Hillary Clinton Opposes Keystone Pipeline

0

Hillary Clinton says she opposes the controversial Keystone XL pipeline which would carry Canadian oil to the US.

The US State Department is still studying whether to go ahead with the Keystone XL project.

The Democratic presidential candidate has previously avoided taking a position on the matter.

Now, at a campaign event in Iowa, Hillary Clinton said the pipeline would be a “distraction from the important work we have to do to combat climate change”.Hillary Clinton opposes Keystone pipeline

“Therefore, I oppose it,” she told supporters.

Until now, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had avoiding giving an opinion on the project, saying she did not want to interfere with the Obama administration’s deliberations.

However, Hillary Clinton’s main rival for the Democratic candidacy, Bernie Sanders, has long opposed the scheme and called on her to make her position clear.

The 1,179-mile pipe was first proposed seven years ago, and would transport oil from the oil sands in Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico via Nebraska.

Supporters say the project will create jobs and US increase energy security, while opponents say it will only increase carbon emissions.

Turing Pharmaceuticals to Cut Daraprim Price After Backlash

0

Turing Pharmaceuticals has announced it will lower the price of Daraprim after faced a backlash following raising the price of the drug used by AIDS patients by over 5,000%.

Turing CEO Martin Shkreli told reporters he would drop the price following the outcry, but did not say by how much.

Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to Daraprim in August 2015.

The company then raised the cost of the drug, which treats a parasitic infection, from $13.50 to $750.

Amid criticism from medical groups – one called the cost “unjustifiable” – Martin Shkreli on September 21 defended the increase, saying the profits would help research new treatments.Daraprim price increase scandal 2015

Martin Shkreli accused critics of not understanding the pharmaceutical industry.

He has now told ABC News: “We’ve agreed to lower the price on Daraprim to a point that is more affordable and is able to allow the company to make a profit, but a very small profit.”

Earlier in the day, PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry’s main lobbying group, tweeted that Turing “does not represent the values of PhRMA member companies”.

Agreeing a price for any drug is a tricky business.

In the US, the buyers are private insurance companies as well as the government through the Medicare and Medicaid system. It’s a market and prices can go up and down, depending on what people are willing to pay.

In recent years, pharmaceutical research and development has slowed and companies have to think carefully about what they invest in. Blockbusters such as Viagra pull in money, but orphan drugs for rare diseases can be less attractive. Not many patients use them, and so turning a profit may be difficult.

Pope Francis Welcomed by Barack Obama and First Family as He Lands in US

0

Pope Francis has been welcomed by President Barack Obama as he landed in the US on September 22 – a rare honor for a foreign dignitary.

The pontiff has begun his trip to the US, where he is expected to greet millions of American Catholics and address thorny issues like climate change and income inequality.

Pope Francis will visit Washington DC, New York and Philadelphia.

Before he departed Cuba, the pontiff called on its people to live a “revolution of tenderness”.

In the final Mass of his four-day visit to the island, with President Raul Castro attending, he urged thousands of Cubans to serve one another and not an ideology.

On the trip from Cuba to the US, the Pope held a news conference and answered those who said his criticisms of capitalism went too far.

“I’ve never said anything that is not in the social doctrine of the church,” the Pope told reporters.

“Maybe I have given the impression of (being) a bit lefty, but that would be a mistaken interpretation.”

When he landed at Andrews Air Force Base, Pope Francis was greeted by Barack Obama and his family along with Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife.

The crowd, which included a military honor guard, schoolchildren, politicians, and Roman Catholic clergymen, chanted: “Welcome to the USA! Hello! Hey!”

After a brief chat with President Barack Obama, the pope rode away in a small charcoal-gray Fiat as part of a motorcade bound for the Vatican diplomatic mission in Washington.

Authorities have launched one of the biggest security operations in US history to ensure the pope’s safety.

The pontiff, who has sought to bring Catholics back to the church with a more inclusive message, is very popular in the US and is expected to draw massive crowds in all three cities.

A large portion of central Philadelphia will be practically closed off during his visit and federal employees in Washington have been urged to work remotely while Pope Francis is in the capital.

