The Supreme Court Vacancy: What You Need to Know About the Death of Scalia

0

Last week saw the death of Antonin Scalia, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Whether he died on the night of February 12th or the morning of February 13th has not yet been determined. Reports claim that Scalia died in his sleep from natural causes while hunting in Texas. As permissible under Texas law, the cause of death was pronounced without autopsy taking place. That Scalia died shortly after hunting will surprise few.

Scalia’s death marks only the second time in sixty years a Justice has died while serving on the court. With the number of Supreme Court Justices now down to eight, a vacancy for the ninth position has opened.

Opinion is split on the legacy Scalia has left. He has famously been viewed as an enemy of liberal thought and a staunch defender of conservatism. His apparent goal in his career was to uphold the Constitution as literally as possible. This often meant disregarding ethics, humanitarianism, or pragmatism. He was an avid opponent of individual rights, particularly abortion and homosexuality. As the Constitution didn’t cover them, he claimed, they were fair game for discriminatory lawmakers.

He was also a firm believer in the death penalty, and even pushed for it (unsuccessfully) to be applied to minors. His defence for this appeared to be that the original Constitution did not condemn this. This highlighted his Originalism with regards to the Constitution: the Eighth Amendment, which did condemn such action, was made just four years after the Constitution was set. The Eighth Amendment is now over two hundred years old. It also highlighted his contradictory nature; he defended several other Amendments despite their nature as changes to the original Constitution.

While humanitarians and liberals may have bemoaned his judicial power, many in the criminal defense sector found his policies to be beneficial. His rigid adherence to the Constitution protected many accused criminals and assured their rights were defended. This included an accused’s right to face their accuser and the witnesses against them. Scalia voted to protect American flag-burning protesters from criminal punishment. He also fought against unreasonable and warrantless searches and seizures.

The surviving Justices are split equally in their political party affiliations. Four are Democrats and four, including the Supreme Justice, are Republicans. They are split 4-4 between conservative and liberal ideologies and voting patterns.

It is up to Barack Obama to nominate someone to fill the vacancy. Many Republicans are claiming that the Constitution prevents Obama from nominating anyone. This claim is made on the basis that he is nearing the end of his Presidential term. Others have pointed out that Obama has eleven months left of his term, and that a nomination must be made within a shorter period. This exposes the Republican claims as untrue. However, the Supreme Court needs to approve a nomination. This may not take place during Obama’s term.

The actions of an Associate Justice have far-reaching political consequences. Some are going as far to claim that the filling of this vacancy is of more importance to the American people than that of the Presidential race. Because of the possibility that the next President will have to nominate a new Justice, the 2016 Presidential race may be dramatically altered. We recommend you keep an eye on developments regarding this vacancy.

Patriarch Kirill Walking with Penguins in Antarctica

After meeting Pope Francis in Cuba, the head of Russia’s Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, flew to Antarctica to walk with penguins.

Patriarch Kirill held prayers at a research station before taking a walk with the animals.

A picture of the 69-year-old kneeling eye-to-eye with one went viral.

Russia has 10 research stations in the Antarctic, able to accommodate up to 120 people. Patriarch Kirill visited one, the Bellingshausen research station on the island of Waterloo.

The Russian Orthodox church near the Bellingshausen station, which opened in 2004, is the only church on the continent to hold services all year round, with priests spending the winter there.

Church officials said Patriarch Kirill prayed for polar researchers, including 64 Russians who have died on polar expeditions.

The patriarch’s visit was the first ever by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to Antarctica. It followed the first encounter between a head of Russian Orthodox Church and a pope in nearly 1,000 years.

Since becoming Pope in 2013, Pope Francis has called for better relations between the different branches of Christianity.

Eurovision 2016: New Voting System to Be Implemented

A new voting system will be implemented at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

This is the biggest change to voting since 1975.

In previous years each country’s jury and public votes were combined and announced in one go.

Now the votes will be split with each country’s jury vote cast first, and votes from viewers in all countries combined and announced at the end.

According to organizers, this will create a “dramatic finish” as the winner will only be revealed at the very end.

In previous years the winner has been known for up to 20 minutes before the end of voting.Eurovision 2016 voting

“This format change will inject a new level of excitement into the finish of the Eurovision Song Contest,” said Martin Osterdahl, executive producer for this year’s show.

The new voting system is a “big step forward”, according to Jon Ola Sand – executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest – that will “make a better television show as well as a more exciting competition”.

Jon Ola Sand added: “It is fitting that this change to the contest’s iconic scoring sequence will be debuted in Stockholm, where the famous douze points system was introduced in 1975.”

The same voting system will be used in the semi-finals.

For those wanting to know how their country has voted, the televoting and jury scores from each participating country will be available after the show on the official Eurovision website.

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Stockholm on Saturday, May 14.

US Imposes New Expanded Sanctions on North Korea

0

The US has imposed new expanded sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear program, weeks after it launched a long-range rocket.

