Egypt hot air balloon crash kills 19 tourists in Luxor

French, British, Hong Kong and Japanese nationals are among 19 tourists reportedly killed in a hot air balloon crash near the Egyptian city of Luxor.

The balloon was flying at 1,000 ft (300 m) when it caught fire and exploded, plunging onto fields west of Luxor, officials said.

One witness said people were jumping out of the balloon, “from about the height of a seven-storey building”.

Two people, including the balloon’s pilot, reportedly survived the crash.

Luxor lies on the banks of the River Nile and is home to some of Egypt’s most famous pharaonic-era ruins.

The crash happened on one of the many dawn hot air balloon flights that give tourists an aerial view of Luxor’s famous sites, such as Karnak temple and the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

It was understood that a gas cylinder exploded on board the balloon, bringing it down in an agricultural area just outside Luxor.

Cherry Tohamy’s balloon was landing when she heard an explosion and saw flames from a balloon above.

“Our pilot told us that the balloon had hit a high pressure electrical cable and a cylinder on board exploded,” said Cherry Tohamy, an Egyptian living in Kuwait who was on holiday in Luxor.

“People were jumping out of the balloon from about the height of a seven-storey building.”

She said ambulances were at the scene within 15 minutes.

Another witness, US photographer Christopher Michel said his balloon was just about to land when he “heard an explosion and saw smoke”.

NBC News quoted a Luxor health official as saying that the victims include nine from Hong Kong, four from Japan, two from the United Kingdom and two from France, with two yet to be identified.

The British foreign office said it was making urgent inquiries with its colleagues in Egypt to confirm reports of British casualties.

A spokesman from the Hong Kong government confirmed that nine Hong Kong residents were in the crash balloon and a team of immigration officers was being sent to Egypt.

Hot air balloon crashes have happened in Luxor before. Two British women were among 16 injured when their balloon came down in April 2009.

Luxor, like many other parts of Egypt, has seen a sharp downturn in visitor numbers since the uprising in early 2011 that forced long-time President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

Poor sleep has a dramatic effect on internal workings of human body

0

British researchers have found that a run of poor sleep can have a dramatic effect on the internal workings of the human body.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people’s sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analyzed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

More than 700 genes were altered by the shift. Each contains the instructions for building a protein, so those that became more active produced more proteins – changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed – some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation.

Prof. Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, said: “There was quite a dramatic change in activity in many different kinds of genes.”

Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected.

Prof. Colin Smith added: “Clearly sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds of damage appear to occur – hinting at what may lead to ill health.

“If we can’t actually replenish and replace new cells, then that’s going to lead to degenerative diseases.”

He said many people may be even more sleep deprived in their daily lives than those in the study – suggesting these changes may be common.

Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the study was “interesting”.

He said the key findings were the effects on inflammation and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes.

The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could eliminate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Dr. Akhilesh Reddy said: “We don’t know what the switch is that causes all these changes, but theoretically if you could switch it on or off, you might be able to get away without sleep.

“But my feeling is that sleep is fundamentally important to regenerating all cells.”

Italy election results: Split vote leads to stalemate

Italy’s parliamentary elections have ended in stalemate and the possibility of a hung parliament.

With all domestic votes counted, Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre-left bloc has narrowly beaten ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi in the lower house but has failed to secure a majority in the Senate.

Control of both houses is needed to govern and a Berlusconi official said the election was “too close to call”.

A protest movement led by comedian Beppe Grillo won a quarter of the vote.

Meanwhile a bloc led by current Prime Minister Mario Monti came a poor fourth, with about 10%.

The outcome of the election, which comes amid a deep recession and tough austerity measures, was so close that the margin of victory given in interior ministry figures was less than 1% in both houses of parliament.

“It is clear to everyone that a very delicate situation is emerging for the country,” said centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani as the last of the votes were being counted.

Angelino Alfano, secretary of former PM Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party, said the result was “extraordinary”, and he urged the interior ministry to wait before declaring a final result.

The interior ministry figures were not official, he argued, and were “inevitably subject to a margin of error”.

With returns from all polling stations processed, the interior ministry figures gave Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre-left bloc 29.54% of the vote for the lower house (Chamber of Deputies), barely ahead of the 29.18% polled by Silvio Berlusconi’s bloc.

Angelino Alfano said the result was “too close to call” given the tight margin between the two blocs.

Votes cast outside Italy are still to be collected.

Pier Luigi Bersani also won the national vote for the Senate, but was unable to secure the 158 seats required for a majority.

As bonus seats are distributed in the upper house according to regional votes, Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right bloc was expected to emerge with a higher number of seats.

Silvio Berlusconi was heading for victory in three of the four big regions – Lombardy in the north, Campania in the centre, and Sicily in the south.

Initial exit polls on Monday afternoon gave Pier Luigi Bersani’s bloc a clear victory, prompting the Milan stock market to soar by nearly 4%.

But as the close result became clear the markets fell back. In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.55% and Asian markets lost between 0.7% and 2.2%.

The apparent split between left and right in the eurozone’s third largest economy is likely to cause great anxiety among leaders in other EU member states.

A period of horse-trading will now follow, and the leading blocs will try in turn to form a coalition.

But, with the electorate apparently so divided, many believe a second election will have to follow in a few months.

Silvio Berlusconi, 76, left office in November 2011, facing claims of economic mismanagement as the eurozone struggled to contain Italy’s debt crisis.

Italians have had more than a year of technocratic government under Mario Monti. But his attempts to reduce spending caused widespread public resentment and his decision to head a centrist list in the parliamentary elections attracted little more than 10% of the vote.

“Some supposed we’d get a slightly better result but I am very satisfied, we are very satisfied,” he said.

