Some of the Most Popular and Common Types of Pipe Tobacco

0

Smoking pipe tobacco is said to be a dying art. This is a terrible shame, because the history of this type of tobacco is as old as time itself. Additionally, the scent of a good quality tobacco gives a truly homely, warming and welcoming feel to any room. Luckily, some people still continue to smoke pipe tobacco, and there is a lot of information out there about the different types of tobacco that can be used. Let’s take a look at some of these.

Burley

Burley is generally considered to be a tobacco used for cigarettes. This is because it is slow burning, low in sugar and high in nicotine. However, this does not mean it is not suitable for pipes. Generally, however, it is used as a blend, to give other tobaccos a different aroma or texture. Some 70% of all burley is produced in Kentucky, with a further 20% being produced in Tennessee. The remaining 10% is produced in various other states. Brazil is also a major producing country. Burley is an interesting tobacco, as it can actually hide within the blend itself. It is known as the chameleon of tobacco plants. In a bland, it gives a heavier mouth feel and increased body. However, it is important to only choose a high quality burley.

Cavendish

A lot of people talk about Cavendish as if it is a tobacco plant. This is incorrect. Indeed, it refers to the method of processing and cutting the tobacco itself. The methods used are designed to bring the sweet natural taste of tobacco out and they can be used on all tobaccos and tobacco blends. It is also often used in cigars.

First, leaves are pressed together, after which they are exposed to heat from steam or a fire. Then, the tobacco is left to ferment, creating a mild and sweet tobacco. Once dried and fermented, it is sliced. Each slice is then broken apart by hand rubbing it in a circular motion. In many cases, extra flavors are added at the pressing stage.

Cavendish comes in various colors, with Black Cavendish being the best known one. Additionally, it is very easy to add flavors to it, which is why it can be smoked in flavors such as chocolate, cherry, rum, coconut, vanilla, strawberry, bourbon and walnut.

Dark Fired Kentucky

A number of different blends feature Dark Fired Kentucky. It is a very dark type of tobacco that is not unlike Burley. It is first cured in a barn, using an open fire, not unlike Latakia. This process gives it a smoky feel, but not as woodsy as Latakia. Instead, it has an earthy flavor to it. It burns very well, has a high nicotine content and has a really good body.

These are just some of the commonly found pipe tobaccos and there are many more. It is important to research the different options if you want to start smoking pipes. This is true not in the least because you will have to spend some time getting used to it.

Asian Boat Crisis: Myanmar Rescues First Migrant Boats

Two migrant boats holding more than 200 people have been rescued in Myanmar’s waters near the border with Bangladesh.

It was the first such rescue by Myanmar which has faced strong criticism for not doing enough to aid those stranded at sea and stem the migrant crisis.

Most are Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar, while others are economic migrants from Bangladesh.

More than 3,000 migrants have landed in neighboring Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, which have offered aid.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, said the migrants were rescued on May 22.Myanmar migrant boat rescue 2015

Photos posted on the information ministry’s Facebook page showed scores of bare-chested men crammed in the hull of at least one boat.

The posts referred to the migrants as “Bengalis” – Myanmar’s term for Rohingya Muslims – and said the boats were in Bangladeshi waters off Myanmar’s Rakhine state, waiting for more to arrive in smaller vessels.

The government has promised humanitarian assistance to those who have suffered at sea, but ministers have stressed that only verified Myanmar citizens will be allowed to stay.

The rescue came after Myanmar officials met Malaysian and Indonesian foreign ministers, and the US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on May 21 to discuss the situation.

Malaysia also began searching for migrant boats on May 22, a day after PM Najib Razak announced that they would conduct rescue missions.

Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to stop towing boats out to sea and will provide temporary shelter to those who have landed. Thailand only said it would stop rejecting boats.

India: Jayaram Jayalalitha Set to Return as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Former Indian actress Jayaram Jayalalitha is set to return as the chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu after the state governor invited her to form a new ministry.

Jayaram Jayalalitha’s conviction in a corruption scandal in 2014 had cut short her fourth term as the chief minister, but earlier this month, an appeals court cleared her.

Her replacement O Panneerselvam quit on May 22, paving the way for her return.

Jayaram Jayalalitha is one of India’s most colorful politicians and she has been a leading figure in south Indian politics for three decades.Jayaram Jayalalitha to return as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

She was convicted and sentenced for four years by a trial court last September.

Jayaram Jayalalitha was found guilty of amassing unaccounted-for wealth of more than $10 million and had to quit as the chief minister.

The appeals court ruling earlier this month paved the way for her returning as the head of Tamil Nadu government.

On May 22, Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah’s office said in a statement that O Panneerselvam, party leader and loyalist who was heading the government in her absence, resigned along with his cabinet ministers.

The governor accepted the resignations and invited Jayaram Jayalalitha to form a government “at the earliest”, the statement added.

Earlier, legislators belonging to her regional AIADMK party met and elected Jayaram Jayalalitha as the leader of the legislature party.

