Francois Hollande honored at lavish White House state dinner

France’s President Francois Hollande has been honored at a lavish White House state dinner, the first since 2011.

At the party, Francois Hollande and President Barack Obama toasted the nations’ centuries-old friendship.

They have suggested the bad feelings over US spying and French opposition to the Iraq War have been soothed.

Among the guests at Tuesday’s state dinner were diplomats and dignitaries from both governments, as well as leaders in the media and business.

Hollywood luminaries in attendance included Bradley Cooper, Mindy Kaling, Stephen Colbert, Julie Louis-Dreyfus and director JJ Abrams.

The roughly 300 guests dined on caviar, quail eggs and rib-eye steak, later listening to a performance from singer Mary J. Blige.

After being welcomed to the White House by Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Francois Hollande was seated between the couple at the dinner table in a heated tent on the South Lawn.

The move was seen as a tactful way to handle the fact that Francois Hollande arrived alone after an ugly, widely publicized split from long-time partner Valerie Trierweiler following reports he had an affair with an actress.

The highlights of the evening were toasts given by the two presidents.

With a glass of white wine in his hand, Barack Obama opened by quoting French writer Alexis de Tocqueville’s impressions of 19th Century America, recalling to humorous effect his bafflement with American cuisine and his underwhelming impression of the White House.

“We Americans have grown to love all things French – the films, the food, the wine,” Barack Obama continued.

“But most of all, we love our French friends because we have stood together for our freedom for more than 200 years.

“Vive la France, God bless America, and long live the alliance between our great nations.”

Speaking first in English, Francois Hollande acknowledged the sacrifice of the US soldiers who fought in France during World War Two and said that France felt America’s pain at the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Continuing in French, Francois Hollande praised French-US diplomatic and military co-operation in the Middle East and Africa, and said the two countries would work jointly for economic growth and to combat climate change.

Francois Hollande said relations between the two countries had reached “an exceptional level of closeness and confidence” because they shared the “universal values” of freedom, democracy and respect for the law.

“We love Americans, although we don’t always say so and you love the French, but you are sometimes too shy to say so,” Francois Hollande said.

At a news conference after bilateral talks earlier on Tuesday, Francois Hollande said he and Barack Obama had resolved their issues over digital eavesdropping by the National Security Agency (NSA).

“Mutual trust has been restored,” he said.

Barack Obama also announced he had accepted Francois Hollande’s invitation to go to France in June to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy during World War Two.

Today, Francois Hollande will travel to San Francisco and meet chiefs of Silicon Valley giants including Facebook, Twitter and Google.

North Korea and South Korea hold first high-level talks since 2007

0

North Korea and South Korea are holding their first high-level talks since 2007.

The meeting – requested by Pyongyang – is taking place at the border village of Panmunjom.

No agenda has been set but the issue of family reunions planned for later this month is expected to be discussed.

Pyongyang has threatened to cancel the reunions because of the annual military exercises South Korea and the US are due to stage in February.

The morning session started at 10:00 local time and lasted for 90 minutes. Delegates then reconvened at South Korea’s side of Panmunjom in the afternoon, AFP news agency said.

South Korea’s Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Kyou-hyun is leading Seoul’s delegation at the Panmunjom talks.

Ahead of the meeting, Kim Kyou –hyun said: “This is an opportunity to open a new era of the Korean peninsula.

“I would like to attend the meeting with ‘open attitude and mind’ to study the opportunity.

“We will make an effort to proceed with the separated families reunion event as agreed.”

North Korea’s delegation has been headed by Won Tong-yon, a senior official specializing in inter-Korean ties, South Korean officials said.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga: El Salvador castaway arrives home after more than a year

El Salvador castaway Jose Salvador Alvarenga – who says he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific – has finally arrived home.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga, 37, was met by family members and officials after flying from the US.

The man was found washed up two weeks ago in the Marshall Islands. He says he left Mexico for a trip in a boat in December 2012 with a friend who died on board.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga apparently survived the 8,000 km (5,000-mile) ordeal by catching fish, birds and turtles with his bare hands.

For fluids, he claimed to have drunk urine, rainwater and the blood of birds.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga was rescued on January 30 by people living on the island of Ebon Atoll.