In a surge in support, Beppe Grillo’s anti-austerity Five Star Movement attracted 25.54% of the vote.

Correspondents say this was an extraordinary success for the Genoese comic, whose tours around the country throughout the election campaign – hurling insults against a discredited political class – resulted in his party performing well in both chambers.

“We’ve started a war of generations,” Beppe Grillo said in an audio statement on his website which taunted the leaders of the mainstream parties.

“They are all losers, they’ve been there for 25 to 30 years and they’ve led this country to catastrophe.”

As the extent of his success became clear on Monday night, Beppe Grillo’s supporters in his home town of Genoa celebrated early into Tuesday morning.

French family kidnapped in Cameroon shown in YouTube video

A video published on YouTube appears to show seven members of a French family, including four children, abducted by Islamist group Boko Haram in Cameroon.

The footage shows an armed man reading a statement in front of two men, a woman and four children.

Claiming to be from the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram, the alleged kidnappers demand the release of prisoners in Cameroon and Nigeria.

The family was snatched last Tuesday by gunmen on motorbikes.

Following the abduction, the French government said it believed the couple, their children aged five, eight, 10 and 12, and an uncle were taken across the border into Nigeria, probably by Boko Haram.

The family lives in the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde, where the father worked for the French gas group Suez. They had been returning from a visit to Waza National Park when they were kidnapped.

On Thursday, France confirmed it had “received information that the group Boko Haram is claiming to be holding the French family”.

“These images are terribly shocking and display cruelty without limits,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement.

In the video, one of the male hostages said they had been kidnapped by Jamaatu Ahlis Sunna Liddaawati wal-Jihad – the Arabic name for Boko Haram.

One of the alleged kidnappers warned that France had launched a war on Islam.

Behind him, the alleged family is shown flanked by two armed men in camouflage uniforms.

A source close to the family confirmed their identities to the AFP news agency.

Laurent Fabius said it was still trying to verify the authenticity of the video.

Last week, a French minister wrongly confirmed reports that the family had been found and released in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, French nationals have been urged to leave northern Cameroon “as quickly as possible”.

The French foreign ministry said on its website citizens were “officially advised not to go to the far north of Cameroon (the shores of Lake Chad in the South Maroua), and the border with Nigeria, until further notice”.

Boko Haram has staged many attacks across northern Nigeria in recent years, targeting churches, government buildings and the security forces.

Another Islamist group – Ansaru – is also active in the region.

Last Sunday, Ansaru claimed the abduction of seven foreign workers in Nigeria.

Italian, British, Greek and Lebanese workers are thought to be among those held after an attack on a construction project in Bauchi state.

Ansaru also says it is holding a French national, Francis Colump, who was seized in the northern state of Katsina.

Michelle Obama ASOS red and white check dress becomes sellout

After First Lady Michelle Obama wore a red and white check dress by online fashion retailer ASOS.com last year it quickly became a sellout.

Now fashionistas who missed out stealing Michelle Obama’s style the first time round can get their hands on the dress again as it has gone back on sale today.

The cotton skater dress is back in stock and currently available to buy for the bargain price of £55 ($85).

Michelle Obama, who regularly tops lists of the world’s best dressed women, has worn the sleeveless dress herself on more than one occasion.

Then last August when Michelle Obama joined her husband on the campaign trail as he sought re-election, she opted for the ASOS number again, this time wearing it with a wider black belt and ballet flats.

As if endorsement from the First Lady wearing it wasn’t enough, ASOS got even further free advertising when an image of Michelle Obama while wearing the dress while hugging Barack became the most shared picture in history on social networks.

Barack Obama’s campaign team posted the image that was taken over the summer on his Twitter and Facebook accounts when it was announced he had won another term as President, along with the caption “another four years”.

The president’ss online campaign manager told Time Magazine the picture was chosen because it summed up the “elation, relief and joy” they were all feeling at that historic moment.

The picture was then retweeted 816,000 times on Twitter shared more than 4 million times on Facebook – breaking records for both social networks.

ASOS was launched in 2000 with the aim of helping twenty-somethings replicate the style of the stars at affordable prices. Now more than a decade on, its success means they’re now setting the trends as well as following them.

Honey Boo Boo’s reality show set to take over the world

Honey Boo Boo’s reality show is set to take over the world as the beauty pageant queen and her colorful family have their show broadcast internationally, it was announced today.

Honey Boo Boo, aka Alana Thompson, has become famous in the US for her TLC series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo features the antics of the charming 7-year-old and her mom June Shannon, dad Sugar Bear, three older sisters and gay Uncle Poodle at the family home in McIntyre, Georgia.

The family has already been popular with viewers in Eastern Europe, leading the TV network to broaden the show’s reach.

In the next few months, Honey Boo Boo will appear on screens in Australia, the Netherlands, Italy and Latin America.

Luis Silberwasser, executive VP at Discovery Networks International, told the New York Post: “In Poland, where it just started airing, it’s already No. 3 in terms of viewers.

“This is a slice of Americana – not typical America, but of a particular family in the South, and the international audience knows that there are many facets to American lives.”

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo follows beauty pageant enthusiast Alana Thompson taking part in contests but also the family’s life in general including one disastrous Thanksgiving dinner, quad bike rides and her sisters bobbing for pig’s feet at the Redneck Games.

However, Honey Boo Boo’s unique catchphrases – including “a dolla’ makes me holla” and “you’d better redneck-ognize” – might prove a challenge for foreign viewers.

Discovery said that it is working on ways to overcome the lingo that might be lost in translation – as the show already subtitles for English-speaking audiences. Other options include dubbing voiceovers and developing a more in-depth glossary of terms.

