his Rolling Stones tribute act, and splits his time between performing and teaching in a primary school.

He said: “I feel incredibly privileged and humbled to be representing the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, for this massively historic 60th anniversary event.

“We have a fantastic song and will work as hard as is humanly possible to bring the contest home and make our great nation proud. It’s time to get this party started! See you in Vienna!”

The song Electro Velvet will be performing, Still in Love With You, was written by David Mindel and Adrian Bax White and chosen through an open selection process which saw hundreds of entries from both professional and amateur songwriters.

Malaysia remains committed to finding flight MH370, said PM Najib Razak on the first anniversary of its disappearance.

Relatives of the 239 missing passengers and crew are holding a series of remembrance ceremonies.

The Malaysian airliner was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished on March 8, 2014. No trace has ever been found.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian government has released its official report into the disappearance of flight MH370.

The report contains masses of technical information about the missing aircraft, its maintenance record, the background of the crew, and the various air traffic control and military radar tracking records of the plane.

It appears to offer no significant new information which might explain where the plane went, or what happened to it.

“No words can describe the pain the families of those on board are going through. The lack of answers and definitive proof – such as aircraft wreckage – has made this more difficult to bear,” said Najib Razak in a statement.

He added that the search team had followed the “little evidence that exists” but remained “hopeful” that the plane would be found.MH370 anniversary 2015

The international search team is focusing on an area of the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 1,000 miles off the coast of western Australia.

Earlier on Sunday, the families of MH370 crew members held a remembrance ceremony at the house of missing in-flight supervisor Patrick Gomez.

“We’re always thinking exactly what happened on that day itself, you know the conversations that we were having, the tears, the hugs that we were giving each other,” said his wife, Jacquita Gonzales.

The event has not been billed as a commemoration ceremony because many family members still believe that their loved ones are alive.

The search team is due to release an interim report about MH370 later today.

Earlier, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said that he was confident that the plane would be found in the southern Indian Ocean.

Liow Tiong Lai promised his government would continue to back the search and said he was confident they could complete the search operation “hopefully by May this year”.

He told AFP that investigators would go “back to the drawing board” if the search failed to yield results by May.

Some families of those on board the plane have accused the Malaysian authorities of hiding some information, but the transport minister urged them not to believe the conspiracy theories.

Earlier this year, the Malaysian government declared flight MH370 to have been lost with all on board, in a move it said was necessary to start processing compensation claims for the families.

Barack Obama delivers Selma 50th anniversary speech at Edmond Pettus Bridge

President Barack Obama has paid tributes to the “heroes” who took part in the Selma civil rights march in Alabama 50 years ago.

Barack Obama delivered a speech commemorating “Bloody Sunday” on March 7, 1965, when security forces attacked black demonstrators in the city.

The president said the marchers, who were campaigning for equal voting rights, had “given courage to millions”.

First Lady Michelle Obama and about 100 members of Congress also attended the event.

“Because of what they did, the doors of opportunity swung open not just for African-Americans, but for every American,” Barack Obama said, standing in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge where the violence took place.

A crowd of some 40,000 people watched as Barack Obama and his family led a symbolic walk across part of the bridge, accompanied by those who had made the march in 1965.

Police beat and used tear gas on demonstrators as they made their way over the crossing, on a day that became known as “Bloody Sunday”.

That event, and a follow-up march from Selma to Montgomery two weeks later, helped build momentum for approval of the Voting Rights Act by Congress later that year.Barack Obama Selma speech Edmond Pettus Bridge

The legislation, pushed by President Lyndon Johnson, removed all barriers preventing African-Americans from registering as voters.

Barack Obama reminded the American public that despite progress the fight against racism was not over.

He addressed the recent police killings of unarmed black men and teenagers, which had triggered protests in several US cities.

“This nation’s long racial history still casts its long shadow upon us. We know the march is not yet over, the race is not yet won,” he said.

