[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]A new treatment for leukemia had amazing results, surprising even the researchers who designed it. The new treatment has eradicated the cancer cells present in the first three patients tested bodies.

Early results of a clinical trial showed that genetically engineered T cells eradicate leukemia cells and thrive.

Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania have genetically engineered patients’ T cells — a type of white blood cell — to attack cancer cells in advanced cases of a common type of leukemia.

The first two of three patients studied, who received the innovative treatment, have been cancer-free for more than one year. In the case of the third patient, over 70% of cancer cells were removed, according to the researchers.

"Microscopic image showing two T cells binding to beads, depicted in yellow, that cause the cells to divide. After the beads are removed, the T cells are infused into cancer patients." (Dr. Carl June / Pennsylvania Medicine)

“In just three weeks, tumors were destroyed, the effect being more violent than we ever have imagined,” said Dr. Carl June, one of the researchers involved in the study.

“Each cell can destroyed thousands of cancer cells,” said June, “each patient have been removed tumors from at least 900 grams.”

“A huge accomplishment”

[googlead tip=”vertical_mare” aliniat=”dreapta”] “This is a huge accomplishment — huge,” said Dr. Lee M. Nadler, dean for clinical and translational research at Harvard Medical School, who discovered the molecule on cancer cells that the Pennsylvania team’s engineered T cells target.

Innovative treatment is using patients’ own T cells, which are extracted from body cells and then genetically modified to attack cancer cells and to multiply and then reintroduced into patients’ blood.

Findings of the trial were reported Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine.

According to LA Times report, for building the cancer-attacking cells, the researchers modified a virus to carry instructions for making a molecule that binds with leukemia cells and directs T cells to kill them. Then they drew blood from three patients who suffered from chronic lymphocytic leukemia and infected their T cells with the virus.

When they infused the blood back into the patients, the engineered T cells successfully eradicated cancer cells, multiplied to more than 1,000 times in number and survived for months. They even produced dormant “memory” T cells that might spring back to life if the cancer was to return.

On average, the team calculated, each engineered T cell eradicated at least 1,000 cancer cells.

Side effects included loss of normal B cells, another type of white blood cell, which are also attacked by the modified T cells, and tumor lysis syndrome, a complication caused by the breakdown of cancer cells.

“We knew [the therapy] could be very potent,” said Dr. David Porter, director of the blood and marrow transplantation program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a coauthor of both papers, which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine.

“But I don’t think we expected it to be this dramatic on this go-around.”

Bone marrow transplants from healthy donors have been effective in fighting some cancers, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, but the treatment can cause side effects such as infections, liver and lung damage, even death.

“1/5 of bone marrow transplant recipients may die of complications unrelated to their cancer,” Porter said.

Researchers have been working for many years to develop cancer treatments that leverage a patient’s immune system to kill tumors with much greater precision.

Specialists not involved in the trial said the new discovery is very important because it suggested that T cells could be adapted to destroy a range of cancer cells, including ones of the blood, breast or colon

“It is kind of a holy grail,” said Dr. Gary Schiller, a researcher from UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center who was not involved in the trial.

“It would be great if this could be applied to acute leukemia, where there is a terrible unmet medical need,” UCLA’s Schiller said.

Dr. David Porter added:

“Previously efforts to replace risky bone marrow transplants with such engineered T cells proved disappointing because the cells were unable to multiply or survive in patients.”

“This time, the T cells were more robust because the team added extra instructions to their virus to help the T cells multiply, survive and attack more aggressively.”

“About 15,000 patients are diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia every year. Many can live with the disease for years. Bone marrow transplants are the only treatment that eradicates the cancer.”

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]Dr. David Porter cautioned that these were preliminary results and the scientists plan to continue the trial, treating more patients and following them over longer periods.

“The researchers also would like to expand the work to other tumor types and diseases,” Porter said.

The hope, scientists said, is that the method would work for cancers that can kill more ruthlessly and rapidly.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, launched in UK and European countries last week, must to be pulled from the market, as a German court recently granted Apple a preliminary injunction against Samsung to stop sales and marketing for Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The fight for tablets market supremacy moves into the court, as Apple sued Samsung for using iPhone and iPhone range products design elements and product-specific interface in its Galaxy Tab 10.1.

In response to the allegations, Samsung officials said that any exterior similarities could not be taken as evidence of copying Apple’s design, giving the example of clamshell format, first introduced by Motorola for its own range of mobile phones and then copied by other manufacturers worldwide.

Although Samsung officials rejected the Apple accusations, which they found as not being based on concrete evidence, Apple managed to convince judges from regional court of Dusseldorf, Germany. Apple obtained a preliminary injunction against Samsung for stopping sales and marketing of Galaxy Tab 10.1 on the European continent, excepting for the Netherlands, where Apple has a separate trial.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was the best selling tablet ever in Europe since its launch, comparing to every other tablet, except for the iPad 2.

Samsung can appeal against this court decision, but even so Apple won a major victory against its main competitor, managing to block for a few weeks Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 selling, which shortly became the best-selling tablet since iPad2 launch .

Besides Samsung, the end users also have been affected by these aggressive tactics, being forced to choose from a poorer supply of tablets, or to order Galaxy Tab 10.1 from other regions.

London riots latest updates. Metropolitan Police took drastic actions.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]Tuesday, the fourth night of riots in UK. One Nottingham police station was set ablaze by a group of up to 40 people, according to the police, meanwhile there was looting in Manchester  and other disturbances in Salford.

16,000 police officers have been placed on London’s streets in order to prevent a fourth night of disturbances

10:00 p.m., local time. Canning Circus police station in Nottingham was attacked by a group of 40, no injuries were reported and a number of men were detained nearby, said Nottinghamshire police.

Birmingham and other parts of the West Midlands met some trouble, but was relative calm in London as Scotland Yard attempted to put the city in a lockdown with 16,000 police on the streets instead of 6,000 on Monday.

[youtube 0sKrmELX_aw]

Scotland Yard gave specific orders to the officers to use each available force including the possible deployment of plastic bullets to tackle widespread rioting and looting as London was flooded with the biggest police presence in British history.

Manchester, looting was taking place across city centre. There were also disturbances in Salford and tense scenes around Shopping City, where a large group of youths had gathered.

Rioters set ablaze a Miss Selfridge shop on Market Street in Manchester city centre. About 100 young people looted Foot Asylum in the Arndale Centre after two of them smashed the windows with stones and jumped into the store carrying out clothing and shoes.

On King Street, a recently opened fashion boutique, owned by former Oasis singer, Liam Gallagher, was been hit by looters too.