According to local reports, Jayram Jayalalitha will make her first public appearance later during the day, and then form her government.

Ireland, Iceland, Malta, Portugal, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and San Marino have been knocked out of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in the second semi-final on May 21.

Ireland is the most successful country in Eurovision history, with a total of seven wins.

Last night, Ireland couldn’t muster enough votes for their youngest ever entrant, 17-year-old Molly Sterling

Sweden, the bookmakers’ favorite, sailed through to Saturday’s grand final in Vienna.Eurovision 2015 Ireland act Molly Sterling

Its act, Mans Zelmerlow, joins automatic qualifiers Austria, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and special guests Australia.

Despite Ireland’s historical success at Eurovision, it has struggled in the 21st Century.

It has taken last place twice, in 2007 and 2013, and failed to progress beyond the semi-finals five times since they were introduced in 2004.

However, Ireland has fared better than the Czech Republic, which has never made it to the grand final.

Israel, Azerbaijan, Montenegro, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Cyprus, Slovenia, Norway and Sweden are the 10 acts qualified to the final from Thursday’s semi-final.

South Korea Nut Rage Incident: Heather Cho Freed After Winning Appeal

0

Korean Air’s former head of in-flight service Heather Cho, who was jailed for an outburst over macadamia nuts, has been freed after winning a court appeal.

Heather Cho was jailed for a year in February but the court on May 22 ruled she should serve a suspended sentence.

The daughter of Korean Air’s chairman was convicted of violating plane safety after ordering a taxiing plane back to the gate to offload a steward who had served the nuts the wrong way.South Korea nut rage Heather Cho

However, the appeal court ruled Heather Cho, also known as Cho Hyun-ah, did not cause a change in the flight path.

The court gave Heather Cho a reduced sentence of 10 months and suspended the prison term for two years.

She remains guilty of using violence against flight attendants.

On December 5 last year, Heather Cho became angry while onboard a Korean Air flight in New York after she was served macadamia nuts which she did not ask for, and which were still in a bag, not in a bowl.

She confronted both the flight attendant who served her and chief steward Park Chang-jin about the presentation, at one point jabbing Park with a service manual.

Heather Cho then ordered the plane, which was taxiing at JFK Airport, to return to the terminal to offload Park Chang-jin.

She had been in custody since she was arrested on December 30. In February she was convicted and sentenced to one year in jail.

One of the judges on the appeal panel said on May 22 that they had taken into consideration that she was a first time offender.

“It appears that she will have to live under heavy criticism from society, and stigma,” he said.

The case attracted intense attention in South Korea, reopening a national debate about the Korean business system, which is dominated by family companies known as chaebols.

Freddie Gray Case: Baltimore Police Officers Indicted by Grand Jury

0

Six Baltimore police officers accused in the death of Freddie Gray have been all indicted by a grand jury.

On May 21, State Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby announced the revised charges, but the most serious charges – including second-degree murder – remained.

Freddie Gray suffered a severe spinal cord injury in police custody in April and died a week later.

The black man’s death sparked weeks of protests and later riots and looting in Baltimore.

Marilyn Mosby said: “As is often the case, during an ongoing investigation, charges can and should be revised based upon the evidence.”

The grand jury did not return charges on the false imprisonment charges that were brought against some of the officers.

Marilyn Mosby brought the false imprisonment charges earlier claiming that Freddie Gray’s arrest was unjustified and illegal.Baltimore police officers indicted

However, the grand jury did return new reckless endangerment charges that were not part of the original charges announced three weeks ago.

Marilyn Mosby has said that Freddie Gray’s neck was broken while he was being handcuffed and placed into a police van. She also said that police repeatedly ignored his pleas for medical attention.

The officers are scheduled to appear in court on July 2.

A lawyer for the six Baltimore police officers said they “did nothing wrong”, after criminal charges were announced by Marilyn Mosby earlier this month.

Lawyer Michael Davey said the officers “at all times acted reasonably and in accordance with their training” and accused Marilyn Mosby of an “egregious rush to judgement”.

He also said that the defense team had “grave concerns about the fairness and integrity of the prosecution of our officers”.

Marilyn Mosby rejected a police union request to step aside and appoint a special prosecutor to handle the case.

The grand jury’s decision to bring charges largely similar to Marilyn Mosby’s may quiet calls for her to step aside.

Freddie Gray’s death is the latest in a string of high-profile cases in the US where unarmed black men have died after contact with the police.

After Freddie Gray’s funeral, riots broke out in sections of West Baltimore, prompting city and state officials to deploy thousands of extra law enforcement officers and National Guard troops to keep the peace and enact a citywide curfew.

