Cuba elections 2015: At least two dissidents run in local municipal vote

At least two Cuban dissidents will be standing for the first time in municipal elections on April 19.

Hildebrando Chaviano is an independent journalist and lawyer, and Yuniel Lopez a member of an outlawed political party, the Independent and Democratic Cuba Party.

Yuniel Lopez and Hildebrando Chaviano are standing for places on local councils in Havana.

Their election would be unprecedented in Cuba’s single-party system.

Both Hildebrando Chaviano and Yuniel Lopez told foreign press agencies they thought the government was caught off guard by the strength of their support in the opening round.

Like half of the 27,000 candidates for municipal posts, the two were selected by a show of hands in a local neighborhood meeting. The final round of the elections is by secret vote – there is no campaigning.Cuba municipal elections 2015

“We have to take advantage of the moment,” Hildebrando Chaviano said.

“No-one from the government was expecting us to be nominated and even less that we would become candidates.”

Yuniel Lopez said: “Some people say that there is fear in Cuba, and I say that people have lost their fear.”

They are running for seats on municipal assemblies that oversee local matters that include water supplies, street repairs and insect fumigation.

Municipal assemblies also nominate candidates for half the representatives on provincial assemblies.

The provincial assemblies then nominate candidates for half the members of the National Assembly, which elects Cuba’s ruling Council of State, which in turn elects the president.

The other half of the candidates at municipal and provincial level are selected by a government electoral commission, ensuring continued Communist Party control.

President Raul Castro began introducing gradual but wide-ranging economic reforms in 2010.

He also promised changes to the electoral system, but has yet to provide details.

Observers say the fact that dissidents are on the ballot is the first indication that at least in appearance, Cuban authorities may be softening their control on politics.

Tony Abbott skols a beer in only 7 seconds

Australia’s PM Tony Abbot was filmed drinking a large glass of beer in only 7 seconds.

Tony Abbott was at a bar in east Sydney on April 18 along with players from the UTS Bats Australian Rules football team.

Some members of the team shouted chants encouraging the prime minister to finish his drink in one move.

Tony Abbott finished the schooner – around two-thirds of a pint – in a little more than 7 seconds.Tony Abbott drinking beer

One of the team’s coaches, Simon Carrodus, told Australian Women’s Weekly: “He proceeds to reach down and grab a schooner and he drank from head-to-toe the entire schooner, dribbling little bits on his shirt.

“He was proud as punch.”

One of Tony Abbott’s predecessors, Bob Hawke, boasted of breaking a world record by drinking two-and-a-half pints of beer in only 11 seconds.

In 2012, at the age of 82, Bob Hawke was filmed drinking a large beer in seconds at a cricket match.

Tony Abbott said last year he enjoyed “a drink on social occasions” but warned of the perils of binge drinking.

The prime minister wrote: “There’s a world of difference between having two or three drinks a night and occasionally a bit more on a Saturday night and this new binge culture.”

After the footage was posted, Tony Abbott came in for some criticism.

One Twitter user said: “Whoop dee doo Abbott chugged a beer. Still can’t run a government.”

Many of the responses were congratulatory. Ben Cubby, the deputy editor of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, wrote on Twitter: “Say what you like, but Abbott did well with that beer.”

Zebras go on the loose in Brussels

Three zebras have been spotted going on the loose in Brussels, Belgium.

The animals trotted through the streets after escaping from a local ranch, but were soon captured following an unlikely police chase.

Bernard Luyckx, a friend of the zebras’ owner, said the animals were apparently upset by the sale of some of their stable-mates.Zebras free in Brussels

“Some of the horses got sold and the other zebras got mad and trampled the gates and fled into the streets. Luckily there were no injuries, nobody got hurt, the zebras too.”

He said locals got “a free safari” on April 17.

The dazzle of zebras, to everyone’s delight, did at one point appear to cross a zebra crossing.

Melbourne: Five teenagers arrested over alleged terror plot at ANZAC Day event

Five teenage suspects have been arrested in Australia after police foiled an Islamic State-inspired plot to carry out an attack at ANZAC Day event in Melbourne.

One 18-year-old has been charged with conspiring to commit a terrorist act.