A Bang & Olufsen store and a Diesel clothing shop were also broken into, with a chorus of cheers going up among the crowd as the front window of the latter was smashed.

Few looters shouted out for the others to follow, suggesting a degree of co-ordination. They immediately spread away in many directions as police sirens sounded.

An amusement arcade had been looted in Piccadilly Gardens. In Piccadilly Museums, machines were overturned with coins spread across the carpet.

A cafe on Deansgate also had its windows smashed.

Large crowds gathered along the street, while looters helped themselves to bottles of alcohol from a Sainsbury’s Local at the corner of Bridge Street.

The thieving continued for several minutes in front of onlookers.

All the looters had grabbed what they wanted and disappeared into side streets before three police vans arrived.

A jewellers was also reportedly attacked before plain-clothed police nearby ran in to arrest two looters from the shop.

Riot police in vans chased large groups of youths wearing ski masks and hoods as they rampaged through the city streets.

Other gangs prowled the streets on mountain bikes, their faces also masked.

On occasions they could be seen talking to drivers of cars on mobile phones, exchanging information, while they drove around the streets in what appeared to be co-ordinated manoeuvres.

Terry Sweeney, assistant Chief Constable  of Greater Manchester Police said:

“The force has been engaged with dealing with outbreaks of minor disorder in Salford and Manchester city centre this afternoon, involving a small number of youths. A handful of shops have been attacked by groups of youths who have congregated and seem intent on committing disorder. As we have said, we will not allow such mindless criminal damage and wanton violence to go unpunished and we will arrest and prosecute anyone found to be involved in looting or acts of criminal damage.”

Earlier two cars were set on fire in West Bromwich where shops closed early in the afternoon after rumours of trouble circulated online.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]Police made a total of 36 arrests in the West Midlands on Tuesday night, as fresh disturbances saw looting and vehicles set alight Birmingham, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton.

But West Midlands Police said the disorder was not as severe as Monday’s looting in Birmingham city centre, which led to 142 arrests and saw 13 people taken to hospital.

Shops, including a branch of Marks & Spencer and a hi-fi store, were again targeted in Birmingham tonight, although two groups of youths were largely kept away from the city centre by riot police.

In central Birmingham a fluid mob of up to 300 youths gathered, dispersed and regrouped, attacking shops.

Chased by police, groups tried to get into the Mailbox shopping, office and restaurant centre near the city’s rejuvenated canal basin, and the Pallisades shopping complex above New Street station before staff brought shutters down.

Marks and Spencer’s had windows damaged and a car was set on fire in Albert Street by a large gang retreating from the Dale End part of the centre. House of Fraser was attacked along with a nearby jewellery shop before a line of riot police with batons drove the crowd away.

West Midlands police urged to families with teenagers out to get in touch with them and persuade them to go back home.

3 men had been arrested by 8:00 p.m.

Police pinned 60 rioters in part of Wolverhampton after 5 hours of sporadic violence which left the town centre empty of residents and visitors, with shops shuttered and pubs shutting early. As in Birmingham, a core of several hundred troublemakers continually gathered, dispersed and then picked new targets.

The atmosphere also remained very tense in Handsworth with groups of Afro-Caribbean youths gathering, while Asian shop-owners and security staff stood outside their heavily-shuttered stores.

Mark Duggan’s death forensic report.

The man who was shot by police, sparking the wave of rioting that has hit London, died of a single gunshot wounding his chest. An inquest has heard.

Mark Duggan was deadly shot by armed officers in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, north London, on Thursday, August, 4, after they stopped the minicab he was in to carry out an arrest as part of a pre-planned operation.

Mark Duggan, the man who was shot by police, sparking the wave of rioting that has hit London, died of a single gunshot wounding his chest

[googlead tip=”lista_mica” aliniat=”stanga”]An inquest, which began on Tuesday morning at North London coroner’s court, in High Barnet, heard that Mark Duggan died of a single gunshot wounding his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene onThursday at 6:41p.m.

Last Thursday evening, officers from the Metropolitan Police (Met) Operation Trident and Special Crime Directorate 11, accompanied by officers from CO19, the Met’s specialist firearms command, stopped the silver Toyota Estima minicab in Ferry Lane, close to Tottenham Hale tube station, to arrest Mark Duggan.

According to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police sparked London’s riots, did not fire a shot at police officers before they killed him.

Releasing the initial findings of ballistics tests, the police watchdog said a CO19 firearms officer fired two bullets, and that a bullet that lodged in a police radio was “consistent with being fired from a police gun”.

The IPCC said Duggan was carrying a loaded gun, but it had no evidence that the weapon had been fired. It said tests were continuing.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]The officer who fired the fatal shots has been removed from firearms duties, which is standard procedure, pending the IPCC investigation. One theory, not confirmed by the IPCC, is that the bullet became lodged in the radio from a ricochet or after passing through Duggan.

The IPCC’s statement said the bullet lodged in the police radio was a “jacketed round“. This is a police-issue bullet and is “consistent with having been fired from a [police] Heckler and Koch MP5“, it said.

The statement said:

“Our investigators will be examining recordings of radio transmissions from both police and London ambulance service, including 999 calls, with a view to tracing further witnesses. We will also be examining any intelligence and surveillance material leading up to the planning of the operation.”

The non-police firearm found at the scene was a converted BBM Bruni self-loading pistol. The gun was found to have a “bulleted cartridge” in the magazine, which is being subjected to further forensic tests.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]The police officer whose radio was hit was taken to Homerton hospital where he was examined and discharged later that night.

The minicab driver was not injured but was badly shaken by what he saw, the IPCC said. His account, as well as those of the officers, is being examined along with the forensic evidence.

The police watchdog said it was examining CCTV footage of the area, including from buses passing by at the time.

Colin Sparrow, the deputy senior investigator for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), told the brief hearing that the organization’s “complex investigation” could take 4 to 6 months.

Andrew Walker, the coroner for the northern district of Greater London, adjourned the hearing until December, 12, when a pre-inquest review will be held.

Walker told members of Duggan’s family, including his fiancee, Semone Wilson:

“Can I just offer my deepest sympathies to the family of Mark Duggan.”

“As members of the family will know, in due course there will be an inquest touching the death of Mark Duggan and this is the first stage in that process.”

“Of course, as well as offering our deepest sympathies to members of the family, I would like to reassure members of the family that we will be working closely with the IPCC throughout the process.”

According to Rachel Cerfontyne, the IPCC commissioner:

“Any concerns expressed by the wider public about a perceived lack of information from the IPCC should be considered in the context that I am only willing to share information once I have had it independently verified and once the people who are directly involved in this case – including Mr Duggan’s family and community leaders – have been fully informed.”

