El Chapo Guzman Suffers Face and Leg Injuries in Recapture Bid

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman suffered face and leg injuries as he narrowly evaded a police operation to recapture him, Mexican officials have confirmed.

The operation happened in north-west Mexico in recent days but few details have been released.

El Chapo Guzman, aka Shorty, head of the Sinaloa cartel, escaped from a high-security prison in July through a specially dug tunnel.

His escape was an embarrassment for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The Mexican government said in a statement that efforts to recapture El Chapo Guzman had been focused in the north-west of the country, not far from Guzman’s native Sinaloa state.

“As a result of these actions, and to avoid his capture, in recent days, the fugitive engaged in a hasty retreat, which, according to the information received, caused him injuries to one leg and the face,” the statement said.El Chapo Guzman recapture Mexico

“It’s important to clarify that these injuries were not a product of a direct clash,” it added, without giving further details.

The statement added: “The security cabinet continues to conduct all actions that will allow the recapture of this criminal.”

Mexico has arrested several prison officials since El Chapo Guzman’s escape.

Investigators said El Chapo Guzman had inside help to flee through a tunnel that ran one mile from under a shower in his cell to outside the prison.

After his escape, El Chapo Guzman took to Twitter to taunt the police and insult President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The drug lord was first arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and spent nearly a decade in another maximum-security Mexican jail before escaping, reportedly in a laundry basket.

El Chapo Guzman was on the run for 13 years before being held again in 2014 after a series of high-profile arrests of associates and covert surveillance by the US authorities.

Saudi Arabia: ISIS Kills Five People at Shias Mourning in Saihat

At least 5 people have been killed and nine wounded in an attack on a Shia gathering hall in Saihat, eastern Saudi Arabia, the interior ministry says.

The killings, in Saihat in Eastern Province on October 16, come two days after the start of Ashura commemorations, a holy occasion for Shia Muslims.

A group claiming links to Islamic State (ISIS) said it carried out the attack.

The Saudi Arabian interior ministry said a gunman opened fire at random before police intervened and shot the attacker dead.

Later, a group calling itself Islamic State-Bahrain State said that one of its “soldiers” had attacked “a Shia infidel temple” with an automatic weapon.

The group warned that “infidels will not be safe in the island of Mohammed”.

Correspondents say the name of the group appears to be a reference to the historic area of Bahrain, which once encompassed parts of what is now Saudi Arabia.

Other, smaller attacks against the Shia community in the east of Saudi Arabia were also reported on Friday evening.

The minority Shia community in Saudi Arabia is increasingly being targeted. Most live in the oil-rich east, and many complain of discrimination.

In May, ISIS said it had carried out a deadly bomb attack outside a Shia mosque in the city of Damman.

A week before, more than 20 people were killed in the village of al-Qadeeh when an ISIS suicide bomber struck during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque.

That attack was the first to be claimed by a Saudi branch of ISIS.

Hardline Sunnis regard Shia Muslims as heretics.

Saudi Arabia, which is part of a US-led coalition against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, has previously been threatened by ISIS.

The Saudis are also leading a coalition of Arab states in an air campaign against Shia rebels in Yemen.

In the Ashura commemorations, Shias mourn the death of Hussein, a venerated grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Typhoon Koppu Heading to Philippines

0

The Philippines is preparing for Typhoon Koppu that is forecast to dump heavy rain and cause severe flooding when it arrives at the weekend.

On October 16, President Benigno Aquino warned people living in the path of Typhoon Koppu to be ready to evacuate.

In a TV address, Benigno Aquino said the storm could bring up to 12 hours’ torrential rain and cause severe flooding.

It was Benigno Aquino’s first such appeal since Typhoon Haiyan struck in 2013, leaving more than 6,000 people dead.

Typhoon Koppu is due to hit the northern island of Luzon early on October 17.Typhoon Koppy Philippines

Forecasters say it is packing winds of up to 115mph and is slow moving, meaning it could bring intense rain over a long period of time.

In his address, Benigno Aquino urged the estimated six million people in the typhoon’s direct path to listen to government warnings and be ready to evacuate their homes if necessary.

He said aid agencies had already distributed emergency supplies to evacuation centers.

The state weather service warned residents on the east coast of Luzon to be ready for possible storm surges of more than 6ft.

Meanwhile, the Philippine military in northern Luzon has been placed on alert for disaster operations.

Typhoon Koppu, also known as Lando, is not due to leave the Philippines until October 20, when it will be heading towards Taiwan.

In November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan – the strongest storm ever recorded on land – swept into the Philippines, destroying entire towns and leaving more than 6,300 people dead and more than 1,000 missing.

Police said that an employee of Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada, told emergency services dispatchers that Lamar Odom had been taking cocaine and libido enhancers.

Motel employees said Lamar Odom had spent several days at the location.

Lamar Odom’s estranged wife, Khloe Kardashian, had been making medical decisions on his behalf.

