Stephen Baldwin avoids jail after admitting tax evasion

Stephen Baldwin has avoided a jail sentence after admitting income tax evasion in Rockland County Court.

Actor Stephen Baldwin, 46, admitted failing to pay New York state income taxes for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

A plea bargain was reached to enable Stephen Baldwin’s record to be wiped clean if he pays back $300,000 within a year.

Failure to pay within that time will result in a five-year sentence of probation.

Such a sentence would require the actor to complete five years under supervision and following certain conditions.

The full repayment would be expected to be made during that probation period.

Stephen Baldwin’s total bill including taxes, interest and penalties is $400,000 but state Supreme Court Justice Charles Apotheker said $100,000 had already been paid.

The star said he never intended to avoid paying taxes and got into trouble by trusting others.

“Unfortunately, I got some really bad suggestions and advice … from lawyers and accountants,” Stephen Baldwin said outside court.

“I just look forward to getting the $300,000 paid in the next year,” he added.

Stephen Baldwin is the youngest brother of the Baldwin acting dynasty which includes Alec, William and Daniel.

Married with two daughters, Stephen Baldwin became a born-again Christian following the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

His early career included roles in acclaimed films such as Last Exit to Brooklyn and Born on the Fourth of July.

More recently Stephen Baldwin has appeared in a number of TV reality shows including the US version of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here in 2009 and Britain’s Celebrity Big Brother in 2010.

Stephen Baldwin is currently appearing in All-Star Celebrity Apprentice and also co-hosts a US radio show with conservative pundit Kevin McCullough.

Pope Francis delivers plea for world peace in his first Easter Sunday speech

Pope Francis has delivered his first Easter Sunday message since being elected with a passionate plea for peace.

The newly-elected Pope used his “Urbi et Orbi” address to call for peace in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and across the globe.

Pope Francis singled out “dear Syria”, saying: “How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must there still be before a political solution is found?”

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar and pilgrims have attended church across the world.

Pope Francis has delivered his first Easter Sunday message since being elected with a passionate plea for peace

In his Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) speech, Pope Francis, 76, began with a simple “Happy Easter!”

The pontiff, who has begun his tenure by emphasizing humility, went on: “Christ has risen! What a joy it is for me to announce this message… I would like it to go out to every house and every family, especially where the suffering is greatest, in hospitals, in prisons.”

Later in his speech, the Pope said: “We ask the risen Jesus, who turns death into life, to change hatred into love, vengeance into forgiveness, war into peace.”

Pope Francis then mentioned troubled regions of the world in turn.

“Peace for the Middle East, and particularly between Israelis and Palestinians, who struggle to find the road of agreement, that they may willingly and courageously resume negotiations to end a conflict that has lasted all too long.

“Peace in Iraq, that every act of violence may end, and above all for dear Syria, for its people torn by conflict and for the many refugees who await help and comfort.”

For Africa, the Pope referred to Mali, Nigeria – “where attacks sadly continue” – the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

He added: “Peace in Asia, above all on the Korean peninsula: may disagreements be overcome and a renewed spirit of reconciliation grow.”

Pope Francis concluded by saying: “Peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain, wounded by the selfishness which threatens human life and the family, selfishness that continues in human trafficking, the most extensive form of slavery in this 21st Century.”

The new Pope has reinforced his image as a man of simple, down-to-earth tastes, not wearing the more ostentatious of papal costumes and, for the moment, not moving into the grandiose papal apartments.

Mali army attacked by Islamist rebels in Timbuktu

Mali’s army has been fighting Islamist rebels in the northern city of Timbuktu after a suicide bomber attempted to attack an army checkpoint.

The bomber was killed before he could detonate his bomb on Saturday evening.

This was followed by militant attempts to infiltrate the city.

The army, backed by French air power, then moved against the Islamists.

Mali’s army has been fighting Islamist rebels in the northern city of Timbuktu after a suicide bomber attempted to attack an army checkpoint

Earlier this year French troops pushed Islamists out of much of northern Mali but sporadic fighting has continued.

“The fighting is heavy and it is ongoing,” Malian army Capt. Modibo Naman Traore told the Reuters news agency, adding that the army was in the process of “encircling” the militants.

At least one Malian soldier and two civilians were wounded in Saturday’s fighting according to the city’s mayor.

The number of casualties following Sunday’s fighting remains unknown.

The people of Timbuktu had barricaded themselves in their homes after a group of Islamists infiltrated a western neighborhood of the city overnight.

