Vitamin D’s role in protecting against cancer, diabetes and dementia queried

0

French researchers have cast doubt on the value of vitamin D supplements to protect against diseases such as cancers, diabetes and dementia.

Scientists writing in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology suggest low vitamin D levels do not cause ill health, although they did not look at bone diseases.

More clinical trials on non-skeletal diseases are needed, they say.

Vitamin D supplements are recommended for certain groups.

Recent evidence has shown it may also have a role to play in preventing non-bone-related diseases such as Parkinson’s, dementia, cancers and inflammatory diseases.

Prof. Philippe Autier, from the International Prevention Research Institute in Lyon, carried out a review of data from 290 prospective observational studies and 172 randomized trials looking at the effects of vitamin D levels on health outcomes, excluding bone health, up to December 2012.

A large number of the observational studies suggested that there were benefits from high vitamin D – that it could reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by up to 58%, diabetes by up to 38% and colorectal cancer by up to 33%.

But the results of the clinical trials – where participants were given vitamin D supplements – found no reduction in risk, even in people who started out with low vitamin D levels.

And a further analysis of recent randomized trials found no positive effect of vitamin D supplements on diseases occurring.

Prof. Philippe Autier said: “What this discrepancy suggests is that decreases in vitamin D levels are a marker of deteriorating health.

“Ageing and inflammatory processes involved in disease occurrence… reduce vitamin D concentrations, which would explain why vitamin D deficiency is reported in a wide range of disorders.”

Nelson Mandela daily funeral cortege planned for Pretoria

The South African government has announced that a funeral cortege bearing Nelson Mandela’s body will travel through the streets of Pretoria daily on three days before his burial next Sunday.

The government said the cortege will leave a morgue on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning to go to the Union Buildings where his body will lie in state.

Mourners are being encouraged to line the route.

Meanwhile, vigils for the former leader are continuing across South Africa.

Hundreds of mourners have gathered outside Nelson Mandela’s home in Johannesburg’s northern suburb of Houghton where he died, and thousands of flowers and candles have been laid outside.

Nelson Mandela – South Africa’s first black president – died on Thursday evening aged 95.

On Saturday, the government published further details of the 10-day state funeral, saying as many people as possible would be given the opportunity to pay their last respects.

On Tuesday, an official memorial service will be held at the FNB Stadium on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

When the three days of lying in state are over, Nelson Mandela’s body will then be flown from an air force base in Pretoria to Qunu in the Eastern Cape for burial.

Qunu is where Nelson Mandela grew up and later retired to.

Flags at all official buildings will fly at half mast throughout the period and books of condolence are being circulated across the country and online for people to post tributes, record memories and express their emotions.

Sunday has been designated an official day of prayer and reflection and President Jacob Zuma urged South Africans to go to stadiums, halls, churches, temples or synagogues.

“We should, while mourning, also sing at the top of our voices, dance and do whatever we want to do, to celebrate the life of this outstanding revolutionary who kept the spirit of freedom alive and led us to a new society. Let us sing for Madiba,” Jacob Zuma said, using Nelson Mandela’s clan name.

Meanwhile, a government statement recalled Nelson Mandela’s own thoughts when asked how he wished to be remembered.

“It would be very egotistical of me to say how I would like to be remembered,” Nelson Mandela said.

“I’d leave that entirely to South Africans. I would just like a simple stone on which is written, <<Mandela>>.”

Jang Sung-taek footage removed from North Korean documentary

North Korean state TV is reported to have removed footage of Jang Sung-taek – Kim Jong-un’s uncle and key aide – from a documentary, following reports that he has been dismissed.

South Korean news agency Yonhap said the original film about Kim Jong-un had already been broadcast nine times.

But when it aired again on Saturday, images of his uncle Jang Sung-taek, had been edited out, Yonhap reports.

On Tuesday South Korean intelligence said Jang Sung-taek, 67, had been removed.

Jang Sung-taek had held senior posts in the ruling communist Korean Workers’ Party and the National Defense Commission, North Korea’s top military body.

Intelligence officials also said two of his close aides appeared to have been executed for corruption.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) said it has made the assessment based on information provided by multiple sources.

