Chelsea Clinton quits NBC reporter job over imminent birth of her first child

Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton announced on August 29 that she is quitting her job as a reporter at NBC News, citing increased work at the Clinton Foundation and imminent birth of her first child.

Chelsea Clinton had been working at NBC since 2011, sporadically doing feature stories on people or organizations doing public-spirited work.

Politico magazine reported earlier this year that NBC was paying her $600,000 a year.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Chelsea Clinton said: “I loved watching the <<Making a Difference>> stories about remarkable people and organizations making a profound difference in our country and our world. I am grateful NBC gave me the opportunity to continue this important legacy.”

Chelsea Clinton, 34, was initially hired to do stories for Brian WilliamsRock Center newsmagazine, but that program was canceled. Her work occasionally appeared on NBC’s Nightly News.

Two Chelsea Clinton stories that aired in January were on education programs targeting the underprivileged. She’s done stories on a school program for jailed teenagers named after Maya Angelou, an Arkansas tutoring program and a restaurant chain that donates leftover food to the needy. Her story on actor Jeff Bridges‘ work on childhood hunger aired August1, and another story about a school lunch program for poor children in New Mexico is scheduled to air on August 31.

Chelsea Clinton’s exit removes some potential awkwardness for the network if Hillary Clinton runs for president in 2016. NBC made certain to keep Chelsea Clinton off the air around the time her mother was making media appearances to promote a book, to avoid any appearance of conflict. NBC also received some criticism when stories about her salary appeared

Both NBC and Chelsea Clinton left open the possibility that she could someday return to the network.

“While my role with NBC News may be coming to an end, I look forward to working with the NBC family well into the future,” Chelsea Clinton said on Facebook.

Chelsea Clinton and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, announced this spring that she is pregnant with her first child.

Ukraine: NATO membership considered as conflict is slipping out of control

Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank Steinmeier has warned that the crisis in eastern Ukraine is “slipping out of control” and needs to be reined in to avoid a military clash with Russia.

Frank Steinmeier made the remarks on the eve of an EU summit which will consider further sanctions against the Russian government.

Russia has denied claims by NATO that its forces illegally crossed into Ukraine to support separatists there.

Some 2,600 people have died in fighting between rebels and Ukrainian troops.

The conflict erupted in April when Russia’s annexation of Crimea prompted rebels to take control of large parts of the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed Ukraine for the crisis, comparing its siege of Donetsk and Luhansk to the siege of Leningrad by Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Russia could face new restrictions after a summit of the European Union’s 28 heads of state in Brussels on Saturday.

The EU and the US have already imposed sanctions against dozens of senior Russian officials, separatist commanders and Russian firms accused of undermining Ukrainian sovereignty.

In late July, the EU also blacklisted some key economic sectors, prompting Russia to retaliate by banning food imports.

Russia’s energy minister has warned that the Ukrainian crisis could lead to a disruption of gas supplies to European countries this winter.

Earlier on Friday, NATO held an emergency meeting after releasing satellite images it said showed columns of Russian armed forces inside Ukrainian territory.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on Russia to “take immediate and verifiable steps towards de-escalation”.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen also indicated NATO could consider Ukraine’s application to join the alliance, shortly after PM Arseny Yatsenyuk announced he was putting Ukraine on course for NATO membership.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting has continued near the strategic port of Mariupol on the Azov Sea. Rebel forces are trying to capture the city but Ukrainian government troops are digging in.

On August 28, the separatists seized the nearby town of Novoazovsk.

The separatists’ advance toward Mariupol has raised fears that the Kremlin might seek to create a land corridor between Russia and Crimea.

Rebels are also reported to have surrounded government soldiers in several places further north, near Donetsk city.

MSN Messenger closing down on October 31 after 15 years

Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger, originally known as MSN Messenger, will be switched off in China in October, marking a final end to the 15-year-old service.

MSN Messenger was launched in 1999 but was switched off for most users in 2013, after Microsoft bought rival Skype.

Users in China continued to use the old service but will now be transferred to Skype by October 31.

Windows Live still had as many as 330 million users as recently as 2009.

However, those numbers later declined, while users of Skype rose to nearly 300 million by 2012.

The service came to China in 2005, but later faced stiff competition from domestic rivals such as QQ messenger, built by Chinese firm Tencent.