The French left the Malian army on the front line for hours before they intervened and finished the job.

Several residents reported a French jet firing on rebel positions.

Another militant attack on the northern town of Gao was repelled on Monday.

Islamist rebels seized much of northern Mali a year ago after a military coup in the capital Bamako.

France intervened militarily in January amid fears that the militants were preparing to advance on Bamako. It currently has about 4,000 troops in Mali.

Since the intervention began, major cities including Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu have been recaptured but fighting is still continuing in desert mountains.

Malian army and troops from several African countries, including 2,000 from Chad, have also been involved in the fighting.

France plans to withdraw its troops from Mali in April, with West African countries expected to take over in the run-up to elections due in July.

Nelson Mandela health status: Churches across South Africa holding prayers for Madiba’s recovery

Churches across South Africa are holding prayers for former President Nelson Mandela, who has been in hospital for four days being treated for pneumonia.

Several hundred people gathered at the Regina Mundi church in Soweto – once a focal point of the struggle against apartheid.

On Saturday, South Africa’s presidency said Nelson Mandela, 94, was breathing without difficulty.

It said excess fluid had been drained from the lungs to ease his breathing.

There are no details yet on how long he will remain in hospital and no statement on his condition has been given for the past 24 hours.

After Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital late on Wednesday, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma said people “must not panic”.

Nelson Mandela contracted tuberculosis in the 1980s while detained on windswept Robben Island.

His lungs are said to have been damaged while working in a prison quarry. This latest spell in hospital is his fourth in just over two years.

Nelson Mandela served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999 and is regarded by many as the father of the nation for leading the struggle against apartheid.

The statement read by presidential spokesman, Mac Maharaj, on Saturday said that Nelson Mandela had been admitted to hospital “due to a recurrence of pneumonia”.

It said: “Doctors advised that due to the lung infection, former President Mandela had developed a pleural effusion which was tapped. This has resulted in him now being able to breathe without difficulty.

“He continues to respond to treatment and is comfortable.”

Mac Maharaj, a prisoner on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela in the 1960s and 70s, said the presidency “would like to acknowledge and thank all who have been praying for, and sending messages of support for, Madiba and his family.”

Madiba is Mandela’s clan name and is widely used to refer to him.

The hospital Nelson Mandela is attending has not been disclosed.

Last December Nelson Mandela was treated for a lung infection and gallstones – his longest period in hospital since leaving prison in 1990.

In February, the former president was treated for a stomach condition.

When asked whether people should prepare for the inevitable, President Jacob Zuma said: “In Zulu, when someone passes away who is very old, people say he or she has gone home. I think those are some of the things we should be thinking about.”

But the president stressed that Nelson Mandela had been able to handle the situation “very well” so far.

South Africans have been praying for the recovery of Nelson Mandela, who remains a moral beacon in the country despite withdrawing from public life almost a decade ago.

Despite his long imprisonment, Nelson Mandela forgave his former enemies and as president urged South Africans of all races to work together and seek reconciliation.

In 1993 Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

His main home is in Qunu, a small rural village in Eastern Cape province, where he says he spent the happiest days of his childhood.

However, doctors said in December Nelson Mandela should remain at his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton to be close to medical facilities.

The floods caused chaos in Port Louis, with a huge traffic jam paralyzing its centre, L’Express de Mauritius newspaper reported.

The bodies of six people were recovered from a pedestrian subway and another two from an underground car park.

More rain is expected on Sunday, and people have been advised to stay at home.

Dr. Scott Harrington: Risk of HIV and hepatitis B and C infection for 7,000 patients of Tulsa dentist

Oklahoma health officials have warned 7,000 patients their dentist may have exposed them to HIV and hepatitis B and C.

Patients of Dr. W. Scott Harrington’s practice in Tulsa were advised to test themselves at a free clinic set up by the state, health officials said.

Health inspectors found rusty dental instruments and poor hygiene standards at the clinic.

Oklahoma health officials have warned 7,000 patients their dentist may have exposed them to HIV and hepatitis B and C

Dr. W. Scott Harrington has voluntarily closed the practice, officials said.

“Although we do not know whether you were personally exposed to blood-borne viruses,” the state health department wrote to patients, “there is a possibility that you may have been exposed to infectious material.”

The letters are being sent to patients treated since 2007, but health officials have said they do not know who may have been seen by the dentist before that.

The Tulsa Health Department is setting up a clinic to carry out free blood tests for people who may have been exposed.