If confirmed, Jang Sung-taek’s removal would be the biggest upheaval in North Korea’s leadership since Kim Jong-un succeeded his father, analysts say.

Kim Jong-un took over after Kim Jong-il died in 2011.

Jang Sung-taek is married to the elder sister of Kim Jong-il.

He has often been pictured beside Kim Jong-un and was seen by some observers as the power behind the throne.

Despite his family ties to the leadership and senior status, Jang Sung-taek has been targeted by purges in the past.

In 2004, despite his place in the Kim family, Jang Sung-taek disappeared from public view.

One report at the time, citing South Korean intelligence, said Jang Sung-taek had been placed under house arrest.

Other reports suggested Jang Sung-taek had been sent for “re-education”. However, two years later Jang Sung-taek appeared to have been reinstated.

Mick and Chris Jagger team up for two new duets

Mick Jagger has teamed up with his younger brother Chris for two new duets to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chris’ debut album.

Chris Jagger, who has been performing as a solo act since the 1970s, admits Mick’s 50th anniversary celebrations with the Rolling Stones last year have prompted the younger Jagger to reminisce about his time in the industry and now his new project, Concertina Jack, has been released as a nod to his own milestone.

In a post on his website, Chris Jagger wrote: “I’m not a big one for anniversaries, but in the brew ha ha revolving around The Rolling Stones and 50 years I realized it’s 40 years since my first record came out.”

Venus at its brightest night of the year

This weekend, Venus is about as bright as it can get.

Venus is an unusually bright evening star this month because it’s swinging toward Earth in its orbit.

Venus is about as bright as it can get
Venus is about as bright as it can get

That means its apparent size is increasing, and it’s still at an angle that reflects a healthy fraction of the sun’s rays.

Every night, Venus will be lower in the sky when the sun sets, and by January 2014 it will be lost in the sun’s glare.

WTO Ministerial Conference 2013: $1 trillion global trade agreement after Bali talks

Ministers from 159 countries attending the 9th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Bali, Indonesia, have reached a deal intended to boost global trade.

The WTO’s first comprehensive agreement involves an effort to simplify the procedures for doing business across borders.

There will also be improved duty-free access for goods sold by the world’s poorest countries.

The deal, which could add about $1 trillion to world trade, gives developing nations more scope to increase farm subsidies.

“For the first time in our history, the WTO has truly delivered,” said WTO chief Roberto Azevedo, as the organization reached its first comprehensive agreement since it was founded in 1995.

“This time the entire membership came together. We have put the ‘world’ back in World Trade Organization,” he said.

However, the deal was earlier criticized by some development campaigners, who said it was not going far enough.

It is worth spelling out something what is not covered by this – tariffs or taxes on imported goods.

Dealing with them has been the bread butter of past trade rounds – but not for this deal.

The core of this agreement is what is called trade facilitation. This is about reducing the costs and delays involved in international trade. It is often described as “cutting red tape”.

Some analysts suggest the benefits could be large. An influential Washington think tank has put the potential gains to the world economy at close to $1 trillion and 20m million jobs.

It also estimates the cost of administrative barrier as double the cost of tariffs.

The rich countries have agreed to help the poorer WTO members with implementing this agreement.

Another important aspect of the Bali package is about enabling poor countries to sell their goods more easily. This part is about tariffs, and also quota limits on imports.

Rich countries and the more advanced developing countries have agreed to cut tariffs on products from the poorest nations.

Bob Dylan’s Fender Stratocaster electric guitar sells for record $965,000 at New York auction

Bob Dylan’s Fender Stratocaster electric guitar has been sold at New York auction for a record $965,000.

The electric guitar played by Bob Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival had been in the possession of a New Jersey family for 48 years after he left it on a plane.

The pilot’s daughter Dawn Peterson had the electric guitar authenticated on a television programme on US broadcaster PBS.

The festival in Newport, Rhode Island, is often cited as the performance where Bob Dylan “went electric”.

Bob Dylan’s move “changed the structure of folk music”, Newport Folk Festival founder George Wein, 88, told the Associated Press news agency.

“The minute Dylan went electric, all these young people said, <<Bobby’s going electric. We’re going electric, too>>.”