The event could attract up to a million and a half people.

NO.1 S3 Smartwatch Phone : Putting Siri to shame

Smartwatches are all the rage these days. Everyday a new one pops up with the supposed greatest features, greatest connectivity, fastest interface and on and on and on. So how do you sort through the plethora of advertisements? Do research and compare apples to apples. Like any product, not all smartwatches are created equal. The devil is in the details with these devices. Which brings us to the NO. 1 S3 Smartwatch phone. Not just a smartwatch, but a smartwatch phone. Why? Because it has no much functionality you typically find on smartphones. This makes it a lot easier to use.

NO.1 S3 Smartwatch Phone
NO.1 S3 Smartwatch Phone

How it works

The S3 works in a lot of ways. For starters, it isn’t limited to just working with your iOS or Android device as other brands are. It can do what the more expensive models do, but with less damage to your wallet and more connectivity options. Smartwatches are meant to sync with your phone, which the S3 invariable does. But it does this in a number of ways.

The watch seamlessly syncs with your phone and allows you answer calls or dial right from your wrist. On a similar note, it does allow synchronization between things like call logs, messages and even contacts. This allows for you to quickly view these items on your wrist discretely if you need to. The face where you enter commands is very durable; hard and hard to scratch to boot. It’s pretty comfortable to wear also with a trendy leather strap.

Extra Features

It boasts a litany of extra features that you’ll be hard pressed to find elsewhere. It has a pedometer if you want to monitor your steps for exercise. It can also keep track of your sleep health by monitoring sleep quality while you take your nightly snooze. The S3 will also monitor your heart rate if you want to keep track during exercise. No need to hook up a separate device; just glance at your wrist.

Aside from the health monitoring bonuses, it has interesting additions like an alarm, stop watch and remote capture. The last bit is particularly interesting. It allows you to control the phone’s camera as long as the camera is selected on the phones interface. So next time you want a family picture, you can take it yourself, right from your wrist, with the phone across the room.

All the things the S3 does sound awesome, but it’s the price that’s the kicker. The device wouldn’t be a boon to consumers without competitive pricing. Luckily it does have a shockingly reasonable price. You can get it for under $60 here and receive fast and free shipping as the icing on this techno-cake. By the way, the Apple Watch starts at $350 and about 200 of that is just for the Apple name. You can do better. Just saying.

Refugee Crisis: EU Approves Controversial Quota Plan

EU home affairs ministers have approved a controversial plan to relocate 120,000 migrants across Europe over the next two years.

It will see refugees moved from Italy, Greece and Hungary to other EU countries.

Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and the Czech Republic voted against accepting mandatory quotas.

After the vote, Slovakia’s prime minister said he would not accept the new quotas.EU refugee quota plan 2015

Finland abstained from the vote. Poland, which had opposed the proposal, voted for it.

It is highly unusual for an issue like this – which involves national sovereignty – to be decided by majority vote rather than unanimous decision.

The matter must now be ratified by EU leaders in Brussels on September 23.

Earlier in the day, the Czech government warned that the plan was unlikely to work, even if it gained approval.

The UN refugee agency said the scheme would be insufficient, given the large numbers arriving in Europe.

“A relocation program alone, at this stage in the crisis, will not be enough to stabilize the situation,” UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said.

The number of those needing relocation will probably have to be revised upwards significantly, she said.

Pope Francis Celebrates Final Mass of Cuba Trip Before Heading to US

Pope Francis celebrated the final Mass of his four-day visit to Cuba, calling on Cubans to live a “revolution of tenderness”.

The Mass was celebrated at Cuba’s holiest shrine, the sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre.

Pope Francis then left for the United States, where he will address both houses of Congress.

The Pope has avoided any overt political statements during his visit to Cuba.

Commentators say the pontiff is expected to be more outspoken while in the US.

In Washington DC he will hold the first-ever canonization mass on US soil and then give the first address to Congress by a pope.Pope Francis El Cobre Mass

Pope Francis will then head to New York City for the 70th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly.