Seth MacFarlane criticized for his Oscars hosting style

Family Guy writer and creator Seth MacFarlane was a risky choice as the host of this year Academy Awards.

Seth MacFarlane, 39, incurred the wrath of viewers during his joke stuffed monologue after he made an indirect reference to Skyfall singer Adele’s weight.

He said: “Rex Reed will be out here to review Adele’s performance of Skyfall.”

The funnyman left no facet of Hollywood untouched by his barbs as he hosted the 85th annual Academy Awards, as he joked about women, domestic violence, ageism, weight and the “hairy” Kardashians.

Seth MacFarlane began the broadcast looking totally relaxed; alone on the stage, he delivered a series of one-liners, many of which drew fire from critics and the internet community.

Starting off with a reference to the Oscar-nominated film Lincoln, Seth MacFarlane pondered about Daniel Day Lewis’ devotion to character, saying: “I would argue the actor who really got inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth.”

His tale took an uncomfortable turn when he brought up the issue of slavery: “Like, if you bumped into Don Cheadle on the studio lot, did you try to free him? How deep does your method go?”

Page Six scoffed at the aside, which got a cold audience reaction, by calling it “flat”.

While going through his list of perfunctory celebrity bashing jokes he also managed to make an inappropriate joke about 9-year-old nominee Quvenzhane Wallis and George Clooney.

“To give you an idea of how young she is, it’ll be 16 years until she’s too old for Clooney,” he said.

In his intro to presenters Jennifer Aniston and Channing Tatum, he accused the Friends star of having a dubious past.

“Of our next two presenters, at least one is honest about being a former exotic dancer. Please welcome Channing Tatum and Jennifer Aniston,” he quipped.

Twitter user Laura Hudson was among the thousands on the micro blogging site that found it hard to swallow his humour.

“I mean this Oscars ceremony also featured Jennifer Aniston getting called a stripper, a domestic violence joke,” she wrote.

Laura Hudson was referring to Seth MacFarlane’s most controversial barb. As he introduced Quentin Tarantino’s violent revenge western Django Unchained he described it as, “the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence – or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie”.

The reference to Chris Brown’s 2009 assault of Rihanna drew gasps from the audience in Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

Rihanna and Chris Brown have since been reunited, and recently attended the 2013 Grammy Awards together.

Huffington Post criticized the comedian for taking a dig at the sensitive topic: “Domestic violence is not like dating, Seth.”

Seth MacFarlane later targeted snubbed actor/director Ben Affleck saying: “The film’s director is unknown to the Academy.”

And again later in the program referring to Ben Affleck’s bearded appearance in the movie he quipped: “The first time I saw [Ben Affleck] with all that dark facial hair, I thought, <<My God, the Kardashians have made the jump to film>>; and even he had to admit afterward he wasn’t sure about the joke.

“The energy in the room cooled as the crowd laughed nervously, forcing him to reply with an assurance that the joke was ‘as bad as it gets, if it makes you feel better.”

“Oh no, that’s what we were afraid he would do,” he said, mimicking the audience’s response.

He followed it up with another Quentin Tarantino aimed jibe – the writer/director won the award for Best Screenplay on the night.

Talking about the film’s controversial overuse of the n-word, Seth MacFarlane drew silence from the crowd when he joked that the screenplay was “loosely based on Mel Gibson’s voicemails”.

Seth MacFarlane’s sock-puppet reenactment of Flight in which he wore a brown sock to represent Denzel Washington, also raised eyebrows from the conservative crowd.

“You’re a white guy in 2013,” said William Shatner to Seth MacFarlane.

“You can’t wear black hand.”

TODAY wrote: “White guys doing racial humor, no matter how gentle, still makes everyone uncomfortable.”

Website Gawker slammed the first time host as “unfunny, tired, self-centered and boring, but also incredibly homophobic and racist”.

But not everybody disliked seth MacFarlane’s presenting style.

“Loving that MacFarlane is attempting to preempt his #Oscars criticism,” Vanity Fair posted on their Twitter account Sunday.

The magazine was referring to William Shatner apparently predicting seth MacFarlane’s Oscar fail, telling him: “The show’s a disaster. Your jokes are tasteless and inappropriate and everyone ends up hating you.”

He then showed Seth MacFarlane a copy of a newspaper headline from the day after the awards that read “Seth MacFarlane Worst Oscar host ever”.

Playing innocent, Seth Macfarlane tried to defend himself and asked what he did wrong.

However, TV host Piers Morgan was quick to show his support for the comedian.

“This is unbelievably, unacceptably, gob-smackingly, hilariously inappropriate. Keep going. @SethMacFarlane.”

People Magazine also threw in some praise: “If you’re hating on Seth, just remember: He’s got Channing up there dancing.”

Russell Crowe tweeted: “Congratulations @SethMacFarlane , you did great mate, handled it all with grace, #topjob .”

And Steve Martin, who hosted the ceremony three times, in 2001, 2003, and 2010, tweeted: “Seth MacFarlane was wonderful and who knew? I did. But then, I wrote <<Cruel Shoes>>.”

The Office actor Rainn Wilson was also a fan of Seth Macfarlane’s presenting style, as were Kristin Chenoweth – who performed a musical number, Here’s to the Losers, to close the show.

Rainn Wilson wrote: “Truly, @SethMacFarlane did a great job. Funny, self-deprecating and surprisingly fresh.”

Kristin Chenoweth tweeted: “I had a blast tonight singing with @sethmacfarlane. He KILLED it! So good!”

In an effort to change the course of history, he used the remainder of his 15 minutes to redeem himself, starting with a sensual dance by Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum to his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight.