At the time, the three-song set drew boos from the crowd, who had come expecting Bob Dylan’s traditional acoustic folk performance.

Dawn Peterson said on the PBS programme History Detectives that her father, the private plane’s pilot, asked Bob Dylan’s management firm what to do with the guitar but nobody ever got back to him.

Experts matched the wood grain on the instrument with a close-up color photo taken during Dylan’s set at the festival.

Recently, Bob Dylan and Dawn Peterson quietly settled a legal dispute over the instrument. Details of the settlement are not known.

Auction house Christie’s had estimated the guitar would sell for $300,000-$500,000. The buyer has not been identified.

North Korea deports Merrill Newman

North Korea has decided to deport US citizen Merrill Newman, who had been detained in the country since October.

State news agency KCNA says Merrill Newman was expelled on “humanitarian grounds” after confessing to “crimes” in the 1950-53 war and “apologizing”.

Merrill Newman, 85, had been held on charges of “hostile acts” against the North, while visiting as a tourist.

The US state department welcomed the decision to free Merrill Newman, who has now arrived in Beijing.

“We are pleased that Mr. Merrill Newman has been allowed to depart the DPRK (North Korea) and re-join his family. We welcome the DPRK’s decision to release him,” said state department spokeswoman Marie Harf.

“I’m very glad to be on my way home,” Merrill Newman told Japanese reporters after arriving in the Chinese capital.

North Korea has decided to deport US citizen Merrill Newman, who had been detained in the country since October

“And I appreciate the tolerance the DPRK government has given to me to be on my way. I feel good. I want to go home to see my wife.”

Last week, KCNA said Merrill Newman had ordered the deaths of North Korean soldiers and civilians in the Korean War.

Although Merrill Newman did serve during the Korean War, his family says he is the victim of mistaken identity.

Merril Newman – a pensioner from Palo Alto, California – had been held in North Korea since being taken off a plane as he prepared to leave the country on October 26, following a 10-day tourist visit.

In a video released by North Korean authorities last week, Merrill Newman was shown reading his alleged apology, dated November 9.

It claims he was an “adviser of the Kuwol Unit of the UN Korea 6th Partisan Regiment part of the Intelligence Bureau of the Far East Command” – an apparent reference to one of the special operations units acting against the North.

Merrill Newman apparently confessed to trying to contact surviving soldiers during his trip as a tourist.

The statement added: “Please forgive me.”

However, Merrill Newman’s family said there must have been “some dreadful misunderstanding” as another veteran, also named Merrill Newman, was awarded a Silver Star medal for his efforts during the Korean War.

Jens Weidmann added that low interest rates had been encouraging house building and private consumption in Germany, although trade had been weakening.

The European Central Bank (ECB) cut its key interest rate from 0.5% to 0.25% a month ago, and kept it at that level at Thursday’s meeting.

ECB president Mario Draghi said the eurozone’s economy remained “subdued”.

The Bundesbank did not make a forecast for 2015 in June, but is now predicting growth of 2.0% for that year.

Parkinson’s disease linked to common pesticides

A new research has found that farm workers and people living in rural or agricultural communities tend to suffer from higher rates of Parkinson’s.

Health experts have long suspected a link between common pesticides and Parkinson’s disease.

Farm workers and people living in rural or agricultural communities tend to suffer from higher rates of Parkinson's
Farm workers and people living in rural or agricultural communities tend to suffer from higher rates of Parkinson’s

The new research reveals how crop chemicals and your genes may come together to increase your Parkinson’s risk – and how you might one day be able to safeguard yourself.

The research, appearing in the journal Cell, outlines first-of-its-kind lab work involving stem cells. After creating the type of mutated brain cell that past studies have linked with greater Parkinson’s risk, the research team exposed that mutation to the common farm pesticides paraquat and maneb.

“Even at very low concentrations, the pesticides killed these nerve cells, which shows how they would cause Parkinson’s,” explains study coauthor Stuart A. Lipton, MD, PhD, of Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.

US unemployment rate to five-year low of 7% in November 2013

The US Labor Department has announced the unemployment rate fell to a five-year low of 7% in November.

Payroll figures also showed that 203,000 jobs were created last month, more than predicted, as the US economy displayed more signs of strength.