Former patient Joyce Baylor, 69, who had a tooth removed by Dr. Scott Harrington about 18 months ago, said the office looked clean.

“I’m sure he’s not suffering financially that he can’t afford instruments,” she told the Associated Press news agency.

The investigation into the dental practice began after a patient tested positive for both hepatitis C and HIV despite having no associated risk factors.

Officials determined the patient had received dental treatment about the time the exposure was believed to have occurred.

The dentist has voluntarily given up his licence, closed his practice and is co-operating with investigators, the Tulsa Health Department said.

Dr. Scott Harrington faces a hearing on April 19 and could have his licence revoked permanently.

Last week a suspect in the killing of the head of Colorado’s department of corrections died in a shootout with police in Texas.

Authorities are investigating whether any of the cases may be linked.

No arrests have been made over Mark Hasse’s killing but police are reportedly looking into a link between his death and the killing on March 19 of Colorado prisons chief Tom Clements.

Speaking of the latest killing, Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh told the Dallas Morning News: “It is a shock. It was a shock with Mark Hasse, and now you can just imagine the double shock and until we know what happened, I really can’t confirm that it’s related, but you always have to assume until it’s proven otherwise.”

The lead suspect in Tom Clements’ shooting, Evan Spencer Ebel, died in a shootout with police in Decatur, around 85 miles from Kaufman, on March 21.

Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, was a former Colorado prison inmate and was linked to a white supremacist group in prison called the 211 Crew.

Kaufman County district attorney’s office had been one of several agencies involved in the investigation of two members of another white supremacist group on racketeering charges earlier this year.

Mike McLelland had previously had a 23-year career in the army, according the biography on his website, and had five children.

Pope Francis celebrates his first Easter Sunday since election

Pope Francis celebrates his first Easter Sunday since his election, with an open-air Mass in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

The Pope will then deliver an “Urbi et Orbi” address from a balcony of St Peter’s.

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar.

At an Easter vigil Mass in St Peter’s, Pope Francis appealed to non-believers and lapsed Catholics to “step forward” towards God.

“Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life! If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward,” Pope Francis said.

“He will receive you with open arms.”

At the start of the service, the basilica was kept dark to signify Jesus’ tomb before what Christians believe was his resurrection. Pope Francis and the congregation held candles.

The service was shorter than usual, which the Vatican said was in line with Pope Francis’ preference for shorter Masses.

Pope Francis, formerly Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected on March 13, becoming the first non-European pope for almost 1,300 years.

He replaced Pope Benedict XVI, who held the office for eight years and became the first pontiff in more than 700 years to resign, saying he no longer had the physical strength to continue.

Pope Francis, 76, has already set a new style at the Vatican, reaching out easily to ordinary people and expressing his thoughts in a conversational way that is easy to understand.

He has surprised many of the clerics who work at the Vatican, eating in a communal dining room with other priests and clearly finding much traditional Vatican ceremonial tedious.

Rather than moving into grand papal apartments, Pope Francis has remained in a Vatican guesthouse, where he has been inviting ordinary people to morning Mass.

In the days before Easter, Pope Francis reached out to women and Muslims.

During a Holy Thursday Mass at a youth detention centre he washed and kissed the feet of 12 people, including two girls and two Muslims, and in a Good Friday procession referred to the “friendship of our Muslim brothers and sisters” in the Middle East.

After Easter, Pope Francis will have to begin tackling the key issues facing the Church, such as the Vatican bureaucracy, the future of the Vatican bank and the clerical sexual abuse scandal.

Vatican watchers will be keeping a keen eye on new appointments to key positions.

The patrol was routine and an investigation is under way.

The poaching of rhinos is rampant in South Africa. Their horns are sold in Asia, where some believe they have medicinal purposes, although there is no evidence to support it.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation quoted Brig. Gen. Xolani Mabanga as saying that the Agusta A1-0-9 light utility helicopter had come down at around 20:00 local time on Saturday, killing all five people on board.

General Xolani Mabanga said the ministry of defence extended condolences to the families of the deceased, all members of the South African National Defence Force.

Snooki’s Celebaby Report: Tips for Kim Kardashian on how to look glam during labor

Speaking as “MTV’s celebrity baby correspondent”, Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi offered some tips for Kim Kardashian, whose pregnancy has been highly watched by her fans and the media.

In a video on her blog called “Snooki’s Celebrity Baby Report”, the pint-sized reality star dished out some much needed advice for Kim Kardashian.

