A backpack containing multiple bombs was found Sunday night near an Elizabeth, New Jersey, train station, according to the FBI and the city’s mayor.
The suspicious device exploded as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot, officials say.
The backpack had up to five devices, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said. It was found around 9:30 p.m. in a wastebasket outside a neighborhood pub, about 500 feet from a train trestle. The two men who found the backpack thought it might contain something valuable, but they alerted police when they saw wires and a pipe on the devices, the mayor said.
No cell phones or electronic timing devices were found, Chris Bollwage said. No-one was hurt.

The discovery came after three attacks at the weekend – bombs in New York and New Jersey, and stabbings in Minnesota.
The explosion in New York’s Chelsea area injured 29 people.
In New York City, the FBI said it had stopped a “vehicle of interest” in Brooklyn on September 18 but made no arrests.
Five people were taken into custody for questioning, officials told US media. But a spokeswoman said no-one had been charged and the investigation was continuing.
A man seen on surveillance video has been described as a “person of interest” in the police inquiries.
Both the bomb that detonated on September 17 in Chelsea, and a device found nearby, were shrapnel-filled pressure cookers – similar to the bombs used in the attack on the 2013 Boston marathon.
They also used flip phones and Christmas lights designed to trigger the explosive, the New York Times said.
The two instruments appeared to be “similar in design”, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.
Some 1,000 extra security personnel are being deployed to New York’s transport hubs.
Authorities have described the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey, along with a stabbing attack in Minnesota, as acts of terrorism and are trying to establish whether there are any links between them.
But they say they were so crude that it is unlikely an international group was behind them.
ISIS has said the suspected attacker in Minnesota was one of its “soldiers”. It is not clear whether ISIS was involved in planning the assault.

The US-led coalition has admitted its airstrikes in eastern Syria killed at least 62 Syrian troops fighting ISIS.

The US Central Command statement said the coalition believed it was attacking positions of so-called Islamic State and the raids were “halted immediately when coalition officials were informed by Russian officials that it was possible the personnel and vehicles targeted were part of the Syrian military”.
It said the “Combined Air Operations Center had earlier informed Russian counterparts of the upcoming strike”.
It added: “Syria is a complex situation with various military forces and militias in close proximity, but coalition forces would not intentionally strike a known Syrian military unit. The coalition will review this strike and the circumstances surrounding it to see if any lessons can be learned.”
Russia’s defense ministry earlier said that if the US air strikes did turn out to be an error, it would be because of Washington’s refusal to co-ordinate military action with Moscow.
Only if the current ceasefire – which began on September 12 – holds for seven days, will the US and Russia begin co-ordinated action against the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham group, which was previously known as the al-Nusra Front, and ISIS.
The Russian defense ministry quoted a statement by Syrian army general command as saying that the four coalition air strikes on Syrian troops had allowed ISIS to advance.
The Russian foreign ministry said the attack had jeopardized the US-Russia agreement on Syria.
The Syrian statement said that the air strikes were “conclusive evidence” that the US and its allies supported the jihadist group.
There have been no confirmed cases of US air strikes targeting Syrian troops.
An “intentional” blast has injured at least 29 people in the Chelsea district of New York City, officials say.

Chelsea is among the most fashionable districts of Manhattan and its bars and restaurants are usually crowded at the weekend.
President Barack Obama is being kept up to date on the investigation, a White House official said.
Hillary Clinton told reporters she had been in touch with New York officials.
“Obviously we need to do everything we can to support our first responders and pray for the victims,” the Democratic presidential nominee said.
“I’ll have more to say about it when we actually know the facts,” she added.
Speaking at a rally in Colorado before police had commented on the cause of the blast, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told supporters that a “bomb” had gone off.
He said: “Nobody knows exactly what’s going on, but boy, we are living in a time – we better get very tough, folks.”
The earlier bomb explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey, on September 17 came shortly before thousands of runners were to participate in a charity race there. No injuries were reported.