Baltimore police officers charges:

  • Officer Caesar Goodson: 2nd-degree depraved heart murder, involuntary manslaughter, 2nd degree negligent assault, manslaughter by vehicle by means of gross negligence, manslaughter by vehicle by means of criminal negligence, misconduct in office for failure to secure prisoner and failure to render aid, reckless endangerment
  • Officer William Porter: Involuntary manslaughter, assault in the 2nd degree, misconduct in office, reckless endangerment
  • Lieutenant Brian Rice: Involuntary manslaughter, assault in the 2nd degree, assault in the 2nd degree [second of two similar charges], misconduct in office, reckless endangerment
  • Officer Edward Nero: Assault in the 2nd degree (intentional), assault in the 2nd degree (negligent), misconduct in office, reckless endangerment
  • Sergeant Alicia White: Involuntary manslaughter, 2nd degree assault, misconduct in office, reckless endangerment
  • Officer Garrett Miller: Intentional Assault in the 2nd degree, assault in the 2nd degree, negligent misconduct in office, reckless endangerment

David Letterman Final Show: Four Presidents and Celebrities Pay Tribute to Veteran Showman

Celebrities and four US presidents paid tribute to David Letterman last night on his final late night talk show.

David Letterman’s final day as host of the late-night TV talk show has been a major media pile-on.

Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Jerry Seinfeld and Foo Fighters were among stars paying tribute to the veteran talk show host.

David Letterman, 68, has bowed out after 33 years and 6,028 late-night broadcasts.

He joked that physicist Stephen Hawking had calculated it “works out to about eight minutes of laughter”.David Letterman final show May 2015

David Letterman gave emotional thanks to his family, crew and viewers, saying: “There’s nothing I can ever do to repay you.”

He began his late-night career on NBC in 1982, before moving to CBS’s Late Show in 1993.

David Letterman’s final broadcast began with pre-recorded clips of former US presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton echoing fellow ex-president Gerald Ford’s post-Watergate remark that “our long national nightmare is over”.

President Barack Obama then appeared to repeat that statement before adding: “Letterman is retiring.”

On April 10, 2014, one week after David Letterman announced that he would retire as host of the Late Show, CBS announced that Stephen Colbert (host of competing late night series The Colbert Report on Comedy Central) would succeed Letterman as the host of the program.

Title Loans in California Can Help You to Rebuild Credit

0

If you have failed to pay your bills on time, got your credit cards maxed out or had any other payment difficulties, you may now have a poor credit score. This means that you will struggle to get any type of credit until that score has improved. Luckily, there are a few things you can do in order to improve that again.

Understanding a Low FICO Score

There are many reasons why you could have a low credit score. While financial institutions would like to make you feel as if you are a bad person, the reality is that it happens to most people because there was no other way for them to make ends meet. Unfortunately, lenders no longer see customers as people, but rather as numbers. If your number is not high enough, it seems that there is very little you can do.

Car Title Loans

One option you do have available to you is to apply for title loans in California. This is a secured and short term loan option that is paid out to you very quickly, generally within as little as 24 hours. This means you have the opportunity to meet an unexpected financial obligation and thereby not damaging your credit report any further, as well as being able to rebuild your credit rating somewhat.

How to Rebuild Your Credit Score

There are a number of things you can do to rebuild your credit score. These include:

  • View your credit reports with TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Check whether the entries on there are entries you recognize. If you believe them to be in error, you need to contact both the credit bureau and the creditor and try to have it rectified.
  • Pay your credit card debts off. If you have a maxed out credit card, you should try to do a balance transfer or take other actions to lower the amount you owe.
  • Do not apply for more loans. The reason for this is that a lender will run a credit check on your file, and this will be left as a trace for as much as three months. Hence, avoid applying for any type of loan that takes your credit score into consideration.
  • Stick to your repayments. If you have any outstanding loans, credit cards or other financial products, make sure you make all payments on time. Additionally, this is where you could consider applying for a title loan and using that to show positive financial behavior.

If you decide to take out a car title loan, make sure that you have a plan in place to repay it and stick to it. This will boost your low credit score. After some time of doing this, you may be able to qualify for better financial products once again. Having a low credit score does not mean there are no options out there for you if you are facing a financial emergency. Since your vehicle will be put up as collateral, they are more forgiving of past behavior.

CERN LHC Sets New Energy Record as Protons Collide at 13 TeV

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) set a new record by smashing atoms with vastly more energy than ever before.

The LHC is the world’s largest and most powerful particle collider, and the largest single machine in the world.

During its latest trials on Wednesday night, two opposing beams of protons were steered into each other at the four collision points spaced around the LHC’s tunnel.

The energy of the collisions was 13 trillion electronvolts – dwarfing the 8 trillion reached during the LHC’s first run, which ended in early 2013.CERN LHC 2015

For now, however, the collisions are part of the gradual testing process designed to ensure nothing is missed an nothing goes awry when the LHC goes into that full “collision factory” mode.

“We begin by bringing the beams into collision at 13 TeV (teraelectronvolts), and adjusting their orbits to collide them head-on,” said Ronaldus Suykerbuyk from the operations team at CERN – the organization based near Geneva in Switzerland that runs the LHC.

