Top Tips for Reinvigorating your Garden after Winter

Gazing out into your backyard can be a little depressing during the winter months. Once winter is over, you will want to change this by reinvigorating your garden and getting it ready for spring – a month full of life, colour and vivaciousness. This can make an enormous difference to how your home both looks and feels, plus it also provides you with a great space for relaxing or entertaining guests.

Spring Cleaning

Much like cleaning around the house, the first stage involves tidying the entire area. Put on your gloves and fill a large bag with debris, twigs, any dead plants and anything else unsightly. This will make a big difference straight away and you will now be ready to revive the garden.

Bringing the Lawn to Life

The lawn plays a huge role in how a garden looks, so you will need to pay special attention to this area. Start off by raking the lawn to remove thatch and to identify areas of snow mould or brown patches. Next, you will want to aerate compacted spots to allow the grass to breathe and grow. Finally, you will want to start weeding and make sure that you are pulling from the root to completely get rid of the weed.

Borders

Next, you will want to tidy the borders of your backyard as these can make a huge difference to how it looks. This could involve simply washing the fences and gates, or perhaps giving them a new lick of paint to really inject some colour into the backyard. You will also want to clean any tables or pavement areas, with rotary surface cleaners being the best way to do this. These are available from suppliers such as SGS.

In With the New

With the bleak winter now a distant memory, you will want to bring colour and life to your backyard. The best way to achieve this is to visit a garden centre and pick out a range of colourful and attractive new plant life, plus you may also find other decorative items to add some personality to your garden.

Create Areas for Relaxation

Finally, you will want to create an area for you to relax or socialise in. Bring out your garden table and chairs, invest in a bench, wheel out the barbeque and start enjoying your newly invigorated and beautiful backyard either with a good book or with a few friends round.

With these simple steps, your garden will quickly become your new favorite place to relax and somewhere that is full of colour and life.

Top 3 Ways to Increase Your Car’s Resale Value

0

Selling a car can be even more of a headache than buying one. How do you find the best buyer? And how do you get the best possible price? Often times, you just have to shop around to see who will make you the best offer, but before that you want to put your best foot forward. Here are the three most important things to do before trying to sell your car.

  1. Have Your Papers in Order

A full service record including MOTs is a big plus for many buyers, and an absolute necessity for others. And if you can prove that all of the repairs and services the car has undergone through its lifetime were at a franchised garage (that is one belonging to the manufacturer, or carrying their certification) then this can give the price a significant boost.

A full ownership history is also valuable in private sale—it won’t increase the value but it will establish a trust that will make clinching the deal easier.

  1. Repair Minor Faults

If the car has a few dents and scratches, but is still basically roadworthy, give some serious consideration to having them professionally repaired—the cost of the work will often be less than the difference it will make to the sale price.

This is doubly important if the car has any faults that affect the driving experience. Take your car for a test drive and watch out for any quirks you might have gotten used to. Also make sure to check all your warning lights and take appropriate action if any are lit up.

  1. Clean It

This may seem blindingly obvious, but the difference it makes to car valuations can’t be understated. Go all out, because getting your car to look as good as new may be easier than you expect.

If the car looks like it might need a new coat of paint, you’ll be surprised what a thorough waxing achieves. Make sure to clean or replace dirty interior mats, and use specially made headlight cleaning products—murky lights are seen as a clear sign of a beaten up old vehicle.

These are all pretty simple solutions but the difference they make will stagger you twice—once when you see the car, and again when you see the new price.

Obama’s pet dog Sunny ‘bites daughter’s friend on face leaving her permanently scarred’

About a week before his master left office, Sunny, a Portuguese Water Dog, bit a family friend just under her eye.

According to witnesses, the unidentified 18-year-old tried to give the dog a kiss, and the animal evidently interpreted her move as aggressive. After the animal was removed, White House physician Ronny Jackson attended to the victim by cleaning her wound and stitching up the large gash on her face. Reportedly, she may have a permanent facial scar as a result of the animal attack. The Obamas own two Portuguese Water Dogs — 4-year-old Sunny and 8-year-old Bo — who have never bit anyone before.

Some observers opined that the victim scared the dog, prompting the violent reaction.

Dog Bite Law

This incident underscores the fact that any animal can attack at any time for any reason, because Portuguese Water Dogs are generally known to be very family-friendly dogs that are especially good with children and for people with allergies.

Washington, D.C. basically has a modified one-bite rule, so unless the animal was “at large” when it attacked, victims must establish negligence to recover damages. Typically, this means that the owner knew the animal was dangerous and nevertheless decided to keep it. However, California is a strict liability state, so victims only have to prove cause to receive compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, and other economic damages, as well as their emotional distress, loss of enjoyment in life, and other noneconomic damages. Given that many victims are children, these noneconomic damages tend to be substantial, because animal attacks often traumatize children who are entirely unaccustomed to such unexpected aggression. Special rules apply to minors as well, as outlined below.

The broad law is probably one of the reasons that the Golden State leads the nation in terms of dog bite homeowners’ insurance claims (1,684 in 2015) and value of claims ($76 million in 2015). Police dogs, military dogs, and trespassers are the only exceptions listed in Civil Code 3342; otherwise, dog owners are fully liable for all damages “suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place.” According to Sherwin Arzani, a dog bite attorney in Los Angeles, CA, “If your dog bites someone in California, you can almost certainly expect to pay damages to the injured victim.”

Some municipalities and counties expand the strict liability rule even further, applying it to caregivers, custodians, veterinarians, and other non-owners. If there is no such law, victims attacked while animals are in a non-owner’s custody must usually either prove negligence, or a lack of ordinary care, or scienter (“knowledge”), meaning that the custodian must have known that the animal was dangerous.

Insurance Company Defenses

As the name implies, there is basically no defense to liability under a strict liability law, unless one of the limited exceptions applies. However, the measure of damages is a different matter, and this is where insurance companies concentrate their efforts.

Many people probably noticed how, in the above story, some observers are quick to blame dog bite victims for provoking or scaring the animals. However, under California law, provocation has a very specific meaning. The insurance company must prove that the victim intentionally provoked the animal to attack, usually by prodding it or using some other action. Words alone are normally insufficient, and non-violent actions that the dog misinterprets are nearly always insufficient as well. Moreover, very young children (usually those under age 5) cannot provoke dogs as a matter of law.