A number of Chinese Windows Live users received emails from Microsoft on Thursday, Chinese newspapers reported, informing them of the planned closure.

The emails told users they would get free Skype credit when they migrated over to the new service, the newspaper said.

MSN Messenger began as a simple text chat service in 1999, a rival to AOL’s AIM service and ICQ.

It later added features such as photo delivery, video calls and games as the technology developed.

Microsoft’s purchase of Skype for $8.5 billion in 2012 spelled the beginning of the end for the service.

ZMapp: Ebola experimental drug is 100% effective in monkey studies

The experimental Ebola drug ZMapp shows it is 100% effective in monkey studies, even in later stages of the infection, the only clinical trial data showed.

The study’s findings have been published in Nature.

Yet the limited supplies will not help the 20,000 people predicted to be infected during the outbreak in West Africa.

Two out of seven people given the drug, have later died from the disease.

ZMapp has been dubbed the “secret serum” as it is still in the experimental stages of drug development with, until now, no public data on effectiveness.

Doctors have turned to it as there is no cure for Ebola, which has killed more than 1,500 people since it started in Guinea.

Researchers have been investigating different combinations of antibodies, a part of the immune system which binds to viruses, as a therapy.

ZMapp shows it is 100 percent effective in monkey studies, even in later stages of the Ebola infection
ZMapp shows it is 100 percent effective in monkey studies, even in later stages of the Ebola infection

Previous combinations have shown some effectiveness in animal studies. ZMapp is the latest cocktail and contains three antibodies.

Trials on 18 rhesus macaques infected with Ebola showed 100% survival.

This included animals given the drug up to five days after infection. For the monkeys this would be a relatively late stage in the infection, around three days before it becomes fatal.

Scientists say this is significant as previous therapies needed to be given before symptoms even appeared.

One of the researchers, Dr. Gary Kobinger from the Public Health Agency of Canada, said this was a huge step up from previous antibody combinations.

“The level of improvement was beyond my own expectation, I was quite surprised that the best combination would rescue animals as far as day five, it was fantastic news.

“What was very exceptional is that we could rescue some of the animals that had advanced disease.”

However, there is always caution when interpreting the implications for humans from animal data.

A Liberian doctor, one of three taking the drug in the country, and a Spanish priest both died from the infection despite ZMapp treatment.

The course of the infection is slower in humans than macaques so it has been cautiously estimated that ZMapp may be effective as late as day nine or 11 after infection.

But Dr. Gary Kobinger said: “We know there is a point of no return where there is too much damage to major organs, so there’s a limit.”

The group wants to start clinical trials in people to truly assess the effectiveness of the drug.

Beyonce avoids speaking about Jay-Z as she covers CR Fashion Book

Beyonce has covered the latest issue of CR Fashion Book and has talked about her daughter Blue Ivy calling her “my biggest muse” in the accompanying interview.

“It’s my daughter, she’s my biggest muse,” Beyonce says of Blue Ivy.

“There’s someone, we all find out soon, more important than ourselves to lose. I feel a deep bond with young children – all those photos in my dressing room – especially those who’ve been stricken. Children I’ve met across the years – they uplift me like pieces of moon and guide me, whispering in my ear.”

While she doesn’t directly address her husband Jay-Z, Beyonce goes on to reflect on herself, her spirituality, and her stage persona.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt wedding: Jon Voight was not invited

Jon Voight has revealed he found out about daughter Angelina Jolie’s surprise wedding to Brad Pitt when the rest of the world did.

CBS’ Inside Edition asked Jon Voight, 75, about the wedding on August 28 at around 7:30 a.m. PT, several hours after the couple’s spokesperson confirmed to the Associated Press that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married in France, on August 23.

Jon Voight responded by saying he did not know they got married.

Asked whether he had a comment, Jon Voight quipped: “That’s nice.”

Jon Voight was all weekend attending pre-Emmys and Emmys events for his work on his Showtime series, Ray Donovan.

However, the wedding ceremony was attended by Brad Pitt’s entire immediate family.

The actor’s contentious relationship with Angelina Jolie, 39, his daughter with the late Marcheline Bertrand, has been well chronicled in the past.

Angelina Jolie and her father reconciled in early 2010 after years of estrangement. In June, Jon Voight praised his granddaughter Vivienne’s acting debut in Angelina Jolie’s blockbuster hit Maleficent.