The final leg of Pope Francis’ US tour is Philadelphia where the pontiff will preside over the Vatican’s World Meeting of Families.

It is being billed as one of the largest events in Philadelphia in modern times and could attract up to a million and half people.

During his time in Cuba, Pope Francis asked Cubans to follow the example set by the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre “to build bridges, to break down walls, to sow seeds of reconciliation”.

The Virgin symbolizes Cuba’s mixed Spanish and African roots.

Alluding to Cuba’s 1959 Communist revolution which brought Fidel Castro to power, Pope Francis said: “Our revolution comes about through tenderness, through the joy which always becomes closeness and compassion, which isn’t pain, and leads us to get involved in, and to serve, the life of others.”

During the trip, there have been complaints from some Cuban dissidents that Pope Francis did not receive them to hear their concerns about human rights on the island.

The Vatican said such a meeting was never on the agenda.

Refugee Crisis: EU Home Affairs Ministers Try to Solve Mandatory Quotas Dispute

EU ministers are meeting in Brussels to try to resolve a dispute over how to relocate 120,000 refugees who have recently arrived in Europe.

Some central European states have resisted calls for EU members to accept mandatory quotas.

Whatever is decided, the UN says the EU’s plans will not be enough.

The refugees are part of 500,000 to have arrived by sea this year so far. Germany says it expects at least 800,000 this year.

The arrival of hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers has created deep EU divisions.

Home affairs ministers meeting in Brussels on September 22 are hoping to reach agreement which would be ratified by EU leaders on September 23.EU refugee crisis 2015

Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland all oppose the idea of obligatory quotas, promoted by Germany which has accepted large numbers of migrants.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said two weeks ago that mandatory quotas were “a first step” towards a more permanent scheme to deal with the influx.

However, mandatory quotas have now been dropped, diplomats say, and a voluntary relocation scheme is now on the table.

Most of those arriving in the EU are from war-torn Syria, the European Commission says.

The relocation scheme would prioritize refugees recognized as “in need of international protection” – those from Syria, Eritrea and Iraq, according to EU data.

The 120,000 would be transferred from Hungary, Greece and Italy – the states where most migrants have been entering the EU.

The UK, under an opt-out, would not be part of the relocation scheme but has already agreed to take 20,000 refugees directly from countries bordering Syria over the next five years.

The Irish Republic and Denmark, with similar opt-outs, have agreed to take part in the EU scheme.

The UN Refugee Agency has warned that the relocation scheme will be insufficient given the large numbers arriving in Europe.

“A relocation program alone, at this stage in the crisis, will not be enough to stabilize the situation,” spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said.

The number of those needing to be relocated will probably need to be revised upwards significantly, she said.

Newcomers continued arriving in southern Europe on September 22 in the hope of making their way north to Germany and Scandinavia.

Hundreds are crossing the Hungarian border into Austria – and about 4,000 are reaching the Greek island of Lesbos every day.

Ahmed Mohamed Withdraws from MacArthur High School

0

Ahmed Mohamed, the Muslim teenager arrested after a homemade clock he brought to his school was mistaken for a bomb, has quit MacArthur High School in Texas, his family says.

The boy’s father, Mohamed El-Hassan Mohamed, said he had pulled all his children from schools in the area.

According to Mohamed El-Hassan Mohamed, the arrest had a harmful effect on his 14-year-old boy.

Ahmed Mohamed’s arrest has been sharply criticized and the charges against him were quickly dropped.Ahmed Mohamed withdraws from high school

The boy was arrested at MacArthur High School in Irving, after officials thought the device he brought to school was a “hoax bomb”.

“Ahmed said: <<I don’t want to go to MacArthur>>,” Mohamed El-Hassan Mohamed told The Dallas Morning News on September 22.

“These kids aren’t going to be happy there.”

Ahmed Mohamed has received numerous enrolment offers from schools, his father said, adding that he wanted to give him a break before making a decision.

The entire family is set to fly to New York on September 23 where United Nations dignitaries want to meet Ahmed Mohamed.