The men were planning to target police at an ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) memorial event in Melbourne next week, police said.

About 200 police officers took part in the counter-terrorism operation in Melbourne early on Saturday, April 18.

Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Neil Gaughan told reporters that evidence suggested the suspects had been influenced by ISIS.

One of the men, Sevdet Besim, appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 18.ANZAC Day terror plot Melbourne

Victoria state police say a second man held on terrorism-related offences is also likely to be charged.

A third man, also 18, was arrested on weapons charges and two other teenagers, aged 18 and 19, were in custody and assisting with inquiries.

Officials referred to possible attacks using “edged weapons”, but Neil Gaughan said there was no evidence to suggest there was “a planned beheading”.

The men were “associates” of Abdul Numan Haider, a teenager shot dead in September 2014 after he stabbed two officers, police said.

ANZAC Day is an annual day of remembrance for servicemen and women from Australia and New Zealand. A series of events are planned for next week to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli, Turkey.

Australian PM Tony Abbott urged people to turn up to memorial events as planned.

“The best thing we can do to counter terrorism… as individuals is to lead normal lives,” he said, adding that the authorities were doing everything possible to keep people safe.

Police said that although officers were the primary target of the alleged plot there was also a threat to the public.

Search operations were continuing at several addresses in the south-east of Melbourne on April 18.

Daniel Andrews, the premier of Victoria, said the police presence at ANZAC Day events would be “significantly increased”.

“These individuals arrested today are not people of faith, they don’t represent any culture,” he added.

“This is not an issue of how you pray or where you were born… this is simply evil, plain and simple.”

A. Alfred Taubman dies aged 91

0

Michigan billionaire Adolf Alfred Taubman has died at the age of 91.

A. Alfred Taubman, who donated hundreds of millions of dollars to universities, hospitals and museums, died on April 17 at his home of a heart attack, according to son Robert S. Taubman, president and CEO of Taubman Centers, Inc.

“This company and all that you stand for were among the greatest joys of his life,” Robert S. Taubman wrote in a message to the company’s employees.

“He was so proud of what this wonderful company he founded 65 years ago has accomplished.”

The self-made billionaire’s philanthropy and business success — including weaving the enclosed shopping mall into American culture — was clouded by a criminal conviction late in his career.

A. Alfred Taubman’s business success spanned from real estate and art houses to the hot dog-serving A&W restaurant chain, for which he traveled to Hungary to figure out why the country’s sausage was so good. He also became a major backer of stem-cell research.A Alfred Taubman dead at 91

It was his rearrangement of how people shop — parking lot in front, several stores in one stop close to home — that left a mark on American culture.

Taubman Centers, a subsidiary of his Taubman Co., founded in 1950, currently owns and manages 19 regional shopping centers nationwide.

Born January 31, 1924, in Pontiac, Michigan, to German-Jewish immigrants, Adolf Alfred Taubman worked as a boy at a department store after school near his family’s home, which was among the custom houses and commercial buildings developed in the area by his father.

Recognizing the booming post-war growth of the middle class, particularly in the Motor City, A. Alfred Taubman launched his first real estate development company in 1950. His first project was a freestanding bridal shop in Detroit — but he had his eyes on something bigger. He had noticed shoppers responding to the convenience of “one-stop comparison shopping opportunity,” he wrote in his autobiography.

When a friend suggested a shopping plaza in Flint, A. Alfred Taubman’s company did something radical for the time: stores were pushed to the back of the lot and parking spaces were put up front. It was a success, his young company took on larger-scale developments in Michigan, California and elsewhere in the 1950s and early ’60s.

A. Alfred Taubman served as chairman of Sotheby’s Holdings, Inc., parent company of Sotheby’s art auction house, from 1983 to 2000, and was a partner in international real estate company The Athena Group before he was tangled in a price-fixing scheme.

A. Alfred Taubman was convicted in 2001 of conspiring with Anthony Tennant, former chairman of Christie’s International, to fix the commissions the auction giants charged. Prosecutors alleged sellers were bilked of as much as $400 million in commissions.

Arginine stops dementia in mice brains

0

A new study shows that tweaking the brain’s immune system with an arginine supplement has prevented mice developing dementia.