The sportsman and Khloe Kardashian were married in 2009 in a ceremony that was taped for E! channel.

Although Khloe Kardashian filed for divorce in 2013, it had yet to be processed.

FIFA Corruption Scandal: Sepp Blatter Reveals He Had Gentleman’s Agreement with Michel Platini

0

Sepp Blatter has revealed he had a “gentleman’s agreement” with Michel Platini over the 2 million euro payment he made to the UEFA president in 2011.

The 79-year-old FIFA president faces a criminal investigation over the payment, made nine years after Michel Platini, 60, carried out consultation work for the Swiss.

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini deny any wrongdoing.

“It was a contract I had with Michel Platini, a gentleman’s agreement that was followed through on,” Sepp Blatter told Swiss broadcaster RROTV.

Soccer’s world governing body FIFA has imposed a 90-day suspension on Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini while corruption claims concerning the payment are investigated.Michel Platini and Sepp Blatter FIFA corruption scandal

Former France international captain and coach Michel Platini says the money was an unpaid additional salary due from the time he served as Sepp Blatter’s advisor between 1998 and 2002.

Following a UEFA meeting on October 15, the Football Association (FA) suspended its support for Michel Platini’s bid to become FIFA president “until the legal process has been concluded and the position is clear”.

UEFA issued a statement saying Micehl Platini should be given the opportunity “to clear his name” and urged the FIFA ethics committee to conclude its investigation by mid-November.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place on February 26, 2016.

Meanwhile, FIFA says it will investigate “very serious allegations” that a 6.7 million euro payment was made to it by Germany’s 2006 World Cup organizing committee.

The bid, led by former World Cup-winning captain and coach Franz Beckenbauer, edged out favorites South Africa in the July 2000 vote to win the hosting rights for the 2006 tournament.

FIFA said the allegations would be reviewed “as part of the independent internal investigation currently being conducted by FIFA under the direction of its legal director with the assistance of outside counsel”.

Germany’s Football Association is also investigating the payment, saying it had found no indication of wrongdoing in the overall bid process but that the payment “may potentially not have been used for the intended purpose”.

Largest African Elephant Killed by German Hunter in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s Conservation Task Force has criticized the killing of a “majestic” 60-year-old elephant by a German hunter, calling it “unethical”.

The unnamed hunter, who was pictured with the corpse, reported paid $60,000 for the legal hunt.

It comes months after American dentist Walter Palmer killed Cecil the lion.

There was international outrage after Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, was killed during another legal hunt in July, also in Zimbabwe.

Walter Palmer found out earlier this week that he will not face charges over the shooting.

The death of the elephant also took place during a hunt in Zimbabwe’s southern Gonarezhou National Park.Zimbabwe elephant killed by German hunter

The Zimbabwe Association of Safaris Operators (Zaso) said the elephant was the largest seen in Zimbabwe in 100 years. Its tusks, which were so large they almost touched the floor, weighed 120lbs.

Zaso chairman Emmanuel Fundira said the hunter should have thought twice before shooting.

Walter Palmer was vilified after being identified as the killer of Cecil the lion and he closed his dental practice in Minnesota temporarily after campaigners gathered outside.

Animal rights charities criticized the decision not to prosecute him.

Earlier this week, rangers at Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, where Cecil the lion was killed, discovered the carcasses of 26 elephants killed by cyanide poisoning.

Poachers are known to poison salt pans with the drug in order to steal the elephants’s tusks.

Randy and Evi Quaid Released from Vermont Jail

Independence Day actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have been released from custody in Vermont, after a judge dismissed fugitive from justice charges against them.

Randy Quaid, 65, and his wife were taken into custody on October 9 by Vermont police while trying to enter the US from Canada.

They fled to Canada in 2010 after being charged with vandalism and squatting in a Santa Barbara property.

Randy and Evi Quaid denied the charges, claiming the property still belonged to them.

Judge Alison Arms had initially reduced bail for the couple from $500,000 each to $50,000, saying she could not find probable cause to support the vandalism accusations.

After a break, she decided to release them because of a discrepancy in dates in paperwork from California.

After they left the courthouse the Quaids said they will stay in Lincoln, Vermont, to care for Evi Quaid’s sick father and address the California charges.

“I never worried about being found guilty or any of that for any of these charges because I know the truth, and I know the facts are going to come out at some point, and today was a good sign of that,” Randy Quaid said.

Speaking outside court, Randy Quaid told reporters he spent his time in jail playing cribbage and Sudoko with three other older inmates.

Evi Quaid’s lawyer told the court that she had been threatened by another inmate who had left feces in her cell.

The Quaids were charged in 2010 with illegal occupation and vandalism of their former home in California. It was alleged the Quaids caused more than $5,000 in damages.

However, the couple claimed the Santa Barbara property still belonged to them.

Randy and Evi Quaid failed to appear in court and an arrest warrant for the couple was issued.

