Krystle Campbell identified as second victim killed in Boston Marathon terror attacks

Krystle Campbell has been identified as the second victim killed in the Boston Marathon terror attacks on Monday.

Krystle Campbell was a 29-year-old steakhouse manager who went to the race every year.

Doctors initially told her father, William Campbell Jr., that Krystle had survived the bombing and was undergoing surgery but had mistaken her for her friend.

William Campbell spent 12 hours believing his daughter had survived and only learned the truth after going into the post-operating room and saw his daughter’s friend instead.

“We had the doctors come out and tell us everything they did [on the survivor] – and it wasn’t our daughter,” William Campbell said.

Krystle Campbell went with her pal, Karen Rand, to cheer on Karen’s boyfriend.

They were struck by the first blast as they waited near the finish line.

William Campbell rushed to the hospital and felt relieved when doctors said they were operating on their daughter’s leg at Massachusetts General Hospital.

But when nurses brought them into a post-operating room around 2 a.m. he saw Karen Rand instead.

“I said, <<That’s not my daughter, that’s Karen! Where’s my daughter?>>. The doctors were as shocked as we were,” William Campbell said.

A Boston detective later showed them a photo of Krystle Campbell, who worked as a manager at Jimmy’s Steakhouse.

“I almost passed out on the floor,” William Campbell said as he was about to view his daughter’s body.

“She was the best person you’d ever meet. She helped everybody,” he said.

“I don’t care who you were, she was always there.”

Krystle Campbell was one of the three victims killed in the two blasts that came just seconds apart. The first victim identified was 8-year-old Martin Richard.

There were 176 people injured in the attack, and 17 people remain in critical condition. As many as 10 people suffered a lost limb, including two children.

“My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody, and I’m just so shocked right now. We’re just devastated,” William Campbell said.

“She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand.”

Krystle Campbell went to watch the Boston Marathon every year, according to Boston.com.

She attended the University of Massachusetts-Boston and was a graduate of Medford High School.

Her grandmother, Lillian Campbell of Somerville, Massachusetts, said Krystle had just moved to the town a short time ago.

Krystle Campbell was living with her grandmother to care for her during an illness for the past couple of years.

Lillian Campbell said that her granddaughter “was just beautiful”.

“She was fun, outgoing person. She was always there to help somebody. All her friends loved her.

“The family is besides themselves now because something happened to her,” the grandmother said.

Before working at the steakhouse, Krystle Campbell was a manager at the Summer Shack.

“The Summer Shack family is devastated by the loss of our beloved Krystle Campbell. Please keep her & her family in your thoughts & prayers,” the popular restaurant tweeted this afternoon.

William Campbell had harsh words for whoever carried out the attack.

“I’m very angry. I hope they catch the bastard and fry him,” he said of whoever perpetrated the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

“I can’t understand it – someone doing that. People are out there enjoying a beautiful day and then to have this happen.

“And then the little boy that passed,” he told The New York Daily News, referring to 8-year-old Martin Richard.

“It’s totally tragic.”

The mayor of Medford, Massachusetts., Krystle Campbell’s hometown, said he had attempted to console William Campbell.

“Mr. Campbell said that she certainly was a dream daughter, the daughter that every father dreams to have and friends of hers said that she was eager about life,” Mayor Michael McGlynn said, according to Reuters.

“She had a great sense of humor and freckles and red hair that brought her right to her Irish roots. She was someone who worked hard at everything she did,” Michael McGlynn said.

“Another friend said she may have been a little loud at times but it was a loudness you loved.”

A former colleague of Krystle Campbell’s, Steve Sullivan of Pembroke, MA, told BuzzFeed that Krystle was “a beautiful person” and “an angel”.

“Whenever I saw her she always had a smile on her face.”

Anna Friel beauty secrets: Master Cleanse regime, Cryoderm and vampire facelift

Anna Friel has revealed she relies on the “Master Cleanse” regime, which sees food replaced with a mixture of cayenne pepper, maple syrup and lemon juice, to stay slender.

Anna Friel, 36, told Grazia magazine: It’s amazing. I’ve been drinking it for two months and I feel so much better and my skin has really benefitted.

“If you’re vain, as you get older you start thinking, <<I’ve got to do everything I can to save my skin>>. I’ve tried everything!”

Other celebrity fans of the Master Cleanse include Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyoncé, who lost 20 lbs in just two weeks ahead of filming her movie Dreamgirls by sticking to the plan.

Beyoncé said of the diet: “I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying.”

Restricting her food allowance isn’t the only way Anna Friel maintains her youthful allowance, as she told the publication she is also a fan of the celebrity favorite “vampire facelift”.

She said: “Vampire facials involve taking two vials of blood from your arm and re-injecting it back into your skin.

“It’s meant to help your skin heal itself and boosts collagen. It makes my skin really glowy and tight again.”

