50 miners have been trapped in a coal mine in the city of Sanmenxia in Henan province, China, after a “rock burst”, according to officials.
Four miners were killed and fifty more are missing after the accident, which happened late on Thursday in the city of Sanmenxia.
Chinese media reported that the rock burst – an explosion caused by the sudden release of built-up pressure – happened shortly after an earthquake.
Reports said that hundreds of Chinese miners die every year in pit accidents.
The industry is one of the most dangerous in the world, and is notorious for its lax safety standards.
Earlier this week a gas explosion at a mine in neighbouring Hunan province killed 29 people.

However, Chinese officials insist the country’s record is improving, and say they have taken action by closing many illegal mines.
A spokesman for the state-run Yima Coal Group, which runs the Sanmenxia mine, told the AFP news agency an “intense search” was going on for the missing miners.
Local safety officials said 75 miners had been working in the pit at the time of the explosion.
14 miners had managed to escape and other four had been confirmed killed.
Seven injured miners were brought to the surface earlier on Friday as rescuers continued to those left trapped by the rock blast that occurred on Thursday evening, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Six had minor injuries but one was seriously hurt. At least 200 workers were digging a small rescue tunnel about 1,650 feet deep to try to reach the trapped miners, the People’s Daily newspaper’s website said. The structural status of the mine and the conditions of the miners were not known.
The Qianqiu Coal Mine belongs to Yima Coal Group, a large state-owned coal company in Henan, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its website.
Luo Lin, the head of China’s State Administration of Work Safety, said a magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurred near the mine shortly before the “rock burst” was reported.
The phenomenon occurs when settling earth bears down on mine walls and cause a sudden, catastrophic release of stored energy. The exploding chunks of coal and rock, or the shock waves alone, can be lethal.
The survival of the trapped miners depends on the intensity of the rock explosion and the rescuers’ ability to provide ventilation to them, a local official told The Associated Press.

Greater Manchester Police issued pictures of the robbery today and it emerged the muggers might have deliberately targeted the women because they had the baby with them.
The incident happened at just after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, when the two women were walking back after shopping in Bolton town centre.
The mother was carrying a number of shopping bags, while the grandmother was pushing the pram and had both women’s handbags hung over her shoulders.
The women were walking down a footpath leading to the Sandyhills area, when two men crept up behind them.
The grandmother felt a blow to her head and screamed as she fell to the floor, causing the pram to topple over onto its side.
The muggers pulled at the handbags and managed to get them over the woman’s shoulders. The young woman grabbed hold of one of the bags and managed to wrestle it back from one of the yobs. But they ran off with the other handbag.
Detective Inspector Stuart Wilkinson from Greater Manchester Police said: “These were the actions of two desperate individuals who had no regard whatsoever for the wellbeing of these two women or the young baby they were with.
“As you can see from the CCTV, it is lucky that the baby was strapped into the pram and wasn’t injured during this robbery.”

The incident is one of several recent close calls in the area, where a small pod of humpback whales has been surface lunge-feeding on anchovies unusually close to shore.
They’ve become a major draw for kayakers and boaters and at least one kayaker has been capsized, and a sailboat was struck by a whale.