Billboard’s 2013 Top Money Makers: Madonna named highest-paid musician with $ 34.6 million earnings

Madonna has been named the highest-paid musician in 2012 by trade publication Billboard, beating Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters.

Madonna, 54, has topped the annual rundown of the top money-makers for the second time in five years.

The singer’s 88-date MDNA world tour, 2012’s most successful, helped her take home $34.6 million, Billboard said.

Concerts account for 68.9% of the total revenues for the 40 artists on the list, which estimates annual earnings.

According to the figures, compiled using Boxscore concert data and Nielsen SoundScan sales information, Bruce Springsteen came a close second.

Bruce Springsteen earned $33.4 million after touring to sold-out stadiums and arenas on the back of his number one album Wrecking Ball.

Strong merchandise sales helped with his earnings, with Bruce Springsteen’s live shows making up 92% of his overall revenue.

Roger Waters came third with earnings from his large scale The Wall Live tour estimated at $21 million.

Van Halen were in fourth position with $20 million after touring in support of their album A Different Kind of Truth.

Speaking about the list, Billboard editorial analyst Glenn Peoples said the most money “always comes from high-paying live performances”.

He said: “Ironically, the most popular touring artists are usually well past their peaks on the album sales charts.”

The rest of the top 10 included country music veteran Kenny Chesney in fifth, followed by the Dave Matthews Band, country’s Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean, and British band Coldplay.

Canadian teen star Justin Bieber completed the top 10, earning up to $16 million, of which $10 million came from his sold-out Believe tour.

“The entire top 10 averaged 84.2% of their income from concerts, and the number would have been higher, if not for Justin Bieber’s mere 60.1% share at number 10 dragging down the average,” said Glenn Peoples.

Madonna is the only woman in the top 10 after last year’s victor Taylor Swift fell to 15th place because she did not tour last year.

Taylor Swift still did well, earning $12.7 million from more than three million digital albums and 15.6 million digital songs.

Meanwhile, Adele, who had the biggest-selling album of the year in the US in 2011 and 2012, came in 11th place, earning $14 million.

Adele did not tour last year but took the year out to have a baby while her second album 21 continued to sell well in physical and digital formats.

2013 Top Money Makers

1 Madonna – $34.6 million

2 Bruce Springsteen – $33.4 million

3 Roger Waters – $21 million

4 Van Halen – $20 million

5 Kenny Chesney – $19.1 million

6 Dave Matthews Band – $18.9 million

7 Tim McGraw – $18.3 million

8 Jason Aldean – $17.6 million

9 Coldplay – $17.3 million

Michelle Obama Oscar gown digitally altered by Iranian Fars News Agency

Iranian Fars News Agency has digitally altered an image of Michelle Obama announcing the Oscar for Best Picture last night, in order to make her dress appear more modest.

The State-controlled Fars News Agency added a high neckline and cap sleeves to the silver Naeem Khan gown worn by Michelle Obama, who from the Diplomatic Room of the White House, remotely presented the award to Ben Affleck for his film Argo.

Michelle Obama’s image was Photoshopped in order that the garment would be in keeping with the country’s Islamic dress codes that require women not to expose too much skin.

Pre-Photoshop, one can see that the dress actually has a low neckline that stops short of exposing any cleavage, though it does show décolletage.

Instead of sleeves are inch-thick straps, exposing those toned shoulders and arms for which Michelle Obama, 49, is so well-known.

Accepting the Best Picture award last night, Ben Affleck said: “I thank you everyone in the movie, on the movie, worked on the movie, did anything with this movie gets thanked.

“I want to thank Canada. I want to thank our friends in Iran living in terrible circumstances right now.”

Argo is a dramatization of the real-life experience of CIA operative Tony Mendez, who led the rescue of six US diplomats from Tehran, during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

The film relates how Tony Mendez used a fake sci-fi movie as a cover to help the diplomats escape the country.

Iranian State television, however, dismissed the star’s Oscar-winning film today as an “advertisement for the CIA”.

The semiofficial Mehr news agency called the Academy Award “politically motivated” because Michelle Obama had joined Jack Nicholson via video link to help present the best picture prize.

And Mohammed Hosseini, Iran’s Culture Minister, said that Argo “distorted history” for propaganda purposes.

Argo has been banned from Iranian cinemas, but on the streets of Tehran there is a healthy trade in bootlegged copies, with DVDs selling for less than a dollar each.

The Onion posts vulgar tweet about Quvenzhané Wallis

Satirical news website The Onion came under fire after branding 9-year-old Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis as a “c***” on Twitter.

The Onion said in a post during last night’s Oscars ceremony: “Everybody else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c*** right?”

The tweet to The Onion’s millions of followers sparked outrage and was deleted around an hour later.

The post was met with a storm of complaints and demands for an apology from The Onion across social media.

Actor Wendell Pierce, who stars in Treme, described the tweet as an “abhorrent verbal attack of a child”, while another critic called for the writer behind the post to get “exactly what they deserve. From both the law and the street”.

Fans of the spoof website were among those expressing their distaste and disappointment at its use of the expletive in reference to Quvenzhané Wallis.

The Onion website features satirical articles based on national and international news. Its Twitter account has more than 4.5 million followers.

Quvenzhané Wallis was also at the heart of a second Twitter spat during the ceremony, after she was referred to as “Little Q” in coverage, prompting accusations of racism.

Football player Jermain Defoe has become a first time father after his ex-girlfriend Anne-Marie Moore gave birth to a baby boy earlier this week.

Anne-Marie Moore, who Jermain Defoe dated briefly last year after splitting from Alexandra Burke, welcomed son Joshua-James Defoe on Tuesday.