North Korea has refused to stop its nuclear program and the bill was easily passed last week by Congress.

The sanctions attempt to cut off money North Korea needed to develop miniaturized nuclear warheads.

The US and China are negotiating over a UN Security Council resolution on new sanctions.

China has said some of the measures could cripple North Korea’s economy.Barack Obama North Korea sanctions

The sanctions freeze the assets of anyone doing business related to North Korea’s nuclear or weapons program or involved in human rights abuses.

The bill also allows for $50 million to support humanitarian programs and transmit radio broadcasts into North Korea.

North Korea recently fired a long-range rocket, which critics said was a test of banned missile technology. State television announced that North Korea had “successfully placed a satellite in orbit”.

The morning after that launch, Barack Obama said: “This is an authoritarian regime. It’s provocative. It has repeatedly violated UN resolutions, tested and produced nuclear weapons, and now they are trying to perfect their missile launch system.”

It came after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January. Analysts say Kim Jong-un is looking to appear powerful before his important Seventh Party Congress in May.

“The bill was the first one exclusively targeting North Korea, which was passed in an unusually expeditious fashion. We expect it to provide a platform for the US to take strong and effective measures [against North Korea],” said South Korea’s foreign ministry in a statement.

South Korea has said it will be discussing with the US the deployment of a missile defense system.

Aston Martin DB10: James Bond SPECTRE Car Sold for $3.4 Million

James Bond’s SPECTRE car, an Aston Martin DB10, has sold at auction for $3.4 million.

The DB10, one of only two “show cars” from the ten made especially for the movie, smashed its reserve price of $1.5 million.

Made in Warwickshire, the model has a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine and a top speed of 190 mph – but it cannot be driven on public roads.

SPECTRE – The Auction, at Christie’s London King Street, saw 10 lots raise $4.2 million for charities.Aston Martin DB10 James Bond Spectre auction

A further 14 items continue in an online auction which ends on February 23.

Other lots included the “Day of the Dead” costume worn by Daniel Craig in SPECTRE.

Aston Martin has been associated with James Bond since the 1964 film Goldfinger, which featured a DB5.

The auctioned DB10, hand built at Aston Martin’s UK headquarters in Gaydon, was signed by Daniel Craig.

Most of the DB10s were modified for use in the filming of SPECTRE but two were left unmodified for display.

SPECTRE is reported to have destroyed $36 million worth of cars during shooting.

Donald Trump: “I Have a Lot of Respect for Pope Francis”

Donald Trump praised Pope Francis hours after the pontiff questioned his Christian faith.

Pope Francis had said Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the US border with Mexico was not Christian, provoking a strong response from the businessman.

However, hours later, at a town hall event in South Carolina, Donald Trump was more conciliatory.

Republican voters in the US state will make their presidential choice in days.

The Republican presidential hopeful leads the South Carolina polls and he took to a stage in Columbia on February 18 to answer questions on national television.

When asked about his row with the Pope, Donald Trump said he wouldn’t describe it as a fight, although he later said he didn’t like fighting with him.

“I have a lot of respect for the Pope. He has a lot of personality and I think he’s doing a very good job, he has a lot of energy.”

Donald Trump said the pontiff was misinformed when he criticized the proposed wall, because he was not aware of the drugs coming in and the other security problems that made a strong border a necessity.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis said “a person who thinks only about building walls… and not of building bridges, is not Christian”.Donald Trump and Pope Francis row

That was roundly condemned by Donald Trump, who issued a statement in which he called the comments “disgraceful”.

Donald Trump’s anti-immigration stance is a central plank in his campaign – he wants to deport 11 million undocumented migrants and said Muslims should be temporarily barred from coming to the US.

The row with Pope Francis comes two days before Republicans in South Carolina and Democratic voters in Nevada will choose their presidential candidates.

Donald Trump, who has no political experience but won in New Hampshire, is the clear frontrunner in February 20 Republican vote.

At the town hall event on February 18 hosted by CNN, Donald Trump backed down from comments made at the weekend when he said President George W. Bush lied about the existence of weapons of mass destruction before invading Iraq.

Pope Francis: “Donald Trump Is Not Christian”

0

Pope Francis has questioned Donald Trump’s Christianity over his call to build a border wall with Mexico.

The pontiff said “a person who thinks only about building walls… and not of building bridges, is not Christian”.

Donald Trump supports deporting nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Calling himself a “proud Christian”, the Republican presidential hopeful blamed Mexico for the Pope’s remarks, calling them “disgraceful”.

Donald Trump Trump has alleged that Mexico sends “rapists” and criminals to the US.

Pope Francis made the comments at the end of a six-day trip to Mexico.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel,” he said.Pope Francis and Donald Trump

The Pope declined to say whether Americans should vote for Donald Trump, who is leading the Republican race for president.

“I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and I will give him the benefit of the doubt,” he said.