In addition, Anna Friel has regular Cryoderm treatments prior to red carpet appearances – a treatment which involves the skin being warmed up with a machine to stimulate collagen production and therefore reduce the signs of wrinkles – as well as giving herself a DIY version of the method at home.

The actress explained: “I always have a Cryoderm treatment before a red carpet. People say I look really good afterwards.

“I also do the old-fashioned method at home, where I fill my sink with ice cubes and hold them on my face for a minute.”

Ageing is clearly a huge concern for Anna Friel, who said that she will try absolutely anything in a bid to stay looking young.

Anna Friel added: “I felt sick recently because I found one or two grey hair and I read that curry leave help maintain your hair color, so I mix them with hot water and drink it as a tea.

“I’m always searching for pure, natural skin products and Trilogy is great for that too. Their Everything Balm is fantastic.”

Boston Marathon: Saudi student described as quiet, devout Muslim and a huge soccer fan

1

The Saudi student, who was detained for “acting suspiciously” at the Boston Marathon finish line, has been described by his neighbors as a “quiet, devout Muslim who is a huge soccer fan”.

Detectives and bomb disposal officers raided the 20-year-old’s apartment last night in the Revere area of Boston and could be seen removing several bags of evidence, though he has not been charged with anything.

The Saudi student, who is studying English, is in hospital after suffering from serious burns and is said to be cooperating fully with police. He was tackled to the ground by a civilian who believed he was acting suspiciously. Several neighbors believed he had Anglicized his Saudi name to Jason.

The bombs had been placed in six-liter pressure cookers packed with ball bearings and nails and placed in black duffel bags, it was revealed today.

The Saudi student – who has not been named – said he had been at dinner with friends the night before and was at the marathon simply because he “wanted to see the end of the race”.

One of his two flat mates, Mohammed Bada, described him as a devout Muslim and a soccer fan who is from the city of Medina in Saudi Arabia.

He is attending an English language school in greater Boston, the roommate said, adding that he last saw him on Sunday.

It is not clear if agents found anything in the raid, but Revere fire officials said they were called out to support bomb-squad officers as part of the investigation of the “person of interest”.

Other residents in the smart 13-storey complex said three young men lived in a fifth floor apartment.

“There are a lot of rumors floating about. This is a building that has been packed with people from the Middle East in recent years – it is a very popular area with Saudi students,” said Gita Lopez, who lives in one of the adjoining six blocks in the complex that is known as Water’s Edge.

Staff at the building’s leasing office refused to comment on the suspect or his friends. But one said: “We are co-operating fully with the police.”

However, other neighbors pointed to Boston’s role in the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks.

Brothers Hamza and Ahmed Ghamdi spent their last four nights hiding out at hotels in nearby Cambridge before hijacking Flight 175 moments after take off from Boston’s Logan Airport.

At Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, investigators seized the Saudi student’s clothes to examine whether they held any evidence that he was behind the attack, which is being called the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

On Tuesday, police sources told the Associated Press the bombs were made from pressure cookers filled with metal.

When they exploded around 2.50 p.m., they left victims covered in as many as 40 wounds each and attacked their lower extremities, leaving many needing amputations.

Law sources told the New York Post that after the man was grabbed by police, he smelled of gun powder and said: “I thought there would be a second bomb.” Then he asked: “Did anyone die?”

The Saudi man was tackled by a bystander by the scene who thought he was acting suspiciously.

Investigators were seen leaving the scene with brown paper evidence bags, trash bags and a duffel bag.

A law enforcement source told CBS: “They see him running away from the device. Now, a reasonable person would be running away. But this person had noticed him before. This is a civilian – chases him down, tackles him, turns him over to the Boston police.

“The individual is being looked at [and] was suffering from burn injury. That means this person was pretty close to wherever this blast went off, but not so close as to suffer the serious injuries that other people did.”

Five minutes before the first explosion, officials said the hooded man attempted to gain entry to a restricted area but was turned away. Authorities say he may be a foreign national, based on his accent.

Other reports suggested one line of inquiry was an individual caught on camera before the attack carrying multiple backpacks into the area 20 minutes before the deadly blasts.

Separately, pictures of a man in handcuffs surrounded by law enforcement officials circulated Twitter on Monday evening. But authorities didn’t identify the man or say whether his arrest was related to the blasts or if it was the “Saudi national”.

“At this time, we haven’t been notified of any arrests or anyone apprehended,” a police spokesperson said.

He said the presence of law enforcement spotters on the roof at the start of the race also made the seasoned marathoner suspect police must have had some threat or suspicion called in.

But government officials deny this and say there were no warnings of any kind.

As police scurried to find leads that would lead them to the culprits, speculation grew that it looked more like a right-wing terrorist attack rather than al Qaeda-inspired extremism.

The two blasts on Monday went off almost concurrently near the Boston Marathon finish line.

