Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death: Four people arrested as part of investigation

New York police have reportedly arrested four people as part of an investigation into the suspected heroin overdose death of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Some 350 bags of heroin were also seized during the arrests in Lower Manhattan, unnamed police officials were quoted by US media as saying.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, was found dead at his Greenwich Village home on Sunday with a syringe in his arm.

Dozens of suspected heroin bags were found near his body.

Some were stamped with the ace of hearts and the ace of spades, which are said to be brand names for heroin that street dealers use.

No definitive cause of death has been given, as police try to piece together his final hours using surveillance video and inspecting computers found in his home.

Police say the heroin found in Hoffman’s apartment was not mixed with the synthetic narcotic fentanyl.

Fentanyl has been blamed for a number of recent overdose deaths.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is reported to have withdrawn a total of $1,200 in six visits to a cash machine the day before his death.

The acting world has been paying tribute to a man described as one of the finest actors of his generation.

Lights along theatre marquees on New York’s Broadway are due to be dimmed later in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who earned three Tony award nominations for his work in theatre work in the city.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is survived by his partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children, has spoken candidly in the past of his struggle against drug addiction.

North Korea and South Korea agree to hold family reunions in February

North Korea and South Korea have agreed to hold reunions for families separated after the Korean War in February, following calls from Pyongyang to improve ties.

If held, they would be the first reunions since 2010.

In September, North Korea cancelled a planned reunion, blaming “hostility” from South Korea.

The move comes ahead of annual US-South Korea military drills later this month, which are expected to anger North Korea.

Pyongyang has asked Seoul to cancel the annual drills – a request that has been refused.

North Korea has in the past cancelled or suspended reunion meetings in retaliation for South Korean actions it opposes. Critics have accused North Korea of using reunions as a bargaining chip.

North Korea and South Korea have agreed to hold reunions for families separated after the Korean War in February

Millions were separated from their families by the division of the Korean peninsula after the 1950-1953 war.

The reunion events are highly emotional occasions where North and South Koreans meet briefly in the North before heading home again.

The program was suspended after North Korea’s shelling of a South Korean border island in November 2010.

The reunions are scheduled to be held from February 20 to February 25, at the Mount Kumgang resort in North Korea.

Before the meeting, Lee Duk-haeng, head of South Korea’s delegation, said: “We will make all-out efforts to come up with good results such as on a schedule for the family reunion so that we can deliver good news to separated families.

“We will do our best to start the new year off on the right foot for the South-North relationship.”

In September, Pyongyang cancelled the planned reunions of 100 families, blaming South Korea’s “confrontational attitude”.

It is estimated that there are about 72,000 South Koreans – nearly half of them aged over 80 – on the waiting list for a chance to join the family reunion events.

However, only a few hundred participants are selected each time. Most do not know whether their relatives are still alive, because the two countries prevent their citizens from exchanging mail, phone calls and emails.

Last month, North Korea began urging an end to slander and “hostile acts”, but many here remain skeptical that warmer ties are so easy to secure.

Vladimir Putin cuddles Persian leopard at Sochi National Park

President Vladimir Putin has taken senior Olympics officials on a tour of a Persian leopard sanctuary ahead of the Winter Games in Sochi.

Vladimir Putin tried to calm one leopard cub, which had become agitated and attacked two journalists, Russian media said.

The visit to Sochi National Park comes amid efforts to show the games are positive for the environment.

Vladimir Putin is well known for his encounters with wild animals which have helped burnish his outdoors image.

In the past, the president has been shown on state TV tagging whales, saving a TV crew from a tiger and taking to the skies to fly with Siberian cranes.

Vladimir Putin drove Jean Claude Killy, former French Olympian and International Olympic Committee (IOC) official, and IOC Executive Director Gilbert Felli to the nature reserve near the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

But a six-month-old Persian leopard cub, Grom (Thunder), attacked two journalists inside a cage, scratching one on the hand and biting the other on the knee, RIA Novosti news agency said.

Footage broadcast on state TV showed the Russian president cuddling the leopard seemingly at ease, commenting: “I like animals, it seems I have a feeling for them. We liked each other.”

Russia is working to re-introduce the Persian leopard to southern Russia where they became extinct in 1970.