After the hearing, the family said they were “distressed” by the rioting in the wake of his death. In a statement on their behalf, Helen Shaw, from the organization Inquest, said:

“The family wants everyone to know that the disorder going on has nothing to do with finding out what has happened to Mark. They also want people to know they are deeply distressed by the disorder affecting communities across the country.”

PM David Cameron promised to restore the order, recalling British Parliament on next Thursday in response to the “sickening scenes”, which prompted disturbances into the other cities.

Tuesday afternoon, David Cameron met officers in the Metropolitan Police’s Gold command in Lambeth before speaking to emergency service personnel in Croydon.

The PM condemned the “sickening scenes of people looting, vandalizing, thieving, robbing”.

David Cameron sent a message to the rioters:

“You will feel the full force of the law. And if you are old enough to commit these crimes, you are old enough to face the punishment.”

The Parliament recalling will allow Members of the Parliament to “stand together in condemnation of these crimes and to stand together in determination to rebuild these communities”, PM said.

According to BBC, the Metropolitan force has released what it says will be the “first of many” CCTV images (closed circuit television network) of rioting suspects. In the meantime, 32 persons have appeared in court charged with offences such as burglary and criminal damage during the previous riots.

Among those people were a graphic designer, college students, a youth worker, a university graduate and a man signed up to join the army. Some gave non-London addresses. 18 people were remanded in custody.

Until now, 563 people have been arrested and 105 charged in connection with violence in London.

Stephen Kavanagh, Deputy Assistant Commissioner said the use of plastic bullets, which never before used to deal with riots in England, would be “considered carefully” in case of future disturbances.

He also added: “That does not mean we are scared of using any tactic.”

Officers believe some rioters used BlackBerry Messenger to organize violence.

In this matter, two 18-year-olds were arrested in Folkestone, Kent, and a 16-year-old was being questioned in Glasgow on suspicion of inciting violence through internet social networking sites.

According to the BBC News, the developments related to Monday’s disturbances included:

Violence and looting reported across London, including in Hackney, Croydon, Clapham Junction, Peckham, Lewisham, Stratford and Ealing

3 people being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was injured by a car in Wembley, north-west London, while trying to stop suspected looters

Buildings set alight in several areas, including Croydon where part of the Tramlink service was suspended

In Birmingham, 138 people were arrested after scores of youths smashed windows and looted shops in the shopping area

West Midlands Police said a police station in Holyhead Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, was set alight

Up to 200 youths with masks roamed through Toxteth in Liverpool, while Bristol police said they dealt with outbreaks of disorder involving about 150 people

A Nottinghamshire police station was attacked in the St Ann’s area and 200 tyres were set alight in the street

Police dealt with “small pockets of disorder” in the Chapeltown area of Leeds

The Association of British Insurers said the damages will most probably cost insurers “tens of millions of pounds“.

Highbury Corner Magistrates Court has dealt with a large number of cases arising from the riots in north London.

Those who appeared this afternoon were all male and generally in their 20s, although there were some youths.

Charges were most commonly burglary and criminal damage. There were a large number of guilty pleas entered.

The magistrates said that their powers of punishment were insufficient in the light of the fact that the offences were committed during a riot, which amounted to a “substantial aggravating feature”.

A significant number of those charged were said in court to be of previously good character and had simply been drawn in to the offending.

In one defendant’s case, a lawyer described his client as offending in “a moment of madness”.

However, the force has drafted in special constables and community support officers to ensure five times the usual number of officers for a Tuesday will be on duty. Similar staffing levels will be maintained over three days.

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard said a 26-year-old man found shot in a car in Croydon, amid rioting in the south London town, had died in hospital.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]Riots have spread across England capital on a third night of violence, with disturbances flaring up in other cities – Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham and Bristol.

In addition to the regular street police officers number, another 1,700 were deployed in London, where stores were looted and buildings were torched.

The British PM, David Cameron has returned earlier from his vacation to discuss the unrest, which first flared on Saturday after a peaceful protest in Tottenham over the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by police.

At least 400 people have been arrested following the street violence across London over the last three days, the London Metropolitan Police said.

According to Scotland Yard, 69 people had been charged with offences.

Steven Kavanagh, Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner told to BBC Breakfast

“It was a shocking and appalling morning for London to wake up to”

“The Met (Metropolitan London Police) was stretched beyond belief in a way that it has never experienced before.”

When asked at what stage he would consider bringing in the Army, he responded by saying “all options are being considered”.

3 people have been arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was injured by a car in Brent, Northwest London, while trying to stop suspected looters.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]The PM David Cameron will chair an emergency meeting in Downing Street 10 as Britain faces the worst night of rioting in the last 20 years.

He’s shortened his summer holiday and flown back from Italy to deal with the escalating crisis.

David Cameron will meet Home Secretary, Theresa May and Acting Scotland Yard Commissioner, Tim Godwin before chairing a meeting of the Cobra emergency planning committee (the Government’s emergency committee) at 9 a.m., local time.

Asked why the PM had now decided to return from his vacation, after previously saying he would not, a Downing Street source said:

“The situation has become more serious.”

For David Cameron this situation could be a key moment that shapes how his premiership is seen.

A failure to maintain safety on the streets is seen to be a government failure and he can’t afford for there to be a fourth night of disturbances.

Although Downing Street says David Cameron had been monitoring the situation on “an hourly basis” while on holiday, he appeared well behind the curve of public anger at the rioting.

On the other hand, David Cameron must be aware that some in his own party and in right-leaning papers will be ready to cite the riots as evidence that the prime minister is not sufficiently focused on law and order.

The BBC Daily Politics presenter, Andrew Neil, writing on Twitter, said the riots were the prime minister’s “first real crisis”,

adding “now we will find out if Mr. Cameron is composed of the stuff of leadership”.

Birmingham was the first city, after London, where rioting has erupted in, with store windows being smashed and shops being looted during what police described as “mindless thuggery”.

A police station in Handsworth, about 3 miles out of the city centre, was later reported by police to be set ablaze.

Among the shops damaged in the city centre were a McDonald’s restaurant and an Armani store at the Mailbox shopping centre which was looted.

According to the police, about 100 people had been arrested, many of them young people.

11 people have been taken to a number of hospitals in the city.

The riots started during the early evening. At 23:45, local time, West Midlands Police confirmed the police station in Holyhead Road was on fire and also reported some of its cars had come under attack on Holyhead Road.

Ambulance crews said they had been called to 24 incidents – mostly treating people who had been assaulted.

Injuries included cuts and bruises to the head and a dislocated knee.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]Police urged parents to contact their children and get them to return home.

West Midlands Police said 4 people were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, 4 for violent disorder and one for a breach of the peace.

