Mohamed Morsi Sentenced to Death over Egypt Mass Prison Break

Egypt’s ousted President Mohamed Morsi and more than 100 other people have been sentenced to death over a mass prison break in 2011.

Mohamed Morsi is already serving a 20-year prison term for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters while in power.

Egypt’s religious authorities will now have to give their opinion before the sentence can be carried out.

Mohamed Morsi’s supporters from his Muslim Brotherhood movement have described the charges against him as “farcical”.

He was deposed by the military in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule.

Since then, the authorities have banned the Muslim Brotherhood and arrested thousands of his supporters.

In a separate case on May 16, an Egyptian court banned football fan clubs known as the Ultras, who played a leading role in protests during the 2011 uprising against then-president Hosni Mubarak.

The former president raised both fists in defiance as the sentences were given.

Mohammed Morsi, who escaped from Wadi Natroun prison in January 2011, was accused of colluding with foreign militants in a plot to free Islamists during the mass prison breaks.Egypt's Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi in court

Many of his 104 co-defendants were Palestinians accused of being members of militant group Hamas, and were charged in absentia.

The court also issued rulings on another case, sentencing 16 Muslim Brotherhood members, including deputy leader Khairat al-Shater, to death on spying charges.

Mohamed Morsi, who also faces espionage charges, will be issued a verdict in that case at a later date.

Hundreds of people have been sentenced to death in a crackdown on the Brotherhood following Mohamed Morsi’s removal in 2013.

However, it is thought that only one such death sentence has been carried out so far.

All death sentences must first be sent to the grand mufti, Egypt’s highest religious authority, for his non-binding opinion on whether they should stand.

Convictions are still open to appeal, even if the grand mufti gives his approval.

The death sentence was condemned by Amnesty International, which said it had become a tool “to purge the political opposition”, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who likened it to a return to “ancient Egypt”.

Mohamed Morsi was Egypt’s first freely elected president, but protests began building less than a year into his rule when he issued a decree granting himself far-reaching powers.

The armed forces, led by then-military chief Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, ousted Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

In May 2014, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi became president after securing a landslide victory in presidential elections with a turnout of 46%.

#WarOnTerrier: Johnny Depp’s Dogs Leave Australia

0

Johnny Depp’s Yorkshire Terriers Boo and Pistol have been flown out of Australia after facing being put down, the country’s agriculture minister has said.

Barnaby Joyce tweeted: “Dogs gone.”

Johnny Depp was accused of not declaring the dogs to customs officials when they flew into Queensland by private jet in April.

Thanking Johnny Depp and his wife Amber Heard for co-operating, Barnaby Joyce said Australia had “strict biosecurity requirements for good reasons”.

Australia’s agriculture minister had given Johny Depp a deadline of May 16 to return the dogs to the US or they would be put down.Johnny Depp dogs leave Australia

Australia’s quarantine regulations aim at preventing diseases such as rabies reaching its shores.

Barnaby Joyce has been criticized for his strong stance, with thousands signing a petition to spare them. He received praise and condemnation from people using the #WarOnTerrier hashtag.

The minister defended his position by saying: “If we start letting movie stars… to come into our nation, then why don’t we just break the laws for everybody?”

The dogs’ illicit entry appears to have been uncovered after a grooming salon on the Gold Coast posted pictures of them on its Facebook page.

Biosecurity officials then visited the vast Gold Coast house Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are renting on May 13 and ordered the dogs into quarantine.

Johnny Depp is in Australia to shoot the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Sentenced to Death for Boston Marathon Bombings

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

Three people were killed and 260 were injured when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan placed bombs at the finishing line of the Boston Marathon in 2013.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, now 21, is likely to be moved to a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, to await execution, but there could be years of appeals.

Victims sobbed as the sentence was read, but Dzhkhar Tsarnaev showed no emotion.Dzhokhar Tsarnaev sentenced to death

“Now he will go away and we will be able to move on. Justice. In his own words, <<an eye for an eye>>,” said bombing victim Sydney Corcoran, who nearly bled to death and whose mother lost both legs.

After 14 hours of deliberations, the jury concluded that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev showed no remorse and therefore should be put to death.