“We’ve decided to restore the population of the Persian leopard because of the Olympic Games,” Vladimir Putin said.

During the visit Vladimir Putin insisted that the enormous construction effort to prepare Sochi for the Games had greatly improved the environment.

Environmentalists have accused the Russian authorities of damaging the environment beside the sea and in the mountains of the Sochi area during construction for the Games.

Pakistan: Taliban negotiators blame government for peace talks delay

Taliban negotiators in Pakistan have condemned the failure of government representatives to meet them in Islamabad, as preliminary peace efforts got off to a chaotic start.

The government side had asked for clarification about the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) team.

The militants have been waging an insurgency inside Pakistan since 2007.

Later, a bomb outside a hotel in a Shia neighborhood of the north-western city of Peshawar left at least eight dead.

Twenty-six people were injured in the blast which Shafqat Malik, leader of the police Bomb Disposal Unit, said was a suicide attack.

The government and Taliban representatives had been due to start charting a “roadmap” for talks.

Many observers were puzzled by the government side’s approach. The Taliban swiftly made clear there were to be no additions to their team, and urged the government side to begin talks and see for themselves whether the team had a mandate.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the talks initiative last week, following a spate of attacks.

In January more than 100 people, including many soldiers, died in Taliban attacks across the country. Thousands have been killed in recent years.

Barbara Walters defends Woody Allen over Dylan Farrow abuse claims

Barbara Walters defended Woody Allen from allegations by his estranged daughter Dylan Farrow that he assaulted her when she was a child during Monday’s edition of The View.

Other panelists on the show tried to argue that Woody Allen’s previous attraction to younger women could give credibility to the claims, but Barbara Walters shut them down repeatedly.

“I know Mia [Farrow], I have a good relationship with her,” Barbara Walters explained.

“But I’ve been with Woody many times with his two daughters, he’s got almost a twenty-year-old marriage … I have rarely seen a father as sensitive, and as loving and as caring as Woody is to his daughters. … I don’t know about Dylan, I can only tell you about what I’ve seen now, that it’s a good marriage and that he’s a loving, caring father.”

“She has nothing to gain by coming out and saying this,” Jenny McCarthy said.

“Supposedly, she’s very angry,” Barbara Walters responded.

“But she’s doing it now because he’s up for an award, so the question is does your personal life interfere with the award?”

Ukraine opposition seeks constitution change

Ukraine’s parliament is continuing crisis talks to try to change the constitution – a move aimed at curtailing the powers of President Viktor Yanukovych.

This is a key demand by the opposition, who has warned that parliament’s failure to act now will further inflame mass anti-government protests.

Pro-presidential MPs oppose the move, and the speaker has given until Wednesday morning to find a compromise.

Kiev’s decision to reject an EU deal in November triggered the protests.

At least six people have died in violence since then, and a number of Ukrainian politicians have warned that the country might plunge into civil war.

The opposition is pushing for a return to the 2004 constitution, which would mean President Viktor Yanukovych losing some of the powers he has gained since his election in 2010.

The changes envisage that parliament – not the president – will be appointing the prime minister and cabinet members as well as regional governors.

There were emotional scenes earlier on Tuesday and MPs began debating the issue.

“I call on everyone to take the constitutional route and stop dictatorship,” the leader of the opposition Udar (Punch) Party and former world heavyweight boxing champion, Vitaliy Klitschko, told parliament.

“Let us reinstate the constitution that allows MPs to take decisions instead of just pushing buttons.”

Vitaliy Klitschko also stressed that snap presidential elections were crucial to regain the trust of the people.

But the leader of President Viktor Yanukovych’s Regions Party in parliament, Oleksandr Yefremov, accused the opposition of being irresponsible.

“They [opposition leaders] are fighting not for what people want, but for power,” he said in a speech delivered amid shouting.

“Ukraine is going through perhaps the most dramatic period in its recent history. Any further escalation of the conflict may lead to civil confrontation and result in catastrophic consequences,” he added.

At one point during the proceedings, some opposition MPs shouted “murderers!”.

They were referring to the death of protesters over recent weeks as anti-government activists clashed with riot police.

Protesters blame the government for the deaths, but officials reject these accusations.