West Midlands Police Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe said she still had a significant number of officers in Birmingham city centre.

“There is still outbreaks of violence and looting of shops is still taking place.”

“We will continue to make arrests while this mindless thuggery takes place in our city centre. It is totally unacceptable.”

She added her first priority was to bring calm back to the city centre and appealed to parents to phone their children and get them to come home.

Police had been aware of “Twitter intelligence” from lunchtime, suggesting there would be trouble in the city during the evening.

Police said officers were controlling access on some of the routes into Birmingham.

Police in riot gear were positioned in several parts of the city centre, with some advising onlookers to get off the streets.

Police have also urged people to think twice before calling emergency services with non-urgent calls as there is high demand for services.

Shabana Mahmood, Labour Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood, said it was “mindless criminality”.

“Obviously we have to have a debate and consider whether there are underlying reasons and learn some of the lessons potentially from some of these incidents as well.”

“I think that’s a debate for another day really because I think at the moment, the really important thing is that we need to support the police in the work they’re doing.”

Councilor Paul Tilsley, deputy leader of the city council, said the authority would make every effort possible from first light on Tuesday to clear up any damage and bring normality back to the city.

“To this end we’d stress to retailers, workers and shoppers alike that the city remains very much open for business and would encourage them to come in as normal tomorrow.”

Liverpool.

Police in Liverpool have been dealing with a number of “isolated outbreaks” of disorder, including reports of vehicles on fire and criminal damage.

Merseyside Police said a number of officers were deployed to the south of the city after being called to reports of disorder at 22:00, local time, on Monday.

There have been reports of objects being thrown at riot police and their vans.

There were reports from an eyewitness of up to 200 youths wearing masks in Toxteth.

High Park Street was partly blocked by police with vans and officers wearing riot gear as a group of youths gathered in Dingle.

A police helicopter circled the area.

There were reports of a 10-minute stand-off in Admiral Street, with youths throwing bottles, cans and sticks at riot police.

The youths eventually dispersed into three separate groups.

[youtube GwJvH9Ak7ww]

Assistant Chief Constable, Andy Ward said:

“Officers have tonight dealt with a small number of incidents of violence across the city.”

“We will not tolerate any violence on the streets of Liverpool and have taken swift and robust action in response.”

“We will work hard to ensure the people involved in the incidents are brought to justice.”

“Merseyside Police has good links with communities across the region and over the last two days we have worked closely with residents to assess tensions within the community.”

“We will continue to work with community leaders across the region to ensure an appropriate response to any incidents that occur.”

Public was advised to avoid the Smithdown Road, Upper Parliament Street, Lodge Lane and Lawrence Road.

Bristol.

Monday evening, several stores have been damaged and cars set on fire after disorder broke out in parts of Bristol.

About 150 people have been involved in the disturbances in several areas, including the city centre and the Cabot Circus and Broadmead areas.

Avon and Somerset Police said 4 arrests were made but more were expected, as CCTV is reviewed.

A police spokesman said the force had been prepared for the possibility of disorder following events in other parts of the UK and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

The disturbances were eventually brought to an end in the early hours of Tuesday.

Mark Duggan’ s death – ballistic report.

After last weekend two nights of violence and looting following protests at Mark Duggan’s death on Thursday, London Police and residents are again bracing themselves for disruption.

The today riots began in Hackney with a small blaze of a terraced house, but the flames quickly spread and appeared to have engulfed all three floors.

Local police officers said shops in Hackney began closing their shutters after hearing “rumours”of trouble initially emanating from BlackBerry Messenger exchanges. Most of the stores had locked up by early afternoon as support officers began arriving in increasing numbers in the vicinity of Hackney Central railway station and three masked youths riding bicycles appeared on the main shopping thoroughfare of Mare Street.

The new street violence started shortly after a large group of police detained two men against the wall of Hackney’s Old Town Hall

The new street violence started shortly after a large group of police detained two men against the wall of Hackney’s Old Town Hall building, now a betting shop, and a crowd gathered to watch, many of them photographing the events. After some brief skirmishes and an angry verbal tirade against a police cluster by a young woman in the graveyard to the rear of the betting shop, an officer shouted to a colleague to “get the Natos,” a reference to riot helmets.

Groups of rioters began attacking the officers at about 16:20 p.m. local time, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

A line of riot police was confronting people, some of them masked, while police helicopters were flying low overhead.

Some of the youths tried to rush the police line, they were throwing rocks. The police pushed back, sending the crowds running down Mare Street.

Police vehicles and officers in helmets holding riot shields eventually blocked off access to Mare Street south of its pedestrian Narrow Way section and the railway bridge, as buses backed up along adjoining Amhurst Road.

The rioters were about 100 running battles with police at the Bethnal Green end of Mare Street

The rioters were about 100 running battles with police at the Bethnal Green end of Mare Street. Youths were looting shops, including the boarded-up Texaco garage. Bottle banks on Mare Street have been upended to provide ammunition for launching at police. Many of them were walking around with spoils of their looting, swigging from bottles of Martell.

Pale, the owner of the looted Texaco garage on Mare Street said:

“They just barged in, took everything … that’s 24 years of my life gone. I’ve never seen anything like that. I didn’t try to stop them, my life is worth more than that.”

Even the Co-operative Funeral Care Home on Mare Street was boarded up – next door they are looting the Cash X-Change.

Reactions of the viewers varied from a man telling an officer moving a youth on to:

“Get your hands off him, pig!”

to an afterschool club worker declaring to police that

“These kids shouldn’t be out here, they should be back in their yard,”

and saying that if she was in charge of dealing with rioters she’d “tear gas their asses”.

Traffic was backed up, buses were stopped, most of them being empty and hit by stones. Police cars were also being smashed by youths, who were armed with wooden poles and metal bars. Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD Sports store, before police lines dispersed the group. Planks of wood taken from a lorry were then hurled towards riot officers.

Trains were not stopping at Hackney Central and buses are being diverted from the area.

Violence has also broken out in Peckham, South London, where a bus has been torched on Peckham High Street.

In nearby Lewisham, a trail of bins and a number of vehicles were on fire.

At 7 p.m., local time, police have regained control of Mare Street.

A large numbers of masked youths were still in the area at that moment. Car burned out on Ellingfort road off Mare Street.

A policeman says they were busy “sterilizing the area”.

Boris Johnson, London’s mayor cut short his holiday to return to the city, where more than 200 people have been arrested and 35 officers injured.

Home Secretary, Theresa May also returned early from holiday, to meet Acting Metropolitan Police (Met) Commissioner Tim Godwin and other senior officers.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Stephen Kavanagh said they discussed the police response to the violence.