“The jury has spoken. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will pay for his crimes with his life,” said US Attorney Carmen Ortiz.

Massachusetts as a state ended the death penalty in 1984, but Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was tried on federal charges, meaning he was eligible for execution.

After the sentence was announced, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said: “The ultimate penalty is a fitting punishment for this horrific crime and we hope that the completion of this prosecution will bring some measure of closure to the victims and their families.”

However, not all of the victims supported the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The parents of Martin Richard, an 8-year-old boy killed in the blast, wrote an article in the Boston Globe newspaper last month asking the government to not seek a death sentence as it would delay their emotional closure.

Xavier Bettel Marriage: Luxembourg PM Marries Partner Gauthier Destenay

Luxembourg’s PM Xavier Bettel married his partner Gauthier Destenay on May 15 in a private ceremony at the capital’s town hall.

Xavier Bettel has become the first serving EU leader – and second leader in the world – to marry a same-gender partner.

The prime minister and his partner are among the first to benefit after the country changed its laws to allow gay marriages last year.

The union comes after Iceland’s then-PM Johanna Sigurdardottir married her same-gender partner in 2010.

Xavier Bettel formed a government in December 2013 to become Luxembourg’s first openly gay prime minister.

He announced that he and his civil partner Gauthier Destenay, an architect, would be getting married just months after lawmakers approved the law change in June 2014.

“I could have hidden it or repressed it and been unhappy my whole life,” Xavier Bettel reportedly told a Belgian broadcaster the night before the nuptials.

“But I told myself that if you want to be a politician and be honest in politics, you have to be honest with yourself and accept that you are who you are.”

Former Belgian PM Elio di Rupo was the EU’s first openly gay national leader.

The Luxembourg newly-weds are not expected to go away on a honeymoon, as Xavier Bettel has to attend an economic forum in Kazakhstan, according to AFP news agency.

A friend of the couple told the French news agency Xavier Bettel was keen to keep his private life out of the public spotlight.

Among the guests spotted in the crowd was Belgian PM Charles Michel, according to Luxemburger Wort newspaper.

Correspondents say Luxembourg was previously a conservative Catholic country but attitudes have changed in recent years, in part due to the high number of immigrants and foreign workers.

Christie’s alone took more than $1.3 billion during the course of its two days sales this week.

The Edge Falls off Stage During Vancouver Concert

The Edge fell off stage during the opening night of U2’s world tour.

The rock band’s guitarist, real name David Howell Evans, has said he is fine.

U2 were performing their encore at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver when the 53-year-old took a tumble.

A video posted online of the incident shows the guitarist appearing to misjudge the unconventional shape of the stage and stepping off the side. The Edge falls off stage in Vancouver

The Edge later posted a picture of his grazed arm on Instagram saying: “Didn’t see the edge, I’m ok!”

U2 have just begun their Innocence + Experience tour, which will see them play some 70 dates across North America and Europe.

U2’s frontman Bono has also taken a dive on several occasions.

Bono fell backwards off stage at a Miami concert in 2001 and slipped off a rainy stage in Washington DC in 1987 – dislocating his arm and requiring him to wear a sling for a dozen shows.

He also fell in 1983 during a gig in Germany after trying to climb a barricade.

Last November, Bono also underwent five hours of surgery after breaking his arm in six places and suffering a broken eye socket as a result of a “high-energy bicycle accident” in New York.

Khalid al-Fawwaz Jailed for Life over 1998 US Embassies Bombings

Osama bin Laden’s former aide Khalid Abdulrahman al-Fawwaz has been sentenced to life in jail for aiding in the bombing of US embassies in east Africa in 1998 that killed 224 people.

Saudi national Khalid al-Fawwaz was arrested in London the same year as the bombings, and was extradited to the US 14 years later.

He has been called Osama bin Laden’s spokesman and al-Qaeda’s media adviser in London.

Khalid al-Fawwaz was convicted in February of four conspiracy charges.

Prosecutors say he operated an office in London where he disseminated Osama bin Laden’s fatwas, or religious decrees, to media outlets.

Khalid al-Fawwaz was also accused of using the office to send communications equipment, including a satellite phone, to the al-Qaeda leader.