The couple headed to Canada where Randy Quaid requested refugee status, saying his life was in danger from Hollywood “star whackers”.

Evi Quaid, who has dual Canadian and US citizenship, told an immigration hearing how Randy had “known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners”, mentioning Heath Ledger and David Carradine.

Randy Quaid is best known for his roles in Brokeback Mountain, The Last Picture Show, Independence Day and National Lampoon’s Vacation, and for being the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.

John Stamos Charged with DUI after Beverly Hills Arrest

John Stamos has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, stemming for his June arrest in Beverly Hills.

The actor, best known for Full House and ER, is due to appear in court for a hearing on October 16.

John Stamos’ arrest in Los Angeles followed reports of him “allegedly behaving strangely and driving erratically”.

The 52-year-old actor, who is currently working on two TV shows, could face a maximum six-month jail sentence if convicted of the misdemeanor offence.

Any jail time could disrupt work on both his current TV series.

New Fox series Grandfathered, which premiered last month, casts John Stamos in the central role of a middle-aged man who discovers he has a son and infant granddaughter he never knew about.

John Stamos also has a recurring role in Fuller House, the Netflix reboot of sitcom Full House, which is shooting in Hollywood and set to debut on the streaming service in 2016.

Neither Fox nor Netflix made any comment on how the shows might be affected.

A hearing at LA’s Superior Court on October 16, could see a resolution to the case or the setting of a pre-trial hearing, which could mean any jail time for John Stamos is unlikely before the new year.

Beverly Hills police declined to identify the drug John Stamos had allegedly taken before his arrest, nor is it identified in the charging document.

John Stamos, who was taken to hospital at the time of the incident on June 12, checked into rehab following his arrest.

Services Models for Excellent Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting has supported the development of industry standards for the last decade. In doing so, it’s become essential to keeping up with many industry developments in a number of different markets. The tools provided and low impact of cloud based solutions to company space budgets and technical support have ingratiated it to companies the world over. When looking to branch out your cloud based services or looking to adopt them for the first time into your company, it can be difficult to know what to look for. There are many host providers that claim to be in the top tier of the cloud industry, but what exactly puts them there? The honest answer is that the top tier for services you need may be completely different than what the market is currently advertising, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find what you’re looking for.

Understanding the Stack

If you’re perusing cloud based hosting for solutions that apply to your business, you may already know about the cloud computing stack and if not directly, it’s likely you’ve seen it or one of its components. The ‘stack’ refers to the general different types of cloud services and how they are implemented and utilized to accomplish different goals. The stack is usually referred to be one of four acronyms: SPI or Software, Platform, Infrastructure and then further broken down into SaaS, PaaS and Iaas (Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service). How these different stacks work is the key to which one you should be looking for when searching for top cloud hosting providers at a comparison engine like Cloud Kompare.

Software as a Service

Companies like Google, Facebook, WordPress and more are all examples of the SaaS model of cloud based computing. These recognizable brands all offer software that is available without installation or exactly system requirements, often launched through the browser and easy to access just about anywhere you have an internet connection. Software as a Service has become more popular as mobile phones have begun to rival desktop and laptop PCs in terms of computing power. Many SaaS providers have jumped on the mobile bandwagon, offering apps and options for access their software through mobile phone screens, which are connected even more often than PCs today. SaaS doesn’t make sense as a solution for every company, but companies where there’s a lot of interaction between partners and the public or where partners and employees are often out of the office on business can benefit from mobile access to applications that SaaS provides.

Platform as a Service

Platform as a service takes cloud computing in a new direction, offering an environment where developers and programmers can ply their skills online to develop services and applications for a company without the need of specialized tools and software of their own. There are many benefits to a PaaS stack including a reduction in cost because specialized tools and software aren’t required for developers to work in, and it allows for non-expert individuals to gain experience working with the tools, protocols and structures your company requires for the development of their applications. Tools like Operating Systems, Storage solutions and hosting can all be packaged in a PaaS stack, which allows for flexibility for accessing and working with tools even when outside the office.

Infrastructure as a Service

The third cloud computing stack is Infrastructure. IaaS may be considered two tier of cloud computing services because the idea behind this stack is to create a virtual machine with which companies, partners, employees and potentially even the public can interact. Like a virtual desktop or a virtual data center, IaaS focuses on creating an infrastructure that is stored completely in the cloud. This particular stack is a good failsafe when put into place because it offers support over multiple cloud servers and often comes with a downtime guarantee because if one server or center fails, others are able to distribute the load and keep your access and applicable stable. IaaS is a scalable solution for hosting a multitude of virtual environments, from technical support centers to virtual file sharing and teleconferencing and because it’s hosted in the cloud, access isn’t dependent on location

Cloud Computing as a Solution

Whatever stack of cloud computing works best for your company, this expansive and ultimately accessible service can be designed to fit into many different budgets, industries and scenarios. Because cloud computing encompasses a variety of different methodology where it comes to service solutions, it’s becoming an industry standard. When looking for the top cloud hosting providers, be sure you understand which stack will best suit your company or be prepared to look at a great many host providers before you find the one that will work best for the solutions you are looking to implement. While the process may be long, the cloud offers a wide variety of services and access and can be made to fit nearly anywhere.