“Magnificent. She’s wonderful,” Jon Voight told Us Weekly of the 6-year-old’s big-screen debut as young Princess Aurora.

Jon Voight added that Vivienne’s appearance reminded him of when Angelina Jolie first made her debut alongside him in 1982 comedy, Lookin’ to Get Out.

This is not the first time Angelina Jolie kept a top-secret plan from her father.

Angelina Jolie, who underwent a preventative double mastectomy in early 2013, similarly kept her father out of the loop. Jon Voight, like millions of readers, found out about his daughter’s procedure after she penned an op-ed for the New York Times about her bold medical decision.

Malaysia Airlines to cut 6,000 jobs in overhaul

Malaysia Airlines has announced it will cut 6,000 jobs as part of a radical restructuring plan after being hit by two disasters in 2014.

The reduction in staff numbers represents around 30% of its workforce of 20,000.

Malaysia Airlines will become completely state owned, and a new chief executive will eventually be put in place.

Investigators continue to hunt for flight MH370, the Kuala Lumpur to Beijing flight which went missing in March.

The MH17 air crash in eastern Ukraine is also under investigation. The plane was shot down on July 17, with the loss of all 298 people on board.

The recovery plan will cost about 6 billion Malaysian ringgit ($1.9 billion).

Khazanah Nasional, the state investment company that owns a 69% stake in Malaysia Airlines, will take 100% ownership.

“The combination of measures announced today will enable our national airline to be revived,” said Khazanah’s managing director Azman Mokhtar.

“Success is by no means guaranteed – while it is imperative that MAS [Malaysia Airlines] as a critical enabler in national development is revived, public accountability for the use of the funds mean that it cannot be renewed at any cost,” he added.

Long-haul routes will be slashed, and the airline aims to return to profitability by 2018.

Malaysia Airlines warned on Thursday that it had seen a sharp decline in weekly bookings following the two air disasters.

However, the company has been in trouble over the past few years, and has lost billions of ringgit in that time.

Malaysia Airlines will be completely delisted from the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange by the end of 2014.

Relevant assets, operations and liabilities of Malaysia Airlines will be transferred to a new company by July 1, 2015.

The current chief executive, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, will continue to lead Malaysia Airlines until the new company is formed next year.

Libya’s PM Abdullah al-Thani steps down

Libya’s PM Abdullah al-Thani has resigned in a move to end the power struggle in the country.

Abdullah al-Thani’s cabinet said it was resigning to enable the elected parliament to choose a new, inclusive government.

The Islamist-linked militia which seized the capital, Tripoli, last week has called for the elected parliament to be replaced by the previous body, the General National Congress (GNC).

Libya has been hit by instability since the 2011 ousting of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

The various armed groups which united against Libya’s long-time leader have refused to disarm, leaving the government unable to exert control.

French President Francois Hollande on Thursday called for the UN to give “exceptional support” to Libya to prevent the country sliding further into chaos.

Following the call by the Misrata-led militia for the GNC to reform, some members gathered this week in Tripoli and said they had appointed a new prime minister.

The UN this week stressed that it only recognized the elected body, the House of Representatives, which is dominated by liberal and federalist lawmakers.

The GNC had an Islamist majority.

Because of the instability in Tripoli, and the second city Benghazi, the House of Representatives has been meeting in the far eastern town of Tobruk.

Abdullah al-Thani, 60, served as Libya’s prime minister since March 2014, when he took over in an interim capacity after Congress dismissed Ali Zeidan. He was previously the defense minister in the government of Ali Zeidan.

NATO holds crisis meeting over eastern Ukraine war

NATO is holding an emergency meeting over eastern Ukraine crisis, as the West steps up its accusations of direct Russian involvement in the conflict.

On August 28, NATO released satellite images it said showed Russian forces inside Ukraine and said more than 1,000 troops were operating there.

Russia denies sending troops to eastern Ukraine.

Pro-Russian rebels have gained ground recently. Nearly 2,600 people have been killed since April, the UN says.

Heavy fighting is continuing near the strategic port of Mariupol, on the Azov Sea. Rebel forces are trying to capture the city but Ukrainian government troops are digging in.

On August 28, the separatists seized the nearby town of Novoazovsk.