The sentence was read out by a Manhattan jury at a heavily guarded downtown courthouse.

Khalid al-Fawwaz’s lawyers argued that he was a peaceful political dissident and not a violent terrorist.

Candy Crush Saga: King Digital Shares Fall After Weaker Profits

0

King Digital shares fell as much as over 14% in after hours trading after it warned of weaker profits.

Candy Crush maker said it expects fluctuations in foreign currency and a lack of new releases to hold back its earnings in the current quarter.

The big drop in King Digital (KING) shares came despite the release of first quarter sales figures that beat market expectations.

The company has been struggling to increase market share.King Digital Candy Crush Saga shares

King Digital’s revenue fell 6.1% to $569.5 million in the first three months of the year from a year ago, but that was higher than analysts’ forecasts of $563.4 million.

“We look toward the remainder of the year, we expect the mid-year period to be seasonally softer, returning to growth trends in the latter part of the year,” the company said in a statement on May 14.

The company is launching a new game this year, but that will not be released until the later half of the year.

King Digital said that falls in both gross bookings and revenue in the first quarter were largely due to lower sales from its Candy Crush Saga and other “more mature games” – a sign that players are moving on to other games.

Burundi Coup Attempt: Three Generals Arrested

0

Three Burundian generals, who launched a failed coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza, have been arrested, reports say.

Their leader, General Godefroid Niyombare, is still “on the run”, according to a presidential spokesman.

Godefroid Niyombare, who launched the coup attempt on May 13, told the AFP news agency: “I hope they won’t kill us.”Burundi coup attempt 2015

President Pierre Nkurunziza has tweeted he is back home. He was in Tanzania when the coup attempt against his bid to seek a third term was launched.

Five soldiers were killed in clashes in the capital, Bujumbura, on May 14.

“We have decided to surrender,” Gen. Godefroid Niyombare told AFP. He added that troops loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza were approaching him.

Another of the renegade generals, Gen. Cyrille Ndayirukiye, admitted earlier that the attempt to overthrow the president had failed.

Thousands celebrated on the streets of the capital after Gen. Godefroid Niyombare announced the takeover on national radio on May 13 whilst President Nkurunziza attended a summit in Tanzania.

This followed weeks of protests against Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to seek a third term in office, an apparently unconstitutional move, causing tens of thousands to flee Burundi.

Born in Mississippi, B.B. King began performing in the 1940s and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The blues legend was recently taken to hospital with a diabetes-related illness.

Rolling Stone magazine once ranked B.B. King in third place in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, just below Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman.

B.B. King, who sold millions of records worldwide, was awarded his 15th Grammy award in 2009 for his album One Kind Favor.

Even until recently, B.B. King performed in at least 100 concerts a year.

#WarOnTerrier: Johnny Depp’s Dogs to Leave Australia

Johnny Depp’s pet dogs are preparing to leave Australia to escape death penalty.

Australia’s Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce had said Boo and Pistol would have to be put down by May 16 if they did not leave, because they were “snuck in” from the US.

Johnny Depp, 51, is currently living in Australia while filming Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The actor and his wife Amber Heard are accused of not declaring the Yorkshire Terriers to customs officials when they flew into Queensland by private jet last month.Johnny Depp dogs Australia

Australia has strict import laws to prevent non-native diseases entering the country.

The fate of Johnny Depp’s dogs has gripped Australia and world media.

An online petition calling on Barnaby Joyce to spare them now has more than 17,000 signatures and it sparked a debate about the #waronterrier on Twitter.

The dogs should have been properly checked and certificated and then quarantined after arriving in Australia.

Their illicit entry appears to have been uncovered after a grooming salon on the Gold Coast posted pictures of them on its Facebook page.

Barnaby Joyce said on May 14: “If we start letting movie stars… to come into our nation, then why don’t we just break the laws for everybody?

“It’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States.”

Meanwhile, the minister had demanded an apology from a radio presenter who accused him of over-reacting.

Kiis FM “shock jock” Kyle Sandilands told Barnaby Joyce in an angry telephone interview on Friday that he sounded “like an absolute clown” who made Australians “sound like a bunch of hillbilly redneck losers” by publicly threatening the life of someone’s pets.

