Nelson Mandela memoir: Long Walk to Freedom sequel to be published in 2016

Nelson Mandela’s memoir, a sequel to his 1995 autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, will be published in 2016.

The book will be based on a hand-written draft and completed by Nelson Mandela’s former advisers.

Nelson Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel, said he began work on the manuscript in 1998, towards the end of his five-year presidential term.

Publishers Pan Macmillan said the book would be “candid and clear-eyed about the difficulties he faced in office”.

Graca Machel said Nelson Mandela saw it as “a natural progression” from Long Walk to Freedom which covered his early years, his political struggle against South Africa’s apartheid regime, and the 27 years he spent in prison.Nelson Mandela memoir

The book went on to become one of the best-selling political memoirs of all time.

Editorial director Georgina Morley said the new book, based on material from the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s archives, would “remind readers everywhere what he stood for”.

An exact publication date was not announced.

Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and went on to win the presidency in South Africa’s first all-race election in 1994.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize, along with former South African President F.W. de Klerk, in 1993 for negotiating the end of white-minority rule.

Nelson Mandela stepped down in 1999 to concentrate on charity work.

Literary agent Jonny Geller said the book would be an important historical document.

“A lot of it is a political memoir about being president, his relationships with the army, with the unions and with the tribes. What’s really interesting is that he can’t help but talk about leadership and talk about the most important thing which is the transition from freedom to power.

“This will be a very inspiring book because it’s actually about what you do when you actually have power.”

Leslie Robinson: Barack Obama’s niece threatened prior to NCAA game

President Obama’s niece Leslie Robinson was threatened before last night’s Princeton-Maryland NCAA tournament women’s basketball game, USA Today reported.

College Park security was reportedly increased before the match.

According to the report, an 8-minute voicemail was received at the University of Maryland athletic department offices this afternoon in which a woman said a man was driving on campus with a Glock handgun in his possession.Barack Obama's niece Leslie Robinson threatened before NCAA game

The caller linked the man’s appearance on campus to last night’s game and Leslie Robinson, the daughter of Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama’s brother, who is a freshman forward at Princeton. Leslie Robinson was not told of the threat, but Princeton coach Courtney Banghart was aware of it.

In addition to normal game security, undercover security officers were near the Princeton bench. Secret Service officers also were in the arena due to the presence of Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Barack Obama attended first-round game between Princeton and Wisconsin-Green Bay on March 21, but was not at last night’s game.

New Senate Bill To Create Online Database Of Asbestos Products

washington-dc

Credit

The US Senate has announced plans to create an online database of all legal products sold on the market today that still contain asbestos. It has been known for years the substance is capable of causing a dangerous and aggressive form of cancer. However, there are hundreds of thousands of items that have not yet replaced the material with something more suitable. Almost 10,000 people die every single year in the US from conditions brought about by exposure to asbestos, and so the new move is welcomed by campaigners and the public alike.

The people behind the bill are Edward J. Markey and Dick Durbin. Both of them are current US Senators, and they recently sponsored the Reducing Exposure to Asbestos Database Act. Their input has helped to amend the original bill to include a public database of products that contain asbestos which can be accessed for free online. Campaigners for the removal of asbestos from all products are happy to see things are moving in the right direction.

Unlike Ebola and other conditions that are currently in the public spotlight, the cancer caused by asbestos can take a long time to manifest. So, it is more difficult for people affected to make a claim against companies that produce containing products. However, it is thought the new bill will help to make that a thing of the past. If people can look online to find out which products they use have asbestos in them, they will have an easier time identifying the causes for their illness.

Certain manufacturers that choose to include the substance in their products are less than enthusiastic about the senate’s new act. They claim that asbestos levels in the items they produce are far too low to have any adverse effects. They say that everything they sell meets standard industry guidelines, and they are more than conscious of their customer’s health worries. Mesothelioma (the type of cancer caused by asbestos) requires the patient to have been in contact with much higher levels.

Since the news hit the press, the amount of people getting in touch with a mesothelioma lawyer has increased significantly. That suggests the problem might be more serious than anyone thought. Unless those people are simply trying to cash, it appears more people are affected by the condition than first thought.