The huge collider has been through a planned two-year refit, after the conclusion of its first run – which in 2012 produced the first solid evidence for the famous Higgs boson.

Physicists are excited to see the machine winding back up again, although it is an overwhelmingly incremental process.

In early April, after a slight delay, twin proton beams circulated the LHC’s 27km ring, 30 storeys below the Swiss-French border, for the first time in two years. This was at a much lower, preliminary energy; five days later the energy reached 6.5 TeV per beam for the first time.

The first collisions followed in early May – again, at a lower, safer energy to begin with. Thursday’s collisions are in new territory.

World’s Oldest Stone Tools Discovered in Kenya

The world’s oldest stone tools were unearthed from the shores of Lake Turkana in Kenya, scientists say.

The tools date to 3.3 million years ago.

They are 700,000 years older than any tools found before, even pre-dating the earliest humans in the Homo genus.

The find, reported in Nature, suggests that more ancient species, such as Australopithecus afarensis or Kenyanthropus platyops, may have been more sophisticated than was thought.

“They are significantly earlier than anything that has been found previously,” said Dr. Nick Taylor, from the National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS) in France and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.

“It’s really quite astonishing to think what separates the previous oldest site and this site is 700,000 years of time. It’s monumental.”Oldest stone tools Kenya

The first tools from the site, which is called Lomekwi 3, were discovered in 2011. They were spotted after researchers took a wrong turn as they walked through the hot, dry Kenyan landscape.

By the end of 2012, a total of 149 tools had been found, and another field trip in 2014 has unearthed more still.

They include sharp flakes of stone, sheared off from larger rocks, which were most likely used for cutting.

Hammers and anvils were also excavated, some of which were huge in size.

Dating of the volcanic ash and minerals around the tools suggests that they are 3.3 million years old.

Until this discovery, the oldest examples of this technology were the Oldowan tools from Tanzania, which date to about 2.6 million years ago.

The researchers say the 700,000-year time difference reveals how manufacturing methods and use changed over time, growing more advanced.

The scientists do not know who made the tools discovered in Kenya.

Until now, some thought that Homo habilis – known as “handy man” – was the earliest of our ancestors in the Homo genus to use tools.

But with Homo fossils dating back to only 2.4-2.3 million years ago, it now seems unlikely that this was the first toolmaker.

Other finds, such as animal bones found in Ethiopia with cut marks that date to 3.39 million years ago, also suggest tool use began before Homo habilis.

Scientists now believe the 3.3-million-year-old implements were crafted by another, more primitive species.

Dr. Nick Taylor said: “There are a number of possible candidates at present.

“There was a hominin called Kenyanthropus platyops, which has been found very close to where the Lomekwi 3 tools are being excavated. And that hominin was around at the time the tools were being made.

“More widely in the East African region there is another hominin, Australopithecus afarensis, which is famously known from the fossil Lucy, which is another candidate.”

Neither of these species was assumed to be particularly intelligent – they had both human and ape-like features, with relatively small brains.

However the tools suggest they may have been smarter than assumed.

Salman Khan Confirms Appearance at Dubai’s Arab Indo Bollywood Awards

Salman Khan has confirmed his appearance at the Arab Indo Bollywood Awards (AIBA) in Dubai despite awaiting court permission to travel, the show organizer says.

The 49-year-old Bollywood star was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in jail for killing a homeless man in a hit-and-run case but was bailed pending an appeal.

Salman Khan has sought leave from the High Court of Bombay to travel to Dubai on May 29, the Press Trust of India reported.

The Arab Indo Bollywood Awards said Salman Khan confirmed his attendance last week. He is down to star in the finale.

Salman Khan is one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood with a huge fan base. He has appeared in more than 80 Hindi-language films.

The decision to suspend his sentence was welcomed by his fans but others argued that most do not have the benefit of having cases expedited in the same way.

Salman Khan was convicted of culpable homicide on May 6 and sentenced to five years.

A man was killed and four others injured in 2002 when Salman Khan ran them over as they slept on a pavement in Mumbai.

On May 8, the High Court granted Salman Khan bail and suspended his sentence pending the hearing and disposal of his appeal against the conviction.

However, the PTI reports the high court had said Salman Khan would need to seek the court’s permission to leave India.

Al Bustan Group which is organising the Arab Indo Bollywood Awards – being held for the first time – said Salman Khan confirmed he would attend last week and “there is no legal problem for him to travel abroad”.

Salman Khan would arrive in Dubai on May 28 and perform two dances. The actor is listed on the event website as being in the finale act.

Salman Khan’s application was filed on Wednesday, said PTI, and it is likely to be heard next week.

The Doctors had provided Alana Thompson with a brand new bicycle and chef-prepared meals for a six-week period as well as new kitchen appliances for Mama June.

Honey Boo Boo and her mother returned to The Doctors on May 20, for the third and final check up.
Dr. Travis Stork confronted Mama June and said: “We sent you all these kitchen tools to help you cook and they’re still in the boxes, haven’t even been opened.”