“They were looking at preparations for tonight (Monday) to make sure any violence is dealt with quickly.”

Theresa May condemned the riots as “sheer criminality” and said those responsible would “face the consequences of their actions”.

“The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally unacceptable.”

She also paid tribute to the bravery of police officers and urged local communities “to work constructively with the police to help them bring these criminals to justice”.

Theresa May said at least 215 people had been arrested and 25 people charged.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Stephen Kavanagh said there were “significant resources” on the streets, with a third more officers on duty than on Sunday.

He added:

“What we can see is that the Metropolitan Police are getting police officers there in numbers”.

“When we have large numbers of criminals intent on that type of violence, we can only do that, get lots of officers there quickly and try to protect local businesses and local people.”

He also admitted relations with the family of the man shot dead by police could have been handled better.

In addition, Stephen Kavanagh said:

“I want to apologise to the Duggan family because I think both the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) and the Metropolitan Police could have managed that family’s needs more effectively.”

New London riots. The third night of street violence!

Mark Duggan was shot in Northern London.

Northern London riots for Mark Duggan’s death.

According to the police reports, the weapon being carried by Mark Duggan on Thursday was a converted handgun capable of firing real ammunition.

Two police cars and a double decker bus were torched and several local stores were looted by violent rioters last weekend in northern London, Tottenham.

Riots began Saturday evening after more than 120 people marched from Broadwater Farm to Tottenham police station to demand “justice” over the Thursday deadly shooting of a young black man, Mark Duggan, by the police.

Forensic tests on Mark Duggan’s death are being carried out on the handgun found at the scene of Duggan’s fatal shooting and bullets fired by the police.

Mark Duggan was shot by the police Thursday August 4

Mark Duggan was shot by the police on Thursday August, 4

Ballistics experts have established that the firearm being carried in the minicab was a lethal weapon. It used to be a handgun which previously had not been capable of firing – a replica, a starting pistol or a collector’s weapon. But the gun had been converted, as many illegal firearms purchased on the street are – in order to carry real ammunition.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said they hope to have a more complete ballistics picture within 24 hours, which seems to be a complex picture, involving a number of tests to establish trajectory of bullets and how many were fired.

According to Sky the C019, firearms officer said that he never claimed Duggan had shot at him.

The officer involved in Thursday evening attempted arrest told investigators that he opened fire because he believed he was in danger from a lethal weapon. Two shots were fired; one hit Duggan and one missed lodging in another officer’s radio.

Forensic tests will establish eventually if Mark Duggan fired his weapon at all during the attempted arrest.

Rachel Cerfontyne, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) commissioner in charge of the independent investigation into Mark Duggan’s fatal shooting said:

“IPCC investigators are currently liaising with scientists at the Forensic Science Service regarding analysis on ballistics. We would anticipate being in a position to share verified results within the next 24 hours.”

According to The Guardian Monday report, initial ballistics tests on a bullet found lodged in a firearms officer’s police radio was a police issue bullet – indicating that Duggan had not opened fire at the officer.

Concluding precisely what really happened when Trident officers, supported by members of the Metropolitan Police stopped the minicab carrying Mark Duggan on Thursday evening relies heavily on the ballistics results and the trajectory on the bullets fired.

Ballistic tests are also carried out to establish the range at which the shots were fired at Duggan. The Metropolitan Police joined the IPCC to say that any suggestion he was killed in an execution style shooting by shots to the head was “inflammatory” and inaccurate.

The IPCC said yesterday that Mark Duggan’s family is being kept up to date with developments.

Rachel Cerfontyne said the family’s concerns were not about contact with the IPCC but the lack of contact from the police in delivering news of his death to Mark Duggan’s parents.

“In the course of our contact (with the family) I know that the family – and indeed the community still have many unanswered questions,”

Rachel Cerfontyne said.

ABC confirmed rumors that Desperate Housewives will be ending after season 8.

Paul Lee, ABC president and Marc Cherry, Desperate Housewives series creator made the announcement Sunday at Television Critic Association press tour session.

The 8th season is set to begin September 25, 2011 and most probably will end May 2012.

Desperate Housewives ends after season 8

Desperate Housewives ends after season 8

Desperate Housewives show brought in huge ratings from the beginning, with an average of more than 20 million viewers at first two seasons. Ratings have slowly declined since its 7th season, which only brought in 1/2 the viewers at about 11 million. Critics have claimed the show “jumped the shark” in its 5th season.

According to Access Hollywood, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry referring to   the show’s end at the TCA’s Summer Session, said:

“I’ve spoken to over half of [the cast about the end of the show]. It was actually kind of bittersweet and lovely, because the women knew that it was a possibility, but they didn’t know, so there was a touch of shock, but not completely.”

Then, Cherry added,

“I love my cast.”

Paul Lee referred to the ABC fun drama as “an iconic show” and said

“I just wanted to make sure it had its victory lap.”

 In addition, Marc Cherry said:

[googlead tip=”patrat_mare” aliniat=”centrat”]

“I wanted to go out when the network still saw us as a viable show and a force to contend with. We felt from a creative standpoint that this was the right time. I feel so good about it.”

Talking about the 8th season story line, Cherry highlighted that it will bring things full circle and will be focused on the “roots” of Mary Alice Young.

Mary Alice Young is the woman whose mysterious death was the basis for the first season.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]

At the end of the session, Cherry said he has “an idea for the last episode” in order to “pay homage” to the multiple cast members who have appeared on the show during the time. Regarding the inclusion of Edie Britt, a character played by Nicollette Sheridan –  who sued him in 2010 for allegedly physically assaulting her while she was on the show – Cherry said,

“I don’t know how I would do that.”

Audio documents have been made by a famous American historian, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. M, few months after JFK’s death, on 22 November 1963. The documents were sealed until now in a hidden safe of Kennedy Library in Boston.

Recordings will unveil her version about the assassination of JFK and show that she strongly believes that former U.S. President was assassinated at the Vice President, Lyndon B Johnson, and several businessmen, who had interests in the Vietnam War and Bano oil contracts, command. Lyndon B Johnson became the successor of the former U.S. leader.

“She became convinced that the then vice president, along with several businessmen in the South, had orchestrated the Dallas shooting, with gunman Lee Harvey Oswald – long claimed to have been a lone assassin – merely part of a much larger conspiracy,” wrote The Daily Mail.

Lyndon B Johnson (LBJ) was a Texas-born and served as the state’s governor and senator, completed JFK’s term and went on to be elected president in his own right.

Jackie Kennedy, who eventually married to Greek shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis, had ordered that recordings should not be released until 50 years after her death, with some reports suggesting she feared that her revelations might make her family targets for revenge.