The toxic chemical is still used in many different products sold in the US. Lots of building materials and car parts still contain traces. While asbestos is currently banned in many different countries around the world, it is still perfectly legal in the US. The World Health Organisation says that it accounts for more than 107,000 deaths across the world every single year. Campaigners hope improved public education will force the government to follow the UK in banning the substance altogether.

The bill is still waiting for approval from the Senate, but all evidence points towards it being implemented very soon. Could this be an essential step on the ladder to becoming an asbestos-free nation? That remains to be seen.

Germanwings flight 4U 9525 crashes in French Alps killing 150 people

A Germanwings Airbus A320 plane has crashed in the southern French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne, French aviation officials and police have said.

German airline Germanwings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa.

Germanwings flight 4U 9525 had been en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf with 144 passengers and six crew.

French President Francois Hollande said: “The conditions of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, lead us to think there are no survivors.”

He said the crash was a tragedy, adding that the area was very difficult to access.

President Francois Hollande later called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to express his sympathy, the French presidency said.

Spain’s King Felipe, on a state visit to France, thanked the French government for its help and said he was cancelling the rest of his visit.Germanwings plane crash France

The plane issued a distress call at 10:47 local time, the French interior ministry said, although details have not been released.

Search-and-rescue teams are headed to the crash site at Meolans-Revels, said regional council head Eric Ciotti.

French PM Manuel Valls said he had sent Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to the scene and a ministerial crisis cell had been set up to co-ordinate the incident.

The interior ministry said debris had been located at an altitude of 6,500ft.

Spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told BFM TV that it would be “an extremely long and extremely difficult” search-and-rescue operation because of the remoteness.

Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr tweeted: “We do not yet know what has happened to flight 4U 9525. My deepest sympathy goes to the families and friends of our passengers and crew.

“If our fears are confirmed, this is a dark day for Lufthansa. We hope to find survivors.”

The Airbus A320 is a single-aisle passenger jet popular for short- and medium-haul flights.

Germanwings wrote on its website: “We must confirm to our deepest regret that Germanwings flight 4U 9525 from Barcelona to Dusseldorf has suffered an accident over the French Alps. The flight was being operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, and was carrying 144 passengers and six crew members. Lufthansa and Germanwings have established a telephone hotline. The toll-free 0800 11 33 55 77 number is available to all the families of the passengers involved for care and assistance. Everyone at Germanwings and Lufthansa is deeply shocked and saddened by these events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the passengers and crew members.”

Bardo Museum reopening delayed over security concerns

Tunisia’s Bardo museum reopening after last week’s attack that killed at least 22 people has been delayed until March 29.

Bardo museum had been due to reopen on Tuesday morning, March 24, but there will now only be a symbolic ceremony.

Security concerns appear to have halted the reopening.

The reopening, less than a week after the attacks, was intended to show the gunmen “haven’t achieved their goal”.

Only the media will be allowed inside the museum on March 24. A small rally was held in front of the museum.Tunisia Bardo Museum reopening delayed

There are fears the attack – claimed by Islamic State (ISIS) – will hit Tunisia’s vital tourism industry.

On March 23, Tunisian PM Habib Essid dismissed six police chiefs.

Habib Essid’s office said he had noted several security deficiencies during a visit to the museum, which houses a major collection of Roman mosaics and other antiquities.

Two of the gunmen were killed by the security forces during last Wednesday’s attack, while a third is on the run, officials said.

The attack was the deadliest in Tunisia since the uprising which led to the overthrow of long-serving ruler Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

Suspects have been arrested over the attack but just two gunmen were thought to have raided the museum.

They are said to have been trained in Libya in an area controlled by ISIS militants.

As the president toured the three dozen exhibits, he splashed water in a wave tank to demonstrate how a lakeside power-generating system works, and got the lowdown on the science behind the show.

A couple of the projects featured robots, including one that catches and throws balls.

This was the fifth White House Science Fair, which Barack Obama said was the “most fun event of the year”.

The president took the opportunity to tout science, technology, engineering and math education, also known as STEM, and touted his administration’s STEM initiatives as well.

Israel denies spying on Iran nuclear talks

Israel has denied allegations that it spied on talks between Iran and the US over Iran’s nuclear program.

The claims, reported in the Wall Street Journal, were “utterly false”, said an Israeli official.

According to the report, Israel wanted details of the talks in order to build a case against a nuclear deal with Iran.