He also accused Honey Boo Boo of saying one thing for the cameras, “but doing another”.

Meanwhile, mother-of-four June Shannon is planning to undergo lap-band surgery this summer, TMZ reported.

Walking Horses: Adolf Hitler’s Lost Bronze Horses Found in Germany

Walking Horses by Josef Thorak – two bronze horse statues that once stood in front of Adolf Hitler’s chancellery – are among several pieces of Nazi-era art found by German police.

The pieces have been recovered after police staged a series of raids as part of a probe into black market art.Adolf Hitler bronze horses by Josef Thorak

Eight people are being investigated, police say.

The statues were custom-made for the Berlin building, which was badly damaged in World War Two and later destroyed by Soviet forces.

Also discovered was a huge granite relief by Arno Breker, featuring muscled, shirtless fighters in what police called a “typical Nazi style”.

Walking Horses were last seen at a Soviet barracks near Berlin in 1989, shortly before the fall of the Berlin wall.

Until their disappearance, the statues had been painted gold, damaged by bullets, and played on by children, Bild reported.

McDonald’s Protests: Fight for 15 March Shuts down Oak Brook HQ

0

Over 1,500 McDonald’s employees and supporters protested at the company’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, on May 20, a day before the annual shareholder meeting.

They are demanding a $15 minimum wage for fast-food workers.

Larger protests are planned for May 21, before the company’s annual shareholder meeting.

McDonald’s has been under pressure from workers to raise wages, just as investors have become increasingly unhappy with the company’s slumping sales.

In the same time, customers in the company’s biggest market – the US, which is responsible for 40% of its operating income – have been increasingly foregoing McDonald’s and other fast-food restaurants in favor of so-called “fast casual” chains like Shake Shack and Chipotle.

That has caused McDonald’s share price to sink – and let to grumbling amongst shareholders.

McDonald’s has banned media from attending the management meeting on May 21.

Photo Reuters
Photo Reuters

Earlier in May, CEO Steve Easterbrook – who took over the company in January – unveiled plans to turn around the company after it reported yet another quarter of disappointing results.

McDonald’s has been under pressure for over two years by the Fast for 15 campaign, a group of workers, backed by traditional labor unions. They have called on McDonald’s and others to raise the base amount it pays workers to a so-called “living wage” of $15 per hour.

The current US federal minimum wage is $7.25, but some states and cities – most notably, Los Angeles – have higher minimums.

Outside McDonald’s headquarters in Oak Brook, protesters carried banners and balloons, and chanted slogans.

However, McDonald’s has already said it plans to raise the wage it pays workers to above $9 per hour – and several other companies, including Wal-Mart and Target, have said they will increase their hourly minimums in the wake of the protests.

Part of the move, experts say, is that as the US economy recovers, large companies have to increase their base wages to keep workers.

But the companies also face mandatory wage increases in the several states and US cities that have voted to raise the local minimum wages since 2014.

On May 19, Los Angeles became the largest US city to boost wages, voting to increase the minimum wage in the city to $15 per hour by 2020. Experts say that amounts a $2.4 billion wage increase to over 500,000 workers in the city.

Sam Smith Undergoes Vocal Cord Surgery at Boston Hospital

Sam Smith underwent vocal cord surgery at a hospital in Boston last week.

The singer is expected to make a full recovery, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston said in a statement.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Steven Zeitels, who has carried out the same procedure on Adele, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Lionel Richie.

According to the hospital, Sam Smith’s condition was the result of unstable blood vessels in his vocal cord.

They can rupture and stop people singing.

Sam Smith’s song Stay With Me won Grammys for song and record of the year and he also was named best new artist in February.

The singer was forced to cancel a series of shows after finding out he needed vocal cord surgery.

Sam Smith’s next live show is scheduled for July 3rd at Thetford Forest in Suffolk, the UK.

California Oil Spill: Gov. Jerry Brown Declares State of Emergency

Governor Jerry Brown has declared state of emergency in southern California after a pipeline leaked tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil near Santa Barbara.

Officials said the pipeline was running at full-capacity when it broke on May 20.

While it has now been switched off, it is unclear how long the clean up will take.

Earlier estimates said a single slick had formed, stretching only four miles.

Emergency workers have been fanning out across Refugio State Beach to remove oil that is stuck to sand and rocks.

It is estimated about 21,000 gallons of oil have reached the ocean.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared the state of emergency on May 21 to help the state “quickly mobilize all available resources”.

“We will do everything necessary to protect California’s coastline,” Jerry Brown said.California oil spill 2015

Darren Palmer, an official with Plains All American Pipeline LP, who owns the pipe, said it was running at a rate of about 84,000 gallons an hour when it broke.

The pipe was built in 1991 and had been tested a few weeks ago, he said.

Darren Palmer said the company takes responsibility for the spill and will pay for the cleanup.