Jermain Defoe, 30, was reportedly present at the birth and has seen his son everyday since.

A source told The Sun: “Jermain is thrilled to be a dad. It matures a person and he is determined to live up to his responsibilities.”

Jermain Defoe and Anne-Marie Moore revealed they were expecting a boy several months ago after briefly rekindling their romance in 2012.

The England football star, who was dumped by Alexandra Burke in May after he allegedly cheated on the singer, got back together with Anne-Marie Moore soon after.

Although Jermain Defoe and Anne-Marie Moore are no longer an item, notorious ladies’ man Jermain will reportedly stick by her side and help support the baby.

But the source adds that Jermain Defoe’s “wild side in his twenties” is now over.

Oscar 2013: Maria Menounos gets fitted in a public restroom

Maria Menounos’ ensemble looked like a disaster waiting to happen before she was even on her way to the Academy Awards ceremony.

Maria Menounos looked great in a bright pink bandeau floor-length gown which she wore with her hair in a bouffant style.

She had to take on an awkward position as she got in the car to make her way to the ceremony though as the design was somewhat uncomfortable for her.

Maria Menounos posted alongside an Instagram picture: “This is how I have to sit in the car..the dress has a bustier that’s stabbing me! Hahah.”

She explained that choosing and trying on the frock was not done in the most traditional way, meaning she wouldn’t be able to see the predicament coming.

Maria Menounos posted alongside a snap of her outfit in a small restroom cubicle: “I did my Oscar fitting in the bathroom at the bev hills hotel yesterday…”

Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre-left ahead in early exit polls

Early exit polls from Italy’s general election show a lead for the centre-left bloc led by Pier Luigi Bersani.

The polls suggest Pier Luigi Bersani’s alliance has taken around 34% of the vote for parliament’s lower house, ahead of Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right group with 29%, Sky Italia reports.

Beppe Grillo’s protest movement is projected to take nearly 20% of votes.

The two-day vote is seen as crucial for efforts to tackle Italy’s economic problems, as well as for the eurozone.

The election was called two months ahead of schedule, after Silvio Berlusconi’s party withdrew its support for Mario Monti’s technocratic government.

The first results based on partial vote counts are due in the next few hours.

If the exit polls are confirmed, they would echo the opinion polls prior to the election which made Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) a consistent frontrunner at nearly 35%.

Pier Luigi Bersani, a former Communist, has pledged to continue with the tough reforms of Mario Monti’s technocratic government, but suggests current European policy needs to do more to promote growth and jobs.

Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom (PdL) centre-right alliance had narrowed the PD lead in the final weeks of campaigning – and may yet prevent Pier Luigi Bersani from winning an overall majority in the Senate, which is being fought on a region-by-region basis.

The fiercely anti-establishment Five Star movement of former comedian Beppe Grillo drew wide and growing support during the campaign, and threatened to be the major upset for the election.

Quvenzhane Wallis, the youngest Oscar nominee, has been confirmed for the title role in the new Annie film.

Quvenzhane Wallis, 9, will star in the remake, which is being executive produced by Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Originally Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter, 12-year-old Willow, was due to play the lead character.

Willow Smith stood down from the role saying that she wanted to concentrate on enjoying her childhood.

Annie is due to be released in late 2014 and is based on the stage play about an orphan girl trying to find her family.

The original musical was released as a film in 1982 and featured the song Tomorrow.

This new version will be set in modern day New York with a selection of new songs added and some old ones removed.

Actress and writer Emma Thompson has been working on the screenplay.

Speaking to Newsbeat last year, Emma Thompson confirmed that Tomorrow would be included in the updated film.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien steps down as leader of Scottish Catholic Church

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Britain’s most senior Roman Catholic cleric, is stepping down as leader of the Scottish Catholic Church.

The move follows allegations – which he contests – of inappropriate behavior towards priests dating from the 1980s.

In a statement, Cardinal Keith O’Brien apologized to those he had offended during his ministry.

The cardinal confirmed he would not take part in the election for a successor to Pope Benedict XVI – leaving Britain unrepresented in the election.

The Vatican confirmed that the cardinal has stepped down from his post.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien said in his statement he had already tendered his resignation as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, due to take effect when he turned 75 next month, but Pope Benedict “has now decided that my resignation will take effect today”.

He said the pontiff would appoint an apostolic administrator to govern the archdiocese in his place until his successor is appointed.

The cardinal also said: “I have valued the opportunity of serving the people of Scotland and overseas in various ways since becoming a priest.

“Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended.

“I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me – but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor.

“However, I will pray with them and for them that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they will make the correct choice for the future good of the Church.”

Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s role as Britain’s only representative in the papal election next month would have been one of his last acts before he retired.

The Observer reported that the three priests and one former priest – from the diocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh – complained to the Pope’s representative to Britain, nuncio Antonio Mennini, in the week before February 11, when Pope Benedict announced his resignation, of what they claimed was the cardinal’s inappropriate behavior towards them in the 1980s.

The former priest claims Cardinal Keith O’Brien made an inappropriate approach to him in 1980, after night prayers, when he was a seminarian at St Andrew’s College, Drygrange.

The complainant says he resigned as a priest when Cardinal Keith O’Brien was first made a bishop.

A second statement from another complainant says he was living in a parish when he was visited by Keith O’Brien, and inappropriate contact took place between them.

A third complainant alleges dealing with what he describes as “unwanted behavior” by the cardinal in the 1980s after some late-night drinking.

And the fourth complainant claims the cardinal used night prayers as an excuse for inappropriate contact.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said: “It would be a great pity if a lifetime of positive work was lost from comment in the circumstances of his resignation.