The former First Lady died 17 years ago from cancer, aged 64, and now her daughter, Caroline Kennedy’s agreed to release the recordings early, although the term required by Jackie O. would accomplish in 2044.[googlead tip=”vertical_mic”]

A Gunman shot seven persons, including his girlfriend and a 11-year-old, in Copley, northeast Ohio late Sunday.

Late Sunday, a gunman from northeast Ohio ran through Copley, a small town of about 14,000 west of Akron, after a family argument. The gunman shot seven persons, including his girlfriend, her brother and a 11-year-old before he was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. Two more people were wounded.

Police Chief, Michael Mier, said:

“One person shot five people to death in one location, then two more were killed nearby before police killed the gunman.”

Eyewitnesses told reporters at least one of the victims was a child.

Police didn’t release yet the names or ages of the victims or armed man, but provided a chronology of the shootings that began around 11 a.m. in a middle-class neighborhood of Copley.

“A person running through the neighborhood and firing a gun” prompted calls to police.

Late Sunday, Copley Police Department said in a press release:

“At a home, the gunman shot his girlfriend, ran to a home next door and shot her brother and four others, then chased two people through some yards and shot one of them,”.

Sgt. Eric Goodwin, from Copley Police said:

“The names and ages of the victims and the gunman weren’t being released until police could tell family members, some of whom are out of state.”

Local newspaper, the Akron Beacon Journal, reported:

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]

“Copley School Superintendent, Brian Poe said a township trustee told him two Copley High School students were killed during the shootings and a third youth, an 11-year-old, was also killed. Poe said the trustee told him the 11-year-old was not a Copley student.”

“A neighbor, Gilbert Elie, said he was getting ready for church when he heard gunshots and cries for help in the wooded neighborhood. He went to a house across the street and said he found a shocking scene: the woman who lived there lying in the driveway, her husband shot near the garage, and their young granddaughter and another woman shot in the front seat of a vehicle, the windows apparently blown out by gunfire.”

“Elie said his neighbors Russ and Gerdie Johnson live at the home.”

“A third woman came out of the house next door and tried to talk to Elie, he said, but their brief exchange ended abruptly when a man followed her out of the house and shot her, sending the 75-year-old Elie running for safety behind a truck.”

“He hid until he could see the gunman was gone, then returned home. Police arrived, and Elie said he heard a second round of shots coming from behind the houses and assumed officers had killed the gunman.”

“Elie described the gunman as unfriendly, a rarity on a street where most neighbors offer a wave in passing. He often worked on his car outside his house but never waved at anyone, Elie said.”

A 53 year-old, Jeff Kirby of nearby Norton said he was visiting his mother’s home, a block from the shootings around 10:30 a.m. when he heard gunfire. There were about 15 shots with several pauses between them.

Jeff Kirby,  said the last gunfire he heard occurred about the same time he heard sirens in the neighborhood.

The neighborhood was blocked off by police. More than 200 people assembled at a park around sunset for an impromptu candlelight vigil for the shooting victims in their town and crime victims elsewhere.

The Reverent Jeff Bogue of the Grace Church of Greater Akron prayed with them, saying it’s troubling that “such evil would come to our little township.” Few residents said they set up a memorial fund.

Copley is about 40 miles south of Cleveland.

The biggest audience was at The Prodigy concert. During the Gentleman & The Evolution’s show a great number of fans began to gather and all of them waited for the main star. Exceptionally, the stage has to be fenced in as The Prodigy requested. Jerzy Owsiak, festival creator,  objected to this. He said that putting bariers beetwen public and artists came in conflict with the values of Woodstock festival, but eventually he complied. The hits  “Breathe”, “Poison”, “Firestarter” and “Smack My Bitch Up”  were sung. The group went to the stage protected by bodyguards, played and left.

Łąki Łan Apteka performed after The Prodigy a special surprise concert and recorded a live DVD. Jerzy Owsiak said he was glad that she was the star who sang at the end of  Polish Woodstock 2011.

Airbourne performed a great show and were cheered by the public. Enej and Arka Noego, two Golden Spinning winners, were also enthusiasticly applauded. Dog Eat Dog’s singer John Connor played wearing a T-shirt of Poland national men’s ice hockey team and he also showed an Woodstock special T-shirt. Large audience danced, sang and listened to the hits “Who’s the king” ,  “No Fronts”.

Two police cars and a double decker bus were torched and several local stores were looted by violent rioters yesterday night in northern London, Tottenham.

According to the eyewitnesses it was a chaos which rages for hours and fires blazed throughout the night while police tried to get the scene under control. People estimated there were 400-500 demonstrators in the streets.

Northern London riots, August 7, 2011

Northern London riots, August 7, 2011

Maria Robinson, Tottenham resident, described the scene in an interview with the BBC.

“The police are hiding. I actually saw a group of police officers run through an alley away from a group of people that are running towards them,” Robinson said.

“The police seem very frightened of the situation at the moment.”

As a result of last Saturday night riots, 26 police officers and 3 others were injured and 42 people have been arrested.

London Metropolitan Police admitted they “had not anticipated” the violence, which came in response to the death of 29-year-old Mark Duggan, shot by police officers on Thursday.

What began as a peaceful march for Mark Duggan exploded into violent street riots when the event was “hijacked by mindless thugs,” police told the Guardian.

Mark Duggan, a black father of four, was killed by police after he was pulled over in a minicab and officers attempted to arrest him. Details on the circumstances of his death remain unclear as police have not released information about why Mark Duggan was pulled over or who shot him.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) release statement concerning Mark Duggan:

“I understand the distress that the shooting of Mark Duggan has caused to his family and in the community and that people need answers about what happened to him,” an IPCC spokesman said.

“This case (Mark Duggan) was referred to the IPCC immediately and we declared it an independent investigation and sent our investigators straight to the scene in Tottenham, where they took control and remained until late Friday night, supervising the forensic examinations. An independent investigation means that all aspects are carried out by IPCC investigators.

“We are in close contact with Mark Duggan’s family and supported 14 family members and friends in viewing and formally identifying Mr Duggan’s body. We have been in telephone contact with close family tonight and have further meetings with them tomorrow.

“I have tonight spoken to community representatives and hope to meet with them and others as early as possible. I remain in frequent contact with David Lammy, the local MP.

“We are still gathering evidence and will release further details about our progress with the investigation as soon as we can.”

David Lammy , member of Parliament for Tottenham , decried the violence, telling reporters that many of the violent protesters “were not from Tottenham” but had traveled to join in the looting.

“A community that was already hurting has had its heart ripped out,” David Lammy said.