Addressing a rally in South Carolina, Donald Trump responded to Pope Francis’ comments.

“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian,” Donald Trump said.

“No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith.”

“[The pope] said negative things about me. Because the Mexican government convinced him that Trump is not a good guy,” Donald Trump added.

He also said the Vatican was ISIS’ “ultimate trophy” and that if it attacked, “the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened”.

Donald Trump’s Republican rivals, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush, both Catholics, said they look to Pope Francis for spiritual guidance, not political direction.

Marco Rubio said the US has a right and an obligation to control its borders.

Jeb Bush told reporters he “supports walls where it’s appropriate” and that “Christianity is between he and his creator. I don’t think we need to discuss that”.

Earlier this month, Donald Trump called Pope Francis “a very political person” in an interview with Fox News.

“I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border we have with Mexico,” he said.

American Catholics are seen as an important voting bloc in US elections. Many support Republican candidates because of their opposition to abortion and gay marriage.

Donald Trump has been courting the evangelical Christian vote, often successfully, but his fellow Republican rivals have tried to argue that his religiosity is not sincere.

Ted Cruz’s campaign is now running an advertisement featuring a 1999 television interview Donald Trump gave in which he said he was “very pro-choice” when it comes to abortion.

In January, Donald Trump faced ridicule after flubbing a Bible verse when giving a speech to a Christian university in Virginia.

He has said he is a Presbyterian Christian but has had trouble recalling his favorite Bible verse when asked.

Donald Trump has referred to communion, the Christian sacrament signifying Jesus’ last supper, as having “the little wine” and “the little cracker”.

Should You Being Doing More To Protect Your Finances?

0

Money is ubiquitous in every aspect of modern society, and we all have a responsibility to keep our finances in great health. A better economic status will open up a world of possibilities. More importantly, making those improvements will create a brighter future for your loved ones too.

We all try to keep an eye on our finances. But the harsh reality is that most people fail to utilise their resources to maximum impacts. Regardless of your financial status, there’s always a way to improve things. Quite frankly, finding those options should be a priority.

Here are some of the key elements to ensure that your finances are in the best condition possible. Make the necessary changes, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly the results start to show.

Image:

Cut Waste

We’re all guilty of wasting money in one sense or another. With a little extra effort, you could probably cut your bills without making any sacrifice to your life habits. Ignoring those opportunities would be ridiculous.

The home is a great starting place. Making smart investments to lower your bills and improve your property is always a great idea. This could mean installing double glazed windows or an energy saving toilet. Those advancements will benefit you in the immediate future as well as the long-term.

Meanwhile, being resourceful and learning to upcycle items will save you the cost of buying certain items. Furthermore, it can be a great way to give the home a unique vibe. This is especially useful when upgrading the garden or decorating a child’s bedroom.

Earn More

It’s always easier to gain financial security when you have more money entering your bank account each month. Money isn’t the only source of satisfaction at work, but a job that pays well should be a target for everyone.

Those opportunities won’t present themselves on a plate, though. Upgrading your job applications with an improved cover letter or CV can make a world of difference. Alternatively, asking your boss for a salary increase in an appropriate manner could be the key to greater pay.

Image:

The other option is to launch a business of your own. Many startups have embraced modern tech to achieve great success in recent years. And there’s nothing to stop you following in their footsteps. You could even start it as a side operation until you’ve gained a positive reputation.

In any case, earning more money will create a brighter future. Just be sure that you continue to give your finances the same level of attention that they currently receive, and you should be just fine.

Expect The Unexpected

Being responsible with money doesn’t only mean taking care of the present. Life is fragile, and things can take a dramatic change in an instant. Therefore, you must prepare yourself for the worst situations imaginable.

When you suffer a serious accident, your priority should be to find a quick route to recovery. However, it’s difficult not to worry about the financial implications. Calling a motorcycle accident attorney, for example, could be the key to solving those particular problems. And with your finances under control, you’ll be able to concentrate on your health too.

You should make contingencies for redundancy or situations that may cause serious harm to your financial health. You’d be foolish to think that you’ll walk through life without any low points. In most cases, it’s the way we bounce back from those trials that counts. Remove the element of surprise, and you’ll be back on your feet ASAP.

Invest

Savings play a vital role in our lives. Whether it’s building a deposit for our first mortgage or making preparations for a rainy day doesn’t matter. The key is that those funds are an extra lifeline. If nothing else, they will help provide an easier retirement.

Nevertheless, you have a responsibility to make the most of those savings. Leaving your funds to grow in the bank will bring minimal interest. Finding another source of investment could be the key to catapulting your finances to the next level.

Image:

The most important thing is to research your options. Discovering an opportunity that offers enjoyment and better financial gains is vital. CFD trading is a popular option amongst the digitally savvy investors.  Learning more about this option could be very beneficial indeed.

Whatever you do, building those savings at a quicker rate will generate huge rewards in later life. If you are truly committed to building a brighter future, this item has to be on your agenda.