Brussels Talks: EU Countries Approve Turkey Refugee Action Plan

EU countries have backed an action plan with Turkey, which it is hoped will ease the flow of refugees to Europe.

Nearly 600,000 refugees have reached the European Union by sea so far this year, many of them travelling from Turkey.

The EU leaders agreed to speed up visa liberalization talks for Turks if Ankara stems the influx and to “re-energize” Turkey’s accession dialogue.

European Council President Donald Tusk said he felt “cautious optimism” over the deal.

Meanwhile a refugee thought to be Afghan was shot dead by a Bulgarian border guard after entering the country from Turkey on October 15.

Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov left the Brussels talk on hearing the news.

Turkey had also asked for €3 billion ($3.4 billion) in aid, something German Chancellor Angela Merkel said EU states were considering.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said talks over the aid would continue with Turkish officials over the coming days.

Angela Merkel will travel to Turkey at the weekend.

EU sources had said several countries were cautious about coming to an agreement with Turkey too quickly. Among them were Greece, Cyprus and France.

Jay-Z Copyright Trial: Rapper Denies He Was Aware of Sampling

Rapper Jay-Z has told a Los Angeles jury he was not aware there was a sample of Egyptian songwriter Baligh Hamdi’s 1957 song Khosara Khosara on his 1999 hit Big Pimpin’.

Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, and producer Timbaland are accused of using the melody from the song without permission.

The rapper testified for roughly 90 minutes in court on October 14.

“I didn’t think there was a sample in it,” Jay-Z said.

“Timbaland presented me with a track. I didn’t even think about there being a sample,” he continued.

Jay-Z’ss lawyers told the court Baligh Hamdi’s family had repeatedly been paid for use of the song.

Four notes from Khosara Khosara‘s 74 notes are repeated throughout Big Pimpin’, a music expert has testified.

Asked why he did not thoroughly check out the rights to the track, Jay-Z replied: “That’s not what I do. I make music.

“I’m a rapper, I’ve got a clothing line, I run a label, a media label called Roc Nation, with a sports agency, music publishing and management. Restaurants and nightclubs … I think that about covers it.”

The rapper said he had a team of hundreds of people who dealt with his contracts and licensing.

Timbaland – real name Timothy Mosley – later told the court he had found Khosara Khosara on a CD of Arabic music labeled “license free”.

“I’m thinking it’s free music, free songs, and I sampled it,” he said.

Baligh Hamdi’s nephew, Osama Ahmed Fahmy, first filed a legal complaint in 2007, claiming the musicians had purposefully avoided asking permission because of Big Pimpin’s lyrics.

His lawyer, Peter Ross, has already told the court Jay-Z and Timbaland had infringed Baligh Hamdi’s “moral rights” – a legal concept he claimed was well-established in Egypt which would have required the musicians to get permission to use elements of Khosara Khosara in a song celebrating a promiscuous lifestyle.

Placido Domingo to Undergo Gallbladder Removal Surgery

Placido Domingo has been forced to cancel his conducting engagements at New York’s Metropolitan Opera as he will undergo surgery to have his gallbladder removed.

The Met said in a statement: “It is expected this minimally invasive procedure will allow him to resume his activities after a brief hospital stay.”

Placido Domingo, 74, had been due to conduct four performances of Tosca in October, but will now return on November 2.

Other conductors have been drafted in to fill in for the tenor.Placido Domingo gallbladder removal surgery

Placido Domingo was admitted to hospital on October 13 after suffering inflammation of his gallbladder and will have an operation early next week.

The Spanish tenor has had a number of health problems in recent years.

In 2010, he underwent an operation to remove a cancerous polyp from his colon, returning to performing just weeks after the surgery.

In 2013, Placido Domingo was treated for a blood clot in his lung, forcing him to miss several concerts.

Placido Domingo’s next singing engagement is in December, when he will perform in Verdi’s Macbeth at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia.

Israel: Joseph’ Tomb in Nablus Torched by Palestinians

Joseph’s Tomb, a Jewish holy site in the West Bank city of Nablus, has been torched by Palestinians, amid soaring tensions with Israel.

Rioters set fire to the tomb which Jews revere as that of the biblical figure Joseph. Palestinian security forces managed to put out the blaze.

It came hours after Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Palestinian leadership to stop a wave of attacks.

There have been near-daily stabbings by Palestinians of Israelis this month, as violence between the two sides spirals.

Photo Getty Images
Photo Getty Images

Israel’s military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner tweeted that attack on Joseph’s Tomb was “a blatant violation of the basic value of freedom of worship”.

Peter Lerner said Israeli security forces would “bring perpetrators to justice and restore the site”.