Later on Tuesday, the speaker of parliament, Volodymyr Rybak, gave lawmakers until 10:00 local time on Wednesday to try to find a compromise on the constitutional changes.

Satya Nadella appointed as Microsoft’s next CEO

Satya Nadella will be Microsoft’s next chief executive, the technology giant has announced.

Indian-born Satya Nadella is currently Microsoft’s head of Cloud and Enterprise, which builds and runs the firm’s computing platforms and developer tools.

Satya Nadella takes over from Steve Ballmer who announced plans to step down last year.

Company’s founder Bill Gates said there was “no better person to lead Microsoft”.

Bill Gates is stepping down as chairman, it was also announced, but will take up a new role as a technology adviser and will also retain a seat on Microsoft’s board.

Microsoft’s lead independent director John Thompson will take over as chairman.

“Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionized the world through technology, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been chosen to lead the company,” said Satya Nadella.

“The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly.”

Satya Nadella will be Microsoft’s next chief executive
Satya Nadella will be Microsoft’s next chief executive

Satya Nadella, 46, is Microsoft’s third chief executive. The Hyderabad-born executive joined the company in 1992 and has degrees in electronics, computer science and business administration.

He previously led its server and tools business before being put in charge of the unit that built Microsoft’s Cloud OS service, which powers products such as Bing, Skype and Xbox Live.

“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Bill Gates.

“Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.”

Bill Gates’ appointment as a technology adviser is seen as significant, suggesting he may again take a more hands-on role in the company he founded nearly 40 years ago.

Satya Nadella’s appointment ends months of speculation over who would succeed Steve Ballmer, who announced his intention to stand down in August last year.

At one stage incoming chairman John Thompson said more than 100 possible candidates had been identified.

Rumored to be among them were the boss of car giant Ford, Alan Mulally, and Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop.

Investors have been calling for new leadership at the Microsoft, saying it needs a significant shakeup in order to become more innovative and profitable.

Insurance for the Self-Employed

Tradesman liability insurance is something that every self-employed person must have by law. There are two main parts of this insurance: public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance. If you are self employed but do not have any employees who work for you, then you don’t need the employer’s liability insurance. Public liability insurance, while not required by law, is highly recommended and will protect you from a number of problems.

What public liability insurance covers is any claims that could be made against you by a third party. For a construction worker, this might be someone walking past your site who trips over a tool and is badly injured. For someone working as a builder, plumber, electrician, or other trades that involve entering a client’s house, this will cover the accidental destruction of property in the owner’s house, whether or not it is caused directly by the work you are doing.

Employer’s liability insurance

Employer’s liability insurance, put simply, covers the possible injury or death of your employees in the event that you are sued for damages resulting in your negligence. This will typically cover the amount that the employee or their family is asking for as well as the associated legal expenses. This type of insurance is typically sold along with public liability insurance as the two go hand-in-hand.

There are many other types of insurance that a self-employed person will need to have or at least consider depending on the type of business you have. Contractors, builders, and other construction tradesmen will probably need contractor’s all risks insurance, which will cover everything from employee’s tools; the property on which the work is being done; and loss of materials, tools, and equipment due to theft or damage.

Personal insurance

Personal insurance is something that many people overlook, but it is extremely important for self-employed people, whether or not you have employees. Also called personal accident insurance, it will cover you as the owner if you are injured and not able to work for a period of time. It will provide you with a monthly tax-free income during the time you are unable to work, hospital cash that goes toward covering hospital bills, and may include a lump sum payout depending on the injury. This is another type of insurance that is highly recommended for construction worker, but is useful for any person who is self-employed, including hairdressers and beauticians.

For those in the construction industry or those who use expensive machinery and tools, you may want machinery and tool insurance. In the construction industry in particular, there are a lot of chances for theft, accident, damage, and injury to occur as a result of the heavy machinery being used. This insurance will also typically cover damages caused by third parties.

When selecting the types of insurance needed for your specific trade, take your time and do your research. Check first to see which types of insurance are required by law, and which ones you think you will really need. It’s important also to measure the cost of the insurance against the risk of not having it. It is always better to have more coverage that you think you might need, even though if you are just starting out it may be financially difficult to have insurance.