After that, Mohamed El-Hassan Mohamed hopes to take his son on a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

“I ask Allah to bless this time. After that, we’ll see,” the father said.

When they return, they plan to visit the White House to meet President Barack Obama, he said.

Ahmed Mohamed announced his plans to transfer schools at a news conference last week.

He told reporters it was “very sad” that his teacher thought his clock was a threat.

Ahmed Mohamed’s arrest has been sharply criticized, and the boy has received an outpouring of support including an invitation to the White House.

VW Emissions Scandal Affects 11 Million Vehicles Worldwide

0

At least 11 million vehicles worldwide are affected by the scandal that has erupted over Volkswagen’s rigging of US car emissions tests, the company said.

The carmaker said it was setting aside €6.5 billion to cover costs of the scandal.

VW added this would pay for “necessary service measures and other efforts to win back the trust of our customers”.

Volkswagen CEO Michael Horn has admitted it “totally screwed up” in using software to rig emissions tests.

VW shares were down more than 20% on September 22 in Frankfurt.

On September 18, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said VW diesel cars had much higher emissions than tests had suggested and that software in several diesel cars could deceive regulators.

“Volkswagen does not tolerate any kind of violation of laws whatsoever,” the carmaker said in its latest statement.

VW said provision for the scandal would be made “in the profit and loss statement in the third quarter of the current fiscal year”.

It added: “Due to the ongoing investigations, the amounts estimated may be subject to revaluation.”

French Finance Minister Michel Sapin has called for an EU inquiry, but a UK car industry spokesman said there was “no evidence” of cheating.

However, he also described current testing methods as “outdated” and said the car industry wanted an updated emissions test, “more representative of on-road conditions”.

Minister Michel Sapin said inquiries in Europe had to be conducted “at a European level”.

“We are a European market with European rules,” he told Europe 1 radio.

“It is these that have to be respected. It is these that have been violated in the United States.”

The French carmakers’ federation backed Michel Sapin’s call, saying such an inquiry would “allow us to confirm that French carmakers respect the procedures for approval in all of the countries where they operate”.

However, a European Commission spokeswoman said it was “premature to comment on whether any specific immediate surveillance measures are also necessary in Europe”.VW Dieselgate emissions scandal

Elsewhere, the South Korean government said it would test up to 5,000 Jetta and Golf cars, along with Audi A3s made in 2014 and 2015.

Its investigation will be expanded to all German diesel cars if issues are found.

The White House in Washington also reportedly said it was “quite concerned” about VW’s conduct.

Volkswagen was ordered to recall half a million cars in the US on September 18.

In addition to paying for the recall, VW faces fines that could add up to billions of dollars. There may also be criminal charges for VW executives.

In its latest statement, VW said it was “working at full speed to clarify irregularities” concerning what it called “a particular software used in diesel engines”.

The EPA found the “defeat device”, the device that allowed VW cars to emit less during tests than they would while driving normally, in diesel cars including the Audi A3 and the VW Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat models.

VW has stopped selling the relevant diesel models in the US, where diesel cars account for about a quarter of its sales.

The EPA said that the fine for each vehicle that did not comply with federal clean air rules would be up to $37,500. With 482,000 cars sold since 2008 involved in the allegations, it means the fines could reach $18 billion.

VW has ordered an external investigation, although it has not revealed who will be conducting it.

Burkina Faso Troops Arrive in Ouagadougou Seeking Coup Leader Surrender

0

Burkina Faso’s army has arrived in the country’s capital, Ouagadougou, seeking the surrender of coup leader, General Gilbert Diendere.

Negotiations between army chiefs and the presidential guard have stalled, a senior military officer said.

Troops are moving through the capital, as the deadline to Gen. Gilbert Diendere to surrender passed.

Gilbert Diendere staged a coup last week after opposing moves to integrate the presidential guard into the army.

He has released the president and the prime minister, following talks brokered by mediators.

The coup has been widely condemned, with the African Union suspending Burkina Faso’s membership.Burkina Faso army gives coup leader ultimatum

Gilbert Diendere says he will step aside once regional leaders, due to meet in Nigeria, endorse a peace plan, including an amnesty for coup plotters.