Earlier this month, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told the US Congress that a deal being discussed could “pave Iran’s path to the bomb”.

The US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China are seeking to reach agreement to curtail Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

They fear Iran wants to build a nuclear bomb – something Iran denies, insisting it is merely exercising its right to peaceful nuclear power.

The sides aim to reach a framework deal by the end of March.

According to Tuesday’s report in the WSJ, Israel began eavesdropping on the talks last year and also acquired information from confidential briefings with US officials and diplomatic contacts in Europe.Israel spying Iran nuclear talks

The White House uncovered the operation, the report said, when US intelligence agencies spying on Israel intercepted messages among Israeli officials that could only have come from closed-door talks.

US officials were particularly upset that Israel had sought to share the information with US lawmakers and others to build a case against the deal, the report added.

The report comes amid tense relations between the White House and Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

The Israeli prime minister angered Washington in his recent re-election campaign when he said he would not allow a Palestinian state if he was returned to office.

Benjamin Netanyahu later tempered his statement, saying he did want a two-state solution, but that “circumstances have to change”.

Angelina Jolie’s ovaries removed to prevent cancer

Angelina Jolie has had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure against cancer.

Writing in the New York Times, Angelina Jolie said she chose to have the surgery as she carries a gene that gave her a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer.

In 2013, Angelina Jolie, whose mother died from cancer, had a double mastectomy.

“It is not easy to make these decisions,” she said.

“But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue.”

In the article, titled Angelina Jolie Pitt: Diary of a Surgery, the 39-year-old actress wrote about the procedure, saying: “It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause.”

Angelina Jolie, who is also a director and UN envoy, will now take hormone replacements.Angelina Jolie ovaries removed

She elected to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after a check-up which put her in the clear from showing the early stages of ovarian cancer, but showed she still at risk of developing the disease which also killed her grandmother and aunt.

“My doctors indicated I should have preventive surgery about a decade before the earliest onset of cancer in my female relatives,” wrote Angelina Jolie.

“My mother’s ovarian cancer was diagnosed when she was 49. I’m 39.”

Angelina Jolie, who is married to Brad Pitt, has six children, three of whom are adopted.

“Regardless of the hormone replacements I’m taking, I am now in menopause. I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes.

“But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”

Angelina Jolie added: “It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer. I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family.

“I know my children will never have to say: <<Mom died of ovarian cancer>>.”

Study: Why sleeping more than 8 hours may be bad for your health?

0

A British research carried out over the past 10 years appears to show that adults who usually sleep for less than six hours or more than eight, are at risk of dying earlier than those sleep for between six and eight hours.

To put it more scientifically, there is a gradual increase in mortality risk for those who fall outside the six-to-eight-hour band.

Franco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine and epidemiology at the University of Warwick in the UK, has analyzed 16 studies, in which overall more than a million people were asked about their sleeping habits and then followed up over time.

Prof. Franco Cappuccio put the people involved into three broad groups:

  • those who said they slept less than six hours a night
  • those who said they slept for between six and eight hours
  • those who said they slept for more than eight hours

His analysis showed that 12% more of the short sleepers had died when they were followed up, compared to the medium sleepers.

However, 30% more of the long sleepers had died, compared to the medium sleepers.

That’s a significant increase in mortality risk, roughly equivalent to the risk of drinking several units of alcohol per day, though less than the mortality risk that comes from smoking.

Prof. Franco Cappuccio was aware of the possibility that people sleeping too long might be depressed, or might be using sleeping pills. He corrected for this, though, and found the association was still there.

His theory is that people who sleep for more than eight hours sometimes have an underlying health problem that is not yet showing in other symptoms.

So, it’s not the long sleep that is causing the increased mortality risk, it’s the hidden illness.

Prof. Shawn Youngstedt of Arizona State University carried out a small study involving 14 young adults, persuading them to spend two hours more in bed per night for three weeks.

They reported back that they suffered from “increases in depressed mood” as Shawn Youngstedt puts it, and also “increases in inflammation” – specifically, higher levels in the blood of a protein called IL-6, which is connected with inflammation.

The participants in the study also complained about soreness and back pain. This makes Prof. Shawn Youngstedt wonder whether problem with long sleep is the prolonged inactivity that goes with it.