If the victim legally provoked the animal by inflicting pain that was so intense as to justify a violent response in the animal, the jury must divide fault on a percentage basis, such as 50-50 or 70-30 or whatever. Since California is a pure comparative fault state, the judge will then reduce the plaintiff’s damages by the proportion of contributory negligence.
In scienter and negligence cases, assumption of the risk might be a factor. To disprove negligence, the defendant must prove that the victim voluntarily assumed a known risk. If the attack occurred in a public place, the involuntariness prong is probably not present; if the victim did not actually know that the dog was dangerous, the defense is also inapplicable.

Melissa Earnest’s Defense of Barron Trump Becomes Viral

0

The social media frenzy was sparked when SNL writer Katie Rich posted a tweet just after Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony saying: “Barron Trump will be America’s <<first homeschool shooter>>.”

Donald Trump’s supporter Melissa Earnest posted a number of responses on her Facebook page including one long defense of Barron Trump in which she said: “Whether you like or dislike the Trumps – this is their 10-year-old son. He is still growing and words hurt.”

Her post has already been shared several million times.

Melissa Earnest, who describes herself on Facebook as “wife, mother, businesswoman” began her defense of Barron Trump by stating: “Do you see this child? This child’s life was changed forever when his father was sworn in as President of the United States of America yesterday.

“Long before his father, President Donald J. Trump, was sworn in – this child became the center of hateful online attacks. From a certain celebrity attempting to diagnose him with a neurological disorder with her degree from <<The University of Google>> to now, when a writer from Saturday Night Live decided to tweet saying that he would be the <<first homeschool shooter>>.”

Melissa Earnest concluded: “He is a child. He is to be respected and he is off limits!”

She first posted a report about Katie Rich’s tweet asking people to “go to Saturday Night Live’s Facebook and plague their page with comments”.

Although Melissa Earnest later posted another message saying: “It was suggested to me that I put the accounts out there for the world to see so that they could be messaged over and over. May I just say that no harassing of any form will be tolerated on this page nor will I partake.”

Katie Rich’s Twitter account was later made private and there were claims that the offending tweet had been removed. But the row continued.

Former White House child Chelsea Clinton waded in with a message that simultaneously supported Barron Trump and took a thinly-veiled swipe at his father.

Chelsea Clinton was 13 when her father was inaugurated.

She was mocked by both talk show host Rush Limbaugh and Saturday Night Live for her appearance.

Similar spats about Barron Trump have been going on across social media.

On Instagram, Modern Family actress Julie Bowen posted pictures of Barron Trump, who seemed occasionally distracted during his father’s inauguration ceremony. She posted: “I think Barron is on his Gameboy. Can’t say I can blame him.”

Julie Bowen’s post attracted a blast of criticism with people also leaving abusive messages on another one of her Instagram posts featuring a picture of her child.

The actress tweeted a response to one of her critics which said: “I love that Barron is a kid being a kid. My kids would be a horror show at a public event! Just trying to keep it light.”

President Barack Obama’s daughters were no strangers to social media abuse throughout their father’s terms in office.

Two years ago Sasha, then 13, and Malia, then 16, were advised in a Facebook post to “try showing a little class”.

The author was Elizabeth Lauten, a communications director for a Republican congressman who added in a reference to the length of the girls’ skirts: “Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.”

In the backlash, people tweeted Elizabeth Lauten’s boss, and the hashtag “#FireElizabethLauten” went viral. She posted an apology and later resigned.

Before the Obama girls, President George W. Bush’s 19-year-old twin daughters Jenna and Barbara made their own international headlines when they were cited by Texas police for underage drinking in 2001 when they first went to college.

In a recent letter to Sasha and Malia Obama, Jenna and Barbara Bush acknowledged the pressures that come with being in the spotlight at such young age. On leaving the White House, they reflected: “You won’t have the weight of the world on your young shoulders any more… make mistakes – you are allowed to.

“You have lived through the unbelievable pressure of the White House.”

Donald Trump Signs Executive Order to Pull Out of TPP

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The 12-nation trade deal was a linchpin of former President Barack Obama’s Asia policy.

Donald Trump said as he dumped the pact with a stroke of a pen: “Great thing for the American worker what we just did.”

The president also cut funding for international groups that provide abortions, and froze hiring of some federal workers.

Donald Trump’s executive order on TPP was largely symbolic since the deal has not been ratified by a divided US Congress.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump criticized the TPP as a “potential disaster for our country”, arguing it harmed US manufacturing.

Donald Trump’s first weekday of administration began with a flurry of executive orders, which allow him to bypass Congress by issuing legally binding directions, mostly of limited scope, to federal agencies.

The president also signed an order blocking foreign aid or federal funding for any nongovernmental organization that provides abortions abroad.

The so-called Mexico City policy was first established by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

It is typically rescinded by incoming Democratic presidents, including Barack Obama in 2009, and reinstated by Republican presidents.

Donald Trump also signed an executive action placing a hiring freeze on non-military federal workers.

Also on January 23, the new president pledged to “massively” cut regulations and taxes on companies, but impose “a very major border tax” if they move factories outside the US.

“All you have to do is stay,” he told executives from 12 companies including Lockheed Martin, Under Armor, Whirlpool, Tesla and Johnson & Johnson.

After meeting business leaders at the White House, Donald Trump pledged to lower corporate taxes to 15% or 20%, from the current 35%, and slash regulations by up to 75% if they keep jobs in the US.

“A company that wants to fire all of its people in the United States, and build some factory someplace else, and then thinks that that product is going to just flow across the border into the United States – that’s not going to happen,” he said.

Dow Chemical CEO Andrew Liveris told reporters afterwards he would take the president at his word.

He said: “He’s not going to do anything to harm competitiveness.

“He’s going to actually make us all more competitive.”

Donald Trump – whose protectionist rhetoric sent the US dollar falling – is due to meet labor leaders in the afternoon.

The Senate will meanwhile vote on his nomination of Mike Pompeo to be CIA director.

Rex Tillerson’s nomination as secretary of state was effectively guaranteed on January 23 as Senator Marco Rubio dropped his objections.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said it was “unquestionable” that Donald Trump’s inauguration “was the most watched” ever.

Although Ronald Reagan’s was top in terms of TV figures, attracting 41.8 million viewers, Sean Spicer pointed out that the 30.6 million who tuned in to see Donald Trump take the oath of office did not include the millions who watched the ceremony online.