This circus atmosphere has led to an enforcement presence in an attempt to keep people at a safe distance from the potentially dangerous leviathans.
“We had our enforcement guy out on the Harbor Patrol boat yesterday trying to clear people away from the whales,” Paul Michel, superintendent for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, told the Santa Cruz Sentinel on Wednesday.
“We were out there again today on the water but of course the whales moved off. Once the bait fish went away the small pod dispersed. Wherever there is food they will be, so they could come back and we will keep enforcement going through the weekend.”
Officers with the California Department of Fish and Game and Santa Cruz Harbor Patrol also have been on the water cautioning boaters and kayakers, explaining that the whales are protected by federal law and harassing them in any way can draw fines of between $2,500 and $32,000.
People for the most part were being cooperative.
Humpback whales, which can measure to 50 feet and weigh 40 tons, are easy to locate because while feeding, they herd giant schools of anchovies to the surface, and birds diving on the bait fish give away the presence of whales. The car was found abandoned on the side of a road near her home with a flat tyre, reported the Dyersburg State Gazette.
Karen Swift’s father Gary Johnson, 67, told ABC she could have got a flat tyre and decided to leave the car and walk home when something happened to her.
Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box told WREG:
“I think the most major thing is to look at is the last known location where we knew she was.”
Karen Swift has two sons in college and two daughters aged seven and nine.
Karen Swift’s cell phone is also missing and police said it was last used at about 5:00 a.m. on Sunday when she accessed the internet on the device.
Police are working with the phone company to pinpoint its last location. DAvid Swift has not been named as a suspect in the case.

The unseasonable snowstorm has been blamed for at least 19 fatalities, mostly due to slippery roads but also from unvented toxic fumes in homes where people were running alternative power sources, such as gas generators and propane stoves.

Officials across New England pleaded with residents to exercise extreme caution when using such devices, as two more deaths were blamed on carbon monoxide poisoning on Tuesday in Massachusetts.
A 57-year old man, a 22-year-old woman, and two dogs perished from toxic fumes in a home in Palmer, Massachusetts in an incident officials said was related to the storm.
The source was a propane canister with a heating attachment that was running in the home for many hours.
Massachusetts Fire Marshall Stephen Coan said:
“Heaters like this need a tremendous amount of ventilation to be able to be used – and quite frankly, they shouldn’t be used indoors.”
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said on Wednesday that western and central Massachusetts suffered a “tremendous amount of damage” and 215,173 customers are still in the dark.
In the immediate aftermath of the weekend storm, some 700,000 customers had lost power in the state.
In Gill, Massachusetts, Colleen Sculley said she has been without power since Saturday. She and her husband are using a wood stove to keep the house warm for their two toddlers.
“It’s only bad at nighttime when it’s dark,’ she said, adding that the toddlers stay close by. “They don’t want to play far away even when we have candlelight out for them.”
In Connecticut, where more than 550,000 customers remained affected, customers in many towns likely would not see power return until Sunday, Connecticut Light & Power said.
Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy asked that towns and cities open warming centers in local fire stations and encouraged people to check in on neighbors, especially the elderly.
The unseasonable snowstorm caused more major damage to the electric infrastructure in hard-hit New Jersey than did Hurricane Irene, utility companies said.
Counties such as Bergen, Essex, Passaic and Union suffered the biggest blows.
Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), the state’s biggest electric power provider said: “A larger number of individual service lines damaged as a result of falling tree limbs.
“Repairing the significant number of single lines from the poles to customers’ homes and businesses pose the greatest challenge with this storm.”
In New Hampshire, about 86,000 customers still had no power, mainly in the southern tier around Nashua and Manchester and in the nearby mountains, said Colin Manning, spokesman for New Hampshire’s governor’s office.
Power outages also included more than 130,000 customers in New Jersey, at least 60,000 in Pennsylvania and at least 100,000 in New York.

Occupy Oakland demonstrators blocked operations at the city’s port and blocked traffic on Wednesday in demonstrations against economic inequality and police brutality and marred by scattered vandalism.
There were reports saying that the group declared victory after managing to close down the city’s port, US’s fifth busiest , after an evening of mayhem on the streets.
Two protesters, a man and a woman, were injured as a Mercedes Benz struck them as they blocked the roadway.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the driver of the Mercedes was questioned by police and permitted to leave, much to the ire of protesters.