Barack Obama’s comments followed demonstrations in the northern state of Wisconsin on March 6, triggered by reports that a black man had been shot by a police officer.

The 19-year-old, identified as Tony Robinson, was unarmed according to police. It is alleged he assaulted the officer before shots were fired.

Barack Obama also condemned new attempts by state governments to restrict voting rights.

“Right now, in 2015, 50 years after Selma, there are laws across this country designed to make it harder for people to vote. As we speak, more of such laws are being proposed,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the Voting Rights Act, the culmination of so much blood and sweat and tears… stands weakened, its future subject to partisan rancor.”

Georgia congressman John Lewis, a Democrat who was among those injured in the violence 50 years ago, also addressed the crowd of more than 40,000.

He said: “I want to thank each and every one of you who marched across the bridge on Bloody Sunday. You didn’t have to do but you did.

“Six hundred people marched into history. We were so peaceful, so quiet. No-one saying a word.

“We were beaten, tear gassed, some of us were left bloody here on this bridge. But we never became bitter or hostile.”

President George W. Bush – who was in office between 2001 and 2009 – also took part in the commemorations.

Abubakar Shekau announces Boko Haram joins ISIS

The message, which has not be verified, was posted on the Nigerian militant group’s Twitter account and appeared to be by Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau.

Boko Haram’s insurgency has threatened Nigeria’s territorial integrity and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

The militant group has carried out frequent bombings that have left thousands dead and has also attacked targets in the capital, Abuja.

ISIS has forged links with other militant groups across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

In November 2014, ISIS leader Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi accepted pledges of allegiance from jihadists in Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

In January 2015, militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan announced that they were forming an ISIS province.

Women On 20’s group campaigns to put woman on $20 bill

As women are absent on American currency, “Women On 20s” group is trying to change that through a campaign aiming to see one of 15 female American history-makers on the $20 bill.

The group says President Barack Obama would merely need to instruct the Treasury secretary to change how bills are printed to immortalize the contributions of women to American society.

Women On 20’s explained why the $20 bill. One reason is that the new bill would help commemorate the 100th anniversary in 2020 of the constitutional amendment that gave women the right to vote.Women on 20s campaign

Additionally, the $20 bill’s current resident – former President Andrew Jackson – doesn’t have the best reputation, military achievements aside, given the mass migration of Native Americans implemented during his presidency.

Women On 20s would like to see on the $20 bill is Sojourner Truth, a slave who became an outspoken abolitionist; Clara Barton, a Civil War nurse and American Red Cross founder; Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who kick-started the women’s suffrage movement with the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention; and Frances Perkins, who as labor secretary helped bring about some of the most important policies of President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration.

The campaign supporters can vote for their favorite women in a primary round that will narrow it down to three candidates before a final vote.

Nelson Shanks painted Monica Lewinsky reference in Bill Clinton’s official presidential portrait

Nelson Shanks, who painted the portrait of President Bill Clinton that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, revealed he included a reference to Monica Lewinsky in the official painting.

In an interview with the Philadelphia Daily News, Nelson Shanks said he included a shadow over the fireplace cast from a blue dress on a mannequin.

Nelson Shanks said painting Bill Clinton was his hardest assignment because “he is probably the most famous liar of all time”. So he added the nod to the Lewinsky scandal because it had cast a shadow over Bill Clinton’s presidency.

“He and his administration did some very good things, of course, but I could never get this Monica thing completely out of my mind, and it is subtly incorporated in the painting,” the painter said.

Nelson Shanks told the Daily News: “If you look at the left-hand side of it there’s a mantel in the Oval Office and I put a shadow coming into the painting and it does two things. It actually literally represents a shadow from a blue dress that I had on a mannequin, that I had there while I was painting it, but not when he was there. It is also a bit of a metaphor in that it represents a shadow on the office he held, or on him.”

The artist did not reveal this nine years ago when the portrait was unveiled.

Nelson Shanks alluded in the interview with the Daily News that Bill and Hillary Clinton are aware of the symbolism in the painting.