He has now been carrying out an experiment where long-sleeping and average-sleeping adults are asked to spend an hour less in bed each night. The results will be published soon, he says.Sleeping more than 8 hours may be bad for your health

Anyone studying sleep has to contend with a number of difficulties. One is that it’s often not possible to measure sleep very accurately.

“We tend to rely on very simple methods of asking people on average how many hours they sleep a night. It has to be taken with a pinch of salt,” says Prof. Franco Cappuccio.

“Naturally, you have to rely on your memory, and… you don’t know if you’re reporting time in bed or time asleep and whether you’re accounting for naps, and so forth.”

Apparently we have a general tendency to overestimate how long we’ve been asleep. And when it comes to quality of sleep, all experts seem to agree it could affect your health, but it’s even harder to measure than how long you sleep.

Another caveat is that babies, children and teenagers all have different sleep requirements than adults.

If it’s the case that less than six hours of sleep is too little for an adult, and more than eight hours is too much, what is the ideal amount – what do our bodies want?

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that until the late 17th Century people did not sleep in one long uninterrupted stretch, but in two segments, separated by a period of one or two hours in which they prayed, read, chatted, smoked, went to the toilet or even visited neighbors.

That may be more natural than the current tendency to sleep – or try to – in one stretch.

Putting this question to one side, and focusing on the total number of hours spent asleep, Prof Franco Cappuccio says three-quarters of people in the Western world sleep between six and eight hours a night on average, the range associated with the best results in terms of length of life.

The magic number, according to Dr. Gregg Jacobs, of the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School may actually be seven.

“Seven hours sleep keeps turning up over and over again,” he says.

He points, for example, to the National Sleep Foundation’s annual poll of a random sample of adults in the US.

“The typical adult today [in that poll] reports seven hours of sleep. And that actually seems to be the median sleep duration in the adult population around the world. That suggests there’s something around seven hours of sleep that’s kind of natural for the brain.”

If you enjoy sleeping, spend a lot of time in bed and feel good, you’re probably just fine. There’s no hard evidence that extra time asleep, or just lying down and relaxing, is going to kill you.

Lee Kuan Yew death: Singapore declares seven days of national mourning

0

Singapore has declared seven days of national mourning following the death of its founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.

Lee Kuan Yew, who was 91, led Singapore’s transformation from a small port city to one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

World leaders have paid tribute to Lee Kuan Yew, who served as the city-state’s prime minister for 31 years.

President Barack Obama described Lee Kuan Yew as a “giant of history” whose advice had been sought by other world leaders.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Lee Kuan Yew was a widely respected strategist and statesman, and Russian President Vladimir Putin described him as one of the “patriarchs” of world politics.

The period of national mourning will culminate in a state funeral next Sunday and Lee Kuan Yew ‘s body is to lie in state at parliament from March 25 to 28.Singapore declares seven days of national mourning for Lee Kuan Yew death

A private family wake is taking place on March 23 and 24.

News of Lee Kuan Yew’s death came in a government statement that said he had “passed away peacefully” in the early hours of Monday at Singapore General Hospital.

Lee Kuan Yew had been in hospital for several weeks with pneumonia and was on life support.

State television broke away from its normal schedules and broadcast rolling tributes.

As evening fell, many Singaporeans were continuing to arrive at the Istana, the compound housing the president’s official residence and the prime minister’s office, where a book of condolence has been placed.

Earlier, some chanted “Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee” as a hearse carrying the former leader’s body arrived at the compound.

An area has also been set aside outside the hospital for flowers and other tributes.

Books of condolence have also been opened at all Singapore’s overseas missions.

In an emotional televised address, Lee Kuan Yew’s son, PM Lee Hsien Loong, paid tribute to him.

“He fought for our independence, built a nation where there was none, and made us proud to be Singaporeans. We won’t see another man like him,” he said.

Business in bustling Singapore carried on as normal. At the stock exchange, the normal stream of market prices displayed on a bank of screens instead read: Remembering Lee Kuan Yew, September 16, 1923 to March 23, 2015.

Lee Kuan Yew – widely known as LKY – oversaw Singapore’s independence from Britain and separation from Malaysia and co-founded the People’s Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since 1959.

He set about creating a highly educated work force fluent in English, and reached out to foreign investors to turn Singapore into a manufacturing hub.