“Sound like a classy guy. You’re a government minister. Have some decency.”

Barnaby Joyce replied “it’s the law, mate; that’s how it works,” before he was cut off.

Customs officials are facing questions over how the dogs were let in despite the strict regulations, while Johnny Depp and Amber Heard could face a fine.

Honda and Daihatsu to Recall 5 Million Cars over Faulty Takata Airbag

0

Honda and Daihatsu have decided to recall some 5 million cars globally to replace potentially deadly airbag inflators made by Takata.

The move comes just a day after rivals Toyota and Nissan said they would be recalling 6.5 million vehicles over the same issue.

So far, the six deaths linked to Takata airbags have all been in Honda cars.

In April, Honda cut its profit growth forecast after missing the mark last year on recalls and other issues.Honda recall Takata airbag

Honda said that the models affected included the Fit subcompact and would not affect its cars sold in the US, where most of the deaths occurred.

It plans to use replacement parts supplied by Sweden’s Autolive, Japan’s Daicel and Takata in the recalled cars.

Daihatsu, meanwhile, said it would recall the Mira minicar.

Other than Honda, all other carmakers said the recalls were precautionary and no accidents or injuries had been reported.

Investigations did show that Takata airbag inflators were not properly sealed and could be damaged by moisture. It is alleged that the airbags can burst under pressure, spraying shrapnel inside the car.

The latest announcements bring the total number of cars recalled because of Takata’s airbags to about 36 million since 2008.

The car equipment maker faces multiple class action lawsuits and criminal and regulatory investigations in North America.

Following the latest recall, Takata’s shares were down 5.6% in Tokyo.

Brandon Bostian: Amtrak Driver Has No Recollection of Train Crash

0

Amtrak driver Brandon Bostian, the engineer of the speeding train that crashed in Philadelphia, has said he can’t remember the deadly crash.

Brandon Bostian, 32, experienced concussion, 14 stitches in his head and more in his leg from the wreck, his lawyer Robert Goggin told ABC News.

At least eight people have died and dozens more were hurt in the crash.

An eighth body was recovered in the Amtrak rubble on May 14, fire officials said.

The train was going 106mph before derailing on a curve where the speed limit is 50 mph.

Federal investigators don’t know why the train was travelling that fast.Brandon Bostian Amtrak train crash

Robert Goggin, who is speaking for Brandon Bostian because he hasn’t given a statement to law enforcement yet, said the driver remembers coming into the curve, trying to reduce the speed of the train and then getting knocked out. He doesn’t remember using the emergency brake.

Brandon Bostian is cooperating with police and consented to a blood test along with giving up his mobile phone. He claims not to have been drinking or doing drugs.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said the engineer was “clearly reckless and irresponsible”.

“Part of the focus has to be, what was the engineer doing? Why are you travelling at that rate of speed?” Michael Nutter said.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), however, was not as quick to blame Brandon Bostian. Accident investigators want to give Brandon Bostian some time to recover from shock before they start talking to him about the accident.

Officials said the accident could have been prevented if Positive Train Control, a safety mechanism, was implemented in the area.

Brandon Bostian worked for Amtrak as a conductor for nine years. He became an engineer in 2010. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2006.

Sarah Brightman Postpones Space Adventure

Sarah Brightman has announced she will not be going to the International Space Station (ISS) in September 2015.

The British soprano wrote on her blog that she was postponing the adventure for “personal family reasons”, giving no further explanation.

Sarah Brightman, 54, was due to fly to the ISS on 1 September as a tourist.

When, or even if, Sarah Brightman will get to complete her dream of a 10-day holiday in orbit is not clear.

It is thought such a trip would cost the singer about $50 million.

Space Adventures, the company that was organizing Sarah Brightman’s trip, is given only a very limited number of seats on Soyuz rockets to sell to tourists.

Who will take Sarah Brightman’s berth in September is uncertain. It ought to be Sarah Brightman’s back-up – a Japanese executive Satoshi Takamatsu, but Space Adventures has yet to confirm this.