“I know everything there is to know about how to look glam during labor,” Snooki wrote in the accompanying blog.

Snooki gave birth to her first child, Lorenzo, and is now offering advice for mom-to-be Kim Kardashian
Snooki gave birth to her first child, Lorenzo, and is now offering advice for mom-to-be Kim Kardashian

“It’s a b****, but it’s worth it!”

Snooki, 25, whose labor took a painstaking 27 hours to complete, said she spent the time putting on make-up and watching cartoons.

“First impressions are everything, so when you meet your baby for the first time, you have to be flawless.”

She also warned to take into account the color palette in the hospital room – whose “boring white walls” are “not a good look”.

“Choose a pink or a red – stay away from the nudes, you want to make sure you look good.”

And what’s the best tip for Kim Kardashian should her water break while she’s out of the house?

Make sure to keep an extra pair of fake eyelashes at the ready.

“Or just do what I did and bring a whole box,” Snooki said.

There’s also the trouble with those drab hospital gowns.

Snooki advises that Kim Kardashian ought to bring her own, and shows off her stylish leopard print satin choice.

“It made me feel beautiful while I was in labor.”

Snooki added that she thinks Kim Kardashian “would be in more a couture/designer, maybe Dolce & Gabbana gown”.

As far as accessioning for that perfect first baby snap, Snooki advises to stay away from hoop earrings “because they can get caught in your extensions”, and instead opt for sparkling diamond studs.

With Kim Kardashian battling those extra pounds, Snooki advised to bring a scarf to avoid exposing those “million double chins”.

“Cover that s***t up,” she added.

For those like Kim Kardashian who have chosen not to ditch their beloved heels while with child, Snooki advises to say goodbye to those stilettos and instead opt for a pedicure.

“You always want your feet to be nice and pretty when you give birth. You don’t want any gross calluses because your feet are literally in the air for everyone to see.”

And for those emotional last moments in labor, Snooki dishes her best advice – waterproof make-up.

“You’re going to cry with the pain of pushing a baby out of your vagina – and also when you look at your baby for the first time.

“And trust me, you do not want to look like a zebra.”

Joan Rivers slams Ann Curry on HuffPost Live

The latest target to take a verbal battering from Joan Rivers is former TODAY host Ann Curry.

When asked about the ongoing Today show drama, Joan Rivers, 79, shocked HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill by laying into Ann Curry.

Ann Curry, 56, left Today show in 2012 amidst rumors that co-host Matt Lauer was behind the departure.

Joan Rivers didn’t hold back, she said: “Ann Curry? With all due respect…“ and then made a snoring sound.

She then aped her presenting style by saying: “Do you reeeeeallly like coffee? REALLY? That’s making me cry that you like coffee.”

Then Joan Rivers added the piece de resistance: “I used to scream at the set, <<Shut up, b***h!>>.“

Joan Rivers said more in support of Matt Lauer, who has seen TODAY ratings nosedive since Ann Curry left: “I think they’re blaming it all on him and it’s very unfair.”

But she did add: “She’s a very nice woman and I’ve heard Matt is a toughie.”

Joan Rivers said of the show “it’s being run by a lot of white men” who went to Ivy League schools and “didn’t keep up with the times”.

The Fashion Show host added: “You can’t sit on your laurels. Good Morning America is kicking butt.”

Ann Curry joined NBC News in 1990 as a Chicago correspondent and eventually rose through the ranks to become a news anchor at Today.

In 2011, she replaced Meredith Vieira on the morning show co-anchoring alongside Matt Lauer.

According to most accounts, Ann Curry and Matt Lauer did not see eye to eye almost from the get-go. While appearing collegiate and even friendly on air, the two colleagues were said to harbor intense feelings of dislike for one another.

Matt Lauer reportedly complained about Ann Curry and was believed to have played a key role in her ouster last year.

Giorgio Napolitano names 10 “wise men” to form new government in Italy

President Giorgio Napolitano has asked a select group of people to offer a policy platform to end the impasse in forming a new government in Italy.

Giorgio Napolitano named 10 “wise men” to work in two separate groups.

The president’s announcement ended speculation that he might resign – a day after political parties failed to agree a coalition government following February’s inconclusive election.

Giorgio Napolitano said he would serve out his mandate that ends on May 15.

Giorgio Napolitano named 10 “wise men” to work in two separate groups to end the impasse in forming a new government in Italy

Italy has been governed by a group of technocrats led by Mario Monti since late 2011 – when centre-right leader Silvio Berlusconi resigned in the middle of an acute economic crisis.