Police initially said a third blast occurred at the JFK Presidential Library but later reported it as an unrelated fire.

Cell phone service was shut down across the area to prevent any potential remote detonations as police feared there were secondary devices.

Police were in a desperate race against time to find any additional devices and said the task had been complicated by the items discarded by spectators fleeing the scene.

Multiple reports were flooding in in the moments after the attack, saying there were devices reported outside Harvard and other sites along the marathon route. But today it was confirmed that there were only two devices.

Massachusetts General Hospital, where 22 victims of the bomb blast are being treated, was forced into lock-down for about two hours after a suspicious package was reported in the parking garage across the street.

Bomb sniffing dogs from the Rhode Island State Police, SWAT officers from the Boston police department and bomb squad officers searched the entire parking structure, floor-by-floor.

Authorities found one bag, but determined it was not a threat and contained nothing suspicious.

As the investigation continued into Monday night, all off-duty officers in the city were called back on duty and dog units were sent in to help the emergency response.

The scene of the blasts will remain cordoned off for at least 24 hours as forensic work continues.

Police were pleading with onlookers to head home over fears the dangers remained in the downtown area of the city.

NBC reported that the devices which caused the blasts were “small homemade bombs” as the FBI referred it as a “terrorist attack”.

Police departments across the country including San Francisco and New York have been put on heightened alert.

Today, a plane was brought back to the gate at Logan airport after two passengers on board were speaking Arabic and people grew concerned.

Google Glass: No ads allowed within device’s display

Developers working on apps for Google Glass have been informed they will not be allowed to place ads within the device’s display.

The newly-published terms and conditions for developers working on Google Glass also prohibit companies charging for apps.

The smart glasses, which have a five megapixel camera and voice-activated controls, have started to be shipped.

The first devices will go to developers and “Glass Explorers”.

Google held a competition earlier this year inviting potential users to come up with ways to use the device, while developers have been eager to be among the first to try out the technology.

As part of the announcement, Google also gave the first official details of the device’s specifications.

The bone conduction transducer allows the wearer to hear audio without the need for in-ear headphones – sound waves are instead delivered through the user’s cheekbones and into the inner ear.

Google promises a battery lasting for “one full day of typical use”.

Google Glass display is the equivalent, the company says, of looking at a 25 in (63 cm) high-definition screen from eight feet away. The device is able to record video at a resolution of 720p.

It has 16GB on-board storage, and connects with other mobile devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

To date, it is privacy groups that have offered the strongest dissenting view against Google’s plans with Glass.

One campaigner from a group called Stop The Cyborgs, wrote “We want people to actively set social and physical bounds around the use of technologies and not just fatalistically accept the direction technology is heading in.”

He predicted that the focus of coverage about the device would shift from talking about the “amazing new gadget that will improve the world” to “the most controversial device in history”.

For developers, that controversy could begin with wondering how exactly they will be able to make money from the device.

Also keeping an eye on the excitement generated by Google will be Japanese firm Telepathy Inc.

Their device, the Telepathy One, has been touted as a possible competitor to Google Glass.

Chinese search giant Baidu has also confirmed it is working on a Glass-like project – but details are so far scant.

London Marathon 2013: Ten little known facts about world famous endurance race

0

London Marathon 2013, one of the biggest participation sport events in the UK, takes place on Sunday, April 21.

The race will feature in excess of 36,000 runners as they make the 26-mile, 385 yard journey from Blackheath to The Mall.

The London Marathon facts:

  1. The name “marathon” comes from the name of a Greek battlefield, from which messenger Pheidippides ran the 24.8 miles to Athens to announce the Greeks’ victory over the Persians. After delivering his message, he collapsed and died from exhaustion.
  2. The 2011 winner, Kenya’s Emmanuel Mutai, completed the London Marathon in a new course record of 2:02.40.
  3. Lloyd Scott competed in London Marathon 2002 wearing a 110 lb deep-sea diving suit. It took him five days and eight hours to complete the course, breaking the world record for the slowest marathon time. It’s a record that will remain unbroken, as London Marathon officials have set a maximum time limit of 24 hours. Lloyd Scott has also completed the course dressed as a snail, St George and Indiana Jones.

Boston Marathon: Saudi suspect denies any involvement in bomb blasts

0

According to officials, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for Boston Marathon explosions, but a Saudi suspect was arrested at the scene.

Meanwhile an official told CNN that there was no surveillance footage of the bombs being planted.

However, on Monday night, 20 police and federal officials, including members of the bomb squad raided a Boston area apartment.

A source confirmed that a large police presence at a home in Revere was related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

Boston Police Crime Scene Response unit arrived and two members of that unit took several brown paper bags, normally used to store evidence taken from the scene, into the building and left with them full afterwards.

On Monday, the FBI announced they were searching for a man they described as having dark skin, wearing black clothes and a black back-pack who tried to gain entry into a restricted area during the marathon.