He was found dehydrated and suffering from back pain and swollen joints.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga landed at El Salvador’s international airport, near the capital San Salvador, at about 20:00 local time on Tuesday after flying from Los Angeles.

At the airport’s VIP lounge, Jose Salvador Alvarenga was met by El Salvador’s foreign minister and other government officials.

Dozens of journalists also gathered at the airport.

On his way from the Marshall Islands Jose Salvador Alvarenga had long stopovers in Hawaii and Los Angeles, where doctors had checked his health and ability to continue the trip.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga will now undergo further checks before a decision is taken whether he should stay overnight in a local hospital or can return to his coast fishing village of Garita Palmera.

Queen’s Greatest Hits becomes first album to pass 6 million sales in UK

Queen becomes the first act to sell six million copies of an individual album in the UK.

Their first Greatest Hits collection, which includes the hits We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody, has extended its lead after being Britain’s highest-selling album for several years.

The Official Charts Company said one in three British families now owned a copy of the 1981 compilation.

Queen guitarist Brian May said the feat was “incredible”.

“Great news, amazing news from the Official Charts Company,” he said.

“I just want to say thanks to everyone who has supported us through the years, we hope to continue to serve you.”

Band mate Roger Taylor added: “Wonderful. Who would have thought it? And all due to the great British public. Thank you. A great honor!”

Queen’s Greatest Hits leads the all-time album chart by some 900,000 copies, ahead of Abba’s 1992 greatest hits collection Gold.

However, Adele’s 21 is catching up on the top spot quickly. It has sold an impressive 4.7 million copies in just three years.

The Official Charts Company said Queen’s album – which also features Another One Bites The Dust, Bicycle Race and Fat Bottomed Girls – regularly sells several thousand copies per week, particularly around Christmas.

The majority of the sales have been on vinyl, CD and cassette – with only 124,000 downloads to date.

“Becoming the first album to pass six million sales is a quite incredible achievement by Queen,” said Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company.

Queen’s Greatest Hits is also their biggest-selling album in the US, where it is certified as having sold 8 million copies, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Top 5 UK album sales:

  1. Greatest Hits – Queen (1981) – 6 million
  2. Gold – Greatest Hits – Abba (1992) – 5.1 million
  3. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – Beatles (1967) – 5.1 million

US debt limit: House votes to increase borrowing limit

The House of Representatives has passed an increase in the US government’s debt limit, after the Republicans gave up on their attempt to win concessions from the Democrats in return.

The House voted 221-201 to waive the $17.2 trillion debt limit for just over a year, with only 28 Republicans joining most of the Democrats.

Officials had said the US could breach the debt limit by the end of February.

The White House and others had warned of calamity if the US defaulted.

The bill, when signed into law by President Barack Obama, will enable the US government to borrow money to fund its budget obligations and debt service.

The US government will run a budget deficit of about $514 billion in its 2014 fiscal year.

The House of Representatives has passed an increase in the US government's debt limit
The House of Representatives has passed an increase in the US government’s debt limit

The Republicans hold a majority in the House, and many had hoped to leverage their ability to block an increase in the government’s borrowing limit to win policy concessions from Barack Obama and the Democrats who control the Senate.

In the current and past debt limit fights, the Republican Party’s wish-list has included extensive budget cuts, measures that would repeal or undermine Barack Obama’s signature healthcare reform, a proposal to force the president to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada, a repeal of recent cuts to pensions for working-age military retirees, and more.

“He will not engage in our long-term spending problem,” Republican House Speaker John Boehner told reporters earlier on Tuesday.

“So let his party gives him the debt ceiling increase that he wants.”

As in the last major Washington DC budget brawl, in September and October, Barack Obama and the Democrats said they would refuse to negotiate over the borrowing limit, arguing raising the limit amounted to the US government making good on spending it had already undertaken.

They demanded a “clean” bill that would raise the debt ceiling without enacting additional policy measures.

The Republican House leadership, often at odds with its restive caucus, floated a plan on Monday that would tie the debt limit increase to restoring a cut in pensions for working-age military retirees that was enacted as a money-saving measure in a recent budget.