The advance has raised fears that the Kremlin might seek to create a land corridor between Russia and Crimea – a territory annexed by Russia from Ukraine in March.

Rebels are also reported to have surrounded government soldiers in several places further north, near the city of Donetsk.

Ukraine forces near the town of Ilovaysk say they are cut off and have been urgently asking for supplies and reinforcements.

NATO said that more than 1,000 Russian troops were operating inside Ukraine
NATO said that more than 1,000 Russian troops were operating inside Ukraine

Overnight, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the rebels to open a “humanitarian corridor” to allow encircled Ukrainian troops to leave without unnecessary casualties, though he did not specify the location.

Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko later told Russian TV that his fighters had agreed to the request, on condition that the Ukrainians hand over heavy weapons and ammunition.

At least 2,593 people had been killed in the conflict between mid-April and August 27, the UN said in its latest report.

Human rights violations like abduction and torture were “committed primarily by the armed groups”, referring to the rebels, it said.

Separately, Human Rights Watch said in a report that the rebels were subjecting civilians to torture, degrading treatment and forced labor.

The reports of Russian troops fighting with rebels prompted renewed Western criticism of Moscow’s role in the conflict.

President Barack Obama blamed Russia for the escalation but stopped short of saying its troops had invaded Ukraine.

“There is no doubt that this is not a home-grown, indigenous uprising in eastern Ukraine,” he said.

“The separatists are trained by Russia, they are armed by Russia, they are funded by Russia.”

Barack Obama is due to discuss the crisis with European leaders at a NATO summit in the UK next week.

NATO released satellite images it said showed columns of Russian armed forces inside Ukrainian territory.

NATO Brigadier General Niko Tak said more than 1,000 Russian troops were operating inside Ukraine, both supporting the separatists and fighting on their side.

At Thursday’s emergency session of the UN Security Council, US Ambassador Samantha Power said Russia had “outright lied” about its role.

Her Russian counterpart Vitaly Churkin did not respond directly to Western accusations, but said: “There are Russian volunteers in eastern parts of Ukraine. No-one is hiding that.”

He hit out at the Ukrainian government, accusing it of “waging war against its own people”.

Vitaly Churkin also questioned the presence of Western advisers in Ukraine and asked where Ukrainian troops were getting their weapons from.

North Korea cancels sending cheerleaders to Incheon Asian Games 2014

North Korea has decided to stop sending cheerleaders to South Korea for Asian Games 2014, which would have been the first such trip in almost 10 years.

Pyongyang had said a group would accompany athletes taking part in the 16th Asian Athletics Championships in September in the South Korean city of Incheon.

However, it changed its mind because South Korea had appeared to be “displeased”.

North Korea accused the South of quibbling over details, and of viewing the group as a political propaganda tool.

“The South side took issue with the scale of the cheerleading squad and the size of the flag of the DPRK [North Korea],” a statement carried by KCNA news agency said.

North Korea has decided to stop sending cheerleaders to South Korea for Asian Games 2014
North Korea has decided to stop sending cheerleaders to South Korea for Asian Games 2014

The statement said the South “finally raised even the issue of expenses which the North side had never mentioned, bringing the talks to a rupture”.

South Korea said it was disappointed at the “unilateral” move and said it hoped Pyongyang would change its mind.

The squad of dozens of young women performing synchronized moves traditionally attracts attention in South Korea.

Cheerleaders last came in 2005 for the Asian Athletics Championships, also held in Incheon.

That contingent was made up of 101 cheerleaders, including – reports say – Ri Sol-ju who went on to marry North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un.

Tension remains high between the two Koreas, which remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Pyongyang is widely believed to be pursuing nuclear weapons’ development and has carried out three nuclear tests, most recently in 2013.

North Korea traditionally alternates threats and olive branches towards its southern neighbor.

Uzi shooting: No charges for 9-year-old girl in Charles Vacca’s accidental death

0

There will be no charges after the incident in which a 9-year-old girl fatally shot gun instructor Charles Vacca, officials say.

The death of Charles Vacca was “being viewed as an industrial accident,” Mohave County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Charles Vacca, 39, was giving the girl a lesson at an Arizona shooting range when the recoil from a firearm caused her to lose control of the Uzi submachine gun.

He died after being airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas.