Lech Wales Was a Soviet-Era Informant

According to new documents seized by Poland’s history institute, the country’s former president and Solidarity hero Lech Walesa was an informant for the Communist party’s secret police.

The documents were taken earlier this week from the home of a former communist-era interior minister, Gen. Czeslaw Kiszczak.

Lukasz Kaminski, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, said the documents appear authentic.

Lech Walesa has long denied being an informer in the 1970s.

He said the new materials could not originate from him, according to Polish radio.

The 279 pages of documents have not yet been properly analyzed, and will be made public in due course, Lukaszs Kaminski said.

Gen. Czeslaw Kiszczak’s widow had wanted to sell the documents, the institute said.

The state body has the power to prosecute.

Lech Walesa strenuously denied long-standing allegations of collaboration.

The former president was cleared of security service collaboration by a special court in 2000.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for his role as leader of Solidarity – the first free trade union in the Soviet bloc.

Lech Walesa was elected Polish president in 1990, after the fall of communism.

Changzhou Sues Rival Future Motion over Hoverboard Patent Infringement Claim

Chinese hoverboard maker Changzhou First International Trade is seeking $100,000 in damages plus reimbursement of its legal fees after the US-based rival, Future Motion, dropped its claim of patent infringement.

Last month, Future Motion’s complaint led to Changzhou First International Trade’s products being seized at the CES tech trade show.

Changzhou said there had been no reasonable basis for its rival’s case.

Both Future Motion and Changzhou make electric-powered hoverboards that are unusual for having a single central wheel rather than one at each end.

US marshals enforced a restraining order after receiving a complaint from Future Motion, which led to the closure of Changzhou’s stall at the CES tech show on January 7.Changzhou and Future Motion hoverboard

Changzhou subsequently rejected the allegations, saying a side-by-side comparison of the two firms’ products demonstrated that the platform, footpad and tires designs were “plainly dissimilar to the ordinary observer”.

Furthermore, Changzhou said that the actual scope of Future Motion’s patents was much narrower than had been indicated and that the US company could in no way could claim the rights to “all one-wheeled, self-balancing vehicles”.

Future Motion maintains its claims, dismissing the first of the points as “legal puffery” and insisting that it still believes its intellectual property was infringed.

However, on February 4, Future Motion told the court that it wanted to voluntarily dismiss the case after they achieved their goal of preventing Changzhou’s exhibition at CES.

Changzhou has since petitioned the judge to re-open the case saying it wants to be reimbursed for “business expenses incurred, lost sales suffered, and reputational damage”.

Moreover, Changzhou is also demanding Future Motion be forced to issue a press release notifying the public that it had dismissed its original claims.

Revolutions In Car Technology Poised To Cut Road Deaths

Back in 2012, Google managed to successfully lobby the state of Nevada to allow driverless cars to take to the roads.  Ever since, we’ve watched in wonder as the Google car successfully navigated more than a million miles, all by itself.

google-car
This image provided by Google shows a very early version of Google’s prototype self-driving car. The two-seater won’t be sold publicly, but Google on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 said it hopes by this time next year, 100 prototypes will be on public roads. (AP Photo/Google)

Credit: flickr.com

It’s all been made possible by recent advances in artificial intelligence. It was once thought that making a driverless car would be impossible because it is not possible to program a computer to deal with every possible eventuality on the road.

But now the science of artificial intelligence has moved on substantially. Robots now have the capacity to learn without having to be preprogrammed. Instead, they learn a bit like you and I. Just like us a computer can now receive information from the physical world and interpret in a useful way. In a way, it can really “see.”

Google call this technology deep learning. It’s what allowed IBM’s computer Watson to beat the best players in the world at Jeopardy! back in 2011. And it’s what’s allowing the Google car to navigate the roads of Nevada today.

Each time the car goes out, it builds up a bigger picture of how the road works. Being a computer, it’s then able to remember millions of specific patterns out there in the real world. Nobody programmed all those patterns into the car. It just learned, like we do, that patterns can be generalized.

For us, this is a piece of cake. For computers, this is a quantum leap. It means that they can predict when dangers might be about the arise on the road and take the necessary action to prevent them from happening.

It’s essential we use this technology given the sheer number of car accidents on our roads. In America alone some fifty thousand people die each year, and hundreds of thousands of others are injured.

Then, consider the knock-on effects of all that carnage. Millions of dollars of investment in people, wasted. Billions of dollars of insurance paid out just to replace car wrecks. Thousands of businesses disrupted by unforeseen rises in their insurance premiums.

car-accident

Credit: flickr.com

The autonomous car has the potential to solve these problems, and it’s all based on one of the highest technologies out there. Companies like Tesla are already selling consumer cars with some elements of autonomy. Tesla’s model S, for example, will drive you down the highway without you having to lift a finger.