Lee Kuan Yew embarked on a program of slum clearance, industrialization and tackling corruption. He was a fierce advocate of a multi-racial Singapore.

However, Lee Kuan Yew also introduced tight controls, and one of his legacies was a clampdown on the press – tight restrictions that remain in place today.

Dissent and political opponents were ruthlessly quashed. Today, PAP remains firmly in control. There are currently six opposition lawmakers in parliament.

Other measures, such as corporal punishment, a ban on chewing gum and the government’s foray into matchmaking for Singapore’s brightest – to create smarter babies – led to perceptions of excessive state interference.

Lee Kuan Yew criticized what he saw as the overly liberal approach of the US and the West, saying it had “come at the expense of orderly society”.

How to Reform Your Business Without Spending Big

0

Sometimes things go wrong in even the very best businesses. It’s hard to keep standards high all the time. But when things do slip and problems arise, it’s important to respond quickly and make sure you sort out the problem and makes the necessary changes to your company.

You might have to make minor changes to your operations, or you might have to overhaul the entire company. But reforms can be made with relatively cost involved if you think creatively though. Throwing money at a situation usually isn’t the best way to resolve it. There are so many better and more effective ways to change a company’s ethics and practices. It’s just a matter of putting in the time and effort.

So if you want to make changes to improve a failing company these tips should be able to help you back on the road to prosperity.

business-photo

Identify the Key Problems

If you’re looking to reform your business, the chances are you’re having problems with the company in its current form. So, the first thing to do is identify what caused (or is causing) your main problems. This might be simple if you know exactly what went wrong, but you might need to carry out an investigation into what happened. This will take more time but should be worth it, in the long run.

Once you’ve rooted out the problem, you can start to implement changes to the company to ensure its long-term stability and future progress. This can be a painful process, but it’s vital if the company is going to stand any chance of success.

Get Rid of What Caused Your Problems

Problem elements within the business need to be dealt with swiftly once they’re identified. Sometimes the causes for your business’s failure or regression are to be found within your existing workforce. You should never rush to conclusions about your staff or their conduct, but if an investigation has found them at fault, it might be best for everyone if you part ways.

If you are going to sack an employee, make sure you do it tactfully and cleanly. You don’t want to cause any fallout. Give them the money they’re earned, thank them for their service and then terminate their employment.

Bring in New Staff

When old staff move on, it’s vital to replace them with even better workers. Bringing in new, experienced employees can be a great way of improving the business as a whole too. Fresh faces can breathe new life into a company and provide it with a new outlook on existing problems you’ve been facing.

Every company wants to bring in the best employees possible, so you need to make your company an attractive prospect to potential employees. It’s not just them that should be impressing you; you should be impressing them too. Sell your vision of the company and its future to them and tell them how they can be a part of it.

Restructure the Company and Delegate Responsibility

A lot of companies fail as a result of mismanagement and misconduct near the top of the company. If this has happened to you, think about how you can restructure the company and hand out more responsibilities to your employees.

You could even think about changing the way the company is run entirely. You could make it so that every employee holds a stake in the company. That way the company is run on a co-operative basis. This makes for a more productive workforce because everyone is invested in the company’s success.

White House 2016: Ted Cruz launches presidential campaign at Liberty University

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has made individual liberty the key theme of his presidential campaign announcement.

Speaking at Liberty University in Virginia, Ted Cruz is one of several Republican hopefuls to emerge from the Tea Party movement.

He described his mission as “reigniting the promise of America” because “for so many Americans the promise of America seems more and more distant”.

Ted Cruz, 44, is the first high-profile Republican to officially enter the 2016 race.

He urged millions of “courageous conservatives” to rise up and he called on Americans to come together to say: “We demand our liberty.”

The speech followed a middle-of-the-night campaign announcement on Twitter.

Making an appeal to cultural conservatives and religious Republicans, he said: “Our rights don’t come from man but from God Almighty.”

Ted Cruz talked the crowd through his childhood and religious faith before moving on to lay out his political agenda.

He detailed his parents’ journey from Cuba in 1957 and discussed his early childhood in Canada – where he was born – after his father abandoned him and his mother.

Ted Cruz’s father, now an evangelical preacher, moved to the United States and developed a deep Christian faith before returning to his family and moving them to the US.