The girl was at the shooting range with her parents, who filmed the lesson.

The footage shows Charles Vacca coaching the girl as she fires a single shot at a target at the Last Stop shooting range in White Hills, Arizona.

The Uzi then appears to be switched to automatic as the girl pulls the trigger and loses her grip of the weapon.

The video, edited and released by the Mojave County Sheriff’s office, ends abruptly before the instructor is shot.

The unnamed girl and her family were on a visit to Arizona from New Jersey.

A spokeswoman for the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health confirmed that the agency was also investigating the shooting, but would give no further details.

The website of the shooting range, called Bullets and Burgers, says children aged 8 and older can shoot a weapon if they are accompanied by a parent and an instructor.

Range operator Sam Scarmardo told the Associated Press news agency the facility had not had an accident in the 12 years it has been open.

“We really don’t know what happened. Our guys are trained to basically hover over people when they’re shooting,” Sam Scarmardo told a local broadcaster.

“If they’re shooting right-handed, we have our right-hand behind them ready to push the weapon out of the way. And if they’re left-handed, the same thing.”

A similar incident in 2008 killed an 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head during a gun expo in Massachusetts.

Bardarbunga volcano eruption: Iceland raises aviation warning level to red

Iceland has raised its aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano to red after an eruption began overnight.

Scientists said a fissure eruption 0.6 miles long started in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier.

Civil protection officials said Icelandic Air Traffic Control had closed the airspace above the eruption up to a height of 5,000ft.

The volcano has been hit by several recent tremors.

The fissure eruption took place between Dyngjujokull Glacier and the Askja caldera, a statement from the Department of Civil Protection said.

Iceland has raised its aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano to red after an eruption began overnight

The area is part of the Bardabunga system.

“Scientists who have been at work close to the eruption monitor the event at a safe distance,” the statement added.

“The Icelandic Met Office has raised the aviation colour code over the eruption site to red.”

It added that no volcanic ash had so far been detected but a coast guard aircraft was due to take off later to survey the site.

Until now the Icelandic Met Office has kept its aviation warning level – indicating the potential threat of volcanic activity to air travel – at orange, its second-highest.

On August, scientists said they were examining several “cauldrons” found near Bardarbunga volcano that could potentially be a sign of an eruption.

The cauldrons, depressions in the volcano’s surface, each between 49 ft deep and 0.6 miles wide, were seen during a flight on August 27.

Bardarbunga is part of a large volcano system hidden beneath the 1,600ft-thick Vatnajokull ice cap in central Iceland.

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing ash that disrupted air travel across Europe.

Britney Spears breaks up with David Lucado after video shows him cheating on her

Britney Spears and David Lucado have split up after 18 months of dating, Us Weekly reported.

The news comes just months after the couple battled breakup rumors.

Britney Spears took to Twitter herself on August 27 and shared the news with world, tweeting: “Ahhhh the single life!”

The singer told Entertainment Tonight during happier times last year: “I’m in love. I like the fact that he’s very stubborn and he’s stuck in his ways. He’s just a simple man. I adore him.”

Britney Spears, the mom to Sean, 8, and Jayden, 7, first stepped out with David Lucado in March 2013, shortly after calling off her engagement to Jason Trawick.

She was previously married to Kevin Federline.

Britney Spears has stayed mum as to the reason for the breakup, but a source tells E! News that she called it quits because of an alleged video that shows David Lucado cheating on her.

Apparently, the video shows David Lucado making out with another woman and dancing with her in what appears to be someone’s living room.

Allegedly, the video was taken in early August when Britney Spears and David Lucado were very much together.

According to E! News, Prince Harry “sees Camilla as much more than a fling”.

“This was supposed to be Harry’s last summer of fun before he turned 30 and got serious and settled down,” a source said.

“It’s a great sign it shows how mature he is now and that he realizes when he finds happiness to not let go of it and to nurture it.”

“Harry loves how she’s devoted her life to charity – she’s fully committed to helping other people and he sees a lot of his mother Diana’s goodness in her.”

Chrystie Crownover is Bruce Jenner’s first wife and mother of Burt and Casey

Chrystie Crownover is Bruce Jenner’s first wife with whom he had two children, son Burt and daughter Cassandra.

Bruce Jenner and Chrystie Crownover were married from 1972 until their divorce in 1981.