Mattress Mack loses $7 million in Pigskin Promotion Super Bowl bet

Gallery Furniture owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is set to lose $7 million after promising a full refund to customers if the Seahawks beat Broncos in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The Seahawks duly won the game 43 to 8, which means about 1,000 customers will now get their orders for free.

Jim McIngvale is well-known for his attention-grabbing ploys.

Though substantial, the loss amounts to only 6% of Jim McIngvale’s annual income. He says it is good marketing.

Mattress Mack ran the Super Bowl promotion for 10 days at his two Gallery Furniture stores.

To win, customers had to purchase at least $6,000-worth of furniture and have it delivered before kickoff on Sunday.

The average customer who was eligible for the refund deal bought around $7,000 worth of furniture.

Jim McIngvale is philosophical about the loss and says his business is getting priceless media coverage.

It is not the first time Mattress Mack has pulled this kind of stunt.

Earlier this year, he refunded almost $700,000 to customers who bet correctly on the Super Bowl playoff victors.

In December, Mattress Mack was honoured by President George H. W, Bush for his anti-drugs campaigning, and he regularly gives talks to young people in Houston about his experience with addiction.

The Super Bowl was the most-watched television event in US history with 111.5 million, the Fox TV network has said.

World facing “tidal wave” of cancer

The world is facing a “tidal wave” of cancer, and restrictions on alcohol and sugar need to be considered, say World Health Organization (WHO) scientists.

It predicts the number of cancer cases will reach 24 million a year by 2035, but half could be prevented.

The WHO said there was now a “real need” to focus on cancer prevention by tackling smoking, obesity and drinking.

The World Cancer Research Fund said there was an “alarming” level of naivety about diet’s role in cancer.

Fourteen million people a year are diagnosed with cancer, but that is predicted to increase to 19 million by 2025, 22 million by 2030 and 24 million by 2035.

The world is facing a “tidal wave” of cancer, and restrictions on alcohol and sugar need to be considered

The developing world will bear the brunt of the extra cases.

The WHO’s World Cancer Report 2014 said the major sources of preventable cancer included:

  • Smoking
  • Infections
  • Alcohol
  • Obesity and inactivity
  • Radiation, both from the sun and medical scans
  • Air pollution and other environmental factors
  • Delayed parenthood, having fewer children and not breastfeeding

For most countries, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. However, cervical cancer dominates in large parts of Africa.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major cause. It is thought wider use of the HPV and other vaccines could prevent hundreds of thousands of cancers.

One of the report’s editors, Dr. Bernard Stewart from the University of New South Wales in Australia, said prevention had a “crucial role in combating the tidal wave of cancer which we see coming across the world”.

Dr. Bernard Stewart said human behaviour was behind many cancers such as the sunbathe “until you’re cooked evenly on both sides” approach in his native Australia.

Lenovo shares drop more than 15% over recent acquisitions

Lenovo shares have dropped by as much as 15% as investors question its recent acquisitions.

Last month, Lenovo, the world’s biggest PC maker, struck two major deals totaling about $5.2 billion.

It bought IBM’s low-end business server for $2.3 billion, and a week later purchased US mobile phone company Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion.

Google had paid $12.5 billion for the Motorola handset business less than two years ago.

Investors had started selling Lenovo shares last week on news of the Motorola deal, due to questions surrounding Motorola’s profitability.

The firm’s shares fell 8% in Hong Kong on Thursday ahead of the market’s closure for the new year holiday. When the market reopened on Tuesday they dropped more than 15% at one point, before recovering slightly to stand at 8.62 Hong Kong dollars.

Questions have been raised as to how Lenovo will integrate the acquisitions into its overall corporate strategy.

The Chinese company turned around IBM’s ThinkPad brand, and that was seen as key to Lenovo overtaking Hewlett-Packard as the world’s top PC maker in 2012.

In addition to Lenovo’s recent deals, there has been a report that the PC maker is in talks with Japan’s Sony to acquire its Vaio laptop business.

In a statement, Sony said: “The press report on a possible PC business alliance between Sony and Lenovo is inaccurate.”

Previous recipients of NME‘s lifetime achievement accolade have been largely British and include Joy Division, Paul Weller and Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.

“I find it particularly interesting that there aren’t many Americans who’ve been given this award before, so that’s flattering,” added Debbie Harry.