A sinkhole has opened up at a Florida fertilizer plant, causing about 980 million litres of radioactive water to leak into one of the state’s main underground sources of drinking water, state officials say.
The huge sinkhole opened up under a phosphate fertilizer plant near Tampa, damaging the stack where waste water was stored.
The water contained phosphogypsum, a slightly radioactive by-product from the production of fertilizer.
The phosphate company Mosaic said the leak posed no risk to the public.
The company added the contaminated water had not reached private supplies and it was recovering it using pumps.
Mosaic official David Jellerson was quoted as saying by the AP: “Groundwater moves very slowly.”
However, Jacki Lopez, Florida director of the Center for Biological Diversity, told Reuters: “It’s hard to trust them when they say <<Don’t worry,>> when they’ve been keeping it secret for three weeks.”
Dee Ann Miller, a spokeswoman for Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection, said Mosaic was updating state and federal agencies on the situation.
She said her agency was doing frequent site visits to safeguard public health.
“While monitoring to date indicates that the process water is being successfully contained, groundwater monitoring will continue to ensure there are no offsite or long-term effects,” Dee Ann said in an email to Associated Press.
The sinkhole – about 45ft in diameter – at Mosaic’s New Wales facility in the town of Mulberry was discovered by a company worker on August 27.
The sinkhole later caused the waste pond to drain, and the contaminated water has now seeped into the aquifer.
Aquifers are massive underground systems of porous rocks that hold water.
Nick Gordon has lost a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown.
A Georgia judge upheld the plaintiff’s case against Bobbi Kristina Brown’s boyfriend as he repeatedly failed to meet court deadlines.
The lawsuit alleged that Nick Gordon physically abused Whitney Houston’s daughter and took money from her estate without her permission.
Bobbi Kristina Brown died on July 26, 2015, at the age of 22, several months after being found unresponsive in a bath at her suburban Atlanta home.
David Ware, a lawyer for the Brown estate conservator, said outside court: “The court agrees with us, by striking Mr. Gordon’s answer that he is legally responsible for her death.”
No lawyer was listed for Nick Gordon in online court records.

Donald Trump’s campaign has acknowledged in a statement that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.
Donald Trump had been a leader of the “birther” movement that questioned Hawaii-born Barack Obama’s citizenship.
However, the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign now accuses his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton of introducing the “smear” during the 2008 Democratic nomination contest.
There is no evidence to link Hillary Clinton to the birthers.
In reaction Hillary Clinton tweeted that Barack Obama’s successor “cannot and will not be the man who led the racist birther movement”.
Donald Trump campaign’s statement signed by senior Trump advisor Jason Miller is far from an admission of error.
Instead, Jason Miller laid the genesis of the birther rumors wrongfully at the feet of Hillary Clinton and her 2008 presidential campaign team.
When they raised questions, Jason Miller said, it was “vicious and conniving” behavior. By broaching the topic three years later, Donald Trump had done a “great service” to the public and president, Jason Miller said.
The statement follows an interview with the Washington Post in which Donald Trump had declined to say Barack Obama had been born in the US, saying instead that he did not want to answer the question.
The claim is a conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was actually born in Kenya and is therefore ineligible to be president.
Reports in various US publications suggest it was circulated in 2008 by die-hard supporters of Hillary Clinton as it became clear that she was not going to win the Democratic nomination.
However, there is no evidence that Hillary Clinton or her then campaign had anything to do with it.
The claim enjoyed a revival with some supporters of Republican candidate John McCain as he fell behind Barack Obama in polls, the Fact Check website reported.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has hit out at a critical report by the House of Representatives intelligence committee.
The report rejected Edward Snowden’s view of himself as a whistleblower, and said he was a disgruntled employee whose actions did nothing more than help US enemies.
It comes a day after two rights groups launched a campaign for President Barack Obama to pardon Edward Snowden.
The White House has rejected the possibility of a presidential pardon.
The release of the report, two years in the making, also coincides with that of the movie Snowden, directed by Oliver Stone.
In a series of tweets, Edward Snowden dismissed the report’s findings, writing: “Their report is so artlessly distorted that it would be amusing if it weren’t such a serious act of bad faith.”
Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, has been living in Russia since 2013, when he gained notoriety for releasing thousands of classified documents that revealed mass phone and internet surveillance put in place after the 9/11 attacks.
Releasing a summary of its 36-page investigation into the case, the House committee said Edward Snowden had fallen out with his colleagues and lied about his background while at the NSA.
The report says that most of the material Edward Snowden leaked related to military secrets that had nothing to do with Americans’ privacy but were to “protect American troops overseas and… provide vital defenses against terrorists and nation-states”.
Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union launched their “Pardon Snowden” campaign on September 14, urging President Barack Obama to do so before he leaves office in January 2017.
According to Amnesty, no-one should be prosecuted for exposing human rights violations, which, it claimed, is what “indiscriminate mass surveillance of communications” amounts to.
The ACLU acts as Edward Snowden’s legal adviser, and called him “a great American who deserves clemency for his patriotic acts”.
Domingos Montagner has drowned in a river where the crew had been recording scenes for Brazil’s most popular soap opera, Velho Chico.
The 54-year-old played the leading role in Velho Chico, a soap opera named after the Sao Francisco River where he died.
One of Brazil’s best-loved TV actors, Domingos Montagner had gone for a swim with fellow actress Camila Pitanga after a day of shooting in the north-eastern state of Sergipe.
She said he was dragged away by the river’s strong currents.