Sean Spicer’s remarks followed Donald Trump’s stinging attack at the weekend on media reporting of attendance figures and the weather at his inauguration.

Second Passports – Don’t Leave Home Without Two!

0

Do not leave the house without one?

The smart traveler today does not leave home without 2 or 3 passports. That was the bottom line of a recent post in the New York Times titled“Taking the Second Passport?” It is not just for spies taking care of the benefits of traveling with different passports, 2nd citizenships as well as naturalization. In line with the post published in New Yorktimes, some people do not even know that they already have double nationality and therefore are eligible to have a 2nd passport from an overseas country. Other people are not aware that they can lawfully get second passport and citizenship programs by using an”Economic Citizenship” plan.

Passport

What’sthe Greatest Benefit of Second Citizenship?

For any sovereign person, the best edge is certainly the legitimate right to have a job without any restriction in different countries — a specific advantage of passports in the European Union. Furthermore, Dvorak says, having a 2nd passport is actually “a way of hiding exactly where the person has been,” when traveling to countries with soured associations — for instance among Israel and Arab-speaking nations.

How Would You Get A 2nd Passport?

For a step one, to get a 2nd passport, you must be a resident of the targeted country. When that’s achieved, the entire process of applying for a 2nd passport is comparatively easy. Obviously, it is like getting qualified for the 2nd citizenship which is the challenging part. But there are methods, even when you do not have Irish, Uk, German or Italian forebears (those are usually the countries considered to be most favorable in handing out passports to United States people based on ancestral roots). Israel, for instance, allows any person of Judaism history to use which is known as Aliyah, or even the ‘Law of Return.’This allowsgetting fast Israeli citizenship for any person of Judaism ancestral roots or someone who converts to Judaism.

The Case in Point

Ruth Yoffe is the second case in point mentioned in the New York times report who also has a 2nd passport. Yoffe is actually the founding father of Reloop Designs, a company which hires disabled individuals in Cambodia to make gift baskets from thewaste plastic material. Being a resident of America and New Zealand, she often goes throughout South Asian countries. “For plain security reasons, I usually try to travel and carry my visas with the New Zealand passport,” she mentioned. “On an airplane, I’d rather not be seen as an American if I get that choice, based on where I’m going.”

Although pricey, economic citizenship programs in many cases are useful for rich people who don’t have enough time or interest to hold back the 2 to 5 years which is required to establish dwelling in one more country and submit an application for citizenship by way of naturalization in one of the more generous countries for getting 2nd passports for example Dominican Republic Paraguay. On top of that, they have the benefit of being totally tax-free and never being hooked in paperwork or military support obligations.

Galaxy Note 7 Fire: Samsung Blames Battery Defects

Samsung’s investigation into its Galaxy Note 7 fiasco has found that the overheating and burning of the phones was caused by faults with their batteries.

The tech giant had axed its iPhone rival in October 2016 after an earlier botched recall and re-release.

The recall is thought to have cost $5.3 billion and was hugely damaging for Samsung’s reputation.

On January 23, the South Korean company said that neither software nor hardware were at fault, only the batteries.

Internal and independent investigations “concluded that batteries were found to be the cause of the Note 7 incidents”, the South Korean technology giant said in a statement.

Samsung said that errors both in design and manufacturing affected batteries by two different manufacturers.

According to the findings, the problems centered on insufficient insulation material within the batteries and a design that did not give enough room to safely accommodate the batteries’ electrodes.

The company said it was “taking responsibility for our failure to ultimately identify and verify the issues arising out of the battery design and manufacturing process”.

Samsung did not name the battery suppliers during their presentation, though last year had identified them as their affiliate Samsung SDI and Chinese company Amperex Technology.

The company said it did not plan to take legal action and that it accepted responsibility for asking the suppliers to meet certain specifications.

Launched in August 2016, Samsung’s Note 7 device was marketed as a large-screen top-end device and positioned as a rival to Apple’s iPhone.

However, in September, Samsung had to recall about 2.5 million phones after complaints of overheating and exploding batteries.

Samsung insisted that all replaced devices were safe. However, that was followed by reports that those phones were also overheating.

The company said there would be no repeat of the fires in future devices such as the upcoming S8.

“We look forward to moving ahead with a renewed commitment to safety. The lessons of the past several months are now deeply reflected in our processes and in our culture.”

Samsung also said it would not unveil its upcoming Galaxy S8 phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as had been expected, suggesting the flagship model’s launch may be later in the year.

The head of Samsung’s smartphone business, Koh Dong-jin said the phone would not get a launch event at the event in Barcelona in February unlike previous Galaxy S smartphones.

Storm Kills at Least 18 in Georgia and Mississippi

0

At least 18 people have been killed and many others injured by severe weather in Georgia and Mississippi, emergency officials say.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency in seven counties in the state, where 14 people have died.

Other 4 people were killed by tornadoes in Mississippi on January 21.

According to the National Weather Service, a “tornado risk” continued for Southern Florida.

It also warned of damaging winds and hail.

In a news release, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said that the 14 victims were in the southern Cook, Brooks, Dougherty and Berrien counties.

Most of the deaths occurred in Cook County, when a mobile home park was apparently struck by a tornado.

Cook County coroner Tim Purvis said numerous mobile homes had been “leveled” before dawn on Sunday in the park near the city of Adel. He said emergency teams were still searching for survivors.

Tim Purvis estimated that the park has about 40 mobile homes in total, and roughly half were destroyed.

Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement: “These storms have devastated communities and homes in South Central Georgia, and the state is making all resources available to the impacted areas.”

President Donald Trump said he had spoken to Gov. Nathan Deal and expressed his condolences for the loss of life.

In Brooks County, coroner Michael Miller said two people died when an apparent tornado tossed a mobile home around 100 yards into the middle of Highway 122.

Swathes of the south-eastern United States have been hit by storms over the weekend.

In southern Mississippi, four people died in the path of a tornado with winds above 136 mph.

More than 50 others were injured and about 480 homes were damaged, state officials said.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency issued advice on the best and worst places to shelter from a tornado on January 21, advising locals in the path of a tornado to cover themselves with blankets or a mattress for protection.

Gambia: At Least $11 Million Missing After Yahya Jammeh Flies Into Exile

0

An adviser to Gambia’s new President Adama Barrow has said that more than $11 million is missing from the state coffers following the departure of long-time leader Yahya Jammeh.