Space Adventures’ Eric Anderson said: “Since 2012, Sarah has shared her story of a lifelong dream to fly to space. Her international fame as the world’s best-selling soprano has enabled her message to circle the globe, inspiring others to pursue their own dreams.

“We’ve seen firsthand her dedication to every aspect of her spaceflight training and to date, has passed all of her training and medical tests. We applaud her determination and we’ll continue to support her as she pursues a future spaceflight opportunity.”

The European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who was due to join Sarah Brightman in the Soyuz in September, tweeted: “Sad to lose a fantastic crew mate. Best of luck, Sarah.”

Flights to and from the ISS are currently on hold following the failure of a robotic cargo ship in late April.

Harry Shearer Leaves The Simpsons Following Dispute with Producers

Harry Shearer has announced he will leave The Simpsons after more than 25 years following a dispute with producers.

The 71-year-old actor voices Ned Flanders and Mr. Burns in the show.

Executive producer Al Jean said in a statement to the New York Times that Harry Shearer had turned down a new pay deal.

The Simpsons “will go on” and the actor’s characters will be recast, Al Jean added.

Harry Shearer took to Twitter to say the decision “wasn’t about money” and that signing up to a new series would have stopped him from doing other work.

He provided the voice for addled school principal Seymour Skinner as well as rapacious millionaire Montgomery Burns and Ned Flanders, Homer Simpson’s chipper neighbor.Harry Shearer leaves The Simpsons

Harry Shearer has announced he is leaving the long-running animated series on Twitter claiming that a lawyer for executive producer James L. Brooks said: “Show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.”

In a follow-up tweet, the actor added: “This because I wanted what we’ve always had: The freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best.”

In response, Al Jean wrote: “Harry Shearer was offered the same deal the rest of the cast accepted, and passed.

“The show will go on and we wish him well. Maggie took it hard.

“We do not plan to kill off characters like Burns and Flanders but will recast with the finest voiceover talent available.”

Last week, the Fox network confirmed it had commissioned two more series of The Simpsons.

According to reports at the time, Harry Shearer had yet to sign a new contract.

On May 14, Harry Shearer stressed that he had no plans to retire.

The Simpsons has been on air since 1989, and the new series will take the total number of episodes to 625.

China’s Army Bans Smartwatches over Security Fears

China’s army has imposed a ban on smartwatches and wearable tech over security fears.

According to the People’s Liberation Army Daily, the Chinese military’s official newspaper, security concerns had been raised after one recruit had received a smartwatch as a birthday gift.

One expert said the move was a natural extension of restrictions already placed by most armies on mobile phones.

The warning was prompted by one incident in a military district in East China where a new recruit received a smartwatch as a gift from his girlfriend and tried to use the device to take a photo of his fellow soldiers.

His squad leader stopped him and reported the matter to higher authorities, which ruled that such devices can harm military action and security.China's Army Bans Smartwatches over Security Fears

The newspaper said the country’s agency responsible for protecting state secrets subsequently issued the following decree: “The use of wearables with internet access, location information, and voice-calling functions should be considered a violation of confidential regulations when used by military personnel.”

It reported that teaching materials and warning signs had subsequently been created to ensure that the message was spread among military personnel.

“The moment a soldier puts on a device that can record high-definition audio and video, take photos, and process and transmit data, it’s very possible for him or her to be tracked or to reveal military secrets,” the newspaper added.

One expert suggested, however, that the rise of wearable tech posed a challenge to military forces across the globe.

The army ban comes on the heels of a separate controversy over a Chinese TV anchor who appeared on-air wearing what looked like an Apple Watch and was accused by some viewers of “showing off her wealth.”

Philadelphia Amtrak Crash: Train Travelling at Twice the Speed Limit

0

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia, killing at least seven people, was travelling at twice the speed limit.

The driver applied the emergency brakes when the train hit 106mph on a 50mph track, said the NTSB.

His efforts had only brought the speed down to 102mph when the deadly crash happened.

The speed was recorded in the so-called black box recovered from the wreckage.

Robert Sumwalt of the NTSB told reporters a speed control system in place along parts of that route along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor was not yet in place on that section.Philadelphia Amtrak train crash May 2015

He said: “We feel that had such a system been installed in this section of track, this accident would not have occurred.”

