Rowan Atkinson, famed for his Mr. Bean television shows and films, is recovering in hospital after crashing his McLaren F1 supercar near the Cambridgeshire village of Haddon, according to the British media. Police and firefighters both said that a vehicle crashed late Thursday close to Haddon, a village about 135 kilometres north of London.

Rowan Atkinson, 56 comedian, also known for the Blackadder historical comedy shows, was expected to be discharged on Friday after treatment for a shoulder injury, the Daily Mirror reported.

Mr. Bean – Rowan Atkinson is in a stable condition in hospital and was expected to be discharged on Friday afternoon.

Cambridgeshire Ambulance Service confirmed the actor had suffered a “minor shoulder injury” as a result of the accident.

According to reports, Rowan Atkinson was driving a McLaren F1 supercar when it spun around several times, ran into a tree and a lamppost and caught fire.

Firefighters said the driver was not trapped and he was taken to hospital. Rowan Atkinson walked away from the wreckage and was with a passing motorist until emergency services arrived.

“We were called to the scene of a single vehicle collision on the A605 near Haddon at about 7.30pm yesterday,”

a Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said on Friday.

“The driver of the vehicle, a man, was taken to Peterborough City Hospital.”

East of England ambulance service said :

“We were called to a single vehicle road traffic collision at 7.30 tonight on the A605 at Haddon.”

“A man was taken to hospital in Peterborough with “a minor shoulder injury”, a spokesman added.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said:

“We can confirm that there was a single vehicle road traffic collision at around 7.30pm on the A605.”

Firefighters arrived on the scene to put out the blaze.

The actor Rowan Atkinson was taken to hospital after his car crashed, reports said.

Atkinson’s spokesman could not immediately be reached.

Rowan Atkinson was driving his McLaren F1 supercar – one of the world’s fastest road cars. The McLaren F1 car he was driving is one of the fastest road cars ever made, with a top speed of 230mph. Only 106 were ever made.

Atkinson, known to be a car enthusiast, recently topped the leader’s board on Top Gear’s star in a reasonably priced car segment. The star’s love of fast cars is well documented.

He told presenter Jeremy Clarkson he was keen on racing and was currently driving a 1964 Ford Falcon.

Rowan Atkinson had only just finished filming the latest edition of the spy spoof movies Johnny English and was due to attend the last day of editing in preparation for the film’s release in September.

Fellow comedians are just outraged about the MDA decision to drop Jerry Lewis as host and chairman of the Telethone.

The yesterday, Aug. 4, Muscular Dystrophy Association announcement that Jerry Lewis won’t host MDA Labor Day Telethon raised a lot of question marks among fans and fellow comedians. All of them are just as outraged about the decision to drop Jerry Lewis as the former host of MDA Telethon TV show.

Jamie Masada, the longtime owner of the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, said he’s received a dozen messages from comedians, including Dane Cook and Dave Chappelle, expressing anger over the way Jerry Lewis had been dropped from the MDA annual show.

“He’s the face of the telethon,” Masada said.

“Without him, there’s no show.”

A Jerry Lewis’ spokeswoman said the star had no comment on his exit from the telethon. But others rallied to Lewis’ defense.

The decision represented an about-face from the MDA’s announcement in May that Jerry Lewis would host the telethon for a final time this year, and would appear in the closing moments of future telethons to sing his trademark number, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“Get the cure for muscular dystrophy, then I’m fine.”

According to MDA insider sources:

“The organization made an executive decision to part ways with Lewis, who, by and large, discredited the very industry that made him who he is,”

“And because the telethon is one of the biggest television events of the year, they couldn’t take a chance at more bad publicity, especially from its pitchman and host.”

Jerry Lewis, 85 comedian, started hosting MDA charity events in 1952.

Since the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon first aired in 1966, according to a June report by ABC News, Lewis calculated that after 61 years the telethon has raised $2.6 billion. Since 1966 when the telethon became what it is today – the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon – until 2010 Jerry Lewis has been the face of the Muscular Dystrophy Association .