Mai Ahmad Fatty said financial experts were trying to evaluate the exact loss.

Luxury cars and other items were seen being loaded on to a Chadian cargo plane on the night Yahya Jammeh left The Gambia.

Yahya Jammeh flew into exile on January 21, ending his 22 years in power.

The former leader had refused to accept election results but finally left after mediation by regional leaders and the threat of military intervention.

President Adama Barrow remains in neighboring Senegal and it is not clear when he will return.

However, West African troops entered the Gambian capital, Banjul, on January 22 to prepare for his arrival.

Cheering crowds gathered outside the State House to watch soldiers secure the building.

The Senegalese general leading the joint force from five African nations said they were controlling “strategic points to ensure the safety of the population and facilitate… Mr. Barrow’s assumption of his role”.

Mai Ahmad Fatty told reporters in the Senegalese capital Dakar that The Gambia was in financial distress.

“The coffers are virtually empty,” he said.

“It has been confirmed by technicians in the ministry of finance and the Central Bank of the Gambia.”

Mai Ahmad Fatty said Yahya Jammeh had made off with more than $11 million in the past two weeks alone.

He said officials at The Gambia’s main airport had been told not to let any of Yahya Jammeh’s belongings leave the country.

Reports said some of Yahya Jammeh’s goods were in Guinea where he had stopped on his journey into exile.

Yahya Jammeh is reported to now be in Equatorial Guinea, although authorities there have not confirmed it.

The former president had initially accepted Adama Barrow’s election win on December 1st, but later alleged “irregularities” and called for a fresh vote.

The move was internationally condemned and the UN-backed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum for him to quit or be removed by force.

Donald Trump’s Administration in Fresh War of Words with Media

Donald Trump’s team has become embroiled in a fresh war of words with the media.

On January 21, President Trump had condemned media reporting of the number of people attending his inauguration.

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said there was “an obsession… to de-legitimize this president. We’re not going to sit around and take it.”

However, photos show more people attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009.

Reince Priebus said on Fox News Sunday that the “media from day one has been talking about de-legitimizing the election”. He said Donald Trump’s presidency would fight such coverage “tooth and nail every day”.

The latest row was mainly sparked by the inauguration figures.

There were no official estimates. President Trump said during a visit to the CIA on January 21 that it “looked like a million and a half people”, but provided no evidence. He called reporters “among the most dishonest human beings on Earth” for saying it was far lower.

Donald Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer outlined figures amounting to 720,000 people in Washington’s National Mall, despite also saying that “no-one had numbers” for the inauguration.

Sean Spicer also said it was the “largest audience to ever witness an inauguration – period – both in person and around the globe”.

Many outlets, using photos of the National Mall showing the difference in numbers attending the 2009 inauguration and Donald Trump’s, hit out at Sean Spicer’s statements.

The New York Times denounced “false claims” and described the statements as a “striking display of invective and grievance at the dawn of a presidency”.

Both CNN and ABC News went into detail to refute Sean Spicer’s claims.

Donald Trump’s aide Kellyanne Conway also criticized the media in a feisty exchange on NBC.

Kellyanne Conway was challenged by Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press to say why Sean Spicer’s first appearance had been to “utter a probable falsehood”.

“If we are going to keep referring to our press secretary in those type of terms, I think we are going to have to rethink our relationship here,” she said.

Pressed on Sean Spicer’s claims, Kellyanne Conway said he had been presenting “alternative facts”.

“Alternative facts are not facts they are falsehoods,” Chuck Todd replied.

Kellyanne Conway insisted there was “no way to really quantify crowds” and, taking offence at a laugh from the reporter, said: “You can laugh at me all you want. It’s symbolic of the way we are treated by the press the way you just laughed at me.”

She also highlighted another issue that caused friction with the media – the Time Magazine reporter who incorrectly reported that a bust of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr. had been removed from the Oval Office. The reporter later apologized for the error.

On January 22, Donald Trump tweeted about TV ratings of the inauguration, saying that 31 million people had watched, 11 million more than four years ago.

The president also referred to January 21 protests that saw millions in the US and hundreds of thousands around the globe take to the streets in some 600 demonstrations against his presidency.

Donald Trump’s initial tweet said he was “under the impression that we just had an election”, asking: “Why didn’t these people vote?”

A later tweet said that “peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy”.

Pope Francis: “Is Too Early to Judge President Donald Trump”

Pope Francis has said that is too early to judge President Donald Trump, but he warned against a rise in populism and the dangers of allowing political crises to usher in dictators like Hitler.

In a wide-ranging interview with Spain’s El Pais, the pontiff condemned the use of walls and barbed-wire to keep foreigners out.

Donald Trump has caused controversy with his comments on Mexican immigrants and his plans for a wall to keep them out.

Asked if he was worried about the rise of populism in Europe and the US, Pope Francis said: “Crises provoke fear, alarm. In my opinion, the most obvious example of European populism is Germany in 1933.

“Germany is broken, it needs to get up, to find its identity, a leader, someone capable of restoring its character, and there is a young man named Adolf Hitler who says: <<I can, I can.>>

“And all Germans vote for Hitler. Hitler didn’t steal the power, his people voted for him, and then he destroyed his people.”

On President Trump, Pope Francis said he would “wait and see”.

“I don’t like to get ahead of myself nor judge people prematurely. We will see how he acts, what he does, and then I will have an opinion,” the pontiff added.

Donald Trump and Pope Francis publically disagreed during the presidential campaign, with the Pope appearing to question Trump’s Christian faith over his plans to build a border wall with Mexico.

India Train Crash Kills at Least 36 in Andhra Pradesh

Thirty six people are reported dead and many others injured after a train derailed in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

JP Mishra, the head of East Coast Railway, said that nine coaches and the engine left the tracks near Kuneru station in Vizianagaram district.

Many people are still trapped in the wreckage and rescuers warn that the death toll could rise.

It is not yet clear what caused the train to derail.

The area where the accident occurred is known as a Maoist hotbed.

JP Mishra said the injured had been taken to two nearby hospitals.

National railway spokesman Anil Saxena said emergency teams had worked through the night to try to locate survivors.

The crash happened on January 21 as the train was on its way from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha state.

Train crashes are not unusual in India where much of the railway equipment is out of date.