Amtrak Train 188 was going from Washington to New York when it derailed on May 12, leaving more 200 people injured.

The death toll rose from six to seven on May 13, as another body was found by the search and rescue team.

Only three victims have been publicly identified so far. Jim Gaines, a 48-year-old father of two and software architect for the Associated Press, was travelling home to New Jersey following a work conference in Washington DC. Justin Zemser, a-20 year-old Navy Midshipman, was on leave from the Naval Academy in Maryland, and was visiting family in New York. Wells Fargo senior vice-president Abid Gilani, the company confirmed.

One of the busiest stretches of passenger rail in the country, between Philadelphia and New York, is closed as officials continue to try to establish exactly what happened.

President Barack Obama said he was “shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the derailment”.

As emergency crews continued to dig through the wreckage, lawmakers in Washington debated the future of Amtrak’s budget, with one spending committee voting to slash their funding by almost a fifth.

Congress has only 18 more days before federal funding for transportation infrastructure expires, but the funding is likely to be temporarily extended.

Amtrak is a national publicly funded rail service, serving tens of millions of people every year.

USA Freedom Act: House Rejects NSA’s Bulk Collection of Phone Records

0

House of Representatives has rejected the NSA’s bulk collection of Americans’ phone records after voting in favor of the USA Freedom Act.

A 338-to-88 overwhelming vote in favor of the USA Freedom Act, already backed by the White House, means Senate backing would make it law.

The bill would empower the NSA to search data held by telephone companies on a case-by-case basis.

Bulk collection was revealed in 2013 by NSA’s former contractor Edward Snowden.House approves USA Freedom Act

Supporters of the Freedom Act, including privacy and civil rights advocates, say it protects privacy while preserving national security powers.

The bill, which only affects people within the US, would amend sections of the USA Patriot Act, which was passed after the 9/11 attacks and which will expire on June 1st.

The amendments would ban the NSA’s mass collection of telephone data – phone numbers, time and duration of calls – as well as emails and web addresses.

“Americans’ liberty and America’s security can co-exist,” said House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, who voted in favor of the bill.

“These fundamental concepts are not mutually exclusive.”

Earlier this month, a US appeals court ruled that bulk collection of phone records by the National Security Agency was illegal.

Burundi Coup: President Pierre Nkurunziza Unable to Return from Tanzania

A coup took place in Burundi while President Pierre Nkurunziza was out of the country.

Pierre Nkurunziza flew back from a summit in Tanzania, but the airport had been closed to stop him from landing. His plane reportedly returned to Tanzania.

Heavy fighting has been taking place overnight between soldiers loyal to the president and those who back the coup.

Confusion remains as to whether the coup has been successful or not.

Burundi coup was announced by Maj. Gen. Godefroid Niyombare, a former intelligence chief and ally of the president who was dismissed in February, after Pierre Nkurunziza left for Tanzania on May 13.Burundi coup 2015

Thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate the announcement.

However, overnight, army chief of staff Gen. Prime Niyongabo – a supporter of President Pierre Nkurunziza – announced: “The attempted coup… has been stopped.”

His announcement came after a night of negotiations between Gen. Prime Niyongabo and the defense minister, who backs the coup.

Factions loyal to each side began fighting each other for control of the national television and radio station, witnesses said.

There has been mounting unrest in Burundi since President Pierre Nkurunziza, who came to power in 2005, announced he was seeking a third term in office – apparently in contravention of the constitution.

Announcing the coup, Gen. Godefroid Niyombare said he did not recognize the leadership because the president’s bid for a third term violated the constitution.

“The masses vigorously and tenaciously reject President Nkurunziza’s third-term mandate. President Pierre Nkurunziza has been relieved of his duties. The government is overthrown,” he said in a radio broadcast.

A few hours later the Burundi presidency dismissed the coup attempt, saying: “It is with regret that we have learned that a group from the armed forces mutinied this morning and declared an imaginary coup.

“This coup attempt has been foiled and that these people, who read the coup announcement on the radio, are being hunted by defense and security forces so that they can be brought to justice.”