The telethon is now called the MDA Labor Day Telethon.

The marathon telecast was once a must-stop venue for comedians and entertainers. During the height of its popularity, the telethon featured performances from show business luminaries, including Sammy Davis Jr., Liberace, the Supremes, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra.

In recent decades, the event’s appeal faded with younger viewers who found the format somewhat dated. Indeed, the telethon model itself as a fundraising vehicle lost much of its force, particularly with the rise of the Internet, which emerged as a more potent generator of donations.

Even before ousting Jerry Lewis, the MDA was poised to scale back the telethon from more than 20 hours to as few as six, primarily because stations were threatening to drop all or part of the telecast.

The telethon’s earning power had declined in recent years. According to public tax filings, the telethon brought in $56.4 million in gross receipts in 2005.

But in 2009, the latest year for which records are available, the tally dropped to $45.6 million.

The MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) has not announced a replacement for Jerry Lewis.

The MDA said it did not expect to name a new host this year and that the Sept. 4 event would be shepherded by entertainment personalities Nigel Lythgoe, Jann Carl, Alison Sweeney and Nancy O’Dell.

Muscular dystrophy is a group of more than 40 disorders that affect more than 1 million Americans. The maladies, sometimes referred to as neuromuscular disorders, weaken the muscles and eventually result in profound disability. The most common form of the disease is Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which affects about 1 in 3,500 males worldwide.

As we previously said Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill was dealing with more important condition than a mild dehydration.

On Monday they interrupted the summer tour through the United States because “vocal issues and exhaustion,” that Caleb Followill was suffering from. The Kings of Leon‘s representative declared to Us Weekly: “The reason for the cancellation of the tour is Caleb is under doctor’s orders for vocal rest. They feel terrible about cancelling. They look forward to getting back on the road at the end of September.”

“We are so sorry to say Kings of Leon are canceling their entire US tour due to Caleb Followill suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion. The band is devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break. Unfortunately, the US dates cannot be rescheduled due to the band’s international tour schedule. […] The band will resume touring in Canada at the Rogers Center in Vancouver, BC, on September 28th. That show was originally schedule for September 14th. ” stated the announcement posted on their website.

Family has to come 1st.” Before this he declared (on Saturday) that “there are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be address”.

An insider of the group said

“They are trying to get Caleb to go to rehab. It is mostly for alcohol. …they ended up canceling the whole tour… he drinks like a fish.”

Another source said Kings of Leon never debated Caleb’s drinking as a problem because they all use to consume a little alcohol during their travels.

Caleb, who recently married Lily Aldridge (Victoria’s Secret model) , has been dealing with this problem for some time.

“It’s true. Caleb’s drinking is out of control and they are trying to get him into rehab. It’s a dark demon he has been fighting for awhile.” said other source.

Sources say Caleb becomes nervous about singing in front of the crowds and drinks alcohol to relax.

“There’s a running joke in the band that Caleb can’t go on stage without having a cocktail first.” said an insider.

Let’s hope Caleb will be strong enough and he will get adequate help to solve this problem and he will continue to sing with Kings of Leon. A lot of music talents were lost because of drug and alcohol addiction.

Virginia Tech campus lockdown was lifted Thursday at 2:41pm – latest update

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech campus lockdown was lifted Thursday afternoon after a thorough police search for a person carrying a gun was not successful. The police released a press statement at 3:15pm about the Virginia Tech armed gun man.

Precisely the same Virginia Tech campus was the scene of the most harmful mass killing by a solitary gunman in U.S. history – the April 16, 2007, firing spree by Seung-Hui Cho which killed 33 individuals and injured 25 other people prior to the gunman committing suicide.

This time Virginia Tech responded extremely fast so as not to be criticized for reacting too slow, like it happened in the last case.

Virginia Tech’s website posted a warning at 9:37AM this morning warning to stay inside and call police for help.

“Person with gun reported near Dietrick. Stay inside. Secure doors. Emergency personnel responding. Call 911 for help.”