It was also reported that he may have had a foreign accent.

The raid came after a Saudi national, who is being treated for burns and shrapnel wounds at hospital, was arrested at the scene.

He had been tackled by a civilian who believed he was acting suspiciously, and he was being interviewed by the FBI.

The Saudi suspect was being cooperative and denying any involvement.

Initially counter-terrorism sources in Boston believed that seven devices were planted across the city – but only two detonated.

A law-enforcement official said late on Monday evening that investigators believe other packages were simply left behind as runners and pedestrians rushed away from the scene in the aftermath of the blasts.

A federal law enforcement official told CNN that both bombs which detonated at the Boston Marathon finish line were small, and initial tests showed no C-4 or other high-grade explosive was used – indicating they were crude devices.

Boston police initially issued an alert for a rental van that may have sought access to the marathon route, and then another alert for a man wearing dark clothing and a hood who was seen leaving the scene of the blasts.

The two bombs raised the specter that terrorism has struck again in the U.S.

After the twin detonations ripped through the cheering crowds, witnesses described the horror.

The fiery twin blasts took place about 12 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the route.

Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories.

The explosions ripped into an idyllic afternoon finish for the marathon. The first men had passed the finish line 2 hours and 10 minutes after the staggered start, and the first women crossed just 16 minutes later.

The first blast sent a quick plume of smoke two stories high. Runners nearby stopped in their tracks, confused and unsure. After a few seconds later, a second explosion happened a half-block away, with a deep boom caught on television cameras.

Martin Richard, 8 years old from Dorchester, MA, killed by first bomb at Boston Marathon

0

Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy from Dorchester, Massachusetts, waiting at the finish line to give his father a hug, was among three people killed and more than 152 injured when two explosions rocked the Boston Marathon in the worst terrorist atrocity since 9/11.

Martin Richard died after the first of two bombs hidden in trash cans were detonated within 12 seconds of each other during the Patriots’ Day bank holiday yesterday.

Seventeen of the injured are in a critical condition and CNN reported that at least 10 victims have needed amputations. At least 8 of the wounded are thought to be children, including a 2-year-old boy who suffered a head injury.

Another was 11-year-old Aaron Hern, of Martinez, California, who was hit by flying shrapnel in his thigh as he waited for his mother to cross the finish line. He is being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital and is expected to undergo further surgeries.

Investigators do not know of a motive for the bombers, nor do they have a specific suspect. But last night detectives raided a Boston home after a man, said to be of Saudi origin, was arrested at the scene for acting suspiciously and taken to hospital, where he was treated for burns and shrapnel wounds.

The Boston Globe has reported that Martin Richard may very nearly have cheated death after walking out to embrace his father Bill Richard as he went to cross the finishing line.

But when Bill Richard walked on, Martin turned back to rejoin his mother and two of his siblings just as the first bomb exploded.

Martin Richard’s 6-year-old sister, Jane, lost a leg in the blast and his mother, Denise, is in hospital after undergoing brain surgery. His older brother, Henry, 12, believed to be in the 5th grade, escaped injury.

According to 7News, a candle was lit outside the family home and the word “Peace” written on the pavement.

Bill Richard is understood to be a popular community leader in the Boston suburb.

Martin Richard was a keen baseball player, climber and runner and was a member of Savin Hill Little League team.

On Twitter, Maeve O Brien called him “the sweetest little boy I’ve ever met”.

As the FBI took over the investigation, authorities shared no information about a motive or who may have carried out Boston Marathon bombings, and police said they did not have any suspects in custody.

London Marathon 2013 security tighten following Boston Marathon explosions

London Marathon organizers have decided to review the Sunday’s race security after two fatal explosions hit the Boston Marathon yesterday, but the event will go ahead, officials say.

At least three people were killed and more than 140 injured by the blasts near the finish of the Boston Marathon.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said he was “absolutely confident” the London Marathon could be kept safe.

London had “enormous experience” of delivering major events and the UK had some of the best security professionals in the world, he said.

Hugh Robertson added: “This is one of those instances where the best way to show solidarity with Boston is to continue.”

Home Secretary Theresa May has been briefed on the bombings by Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick and MI5 chief Sir Jonathan Evans.

At this stage, there are no plans for a meeting of the UK government’s emergency committee Cobra, but high-level discussions were already planned and will go ahead because of Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on Wednesday, April 17.

The Metropolitan Police said security for the funeral in central London would not be affected by the Boston Marathon explosions and that it was a very different event.

London Marathon chief executive Nick Bitel said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the news from Boston.”

He later said he “fully expected” the London Marathon, which first took place in 1981 and was completed by more than 37,000 people last year, to go ahead.

Nick Bitel said security plans “take account of many contingencies, including this type of threat and incident, but one can’t be complacent and when it has happened, you need to then review those plans you have in place to see what else may be necessary.”