Burkina Faso’s PM Isaac Zida was captured by the presidential guard in last week’s coup.

France’s ambassador to Burkina Faso, Gilles Thibault, has also tweeted that interim President Michel Kafando, who was arrested on September 16, has been released from house arrest and is now at the ambassador’s residence.

Speaking from a secret location, Gen. Gilbert Diendere said: “Ready to surrender? We are not there yet… We wish to continue the discussions and we say to all that we are ready to implement Ecowas’ [West African regional group’s] decisions.”

He also apologized to the population, saying an apology was “the least we could do”.

The Ecowas plan should be discussed by West African heads of state in Nigeria on September 22.

The presidential guard is loyal to ousted President Blaise Compaore and installed Gen. Gilbert Diendere as the new leader last week.

Since then, at least 10 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in clashes.

Burkina Faso’s army ordered the presidential guard to disarm before it marched on the capital.

“We must now secure the surrender of the [coup leaders] without gunfire or bloodshed,” Col. Serge Alain Ouedraogo, of the Burkinabe police, told AFP.

Ecowas’ plan includes the return to civilian government, an amnesty for the soldiers behind the coup and elections by the end of November.

Gilbert Diendere, who was the chief of staff to Blaise Compaore, led the coup a month before elections had been due in Burkina Faso.

Philippines: Foreign Tourists Kidnapped from Samal Island Resort

Two Canadian tourists, a Norwegian hotel manager and a Filipino woman have been kidnapped from a resort in the southern Philippines, the military has said.

An army spokesman said the abductees were taken by gunmen late on September 21 from the Holiday Oceanview resort on Samal Island, near Davao City on Mindanao.

The attackers, who have not been identified by police, left by boat, Capt. Alberto Caber told reporters.

He said it appeared the four were targeted rather than taken at random.

Since the 1990s the southern Philippines has seen sporadic incidents of kidnapping by Muslim militant groups, who hold hostages for ransom.

Philippine authorities have named the Canadians as John Ridsel and Robert Hall.Tourists kidnapped in Philippines

The Norwegian, Kjartan Sekkingstad, was said to be the manager of the resort.

The Filipino woman has not been identified, but she is said to be the partner of one of the kidnapped Canadians.

Authorities also said two Japanese tourists had tried to intervene to prevent the kidnapping, which took place shortly before midnight.

The Associated Press quoted Capt. Alberto Caber as saying a naval blockade was being set up around the island to stop kidnappers from reaching another island in the southwest known to house militant strongholds.

Philippine authorities signed a peace agreement with the largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, in 2014, but continue to battle smaller groups in the south.

The region where Samal is located has been largely peaceful in recent years. The last related incident on Samal took place in 2001 when Islamist separatist group Abu Sayyaf attempted to kidnap tourists at another resort.

The group is holding a number of foreign hostages in various remote camps.

Venezuela-Colombia Border to Reopen After Ecuador Talks

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, have agreed to gradually reopen their common border after talks in Ecuador.

Venezuela closed the Colombian border a month ago and launched a major anti-smuggling operation.

Nicolas Maduro says smuggling has led to shortages in parts of Venezuela.

Meeting in Ecuador, Nicolas Maduro and Juan Manuel Santos also said they would return ambassadors to each other’s capitals immediately.

Some 20,000 Colombians have left Venezuela since the crisis began.

More than 1,500 of them were evicted due to alleged connections with criminal gangs operating in the area.Venezuela Colombia border dispute

Most of the others fled in fear, many carrying their personal belongings over the border rivers.

“Common sense, dialogue and peace between our peoples and our countries have triumphed today,” said Nicolas Maduro after the talks in Quito.

For his part, Juan Manuel Santos said Venezuela “should have respected the rights of Colombians” who had to leave the country and return over the border.

The Colombian leader added: “I agree that criminal organizations working in the border area is a big problem, but the best way to deal with it is by working together.”

Most crossings were closed and some 3,000 Venezuelan troops have been deployed along the border since Nicolas Maduro launched a major anti-smuggling operation 19 August.