He spoke on the Senate floor for over 21 hours in a marathon speech that contributed to the 2013 government shutdown and was aimed at encouraging his fellow lawmakers to repeal the president’s healthcare reform, nicknamed ObamaCare.

The speech included a reading of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham to his daughters, who were said to be watching their father on television.

He later joked that the event featured hours of his “favorite sound” – his own voice.

Before entering politics, Ted Cruz worked as a high-profile lawyer representing the State of Texas before the Supreme Court. He also taught law in Texas.

In the George W. Bush administration, Ted Cruz worked for the Federal Trade Commission and as an associate deputy attorney general at the Justice Department.

Tunisia Bardo Museum attack: Six police chiefs fired following attack

0

Six Tunisian police chiefs have been fired following last week’s attack on the famous Bardo Museum, PM Habib Essid has announced.

PM Habib Essid had noted several security deficiencies during a visit to the museum, his office said.

The Islamic State (ISIS) said it carried out the attack on Bardo museum in the capital, Tunis, killing 23 people, mostly European tourists.

Two of the gunmen were killed by the security forces, while a third was on the run, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said.

“There were certainly three attackers… there is one who is on the run, he won’t get far,” President Beji Caid Essebsi said on March 22.

The attack was the deadliest in Tunisia since the uprising which led to the overthrow of long-serving ruler Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

The police chiefs of Tunis and the museum were among those dismissed, Habib Essid’s spokesman Mofdi Mssedi told AFP news agency.

Habib Essebsi said in an interview with French media that a monument would be erected in memory of the victims.

The gunmen are said to have been trained in Libya in an area controlled by ISIS militants.

The two gunmen seen in the video were named as Yassine Laabidi and Hatem Khachnaoui. They were both killed in a gunfight with security forces inside the building.

In an earlier interview with Paris Match, Habib Essebsi said that “shortcomings” in Tunisia’s security system meant “the police and intelligence services had not been through enough in protecting the museum”.

However, Habib Essebsi added that the security services “reacted very efficiently” to the attack and had helped save dozens of lives.

Twenty foreigners were among those killed in the attack, including British, Japanese, French, Italian and Colombian tourists.

Following the attack, large numbers of Tunisians gathered outside the museum to protest against terrorism.

Tunisia has seen an upsurge in Islamist extremism since the 2011 revolution – the event that sparked the Arab Spring.

Starbucks has decided to remove #Race Together hashtag from customers’ cups.

The diversity and racial inequality campaign has been ditched after it was criticized as opportunistic and inappropriate. Starbucks wanted to encourage its customers to discuss about racism while they enjoy their coffees.

Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson said the coffee chain’s race initiative would carry on without the messages.Starbucks drops Race Together initiative

Race Together campaign was launched after national protests in the US over several police killings of black men in New York and Ferguson, Missouri.

“While there has been criticism of the initiative – and I know this hasn’t been easy for any of you – let me assure you that we didn’t expect universal praise,” a company memo from CEO Howard Schultz said.

Some customers said they didn’t want to talk about race while being served coffee.

The #racetogether hashtag was also hijacked after being promoted on Twitter.

Cinderella waist scandal: Lily James dismisses criticism as irrelevant

Cinderella star Lily James says criticism about her waist being made to appear too thin in the movie is “irrelevant”.

Disney’s live action adaptation has faced a backlash from parents who claim the character has an unnaturally small waist.

Lily James, 25, reportedly had to go on a liquid diet to fit into the tight-fitting corset for the role.

“Why on earth are we focusing on something so irrelevant?” the actress asked reporters at the UK premiere.

“I’ve had friends’ kids and a little boy Daniel who is nine and he said, <<It’s amazing how you promised your mum to be kind and good and remembered it>>.

“You just thought, <<That’s the message>>.”Cinderella waist scandal

The movie has been criticized ever since a trailer showed Lily James in a blue princess ball gown with a tiny waist.

Some people accused filmmakers of digitally resizing it to make it look smaller, but the stars denied that at the premiere.

Other critics say Cinderella is an unhealthy female role model and that it’s undone some of the work of Frozen because it suggests she needs Prince Charming to get by.

Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden, who plays the role, says that’s nonsense.

Cinderella also stars Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine, Stellan Skarsgard as the grand duke and Derek Jacobi as the king.