St James’s Palace said Prince Harry would still attend the marathon to make the presentations to the winners.

The London Marathon route, which is lined by hundreds of thousands of spectators every year, starts in Blackheath and finishes near Buckingham Palace, passing some of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and Big Ben.

London Mayor Boris Johnson described Boston Marathon bombings as “shocking, cowardly and horrific”.

He has spoken to Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe about the possibility of extra security for the London Marathon.

“We do have robust security measures in place, but given events in Boston it’s only prudent for the police and the organizers of Sunday’s race to re-examine those security arrangements,” he said.

British police say they have also launched a review of security for the Greater Manchester Marathon, due to take place on Sunday, April 28.

Iran 7.8-magnitude earthquake kills at least 40 people near Pakistan border

South-east Iran has been hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, with tremors felt across Pakistan, India and the Middle East.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the earthquake was 53 miles from the city of Khash, near the border with Pakistan.

Pervez Musharraf barred from Pakistan polls

Former military leader Pervez Musharraf has been barred from standing in Pakistan general elections in May.

An election tribunal disqualified Pervez Musharraf from running in Chitral in the north-west. Earlier, he failed in an attempt to stand in three other seats.

Pervez Musharraf’s lawyer says he plans to file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, at least four people were killed in an attack on a convoy of the main opposition PML-N party in the south-western province of Balochistan.

Pervez Musharraf returned from self-imposed exile in Dubai last month saying he wanted to save Pakistan.

The former military ruler is already embroiled in a series of legal battles attempting to stave off arrest, and a bid to try him for treason.

In addition to his legal and political problems, Pervez Musharraf is facing a security threat from the Pakistani Taliban, who have vowed to target him with a squad of suicide bombers.

There was no immediate claim for the attack in Balochistan. Correspondents say the area has no Taliban presence and is known to be a hotbed of separatist rebel activity.

South Korea unveils $15.3 billion stimulus plan

South Korea is the latest Asian country to try and boost economic growth by spending hard, unveiling a 17.3 trillion won ($15.3 billion) stimulus plan.

The funds will be used to help small and medium-sized exporters, create jobs, boost a stagnant property market and cover a shortfall in tax revenue.

Recently, South Korea has been hurt by weak exports and subdued domestic demand.

The move is expected to help boost annual growth by 0.3 percentage point this year and create 40,000 jobs.

“This is a much-needed move,” said Kwon Young-sun, an economist with Nomura.

“It may not boost growth substantially but will help sustain the economy in the medium term amid the various pressures and challenges that it is facing.”

South Korea is the latest Asian country to try and boost economic growth by spending hard, unveiling a 17.3 trillion won stimulus plan

The move comes just weeks after the finance ministry cut the country’s growth forecast for the current year.

It said it expects the economy to grow by 2.3% in 2013, down from its earlier projection of 3%.

The biggest drag on growth has been a slowdown in exports, which account for almost half of South Korea’s total economic output. Shipments have been hit by weak demand in markets such as the US and the eurozone.

At the same time, recent fluctuations in currency markets have triggered concerns over a further slowdown in the sector.

The South Korean won has risen by nearly 10% against the US dollar since May, making its exports more expensive to foreign buyers.

A strong currency also hurts the profits of exporters when they repatriate their foreign earnings back home.

The main trigger for the gain in the won has been Japan’s decision to massively boost its stimulus and spending plans. At the centre of its new policy has been achieving a weaker yen in the hope of boosting exports.

Japan’s yen has dipped nearly 20% against the US dollar since November last year.

There are fears that because Japan and South Korea compete in similar markets, Korean goods may lose out as a result of the currency moves.

Martin Richard, an 8-year-old boy waiting at the Boston Marathon finish line to give his father a hug, was among three people killed and more than 144 injured in the two explosions.

Martin Richard was standing with his mother and sister, who both suffered horrific injuries when bombs hidden in rubbish bins exploded within seconds of each other during the Patriots’ Day bank holiday.

Boston police closed off the city as a “danger zone” as witnesses described the “unspeakable horror” of body parts flying through the air and shoes that “still had flesh in them”.

At least 17 of the injured people are in a critical condition and it is thought as many as 30 victims may have needed amputations or major corrective surgery on maimed limbs.

Today, the US remained on full alert after the worst terrorist outrage since the World Trade Centre towers were destroyed by hijacked jets on September 11, 2001.

President Barack Obama vowed to hunt down the culprits and “hold them accountable”.

In the UK, Scotland Yard confirmed security arrangements were being reviewed ahead of Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on April 17 and London Marathon on April 21.

Video footage showed an explosion going off in the heart of the crowd that had lined the streets of the Massachusetts city yesterday to watch the famous sporting event.

After the blasts, two more suspicious devices were found in the city’s Mandarin Oriental and Lenox hotels. Both were evacuated and the suspected bombs dismantled.