The team at Duke University, in the US, showed immune cells which start attacking nutrients in the brain may be a trigger for the disease.

The researchers say their findings could open up new avenues of research for a field that has not developed a single drug to slow the progression of the disease.

Experts said the findings offered new hope of a treatment.

The researchers indentified microglia – normally the first line of defense against infection in the brain – as major players in the development of dementia.

They found some microglia changed to become exceptionally adept at breaking down a component of protein, an amino acid called arginine, in the early stages of the disease.Arginine supplements and dementia

As arginine levels plummeted, the immune cells appeared to dampened the immune system in the brain.

In mouse experiments, a chemical was used to block the enzymes that break down arginine.

They showed fewer of the characteristics of dementia such as damaged proteins collecting in the brain and the animals performed better in memory tests.

One of the researchers, Dr. Matthew Kan, said: “All of this suggests to us that if you can block this local process of amino acid deprivation, then you can protect the mouse, at least from Alzheimer’s disease.

“We see this study opening the doors to thinking about Alzheimer’s in a completely different way, to break the stalemate of ideas in Alzheimer’s disease.”

However, the findings do not suggest that arginine supplements could combat dementia as the boosted levels would still be broken down.

Suge Knight case: Video evidence released by Los Angeles court

A video showing Marion “Suge” Knight running over two men with his pick-up truck has been released by a Los Angeles court.

The security-camera footage, captured at a drive-in burger stand in January, is expected to be used at Suge Knight’s trial.

The judge has ruled that the Death Row Records founder will be tried for murder and attempted murder over the incident.

One of the victims was killed and the other seriously injured. Suge Knight denies the charges.

Suge Knight’s legal team says it was an accident as their client was fleeing what he believed was an ambush attempt by the two men and others.

Prosecutors say Suge Knight deliberately ran them over.

The video – which had already been circulating on the internet – was formally reviewed during a preliminary court hearing on April 17.

The footage shows the vehicle pulling up to the burger stand and one of the victims approaching the driver’s side window. A struggle ensues.

Suge Knight’s truck is seen going into reverse, throwing the man to the ground.

It then moves forward, driving over his legs and slams into the other victim, who was killed.

Suge Knight turned himself in to authorities a day after the incident.

If found guilty, Suge Knight could face a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

North Korea threatens US Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert

0

US ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert could face a “bigger mishap” than the knife attack to his face last month if he does not stop insulting North Korea with “laughable” accusations, a North Korean propaganda unit said.

Ambassador Mark Lippert said in a speech on April 15 that if North Korea improves its human rights record and takes steps to end its nuclear program, it will be rewarded with prosperity and better ties with the outside world, including the US.

North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said Mark Lippert’s remarks were proof that Washington was intent on hostility.

“Lippert needs to drop the bad habit of rashly engaging in scheming chatter distorting the truth and instigating war by taking issue with us,” the committee said in a commentary published on April 16 on the Uriminzokkiri propaganda web site.

“Otherwise, next time, he could face a bigger mishap than getting cut in the cheek by a South Korean citizen,” it said.

North Korea frequently rails at the US, South Korea’s biggest ally, accusing it of preparing for imminent invasion.

A US State Department spokesperson said: “We have seen the statement which is unfortunately consistent with the nature of the regime and its rhetoric.”

Mark Lippert was slashed in the face with a fruit knife by a South Korean man with a history of erratic behavior at a breakfast forum in central Seoul that left a gash that required 80 stitches. He also suffered injuries to his arm.

South Korean police charged Mark Lippert’s attacker with attempted murder. He was not charged with any North Korea-related crime after being questioned over his multiple visits.

North Korea previously called the attack “deserved punishment” but denied any role in it.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev trial: Martin Richard’s family against death penalty

0

Martin Richard’s parents have called on federal authorities to drop the death penalty as a possible punishment for bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Martin William Richard, 8, was the youngest victim in the 2013Boston Marathon bombings.

Bill and Denise Richard’s son was one of three people killed in the explosions two years ago.

The Richards said an execution sentence “could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives.”

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted last week.