We’re not quite at the stage where the cars can do it all themselves, though. Manufacturers still have to figure out how to make the cars work when it’s dark and when roads don’t have sidelines. But the road testing that’s been done so far is promising, and the number of naysayers is dwindling.

It’s quite incredible that 10 years ago the idea that we might have the first fully autonomous car by 2020 was far-fetched. Now, though, it seems like a certainty. The technology is virtually proven. All that it needs is one final push and we can finally rid ourselves of the endless carnage on our roads.

Barack Obama to Visit Cuba as Part of Latin America Trip

0

President Barack Obama will visit Cuba in the coming weeks as part of a broader trip to Latin America, reports say.

Barack Obama will be only the second sitting US president in history to travel to Cuba, after Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

Republicans have criticized the visit, saying it should not take place while the Castro family is in power.

Washington and Havana restored diplomatic ties in July 2015 and the US relaxed travel and trade restrictions after a 54-year freeze.

Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, both sons of Cuban migrants, said the visit was a mistake.

Asked whether he would go, Marco Rubio said: “Not if it’s not a free Cuba.”Barack Obama to visit Cuba

Ted Cruz said Barack Obama would be acting “as an apologist”.

In December, Barack Obama told Yahoo News he wanted to meet political dissidents in Cuba to help “nudge the Cuban government in a new direction”.

Cuba’s government responded by saying Barack Obama was welcome to visit but should not meddle in the country’s internal affairs.

Barack Obama’s visit could coincide with the signing of a peace deal in Havana between the Colombian government and rebels from the Farc group to end that country’s civil war, due to take place by March 23.

The deal was encouraged by the Cuban government.

On February 16, US and Cuban officials signed a deal to resume commercial air traffic for the first time in five decades.

However, the Republican majority in the Congress has blocked Barack Obama’s call to end the longstanding trade embargo.

The embargo limits trade and also bans US tourists from visiting Cuba.

Venezuela Increases Fuel Prices for First Time in 20 Years

Venezuela has decided to increase fuel prices for the first time in 20 years, although President Nicolas Maduro claims it will still be the cheapest in the world.

Nicolas Maduro said pump prices of premium fuel would rise from the equivalent of $0.01 a liter to about $0.60.

The cost of lower grade petrol would rise to about $0.10 a liter.

Nicolas Maduro unveiled a series measures to help ease Venezuela’s economic crisis, including devaluing the currency.

The rise in the heavily-subsidized fuel price will save $800 million a year.Venezuela fuel price increased

“Venezuela has the cheapest gasoline in the world,” Nicolas Maduro said in a TV address.

“The cost is almost nothing.”

However, other countries, including Saudi Arabia also have extremely cheap, subsidized petrol prices.

Nicolas Maduro said the price rise was “a necessary measure, a necessary action to balance things, I take responsibility for it.”

Food and petrol price increases in 1989 sparked nationwide protests that resulted in scores of deaths, unrest that is considered to have paved the way for the late President Hugo Chavez’s rise to power.

Venezuela’s economy has been pushed to the brink by the collapse in the oil price, which accounts for about 95% of the country’s export revenues.

The economy shrank 10% in 2015, amid rampant inflation and shortages of some basic products,

According to the Bloomberg news agency, the state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela incurred $15.2 billion in costs in 2013 to maintain Venezuela’s fuel subsidy.

Nicolas Maduro also announced that the government would “simplify” the complex exchange rate from February 18, easing the protected official rate for food and medicine imports which will now operate alongside a parallel “floating” rate.

Investors have become increasingly concerned about Venezuela’s potential default on its huge debts.

Ankara Bombing: At Least 28 Killed by Car Bomb Targeting Military Personnel

At least 28 people have been killed and scores injured in a rush-hour car bombing targeting military personnel in Ankara, Turkey.

Ankara Governor Mehmet Kiliçer said the explosion was aimed at a convoy of military vehicles as it passed through the administrative center of the Turkish state, close to parliament, government buildings and Turkey’s military headquarters.

Deputy PM Numan Kurtulmus confirmed that the attack was carried out with a car bomb, but added that the perpetrators had not yet been identified.

“We do not yet know the perpetrators,” he told reporters.

“This attack did not only target our military personnel in those shuttles. This attack openly targets our entire nation. We condemn those who carried it out, those who instrumentalized the perpetrators, and those who gave logistical, intelligence and even political support to such attacks.”

An official at the armed forces’ general staff confirmed military buses had been the target, hit by an explosive-laden car as they waited at traffic lights.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the attack would only strengthen Turkey’s resolve against insurgents.

PM Ahmet Davutoğlu cancelled a trip to Brussels to attend a security briefing. He said the authorities were looking into information they have received about the explosion on Wednesday night, February 17.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement saying: “We will continue our fight against the pawns that carry out such attacks, which know no moral or humanitarian bounds, and the forces behind them with more determination every day.”