“The campus alert is lifted. There will continue to be a large police presence on campus today,” the Virginia Tech News website said in a notice posted at 2:41 p.m. “Police have not received nor discovered additional information about a person possibly carrying a weapon beyond that reported this morning.”

The 2,600-acre campus, was locked down completely at 9:37 a.m. after three teenage girls informed the law enforcement authorities they had spotted a suspect man wondering on campus carrying what appeared to be a weapon covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. The girs were attending a Higher Achievement Program camp on campus. [googlead tip=”patrat_mare”]

“He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.”, Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” as Larry Hincker, associate VP for University press relations, put it, the university asked students and employees to stay inside and secure doors. For the rest of the day classes were canceled.

Police officers checked the grounds and discovered nobody fitting that description.

“They gave us a good description. We felt it was best course of action to issue a campus alert,” Flinchum said.

“I think the girls believed what they reported. The officers believed they (the girls) believed what was reported and that’s the information they went with.”

Flinchum informed us the witnesses reported seeing the suspect near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility. This facility is very close to the dorm where the mass shootings happened in 2007.

Richard Tagle, Higher Achievement CEO, mentioned several 9 to 14 teens were on campus for the camp and Thursday was the final day.

Virginia Tech’s Website was very informative throughout the whole situation, continually updating people on campus. The University was fined by the federal authorities in Match after a court ruling that administrator violated campus safety laws by waiting too long to inform the employees and the students that there was a probable threat after the first two students were killed in 2007. The killings took place in West Ambler Johnston Hall, which is a dormitory facility near the dining hall.

Virginia Tech University waited more than two hours before sending out an email that day, at the same time Cho – the killer – was already chaining the door shut for a classroom building where he killed an additional 30 students and himself.

There was also an alert in 2008, when a cartridge coming from a nail gun made some sounds similar to gunfire, again near the dormitory. This was the first time the new alert system was activated after the shooting in 2007. This system includes sending text messages and emails as well as other methods to warn the students and faculty members of potential danger.

It’s not illegal to carry a gun on campus grounds. “A public university generally cannot prohibit open or concealed carry of a firearm on campus grounds,” Virginia attorney general’s office said. Any university can ban the carrying of guns inside campus buildings or at public events. Virginia Tech University and other universities cannot ban gun owners who have valid permits for carrying a concealed gun, even inside campus buildings.

Wherever there are some exotic, original and dangerous delicacies, there are people willing to taste them. The reason is quite obvious: simply because they exist it’s worth to try them.

You are what you eat, they say. If I eat a fish I’ll become one? Definetly not, but there is some chance to become… dead instantly.
Fugu or puffer-fish is an expensive sashimi dish. This deadly delicacy is popular in Japan, but prohibited in Europe. There are a few restaurants in US and in Korea where this “Russian roulette of sushi” is served. The internal organs of this fish contain tetrodotoxin, therefore it has to be prepared carefully, or else… it is possible to end up paralyzed and expired in a very short time.

Despite its notoriety, fugu is not the only life-threatening dish, neither the most dangerous, nor the most commonly served deadly delicacy. Stonefish produce venom, but when it’s cooked, it loses its potency. If it’s served raw (sashimi dish Okoze) its venomous dorsal fins are eliminated. Fugu and silverstripe blaasop do not secrete venom, but they are toxic because of bacteria in their diets. Their internal organ have to be removed carefully prior serving.

Echizen kurage is an enormous, poisonous jellyfish that lives in swarms in the Japan waters. Like fugu or silverstripe blaasop the toxic parts have to be attentively eliminated and the jellyfish has to be properly cooked for safe consumption, as one of the (potentially) deadly delicacies, of course.

Blood clams are native to waters around the world and are cultivated in Southeast Asia.
The redness that gives these cockles their name is due to a high level of hemocyanins.
Blood clams, considered one of the most tasteful Chinese delicacies, are flavored with a fermented tofu (fulu) sauce. If it’s not boiled enough, there are some risks that hepatitis A, E, viruses, typhoid, and dysentery bacilli could remain present.