Environmentalists are concerned that the oil may harm wildlife including birds and whales.

The alarm was first raised on May 20 when authorities received reports of a foul smell near Refugio State Beach around midday.

Emergency responders found a half-mile slick in the ocean, Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said.

They traced the oil to a ruptured onshore pipeline that was spewing oil into a rain water drain which ran to the ocean. The pipeline was shut off about three hours later.

The area has been closed to recreational and fishing activities. It is not clear if the area will be open for the coming Memorial Day weekend.

ISIS Takes Control of Palmyra

According to new reports, ISIS has taken near complete control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.

Palmyra is home to some of the world’s most magnificent ruins.

There are fears that the Islamic State militants will destroy the ruins, which UNESCO has designated a World Heritage site.

Syria has admitted it has pulled government troops out of Palmyra following the ISIS advance.

ISIS militants have demolished several ancient sites that pre-date Islam in Iraq, including Hatra and Nimrud.

Syrian state media said pro-government forces had been pulled out of Tadmur, the modern settlement on Palmyra, after “assuring the evacuation” of most of its inhabitants.

Hundreds of Palmyra’s statues have been moved to safety but large monuments from the ancient parts of the city could not be moved.

Rising out of the desert, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world, according to UNESCO.

The site, most of which dates back to the 1st and 2nd Century when the region was under Roman rule, is dominated by a grand, colonnaded street.

UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova said she was “deeply concerned” by the situation.

“The fighting is putting at risk one of the most significant sites in the Middle East, and its civilian population,” Irina Bokova said in a statement.

Palmyra is situated in a strategically important area on the road between the capital, Damascus, and the contested eastern city of Deir al-Zour, and is close to gas fields.

A United States-led coalition has carried out air strikes on the jihadist group’s positions since September 2014. However, it says it does not co-ordinate its actions with the Syrian government.

Meanwhile, the US said it was sending 1,000 anti-tank missiles to the Iraqi government following the fall of Ramadi to ISIS.

Osama bin Laden Raid Documents Released by US Intelligence

0

New documents that were found at Osama bin Laden’s secret compound in Pakistan during the 2011 raid have been released by the US intelligence officials.

Osama bin Laden was killed during the 2011 operation. During the same operation the US special forces recovered the documents that officials have branded Bin Laden’s Bookshelf.

As well as Arabic correspondence, there are English language books by Bob Woodward and Noam Chomsky, and others on economic and military theory.

More documents may yet be released.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said a “rigorous” review had taken place before the documents were released.

The documents – 103 papers and videos in all – include a number of translated letters, notes, and other material detailing al-Qaeda operations. Many of the documents also have a version available in Arabic.

In one of the letters, the al-Qaeda chief instructs one of his deputies to tell “our brothers” that they must remained focused on fighting Americans.

Their “job is to uproot the obnoxious tree by concentrating on its American trunk, and to avoid being occupied with the local security forces,” Osama bin-Laden writes.

Another letter mocks President George W. Bush’s War on Terror, with Osama bin Laden writing that it had not created stability in Iraq or Afghanistan. No date is included on the translation provided on the US government website.Osama bin Laden documents released 2015

There is also section entitled Materials Regarding France, which includes a number of academic reports and articles about the France’s military, politics and economy.

Also included is a document described as a “suicide prevention guide”, several English language books including Bob Woodward’s Obama’s Wars, several maps, and a few video game guides.

The documents are being released in the wake of President Barack Obama’s calls for greater transparency, said Jeffrey Anchukaitis, a spokesman for the ODNI.

“The Intelligence Community will be reviewing hundreds more documents in the near future for possible declassification and release,” Jeffrey Anchukaitis said.

Some of the material that has been included in the trove was previously declassified for use in federal prosecutions.

In 2012, some documents recovered in the raid were released by the research wing of the US military academy, West Point.

Five Global Banks Fined $5.7 Billion over Currency Rigging

0

JPMorgan, UBS, Barclays, Citigroup and RBS have been fined $5.7 billion in the US for charges including manipulating the foreign exchange market.

Four of them – JPMorgan, Barclays, Citigroup and RBS – have agreed to plead guilty to US criminal charges.

UBS will plead guilty to rigging benchmark interest rates.

Barclays was fined the most, $2.4 billion, as it did not join other banks in November to settle investigations by UK, US and Swiss regulators.

The bank is also sacking eight employees involved in the scheme.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that “almost every day” for five years from 2007, currency traders used a private electronic chat room to manipulate exchange rates.

Their actions harmed “countless consumers, investors and institutions around the world”, Loretta Lynch said.Five banks fined over forex rigging

Separately, the Federal Reserve fined a sixth bank, Bank of America, $205 million over foreign exchange-rigging. All the other banks were fined by both the Department of Justice and the Federal Reserve.

Regulators said that between 2008 and 2012, several traders formed a cartel and used chat rooms to manipulate prices in their favor.

One Barclays trader, who was invited to join the cartel, was told: “Mess up and sleep with one eye open at night.”