But they found they lacked the Republican votes to pass that, as conservative members balked.

A separate vote is planned on that issue. The Senate has already passed a bill to restore the cuts.

Spacing out at Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum

New York City has its fair share of big-name attractions, from the Statue of Liberty to Times Square, but any traveller attempting to ‘do’ NYC should put something else on their list: The Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum. Sitting on the Hudson River at Pier 86, not only does it contain some stunning artefacts and exhibits, but its location offers fantastic city views and a different perspective on US military history.

The history of the Museum

The museum was established in 1982 and provides visitors the opportunity to check out the 912 foot long aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in all its glory, the USS Growler and the retired Enterprise OV-101, the first Space Shuttle Orbiter. The USS Intrepid enjoyed a rich military history including being operational throughout World War II and the Vietnam War, before being used as a recovery vessel for NASA. On the flight deck you will get up close to lots of commercial and military aircraft from modern supersonic jets through to WWII fighters. It is also home to the A-12 Blackbord spy plane and the British Airways Concorde – two of the fastest planes ever built.

Main exhibits

The Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum has several main exhibit areas. Exploreum Hall is a 13,000 square foot fully interactive exhibition space in the hangar deck. These exhibits are designed around the themes of water, air, space and life at sea, so you can play space pinball, climb inside a Bell 47 helicopter or into a lifeboat. Visitors can also access hidden areas of the ship, including the anchor chain room, the machine shop and the crews cramped sleeping quarters – imagining what it would be like to sleep there for weeks on end!

The USS Growler is a diesel powered submarine that dates back to 1958. it is one of the few publically accessible submarines that ever fired a nuclear weapon. Visitors can get to see its once top secret missile command center.

The OV 101 space shuttle was unveiled in 1976. Used as a test shuttle because it was incapable of space flight it was originally to be called Constitution until the president at the time Gerald Ford intervened and expressed a wish that it be called Enterprise – after his favourite show Star Trek. Enterprise was duly launched used until 1979, paving the way for many other shuttle missions into space.

If you wish to feel the force of the US military and not just witness it, then there’s a choice of two simulators included in the $42 dollar ticket. Choose from the GForce Encounter, which recreates the sensation of flying in a supersonic jet plane, or the Transporter FX flight simulator – akin to flying a fighter jet.

Practical information and tickets

If you’re an adult, a $24 ticket ($19 if you’re aged between 7-17) grants you access to the USS Intrepid, the USS Growler submarine and the ‘Story of Intrepid’ movie. For $31 ($24 if you’re 7-17), you can check out the Space Shuttle Pavilion too. $42 for adults ($35 if you’re 7-17) grants you admission to all three plus a simulator ride and an audio tour. There’s also a range of yearly membership offers, for example a student membership with unlimited visits is just $40. In addition, a range of discount vouchers can be found online if you book in advance, so it’s worth searching around for best prices before paying on the day.

Samuel L. Jackson mistaken for Laurence Fishburne on live TV

Samuel L. Jackson has admonished KTLA reporter Sam Rubin who mistook him for fellow movie star Laurence Fishburne.

Sam Rubin began an interview with Samuel L. Jackson by asking about his recent Super Bowl commercial.

The reporter was referring to an advert for the new Kia sedan – in which Laurence Fishburne reprised his role from The Matrix.

“We don’t all look alike! We may all be black and famous but we don’t all look alike,” said Samuel L. Jackson.

“There’s more than one black guy doing a commercial.”

The actor continued: “I’m the <<What’s in your wallet?>> black guy. He’s the car black guy.

“Morgan Freeman is the other credit card black guy. You only hear his voice, though, so you probably won’t confuse him with Laurence Fishburne.”

Samuel L. Jackson was appearing live from Atlanta.

Sam Rubin, from his studio in Hollywood, apologized on numerous occasions and tried to steer Samuel L. Jackson onto a discussion about the revival of Robocop – the original reason for the interview.

“Let’s talk about Robocop,” he said.

“Oh hell, no,” replied Samuel L. Jackson.

“There must be a very short line for your job,” he continued.