The giant bullfrog, that grows to the size of a cat and contains enough poison to be lethal, is a delicacy in Namibia. The Namibians eat the entire giant bullfrog except for the internal organs. If it is eaten prematurely (“before the third rain”) can cause urethritis or acute renal failure. Locally this frog-induced disease is known as Oshiketakata.

San nak ji (raw baby octopus) is served in Korea. The octopus is dismembered, sesame oil is added, and immediately the tentacles are brought to the table. Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica. This fruit look like a bulb and has the appearence and taste of scrambled eggs when cooked. It’s often eaten as breakfast. The time has to be right for that meal. Ackee can cause extreme nausea if consumed when it’s not ripe enough. It contains hypoglycine. The effects are critical: quickly lowering one’s blood sugar and ensuring violent illness or death. The condition caused by inadequate use is called “Jamaican vomiting sickness” and can bring even death to children.

Like ackee, eating cassava is a dietary habbit in the tropics. In Africa and South America cassava is used to bake breads, ground into pastes and fried into cakes. The root contains enough cyanide to kill. If is not washed and prepared properly, it can have bad consequences.

Jerry Lewis said on May that this year would be his last year doing the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Labor Day Telethon.

Now that’s not happening, according to R. Rodney Howell, the chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s board. Mr. Howell also said in a statement that Jerry Lewis had been “released” from his position as national chairman of the association, but did not explain why. Representatives for Jerry Lewis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Muscular Dystrophy Association said,

“Jerry Lewis is a world-class humanitarian and we’re forever grateful to him for his more than half century of generous service to MDA. We will not be replacing him as MDA national chairman, and he will not be appearing on the Telethon.”

MDA did not say who would replace Jerry Lewis as the host of the 24 hour event.

This announcement came a few weeks before the telethon, which Jerry Lewis has hosted since 1966. This May Jerry Lewis said he was retiring from the show, a television staple, but he had planned to appear on it this year. But while Jerry Lewis fans won’t be able to see him on this year’s telethon, the Encore cable channel announced today that on October 22 it would offer the premiere of “an original documentary” about him.

September the 5th, the day after that program, I will have an international press conference with press from Reuters and London and China and Taiwan and all over the world, and I will have plenty to say about what I think is important. Marg Helgenberger, 52, who has portrayed investigator Catherine Willows on the show, told reporters gathered in California for the annual fall TV previews she plans to leave at the end of the upcoming 12th season of what CBS is calling the most watched TV series in the world.

“I was planning on leaving after last season,”

Marg Helgenberger said, adding that producers asked her into staying for the next season so they could better script her exit.

Due to Marg’s mother’s struggle against breast cancer for the last 27 years and her survival, she and Alan decided to get involved in the fight against breast cancer and started an annual “Marg and Alan’s Celebrity Weekend” in Omaha, Nebraska in 1997. The event is held for 3 days per each year and usually includes a two-day celebrity golf tournament at Dodge Riverside Golf Club and a cancer-survivor celebration at Harrah’s Casino.

Her marriage to Alan did not last forever. They separated in 2008 and finally divorced in 2010.

Virginia Tech is on lockdown today with reports of a gunman on the campus

“This campus experienced something terrible 4 years ago,”

Campus spokesman, Larry Hincker said at a press conference.

“Strictly as an abundance of caution we are going to keep the campus under alert status and ask people to stay indoors.”

9:09 a.m – Three students attending the “Higher Achievement” camp at the Blacksburg, VA, campus reported seeing a man holding what seems to be a handgun, according to Virgnia Tech Police Chief ,Wendell Flinchum.

“The juveniles were interviewed…officers confirming that there information is credible and at that point we decided to issue the alert,” Flinchum said.

“We have not had any further reported sightings. We have not had any reports of anyone suspicious or anyone that fits this description.”

The man was described by police as 6” tall, light brown hair and was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He did not have facial hair or glasses. In addition, police said that the campers told them the man was shielding the gun with a cloth. Flinchum also said that the man was not pointing or shooting the weapon.