Pierre Nkurunziza had been in Dar es Salaam to discuss the crisis with regional leaders.

He flew back to Burundi upon learning of the coup, but the airport had been shut to prevent him landing, and so he had returned to Dar es Salaam. It is not clear if he remains there.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said the summit had condemned the coup, adding: “The region will not accept, nor will the region stand by, if violence does not stop or escalates in Burundi.”

The US and UN have appealed for calm.

Burundi unrest began on April 26 and has led to the deaths of more than 20 people.

Tens of thousands of Burundians have fled to neighboring states in recent weeks.

President Pierre Nkurunziza has rejected calls to postpone next month’s election. However, the summit in Tanzania urged him to do so.

Pierre Nkurunziza, a 51-year-old former rebel leader, argues that he is entitled to run for a third term because he was first appointed to the role by parliament in 2005.

The Burundian constitution states a president should govern only for two terms, but earlier this month a court upheld Pierre Nkurunziza’s interpretation.

Johnny Depp Ilegally Sneaks His Dogs in Australia

Johnny Depp’s dogs face death in Australia if they are not removed from the country until May 16.

The 51-year-old Hollywood star and his wife, Amber Heard, are accused of breaking import laws by not declaring their Yorkshire Terriers, Boo and Pistol, to customs when they flew in to Queensland by private jet last month.

Australia has strict quarantine laws to prevent the accidental import of animal disease and infections.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said the laws applied to everyone.Johnny Depp and Amber Heard dogs

Barnaby Joyce said Boo and Pistol had been “snuck in” to Australia and were discovered when they were taken to a dog groomer.

“Mr. Depp has to either take his dogs back to California or we’re going to have to euthanise them,” he told reporters on May 14.

“He’s now got about 50 hours left to remove the dogs. He can put them on the same charter jet he flew out on and fly back out of our nation.”

Dogs brought into Australia must be law be quarantined for a minimum of 10 days after arrival, longer if they are suspected of carrying any diseases or tics.

An online petition to save the “cute dogs” had received more than 1,300 signatories by midday on May 14.

“Have a heart Barnaby! Don’t kill these cute puppies,” it appealed.

There was no immediate comment from Johnny Depp or Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp is in Australia filming the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The actor’s spokesman, Brett Chant, said the dogs were in “home quarantine”, but he did not specify where, the AP reported.

2015 Cannes Film Festival Opens with Emmanuelle Bercot’s La Tete Haute

The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival is getting under way in the south of France.

This year’s festival is being held from May 13 to 24.

Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman are among the notables due to attend.

Other stars, among them Cate Blanchett and Matthew McConaughey, are expected to appear during the 12-day event.

Sienna Miller and Jake Gyllenhaal will sit on a competition jury headed by sibling duo Joel and Ethan Coen.

Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off later with a gala screening of French drama La Tete Haute (Standing Tall).

France is well-represented in the race for the festival’s top prize, making up five of the 19 Palme d’Or entries.

Yet this year’s line-up has been criticized for including a number of films by European film-makers that feature both Hollywood stars and English-language dialogue.Cannes Film Festival 2015

They include Youth, from Italy’s Paolo Sorrentino, which stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as old friends vacationing in the Alps.

Another contentious title is The Lobster, from Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos, which was shot in Dublin and has a cast headed by Colin Farrell.

A more welcomed development this year is the festival’s perceived championing of female film-makers.

La Tete Haute director Emmanuelle Bercot is only the second woman to win the coveted opening night slot since the festival began in 1946.

Director Agnes Varda, who made her name during the French New Wave of the 1960s, will become the first woman to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.

Natalie Portman, meanwhile, is presenting a special screening of her feature directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, about the early years of Israel.

Hotly anticipated titles this year include a new film version of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender in the title role.

Also included in the competition line-up is Todd Haynes’ Carol, in which Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara play lovers in 1950s New York.

Films screening out of competition include Woody Allen’s latest, Irrational Man, and Amy, a documentary about Amy Winehouse that has been called “misleading” by the late singer’s father.

Mad Max: Fury Road will also have a special screening on May 14, the same day the latest installment in the apocalyptic action series opens in cinemas.