In November 2016, more than 140 people were killed in a derailment in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state.

Donald Trump Attacks Media for Dishonestly Reporting of Inaugural Crowd Size

0

Donald Trump has accused the media of dishonestly reporting the size of the crowd at his inauguration on January 20.

The president said the crowd had reached the Washington monument as he spoke at the US Capitol, despite photographic evidence to the contrary.

Later, his White House press secretary said it had been “the largest audience to ever see an inauguration, period”.

On January 21, millions of demonstrators in the US and around the globe protested against Donald Trump’s new administration.

The largest rally was in Washington, which city officials estimated to be more than 500,000-strong. By most estimates, it surpassed the crowd at January 20 inauguration.

The protest’s aim was mainly to highlight women’s rights, which activists believe to be under threat from the new administration.

Donald Trump did not mention the protests during a bridge-building visit to the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, on January 21 but instead turned on the press.

The president accused the media of inventing a feud between him and the intelligence community and he called reporters “among the most dishonest human beings on earth”.

Donald Trump said TV footage and photos of his inauguration had painted an inaccurate picture.

“It looked like a million and a half people” there on Friday, he said, rubbishing media reports that there were as few as 250,000 people.

Donald Trump also said the crowd extended all the way back to the Washington Monument, although this claim is contradicted by aerial shots from the day.

Later, White House press secretary Sean Spicer berated reporters at a news conference over photographs that had shown large, empty spaces during the ceremony.

“This was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period. Both in person and around the globe,” Sean Spicer said in a fiery statement.

“These attempts to lessen the enthusiasm about the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”

In addition to the photographic evidence, Washington’s Metro system said trips were down on previous inaugurations.

According to TV views were less than Barack Obama’s and Ronald Reagan’s first inaugurations.

Sean Spicer, who did not take questions, added: “There’s been a lot of talk in the media about the responsibility to hold Donald Trump accountable, and I’m here to tell you it goes two ways. We’re going to hold the press accountable as well.”

Outgoing CIA chief John Brennan accused Donald Trump of “a despicable display of self-aggrandizement” over the statement at Langley.

His former deputy, Nick Shapiro, said in a statement carried by CNN: “Former CIA Director Brennan is deeply saddened and angered at Donald Trump’s despicable display of self-aggrandizement in front of CIA’s Memorial Wall of agency heroes.

“Brennan says that Trump should be ashamed of himself.”

Last week, John Brennan called on Donald Trump to be more “disciplined” in what he said and warned him not to underestimate Russian intentions.

Donald Trump’s visit had sought to mend relations with the intelligence community after weeks of doubting their conclusions about alleged Russian interference into the US election.

“I love you, I respect you,” he said, adding that he was “1,000%” behind the spy agency.

The president said the media had invented a feud between them, although in a recent row over a leaked dossier that alleged the Kremlin held compromising material on him, he had likened the actions of intelligence agencies to Nazi Germany.

Donald Trump tweeted: “Intelligence agencies should never have allowed this fake news to <<leak>> into the public. One last shot at me. Are we living in Nazi Germany?”

Yahya Jammeh Leaves The Gambia to Begin a New Life in Exile

Yahya Jammeh has left The Gambia in the wake of elections that ousted him after 22 years in power.

The former president boarded a plane to Guinea and from there will travel on to exile in Equatorial Guinea, regional group ECOWAS says.

Yahya Jammeh was defeated in December’s election by Adama Barrow but went on to challenge the results.

Adama Barrow has been in Senegal but says he will return to The Gambia soon.

Marcel de Souza, president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said the military operation that had sent West African troops into The Gambia in support of Adama Barrow, was now ended, although some would remain to ensure security.

Adama Barrow has been in neighboring Senegal for days and was inaugurated as president in the Gambian embassy there on January 19.

Troops from several West African nations, including Senegal, had been deployed in The Gambia, threatening to drive Yahya Jammeh out of office if he did not agree to go.

Yahya Jammeh’s decision to quit his country came after talks with the presidents of Guinea and Mauritania.

Guinea’s President Alpha Conde was with Yahya Jammeh and his wife on the plane that left capital Banjul on January 21.

In an address on national TV, Yahya Jammeh, who had once said he would rule The Gambia for a billion years, said he would stand down and that it was “not necessary that a single drop of blood be shed”.

He said: “I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation with infinite gratitude to all Gambians.”

Yahya Jammeh had at first accepted defeat in the election but then reversed his position, declaring a 90-day state of emergency and blaming irregularities in the electoral process.

Women’s March: Millions Rally Against Donald Trump in US and Worldwide

Millions of anti-Trump demonstrators have taken to the streets of major cities in the United States and around the world to rally against the new president.

There were more than 600 rallies worldwide just one day after Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The protest’s aim was principally to highlight women’s rights, which activists believe to be under threat from the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump used his first full day in office to visit the CIA headquarter.

President Trump said he was “1,000%” behind the CIA’s employees and also accused the media of being dishonest in its reporting of the size of the crowd at his inauguration.

He did not refer to today’s protests.

The biggest US rally was in Washington DC, which city officials estimated to be more than 500,000-strong.

This far exceeded the 200,000 that had originally been expected by organizers of the Women’s March on Washington.

By most estimates, the Washington rally also surpassed the crowd at yesterday’s presidential inauguration.

The protesters in Washington heard speeches from Scarlett Johansson, America Ferrera, Ashley Judd, Gloria Steinem and Michael Moore among others.

A planned march to the White House proved impossible as the entire route was filled with demonstrators.

Interim DC Police Chief Peter Newsham told Associated Press: “The crowd stretches so far that there’s no room left to march.”

During his speech, Michael Moore ripped up a copy of the Washington Post, saying: “The headline was <<Trump takes power>>. I don’t think so. Here’s the power. Here’s the majority of America right here. We are the majority.”

Madonna also made an appearance, swearing several times in a speech carried live by major TV networks.

She said: “Yes, I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”

America Ferrera told the crowd: “We march today for the moral core of this nation, against which our new president is waging a war.”

Huge crowds were reported at other protests across the US.

In Chicago, some 150,000 turned out that a planned march had to be called off and the event declared a rally. Streets were also overflowing in LA.

Huge crowds were also reported in New York, Miami, Seattle and Boston, some of the venues for about 300 nationwide protests.