This is not the first time the tomb has come under attack. Palestinians tried to set fire to it again last year and virtually destroyed the site in 2000.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians over the past two weeks have been fuelled by clashes in Jerusalem, in the West Bank, and across the Gaza border, as well as the wave of stabbings.

Seven Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded.

At least 30 Palestinians, including several of the attackers, have been killed in recent violence.

Venezuela: Exiled Opposition Leader Manuel Rosales Arrested in Maracaibo

Venezuelan educator and opposition leader Manuel Rosales has been arrested on his return to the country after 6 years of self-imposed exile.

Manuel Rosales, who said he wanted to take part in December’s parliamentary elections, was detained shortly after landing in the city of Maracaibo.

The politician ran against the late President Hugo Chavez in 2006.

Manuel Rosales, 62, fled to Peru in 2009 amid corruption allegations, which he says are politically motivated.

He was arrested on October 15 as he arrived at Maracaibo from the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba. He is expected to appear in court in Caracas shortly.

Manuel Rosales is charged with corruption during his term as governor of Zulia state between 2000 and 2008.

He had announced on October 9 that he was planning to return to Venezuela.

Shortly before departing from Aruba Manuel Rosales posted a picture of him boarding.

He tweeted: “With God and the Virgin Mary, preparing to go to Venezuela to meet my people again.”

Venezuela’s Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz had warned that there was an arrest warrant against him.

Venezuelans go to the polls on December 6 for the first parliamentary elections since President Nicolas Maduro was elected in 2013.

Venezuela is facing a serious economic crisis, which the opposition blames on failed socialist policies of Hugo Chavez and his successor, Nicolas Maduro.

The government says Venezuela has been hit by a sharp drop in international oil prices, but it also accuses powerful groups of boycotting the economy to destabilize Nicolas Maduro.

Several other opposition leaders have also been detained since last year.

Last month, prominent opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was found guilty of inciting violence during protests in 2014 in which 43 people – from both sides of the political divide – were killed.

Leopoldo Lopez was sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison.

The US government and the UN have called for the release of the opposition politicians.

Angelababy’s Face Examined for Legal Case

Chinese actress Angelababy’s face has been examined as part of a high-profile legal case in China, local media report.

Angelababy, 26, is suing a clinic for defamation after it alleged she had plastic surgery done on her face.

Doctors who examined the actress on October 15 said that her looks were genuine.

It came a week after Angelababy’s widely-publicized wedding to actor Huang Xiaoming, who has defended her, saying she “sometimes looks quite ugly”.

A Beijing judge had suggested that Angelababy’s face be examined by medical professionals to certify its authenticity.Angelababy plastic surgery case

Angelababy, whose real name is Yeung Wing, went through a series of X-ray scans and tests – which at one stage involved a doctor prodding her face – at a plastic surgery hospital in Beijing on October 15. She was accompanied by notaries public and several journalists.

Hospital chief Qi Zuoliang later pronounced Angelababy’s looks to be genuine.

“Baby’s entire head and facial bones do not have any signs of incisions,” he told reporters, using a popular abbreviation of the actress’ stage name.

News of the actress’ examination dominated discussion on Chinese social network Sina Weibo on October 15, with many of her fans expressing support.

Angelababy, who first shot to fame as a model and actress in Hong Kong, has long been dogged by rumors that she had plastic surgery, with pictures purportedly showing her natural face circulating online in recent years.

The actress has sued Beijing beauty clinic Ruili for carrying an article on its website in 2012 alleging that she had plastic surgery, and is seeking 500,000 yuan ($79,000) in compensation.

Angelababy has insisted that her unique looks come from her European heritage – her paternal grandfather was German.

She married Huang Xiaoming on October 8 in one of the biggest and most lavish celebrity weddings China had seen, which reportedly cost 200 million yuan ($31.5 million).

Huang Xiaoming has previously defended Angelababy, saying in a 2014 interview: “Actually she sometimes looks quite ugly to me.

“I’m not an idiot, I definitely can tell she hasn’t had plastic surgery, sometimes she doesn’t put on make up and she really looks like those ugly pictures of her.”

VW Scandal: CEO Matthias Muller Addresses Top Management

0

Volkswagen’s new CEO Matthias Muller has said the automaker can shine again in two to three years.

Addressing the company’s top managers on October 15, Matthias Muller said VW needed to become leaner and take decisions more rapidly.

The comments come as VW said it would recall 8.5 million cars in Europe as a result of the diesel emissions scandal.

The move was prompted by Germany’s automotive watchdog, which had earlier told VW to recall 2.4 million vehicles in the country.

German media reports suggest the KBA had rejected VW’s proposals that car owners could voluntarily bring their cars in for repair.

VW gave no details of the recall and said it would contact individual customers directly.

It added that it was working on solutions to fix the recalled cars “at full speed”.Matthias Muller VW CEO

Matthias Muller took over as VW’s chief executive last month when the previous head, Martin Winterkorn, stepped down as a result of the scandal.