The protest by some 5,000 people fell short of paralyzing the northern California city that was catapulted to the forefront of national anti-Wall Street protests after an Iraq war veteran was badly wounded during a march and rally last week.
According to officials, only around 5% of city workers took the day off work.
Perhaps frustrated at their inability to disrupt city business, Occupy Oakland protesters on the second march of the day turned violent, smashing windows at a Chase bank branch a few blocks from the city’s downtown.
Graffiti was also painted on the bank. Employees tried in vain to close up the broken windows with boards and other materials, while one private security guard looked on helpless.
Several windows at a Wells Fargo branch were also smashed. The bank’s front sign and its ATM was smeared with graffiti.
A separate group of protesters attacked Wholefoods smashing windows and throwing paint on the storefront.
The word “strike” was painted in large letters across the Wholefood store’s front windows shortly before 03:00 p.m., an employee at a 7-Eleven across told NBC.
Helicopter video above the scene showed black-clad Occupy Oakland protesters attacking the store and forcing it to shut early.

The Occupy Oakland movement’s leaders called the violent demonstrators “anarchists” and said they were not part of the movement.
Meanwhile, several buses filled up with protesters as they geared up to disrupt operations at the port.
The day’s events in Oakland had begun with a rally outside City Hall that drew more than 3,000 people who spilled into the streets and disrupted the downtown commute.
Occupy Oakland protesters hung a large black banner that read: “Occupy Everything, DEATH TO CAPITALISM.”
The crowd included students, families with young children and many people wearing labour union T-shirts. “Shut down the 1 percent. We are the 99 percent,” the protesters chanted.
Oakland let city workers use vacation or other paid time to take part, but only about 5% took the day off.
Earlier protesters broke off from the rally to picket at nearby banks. All three banks located within blocks of the plaza were closed, though that didn’t stop protesters from chanting and waving signs outside.
At a Citibank branch, more than a dozen protesters blocked the entrance, some with fake $100 bills taped across their faces. They held signs with messages such as “Share the Billions with the Millions.”
About 200 people chanted outside a Wells Fargo branch, where graffiti was scrawled on the wall. The messages read “The 1 percent won’t back down” and “Who’s robbing who?”
Further away from the rally, vandals shattered a Chase bank branch and splattered ink all over an ATM. Someone later taped a note to the shattered glass that read: “We are better than this. … Sorry, the 99 percent.”
In front of the Oakland Public Library, about three dozen parents brought toddlers and school-age children for a stroller march in a “children’s brigade.”

A senior intelligence expert in Germany said: “He is on the money on this. And I personally have it on authority from two previous presidents of the BND that Putin was a sexual player during his time in Dresden.”
The interpreter agent, a Baltic Russian with German roots identified only as Lenchen Sch., became a pal of Lyudmila Putin and visited her at the flat at 101 Raderbergerstrasse she shared with her husband in the city.

Chief Tim Jayroe said he has not determined the identities of the people in the video nor whether any crimes were committed, according to Msnbc.

A Facebook page entitled Don’t Re-Elect Judge William Adams was set up yesterday and already has 6,000 followers.
Hillary Adams, now 23, has now tweeted that she was sorry she posted the video.
Hillary Adams wrote this afternoon: “I’m feeling some regret for publishing the video because to ruin my own father is heavy indeed. But I really want him to seek help.”

“Lay down or I’ll spank you in the F***ing face.”
Calls to Judge William Adams’ office in Texas went unanswered.
The police department confirmed it would be making an announcement shortly.
In a court judgement last October, Judge William Adams said that a child’s statements “amounted to no evidence” despite the fact his words had been confirmed by third party witnesses and recorded on video several times. The young person had also been interviewed by a child psychologist who believed the child.

In a legal statement, sworn under penalty of perjury, Mariah Yeater told a California court that Justin Bieber propositioned her on October 25 of last year, when she was 19 and he was 17, after his concert at L.A.’s Staples Center.

The actress pleaded no contest May 11 to a misdemeanor grand theft charge involving a necklace priced at $2,500 that was taken from a Venice jewellery store.
Lindsay Lohan was placed on three years probation and ordered to spend 120 days in jail and complete the 480 hours of community service to which she had been previously sentenced for violating her probation in a 2007 misdemeanor DUI case.