According to the Boston Globe, Martin Richard, from Dorchester, Massachusetts, may very nearly have cheated death after walking out to embrace his father Bill Richard as he went to cross the finishing line.

When his walked on, Martin Richard turned back to rejoin his mother and two of his siblings just as the first bomb exploded. Reports suggest his mother was seriously injured and his sister’s leg was blown off.

Margaret Thatcher’s body to be moved to Palace of Westminster chapel

The body of former British PM Margaret Thatcher is to be moved to a chapel in the Palace of Westminster later, ahead of Wednesday’s funeral.

A service, led by the Dean of Westminster, will be held in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft.

MPs are also expected to vote later on whether to cancel Prime Minister’s Questions in order to allow them to attend the funeral.

Two MPs are trying to block the plan to delay the start of Commons’ business.

Respect MP George Galloway and Labour’s Dennis Skinner have both objected to the cancellation of PMQs, meaning MPs will now have to debate and vote on the plan before the change can be made.

If agreed, parliamentary business would not begin until 14:30 BST on Wednesday.

George Galloway says there has been “unnecessary fawning” over Margaret Thatcher, who was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

However, the motion is expected to be passed after Labour said its MPs would not oppose it.

Margaret Thatcher, who died at the age of 87 on April 8 at the Ritz Hotel in London, has been accorded a ceremonial funeral with military honors, one step down from a state funeral.

The ceremonial funeral will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

Before the funeral, Margaret Thatcher’s body will rest overnight in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster.

A short service, for around 100 people, will be led by the Dean of Westminster and attended by members of the family, senior figures from both Houses of Parliament and staff from Parliament and Downing Street who knew or worked closely with Lady Thatcher.

After the service, the chapel will be open for several hours in order that members of both Houses and parliamentary staff may pay their respects.

The Speaker’s chaplain, the Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, will then keep vigil in the chapel through the night.

On Wednesday, Margaret Thatcher’s coffin will initially travel by hearse from the Palace of Westminster to the Church of St Clement Danes – the Central Church of the RAF – on the Strand.

It will then be transferred to a gun carriage and taken in procession to St Paul’s Cathedral.

St Paul’s Cathedral has published a full funeral order of service for Margaret Thatcher.

Boston Marathon explosion: FBI launches terrorism inquiry after blasts leave 3 people dead and 140 injured

The FBI launches a “potential terrorism inquiry” after two explosions hit Boston Marathon finishing line leaving three people dead and at least 140 injured.

Boston police say officers are working around the clock and all leave has been cancelled.

At least 17 people are critically wounded, officials say, and the injuries include several amputations.

One of the dead was an eight-year-old boy, US media said.

In a televised address, President Barack Obama vowed to bring those behind the attack to justice.

“We will find out who did this. We’ll find out why they did this,” the president said.

“Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice.”

Although President Barack Obama did not use the word “terrorism”, a White House official later said: “Any event with multiple explosive devices – as this appears to be – is clearly an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror.”

The FBI launches a “potential terrorism inquiry” after two explosions hit Boston Marathon finishing line leaving three people dead and at least 140 injured

The first explosion came at about 14:50 local time on the north side of Boylston Street, about two hours after the winners crossed the line.

There was initial confusion and panic. Some runners fell to the floor while police and bystanders ran to help those caught in the blast.

Then seconds later, another explosion ripped into the crowd further away from the finishing line, between 50 and 100 metres from the first blast.

TV footage showed bloodied runners and spectators being treated at the scene and the road strewn with debris. Rescuers tore down temporary fencing to reach the casualties.

Medical officials speak of at least 140 injured, with injuries including severed limbs, shrapnel wounds, cuts and bruises.

At an initial news conference, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said authorities had received “no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen”.

He urged people to stay indoors and not congregate in large groups.

At a second news conference he said the death toll now stood at three. He said that no suspects were in custody.

A search thought to be related to the inquiry was under way at a flat in a Boston suburb, Boston media reported.

Police said a search warrant was issued on Monday in the Revere district but provided no further details.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said Boston would be “open” on Tuesday but that there would be “a heightened law enforcement presence”.

“There will be random checks of backpacks and other parcels. We are also asking that everyone be on a state of heightened vigilance,” he said.

FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers also appeared, saying that the inquiry involved city, state and federal officials, but refusing to give any details of the investigation.

Details of the victims have also not been revealed, however an 8-year-old boy is said to be among the dead. Quoting a family friend, Associated Press said the boy’s mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race.

Officers have already begun poring over video and photographs from the marathon.

Two other unexploded devices were reported to have been found near the end of the race but were safely defused.

State police officer Roupen Bastajian had just finished the race when he heard the blasts.

“I started running toward the blast and there were people all over the floor,” he said.

“We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing.”

A doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital said “several amputations” had been performed there.

As a massive security operation swung into operation, the Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft from within 3.5 miles of the site.