The monthly non-farm payroll figure is watched closely by economists.

Analysts say these indications of strong growth could mean that the Federal Reserve will start to unwind its massive stimulus programme soon.

However, the November figure might have been distorted. Some federal workers who were counted as jobless in the October – because of the 16-day partial government shutdown – returned to their jobs last month.

The latest data also showed that the October and September non-farm payroll figures, which had also been strong, were even better than their first estimates.

The US unemployment rate fell to a five-year low in November
The US unemployment rate fell to a five-year low in November

Job gains for those two months were revised upwards by 8,000.

Chris Williamson, chief economist at research firm Markit, said the data indicated the US labor market was “buoyant”.

“The decline pushes the jobless rate down to its lowest since November 2008 and closer towards the Fed’s threshold of 6.5%, which it wants to see breached before it considers tightening policy via higher interest rates,” he said.

But he added that a decision on when the Fed might start to taper its stimulus programme was still not clear cut.

The labor market figures follow news earlier this week that economic growth, as measured by GDP, in the third quarter of the year was revised up to an annual pace of 3.6% from a previous estimate of 2.8%.

Also on Friday, the US Commerce Department said that consumer spending increased in October, though wages and salaries were barely changed.

Edward Hopper’s East Wind Over Weehawken sells for $40 million at Christie’s auction

Edward Hopper’s painting East Wind Over Weehawken has sold for $40 million, setting an auction record for the US artist.

East Wind Over Weehawken, a Depression era view of New Jersey created in 1934, was sold by Christie’s to an anonymous telephone bidder for almost double its pre-sale estimate.

The previous record was $26.9 million, set in 2009, for his work Hotel Window.

Edward Hopper, who died in 1967, was famed for his depictions of modern American life.

The realist painter gained widest recognition for his work in oils, but also produced prints and watercolors which encompassed both urban and rural scenes.

East Wind Over Weehawken, which he considered one of his best artworks, was part of the Pennsylvania Museum of the Fine Arts’ collection for more than 60 years.

The proceeds will be used to create a fund for the purchase of new artworks.

The painting depicts a desolate, dark green clapboard house with a “For Sale” sign beside it, reflecting the melancholy of the time.

Elton John’s shows in Russia will go ahead as planned

Elton John’s concerts in Russia “will go ahead as planned” despite concerns over the country’s crackdown on gay rights, the Russian promoters announced.

In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a national law banning the “propaganda of homos**uality” to minors.

Elton John vowed last month to raise the issue on stage when he plays tonight’s sold out date in Moscow and a show in the Volga city of Kazan on Saturday.

The singer said he also planned to “meet with the LGBT community” there.

Russian promoters, SAV Entertainment, issued a statement reassuring fans that the two shows would be going ahead.

“Despite the groundless rumors spread by the internet and media that Elton John’s concerts in Russia could be cancelled, the organizer assures you that Elton John’s shows in Moscow and Kazan will go ahead as planned,” it said.

Elton John will be the first major Western star known for his support of gay rights to play in Russia since the new law, which critics fear could be used to ban any gay rights event.

Storm Xaver hits Northern Europe killing at least 6 people

Winter storm Xaver hit Northern Europe claiming three lives in Poland, bringing to six the toll of people killed in hurricane-force winds.

Xaver blew a tree on to a car in Poraj, northern Poland, killing three people inside.

Most flights have been cancelled at Gdansk airport and there is serious travel disruption in Germany too.

Many schools have been closed across the north of Poland and Germany. Parts of Hamburg have been flooded.

In Poland at least 100,000 homes are without electricity because of severed power lines.

The port of Hamburg, which handles a huge amount of European trade, is at a standstill.

Hamburg has experienced its biggest tidal surges since the early 1990s. The city’s fish market and some streets by the river Elbe were flooded.

There was also limited flooding in the Netherlands – officials say the sea dykes withstood the onslaught. The Dutch and German authorities cancelled many flights and train services.

The Oeresund road-rail bridge, linking Copenhagen in Denmark with Malmo in southern Sweden, has reopened. It had been closed on Thursday evening amid high winds.

A woman died in Denmark after a lorry was blown over.