He told managers on October 15: “We will significantly streamline structures, processes and (decision-making) bodies. We must become leaner and take decisions more rapidly.”

“Our competitors are only waiting for us to fall behind on technology matters because we are so preoccupied with ourselves. But we won’t let that happen,” Matthias Muller added.

Meanwhile, Italian police have raided VW offices in Verona and Lamborghini offices in Bologna.

Reports suggest Italian prosecutors are investigating alleged commercial fraud.

Last month, authorities in the US discovered some VW diesel cars had been fitted with a device to cheat emissions tests. VW subsequently admitted that up to 11 million cars worldwide could have the device fitted.

Volkswagen has launched a thorough investigation into the scandal, but new chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch has warned that answers would take “some time”.

The company has set aside €6.5 billion ($7.4 billion) to cover the costs of the scandal, but some experts believe the final bill could be much higher.

VW shares recovered slightly last week but are still down almost 20% since the scandal broke in mid-September.

Separately, Winfried Vahland, who was tipped to become VW’s North America boss, has resigned.

VW said Winfried Vahland was leaving because of “differing views on the organization of the new group region”.

EU Refugee Talks: Angela Merkel Calls for Fair Distribution of Effort

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that all EU countries must be prepared to send security staff to the bloc’s external borders.

Speaking as she arrived at an EU leaders’ summit in Brussels, Angela Merkel said it would be unfair to ask EU countries seeing the majority of initial refugee entries to secure borders as well.

The meeting aims to secure Turkey’s agreement to a plan to halt the flow of refugees trying to reach Europe.

Nearly 600,000 refugees have reached the EU by sea so far this year.

Describing the current situation as “very disorderly”, Angela Merkel said: “It’s quite obvious that only a few countries today take the majority of refugees and if these countries now are asked to secure the external borders on top of that, I don’t think it would be what we could call a fair distribution of effort.”

The summit aims to tackle the migration crisis by working with non-EU countries, protecting the EU’s external borders and ensuring some migrants are sent back.

Estonian PM Taavi Roivas said immediate action was needed to preserve the EU’s borderless Schengen area, which has come under increasing pressure, with some states reintroducing controls to prevent migrants from crossing borders.

Meanwhile Hungary’s PM Viktor Orban said his country would decide whether to close its border with Croatia by October 16.

Hungarian state TV reported Viktor Orban as saying he would prefer the EU to defend its external border in Greece but could seal its Croatian border “within an hour if necessary”.

There were also calls for member states to address the causes of migration by providing more money for Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey and for development in Africa.

“Member states need to put their money where their mouth is,” said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Meanwhile, EU negotiators in Ankara are making “good progress” in talks with Turkish officials, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.

Turkey is hosting some two million refugees, most of them fleeing the war in neighboring Syria.

It has also called for the establishment of an international “safe zone” for refugees inside northern Syria.

The 28 EU leaders meeting in Brussels are hoping the Turkish government will sign up to a joint action plan that includes: greater financial and procedural support for Turkey to deal with refugees; gaining permission from Turkey to help patrol its coastline; combating people smuggling; strengthening return operations.

Turkey is expected to press for progress towards visa-free travel for its citizens to European countries within the so-called Schengen area.

About two million people have fled to Turkey in more than four years of conflict in Syria. Every week thousands seek to enter the EU – typically via Greece – with many heading towards northern Europe.

Germany accepted the largest number of asylum claims in 2014 and expects to see as many as 800,000 in 2015. Sweden had the second-highest number of asylum seekers.

New York Restaurant Group to End Tipping Practice

Danny Meyer, one of New York’s most prominent restaurateurs, has announced he is planning to eliminate tipping in his eateries, a move that could inspire others to follow suit.

The restaurateur, who owns 13 restaurants including The Modern, said the tipping system was unfair as it only benefited a few restaurant workers.

Waiting staff typically receive most of their wages in tips, but cooks and other workers do not.

Danny Meyer plans to start the policy at four of his restaurants in November 2015.

“We believe hospitality is a team sport, and that it takes an entire team to provide you with the experiences you have come to expect from us,” he said in a statement.New York tipping The Modern restaurant

Menu prices will increase 25% to 35% to account for the changes.

Restaurants in the US are rethinking how they compensate their employees for a number of reasons.

In major cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco, restaurants are finding it hard to retain kitchen staff as the cost of living in those areas increases.

Because of tips (typically 20% of each bill), servers sometimes end up earning much more than highly skilled cooks.

Restaurant workers across the US have also been lobbying for better wages in recent years. New York City and other cities and states have increased their minimum wage in response.

Some high-end restaurants in have already stopped accepting tips, but Danny Meyer’s empire is the most prominent restaurant group to date to embrace the move.

Melissa Fleischut, president and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, said Danny Meyer’s decision could have a ripple effect in the industry.