Martin Richard’s parents made their plea in a front-page piece in the Boston Globe on April 17.

“We are in favor of and would support the Department of Justice in taking the death penalty off the table in exchange for the defendant spending the rest of his life in prison without any possibility of release and waiving all of his rights to appeal,” they wrote.

The Richards were injured in the attack and their daughter, Jane, lost one of her legs in one of the explosions.

“The defendant murdered our 8-year-old son, maimed our 7-year-old daughter, and stole part of our soul. We know that the government has its reasons for seeking the death penalty, but the continued pursuit of that punishment could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives,” they said.

Throughout the piece, the Richards never mention Dzhokhar Tsarnaev by name, electing instead to refer to him as “the defendant”.

“I care deeply about their views and the views of the other victims and survivors,” US Attorney for Boston, Carmen Ortiz, said. She refused to go into specifics.

Families of other victims have expressed support for the death penalty.

The court will begin the penalty phase of the trial on April 21, one day after this year’s Boston Marathon.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri: Saddam Hussein’s right-hand man killed in Iraq

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, who was right-hand man to Iraq’s ex-leader Saddam Hussein, has been killed, Iraqi officials say.

They say the fugitive militant leader died in fighting in Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. His supporters have denied the claim.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, 72, led the Naqshbandi Order insurgent group, a key force behind the recent rise of Islamic State (ISIS).

He was deputy to Saddam Hussein, who was ousted when US-led forces invaded Iraq in 2003 and executed in 2006.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri was regarded as the most high-profile official of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party to successfully evade capture after the invasion, and had a large bounty on his head for years.Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri killed in Iraq

He was the King of Clubs in the famous pack of cards the US issued of wanted members of Saddam Hussein’s regime after its defeat.

There have been reports of Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri’s death or capture before. The now dissolved Baath party denied the latest claim.

However, al-Arabiya TV showed a picture of what it said was Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri’s body.

Salahuddin governor Raed al-Jabouri said he had died during an operation by soldiers and allied Shia militiamen east of Tikrit – a city that was recaptured by the government two weeks ago.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri is believed to have played a key role in masterminding a major offensive by ISIS in 2014.

ISIS seized swathes of territory in eastern Syria and across northern and western Iraq, in an effort to establish an Islamic “caliphate”.

In recent months Iraqi forces – backed by US-led air strikes since August – have recaptured 25% to 30% of the territory initially lost to ISIS.

ISIS still controls large areas in Iraq, including Mosul, the country’s second largest city.

Bathroom Care Tips

0

Cleaning the bathroom is no-one’s favourite job. It’s necessary to keep the area spotless so as to make it hygienic and also as relaxing as possible. Laying in the bath staring at growing mildew spoils one’s quality time so a bathroom needs to be as pristine as possible. The only way to prevent a grimy bathroom is to keep on top of its care. Right from installing your new bathroom (I’d recommend Ideal Standard products) you need to regular clean and maintain the room. Here are some tips for doing this effectively.

Avoid Scouring Powders

Scouring powders may seem to make the cleaning of the bath a lot less effort, however, they are too abrasive. Using such products on a regular basis will harm your bathroom surfaces and make them more difficult to clean in the future. Taking time to give the tub a quick wipe around after each you use it is much more respectful.

bath-cleaning

Keep Shower Curtain Closed

A bunched up shower curtain keeps in water which will soon turn to mould. Open out the curtain after each time you have a shower to let it dry thoroughly.

Make Ventilation a Priority

Mould is the biggest enemy of bathroom maintenance. Keep the area as well ventilated as possible to fight against it. Windows should be open during or immediately after steamy showers. If your bathroom is not well ventilated, invest in a good dehumidifier.

bath-cleaning

Discover Alternatives to Regular Cleaning Products

Household products such as white vinegar and baking soda make for very effective cleaning products. While branded products may seem to make the bathroom cleaning job easier, solutions using these can be equally powerful and work out cheaper.

Stop the Spread of Mildew in Grout

Scrubbing grout with a solution of 10 parts water and 1 part bleach will help fight the onslaught of mildew around your tiled walls. Follow this up with a pH-neutral cleaner to remove the bleach.