Camila Pitanga cried for help but local people failed to act initially as they believed the drowning was a scene in the soap opera.
Authorities said there was little that anyone could have done.
In the soap opera, Domingos Montagner played a farmer who often fought off local gunmen. In one of those clashes, he was shot multiple times and appeared to drown in the same Sao Francisco River, but reappeared weeks later.
Police chief Antonio Francisco Filho told O Globo: “They thought they had chosen a safe spot to swim, but that is one of the most dangerous areas in the town of Caninde and usually avoided by locals.”
One person, on average, has drowned every year in the town since 2005, reports said.
Four hours after the incident, rescue teams found Domingos Montagner’s body underwater, some 984ft from where he drowned.
Domingos Montagner was born in Sao Paulo and had a career in the circus before becoming a TV actor, in 2008.
This was his 12th role on television. His first significant soap opera role was in 2011, and he had his film debut in 2012.
Domingos Montagner had been married for 14 years to actress Luciana Lima, with whom he had three children.
The news of the actor’s death has caused commotion in Brazil, where fellow actors and social media users have paid tributes to the actor.
The soccer team he supported, Corinthians, praised him also for his success as a handball player for the club’s affiliate in the 1980s.

Fiat Chrysler has decided to recall 1.9 million vehicles over an air bag defect that may be linked to three deaths and five injuries.
The defect may stop air bags deploying and seat belts tightening in a head-on crash.
The auto maker is recalling certain Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Lancia vehicles from 2010 to 2014.
In 2016, there have been a number of car industry recalls for serious air bag-related issues.
Most of the Fiat Chrysler cars being recalled are in the United States, but 224,860 were sold in Canada and Mexico and 284,051 were sold outside North America.
Models including the Chrysler Sebring, 200, Dodge Caliber, Avenger, Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs are part of the recall.
Fiat Chrysler said it would contact owners and replace the parts free of charge.
In June, Toyota recalled 1.4 million cars over faulty airbags.
Donald Trump is in “excellent physical health,” according to a letter from his doctor.
The Republican nominee released the letter following a recent physical examination by Dr. Harold N. Bornstein.
Donald Trump, 70, is listed as 6ft 3in and weighing 236lb.
The letter comes as Hillary Clinton returns to the campaign trail after time off with pneumonia, appearing briefly to reporters.

Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have faced public scrutiny over transparency about the state of their health.
“He takes a lipid lowering agent (rosuvastatin) and a low dose aspirin,” the letter said.
“He does not use tobacco products or alcohol.”
Donald Trump’s weight and height give him a body mass index of 29.5, according to US measurements, which is within the “overweight” range but close to the “obese” mark at 30.0.
The Republican discussed his health with talk-show host Dr. Mehmet Oz in a taped interview, which is set to air on September 15.
Donald Trump first revealed the letter, which is dated September 13, in his appearance on The Dr. Oz Show.
“I feel as good today as I did when I was 30,” Donald Trump said on the show, according to a clip.
Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterological specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, has cared for Donald Trump since 1980, according to the letter.
The note continues to detail parts of Donald Trump’s medical record, including that he was only in hospital once at age 11 for an appendectomy.
Although the letter provides some insight, it does not include Donald Trump’s detailed medical history.

According to a former death squad member, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the murder of political opponents while mayor of Davao.
During a Senate hearing, Edgar Matobato revealed he and others killed about 1,000 people over a 25-year period.
Edgar Matobato, 57, gave gruesome details of gangland-style hits, including feeding one victim to a crocodile.
Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman rejected the allegations, saying investigations into his time as mayor had gone nowhere.
Edgar Matobato said he was a member of the Davao Death Squad, a notorious vigilante group allegedly responsible for hundreds of killings.
He said: “Our job was to kill criminals like drug pushers, rapists, snatchers.”
Edgar Matobato also claimed that Rodrigo Duterte’s opponents were targeted too, including four bodyguards of a local rival for mayor, Prospero Nograles.
Victims would be shot or strangled, he said, with some disemboweled and dumped into the sea so fish could eat them.
He told the Senate panel he went from a witness protection program into hiding when Rodrigo Duterte became president, fearing for his life.
Edgar Matobato also alleged Rodrigo Duterte ordered the bombing of a mosque in retaliation for an attack on Davao Cathedral in 1993.
On this claim Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman, Martin Andanar, said: “I don’t think he is capable of giving those orders.”
Martin Andanar said the country’s Commission on Human Rights had failed to even prove the existence of the Davao Death Squad.
Prospero Nograles’ son Karlo, a Davao city representative, denied Eduardo Matobato’s account relating to his father’s bodyguards.
“I don’t know what this guy is talking about.
“I can only suspect that this guy is being manipulated by some people to only serve their own selfish interests,” Karlo Nograles wrote on Facebook.
The woman leading the Senate inquiry into extra-judicial killings, Leila de Lima, is a strong critic of Rodrigo Duterte and has been accused by him of having links to the illegal drug trade, something she denies.
Rodrigo Duterte became mayor of Davao in 1988, and his tough stance saw crime rates plummet, an approach he has vowed to replicate at national level.
Since his election this year more than 3,000 drug users and dealers have been killed amid international alarm over human rights violations.
Rodrigo Duterte has dismissed concerns over his drugs policies, calling UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon “a fool” and insulting President Barack Obama as, something he later said he regretted.