The incident seemed to be very similar to Tottenham’s 1985 Broadwater Farm riot, an outbreak of violence sparked by the death of Cynthia Jarrett, a woman who died while police officers were searching her home in connection with her son’s arrest. Cynthia Jarrett’s death was followed by rioting which turned violent, ending in the death of police officer Keith Blakelock.

Tottenham residents said tensions have eased in recent years between the community and the police, but Mark Duggan’s death seems to have ignited the old hostilities.

MDA telethon 2011. Updates.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”centrat”]

MDA dropped Jerry Lewis as host of the annual Telethon. Laugh Factory comedians held a press conference in his support.

After the Wednesday MDA announcement that the association had relieved Jerry Lewis of his duties as host and chairman of the annual telethon, despite his May assertion that the upcoming Labor Day telethon would be his last, many of the Hollywood’s famous Laugh Factory, as Paul Rodriguez, Larry Miller, Tom Dreesen, and Norm Crosby rallied to support the 85 year old comedian.

Jerry Lewis has been let go from the MDA Telethon

Last Friday, they held a press conference at the Laugh Factory club to reprimand the MDA for the decision to drop the man that was the face of telethon and they see as a member of the family.

The comedians demand that Jerry Lewis at the very least should attend the telethon and be given a proper send-off to celebrate his 45 years of hosting.

“If this is the way we’re going, we should also tell grandpa we don’t need him for Thanksgiving,” joked Larry Miller to reporters.

Jamie Masada, Laugh Factory owner said that his club is holding a petition to present to the MDA.

“The charity should have a better, bigger heart,” he said.

The petition has already gained over 10,000 signatures, but Jamie Masada said he is hoping for 100,000 signers expressing disapproval about MDA decision.

“We don’t want to boycott the charity of the kids,” Masada continued.

“We want to to raise money but they didn’t have to be cold-hearted.”

The MDA’s reasoning for replacing Lewis has not been announced, but Laugh Factory owner, Jamie Masada claimed he and the comedians support Jerry Lewis regardless of the reasons for his dismissal.

“He’s not dead,” said Paul Rodriguez during the press conference.

“He’s very much alive.”

The event was full of  bitter-laced humor.

“We’re gonna host our own telethon,” Rodriguez said.

“We’re trying to find a cure for disrespect and ingratitude.”

Norm Crosby called the MDA’s decision as being “abrupt” and “cruel.”

“If it was time for him to leave, that’s debatable. If he was cranky and nasty and difficult, that’s possible too,” Crosby said.

“But it was all because of the passion he had for these kids and the money they raised and for the telethon. Certainly there could’ve been a much more pleasant, easier way for him to go.”

On this year Labor Day, the Laugh Factory is planning a fundraiser from which all proceeds will be donated to research for muscular dystrophy.

46th annual telethon preparations are under way as planned at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, where the event will be held, according to casino spokesman, Tom Mikovits.

There is no comment from the MDA after the press event, according to Jim Brown, the MDA’s vice president of public relations.

Jerry Lewis has been criticized many times by the members of the disability rights community.

In 1990, he wrote a first-person essay entitled “If I Had Muscular Dystrophy” for Parade magazine, in which he characterized those with muscular dystrophy as “being half a person”. Many in the disabled community viewed his remarks as prejudicial, contributing to the idea that people with disabilities are “childlike, helpless, hopeless, non- functioning and noncontributing members of society”. Members of the disability rights community object to Jerry Lewis receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

In February 2000, Lewis stunned an audience gathered to honor his work at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival by saying he doesn’t like female comics. Jerry Lewis said,

“I don’t like any female comedians. A woman doing comedy doesn’t offend me, but sets me back a bit. I, as a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world.”

He later defended the remark, saying it was taken wildly out of context, and added that he made 11 movies with comic character actress Kathleen Freeman.

During the 2007 Labor Day Telethon, Lewis almost let slip the word “faggot” while live on air. While talking to a cameraman, he joked: “Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son, Jesse, the illiterate fag–no…”, at which point he turned away from the camera.

Jerry Lewis health concerns

Jerry Lewis has suffered years of back pain after an injury that almost left him paralyzed when he did a comedic pratfall from a piano on March 20, 1965 while performing at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.

Jerry Lewis and the MDA Telethon using Synergy EZ Muscular Dystrophy

Jerry Lewis Synergy EZ Muscular Dystrophy

He became addicted to the pain killer Percodan, but says he has been off the drug since 1978 and has not taken one since. In April 2002, Lewis had a “Synergy” neurostimulator, developed by Medtronic, implanted in his back, which has helped reduce the discomfort. He is now one of Medtronic’s leading spokespeople.

Jerry Lewis has battled prostate cancer, diabetes I, and pulmonary fibrosis and has had at least two heart attacks. A third heart attack, claimed to have been sustained while filming Cinderfella in 1960, has not been confirmed officially. Prednisone treatment in the early 2000s for pulmonary fibrosis resulted in weight gain and a noticeable change in his appearance.

Pakistan police official, Khurshid Khan, said:

“We are trying to move away other oil tankers. We are not clear whether the bomb was planted in the terminal or with a tanker,”

“Sixteen tankers were completely destroyed.”

In addition, police official said that there were no reports of any casualties.

Mohammad Ijaz Khan, senior police officer in Peshawar, said three explosions were heard before the fire swept through the parked tankers and fire fighters were hardly trying to control the blaze.

Police cordoned off the area after the incident and launched a search operation to track down the attackers.

So far, no group has claimed the attack.

NATO convoys regularly attacked by Tehrik i Taliban Pakistan militants.

NATO and US military rely heavily on the Pakistani supply route into landlocked Afghanistan, more so now that Taliban attacks are increasing.

As a reaction to this incident, the Pakistani authorities have deployed several police contingents and military forces on all major roads in the area to prevent the new attacks.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mare” aliniat=”centrat”]

Recently, Taliban militants have carried out numerous attacks in the rugged tribal area, torching hundreds of NATO vehicles and containers destined for foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Supplies arrive by sea in the southern port city of Karachi, where security analysts believe most of the Afghan Taliban leadership are now hiding. From Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, they have to travel in long, exposed convoys through a northwest province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Using other routes, largely through Russia and the Central Asian states, have proved to be too costly, both economically and politically.

Northern London riots for Mark Duggan’s death.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]

Riots on London streets – police tried to restore order in northern London – Tottenham after rioters torching police cars and looted stores following a protest over the deadly shooting of a man by officers.

Riots began at about 5PM local time Saturday after more than 120 people marched from Broadwater Farm to Tottenham police station to demand “justice” over the deadly shooting of a young black man by police.