Neither men involved have been publicly named, and the only detail that police have released is that the beating took place in the sporting goods section of the store in Lakewood neighbourhood in Long Beach.
Lt. Eddie Hernandez said: “Witnesses have drawn the conclusion that the suspect is homeless. We haven’t confirmed that.
“The victim was in the sporting-goods section. The suspect approached him and started to attack him with a baseball bat, causing severe head trauma.”
Later reports said that the homeless man was asking shoppers for money and the elder man turned him down.
The homeless then picked up an aluminium bat from the sports section that he used to start beating the 74-year-old.
One shopper, Jennifer Thompson, was in the next aisle over when the attack occurred.
“Just think, somebody’s family is going to be home tonight and say <<My relative got beat up with a baseball bat in the sporting goods of WalMart>>. This was terrible,” the woman said.
“I heard no words, I just heard the noise,” Jennifer Thompson said.
“He must have been apparently hitting him with the bat.”
The investigation continues as police will try to gather information by looking through store security footage.

On the night of 20 December, 2008, someone called 911 from Elizabeth Evans’ Gulfport condominium but did not hang up.
Attorney Christopher LaBruzzo said Patrick A. Evans arrived at the condominium with a handgun. On the tape, which will be played for the jury, Patrick A. Evans can be herad telling his estranged wife: “Sit on the bed.”
Her wife, Elizabeth K. Evans replies to him “no”. A third voice – of Jerry B. Taylor – says: “Put the gun down” before a gunshot is heard.
Attorney Christopher LaBruzzo told jurors: “Boom, you will hear a gunshot, a single shot, close range, striking Mr Taylor in the throat. Causing internal damage which ultimately resulted in his death.
Seeing hearing and witnessing this gunshot, Elizabeth Evans shouts, <<Are you out of your f***ing…>>. Boom, second shot.”

British researchers from Durham University have found a way of slowing down ageing in individual cells, which will be reflected in a future “forever young” pill.
Durham University scientists believe their work could help the elderly stay healthy well into their twilight years, as well as help children suffering from progeria, a rare condition that causes them to grow old before their time.
Professor Chris Hutchison said: “The findings are at a very early stage but they show the potential for helping people live more comfortable and less painful lives when they reach 70 or 80 years of age and beyond.”

The reasearchers hope that the drug, N-acetyl cysteine, can one day be used to treat HGPS, improving the quality of life for children.
It is also believed that, with many of the problems of HGPS, such as hardening of the arteries, stiffness of the joints and hip dislocations, also present in normal ageing, N-acetyl cysteine might have a much more general use.
While N-acetyl cysteine may not help people live longer, it could make a person’s later years more pleasant.
Prof. Chris Hutchison said: “Our findings could be an important step to helping both children with progeria and older people to live lives that are less debilitating in terms of health problems.”
Professor James Goodwin, of charity Age UK, said the research offers valuable insights into the ageing process.
Prof James Goodwin said: “Although it’s fantastic that people are living longer than ever, we know that on average men can expect to live 7.4 years and women 9 years at the end of their lives with a disability.
“To mitigate the years we spend in ill health, it is clear that one of the most promising areas of research centres on slowing down the ageing process and tackling age-related illness.”
The approach is not the only one that holds promise.

Dawn Wilcox said American Airlines did offer her a shower, but that she didn’t have any clean trousers to put on and was not given any.
American Airlines also offer her a food voucher and $100 credit towards another flight, she said.
American Airlines have now offered Dawn Wilcox a formal apology.