“None of us know the outcome of the investigation into the claims made against him but I have found him to be a good man for his church and country.”

Jack Valero, from Catholic Voices, a media lobby group that represents many Catholics in the UK, says the allegations against the cardinal have been handled properly.

“I think it’s right that he’s resigned, faced with these allegations.

“I am very happy that they have been taken seriously, that the nuncio – who is the Pope’s representative in the UK – has written to the four people who have made the allegations to thank them for speaking out, and that the whole thing has been done so quickly. I think this shows a new spirit.”

Colin MacFarlane, director of gay rights group Stonewall Scotland, which last year named the cardinal as Bigot of the Year said: “We trust there will be a full investigation into the serious allegations made against Cardinal Keith O’Brien.

“We hope that his successor will show a little more Christian charity towards openly gay people than the cardinal did himself.”

Clifford Longley, a religious commentator and columnist for the Catholic newspaper The Tablet, said the cardinal’s resignation was “devastating”.

“The worst thing that could possibly have happened to the church at this moment is to have another row like this when there already so many going on,” he said.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien missed celebrating Sunday Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh, which marked Pope Benedict’s eight years in office, ahead of the pontiff stepping down this week.

Last week Cardinal Keith O’Brien said he believed priests should be able to marry if they wished to do so, saying the new Pope could consider whether the Roman Catholic Church should change its stance on some issues not of divine origin.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien:

  • Born on 17 March 1938 in Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
  • Ordained a priest on 3 April 1965
  • Obtained a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Edinburgh and a diploma in education

Pope Benedict XVI changes law on conclave

Vatican has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has amended Roman Catholic Church law so that the conclave selecting his successor can be brought forward.

The change to the constitution means cardinals will no longer have to wait 15 days after the papacy becomes vacant before beginning the conclave.

As a result, the conclave can now start before March 15.

Pope Benedict’s resignation, the first by a pope in nearly 600 years, takes effect on Thursday, February 28.

His decision surprised many within the Catholic Church.

“I leave the College of Cardinals the possibility to bring forward the start of the conclave once all cardinals are present, or push the beginning of the election back by a few days should there be serious reasons,” the Pope said in a statement read by his spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi.

Vatican officials explained that the change was partly due to the fact that the church constitution was written principally for a conclave following the death of a pope, rather than a resignation.

The decision on the date of the beginning of the conclave will be taken by the cardinals but will not happen earlier than March 1st, officials said.

A conclave beginning in mid-March would have left little time to have a new pope installed for one of the most important periods in the Catholic calendar, as Easter Holy Week begins on March 24.

The news about the timing of the conclave comes as the Pope accepted the resignation of the Roman Catholic Church’s highest cleric in Scotland, Cardinal Keith O’Brien.

It follows allegations – which he contests – of inappropriate behavior towards priests dating from the 1980s.

Vatican officials said that his Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s resignation was linked to the fact that he was approaching his 75th birthday and the Pope was keen to accept resignations and get business going ahead of his own resignation taking effect.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien has confirmed he will not take part in the conclave to elect Benedict’s successor.

Vatican officials said that no decision had been yet taken on how the Pope should be referred to during the period between popes.

Horsemeat found in IKEA meatballs

Ikea has decided to halt sales of its meatballs in Sweden after meatballs set for sale at its stores in the Czech Republic were found to contain horsemeat.

The discovery comes as European Union agriculture ministers meet in Brussels for talks widely expected to focus on the growing horsemeat scandal.

Inspectors in the Czech Republic said horsemeat was found in meatballs made in Sweden labelled as beef and pork.

The scandal began last month with frozen meals and burgers.

It spread from the UK and Ireland, with traces of horsemeat and horse DNA being found in food across the EU.

Supermarkets across Europe have had to withdraw affected prepared meals from their shelves.

Some 760kg (1,675 lb) of the Swedish-style meatballs were intercepted and stopped from reaching Czech shelves, officials told the Associated Press.

Horsemeat was also found in beef burgers imported from Poland, the Czech State Veterinary Administration said.

The labelling of the origin of meat and the traceability of the products will be high on the agenda at the EU ministers meeting.

Europe’s food retailers depend on a complex network of brokers, cold stores and meat-cutting plants around the continent from which to source the ingredients wherever they are cheapest.

The evidence of the past few weeks shows that national food safety authorities have failed to identify a problem in the supply chain over a significant period of time, he adds.

While the original agenda of the EU meeting included support for rural communities and the common fisheries policy, it is expected ministers will now try to come up with measures to tackle the horsemeat scandal.

Those could include a pan-European labelling project for frozen food, a move which has the backing of France and Germany.

Paris and Berlin both want compulsory labelling and traceability.

At least a dozen countries are involved in the horsemeat affair, which implicates some of the biggest meat processors and food producers.

Italy joined the list on Saturday, reporting horsemeat in some lasagne products.

On Friday, Germany’s consumer affairs ministry announced it had found traces of horse DNA in 67 of 830 food products tested.

Irish authorities on Friday suspended production at one processing plant after horsemeat was found labelled as beef.

Rodinia: Fragments of ancient continent buried beneath Indian Ocean

A new study suggests that fragments of an ancient continent called Rodinia are buried beneath the floor of the Indian Ocean.

Researchers have found evidence for a landmass that would have existed between 2,000 and 85 million years ago.

The strip of land, which scientists have called Mauritia, eventually fragmented and vanished beneath the waves as the modern world started to take shape.

The study is published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Until about 750 million years ago, the Earth’s landmass was gathered into a vast single continent called Rodinia.

And although they are now separated by thousands of kilometres of ocean, India was once located next to Madagascar.