Riots on a main road in Tottenham, London

Mark Duggan – the shot man- was a 29-year-old father of four. Mark Duggan died on Thursday in a shootout with Tottenham police officers.

The march, which seemed to begin peacefully, turned violent immediately after dark when two empty police cars parked about 200 meters from the police station were set upon.

Vanessa Robinson, who had taken part in the original march, told the BBC that:

“The rally had started peacefully and descended into absolute chaos”.

The police cars were torched and hundreds of people ran amok outside the police station and also set fire to a double-decker bus and several buildings and shops, including a supermarket. Rioters kicked in windows on the area’s main street as shops were looted, with people seen carting away shopping trolleys full of stolen goods including television sets and clothes.

The violence spread to surrounding residential streets, where vans were also torched.

Some of residents fled their homes, according to the Sky News.

Rioters were armed with metal bars, petrol bombs and baseball bats and numbering at least 300.

8 police officers have been taken to hospital and one of them suffered a head injury.

Media crews had been forced to withdraw from the area after being targeted by rioters.

A London’s Metropolitan Police spokesman said:

“A number of bottles were thrown at these two cars — one was set alight and the second was pushed into the middle of the High Road. It was subsequently set alight”.

“The officers were not in the vehicles and were unhurt.”

Nikki, 53, a Mark Duggan family friend, said Duggan’s friends and relatives had organised the protest because “something (had) to be done” and the marchers wanted “justice for the family”.

Many of those rioters lay down on the road to make their point, she said, adding that while Mark Duggan was “involved in things“, he was not a violent man.

There were some reports telling the unrest was further stoked by posts on social and media networks such as Twitter urging other people to join in.

“It’s an absolute war zone. I walked up there,” said an eyewitness, who only named him as Tim.

“I saw about five youths, all faces covered up. They set a wheelie (trash) bin on fire and threw it into the riot police.”

An unnamed rioter reportedly told Channel Four News:

“This is just the beginning, this is war, and this is what you get — fire.”

David Akinsanya, local resident, 46 year-old, said:

“It’s really bad,”

“I’m feeling unsafe. I saw a guy getting attacked.”

The scene that greeted locals on Sunday morning was like something from a war zone.

One person, who managed to escape before his apartment was burned down, told Sky News that some of his neighbours had managed to get out with only the clothes on their back.

Man said the scene that greeted locals on Sunday morning was like something from a war zone.

“It’s like looking at a scene from somewhere like Syria,” he said.

“It’s surreal. I mean, this is London. This is Tottenham. This is where we live. It’s like something from the Second World War.”

“I don’t know how this happened. I don’t know how this was allowed to happen.”

“This has just ruined so many people’s lives. People have lost everything,” he said.

Sunday morning, police said the situation had calmed on the High Road but officers were still responding to the troubles flaring up elsewhere in the area.

There were also unconfirmed reports that the unrest had spread to nearby Wood Green.

Firefighters were still putting out several small blazes on Sunday morning.

London Police were unable yet to give a count of the buildings and vehicles torched, and the number of arrests was still unknown.

19 people, besides the number of police officers affectted, were believed to have been hurt in the riots.

Stephen Watson, Metropolitan Police Commander said:

“These are very distressing scenes for Londoners,”

“It’s important we emphasize that the safety of the public is of paramount importance to us … Our absolute aim is to restore normality.”

As a reaction to the violent acts, the Metropolitan Police opened the Gold Command Control centre, which is normally used only for major events and incidents, like the royal wedding in April and last December’s student protests.

London Mayor Boris Johnson’s spokeman said Duggan’s shooting was the subject of an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The IPCC has appealed for any witnesses to Duggan’s death to come. The IPCC, which investigates all police shootings, said that specialist firearms officers (on a regular basis, the British police officers do not carry guns) stopped a minicab Thursday to carry out a pre-planned arrest.

They IPCC officers were accompanied by other officers from Trident, which is the unit focused on tackling gun crime in the black community.

The IPCC said:

“Shots were fired and a 29-year-old man, who was a passenger in the cab, died at the scene,”.

“It is believed that two shots were fired by a firearms officer, equipped with a Heckler and Koch MP5 carbine. A non-police issue handgun was recovered at the scene.”

“An officer’s radio which appears to have a bullet lodged in it has also been recovered. Both the radio and the handgun are being sent for expedited forensic tests.”

The Broadwater Farm area is widely known as being the site of a notorious riot in 1985 that followed the death of an African-Caribbean woman who suffered heart failure during a police search of her home. Police Constable Keith Blakelock was brutally stabbed and beaten to death in the ensuing unrest.

The light can make you more visible, but in the same time could help you become invisible sharks seem to found out how this trick works.[googlead tip=”vertical_mare” aliniat=”dreapta”]

A recent study has shown that splendid lantern shark, besides glowing in the darkness of the deep waters, can create through light effects a “cloak of invisibility” wich helps it to avoid predators.

Also, this study gathered provings that the cylindrical-shaped sharks’ habitat is extended around the Okinawa Islands of Japan,in addition to the East China Sea, and the vicinity of southern Japan waters.

Julien Claes, Jerome Mallefet and Keiichi Sato caught three specimens of the splendid lantern shark and they kept them in conditons similar to their natural environment.

The observations they made upon the sharks pointed out that each of them had nine separated bright light emitting areas (photophores). The part on the belly, together with some other areas, are responsible for invisibility effect. More luminous zones are located on the shark’s pectoral fins, flanks, tail and sexual organs, probably involved in schooling and sexual communication.
The researchers think the process is controlled by nerves and hormones in the first way,   secondly the pigments are moving in the cells to accomplish the final effect.

Invisible sharks

Invisible sharks: velvet belly shark shares a lot of features with splendid lantern shark.

Invisible sharks do really exist as a result of a natural phenomenon called bioluminescence.

There are a number of bioluminiscent animals, they use bioluminescence to lure, to repell, to camouflage, to illuminate and even to communicate,  but not all of them can become invisible. How splendid lantern shark produce its shield is explained by Julien  Claes who said to Discovery News:

[googlead tip=”patrat_mare” aliniat=”centrat”]

“The photophores replace the down-welling light from the sun, which is absorbed by the shark’s body. The silhouette of the shark therefore disappears when seen from below.”

It is like someone puts a powerfull light into your eyes, I would say. You can see the light, but everything else becomes invisible, such as invisible sharks.

It is interesting to mention that another small dogfish shark, cookiecutter shark, can be only partially visible in order to attract prey.

Julien  Claes is a scientist of the Catholic University of Louvain’s Marine Biology Lab. During the recent years he and his fellows colleagues have also studied the velvet belly lantern shark, another small dogfish which also has this feature (invisibility).