Key sites in Washington DC and New York have also seen security tightened.

Officials in Washington said no group or individual had so far said they carried out the attack.

Shortly after the blasts, a fire broke out at Boston’s JFK Library a few miles away from the explosions.

Police said the blaze might have been caused by an incendiary device but it is unclear whether it is related to the explosions.

The annual Boston Marathon this year had a field of about 23,000 runners and was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Boston Marathon is held on Patriots Day, a Massachusetts state holiday which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution in 1775.

Meanwhile British police are reviewing security plans for Sunday’s London Marathon, the next major international marathon, following events in Boston.

Nicolas Maduro proclaimed as Venezuela’s president

Nicolas Maduro has been formally proclaimed by Venezuela’s election authority as the winner of Sunday’s closely-fought presidential election.

The National Electoral Council backed the slender victory of Nicolas Maduro, the acting president, despite protests from opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

The official count indicates Nicolas Maduro won 50.7% of votes to Henrique Capriles’ 49.1%.

Following the announcement, clashes broke out between protesters and police in the capital Caracas.

Police fired tear gas at hundreds of students demonstrating in one part of the city, while elsewhere opposition supporters took to their balconies and the streets to bang pots and pans in protest.

Nicolas Maduro has been formally proclaimed by Venezuela’s election authority as the winner of Sunday’s closely-fought presidential election

Henrique Capriles had earlier urged national protests and a march on the electoral offices in the capital in the event that Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner.

He called on the National Electoral Council not to confirm the election result, citing voting irregularities, and demanded a recount.

Henrique Capriles said he regarded the election of Nicolas Maduro as “illegitimate”.

The poll was called after President Hugo Chavez died of cancer last month.

Nicolas Maduro is a former bus driver who rose to become Hugo Chavez’s vice-president and heir apparent.

Henrique Capriles said there were more than 3,200 “incidents” from Sunday’s poll that needed to be examined.

“All we’re asking is that our rights be respected, that the will of the people be respected, and that every single vote be counted, every little piece of paper,” he told a news conference broadcast on national television.

But while it has agreed to an audit of the electronic counting system, the government is rejecting calls that the ballot boxes be opened for a manual recount.

Monday saw opposition students briefly invade a hotel where international election observers are staying, demanding to know why the vote had been declared free and fair.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cuban leader Raul Castro were among the first heads of state to congratulate Nicolas Maduro on his win.

But the US has called for an audit of the results.

Asian markets dip after Boston Marathon explosions

Asian markets have dropped in early trading after two explosions hit the Boston Marathon finishing line killing three people and injuring dozens more.

Stock indexes fell by as much as 2% in Japan. South Korea and Australia also dropped, as did oil and gold prices.

Earlier on Monday, US markets closed lower after the blasts accelerated a sell-off started by weak economic data.

Analysts said that investors would be more risk averse in coming sessions and would focus on Asia’s problem areas.

“This is a kind of unknown-unknown event and a stark reminder that the world continues to remain unsafe,” said Vishnu Varathan of Japanese bank Mizhuo.

“While it has happened far away from Asia, it is likely to trigger concerns and fears over Asia’s known-unknowns.

“You have the Korean peninsula tensions, the territorial dispute between China and Japan, and other issues in the China Sea which all pose risks if they flare up,” he added.

Asian markets have dropped in early trading after two explosions hit the Boston Marathon finishing line killing three people and injuring dozens more

Faced with these problems, investors reacted to the news of the blasts by trying to cut risks, not least because in recent weeks stock markets in Asia have seen strong gains.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was recently trading 1% lower, while South Korea’s Kospi was down 0.9% and Australia’s ASX 200 shed 0.8%.

In the US, all three of the country’s main stock indexes closed lower on Monday. The Dow Jones ended the day down 1.8%, while the S&P shut 2.3% lower and the Nasdaq shed 2.4%.

Oil prices dropped in Asia, with US light crude down by 1.9%, and Brent crude sliding 1.6%. Gold continued to fall, extending Monday’s 10% fall and continuing to hit its lowest levels in two years.

By contrast, the Japanese yen gained against the US dollar because many investors see it as a less risky asset.

“The developments in Boston are likely to trigger an initial reaction of caution,” said Michael McCarthy, chief market analyst at CMC Markets.

The Japanese currency rose as much as 2.5% to 96.61 yen against the US dollar in New York on Monday. It also gained nearly 3% against the euro, rising as high as 125.98 yen against the single European currency.

Analysts said that many large Japanese banks or pension funds tended to sell riskier assets during times of uncertainty, bringing the money back into the country, resulting in an appreciation in the yen’s value.

Knowing this, other global investors also buy the yen, or yen-denominated assets, to benefit from this gain. However, once the risks recede, then investors tended to sell their yen and use the proceeds to again invest in riskier assets.