The actor continued to rib Sam Rubin for his mistake, asking if he would have trouble telling apart his co-stars Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton.

“You do know who they all are though, right? Just in case they have some of them on the show. Do some work. Do some research. Make sure you don’t confuse them with those other white actors,” he said.

Veteran Entertainment correspondent Sam Rubin, who has won numerous awards during his career, said on-air after his gaffe that “more often than not I really do know what I’m talking about”.

“But I didn’t 30 minutes ago and I’m really embarrassed about it, and I very much apologize to Samuel L. Jackson and anyone else who was offended for what was a very amateur mistake.”

President Barack Obama has welcomed France’s President Francois Hollande to the White House for a day of meetings culminating in a state dinner.

Francois Hollande was greeted by a military honor guard and blaring brass band on the south lawn.

Barack Obama and Francois Hollande are expected to discuss issues ranging from trade to Iran’s nuclear program.

The visit sets the seal on a new era in US-French relations, which sank to a low a decade ago over the Iraq war.

“More nations must step up and meet the responsibilities of leadership, and that’s what the United States and France are doing together,” Barack Obama said with Francois Hollande by his side at the White House.

Francois Hollande highlighted the historic ties between the two nations, saying: “Each of our countries knows what it owes to each other – its freedom.”

North Korea and South Korea to hold rare high-level talks

North Korea and South Korea are to hold rare high-level talks on Wednesday, Seoul has announced, ahead of family reunions planned for later this month.

The meeting will take place at the border village of Panmunjom, a South Korea’s Unification Ministry spokesman said.

No agenda had been set but the planned family reunions were expected to be discussed, he said.

The agreement followed a proposal from North Korea to hold talks.

North Korea and South Korea are to hold rare high-level talks ahead of family reunions

There is hope in Seoul that it might kick-start a regular dialogue, our correspondent adds.

North Korea and South Korea are due to hold reunions of families divided by the partitioning of the Korean Peninsula at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, for five days from February 20.

The last such reunions took place in 2010. But these reunions coincide with the start of US-South Korea joint military drills – annual exercises which anger North Korea.

In a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday, North Korea’s ambassador to the UN, So Se Pyong, spoke of the need to terminate all hostile military actions which he described as the main obstacles to peace.

Taiwan and China hold historic talks in Nanjing

Taiwan and China have begun the highest-level talks since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

Wang Yu-chi and Zhang Zhijun, the top cross-strait officials from each side, are both attending the four-day talks in Nanjing.

No official agenda has been released for the talks, which are widely seen as a confidence-building exercise.

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory. In the past, all talks have gone via quasi-official organizations.

Zhang Zhijun, head of mainland China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said: “It’s impossible to imagine in the past that we could sit here and meet [today].”

“We must have some imagination if [we want to] resolve some difficulties, not just for such a meeting, we should also have a bigger imagination for cross-strait future development,” he added.

Wang Yu-chi, head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, described the meeting as “a new chapter for cross-strait relations”.

“For us to simply sit at the same table, sit down to discuss issues, is already not an easy thing.”

Taiwan and China have begun the highest-level talks since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949
Taiwan and China have begun the highest-level talks since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949

Given the sensitivities, the meeting room had no flags on display, and the officials’ nameplates had no titles or affiliations, AFP news agency reported.

Beijing insists that Taiwan is part of China and has a stated aim of reclaiming the island.

Taiwan still calls itself the Republic of China and nominally claims the same territory as the Communist government in Beijing, although it does not press these claims.

The US is committed to defending Taipei, despite not formally recognizing Taiwan as an independent country.

The situation has created a decades-long military stand-off between Beijing and Washington.

But cross-strait ties have improved since Taiwan’s pro-Beijing President Ma Ying-jeou was elected in 2008.

Cross-strait flights began in 2008, and tourists from the mainland have boosted Taiwan’s economy.

Trade agreements have allowed Taiwanese technology firms to expand massively, investing billions of dollars in the mainland.

However, Ma Ying-jeou is unpopular and analysts say his governing Kuomintang party is likely to lose local elections later this year.

The talks are the first formal government-to-government dialogue since the 1949 split.

Taiwan negotiators are likely to propose the posting of permanent representatives on each other’s territories.