Giorgio Napolitano said that Mario Monti’s caretaker cabinet was still “operational” and “in charge”.

However, the continuing political stalemate is delaying reforms that could help revive Italy’s recession-hit, debt-laden economy.

Giorgio Napolitano finished consultations with Italy’s main political leaders on Friday.

In the absence of agreement, he said he asked “two small groups of personalities” to formulate “precise programme proposals” that could be supported by political parties – and serve as a basis for a new cabinet.

The first group will be asked to work on pressing political and institutional issues, while the second will focus on economic and social problems.

Among the 10 “wise men” are Enrico Giovannini, head of Italy’s Istat statistics agency, European Affairs Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi, Bank of Italy deputy director Salvatore Rossi and Valerio Onida, a former judge on the country’s constitutional court.

“I want to underline one more time the need for all political parties to demonstrate their full awareness of the gravity and urgency of the problems facing the country,” Giorgio Napolitano said.

Italy’s parliament is currently split in three main blocs – each without enough seats to govern alone.

Pier Luigi Bersani’s centre-left coalition won the most votes in the February election, but failed to secure a majority in both houses of parliament.

The bloc has ruled out an alliance with Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance, which finished a close second.

The protest group Five Stars Movement led by former comedian Beppe Grillo garnered a quarter of the vote, but has refused to support either group.

Italy’s 10 “Wise Men”:

  • Political and institutional reform group
  1. Prof. Valerio Onida – University of Milan constitutional law expert
  2. Luciano Volante – former parliament speaker from Pier Luigi Bersani’s party
  3. Mario Mauro – senator in Mario Monti’s party
  4. Gaetano Quagliariello – senator in Silvio Berlusconi’s party
  • Economic and social reform group
  1. Prof. Enrico Giovannini – statistics agency head
  2. Giovanni Pitruzzella – Competition Authority head
  3. Salvatore Rossi – Bank of Italy deputy head
  4. Enzo Moavero Milanesi – European Affairs minister

Turin Shroud on live TV for the first time

Italy’s Rai TV broadcast for the first time images of the Turin Shroud, which is revered by many Christians as the burial cloth of Jesus Christ.

The linen cloth bears a faint brownish image of what appears to be a man’s body.

A smartphone app was also created to show digital images of the Turin Shroud.

Pope Francis contributed a message to the broadcast, shortly before he was to celebrate his first Easter vigil.

The newly-elected Pope will preside over a vigil at St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday evening – ahead of the main Easter Sunday celebrations.

Thousands of people from all over the world are expected at Sunday’s Mass.

Viewers were able to watch live images of the 1.21 x 4.42 m Turin Shroud in a 90-minute programme on Rai TV from Turin Cathedral.

The images were also streamed on various websites.

In a video message ahead of the exhibition, Pope Francis said: “It speaks to our heart.”

The Pope described the cloth as an “icon” or an image but was careful not to authenticate as a genuine relic.

His predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict, also recorded a video message.

The shroud has never been officially recognized as authentic by the Vatican.

Rigorous scientific testing seems to indicate that the Turin Shroud was woven between 700 and 800 years ago.

But diehard believers say other tests prove that it could have been made at the time of the crucifixion – give or take a couple of hundred years.

The only previous – recorded – TV broadcast of the shroud was in 1973. It was last shown to the general public three years ago when Pope Benedict XVI travelled to Turin to view it.

The Shroud has been kept in the northern Italian city for more than four centuries.

It was taken there by members of the former Italian and French royal house of Savoy who originally acquired it in France in the belief that it had been brought to Europe by returning Crusaders.

Jamie Nash and Dallas Wiens: first US face transplant patient marries fellow burn victim

0

Dallas Wiens, of Fort Worth, Texas, who became the first person in the US to receive a full face transplant, got married on Saturday to fellow burn patient Jamie Nash that he met at a support group.

Dallas Wiens was severely injured in a bizarre construction accident in 2008 when he came into contact with a high-voltage power line.

Jamie Nash, of Garland, Texas, nearly died in a car crash in Ennis in 2010. Her car erupted in flames, and she was trapped. She was severely burned on her hands, back and legs.

Dallas Wiens and Jamie Nash, who got engaged last fall, exchanged vows Saturday morning at the Fort Worth church where Dallas was working when he was critically hurt.