Now researchers believe they have found evidence of a sliver of continent – known as a microcontinent – that was once tucked between the two.

The team came to this conclusion after studying grains of sand from the beaches of Mauritius.

While the grains dated back to a volcanic eruption that happened about nine million years ago, they contained minerals that were much older.

Professor Trond Torsvik, from the University of Oslo, Norway, said: “We found zircons that we extracted from the beach sands, and these are something you typically find in a continental crust. They are very old in age.”

The zircon dated to between 1,970 and 600 million years ago, and the team concluded that they were remnants of ancient land that had been dragged up to the surface of the island during a volcanic eruption.

Prof. Trond Torsvik said that he believed pieces of Mauritia could be found about 10 km down beneath Mauritius and under a swathe of the Indian Ocean.

It would have spanned millions years of history, from the Precambrian Era when land was barren and devoid of life to the age when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

But about 85 million years ago, as India started to drift away from Madagascar towards its current location, the microcontinent would have broken up, eventually disappearing beneath the waves.

However, a small part could have survived.

“At the moment the Seychelles is a piece of granite, or continental crust, which is sitting practically in the middle of the Indian Ocean,” explained Prof. Trond Torsvik.

“But once upon a time, it was sitting north of Madagascar. And what we are saying is that maybe this was much bigger, and there are many of these continental fragments that are spread around in the ocean.”

Further research is needed to fully investigate what remains of this lost region.

Prof. Trond Torsvik explained: “We need seismic data which can image the structure… this would be the ultimate proof. Or you can drill deep, but that would cost a lot of money.”

Emilio Fernández: model behind the iconic Oscar gold statue

Mexican actor Emilio Fernández was the model for iconic Oscar statue, which he posed for in 1928.

Emilio Fernández was recruited by Mexican actress, Hollywood star, and future wife Dolores del Rio when then MGM chief art director Cedric Gibbons said he was looking for a model to help design the trophy.

At the time Emilio Fernández was living in Los Angeles after a failed military revolt in Mexico.

Dolores del Rio thought he had the perfect physique for Cedric Gibbons’ vision of a Crusader Knight.

Though initially reluctant, Emilio Fernández was eventually persuaded to strip down and pose with a large sword, giving us the famous golden statue coveted by actors ever since.

It wasn’t given the nickname “Oscar” until 1939.

Emilio Fernández was born in Coahuila, Mexico, in 1904 and worked his whole life in films, acting, directing, and writing for the screen.

He appeared in several classic films including 1947’s The Fugitive, 1964’s The Night of the Iguana, and 1974’s Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.

Oscars 2013: Jennifer Lawrence falls flat as she steps to accept Best Actress award

Jennifer Lawrence was left flustered after tripping up the steps on her way to accept her Oscar for Best Actress.

As Jennifer Lawrence staggered to her feet the star-studded audience leapt up to give the blushing actress a standing ovation, much to her embarrassment.

“Thank you so much,” she told them.

“This is nuts. You guys are only standing up because I fell and you feel bad. That was embarrassing.”

Jennifer Lawrence also thanked her Silver Linings Playbook co-stars, crew and team for their support before wishing her fellow nominee, Amour star Emmanuelle Riva a happy 86th birthday.

Dressed in a stunning off-white strapless Dior Haute Couture gown, Jennifer Lawrence’s accident happened as she rushed to the stage still shocked by her win.

As she fell on her knees Jennifer Lawrence momentarily held her head in her hands, but quickly carried on.

A smiling Hugh Jackman rushed to help Jennifer Lawrence, holding out his hand to escort her safely to the podium.

Despite her initial embarrassment the 22-year-old quickly laughed off the incident and began her stream of thank yous.

Perhaps Jennifer Lawrence’s quick recovery is due to the fact that she’s been in a very similar situation before.

At the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards Jennifer Lawrence’s midnight blue Dior gown appeared to fall apart as she climbed the stairs.

Then Dior explained that the dress was made in layers, with Jennifer Lawrence simply hitching up the top layer to reveal her legs.

This time the unfortunate incident could have been even worse.

The new face of Miss Dior admitted she’d actually cut off six inches from the train of the dress before the show.

“It would have been too insane,” Jennifer Lawrence told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.

Still, the dress was long enough to hide her feet and high heels, which she said she would love to take off if nobody would notice.

Jennifer Lawrence also revealed she had a very stressful day before the event and admitted she hadn’t had time to eat.

“I’m freaking starving,” she said.

She then pointed longingly to McDonald’s down Hollywood Boulevard and jokingly asked her publicist to swing by and pick her up a burger.

“Today was so stressful. There was everybody in, my family got ready at my house.

“I felt like Steve Martin in Father of the Bride with all the furniture being moved around my house.”

Park Geun-hye, the first woman to lead South Korea, sworn in as president

Park Geun-hye was sworn in as South Korea’s president promising a tough stance on national security and an era of economic revival.

Park Geun-hye, who defeated liberal rival Moon Jae-in in December’s general election, took the oath of office in front of tens of thousands of people.

North Korea’s recent nuclear test posed a “challenge to the survival” of the Korean people, she said.

Trust-building was needed to tackle the “extremely serious” security situation.

Park Geun-hye, 61, the first woman to lead South Korea, succeeds President Lee Myung-bak, of the same Saenuri Party, who stepped down as the law required after a five-year term.

She is the daughter of former military strongman Park Chung-hee, who ruled South Korea for almost two decades.

Park Geun-hye takes office amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula in the wake of a North Korean nuclear test, on February 12.

In her inauguration speech, Park Geun-hye said she would “not tolerate any action that threatens the lives of our people and the security of our nation”.