Several strategies were used to manipulate prices and a common scheme was to influence prices around the daily fixing of currency levels.

A daily exchange rate fix is held to help businesses and investors value their multi-currency assets and liabilities.

Until February, this happened every day in the 30 seconds before and after 16:00 in London and the result is known as the 4pm fix, or just the fix.

In a scheme known as “building ammo”, a single trader would amass a large position in a currency and, just before or during the fix, would exit that position.

Other members of the cartel would be aware of the plan and would be able to profit.

The fines break a number of records. The criminal fines of more than $2.5 billion are the largest set of anti-trust fines obtained by the Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, the $925 million fine imposed on Citigroup by the Department of Justice was the biggest penalty for breaking the Sherman Act, which covers competition law.

The guilty pleas from the banks are seen as highly significant as banks have settled previous investigations without an admission of guilt.

The Attorney General warned that further wrongdoing would taken extremely seriously: “The Department of Justice will not hesitate to file criminal charges for financial institutions that reoffend.

“Banks that cannot or will not clean up their act need to understand – it will be enforced.”

Syria: ISIS Captures a Third of Tadmur, next to Ancient City of Palmyra

A third of Syrian town Tadmur, next to Palmyra, one of the Middle East’s greatest archaeological sites, has been captured by ISIS.

The Islamic State militants had overrun much of the north of Tadmur after fierce clashes with government forces, activists say.

Syria’s head of antiquities Maamoun Abdul Karim said the world had a responsibility to save Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hundreds of statues had been moved to safety, but large monuments could not be moved, Maamoun Abdul Karim warned.Palmyra ISIS

ISIS militants have ransacked and demolished several ancient sites that pre-date Islam in Iraq, including Hatra and Nimrud, leading to fears that it might attempt to damage or destroy Palmyra.

On May 20, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a third of Tadmur had been taken by ISIS after battles with government soldiers and allied militiamen.

Rising out of the desert and flanked by an oasis, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world, according to UNESCO.

The site, most of which dates back to the 1st to the 2nd Century when the region was under Roman rule, is dominated by a grand, colonnaded street.

Palmyra and Tadmur are situated in a strategically important area on the road between the capital, Damascus and the contested eastern city of Deir al-Zour, and close to gas fields.

North Korea Creates Miniaturized Nuclear Warheads

North Korea claims it made progress on nuclear miniaturization by creating warheads small enough to fit on a missile.

A North Korean defense official said in a statement on May 20 that its nuclear program had “long been in the full-fledged stage of miniaturization”.

However, analysts say while there is evidence the program is advancing, it is difficult to assess its true extent.North Korea miniaturized nuclear warheads

The claim comes hours after North Korea cancelled a planned visit by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Ban Ki-moon was due to visit an industrial complex in the Kaesong economic zone run jointly by the North and South and would have been the first UN chief to visit North Korea in more than 20 years.

Speaking at a forum in Seoul, Ban Ki-moon said the move was “deeply regrettable” and that no explanation was given.

North Korea previously claimed it had miniaturized a device for the nuclear test it conducted in 2013 but experts have continued to debate how far along that process it is.

The latest announcement on nuclear advances follows the publication earlier this month of pictures apparently showing a missile being launched from a submarine. Some experts have said the images may have been doctored.

Cannes 2015: Festival High Heel Policy Sparks Outrage

Some Cannes attendees protest the festival’s heel’s-only policy for women on the red carpet.

According to new reports, the Cannes Film Festival is not allowing women into screenings if they are wearing flat shoes.

Film producer Valeria Richter, who has part of her left foot amputated, says she was stopped at the Cannes Film Festival for not wearing high heels.

Valeria Richter, who was eventually allowed in, spoke after Cannes was accused of turning away women in flat shoes.

The festival has denied heels are part of the official dress code.Cannes high heel policy scandal

A spokeswoman said ushers had been “reminded” of this, suggesting women in flat shoes would now be admitted.

However, numerous festival-goers have reported seeing women being turned away.

Among them was Asif Kapadia – whose Amy Winehouse documentary premiered in Cannes last weekend – who said his wife had been stopped on the red carpet but was “eventually let in”.

Although Valeria Richter was eventually granted entry, she said “many of my colleagues who can’t wear heels were rejected and did not come in”.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux has said “rumors” of a ban on heels were “unfounded”.

Writing on Twitter, Thierry Fremaux said: “For the stairs, the regulations have not changed: <<No smoking, formal wear>>. There is no mention of heels.”

The row is awkward for Cannes in a year when it was seeking to address sexism in cinema.

The festival opened with a female-directed film for the first time since 1987, and organizers have endorsed a series of Women in Motion talks by stars such as Isabella Rossellini and Salma Hayek.

Eurovision 2015: PKN Knocked out of Song Contest in First Semi-Final

PKN (Pertti Kurikan Nimipaivat) has been knocked out of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in the first semi-final last night.