Dallas Wiens, who became the first person in the US to receive a full face transplant, got married to fellow burn patient Jamie Nash

Pastor Scott Cox says about 200 people attended the wedding at Ridglea Baptist Church, including doctors and nurses who had treated the couple.

He says the couple told him they believe God brought them together.

Dallas Wiens, 27, was painting the church in 2008 when he touched a power line. He suffered facial injuries and was blinded. In 2011 he underwent a full facial transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Jamie Nash’s hands and back were burnt in a 2010 traffic accident.

The couple met in a support group at Parkland Hospital, where both were being treated.

Dallas Wiens’ features burned away and he was left blind after his head touched a high-voltage power line while painting the Ridglea Baptist Church in November 2008.

The man received a new nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves from an anonymous donor, and has had more than 38 surgeries.

However the transplant, which was paid for by the US military, was unable to restore his sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he has partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead.

Describing the first moment she locked eyes on him at the Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Jamie Nash said: ‘I just looked at him from across the room, and there was something about him’.

Dallas Wiens, who was previously married but filed for divorce before his accident in November 2008, said he wasn’t interested in getting into a relationship at first.

“I had sworn off love and relationships,” he said.

“I had no desire to be in one whatsoever.”

Then, on Christmas Eve, they talked all night and set up a date.

“We went to dinner and a movie, and that’s all she wrote,” Dallas Wiens said.

The couple said they have been together every day since.

“I told him it’s got to be love, because I’m not sick of you,” Jamie Nash joked.

“I know I’ve never felt more real than this.”

They plan to put their pasts behind them.

“There’s no reason to dwell on the past,” Dallas Wiens said.

“It’s dead and gone,” Jamie Nash added.

“It burned in the fire.”

Dallas Wiens and Jamie Nash said they make the perfect couple and help balance each other.

Her hands, for example, were severely injured in her accident. His are fine.

Famous Eiffel Tower in Paris has been evacuated on Saturday evening following an anonymous phone-call threatening an attack.

An estimated 1,400 people were visiting the site when France’s anti-terrorism police made the decision to clear it.

A security perimeter was set up around the world-famous monument and police said a search could take several hours, French media reported.

The Eiffel Tower has been threatened several times in recent years. In 2011, 4,000 people were cleared from it.

L’Express news website said that tourists and staff were told to come down from the tower at around 19:00 local time on Saturday.

Security guards were also ordered to leave, a decision described as unusual.

Police then searched the area with sniffer dogs for possible explosives.

Security has recently been stepped up across the country amid concerns about threats to France over its military campaign in Mali.

Macaulay Culkin enjoys Foire du Trone in Paris

The child star – who skyrocketed to fame in the 1990 holiday flick Home Alone – put his struggles behind him, allowing himself just to enjoy the fun event.

Despite a reported severe drug problem Macaulay Culkin seems to be in recovery, looking fuller figured and he even had some color in his cheeks.

Keeping a pair of red sunglasses on, Macaulay Culkin wore his now longer blonde hair tied back into a bun and donned blue suit trousers with a paisley shirt, leather jacket and shoes that appeared like he had stolen them from one of the carnivals’ clowns.

Taking a tour around the event Macaulay Culkin stopped at one of the traditional rides and raced his friends down a large slide.

North Korea threatens to shut down Kaesong Industrial Complex

North Korea has threatened to shut down Kaesong Industrial Complex it jointly operates with South Korea that stands as the last significant symbol of cooperation, after reiterating that it considered the Korean Peninsula back in “a state of war”.

The eight-year-old Kaesong complex in the North Korean border town of the same name, is a crucial source of badly needed cash for the heavily sanctioned North.

The industrial park funnels more than $92 million a year in wages for 53,400 North Koreans employed there, and its operation has survived despite years of military tensions. The latest threat to close down Kaesong came amid a torrent of bellicose statements by North Korea in recent days, widely seen as a strategy to increase pressure on South Korea and the US to soften their policies on the North.

Although South Korean officials reasserted that they were ready to retaliate if North Korea committed any military provocations, they said they saw no imminent sign of any such attacks.

On Saturday, cross-border traffic operated as normal, allowing hundreds of South Koreans to travel to and from Kaesong.

Over 300 South Koreans remained in the complex, where 123 South Korean textile and other labor-intensive factories employ the North Korean workers, at an average monthly wage of $144.

The fate of Kaesong is seen as a crucial test of how far North Korea is willing to take its recent threats against the South. Its continued operation was often seen as a sign that Pyongyang’s verbal militancy was not necessarily matched by its actions.