For many years, heavily subsidized items from Venezuela, including cheap petrol, have been sold at huge profit over the border in Colombia.

Nicolas Maduro says smuggling has led to shortages in the west of Venezuela and other parts of the country.

The talks on September 21 were facilitated by Uruguayan President Tabare Vasquez and his Ecuadorean counterpart, Rafael Correa.

The summit was preceded by two meetings between the Colombian and the Venezuelan foreign ministers.

Stewart Parnell Jailed for 28 Years over Salmonella Outbreak

Ex-peanut company executive Stewart Parnell has been jailed for 28 years for his role in a national salmonella outbreak linked to nine deaths.

Stewart Parnell, 61, the ex-owner of the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), was convicted in 2014 of knowingly shipping tainted products.

His brother Michael, who worked as a food broker, was given 20 years.

The outbreak made hundreds ill and prompted one of the largest food recalls in US history.Stewart Parnell jailed over salmonella outbreak

Stewart and Michael Parnell were charged after investigators traced the outbreak to the company’s plant in Blakely, Georgia in 2009.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said those who died had eaten tainted peanut butter, but could not say for certain that salmonella caused the deaths.

Inspectors found a leaky roof, cockroaches, and evidence of rats at the plant.

Prosecutors accused managers of creating fake certificates saying the food was safe when it either had not been tested or had been found to be contaminated.

“These acts were driven simply by the desire to profit,” Judge Louis Sands said.

“This is commonly and accurately referred to as greed.”

A former quality control manager at the plant, Mary Wilkerson, was also sentenced to 5 years in prison.

During the trial, Stewart Parnell apologized and asked for forgiveness, saying: “I am personally embarrassed, humiliated and morally disgraced by what happened.”

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, headaches, stomach cramps and fever, with infants and the elderly particularly at risk of developing a serious infection.

Hillary Clinton to Unveil Plan to Lower Prescription Drug Prices

0

Democrat presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton will unveil a plan to rein in prescription drug costs by forcing pharmaceutical companies to reinvest their profits into research and allowing for more generic and imported drugs.

The proposal, which Hillary Clinton will outline in a speech in Iowa on September 22, would also allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug costs and cap out-of-pocket expenses, according to details of the plan sent out by her campaign team.

The plan seeks to address a key shortcoming of ObamaCare, President Barack Obama’s signature health law, as Hillary Clinton aims to show how she would put her imprint on it.Hillary Clinton prescription drug plan

On September 21, Hillary Clinton sent out a tweet referencing a New York Times article about Daraprim, a drug to treat toxoplasmosis that increased in price overnight from $13.50 to $750 per tablet.

“Price gouging like this in the specialty drug market is outrageous. Tomorrow I’ll lay out a plan to take it on,” Hillary Clinton said.

US pharmaceuticals companies charge Americans thousands of dollars for new drugs that are often priced lower in other developed nations while receiving billions of taxpayer dollars for basic research, according to the campaign.

The prescription drug plan is part of a broader focus on health care this week.

On September 23, Hillary Clinton will outline a separate set of proposals to address other out-of-pocket health costs that patients face.

According to the campaign, Hillary Clinton’s plan will propose to:

  • Deny tax breaks for consumer advertising and demand that drug companies instead invest US taxpayer dollars in research and development. Many companies benefit from corporate write-offs for advertising aimed specifically at consumers. Companies that receive federal funds would be required to reinvest a certain amount in research.
  • Encourage the production of generic drugs including lowering the amount of time companies can exclusively produce new treatments.
  • Cap what insurers can charge consumers with chronic or serious health conditions in out-of-pocket costs. Health insurance plans would place a monthly limit of $250 on out-of-pocket costs for such patients.
  • Allow Americans to import drugs from abroad. Countries in Europe with similar safety standards often pay half of what American pay for the same drugs, according to the campaign.
  • Allow Medicare to negotiate drug and biologic prices, especially for high-cost drugs with limited competition.