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Security sources told Reuters that “initial signs [indicated] that militants from Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were behind the Ankara bombing on Wednesday”. This has not been confirmed.

Bombardier Cuts 7,000 Jobs Worldwide

0

Bombardier has announced it will cut about 7,000 jobs worldwide over the next two years.

Job losses will be partially offset by hiring for the production of Bombardier’s CSeries commercial jets, the company said.

Bombardier said it had made a net loss of $5.3 billion in 2015, and had revenues of $18.2 billion – 10% lower than the year before.

Bombardier also forecast lower revenues for 2016, saying it expects to generate between $16.5 billion and $17.5 billion.

The 7,000 posts to be cut will include 2,000 contractors, and will fall mainly on the transportation and aerostructure parts of the business.

The Canadian plane and train maker said it had signed a letter of intent with Air Canada for up to 75 CS300 aircraft for as much as $3.8 billion, based on the list price.

Bombardier has been helped by recent cash infusions from the Quebec pension fund, Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, and the Quebec provincial government.

Lokomotiv Moscow Player Dmitri Tarasov Reveals Vladimir Putin Shirt in Turkey Match

0

Russian soccer player Dmitri Tarasov taunted Turkish fans by pulling off his shirt to reveal a picture of President Vladimir Putin after a match in Istanbul.

Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Dmitri Tarasov’s vest showed Vladimir Putin in a navy cap along with the words “the most polite president”.

The politically-charged Europa League match was the biggest sporting encounter between the nations since Turkey shot down a Russian jet in November.

Turkish side Fenerbahce won 2-0.

Lokomotiv Moscow is now likely to face punishment because European soccer’s governing body UEFA does not allow political statements during matches.

Dmitri Tarasov later defended his behavior.

“It’s my president. I respect him and decided to show that I’m always with him and prepared to give my support,” he told Russian news agency R-Sport.

“What was written on that shirt was everything that I wanted to say,” he added.

Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak described the gesture as “a Putin provocation”.

Relations have been tense since Turkey downed a Russian fighter that it said was in its airspace.

The incident sparked a continuing war of words between Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the conflict in Syria.

Before the match in Istanbul, bottles were thrown at the Lokomotiv team bus as it made its way to the stadium. Turkish police said they made three arrests.

However, UEFA rejected calls to separate Russian and Turkish clubs in European competitions and will also not separate the two nations in the draw for this summer’s European Championship.

How Are Healthcare Professionals Using Technology In 2016?

0

We all know that technology has changed the way we live our lives. The growth in technology has helped shape the world in a certain way. Everyone is now so dependent on it to help them do their jobs. One industry that has benefitted from it the most is the health industry. These days, all healthcare professionals will use various technology to conduct their work. When I say ‘healthcare professionals’ I’m talking about a range of people. We’re not just speaking about doctors; we’re talking about anyone that works within healthcare.

More to the point, how are they using technology? What stuff are they using, and how does it make their life easier. And, are patients getting better treatment as a result of it? All these questions will be answered in just a few moments. All you have to do is continue reading down below:

doctors

(Picture from Flickr: https://flic.kr/p/wGWDLp)

X-Rays

Over the years, technology has evolved to help create safer x-rays. Not only are they safer for patients, but they’re also much quicker too. Many dentists can now give a patient an x-ray and get the results on screen immediately. Whereas, in the past, you’d have to wait a few days for the results to become clear. Obviously, this benefits both the patient and the healthcare professional. Neither has to wait long for results, meaning action can be taken quickly. Being able to act quickly means you can help prevent bad things from happening.

Video Consultations

There are some simple advancements that have helped move the industry forward. For example, video calling is now quick and easy to do. You can have a chat with someone, via video, and it will be high-quality and smooth. This translates well into the health industry. Doctors can use it for telemedicine solutions. This refers to conducting consultations by video chats and still getting paid for it. How does this benefit the patient? It means they don’t have to go through the effort of popping into the surgery for a quick checkup. They won’t have to book time off work and can have a quick chat from their laptop. For the doctor, it means their waiting room doesn’t get clogged up, and they can see to more patients. All in all, it helps everyone involved.

Social Networking

Believe it or not but healthcare professionals are using social networks to provide better treatment. They don’t use the regular ones like Facebook & Twitter; they have special ones. Doximity is a social network that only physicians can access. On it, they can communicate and collaborate with one another. It means that a doctor can seek help and advice from thousands of fellow doctors. Doing this can help them solve tougher cases and come up with better solutions. As a result, patients will be receiving better treatment.

It’s evident that professionals are using technology for good reasons. We, as patients, can look to benefit from all the tech being used. We’re getting better healthcare, and things look to continue this trend. The most interesting thing to think about is how different things will be in a few years time. We’ll revisit this topic in a few years and see how much we’ve moved on since then.

Woodside Petroleum Posts 99% Fall in Profits for 2015

0

Australia’s largest independent oil and gas company, Woodside Petroleum, has posted a 99% fall in profits for 2015.

