Germanwings Plane Crash: First Victims’ Remains Return to Germany

The first victims’ remains of Germanwings plane crash have arrived in Dusseldorf, Germany, where they will be returned to families for burial about 11 weeks after the disaster that killed all 150 people onboard.

Lufthansa sent 44 coffins by cargo plane on Tuesday night from Marseille.

Elmar Giemulla, a lawyer for some of the families, said the arrival of the remains would give relatives “closure”.

Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz is believed to have intentionally flown the Airbus A320 into the French Alps in March, killing 150 people.

Sixteen of the victims were from the Joseph-Koenig-Gymnasium school in Haltern and were returning from an exchange trip in Barcelona when the plane crashed.

Families will be allowed to visit the coffins inside a hangar in Dusseldorf on Wednesday, June 10.

Elmar Giemulla told AFP: “The families are in denial. They cannot and do not want to realize that their children are dead.

“It will be brutal when they see the coffins tomorrow, but it is necessary, because they need closure.”

The remains of the rest of the victims will be sent back over the coming weeks. The passengers were from 18 countries, including Australia, Argentina and Japan, but most of those on board were either Spanish or German.

The repatriation of some of the bodies was delayed last week because of errors on the death certificates in France.

Aung San Suu Kyi Makes China Debut Visit

Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to begin her first visit to China on June 10, at a time of tension between the two countries.

Aung San Suu Kyi will meet President Xi Jinping and PM Li Keqiang, but no other details have been provided.

Relations between Myanmar (also known as Burma) and China have cooled in recent years, partly because of violence near their mutual border.

Myanmar has been fighting rebels in its eastern Kokang region, which borders China’s Yunnan province.

China is concerned about violence spilling over the border. At least five people in Yunnan died in March when an aircraft from Myanmar dropped a bomb on a sugar cane field.

China sent patrols to the border in response.

Since reforms were introduced in 2011, the government of President Thein Sein has allied itself closely with the US, although China continues to help develop major infrastructure projects in Myanmar.

Given the possibility that Aung San Suu Kyi’s party will do well in upcoming elections, Beijing is determined to put pragmatism first and build a relationship with a woman whose politics it deplores, she adds.

As head of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to play a key role in the presidential elections this November.

Aung San Suu Kyi is unlikely to run for president, however, as a clause in the constitution blocks her from standing because her husband and children are foreign citizens.

Two nuns of the Marist Sisters religious order have been rescued from an elevator in Rome after being trapped for nearly three days without food and water.

The 69-year-old from New Zealand and a 58-year-old Irish nun have been rescued on June 8 after they got stuck in an elevator during a power outage on June 5.

They were discovered on June8 by a cleaner who called police after ringing the doorbell and receiving no reply.

According to Il Messaggero, the police entered the building and called out if anyone was there and the nuns replied: “Yes, we are here, in the elevator.”

They were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated for dehydration.

Victoria Siegel Cause of Death to Be Revealed in Two Months

Victoria Siegel’s cause of death will be revealed in 8-10 weeks, the medical examiner’s office told RadarOnline.com.

Victoria Siegel, the 18-year-old daughter of Queen of Versailles stars David and Jackie Siegel, was found unresponsive by a housekeeper at her parents’ Seagull Island mansion on Green Island Cove on Saturday afternoon.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Victoria was the second eldest of David and Jackie Siegel’s eight children.

Despite rumors that Victoria Siegel overdosed on drugs before her shocking death, District Nine Medical Examiner’s Office spokesperson Sherry Blanton told RadarOnline: “All we have released is that it is a pending cause and manner of death,” adding that OD reports are just “speculation.”

Sherry Blanton said the cause of death will likely remain undetermined for the next two months while examiners complete testing, the Orlando, Florida, based office.

Albert Woodfox, an inmate who has been in solitary confinement for 43 years, will be unconditionally released, a federal judge in Louisiana has ordered.

Judge James Brady also banned prosecutors from trying Albert Woodfox for a third time.

Albert Woodfox, now 68, has been in solitary confinement since April 18, 1972 after a prison riot that resulted in the death of a guard.

The inmate was tried twice for the guard’s death, but both convictions were later overturned. He denies all the charges.

Snoop Dogg is suing Pabst Brewing, saying the beer maker owes him money from the sale of the company and its beer line in 2014.

In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles, Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus Jr., is seeking 10% of the net sales paid to Pabst for its Colt 45 malt beer line in the sale.

Snoop Dogg had signed a three-year deal to endorse the beer line in 2011.

Under his contract, the rapper was to receive a portion of the sale of the brand if Pabst sold it before January 2016.

The sale of Pabst to beer entrepreneur Eugene Kashper and investment firm TSG Consumer Partners was finalized in November, but no purchase price was announced.

Snoop Dogg’s lawyer, Alex Weingarten, however, states in the lawsuit that the beer company was sold for $700 millio, according to AP. The sale price of the beer, called Blast by Colt 45, was not disclosed.

The rapper had a payment of $250,000 for the contract and received another $20,000 for every 10th mention he made of the beer on social media, TV or during a concert.