“The South Korean puppet forces are left with no face to make complaint even though we ban the South side’s personnel’s entry into the zone and close it,” North Korea said Saturday in a statement carried by its official KCNA.

North Korea said its dignity was insulted by South Korean news media reports that suggested the North kept the complex open to obtain hard currency.

In another development, some of North Korea’s main government-run Web sites were disabled on Saturday in what news media reports said were cyber attacks.

The disabled sites included those of Naenara, the government’s official Web portal; Air Koryo, the state-run airline; and Voice of Korea, Pyongyang’s international broadcast outlet.

North Korea Tech, a Web site that monitors Internet activities on the Korean Peninsula, said the problems appeared “to be part of a loosely coordinated effort by hackers to target North Korean sites.” By late Saturday afternoon, North Korean officials had not confirmed any attacks on government-run Web sites.

The problems come as some analysts suspect that cyber attacks have become an increasingly frequent weapon in the intensified sparring between the Koreas, although each side denies hacking the other.

South Korean officials suspect that North Korea was behind cyber attacks on March 20 against three banks and the country’s two largest broadcasters. The attacks came five days after North Korea blamed South Korea and the US for cyber attacks that temporarily shut down some of its official Web sites, and warned of “consequences”.

North Korea has been angry ever since South Korea and the US started a joint military exercise in early March. Its bellicosity further escalated when the UN imposed more sanctions against it after its February 12 nuclear test.

North Korea has since declared an “all-out action” against Washington and Seoul and said that the armistice that stopped the Korean War in 1953, as well as all nonaggression agreements with South Korea were nullified.

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, ordered all his missile units to be on standby and if provoked, attack the US and South Korea with nuclear-tipped long-range missiles, although most analysts doubt the North has them.

A statement by South Korea’s military said that although the North Korean threats were not new, they “are unacceptable and harm the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.”

Bassem Youssef faces arrest warrant for insulting Islam and Mohamed Morsi

An arrest warrant has been issued in Egypt for popular political satirist Bassem Youssef for allegedly insulting Islam and President Mohamed Morsi.

Bassem Youssef has faced several complaints over his show Al Bernameg (The Programme).

The satirist has poked fun at a wide range of figures, from fellow television presenters to well-known Muslim scholars and recently Mohamed Morsi himself.

The case has highlighted worries about press freedoms in Egypt.

The move is also seen as the latest in a string of prosecution actions against opponents of the president and his party, the Muslim Brotherhood.

Earlier this week, Egypt’s top prosecutor ordered the arrest of five political activists, among them a leading blogger, on suspicion of inciting aggression against the Brotherhood.

The prosecutor, Talat Ibrahim, was appointed late last year by the president, after he had sacked his predecessor, Abdel Maguid Mahmoud.

However, a court this week ordered Maguid Mahmoud’s reinstatement, a decision that Talat Ibrahim said on Saturday he would fight.

Many journalists have criticized the Islamist-backed constitution which came into force earlier this year, arguing it does not offer enough guarantees for a free media.

The constitution also sparked protests from opponents who say it favors Islamists and does not sufficiently protect the rights of women or Christians.

Bassem Youssef is a doctor who shot to fame after winning a large number of followers with his witty lampooning of public figures in amateur videos posted on the internet following the uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak’s rule in February 2011.

He became a household name when his satirical show – likened to Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show in the US – began to be broadcast three times a week on one of Egypt’s independent satellite stations.

But sketches in which Bassem Youssef portrayed Mohamed Morsi as a pharaoh, calling him “Super Morsi” for holding on to executive and legislative powers, and, separately, putting the president’s image on a pillow and parodying his speeches angered one Islamist lawyer, whose formal complaint resulted in the investigation.

As well as insulting President Mohamed Morsi and Islam, Bassem Youssef is also accused of “spreading false news with the aim of disrupting public order”.

In a statement posted on Bassem Youssef’s Twitter account on Saturday he confirmed the warrant, adding: “I will go to the public prosecutor’s office on Sunday – unless they send me a police car and save me [the bother of] getting there on public transport.”

Jessica Simpson piled on 70lbs while she was pregnant with daughter Maxwell Drew but now she is determined to keep her baby weight under control as she hit the gym in Los Angeles, California, on Friday.

Jessica Simpson, 32, who has 11-month-old daughter Maxwell Drew with NFL player fiancé Eric Johnson, gained 70lbs during her first pregnancy, and admitted that this time around she is trying to keep her cravings under control as she knows how difficult it was to shift her baby weight.