Woodside Petroleum put the dramatic decline in profits down to the global fall in oil prices. In 2015, Brent crude prices fell more than 45%.

The company’s net income came to $26 million from $2.41 billion a year earlier.

However, Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said it would be able to withstand the current oil price landscape.Woodside Petroleum profit report 2015

“Woodside, with its low cost of production, is well positioned to withstand this commodity cycle,” he said.

“A strong performance from our operating assets, disciplined financial management and productivity gains reflect our ongoing commitment to delivering value for our shareholders.”

Peter Coleman added that Woodside had maintained strong levels of liquidity and low levels of committed capital expenditure.

Woodside’s Sydney-listed shares finished the day down 7% on the profit report. Over the last 12 months, the company’s shares have shed close to 22%.

The company has a long history of liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations and concentrates much of its domestic production in Western Australia.

Its exploration operations span the Asia Pacific region, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Atlantic margins and Latin America.

Woodside has a Singapore office that supports its trade and shipping activities as well as interests in Canada and Timor-Leste.

Barack Obama: “Donald Trump Will Not Be President Because It’s a Serious Job”

0

Donald Trump will not be president, says President Barack Obama, because it’s a “serious job”.

Speaking at the ASEAN economic summit in California, the president was asked by a reporter about Donald Trump.

“I continue to believe that Mr. Trump will not be president. And the reason is because I have a lot of faith in the American people,” said Barack Obama.

Donald Trump is the frontrunner in the Republican race to be his party’s choice for the White House.

He has won one state primary already, and leads the polls in South Carolina, where Republicans vote on February 20.

The electorate will not pick him, said Barack Obama, because “they recognize that being president is a serious job”.

“It’s not hosting a talk show or a reality show, it’s not promotion, it’s not marketing, it’s hard. It’s not a matter of pandering and doing whatever will get you in the news on a given day.” Donald Trump criticized by Barack Obama

Donald Trump responded by saying it was a compliment to be criticized by a president who had done so much damage to the country.

His antipathy to Barack Obama goes back a number of years – he used to demand that the president produce proof that he was born in the US.

His election campaign has continuously made headlines, for controversial remarks and policies.

Donald Trump said he would deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, build a wall on the southern border paid for by Mexico and that Muslims should be stopped from entering the US.

His chief rival is Texas Senator Ted Cruz, but one of his other rivals, the big-spending former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, will be hoping for a better performance after disappointment in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Boutros Boutros-Ghali Dies in Cairo Aged 93

Former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has died at the age of 93.

Boutros Boutros-Ghali died at a Cairo hospital on February 16, Egypt’s state news agency said, after reportedly being admitted with a broken pelvis.

His death was confirmed by Rafael Dario Ramirez Carreno, the Venezuelan ambassador to the UN and current president of the UN Security Council.

As an Egyptian, Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the first Arab to serve as UN chief.

Boutros Boutros-Ghali took office in 1992 at a time of increasing influence for the world body following its decisive role in the Gulf War, serving one five-year term.

The 15-member Security Council observed a minute’s silence after the announcement, which was made at the start of a session on Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.

No further details on his death were immediately available.Boutros Boutros Ghali dead at 93

Boutros Boutros-Ghali’s five years in office were clouded by controversy, especially about perceived UN inaction over the 1994 Rwandan genocide and Angolan civil war of the 1990s.

To some, he was an effective diplomat who was caught in a rift between the UN and the United States. Others, most notably in Washington, saw him as a symbol of all that was wrong with the organization.

Boutros Boutros-Ghali was often jeered, and often waded into crowds to confront protesters when security guards permitted.

He shocked many in Sarajevo when he said he was not trying to belittle the horrors in Bosnia but that there were other countries where the “total dead was greater than here”.

After leaving the UN, Boutros Boutros-Ghali served from 1998 to 2002 as secretary general of La Francophonie – a grouping of French-speaking nations.

In 2004, Boutros Boutros-Ghali was named the president of Egypt’s new human rights council, a body created by then-Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak amid US pressure on Arab nations for democratic reform.

Russia Rejects Accusations of War Crimes in Syria

Russia has firmly rejected accusations of war crimes over the bombing of hospitals in Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “those who make such statements are not capable of backing them up with proof”.

Up to 50 people were killed in missile attacks on at least four hospitals and two schools in rebel-held areas of northern Syria on February 15.

The UN said the “deliberate” targeting of such facilities “could amount to war crimes”, according to Reuters.

Russia has been accused, by Turkey among others, of being responsible for the attacks.

Meanwhile, a Turkish official on February 16 said Turkey would back a ground operation in Syria but only “with our international allies”.

Yesterday’s strikes hit two hospitals and two schools in Azaz, near the border with Turkey, and at least two hospitals in Maarat al-Numan, further south.

One of the hospitals in Maarat al-Numan was run by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), which called the attack a “deliberate” strike.