Pabst, the maker of beers like Old Milwaukee and Schlitz, said in a statement that it had not been contacted by Snoop Dogg or his representatives about the proceed claims.

British bank HSBC is planning to cut 8,000 jobs in the UK as it tries to reduce costs and simplify its business.

Europe’s biggest bank has 48,000 workers in the UK and will make cuts in both its retail and investment banking operations.

A total of 25,000 jobs could be axed worldwide, meaning close to 10% of HSBC’s 266,000 workers will go.

HSBC will also ring-fence its UK operations and sell businesses in Turkey and Brazil, it said on June 9.

The 10-point plan aims to cut costs by up to $5 billion and increase investment in Asia – particularly in China.

At a news conference in Germany, President Barack Obama has revealed the US does not yet have a “complete strategy” for helping Iraq regain territory from Islamic State (ISIS).

He said the Pentagon was reviewing ways to help Iraq train and equip its forces.

However, Barack Obama said a full commitment to the process was needed by the Iraqis themselves.

The president had earlier met Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Germany.

In May the militants seized Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, Iraq’s largest province, as well as the Syrian town of Tadmur and the neighboring ancient ruins of Palmyra.

However, Barack Obama said that the 3,000 US service personnel in Iraq sometimes found themselves with “more training capacity than we’ve got recruits”.

“We don’t have, yet, a complete strategy, because it requires commitments on the part of Iraqis as well about how recruitment takes place, how that training takes place,” Barack Obama told a news conference.

“We want to get more Iraqi security forces trained, fresh, well-equipped and focused and [Haider al-] Abadi wants the same thing so we’re reviewing a range of plans for how we might do that.”

President Barack Obama said he was “absolutely confident” ISIS would be driven out of Iraq if Haider al-Abadi has the support of the international coalition as well as a government that represents all the Iraqi people.

The president said all countries in the coalition were ready to do more to help train Iraqi security forces.

Iraq has become increasingly reliant on Iranian-backed Shia militias to take on ISIS in recent months.

United Passions, a vanity film about the history of soccer’s governing body FIFA, has flopped in the US, taking just $607 in its opening weekend.

The movie was funded by about $25 million of FIFA cash, and was completed before corruption charges were made against 14 of its officials at the end of last month.

Starring Tim Roth as Sepp Blatter, the hagiography of FIFA has had damning reviews.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the FilmBar cinema in Phoenix reported takings of just $9, meaning only one person bought a ticket.

The movie’s release came as FIFA faces an investigation into allegations of corruption during the bidding process to host the 2010 World Cup.

The DoJ has indicted a total of 14 current and former FIFA officials and associates on charges of “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted” corruption following a major inquiry by the FBI.

President Sepp Blatter stood down last week, although he faces no charges himself.

United Passions purports to present the history of FIFA through three leaders, and co-stars Sam Neill as Sepp Blatter’s predecessor, Joao Havelange, and Gerard Depardieu, who plays FIFA founder Jules Rimet.

Morocco’s PM Abdelilah Benkirane has ordered an investigation into the public TV broadcast of a Jennifer Lopez concert in the country.

J. Lo’s performance at the Mawazine festival in Rabat on May 29 was aired on the 2M public TV network.

Abdelilah Benkirane said the airing was “serious delinquency”, adding it contained “disgraceful scenes”.

He added the broadcast was in violation of Morocco’s audiovisual law.

Last week, Morocco’s minister of communication was criticized for allowing the concert to air on public TV, leading to calls for him to resign.

An educational group is also suing Jennifer Lopez over the performance, claiming she “disturbed public order and tarnished women’s honor and respect”, TMZ reported.

In the event Jennifer Lopez and her promoter are prosecuted, the sentence could be up to two years in prison.

The escape of convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat from a maximum security jail in New York has been described as a “crisis situation” by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, used power tools to break out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora near the Canadian border.

Andrew Cuomo said: “These are dangerous men capable of committing grave crimes again.”

New York State is offering a $100,000 reward for any information leading to Richard Matt and David Sweat arrest.

The governor said the prison breakout was the first escape from the facility in 150 years.

Richard Matt and David Sweat then climbed up through a manhole into a nearby street, “disappearing into the darkness some 20 miles south of Canada”.

They placed bundles of clothing in their beds to fool guards into believing they were asleep, before making their escape during Friday night. Their absence from adjoining cells was not discovered until the following morning.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said someone must have heard at least some of the noise.

After the prisoners were apprehended, the authorities would conduct a full review of the escape, he added.

“We’ll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again.”

Richard Matt was given a jail term of 25 years to life for the kidnapping and beating a man to death in 1997.

David Sweat was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy, Kevin Tarsia.

Police are trying to determine how the men acquired the tools needed to carry out the escape.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo posted pictures of pipes and walls with chunks cut out after he was shown the inmates’ escape route.

More than 200 officers are searching for Richard Matt and David Sweat, using sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance.

They may have crossed the border into Canada or headed to another state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. There is also concern they may have had assistance from someone outside the prison.

Roadblocks have been set up in the area to catch Richard Matt and David Sweat, who both have distinctive tattoos, according to local media.