The Finnish Punk band is the first Eurovision act to all have developmental disabilities.

They are one of six entries going home, along with Danish boyband Anti Social Media.

It is the first time Denmark has failed to get to the final since 2007.

Ten acts – Russia, Serbia, Armenia, Belgium, Greece, Estonia, Hungary, Albania, Romania and Georgia – are all through to final on Saturday, May 23, in Vienna.

Netherlands also made a surprise exit.PKN Eurovision 2015

Last year their act, The Common Linnets, came second in the contest.

Fans of PKN reacted angrily to news they had not been voted through to the final, after they ranked among early favorites with bookmakers.

Moldova, Macedonia and Belarus were also knocked out, with another 17 acts set to compete in the second semi-final on May 21.

This year, long-time Eurovision fans Australia will also go straight through as a wildcard entry, competing for the first time with their act Guy Sebastian to celebrate the song contest’s 60th anniversary.

Last year’s winner Conchita Wurst – who earned host country Austria an automatic place after storming to victory in Copenhagen – opened the semi-final with a performance of Rise Like A Phoenix, before switching to her other role hosting this year’s green room.

Votes from viewers in all 16 countries appearing in last night’s semi-final made up 50% of the acts’ total scores, with the other half supplied by professional juries.

High Definition Video Conferencing Beyond the Boardroom

High definition conferencing is nothing new in the boardrooms of worldwide corporations, but the rapid expansion of cloud-based videoconferencing apps more businesses of a more modest budgetary level are discovering what high definition can do for them. Far from being out of reach, cloud apps have brought high definition to wherever you, or your staff, happen to be at the time. Liberated from large room-based systems, modern videoconferencing can take place between locations and between devices. You can have face time with anyone, anywhere, anytime. And in the end it can save you a lot more than money.

The Hard Costs of ‘Soft Costs’

A recent Gallup poll had a hard wake-up call for human resources and management across all spectrums of business. When seven out of 10 of your best educated senior employees are disengaged from their jobs. Workers who are engaged and involved, enthusiastic about their environment, and contributing to their organizations in a positive manner have reached a massive low. As productivity has grown, so have demands on the senior workers to contribute more and more of their time to the success of the company, often to the detriment of time they would otherwise devote to their family, or even to themselves. The competitive pressure cooker to give more, do more, and make more has in the end not helped but hurt American business.

Going worldwide, the numbers are actually worse, with 87 percent of highly educated workers from 30 to 64 reporting that they are disengaged at work to some degree. This disengagement can result in high turnover, absenteeism, workplace accidents, quality defects, and even in shrinkage. Re-engaging with employees often reevaluating the culture of the workplace itself. Bringing back enthusiasm, creativity, and even passion requires jettisoning the jargon soaked pabulum of the business publishing industry, created less to help manage actual people, and more to sell books and seminars. Changing the culture to promote the kind of engagement you want to see takes effort and creativity, too.

Rethinking Meetings

People really do love meetings. Actually over 90 percent of employees who regularly attend meetings really do value them as a way to contribute to the success of the company and their projects. However, meetings are very costly. A Verizon study placed the average cost of a five person meeting with four attendees required to travel at over $5,000. In addition to being expensive, the study also found that busy professionals are required to attend an average of 60 meetings per month, and most state that they cannot attend all the meetings that are demanding their time and resources. This and the time that they are required to be away from the office, and away from family, also contributes to a great deal of stress for constantly traveling busy professional.

Bringing the meetings home is one way to handle it, videoconferencing is very popular. Bluejeans HD videoconferencing and other apps have bridged the gap that room-based video systems could not. Bluejeans can operate on any equipment, any system, and most operating systems – such as Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. By bringing the videoconference to your employees, on whatever device they happen to be using at the time, you are making meetings simultaneously more accessible and more inclusive. In addition you are creating the incentive for geographically diverse staff and departments to work together. When a meeting simply takes a few taps and a swipe on someone’s iPad, it becomes as easy or easier than walking down the hall and knocking on someone’s door.

Face Time is Money

Implementing videoconferencing that can be used by everybody, no matter where they are or how they access the Internet, can bring 87 percent of remote users to feel more connected and engaged with their coworkers and their projects. A Gigaom study points out that videoconferencing is an awesome way to increase enthusiasm and productivity. As much as people value meetings, there’s nothing to say that everyone has to be in the same room. Contractors, home workers, office workers, staff at remote worksites, and management can all agree that good meeting really brings life to an otherwise moribund project and passion to the fore.

Making the most of your employees’ creativity and drive doesn’t mean micromanaging or making ridiculous demands of their time and resources. Working to find new tools to help them reengage will mean a lot to your bottom line, as well is to your reputation as an employer that someone would really love to work for. Increasing employee engagement and satisfaction doesn’t mean pampering or pandering, it means giving people the best available tools you can to do what you hired them to do. Videoconferencing can bring your people closer together, and give them a new and deeper interest in their workplace, coworkers, and work.