Analysts said the blasts had further dented investor morale in both Asia and elsewhere, which had already been shaken by weaker-than-expected Chinese and US data.

They also pointed to a number of potential Asian flashpoints that caused investors to be cautious, such as the heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has recently conducted a nuclear test, and in recent weeks it has also threatened to attack South Korea, Japan and US bases in the region.

Meanwhile, the spat between China and Japan over a set of disputed islands in the East China Sea has flared up. The issue is yet to be resolved and continues to remain a bone of contention between Asia’s two biggest economies.

Analysts have often have warned that an escalation of any of these issues was likely to hurt the region’s economic growth.

“Asia is increasingly relying on intra-regional trade to sustain its economic growth,” said Vishnu Varathan of Mizhuo.

“Any full-blown conflict between Asian nations will hurt trade and could adversely impact economic growth.”

Boston Marathon explosions: Saudi suspect held in custody and third blast at JFK Library

2

Boston Marathon explosions killed at least two people and injured up to 60 after two large bombs went off near the finish line of the famous race, according to new reports.

Law enforcement sources told one newspaper that 12 people had been killed, but Boston police have only confirmed two dead. The sources added that the first explosion happened at the Fairmont Hotel.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said at an afternoon press conference that there was a third, uncontrolled explosion at the JFK Library, though there were no injuries reported.

It is being reported that a Saudi-Arabian suspect is being held in custody at a Boston hospital on suspicion of involvement, though reports were quickly quashed by the Boston police department. A shadowy figure was also spotted on CCTV around 20 minutes before the bombs went off.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said there were two loud explosions about five seconds apart, and emergency vehicles crowded the scene.

Police told the Boston Globe that are they still finding “secondary devices”, and pleading with anyone still in the area to leave at once. A controlled explosion was set for outside the city library.

Sources told the New York Post that up to 12 people had been killed in the two blasts, and further reported that a suspect is in custody at a Boston-area hospital and is being closely guarded.

CBS News reports that police are now looking at surveillance video showing someone carrying multiple backpacks into the area about 20 minutes before explosions.

One witness said “there was blood everywhere”.

CNN revealed that families from last December’s Newtown tragedy were at the scene, though none of them were reported injured.

Boston’s Lenox Hotel that serves as the headquarters for the Boston Marathon was locked down on Monday after a security incident near the finish line. Two blasts were heard by reporters in the media center.

Authorities closed off the finish line and urged anyone in the area to stay away from trash bins.

In response to the attacks, both the White House and New York’s Times Square were given extra security measures. The White House released in a statement that President Barack Obama received a briefing from Homeland Security advisor Lisa Monaco and other members of his staff in the Oval Office.

“The president called Boston Mayor Tom Menino and expressed his concern for those who were injured and to make clear that his administration is ready to provide needed support as they respond to this incident.”

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is expected to lead a moment of silence in the House from the Speaker’s chair for the victims of the Boston bombing at around 6:30 p.m. EST, and the president is expected to speak at 6:10 p.m. EST.

Andrea Storer, who witnessed the blast, told the Boston Globe: “It was huge. There had to be people killed. There had to be.”

NECN reporter Jackie Bruno posted on Twitter: “I saw people’s legs blown off. Horrific. Two explosions. Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror.”

Ke$ha leads worst-dressed at MTV Movie Awards 2013 with lace trousers and fringe vest

Ke$ha reinforced her position as the queen of the worst dressed lists at the MTV Movie Awards 2013 on Sunday night, as her 90’s inspired outfit hit all the worst trends from the decade.

Ke$ha’s sheer white lace trousers drew unwanted attention to her lavender underwear, while her black fringe vest and matching wide brimmed hat looked better suited for the Coachella Valley Music Festival raging on 100 miles away.

Ke$ha reinforced her position as the queen of the worst dressed lists at the MTV Movie Awards 2013, as her outfit hit all the worst trends from the decade

And her white crimped hair, black lipstick and heavy racoon-eye makeup wouldn’t have been approved of even by the biggest goth fans on the era.

Hoever, Ke$ha had some competition for worst-dressed of the evening from stars including Kylie Minogue, who had a rare fashion fail in a chainmail minidress.

The Paco Rabanne outfit featured sheer panels, including one through which Kylie Minogue’s tummy button could be seen, and did little to flatter the singer’s famously petite figure.

Chloe Moretz, 16, also got it wrong in a denim patchwork-style dress, which would have been better suited to an awards ceremony several decades ago.

Another wacky choice came from rapper Macklemore.

Macklemore could have made the dapper dressed list if he would have stuck to his bright royal blue suit and black leather tie.

But the singer then covered it all up in a feather print and gold trimmed cape that would remind and Disney fan of the Beast himself.

Hana Mae Lee had the right idea with her figure-hugging cut-out frock.

The Pitch Perfect star was anything but sexy – capping of her black ensemble with a hat designed like a cigarette butt.