NME‘s editor Mike Williams said the band had been chosen in their anniversary year, adding: “They rewrote the rule book in the late ’70s by dragging punk rock to the top of the charts.”

Mike Williams called Debbie Harry, 68, “the most iconic front-woman rock ‘n’ roll has ever produced”.

Super Bowl XLVIII: Most watched TV event in US history

Super Bowl XLVIII, which saw the Seattle Seahawks triumph over the Denver Broncos, was the most-watched television event in US history, the Fox TV network has said.

The event drew 111.5 million viewers on Sunday night, it said.

It is the fourth time in five years that a Super Bowl game has set a viewership record, correspondents say.

Super Bowl XLVIII half-time show also set a record with 115.3 million viewers watching Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform live.

Those figures beat the 110.8 million delivered by Beyonce last year and the prior record of 114.0 million set by Madonna two years ago.

Initially it was feared that the one-sided nature of the 43-8 Seahawks victory might have drained some suspense from the annual telecast, but the final numbers showed that once again the Super Bowl set a new benchmark for viewing figures.

Experts say that the previous five Super Bowls are now the five most watched TV programmes in US history, eclipsing the long-running record holder for most-watched TV programme – the M*A*S*H finale in 1983 – which now ranks sixth.

Fox said that about 2.3 million people watched its webcast of the game, peaking at the end of the third quarter.

Toyota forecasts record annual earnings for 2013

Toyota has announced it is expecting record annual earnings for 2013 as the weaker Japanese yen helps to boost sales abroad.

For the financial year ending March, it expects operating profit to reach 2.4 trillion Japanese yen ($23.7 billion).

The ongoing weakness in the yen also helped Toyota post better-than-expected earnings for the third quarter, with operating profit of 600 billion yen.

That is nearly five times higher than earnings in the same quarter one year ago.

Toyota said in a statement that its revised forecast is due to “progress in our recent profit improvement activities through cost reduction and marketing efforts, in addition to the change in our assumption of foreign exchange rates to reflect the depreciation of the yen.”

The Japanese currency has fallen by around 9% against the US dollar this year.

Toyota sold 9.98 million vehicles during 2013. That’s 270,000 more than its closest rival – US car giant General Motors.

Sales figures helped Toyota retain its position as the world’s largest carmaker by sales for two straight years.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death: Drugs and addiction treatment medication found in his apartment

New details about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s apparent drug overdose emerged Monday.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, was found dead in his New York City apartment just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday – with a hypodermic needle still in his arm.

According to law enforcement sources, authorities at the scene found roughly 50 bags of heroin, numerous syringes, addiction treatment medication, blood pressure medication, and a muscle relaxant.

Officials also discovered a few books about Truman Capote, the legendary author Philip Seymour Hoffman won an Academy Award for playing in the eponymous 2005 film.

Law enforcement officials also said that toxicology tests will likely determine Philip Seymour Hoffman’s cause of death.

A city police lab is testing unused heroin found in the actor’s apartment to determine potency.

It was too soon Monday to know if the heroin Philip Seymour Hoffman injected was tainted, if he mixed levels between two heroin “brands,” or if the actor took too much of the drug.

Authorities also found six bottles of prescription drugs – including the blood pressure medication clonidine hydrochloride; the addiction treatment drug buprenorphine; the attention-deficit disorder treatment drug vyvanse; the anti-anxiety drug hydroxyzine; and the muscle relaxer methocarbamol.

Three of the bottles had a prescription to Philip Seymour Hoffman on them, but the vyvanse, buprenorphine and hydroxyzine did not. It was not immediately clear if the latter three drugs were prescribed to Philip Seymour Hoffman but just not properly labeled.

Philip Seymour Hoffman had spoken openly about past substance abuse battles, saying he quit using drugs and alcohol and “got sober” at 22 years old.

However, in early 2013, Philip Seymour Hoffman checked himself into rehab for 10 days.

At the time, Philip Seymour Hoffman told TMZ that he had begun using prescription medicines, and his use escalated to heroin.

Russia urges Ukrainian opposition leaders to end campaign of ultimatums and threats

Russia has urged Ukraine’s opposition leaders to end their campaign of “ultimatums and threats” and to step up negotiations with the government.