Mego Terzian, president of MSF France, told Reuters “either the [Syrian] government or Russia” was responsible.

The Syrian ambassador to Moscow, Riad Haddad, previously said the US was to blame, a claim the Pentagon dismissed as “patently false”.

The strikes came days after world powers – including Russia – agreed to work towards a selective truce in Syria, due to begin later this week.

The UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, met Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on February 16, and was planning to meet him again later in the day.

They were due to discuss among other things one of the key priorities of the truce – “unhindered humanitarian access to all besieged areas”. There is no word yet on when aid convoys might reach those areas.

Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cast doubt over the “cessation of hostilities” plan, saying it did not mean all the parties would put down their weapons.

“So far they say they want a ceasefire within a week,” Bashar al-Assad said in his first comments of February 12 agreement.

“Who is capable of gathering all these conditions and requirements within a week?”

Syrian government forces – backed by Russian air power – are reportedly continuing to make advances around the northern city of Aleppo, capturing the villages of Ahras and Misqan on February 16.

Manny Pacquiao’s Gay Remarks Spark Controversy

0

Manny Pacquiao has sparked controversy for calling gays “worse than animals” in a recent TV interview.

The boxer’s comments drew ire from gay Filipino celebrities and a rights group, as well as heated discussion.

The former world champion, who positions himself as a conservative Christian politician, is running for a senate seat in May elections.

The largely Catholic Philippines remains conservative on gay rights.

Manny Pacquiao, who is a member of the Philippines house of representatives, was speaking to local station TV5 earlier this week for its election coverage.

In a clip posted online, Manny Pacquiao tells the interviewer: “It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where male is to male and female is to female?”

“The animals are better. They know how to distinguish male from female. If we approve [of] male on male, female on female, then man is worse than animals.”

Filipino comedian Vice Ganda and singer Aiza Seguerra, who are openly gay, have criticized Manny Pacquiao for his comments, calling him a “hypocrite” and a “false prophet”.

Local gay rights organization and political group Ladlad condemned his remarks and issued a call to voters to boycott Manny Pacquiao.

On February 16, Manny Pacquiao, who has won world titles in eight different weight divisions, posted a picture of himself with his wife on Instagram in an apparent response to the controversy.

He said: “I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desires of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says.”

The furor has split the online world, where many Christian followers have shown support for Manny Pacquiao while others have condemned him for his views.

Manny Pacquiao remains hugely popular in the Philippines, and has spoken frequently about his renewed Christian faith. He represents his wife’s home province of Sarangani in the Philippines’ House of Representatives.

Taylor Swift was equally surprised at winning the top honor. Her album, which was released in 2014, came out too late to be eligible for last year’s awards so was finally recognized at this year’s ceremony.

The singer gave a powerful acceptance speech saying: “As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to young women: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.

“But if you focus on your work and don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people that love you that put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”

Kendrick Lamar’s wins included best rap album for To Pimp A Butterfly; best rap song and rap performance for Alright; best rap/sung collaboration and best music video, which he shared with Taylor Swift for Bad Blood.

Alabama Shakes were triple winners. They collected best alternative music album while their song Don’t Wanna Fight won best rock song and rock performance.

George W. Bush Campaigns for Jeb Bush in South Carolina

George W. Bush has started to campaign for his younger brother Jeb’s presidential nomination bid.

The former president met veterans and appeared at a rally in South Carolina on February 15, ahead of the primary election on February 20.

George W. Bush’s legacy has come under fierce attack from Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has spent a lot of campaign cash but failed to make an impact.George W Bush and Jeb Bush campaign

Jeb Bush is struggling to catch up with Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who won the New Hampshire and Iowa contests respectively.

His famous family has largely kept out of his presidential nomination battle and he insisted last year that he was running as his own man.

However, last week his mother Barbara Bush, wife of former President George H.W. Bush, spoke out in his support.

During February 13 Republican debate, Jeb Bush defended his brother’s presidency, saying he had built a “security apparatus to keep us safe”.

Donald Trump tore into George W. Bush’s record, accusing him of lying about the reasons for the Iraq War, which he said had destabilized the Middle East.

Experts say that Donald Trump’s tactic of attacking the former president is risky because he still maintains wide appeal among Republicans in South Carolina, from churchgoers to business leaders and retired military personnel.

On February 15, George W. Bush, alongside his wife Laura, met US military veterans at an American Legion Post in Columbia, South Carolina.

Last week, he praised his brother’s abilities in a radio advert, and Jeb Bush will hope his personal appearance will bring dividends on polling day.

Although George W. Bush remains a divisive figure nationally, he and his father both won primary elections in South Carolina.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who quit the presidential race and is now backing Jeb Bush, said: “The Bush name is golden in my state.”

While Republican voters in South Carolina make their choice for president, the Democratic Party is holding its own contest in Nevada on February 20. Republicans in Nevada and Democrats in South Carolina get to express their views in separate contests the following week.