Many women wore knitted pink “pussy hats” – a reference to a recording that emerged during the election campaign in which Donald Trump talked about groping women.

In London, between 80,000 and 100,000 people had taken part at the rally, the organizers say. Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol were among the other UK cities holding protests.

Anti-Trump marches took place earlier in Australia, New Zealand and in several Asian cities.

Several thousand women and men joined a rally in central Sydney, with a similar number in Melbourne.

Women’s March Sydney co-founder Mindy Freiband told the crowd: “Hatred, hate speech, bigotry, discrimination, prejudicial policies – these are not American problems, these are global problems.”

In Europe, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam, Geneva, Budapest, Prague and Berlin were among the cities that took part.

Donald Trump’s first full day in office began with an inter-faith service at Washington National Cathedral before visiting the CIA’s HQ in Langley, Virginia.

In a speech there, President Trump told about 400 employees: “There is nobody who feels stronger about the intelligence community and the CIA than me.”

During the election campaign, Donald Trump had sharply criticized the intelligence agencies over their stance on alleged Russian involvement.

Donald Trump also talked up his yet-to-be-confirmed nominee for CIA chief, Mike Pompeo.

In one of his first steps, President Trump ordered government agencies to ease the “economic burden” of the Affordable Act, known as ObamaCare.

His team also quickly overhauled the White House website. The revamp replaces Barack Obama’s policies with Donald Trump’s new agenda.

The new administration lists only six issues on the website – energy, foreign policy, jobs and growth, military, law enforcement and trade deals.

Critics complained that it made no mention of civil rights, healthcare, climate change or LGBT rights.

Amsterdam Diamond Heist: Seven People Arrested in The Netherlands and Spain

Seven people have been held on suspicion of involvement in a €75 million ($80 million) diamond heist in 2005 at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, police in the Netherlands say.

The seven Dutch nationals, five men and two women, were arrested in Amsterdam and Valencia in Spain.

The armed gang, disguised as airport workers, stole the diamonds as they were about to be put onto a plane.

Some of the stones were recovered from a getaway car but stones worth an estimated €40 million are still missing.

According to correspondents, the theft was one of the world’s biggest ever jewellery heists.

The diamonds and other jewellery were stolen in a high security area of the airport after the thieves forced their way into a KLM armored car.

The seven were detained in raids on January 20 and 21 on suspicion of robbery and money laundering.

The diamonds were about to be flown to Antwerp, Europe’s diamond capital, when the robbers struck.

President Donald Trump Signs First Executive Orders

Taking his first steps as president, Donald Trump signed an executive order which targets the ObamaCare, the signature health care reforms of ex-President Obama.

Donald Trump’s proclamation ordered agencies to ease the economic burden of the healthcare laws.

In his inaugural address President Trump pledged to put “America first” and to end the “American carnage” of abandoned factories and rampant crime.

Later, about 200,000 people are due to join a Women’s March in Washington.

The Women’s March organizers say they want to highlight racial and gender equality and other issues perceived to be under threat from Donald Trump’s administration.

Similar marches are already taking place in Australia and New Zealand and many others are planned around the world.

Donald Trump’s team quickly overhauled the White House website to include his pledge to roll back Barack Obama’s strategy on climate change.

Shortly after taking office as the 45th US president, Donald Trump sent his Cabinet nominations to the Senate.

President Trump also signed a waiver to allow retired General James Mattis to serve as defense secretary, even though he left the military less than the required seven years ago.

Gen. James Mattis, whose appointment has been approved by the Senate, was later sworn in by Vice-President Mike Pence.

Mike Pence also swore in John Kelly as head of Homeland Security.

The revamped White House website replaces Barack Obama’s policies with Donald Trump’s new agenda.

The new administration lists only six issues on the website – energy, foreign policy, jobs and growth, military, law enforcement and trade deals.

Critics point out that it makes no mention of civil rights, LGBT rights, healthcare or climate change.

One of Donald Trump’s key election pledges was to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said President Trump’s executive order was for federal departments to “minimize the economic burden”‘ of the act, but he gave no details.

Donald Trump also signed a proclamation declaring a national day of patriotism.

Asked about his first day, which was capped by a dance with First Lady Melania to My Way, Donald Trump said “it was busy but good – a beautiful day”.

Gambia Crisis: Yahya Jammeh Announces He Is Stepping Down on National TV

Gambia’s outgoing President Yahya Jammeh says he will step down, after refusing to accept defeat in elections.

Yahya Jammeh made the announcement on national TV, saying it was “not necessary that a single drop of blood be shed”.

The statement followed hours of talks between Yahya Jammeh and West African mediators. He gave no details of what deal might have been struck.

Yahya Jammeh has led The Gambia for 22 years but was defeated in December’s election by Adama Barrow.

Adama Barrow has been in neighboring Senegal for days and was inaugurated as president in the Gambian embassy there on January 19.

Troops from several West African nations, including Senegal, have been deployed in The Gambia, threatening to drive Yahya Jammeh out of office if he did not agree to go.

Yahya Jammeh’s decision to quit came after talks with the presidents of Guinea and Mauritania.

He said: “I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation with infinite gratitude to all Gambians.

“I promise before Allah and the entire nation that all the issues we currently face will be resolved peacefully.”

Shortly before the TV address, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz said that a deal had been struck and that Yahya Jammeh would leave the country. He gave no further details.

Yahya Jammeh was given an ultimatum to leave office or be forced out by UN-backed troops, which expired at 16.00 GMT on January 20.

The deadline was set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional grouping backed by the UN.

Yahya Jammeh had at first accepted defeat in the election but then reversed his position and said he would not step down.

He declared a 90-day state of emergency, blaming irregularities in the electoral process.

The electoral commission accepted that some of its early results had contained errors but said they would not have affected Adama Barrow’s win.

Yahya Jammeh had vowed to stay in office until new elections were held.

El Chapo Guzman Extradition: US Prosecutors Want to Seize $14BN of His Assets

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has pleaded not guilty in the US to charges that he ran the world’s largest drug-trafficking operation.

The Mexican drug lord was extradited from Mexico on January 19.

US prosecutors want an order to seize $14 billion of the head of the Sinaloa cartel’s assets.

In 2015, El Chapo Guzman famously escaped from a high-security prison through a tunnel – while being recorded on CCTV. He had fought against extradition since his recapture in early 2016.