But they will also face pressure to talk about press freedom after China refused accreditation to several media outlets.

Many Taiwanese are sensitive to issues of press freedom, having lived under a dictatorship that tightly controlled the media until the 1980s.

Bitcoin: Russia tightens up regulations surrounding use of virtual currencies

In an apparent clampdown on the use of Bitcoin in Russia, the Russian prosecutor general’s office said it was tightening up regulations surrounding the use of virtual currencies as they could be used for money laundering or financing terrorism.

The Russian prosecutor general’s office said that the rouble was the only official currency in Russia and introducing others was illegal.

“Systems for anonymous payments and cyber-currencies that have gained considerable circulation – including the most well-known, Bitcoin – are money substitutes and cannot be used by individuals or legal entities,” it said in a statement to Reuters.

The use of Bitcoin for alleged money laundering led to the arrests of two men in the US last week.

The Russian prosecutor general’s office said that the rouble was the only official currency in Russia and introducing others was illegal

The Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle told Bloomberg in a statement that the “arrests may be the first state prosecutions involving the use of Bitcoins in money laundering operations”.

“Bitcoins are neither good nor bad. Buying bitcoins allows money to be anonymously moved around the world with a click of a computer mouse. Improperly used, Bitcoins are often seen as a perfect means of laundering dirty money or for buying and selling illegal goods, such as drugs or stolen credit card information,” she added.

Federal charges have already been brought against the operators of two exchanges for money laundering in the US.

Bitcoin value plummets as MtGox tech issue continues

The value of Bitcoin has dropped sharply after MtGox – one of the largest trading exchanges – said there was a flaw in the virtual currency’s underlying software.

MtGox said it had halted transfers to external Bitcoin addresses on Friday after detecting “unusual activity”.

It said an investigation had revealed it was possible for thieves to fool the transaction process so that double the correct amount of bitcoins would be sent.

Bitcoins fell from $700 to $540.

The Tokyo-based firm said it was now working with the Bitcoin core development team to “mitigate this issue”, which it said was not limited to its own Bitcoin-wallet system.

The value of Bitcoin has dropped sharply after MtGox said there was a flaw in the virtual currency’s underlying software

A Bitcoin wallet is the place where Bitcoin addresses – the virtual post-boxes where each bitcoin is stored -are kept.

It added that cash withdrawals and transfers of bitcoins to – rather than from – Bitcoin Wallets were unaffected.

MtGox said in a statement: “A bug in the bitcoin software makes it possible for someone to use the Bitcoin network to alter transaction details to make it seem like a sending of bitcoins to a Bitcoin wallet did not occur when in fact it did occur.

“Since the transaction appears as if it has not proceeded correctly, the bitcoins may be resent.”

Gavin Andresen, chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation – which oversees and develops the Bitcoin software – denied the problem was its fault.

US bobsledder Johnny Quinn got stuck in a lift barely 48 hours after becoming trapped in his bathroom at the Olympic athletes’ village in Sochi.

Johnny Quinn tweeted a photo of himself trying to pry open the lift door, saying: “No one is going to believe this but we got stuck in an elevator.”

A US team spokesperson confirmed he eventually managed to get out.

Johnny Quinn made international headlines on the weekend when he was forced to smash through a jammed bathroom door.

The brakeman discovered he was unable to open the door after taking a shower on the opening day of the Winter Games.

“With no phone to call for help, I used my bobsled push training to break out,” Johnny Quinn tweeted.

Johnny Quinn spent Monday morning talking to journalists to explain how he had managed to burst through the bathroom door.

A few hours later, he then became stuck with two teammates in a lift before dinner.

It is not yet clear how they were able to escape.

The Sochi Games have had various problems with the provision and build quality of accommodation for athletes and journalists attending the Olympics.

Reporters arriving in Sochi over recent weeks have documented unusual “twin” toilet installations, unfinished hotels and problems with water and electricity supply.

Nathan Fielder revealed as Dumb Starbucks owner

Nathan Fielder has been revealed as the owner of parody coffee shop “Dumb Starbucks” in Los Angeles.