Clear Your Pipes

A common problem in bathrooms is the blocking of pipes due to hair and other things. Make it a regular job to pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain plus half a cup of white vinegar. Flush this down with boiling water and this should effectively unclog your pipes. Do this every month or so.

Cleaning Showerheads

Regularly Clean Your Shower Curtain

Even with the best intentions of opening your shower curtain after every use, you will still need to keep on top of cleaning it. Most curtains are washing machine- friendly so stick it in the laundry every couple of months.

Cleaning Showerheads

Showerheads can become clogged from mineral deposits which may affect the pressure. Submerging the showerhead in a plastic bag of undiluted white vinegar should go some way to effectively cleaning it.

Liberland: New country created between Serbia and Croatia

Liberland is the name of a new European country established by Czech national Vit Jedlicka.

The new country on “no man’s land” is located at the border of Serbia and Croatia.

Vit Jedlicka, a member of the conservative Party of Free Citizens in the Czech Republic, is the self-appointed president of Liberland, which he says sits on unclaimed terra nullius territory wedged between Serbia and Croatia.

The 3-square-mile “country”, where taxes are optional and a military is nonexistent, does not “interfere with the territory” of the two states, according to Liberland’s website.

Liberland is located on the west bank of the Danube river between Croatia and Serbia, on land which has been subject to a decades-long border dispute and therefore, according to Vit Jedlicka, a “terra nuillius” or no man’s land, before the institution of his state on April 13.New country Liberland

President Vit Jedlicka is in the process of writing the country’s constitution, which, in keeping with the country’s name, “significantly limits the power of politicians so they could not interfere too much in the freedoms of the Liberland nation”.

Liberland is currently accepting applications for citizenship from applicants who: “Have respect for other people and respect the opinions of others, regardless of their race, ethnicity, orientation, or religion, have respect for private ownership, which is untouchable, do not have communist, nazi or any other extremist past, and were not punished for past criminal offences.”

Prospective citizens must send their application via email, since “in the territory of Liberland there is no physical location for mail delivery yet”.

Dr. Oz should be removed from Columbia University, say prominent physicians

A group of top doctors have demanded Dr. Mehmet Oz removal from his faculty position at Columbia University, citing his “egregious lack of integrity” for promoting what they call “quack treatments”.

“Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine,” said a letter the ten physicians sent to a Columbia dean earlier this week.

They say Dr. Oz is pushing “miracle” weight-loss supplements with no scientific proof that they work.

The New York Ivy League school responded on April 16, issuing a statement to The Associated Press saying only that the school “is committed to the principle of academic freedom and to upholding faculty members’ freedom of expression for statements they make in public discussion”.Dr Oz Columbia University

Led by Dr. Henry Miller of California’s Stanford University, the doctors sent the letter to Lee Goldman, dean of Columbia’s Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine. The nine other doctors from across the country included Dr. Joel Tepper, a cancer researcher from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and Dr. Gilbert Ross of the American Council on Science and Health in New York City.

The doctors wrote that Dr. Oz, for years a world-class Columbia cardiothoracic surgeon, “has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain”.

They said the celebrity TV doctor has “misled and endangered” the public.

Dr. Oz first came to public attention as a frequent television guest of Oprah Winfrey.

For the past five years, he’s been the host of The Dr. Oz Show.

In 2014, Dr. Oz appeared before a Senate panel that accused him of endorsing products that were medically unsound. At the time, Dr. Oz acknowledged that some of the products he advised his viewers to use “don’t have the scientific muster to present as fact”.

As vice chair of Columbia’s surgery department, Dr. Mehmet Oz still occasionally teaches, said Douglas Levy, spokesman for the Columbia University Medical Center.

Germanwings crash: Memorial service held at Cologne Cathedral

Greece debts: Germany warns over finding creditors outside EU and IMF

According to German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble, Greece would struggle to find creditors outside the EU and IMF.

Wolfgang Schauble said Greece would be welcome to try to find investment from Beijing or Moscow, but may have difficulties.

His warning came after fears of a Greek debt default saw its borrowing costs jump 3.5 percentage points to 27%.