“North Korea’s recent nuclear test is a challenge to the survival and future of the Korean people, and there should be no mistake that the biggest victim will be none other than North Korea itself.”

Calling on North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions, she said that in a challenging security environment South Korea could not “afford to remain where we are”.

A trust-building process was needed, she said, promising to move forward “step-by-step on the basis of credible deterrence”.

“Trust can be built through dialogue and by honoring promises that have already been made,” she said.

“It is my hope that North Korea will abide by international norms and make the right choice so that the trust-building process on the Korean Peninsula can move forward.”

Park Geun-hye was sworn in as South Korea’s president promising a tough stance on national security and an era of economic revival

North Korea’s nuclear test – its third – followed its apparently successful launch of a three-stage rocket to put a satellite into orbit in December. That launch was condemned by the US Security Council as a banned test of missile technology; diplomatic efforts to agree a response to the nuclear test are ongoing.

Ties between the two Koreas chilled considerably under Lee Myung-bak over his move to link aid to concessions on the nuclear issue. Ahead of the election Park Geun-hye had spoken out on the need for more dialogue but the recent nuclear test may make it harder for her to appear conciliatory towards Pyongyang, observers say.

On the economy, Park Geun-hye promised more focus on a “creative economy” founded in “economic democratization” that would expand beyond existing markets and sectors.

South Korea’s economic growth has slowed, the population is rapidly ageing, and demands for a fairer division of wealth are now being voiced on both sides of the political divide.

Policies would be brought in to help small and medium-sized enterprises flourish, Park Geun-hye said.

“By rooting out various unfair practices and rectifying the misguided habits of the past… we will provide active support to ensure that everyone can live up to their fullest potential,” she added, in an apparent nod to resentment towards the country’s giant “chaebol” conglomerates.

She also promised a “clean, transparent and competent government”.

“I will endeavor to shed popular distrust of government and strive to elevate the capital of trust,” she said.

Park Geun-hye:

  • Daughter of former President Park Chung-hee
  • Served as South Korea’s first lady after her mother was murdered by a North Korean gunman in 1974
  • First elected to the national assembly in 1998
  • First bid for the presidency in 2007
  • Has promised to redistribute wealth, reform big conglomerates and seek greater engagement with North Korea

Vladimir Putin signs law banning smoking in public

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a tough new bill into law banning smoking in public.

Under the new legislation, smoking in restaurants, long-distance trains and housing block entrance halls will be illegal.

The government has made reducing smoking one of the cornerstones of its bid to improve public health.

Russia has one of the highest smoking rates in the world, with more than four in 10 Russians considered smokers.

Parliament passed the bill earlier in February, with only one deputy in the State Duma voting against the legislation.

The law “On protecting the health of citizens from the danger of passive smoking and the consequences of the use of tobacco” will come into force on June 1.

On that date, smoking will be banned within 15 m of entrances to stations, airports, metro stations and ports; in workplaces; in entrances to apartment blocks; and in children’s playgrounds and on beaches.

Exactly one year later, smoking will be banned on long-distance trains and ships; in hotels; in restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and markets; and on suburban railway platforms.

Under the bill, a minimum retail price will be set for tobacco and its sale and advertising will be restricted.

The legislation meets some of the recommendations outlined in a World Health Organization report on smoking in Russia published in 2011.

According to that report, the retail price of a pack of 20 of the cheapest brand of cigarettes in 2010 was 11 roubles ($0.36; 0.27 euros) while a popular Western brand sold for 48 roubles ($1.6; 1.2 euros).

Raul Castro to step down as Cuba’s president in 2018

Cuba’s President Raul Castro has announced he will stand down at the end of his second term in 2018, following his re-election by the National Assembly.

Raul Castro, 81, formally assumed the presidency in 2008 – two years after replacing his ailing brother Fidel.

The Communist assembly, whose members ran for office unopposed, also chose Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez as Raul Castro’s first vice-president.

Miguel Diaz-Canel, 52, is widely seen as Raul Castro’s successor.

On Sunday, 86-year-old Fidel Castro – who was in power for five decades – made a rare public appearance at the opening session of the assembly in the capital Havana.

The Castros have been running Cuba under a one-party system since the 1959 revolution, which ousted the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

Addressing the assembly following his re-election on Sunday, Raul Castro said: “This will be my last term.”

He had earlier called for a two-term limit and age caps for political offices, including the presidency.

But it is the first time he publicly said he would be stepping aside in 2018.

During his years in power, Raul Castro eased some restrictions on personal freedoms by lifting bans on mobile phones and home computers, and abolished the need of citizens to buy expensive exit visas when travelling abroad as tourists.

However, in his speech, he stressed: “I was not chosen to be president to restore capitalism to Cuba. I was elected to defend, maintain and continue to perfect socialism, not destroy it.”

Cuba has struggled economically since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1991 and now relies heavily on the support of the left-wing government of Venezuela.

Havana’s relationship with the US remains hostile – the two countries have no diplomatic relations and a decades-long American economic blockade is still in effect.

Until his promotion, Miguel Diaz-Canel was one of the eight vice-presidents on the council of ministers.

An electrical engineer by training, he rose through the Communist party ranks in the provinces and at one time served as education minister.

He would succeed Raul Castro if he is unable to serve his second full term in office.

Earlier in the day Raul Castro’s arrival, together with Fidel, and was warmly greeted by more than 600 assembly members.

Foreign press was barred from the opening ceremony.

Before Sunday, Fidel Castro was last seen in public earlier this month. Correspondents say he appeared frail and stooped at the time.

Fidel Castro has given up all his official positions, except his post as the assembly’s deputy leader.