Chrystie Scott, who took the surname Crownover after divorcing Bruce Jenner, was happily married to Bruce for eight years between 1971 and 1979.

Chrystie Crownover, now 63, and Bruce Jenner, now 64, had two children together, Burt, now 36, and Cassandra “Casey”, 34. Chrystie Crownover has always stuck up for her ex even though he left her while she was pregnant with Casey for model Linda Thompson, whom he eventually married.

She told People Magazine years later that there was never a custody battle and she has retained her respect for Bruce Jenner, before adding: “Bruce is a good father, and I want him involved with my kids.”

In 1981, Bruce Jenner got married for second time with Linda Thompson, with whom he had two sons, Brandon and Brody. They divorced in 1985.

In 1991, the former Olympian married Kris Kardashian after five months of dating. Bruce Jenner has two daughters with Kris, Kendall and Kylie.

Chrystie Crownover, who is divorced from her second lawyer husband Robert, is still in touch with Bruce Jenner and says that being away from Kris is the best thing that can happen for him and the children.

She said: “I don’t speak to him that often, but it’s better for everyone, especially the kids, that they’re not together and she’s out of his life. Hopefully, they’ll have more of a chance of leading a normal life out of the spotlight.”

“I can’t say anymore, but he’s never been a cross-dresser in all the time I’ve known him,” Chrystie Crownover added.

Hello Kitty is a little girl not a cat

Hello Kitty is not actually a cat, her creators Sanrio have said.

In preparing a Hello Kitty retrospective for the Japanese American National Museum, University of Hawaii Anthropologist Christine R. Yano was given one major correction by Hello Kittyowners Sanrio: She is not a cat.

“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty,” Sanrio said.

She is a British school girl called Kitty White and she lives just outside London, although no-one is saying exactly where.

In fact, Kitty has a whole life story and a family that includes a twin sister called Mimmy.

Although Sanrio has a whole website dedicated to Kitty’s biography, her appearance has suggested that she is animal rather than human – an assumption that also fooled Christine R. Yano.

“That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat,” Christine R. Yano told the LA Times.

“She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat.

“She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature.

“She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

Christine R. Yano claims a lot of people don’t know Kitty’s really a person and that many of her fans who are aware “don’t care”.

And the reason Kitty is British?

“Hello Kitty emerged in the 1970s, when the Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain,” said Christine R. Yano.

“They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealized childhood, almost like a white picket fence.

“So the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time.”

Hello Kitty lives in the suburbs of London and is approximately five apples tall and was born on November 1.

Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer feud explained in Sheila Weller’s tell-all book

Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, and Christiane Amanpour are the subjects of a new tell-all book by Vanity Fair contributor Sheila Weller.

Highlights from the book, appropriately titled The News Sorority, were posted by The Daily Beast on August 27, and include some gossipy bits about the alleged rivalry between Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer.

According to The Daily Beast‘s write-up, Sheila Weller’s tome claims that the two journalists battled each other for scoops when they appeared on competing morning shows – Katie Couric on Today, Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America – in the early 2000s.

The Daily Beast quotes Sheila Weller’s book as saying: “When a friend of Diane’s, a public figure, was being pursued by Katie’s people, the wooed eminence got a call from [Diane’s movie director husband] Mike Nichols, who said – in a very nice way, to be sure – that he and Diane would essentially cut off all social contact if their friend appeared on Today.”

Sheila Weller further alleges that Katie Couric badmouthed Diane Sawyer when the latter scored an interview they both wanted with a 57-year-old woman who’d given birth to twins. Afterward, she writes, Katie Couric was overheard saying: “I wonder who she blew this time to get it.”

Diane Sawyer, for her part, was reportedly at war with Barbara Walters.

“Barbara and Diane were determined to kill each other – to wipe each other off the face of the earth,” Sheila Weller quotes one ABC News staffer as saying.

An excerpt on the book’s Facebook page reads: “As reporters and communicators of that which was beyond their control – the news of the world – and as women in a tremendously competitive professional arena in which their gender was an impediment, their ability to strongly control what they could control has been central to their success. Each has been self-aware and self-powering in a different way, and their careers offer lessons in female survival.”

A source close to Katie Couric said that the book is “overall very positive” about the women, but that the alleged feud is “drummed up into something much bigger than it was”.