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said his government refuses to consider leaving the EU: “Toying with Grexit… is profoundly anti-European.”

Yanis Varoufakis also promised to “compromise, compromise, compromise without being compromised” to satisfy current creditors.

Wolfgang Schauble and Yanis Varoufakis were speaking at talks in Washington.

On April 15, ratings agency S&P downgraded Greece’s credit rating.

Yields also rose on longer-term Greek borrowing, with the 10-year bond yield – the amount investors demand for lending – rising one percentage point to 13%.

Wolfgang Schauble said that the Greek government needs to find creditors.

“The Europeans have said, OK, we are ready to do it [lend money] until 2020… If you find someone else, whether it’s in Beijing, in Moscow, in Washington DC, or in New York who will lend you money, ok, fine, we would be happy. But it’s difficult to find someone who is lending you in this situation amounts [of] €200 billion.”

He added that Greece must focus on increasing its competitiveness and primary surplus.Germany and Greece finance ministers

Wolfgang Schaeuble was speaking after the Greek government’s borrowing costs surged on April 16.

According to the Financial Times, Greece had made an “informal approach” to the International Monetary Fund to have its bailout repayments delayed, but had been rebuffed.

However, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said at the World Bank spring meeting in Washington: “We have never had an advanced economy asking for payment delays.

“Payment delays are analysed as additional financing granted to that country. Additional financing means additional contribution by the international community – some of which are in much direr situations than the country eventually seeking those delays.

“Payment delays had not been granted by the board of the IMF in the last 30 years and it was eventually granted to a couple of developing countries and that delay was not followed by very productive results.

“It’s clearly not a course of action that would actually fit or be recommendable in the current situation.”

Greece owes the IMF some €1 billion ($1.06 billin) in repayments next month.

Many in the markets think the Greek government will struggle to make those payments if it does not agree an economic reform package with European creditors soon.

Failure to agree a plan with creditors will mean that the country will default, a development that could force the government to put limits on money transfers and even lead Greece to leave the euro.

EU spokesman Margaritis Schinas said on April 16 that the EU was “not satisfied with the level of progress made so far” in debt negotiations.

Wolfgang Schauble had warned that he did not expect an agreement between Athens and its creditors in the next week.

However, Greek PM Alexis Tsipras on April 16 said he was “firmly optimistic” the Greek government could reach a deal with its creditors.

“Despite the cacophony and erratic leaks and statements in recent days from the other side, I remain firmly optimistic that there will be an agreement by the end of the month,” Alexis Tsipras said.

According to Alexis Tsipras, several points of agreement had been found since talks first started, including on areas such as tax collection, corruption and initiatives to distribute the tax burden on those who have the ability to pay.

HEe said the two sides still disagreed on four areas: labor issues, pension reform, an increase in value-added taxes and privatizations, which he referred to as “development of state property”.

In a later tweet, Alexis Tsipras said he was “certain that Europe will choose the path to democracy”.

Barbie sales fall 14% in Q1 2015

0

Barbie maker, Mattel, saw its sales drop for a sixth consecutive quarter as the appeal of its iconic doll continued to wane.

Net sales fell by 2.5% in Q1 2015 from a year ago, while global sales of Barbie fell 14% in the same period.

The toymaker’s net loss also widened more than four-fold to $58.2 million.

Fifty-six year old Barbie has been facing stiff competition from a range of new toys and gadgets.Barbie sales

Electronic toys, tablets and merchandise from popular films such as Disney’s Frozen, along with competition from rivals Hasbro and Denmark’s Lego have all led to sliding sales of the doll.

Barbie accounts for a quarter of Mattel’s sales.

In an attempt to revive Barbie’s lagging popularity, Mattel had fired chief executive Bryan Stockton in January and replaced him with board member Christopher Sinclair.

“We’re starting to see progress with our core brands like Barbie and Fisher-Price, and I am confident we are making the changes necessary to perform better in the future,” Christopher Sinclair said in a statement on April 16.

Mattel’s New York listed shares were up 6.5% in after-hours trading after its sales decline was not as bad as analysts had feared.

WikiLeaks releases Sony attack documents and emails

Hundreds of thousands of emails and documents from a cyber-attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014 have been now published by WikiLeaks.