“I think that because it is Danny Meyer and he is considered a leader in the restaurant industry, that a lot of people are going to look at this move,” she said.

Danny Meyer’s restaurants and other businesses include: Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Blue Smoke and Jazz Standard, Shake Shack, The Modern, Cafe 2 and Terrace 5 at MoMA, Maialino, Untitled at the Whitney Museum, Union Square Events, and Hospitality Quotient.

VW Recalls 8.5 Million Vehicles in Europe over Emissions Scandal

0

VW has announced it will recall 8.5 million vehicles in Europe as a result of the diesel emissions scandal.

The move was prompted by Germany’s automotive watchdog (KBA), which earlier told Volkawagen to recall 2.4 million domestic cars.

German media reports suggest the KBA earlier rejected VW’s proposals that car owners could voluntarily bring their cars in for repair.

Meanwhile, Italian police have raided VW offices in Verona and Lamborghini offices in Bologna.

Reports suggest Italian prosecutors are investigating alleged commercial fraud.

Separately, the man tipped to become VW’s North America boss has resigned.

VW said Winfried Vahland was leaving because of “differing views on the organization of the new group region”.VW recall Europe 2015

The automaker gave no details of the recall and said it would contact individual customers directly.

VW added that it was working on solutions to fix the recalled cars “at full speed”.

Last month, authorities in the US discovered some VW diesel cars had been fitted with a device to cheat emissions tests. VW subsequently admitted that up to 11 million cars worldwide could have the device fitted.

VW has launched a thorough investigation into the scandal, but new chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch has warned that answers would take “some time”.

The company has set aside €6.5 billion ($7.4 billion) to cover the costs of the scandal, but some experts believe the final bill could be much higher.

VW shares recovered slightly last week but are still down almost 20% since the scandal broke in mid-September.

El Chapo Guzman Escape 2015: New CCTV Footage Shows Further Details

Further details of the escape of Mexico’s most infamous drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, aka Shorty, have been shown in a new video broadcast by Mexican TV station Televisa.

The leaked footage shows that 26 minutes passed between El Chapo Guzman’s escape from his cell through a tunnel in the shower and guards noticing he was gone.

The hapless guard first on the scene reports a “big” hole – but does not clarify that the prisoner is missing.

El Chapo Guzman has been on the run since his jailbreak on July 11.

The CCTV footage is a longer version of that shown by the government shortly after El Chapo Guzman’s escape and has audio – which the one shown by government officials did not.

It reveals the reaction of the guards as they reach the cell and find no sign of the inmate – and a large hole in the floor of the shower area.

The guard, who is standing just outside the cell, repeatedly calls “Guzman? Guzman?” and receives no answer.

He then alerts his commander, telling him that there is “a hole in the shower drain”.

Asked by his commander how big, the guard says: “Big, boss, big.”

It is only then that the commanding officer says: “Listen, and the inmate is not there?”

“No, boss, he’s not,” the guard replies.El Chapo Guzman escape CCTV

Televisa showed side-by-side shots of the CCTV footage from Shorty Guzman’s cell and from the control centre where guards monitored the prisoners.

Prior to his escape, the sound of loud hammering can be heard and El Chapo Guzman is seen turning up the volume of his TV.

Despite the sound of drilling that could be heard underneath the noise from El Chapo Guzman’s TV, the guards monitoring the screens seem unmoved.

However, it is not clear what the guards could see on their individual monitors.

The staff in the monitoring centre also apparently fail to notice the moment Shorty Guzman disappeared behind a small wall dividing the shower from the rest of his cell.

He had previously apparently used the toilet, inspected the shower area, then put his shoes on.

El Chapo Guzman’s escape from the maximum-security Altiplano jail was a huge embarrassment to the government of President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Not only was it the second time that El Chapo Guzman had broken out of a top security jail, it came just months after the then-attorney general said Guzman did not pose a flight risk.

Dozens of people have been arrested in connection with the escape, including many guards and the prison’s director.

On October 14, the governor of north-western Sinaloa state said extra soldiers had been deployed to the border region with Durango state to search for the fugitive drug lord.

Joaquin Guzman was born in Sinaloa and is the leader of the powerful cartel of the same name which has smuggled huge amounts of drugs from South and Central America to the US.

The international crime gang is also engaged in myriad other criminal activities such as money laundering and extortion, and has been blamed for countless murders.

Oscar Pistorius Granted House Arrest After Spending 12 Months in Jail

Oscar Pistorius will be moved from jail to house arrest on October 20, a South African parole board says.

The Paralympic athlete, who is jailed for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2014 after being found guilty of culpable homicide, or manslaughter.

Oscar Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door but said he thought she was an intruder.

The prosecution has appealed, saying the double-amputee should instead be convicted of murder.

That case is expected to be heard on November 3.

Oscar Pistorius has spent 12 months in jail and will now spend the rest of his sentence under what is termed in South Africa “correctional supervision”, the parole board said.