Federal authorities have sought El Chapo Guzman for more than 20 years. He faces 17 charges including drug trafficking, illegal firearms use, money laundering, and smuggling cash across the border.

Ahead of his first appearance in a New York court, prosecutors revealed that they would seek the civil forfeiture of El Chapo Guzman’s assets to the amount of $14 billion – an indication of the extent of his empire.

US attorney Robert Capers said: “He’s a man known for no other life than a life of crime, violence, death and destruction. And now he’ll have to answer to that. That’s who Chapo Guzman is.”

If convicted, El Chapo Guzman faces a mandatory life sentence.

Robert Capers also revealed that prosecutors were not aware the extradition was happening in advance.

He said: “Guzman’s story is not one of a do-gooder or a Robin Hood or even one of a famous escape artist who miraculously escaped from Mexican prisons on multiple occasions.

“Guzman’s destructive and murderous rise as an international narcotics trafficker is akin to that of a small cancerous tumor that metastasized and grew into a full blown scourge.”

His ability to evade capture made El Chapo Guzman stand out from other drug gang leaders.

His first high profile escape was in 2001 when it was reported – despite some doubts – that he had escaped from a maximum security prison by hiding in a laundry basket.

El Chapo was recaptured thirteen years later. But in 2015, he walked out of his cell through a cleanly-dug tunnel, while under video surveillance.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto had initially resisted extraditing El Chapo Guzman to the US, insisting that he should face justice at home.

However, after El Chapo Guzman was recaptured in January 2016, President Pena Nieto changed his mind on extradition and ordered officials to speed up the process.

El Chapo Guzman was extradited suddenly on January 19, arriving in New York on a flight from Ciudad Juarez.

Donald Trump Becomes 45th US President

Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 45th US president after taking over from President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the Capitol Hill.

The new president has delivered his inaugural address before leading a parade to the White House.

He has painted a bleak picture of a broken country speaking of abandoned factories, crime and a failed education system as problems of the past, pledging that his presidency would bring about change.

President Trump said on the steps of the Capitol: “This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”

Thousands of Donald Trump supporters travelled across the country to witness the occasion from the National Mall.

The moment marks the end of an improbable journey for the billionaire after a campaign marked by controversy.

Shortly after the ceremony Donald Trump was seen signing his first official actions as the 45th president.

He sent his Cabinet nominations to the Senate as well as a signed a proclamation for a national day of patriotism, according to Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Donald Trump also signed into law a waiver allowing retired Marine General James Mattis, his pick for defense secretary, to serve in the post.

In his inaugural address, President Trump promised to be the voice of the “forgotten people”, ignored by Washington politicians.

Today, he said, was “the day the people became rulers of this nation again”.

“I will fight for you with every breath left in my body and I will never ever let you down,” said President Trump after Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath.

“America will start winning again, winning like never before.

“We will bring back our jobs, bring back our borders, bring back our wealth and we will bring back our dreams.”

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence waved goodbye as the Bidens and Obamas left the Capitol.

Barack and Michelle Obama held hands as they boarded a military helicopter that took them to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Barack Obama delivered remarks to staff and supporters before he and his wife flew to Palm Springs, California, for vacation.

He told a crowd they “proved the power of hope” and that “this isn’t a period, it’s a comma in the continuing story of building America”.

The historic moment drew congratulation messages from dignitaries around the world including Pope Francis, who said he was praying Donald Trump’s decisions would be guided by the “rich spiritual and ethical values” that have shaped America’s history.

Hillary Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump in a dramatic upset in November’s election, attended the ceremony with her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Former presidents and first ladies, including George W. Bush and his wife Laura as well as Jimmy Carter, were in attendance.

The only absences were 92-year-old George Bush Senior, who is in hospital being treated for respiratory problems, and his wife Barbara.

Members of Congress were also in attendance, although more than 50 House Democrats had refused to attend the ceremony in protest.

Donald Trump takes power at a time when the country appears to be deeply divided. He enters the presidency with historically low approval ratings.

He has vowed to roll back many of his predecessor’s policies, including repealing Barack Obama’s signature health care law and building a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Authorities arrested nearly 100 people protesting against the inauguration, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Many were apprehended for “vandalism and destruction of property”, said spokesman Lieutenant Sean Conboy.

Sean Conboy also said two police officers were hurt during clashes.

Earlier, about 150 protesters dressed in black marched through Washington, smashing windows and rolling rubbish bins into the street to form blockades.

The Women’s March on Washington on Saturday – for racial and gender equality, and other issues perceived to be under threat from Mr Trump’s administration – is expected to draw about 200,000 people.

Meanwhile in New York, thousands of people attended a rally where dozens of celebrities and politicians voiced their concerns about the president-elect.

Some spectators had waited for hours, although crowd numbers seemed to be lower than some other recent inaugurations.

Barack Obama’s Goodbye Letter to Americans

0

Outgoing President Barack Obama released a farewell letter to the country on January 19, just one day before he hands over the White House to Donald Trump.

My fellow Americans,

It’s a long-standing tradition for the sitting president of the United States to leave a parting letter in the Oval Office for the American elected to take his or her place. It’s a letter meant to share what we know, what we’ve learned, and what small wisdom may help our successor bear the great responsibility that comes with the highest office in our land, and the leadership of the free world.

But before I leave my note for our 45th president, I wanted to say one final thank you for the honor of serving as your 44th. Because all that I’ve learned in my time in office, I’ve learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man.

Throughout these eight years, you have been the source of goodness, resilience, and hope from which I’ve pulled strength. I’ve seen neighbors and communities take care of each other during the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. I have mourned with grieving families searching for answers — and found grace in a Charleston church.

I’ve taken heart from the hope of young graduates and our newest military officers. I’ve seen our scientists help a paralyzed man regain his sense of touch, and wounded warriors once given up for dead walk again. I’ve seen Americans whose lives have been saved because they finally have access to medical care, and families whose lives have been changed because their marriages are recognized as equal to our own. I’ve seen the youngest of children remind us through their actions and through their generosity of our obligations to care for refugees, or work for peace, and, above all, to look out for each other.

I’ve seen you, the American people, in all your decency, determination, good humor, and kindness. And in your daily acts of citizenship, I’ve seen our future unfolding.

All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into that work — the joyous work of citizenship. Not just when there’s an election, not just when our own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime.

I’ll be right there with you every step of the way.