Speaking to chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, Jessica Simpson recently said: “The first pregnancy I like let loose and I kind of ate everything that I wanted to eat and I just really enjoyed it.

“This time around I think because I was doing Weight Watchers and I felt super healthy. I’m not really craving as much and I know how hard it is to get off so I’m trying to make healthier, wiser decisions.”

However, Eric Johnson was positively enamored by her blossoming figure.

Jessica Simpson said: “Apparently Eric still wanted me. So I can gain as much weight and I will have a husband to be that loves me.”

She explained her whole pregnancy has been different the second time around, with her finding the experience “exhausting”.

Jessica Simpson said: “It’s the complete opposite. Like with Maxwell, I felt amazing. Like I could do everything, eat everything. Do whatever I wanted.

“I had a lot of energy. This time around, I’m like exhausted. Eating Tums. That’s my snack of choice.”

Bank of Cyprus haircuts big depositors up to 60%

Bank of Cyprus depositors with more than 100,000 euros ($128,200) could lose up to 60% of their savings as part of the EU-IMF bailout restructuring move, officials say.

The central bank of Cyprus said 37.5% of holdings over 100,000 euros would become shares.

Up to 22.5% will go into a fund attracting no interest and may be subject to further write-offs.

The other 40% will attract interestbut this will not be paid unless the bank performs well.

Cypriot officials have also said that big depositors at Laiki – the country’s second largest bank – could face an even tougher “haircut”. However, no details have been released.

The officials say that Laiki will eventually be absorbed into the Bank of Cyprus.

Cyprus needs to raise 5.8 billion euros to qualify for the bailout, and has become the first eurozone member country to bring in capital controls to prevent a torrent of money leaving the island and credit institutions collapsing.

On Thursday, banks in Cyprus opened for the first time in nearly two weeks. Queues formed of people trying to access their money, but the mood was generally calm.

By Friday, banks had returned to their normal working hours and there were no longer reports of big queues.

Liu Hui, brother-in-law of jailed Chinese Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo, is being held on fraud charges, his lawyer says.

Liu Hui was detained in January over a property dispute, his lawyer Mo Shaoping said, adding that the evidence against him was “insufficient”.

Liu Xiaobo was sentenced in 2009 for helping to draft a manifesto – Charter 08 – calling for political change.

His wife, Liu Xia, has been under house arrest ever since he was awarded the Nobel prize two-and-half years ago.

Confined to her Beijing apartment with no internet or phone access, and limited to weekly visits to family members, Liu Xia has described her house arrest as a painful experience.

Liu Xiaobo is currently serving 11 years in jail for inciting the subversion of state power. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 despite the Chinese government’s fierce opposition.

“[Liu Hui] should face trial soon, within a month,” Mo Shaoping told the AFP news agency.

The lawyer could not confirm whether the charges were connected with the activities of his brother-in-law, but said he had been under constant “surveillance by public security units” in recent months, AFP reports.

Some 134 Nobel laureates and Chinese activists wrote to Xi Jinping, the new head of the Communist Party, in December asking for Liu Xiaobo’s release.

Jesse Ryder out of coma after three days

Cricketer Jesse Ryder has come out of a medically-induced coma, three days after he was attacked outside a bar in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Jesse Ryder, 28, suffered serious injuries after being attacked twice in quick succession as he left the bar.

The cricketer was still in intensive care but he was no longer on a ventilator and had been talking, his manager Aaron Klee said.

Two people have been charged with assault and are due in court next week.

Jesse Ryder had been in Christchurch with team-mates after playing for Wellington Firebirds in a domestic one-day competition. He had been due to fly to Delhi to begin a $300,000 contract in the Indian Premier League.

His manager told a news conference that “Jesse Ryder is awake and talking to us” but added that while they were “absolutely thrilled with the progress”, he had suffered very bad concussion and damage to his lungs.

“We’re all pretty exhausted, it’s been a pretty difficult few days, but having some wins over the last 24 hours has been a huge relief.”

Jesse Ryder stopped playing international cricket for New Zealand in February last year after a series of alcohol-related problems. He had also had disciplinary lapses.

Police said while Jesse Ryder had been drinking before the assault on Thursday morning, alcohol was not a factor.

The suspects charged with assaulting Jesse Ryder, aged 20 and 37, are due to appear before Christchurch District Court on April 4.