Russia’s foreign ministry said Moscow was concerned by activists’ attempts to “inflame” the situation.

Protesters in Kiev have repeated their calls for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych, who is now back at work after four days of illness.

The EU and the US are considering a big loan to help debt-laden Ukraine.

“We are looking at how we could support the Ukraine in the times of the crisis when it comes to the economic and political situation,” a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Monday.

No further details of the plan have been revealed, but both EU and US officials said it would be conditional on Kiev embracing “real reform”.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso insisted that the EU was not going to enter into a “bidding competition” with Russia to win Ukraine’s loyalty.

Russia promised a $15 billion aid package to Ukraine last year, but has indicated the next tranche will not be given until a new government is formed, following the resignation of the prime minister and cabinet last week.

Jack Lew: US default could happen by the end of month

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has warned the US may default on its debt by the end of the month if Congress does not raise its borrowing limit.

Jack Lew said he could rely on emergency measures to pay US debts after the limit is reinstated on February 7.

But he anticipated the treasury’s reserves would quickly be exhausted as it issues annual income tax refunds.

Congress suspended the debt limit in October as part of a deal to reopen the federal government after a shutdown.

The $16.7 trillion cap will be reinstated on Friday.

“Without borrowing authority, at some point very soon, it would not be possible to meet all of the obligations of the federal government,” Jack Lew said at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington on Monday.

The treasury secretary said the US treasury department could resort to accounting mechanisms to avoid breaching the limit until the end of February.

But soon after, the US will only be able to pay its debt and other obligations with cash on hand.

And in the spring, Jack Lew noted, the US issues tax refunds to Americans who overpaid income taxes last year, straining its cash reserves.

While Republicans have in the past demanded budget cuts in return for agreeing an increase in the borrowing limit, the party’s leaders have signaled reluctance to do so this time around.

In any case, the White House has said it will not negotiate budget policy in exchange for raising the debt limit.

Jack Lew argued that dramatically cutting back on the federal government’s spending was unnecessary for the moment.

“I’m not sure this is the year for the long-term fiscal challenge to be dealt with,” he said, adding the US deficit had been declining.

“I actually believe that we’ve made so much progress in the short and medium term, we have a little time to deal with the longer term.”

During the partial government shutdown in October, Republican lawmakers threatened to block a rise in the debt limit unless the Democrats agreed to undermine or repeal President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare reform law.

London buses to become cashless

The iconic London’s buses are to become cashless from this summer, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

TfL predicts that, because of the Oyster card, the number of cash fares on buses will fall to less than 1% this year.

That compares with 20% of journeys being paid by cash 10 years ago.

TfL said it would introduce a “one more journey” feature that will allow passengers to make one more bus trip if there are insufficient funds on their Oyster card.

The decision comes following a public consultation last year in which 37,000 people responded.

When the idea was first proposed, there were concerns about the impact on vulnerable people and the lack of places in outer London to top up an Oyster card.

Last December, buses began to accept payment via contactless debit cards.

US hotels guests may have their credit and debit card data stolen

Independent security research Brian Krebs suggests that thousands of guests at US hotels may have had their credit and debit data stolen.

The cache of data seems to have gone astray from computers belonging to White Lodging Services said Brian Krebs.

The service company runs 168 franchised hotels in the US for the Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton and Westin chains.

White Lodging said it was currently conducting an investigation into how the data had been taken.

Brian Krebs said White Lodging’s role in the breach emerged as banking industry fraud investigators were looking into a sustained pattern of purchases made on faked cards in Marriott hotels. Oddly, said Brian Krebs in a blogpost, the fraudulent purchases were made only at Marriott hotels in six separate cities rather than across the entire chain.

Further investigation revealed that the common factor in all those hotels was they were run by Indiana-based White Lodging.

The fraudulent purchases were made at the gift shops, restaurants and other shops at the hotels and were not used to pay for rooms, said Brian Krebs.

In a statement issued to Brian Krebs, White Lodging said: “We will provide meaningful information as soon as it becomes available.”

In a separate statement, Marriott said it was “working closely” with its franchisee on the investigation.

The latest breach comes in the wake of other much larger attacks on US retailers that saw payment card details for millions of customers stolen.