Radaronline.com reports that Star magazine have obtained the court papers, which are said to have be filed late October, making the request.
The website also reported that Mariah Yeater asks for Justin Bieber “to provide adequate support for my baby”.
Mariah Yeater claims she had sex with Justin Bieber on October 25, 2010, when she was aged 19-years-old and he was aged 16-years-old out the time.
That would mean under California law that Justin Bieber was underage and if the claims turn out to be true Mariah Yeater would be guilty of statutory rape of a minor.
According to Radaronline.com a hand-signed affidavit has been reviewed and claiming that Mariah Yeater was invited backstage by bodyguards after Justin Bieber’s performance at the Los Angeles Staples centre.
The report said that after describing meeting Justin Bieber, Mariah Yeater wrote in the affidavit: “Immediately, it was obvious that we were mutually attracted to one another, and we began to kiss. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber suggested that I go with him to a private place where we could be alone.
“I agreed to go with him and on the walk to a private area, he told me he wanted to make love to me and this was going to be his first time.
“We went inside and immediately his personality changed drastically. He began touching me and repeatedly said he wanted to f*** the s*** out of me. At the time I asked him to put a condom for protection, but he insisted that he did not want to.
“In his own words, he said that because it was his first time he wanted to feel everything.”
Mariah Yeater is said to have described the intercourse as “brief”.
A court hearing is said to have been set for December 15.
According to TMZ, a spokesperson for Justin Bieber said: “While we haven’t yet seen the lawsuit, it’s sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims.”

The footage was uploaded onto the Reddit website late last month by a person claiming to be the victim – judge William Adams’ daughter, Hillary.
Hillary is said to have suffered from ataxic cerebral palsy from birth and has a passion for technology. The girl is believed to have illegally downloaded the video game as well as music.
Hillary writes that she’d decided to post the footage – which she’d been “holding onto until the right time” – after receiving “a barrage of harassment” in a phone call from her father.
The title reads: “Family law judge beats own daughter for using the internet, please spread”.
In total the girl receives 20 hard lashes from judge William Adams and one from her mother.
The mother screams: “You turn over like a 16-year-old and take it like a grown woman.”
As the girl lies crying on her bed he shouts: “Do you want to put some more computer games on?
“Are you happy disobeying your parents?
“If I hear so much as you raising your f***ing voice to me or your mother with the wrong tone or do one little thing or you look at me f***ing wrong, I’m going to wear your f***ing a** out with this belt.”
Although it has not been confirmed that the man shown is Judge William Adams, several people have posted comments below the video claiming it is definitely him.
One post from a J. Andre Bardin, who claims to be one of Hillary’s friends, reads: “I know in the article you say you cannot confirm the man in the video is him, but I can. It’s him.
“That’s his voice, that’s his mannerisms, and that is his house.”

History tells us that JFK won the debate, but some studies have found that those who heard the debate on the radio actually preferred Richard Nixon.
In the end, appearance triumphed over substance and JFK won the election. He went on to serve as president until 1963, when he was assassinated.

The extraordinary revelation is sure to raise eyebrows among historians when Chris Matthews’ book is published this week.
The “Ask not…” speech has long been thought to have written with the input o JFK’s poetic speechwriter Theodore C. Sorensen.
Theodore C. Sorensen, who died in 2010, helped idealize and immortalize the JFK’s tragically brief administration.
The speecwriter was best known for working with JFK on passages of soaring rhetoric, including the 1961 inaugural address, which also proclaimed that “the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans”.
But who wrote what has always been blurred – political historians say that John F. Kennedy and Theodore C. Sorensen were so inextricably linked that perhaps only they knew who scripted what parts of the speeches.
Theodore C. Sorensen, an adoring follower of JFK, never took credit for the president’s timeless phrases – saying that it was a totally collaborative effort.
What is certain is that of the many speeches Theodore C. Sorensen helped compose, JFK’s inaugural address shone the brightest.
Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations includes four citations from the speech – about a seventh of the entire address, which built to the unforgettable “Ask not…” exhortation.
Much of the roughly 14-minute speech – the fourth-shortest inaugural address ever, but in the view of many experts rivalled only by Abraham Lincoln’s – was marked by similar sparkling phrase-making.
Theodore C. Sorensen said he drew inspiration for the speech from the Bible, from Abraham Lincoln – and from the rousing wartime speeches of British prime minister Winston Churchill.