An earlier decision to release Oscar Pistorius in August was blocked by South Africa’s Justice Minister Michael Masutha, who said it had been made “prematurely”.

At the time, Reeva Steenkamp’s family had said that 10 months behind bars was “not enough”.

Responding to today’s decision, a lawyer speaking for the Steenkamp family said Reeva’s parents had expected the early release even though they opposed it, adding that nothing could bring back their daughter.

The Pistorius family has said they have received the news of his planned release, but are not making any further comment.

During his house arrest, Oscar Pistorius is likely to face restrictions in terms of gun ownership and may have to continue getting psychotherapy.

Oscar Pistorius, 28, shot to global fame after competing for South Africa at both the Olympics and Paralympics in London in 2012.

Jay-Z Copyright Trial Begins in Los Angeles

Jay- Z’s copyright trial over his 1999 hit Big Pimpin’ has begun in Los Angeles.

The rapper is accused of using the melody of Egyptian songwriter Baligh Hamdi’s 1957 song Khosara Khosara without permission.

Jay-Z’s lawyers and producer hip-hop Timbaland say they secured the appropriate rights to feature the tune in the chorus.

The misician is due to testify along with an expert on Egyptian music.

The case has taken years to get to court, with Baligh Hamdi’s nephew, Osama Ahmed Fahmy, first filing a legal complaint in 2007.

Osama Ahmed Fahmy’s lawyer Peter Ross claimed Jay-Z had purposefully avoided asking permission because they knew it wouldn’t be granted because of the risqué lyrics used on Big Pimpin’.

“You have to go to the composer himself, or his heirs, play the work, and get his approval,” Peter Ross said.

“That he never did.”

The lawyer also accused Jay-Z of violating Baligh Hamdi’s “moral rights” – a legal concept he claimed was well-established in Egypt which would have required the musicians to get permission to use elements of Khosara Khosara in a song celebrating a promiscuous lifestyle.

Jay-Z’s lawyer Andrew Bart argued that the lyrics of Big Pimpin’ should not be discussed in relation to the trial.

District Court Judge Christina Snyder agreed, saying examining Jay-Z’s lyrics would be irrelevant in this case.

Timbaland’s lawyer Christine Lepera said the producer used Baligh Hamdi’s tune – which featured in a 1957 Egyptian film and became a major hit – without realizing it was owned by EMI Music Arabia.

The producers later paid $100,000 to the record label to acquire the license.

However, Osama Ahmed Fahmy argued the payment was inconsequential, and that only Baligh Hamdi’s heirs had the right to approve a derivative work of the musician’s composition.

Christine Lepera also denied Big Pimpin’ used major elements of Baligh Hamdi’s work, saying much of its music was simple and not subject to copyright.

She added that Osama Ahmed Fahmy’s legal claim was an “effort to get an undeserved income”.

The trial is the second high-profile musical copyright case, after a federal jury ruled earlier this year Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams plagiarized Marvin Gaye in their hit Blurred Lines.

Marvin Gaye’s family were initially awarded $7.4 million, but that was later reduced to $5.3 million.

Sienna Miller Admits Pulling out of Play over Pay Inequality

Actress Sienna Miller has revealed she turned down a play because she was offered less than half the pay of her male co-star.

In an interview with E! news, Sienna Miller said she did “what we have to start doing, unfortunately, at the expense of our creative dreams”.

The actress said: “I walked away from a play I wanted to do because I was offered less than half of what the other man was offered and it was just the two of us.”

Sienna Miller did not name the production. She was speaking after Jennifer Lawrence wrote an essay on gender discrimination in Hollywood.

Jennifer Lawrence wrote of her anger at finding out she was paid less than her male co-stars after emails from Sony Pictures were leaked last year.

One published email revealed that Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid much less than their American Hustle co-stars.

In the article on Lena Dunham’s site Lenny, Jennifer Lawrence said she “didn’t get mad at Sony”, adding: “I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say there was an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight. I didn’t want to seem <<difficult>> or <<spoiled>>.”

Sienna Miller was speaking during a joint interview with actor Bradley Cooper, with whom she is appearing in the forthcoming film Burnt.

Bradley Cooper also co-starred with Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle.

The actor told E! he had not read the essay but said: “One thing I could say is that’s interesting because if you think that you only deserve a certain amount and that’s not correct, it’s about changing that mindset and sticking up for yourself the way that Sienna did.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s article has drawn support from many of her Hollywood friends.

Emma Watson, Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Banks were among those to tweet their support.

Elizabeth Banks declared: “I love Jennifer Lawrence.”

Emma Watson also said: “O Jennifer Lawrence I love you so”.

While Jessica Chastain exclaimed: “Yessssssss! Get it girl.”

Last week, Meryl Streep – one of Hollywood’s most successful actors – spoke out about gender discrimination in the film industry, saying that even she receives less pay than male co-stars.

At a global symposium on gender in the media, Geena Davis called for more women on screen and more challenging female roles in TV and film.