And when the arc of progress seems slow, remember: America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We the People.’ ‘We shall overcome.’

Yes, we can.

Gambia Crisis: Yahya Jammeh Gets Ultimatum to Cede Power

0

The ECOWAS has given Gambian incumbent President Yahya Jammeh a final opportunity to relinquish power after Senegalese troops entered his country.

Yahya Jammeh has been given until noon on January 20 to leave office or be forced out by UN-backed regional forces.

Troops have been told to halt their advance until the deadline passes.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is acting in support of Adama Barrow, who was sworn in as the new Gambian president on January 19.

Adama Barrow’s legitimacy as president, after winning last month’s election, has been recognized internationally.

Last-ditch mediation talks, led by Guinea’s President Alpha Conde, were due today. Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is on his way to Banjul, and Alpha Conde is reported to be with him.

Chairman of the ECOWAS commission, Marcel Alain de Souza, said that if the meeting with Alpha Conde proved unsuccessful, military action would follow.

“If by midday, he [Yahya Jammeh] doesn’t agree to leave The Gambia under the banner of President Conde, we really will intervene militarily,” Marcel Alain de Souza said.

ECOWAS said that its forces had encountered no resistance after entering The Gambia on January 19.

Troops from Senegal and other West African countries crossed into The Gambia after an initial deadline for Yahya Jammeh to stand down passed without his resignation.

Adama Barrow, who remains in Senegal, has said that he will not return to Gambia’s capital, Banjul, until the military operation has ended.

The threat by the West African regional bloc ECOWAS to remove Yahya Jammeh by force is supported by the 15-member UN Security Council, although the council has stressed that a political solution should be the priority.

In his inaugural speech at the Gambian embassy in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, President Adama Barrow ordered all members of The Gambia’s armed forces to remain in their barracks.

Any found illegally bearing arms would be considered “rebels”, he said.

Amid the crisis, the UN refugee agency reported that more than 45,000 people had fled The Gambia for Senegal so far in 2017.

More people could leave if the situation was not resolved, the UNHCR said.

After first accepting defeat in the election Yahya Jammeh reversed his position and said he would not step down. He declared a 90-day state of emergency, blaming irregularities in the electoral process.

The electoral commission accepted that some of its early results had contained errors but said they would not have affected Adama Barrow’s win.

Yahya Jammeh has said he will stay in office until new elections are held.

Remaining in power would also give Yahya Jammeh protection against prosecution for alleged abuses committed during his rule.

El Chapo Guzman Extradited to US

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been extradited to the US, the Mexican government announced on January 19.

The notorious Mexican drug lord arrived in New York on a flight from Ciudad Juarez.

El Chapo Guzman, who could face life in a US prison, is wanted on charges of drug trafficking and smuggling vast amounts of drugs into the country.

The leader of the Sinaloa cartel was facing two extradition requests – one from California and another from Texas.

In 2016, El Chapo Guzman was moved to a prison in Ciudad Juarez, which lies just across the border from El Paso in Texas, but authorities at the time denied the transfer was a precursor to extradition.

He has been fighting to stay in Mexico but his appeals were rejected.

El Chapo Guzman was under close watch, having previously broken out of two Mexican high-security jails.

He is now expected to appear in a US federal court in Brooklyn on January 20.

A federal indictment in the Eastern District of New York, where El Chapo Guzman is expected to be prosecuted, accuses him of overseeing a trafficking cartel with thousands of members and billions of dollars in profits laundered back to Mexico, the Associated Press reports.

It says El Chapo Guzman and other members of the Sinaloa cartel employed hit men who carried out murders, kidnappings and acts of torture.

Donald Trump Promises to Unify America at Lincoln Memorial Event

President-elect Donald Trump has promised to unify America as he addressed cheering supporters at Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration concert on the eve of his presidential inauguration.

Speaking on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, Donald Trump also pledged to bring change.

Among attendees at the two-hour event were his family, actor Jon Voight and Soul Man singer Sam Moore.

President-elect Donald Trump earlier laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.

Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration on January 19 was open to the public and featured performances by country stars Toby Keith and Lee Greenwood.

In brief remarks at the end of the concert, Donald Trump said: “We’re going to unify our country.

“We’re going to make America great for all of our people. Everybody, everybody, throughout all of our country. That includes the inner cities.”

Donald Trump’s supporters have been streaming into Washington DC, and he reminded them that many had doubted the campaign’s chances of success.

“They forgot about a lot of us,” he said.

“On the campaign, I called it the forgotten man and the forgotten woman. Well, you’re not forgotten anymore.”

Pledging to bring back jobs, build up the military and strengthen the border, Donald Trump added: “We’re going to do things that haven’t been done for our country for many, many decades.

“It’s going to change, I promise you. It’s going to change.”

Donald Trump’s first stop on January 19 was at his Trump International hotel, located just blocks from the White House.

Donald Trump appeared with his wife Melania at a luncheon for members of his incoming administration.

Melania Trump briefly spoke, telling the crowd: “Tomorrow we’re starting the work.”

Donald Trump told the crowd in the presidential ballroom: “We have a lot of smart people. I tell you what, one thing we’ve learned, we have by far the highest IQ of any cabinet ever assembled.”

He hinted that Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets NFL team, would be US ambassador to the UK.

After the welcome concert, Donald Trump spent the night at Blair House, the presidential guest residence located just steps from the White House.

He is due to be sworn in at noon on Friday, January 20.

Despite Donald Trump’s appeal for unity, billionaire investor George Soros launched a stinging attack on him.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, George Soros labeled Donald Trump “an imposter, a conman and a would-be dictator”.

Donald Trump has nominated all 21 members of his cabinet as well as six other roles that require Senate confirmation, according to his team.

The Republican-controlled Senate is expected to vote on January 20 to confirm General James Mattis, the defense secretary nominee, and retired General John Kelly, the pick for Homeland Security.

Donald Trump has asked about 50 senior Obama administration officials to stay on until they are replaced, spokesman Sean Spicer told a news conference.

They include Brett McGurk, the special envoy to the US-led coalition fighting the so-called Islamic State, as well as Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work.

Down the road at the White House, President Barack Obama spent his last day in office with the daily briefing and lunch with Vice-President Joe Biden.

Barack Obama also spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in his final conversation with a foreign leader as president, according to the White House.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Angela Merkel’s husband, Joachim Sauer, also joined the call.