Nathan Fielder appeared in person at the store to make the announcement, where he said there are plans to open a second outlet in Brooklyn, New York.

There had been widespread speculation that the store, which uses Starbuck’s trademarks, was a publicity stunt.

Starbucks said they were aware of the store but denied any affiliation.

“We are evaluating next steps and while we appreciate the humor, they cannot use our name, which is a protected trademark,” a Starbucks spokesperson said in a statement.

“Dumb Starbucks” opened in a shopping centre on Friday and started giving away free drinks, generating long queues of people.

The decoration of the “Dumb Starbucks” is very similar to that of a real Starbucks.

The store front has the same green awning and round mermaid logo as Starbucks’ coffee shops – except the work “Dumb” is placed in large letters above the word Starbucks.

The wall menu inside the pop-up store offered coffee that ranged from “horrible” to “bitter”, as well as products called “dumb iced coffee” and “dumb white chocolate mocha.”

The drinks were served in a white paper cup with a sticker of the Starbucks logo with the word “dumb” added to it.

None of the patrons were charged for their drinks, although there was a tip jar.

The “Dumb Starbucks” coffee shop has also set up its own Facebook page and Twitter handle, which has accumulated more than 8,000 followers.

On the micro-blogging website, it tweeted that “the owner of Dumb Starbucks will be making an in person announcement at our store (1802 Hillhurst Ave) today at 4pm. All are welcome!”.

At the designated time, a YouTube video was posted on the “Dumb Starbucks” Twitter account, revealing Nathan Fielder as the owner.

Nathan Fielder is best known for his work on network Comedy Central and for encouraging fans to pull pranks.

While many have dismissed the store as a publicity stunt, experts say the people behind the “Dumb Starbucks” could potentially face legal action over copyright infringement.

However, in the “Dumb Starbucks” store, the owners posted a statement at the counter stating that the store is protected by “parody law”.

“By adding the word <<dumb>>, we are technically <<making fun>> of Starbucks, which allows us to use their trademarks under a law known as <<fair use>>,” the statement said.

“In the eyes of the law, our <<coffee shop>> is actually an art gallery and the <<coffee>> you’re buying is considered art. But that’s for our lawyers to worry about.”

India Olympics suspension lifted after IOA fresh elections

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to lift the ban on India’s Olympic Association (IOA), allowing the country to return to the Olympic fold, officials say.

The IOC suspended India for electing officials accused of corruption in 2012, in breach of the Olympic charter.

But on Sunday the IOA conducted fresh elections which were seen as fair.

Indian athletes have been competing at the Sochi Winter Games under the IOC flag but can now do so under their own.

“The decision means Indian athletes can compete for their national Olympic committee. They can walk behind their national flag at the closing ceremony,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

“The Indian flag will be raised in the [Sochi Winter Games] village, at a time to be announced,” Mark Adams added.

Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton relationship: Hillary Clinton’s letters to Diane Blair

0

Explosive secret documents have revealed that Hillary Clinton claimed that President Bill Clinton didn’t have a relationship of “any real meaning” with Monica Lewinsky and the former White House intern was a “narcissistic loony toon”.

Hillary Clinton made the frank remarks to her best friend in 1998 as the American public reeled from Monica Lewinsky’s claims of nine meetings with the president in the Oval Office.

Days after the news of the affair broke, Hillary Clinton stood stone-faced beside the president as he vehemently denied any such liaisons took place at a press conference.

Hillary Clinton later wrote in her autobiography that in reality she felt “dumbfounded, heartbroken and outraged” at finding out her husband had lied to her and the public – an act that ultimately led to his impeachment in later that year.

The documents can now be revealed that Hillary Clinton told best friend Diane Blair that Bill Clinton was driven to infidelity in part by his political adversaries, the loneliness of the presidency, and her own failures as a wife.

The revelations come in a collection of letters and notes by adviser Diane Blair, a political science professor Hillary Clinton described as her “closest friend” before Blair’s death in 2000.

The letters have only come to light today after the Washington Free Beacon published them.

The archive includes correspondence, diaries, interviews, strategy memos, and contemporaneous accounts of conversations with the Clintons ranging from the mid-1970s to the turn of the millennium.