9:37 a.m.: A message was posted on the university’s web site alerting students that there was a gunman near Dietrick Hall. Dietrick Hall is a three floors building, more than 92,000 square foot dining facility on the campus. Students have been adviced to stay indoors.

“Even the construction zone has come to a halt. The whole construction crew is gone. There is no traffic, no movement, no anything,” Virginia Tech communications officer Lynn Davis told CNN soon after the alert was issued.

Some of the professors who were conducting classes at the time of alert have kept their students in their classrooms.

Virginia Tech police are working with several surrounding police units including the Virginia State Police, the Blacksburg Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for campus surveillance.

AstraZeneca today announced that AXANUM, a fixed dose combination of 81 mg low-dose ASA (acetylsalicylic acid) and 20 mg esomeprazole (Nexium), has received positive agreement for approval in 23 European Union member countries and in Norway.

Esomeprazole, which is the active ingredient in the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) Nexium, is approved for the risk reduction of peptic ulcer development in low-dose ASA patients and is the only PPI approved for the risk reduction of re-bleeding in peptic ulcer bleed patients.

AXANUM is indicated for prevention of cardiovascular (CV) events such as heart attack or stroke, in high-risk CV patients in need of daily low-dose ASA treatment and who are at risk of gastric ulcers.

Low-dose ASA (commonly known as aspirin) is recommended mainstay therapy for patients with high-risk for cardiovascular events. About one third of these patients are also at increased risk of gastro-duodenal ulcer. Low-dose ASA further increases the risk for gastric ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. In fact, the most common reason for stopping low-dose ASA treatment is upper gastrointestinal problems. The consequences of interrupting low-dose ASA treatment can be severe, increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke as early as eight to 10 days later.

[googlead tip=”vertical_mare” aliniat=”stanga”] The first half of “The White Shadow”, the earliest known surviving feature film on which Hitchcock has a credit was discovered by the National Film Preservation Foundation at the New Zealand Film Archive.

So far, the specialists found the first three reels of the six-reel film made in 1923. No other copy of the movie is known to exist.

The White Shadowis a “wild, atmospheric melodrama” starring Betty Compson in dual roles as twin sisters, one angelic and the other “without a soul”. The film was made when Hitchcock was just 24 years old.

The White Shadow was directed by Graham Cutts, and Alfred Hitchcock is credited as writer, assistant director, editor and art director.

According to Annette Melville, Foundation Director, the reels of “The White Shadow” were found among films donated to the archive by the family of New Zealand projectionist and collector Jack Murtagh. “The White Shadow” was among the many silent-era movies salvaged by Hastings projectionist Jack Murtagh. After his death in 1989, the highly flammable nitrate prints were sent to the Film Archive for safekeeping by his grandson Tony Osborne.

“At the time, people said the plot was improbable. I’m putting a polite spin on it. Many said it was ridiculous,”

Melville said.

“It’s a totally crazy, zany plot with soul migration back and forth and all these improbable meetings.”

The surviving reels will be preserved at Park Road Post Production in Wellington. The Hitchcock film is just one of the treasures uncovered, including John Ford’s Upstream. They all owe their survival to Mr Murtagh’s passion for early cinema.

A restored print of “The White Shadow” will be shown September 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences headquarters in Beverly Hills. David Sterritt, chairman of the US-based National Society of Film Critics and author of The Films of Alfred Hitchcock, said the film’s discovery was one of the most significant developments in memory for scholars, critics, and admirers of Hitchcock’s extraordinary body of work. The “lost” films would be preserved over the next three years in partnership with the US National Film Preservation Foundation, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, George Eastman House, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art and UCLA Film & Television Archive and made available in the United States.

Copies of the films would also be publicly available in New Zealand.

Alfred Hitchcock died in 1980, aged 80, after more than five decades of film-making.

Shark Week began on Sunday, July, 31 with a premiere, “Great White Invasion”, about a horde of great white sharks that were swimming along the beaches from South Africa to Australia, and near the coast of California.

Discovery Channel broadcasted Shark Week for the first time in 1987, on July 27. In 2000, 6 millions viewers, from United States, and from Canada, received 3D Pulfrich glasses in order to see an episode that had 3D segments. That episode was about an extinct giant shark.