The archive apparently includes Sony conversations with Downing Street and with Hollywood figures.

In November, Sony suffered a cyber-attack weeks before releasing The Interview, a movie criticized by North Korea.

Sony said it “strongly condemns” the WikiLeaks release.

“We vehemently disagree with WikiLeaks’ assertion that this material belongs in the public domain,” Sony said in a statement.WikiLeaks Sony attack documents

The WikiLeaks dump includes more than 170,000 emails and over 20,000 documents.

After November’s hack, an unknown organization published the documents online, but it was not in an easily-searchable form.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange justified the publication by saying the documents show the inner functioning of a multinational company and are “at the centre of a geo-political conflict”.

The attack came just weeks before Sony was set to release The Interview about a fictional American plot to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

North Korea denied involvement in the attack but praised it as a “righteous deed”.

In December 2014, a group calling itself the “Guardians of Peace” threatened 9/11-type attacks on theaters showing the movie, spurring Sony to cancel the movie’s release.

Days later, amidst growing public pressure to show the movie, Sony bosses appeared to change their minds and said they would give it a limited Christmas Day release.

In January 2015, the US imposed new sanctions on North Korea in response to the attack. And, in April, President Barack Obama ordered the creation of a program that would allow the US government to sanction foreign hackers.

A new trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens gives fans a first glimpse of Han Solo and Chewbacca.

Harrison Ford, who plays space smuggler Han Solo, last appeared in a Star Wars movie more than 30 years ago when Return of the Jedi was released in 1983.

The footage from Episode VII was included in a trailer shown at an official fan convention in California.

The Force Awakens is set for release on December 18 and is the first in a new series of the sci-fi franchise.

The event was also streamed live on the internet.

Harrison Ford, 72, is still recovering after crashing his plane onto a golf course and was unable to attend the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.

Mark Hamill paid tribute to the franchise’s supporters.

“Over the years, all my entire life, I’ve felt such love from you,” he told the thousands in the audience.

“You’re more than just fans. You’re family.”

Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were joined by other cast members, including Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

The relatively unknown Daisy Ridley, speaking for the first time about her role in Star Wars as a scavenger called Rey, described her as “very solitary until she meets another character and an adventure begins”.

She added: “[I] cannot wait to show you guys what we’ve done.”

John Boyega said he was excited but also nervous.

“I was scared to tell my parents that I’d got the part of Finn”, he admitted.

He added he had only told them once the official casting announcement had been made.

Director JJ Abrams was also on the special panel which launched the four-day Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.

The festival begins on May 13 and ends on May 24 with a jury chaired by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux announced the lineup in Paris on April 16, simultaneously launching a campaign to stem the tide of “selfies” on the red carpet.

“We don’t want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps,” said Thierry Fremaux.

“We think it’s ridiculous and grotesque and really slows things down.”

“You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie,” he added.Cannes Film Festival 2015

Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine are among those with films competing at this year’s festival.

The lineup sees many returning auteurs including new films from Gus Van Sant, Nanni Moretti and Jacques Audiard.

Films from Woody Allen and new Pixar animation Inside Out will play out of competition, alongside Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary.

Today’s press conference follows earlier announcements regarding the opening film – La Tete Haute (Standing Tall), by French actress-director Emmanuelle Bercot – and the worldwide premiere of Fury Road, the latest chapter in the revived Mad Max franchise.

Seventeen films were unveiled in competition and 14 in Un Certain Regard, although Thierry Fremaux noted there would be more films added to the lineup in the coming days.

Cate Blanchett will star alongside Rooney Mara in Carol, based on a novel by The Talented Mr. Ripley author Patricia Highsmith. The 1950s New York-set drama is directed by Todd Haynes of Far From Heaven fame.

In Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees, Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe play two men who meet by chance in Japan’s Suicide Forest, where both have gone to end their lives; Naomi Watts also stars.

Screening out of competition, Woody Allen’s 45th film, Irrational Man, sees Joaquin Phoenix star as a college professor who starts a relationship with one of his students (Emma Stone).

In 2014, the Palme d’Or was won by Winter Sleep, from Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