In Scotland a truck driver was also killed on Thursday when his vehicle was blown over near Edinburgh. A man was crushed by a falling tree in Nottinghamshire, central England.

Winds of up to 142 mph battered Scotland.

England’s east coast experienced its worst tidal surge in 60 years, while in north Wales residents had to be rescued by lifeboat crews.

Two sailors were reportedly swept overboard from a ship 14 miles off the southern Swedish coast, and air-sea rescue services failed to find them.

In the low-lying Netherlands, the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier was closed off for the first time in six years. Dutch authorities said they had issued the highest possible flood warning for four areas in the north and north-west of the country.

There was some flooding in Dordrecht and Rotterdam. But rail services are generally running normally in the Netherlands, the NOS news agency reports.

In Schleswig-Holstein, north Germany, many rail services have been halted. Fallen trees are littering railway lines.

The Dutch airline KLM cancelled dozens of flights from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Thursday, while more than 120 were cancelled or diverted at Hamburg airport.

But Schiphol flights are now back on schedule, NOS reports.

Flights from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports in Scotland were cancelled.

Rail travel was badly affected, with all train services in Scotland cancelled because of debris on the lines and damage to equipment. Services in northern England were also hit.

Ferries to Germany from Sweden and Denmark were cancelled.

Many South Africans heard the news of his death, which was announced just before midnight, upon waking Friday, and they flocked to his home in Johannesburg’s leafy Houghton neighborhood.

In a church service in Cape Town, retired archbishop Desmond Tutu said Nelson Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president, would want South Africans themselves to be his “memorial” by adhering to the values of unity and democracy that he embodied.

“All of us here in many ways amazed the world, a world that was expecting us to be devastated by a racial conflagration,” Desmond Tutu said, recalling how Nelson Mandela helped unite South Africa as it dismantled apartheid, the cruel system of white rule, and prepared for all-race elections in 1994.

Nelson Mandela, also known by his clan name Madiba, was a “very human person” with a sense of humor who took interest in people around him, said Frederik Willem de Klerk, South Africa’s last apartheid-era president. The two men negotiated the end of apartheid, finding common cause in often tense circumstances, and shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

In summarizing Nelson Mandela’s legacy, F.W. de Klerk told eNCA television: “Never and never again should there be in South Africa the suppression of anyone by another.”

Qantas credit rating downgraded to junk status by S&P

Standard & Poor’s has cut Qantas airline credit rating to “junk”.

The downgrade could increase the Australian airline’s borrowing costs and sends a warning to investors.

The move by S&P comes after Qantas issued a surprise profit warning and announced 1,000 job cuts on Thursday.

The carrier expects to make losses of up to A$300 million ($271million) in the July-to-December period.

S&P said the rating cut reflected its view “that intense competition in the airline industry has weakened Qantas’ business risk profile to fair from satisfactory, and financial risk profile to significant from intermediate.”

It lowered the carrier’s rating from the lowest investment grade, BBB-, to BB+.

Gareth Evans, chief financial officer of Qantas, said the downgrade was “not unexpected” and “highlights the unprecedented pressures that the Qantas Group is facing from several external forces but particularly from an uneven playing field in the Australian aviation market”.

However, Gareth Evans added that Qantas “retains a strong financial position, including a large cash balance and a significant asset base”.

Qantas said in a statement that it had a cash balance of A$2.8 billion as of June 30 2013 and had reduced its debt by A$1 billion in the last financial year.

Moody’s rating agency warned on Thursday that it may also lower the Australian flag carrier’s rating.

Qantas has been hurt by a range of factors in recent times including higher fuel costs, subdued global travel demand and increased competition.

The airline has claimed that its ownership rules, which limit total foreign holding of Qantas to 49%, with foreign airlines allowed to own just 35%, have further hurt its growth.

Qantas has argued that limits on its foreign ownership have benefited arch rival Virgin, which has attracted investment from foreign carriers Etihad, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand.

Last month, the airline backed a suggestion by Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey that these rules should be changed.

Qantas has also said it needs government action to help it compete more effectively.

Australia’s PM Tony Abbott indicated that the government was unlikely to give Qantas any financial support.