Now this television program series is transmitted in over 70 countries. The target for this show is the average persons, and its purpose is educational. The aim is to make people to know about the sharks, and to convince them that this animals need to be protected. It’s about conservation and preservation of the nature.

Sharks are a type of fish. They have a highly streamlined body and a full cartilaginous skeleton. Sharks live in every seas and are ordinary down to depths of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft). They generally do not live in freshwater.
Five centuries ago the sharks were called “sea dogs” by mariners. The name “shark” first came into use in 1569. Sir John Hawkins’ sailors exhibited one in London and refer to the large sharks of the Caribbean Sea by using the word (shark).
Despite of the general belief that sharks are only instinctual creatures, some studies showed that many species possess curiosity, great problem-solving skills, and social skills.

The Shark Week is aired every year, usually in July or August. This year it will end on Friday, August, 5.

It is a good opportunity to learn and see new and interesting things about the sharks.

Belgian Malinois beaten by the dog trainer

[googlead tip=”vertical_mare” aliniat=”dreapta”] Ryan Matthews, the head trainer and owner of Off Leash Dog Training in Loveland, Colorado, has been arrested Saturday and charged Monday with aggravated cruelty to animals – severely beating a Belgian Malinois, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The allegations involve a Belgian Malinois that was reported by a witness to have been severely beaten.

The Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois) is a breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog rather than as a separate breed. These dogs are popular in use of police departments, as are German Shepherds.

Like all Belgian Shepherds, the Belgian Malinois is a medium-sized and square-proportioned dog in the sheepdog family. The Belgian Malinois has a short mahogany coat with black overlay. It has black erect ears and a black muzzle. It has a square build in comparison to the German Shepherd.

The witness reported she saw Ryan Matthews strike and kick the Belgian Malinois several times and even dog a “body slam.”

The person called police on July 17, two days after witnessing the alleged abuse.

Larimer County Humane Society investigators obtained a video surveillance taken inside the kennel that confirmed allegations of the beating.

Investigators found blood on the carpet and a hole in the wall, which supports the witness testimony that Matthews slammed the Belgian Malinois’ muzzled nose into the sheetrock wall, causing the hole.

The dog trainer denied that he ever hit or kicked dogs during training, and a veterinarian found no neurological or skeletal abnormalities on the dog, according to the arrest affidavit.

Telomeres, the complex structures that protect the end of chromosomes, of peripheral blood cells are significantly shorter in patients with familial breast cancer than in the general population. Results of the study carried out by the Human Genetics Group of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), led by Javier Benitez, to be published in open-access journal PLoS Genetics on July 28th, reflect that familial, but not sporadic, breast cancer cases are characterized by shorter telomeres. Importantly, they also provide evidence for telomere shortening as a mechanism of genetic anticipation, the successively earlier onset of cancer down generations.

Mutations in two DNA repair genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, characterize some, but not all, instances of hereditary breast cancer. Non-BRCA1/2 breast cancer families are heterogeneous, suggesting the existence of other genes conferring susceptibility. The group has investigated the role of telomere length in hereditary breast cancer based on previous information suggesting, first, that short telomeres and subsequent genomic instability contribute to malignant transformation; second, that genetic anticipation occurs in breast cancer families and, third, that telomere shortening is associated with anticipation in other genetic diseases. By analyzing telomere length differences between mothers and daughters from breast cancer families, the authors demonstrated that genetic anticipation is associated with a decrease in telomere length in affected daughters relative to their mothers.

The results allowed the authors not only to conclude that women carrying BRCA1/2 mutation have chromosomes with short telomeres, but also to describe for the first time that genetic anticipation in breast cancer could be explained by telomere shortening. In addition, the study expands the field of research concerning genetic predisposition to breast cancer to include genes involved in telomere maintenance. The significance of generational changes in telomere length has interesting potential clinical applications in the management of familial breast cancer, and could be extended to other hereditary cancer syndromes.