Turing CEO Martin Shkreli Defends Decision to Raise Daraprim Price by 5,000%

Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli has defended his company’s decision to raise the price of 62-year-old medication used by AIDS patients, Daraprim, by over 5,000%.

The company acquired the rights to Daraprim in August.

Martin Shkreli has said that Turing will use the money it makes from sales to research new treatments.

Daraprim is used treat toxoplasmosis, a parasitic affliction that affects people with compromised immune systems.

After Turing’s acquisition, a dose of Daraprim in the US increased from $13.50 to $750.Turing Pharmaceuticals and Daraprim price

The pill costs about $1 to produce, but Martin Shkreli, a former hedge fund manager, said that does not include other costs like marketing and distribution.

“We needed to turn a profit on this drug,” Martin Shkreli told Bloomberg TV.

“The companies before us were just giving it away almost.”

On Twitter, Martin Shkreli mocked several users who questioned the company’s decision, calling one reporter “a moron”.

The Infectious Diseases Society of America, the HIV Medicine Association and other health care providers wrote an open letter to Turning, urging the company to reconsider.

“This cost is unjustifiable for the medically vulnerable patient population in need of this medication and unsustainable for the health care system,” the groups wrote.

Dr. Wendy Armstrong of HIV Medicine Association also disputed the need to develop new treatments for toxoplasmosis.

“This is not an infection where we have been looking for more effective drugs,” she told Infectious Disease News.

On Wall Street, Turing shares fell sharply on September 21 after Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton pledged to take action against firms hiking prices for specialty drugs.

“Price gouging like this in the specialty drug market is outrageous,” Hillary Clinton said, citing Daraprim.

Refugee Crisis: Hungary PM Viktor Orban Says Europe’s Borders Are Threatened by Migration

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has said Europe’s borders are threatened by migration, at the start of a week of intense diplomatic activity on the crisis.

Viktor Orban said refugees were “breaking the doors” and that a united stance was required.

Ministers from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia met to discuss an EU proposal for quotas, which they oppose.

Some EU countries want refugees shared out more evenly across the EU.Hungary refugee crisis 2015

Germany and France are among those who back plans to share the burden of relocating 120,000 migrants from Greece, Italy and Hungary.

“They are over-running us,” said Viktor Orban, shortly before Hungary’s parliament agreed to hand more powers to the army.

“They’re not just banging on the door, they’re breaking the doors down on top of us. Our borders are under threat. Hungary is under threat and so is the whole of Europe.”

The new law allows Hungary’s army to use rubber bullets, tear gas and net guns to control migrants at its border.

Police would also now be allowed to enter private homes to search for people they believed had entered Hungary illegally, the AFP reported.

Viktor Orban, whose stance on immigration has drawn heavy criticism from European colleagues, made the comments at the start of a week of critical talks.

VW Emissions Scandal: CEO Martin Winterkorn to Support German Transport Ministry Investigation

0

Volkswagen will “support” the German transport ministry’s investigation into the automaker’s emissions scandal, CEO Martin Winterkorn has said.

VW shares plunged more than 18% on September 21 after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that some of its cars could manipulate official emissions tests.

The EPA found that software in several diesel cars could deceive regulators.

VW was ordered to recall half a million cars in the US on September 18.

In addition to paying for the recall, VW faces fines that could add up to billions of dollars. There may also be criminal charges for VW executives.

The White House in Washington also reportedly said it was “quite concerned” about VW’s conduct.

Martin Winterkorn apologized after the scandal emerged.VW emissions scandal Martin Winterkorn

“I personally am deeply sorry that we have broken the trust of our customers and the public,” he said.

He has launched an investigation into the software that allowed VW cars to emit less during tests than they would while driving normally.

The EPA found the “defeat device” in diesel cars including the Audi A3 and the VW Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat models.

VW has stopped selling the relevant diesel models in the US, where diesel cars account for about a quarter of sales.

The EPA said that the fine for each vehicle that did not comply with federal clean air rules would be up to $37,500. With 482,000 cars sold since 2008 involved in the allegations, it means the fines could reach $18 billion.

Volkswagen has ordered an external investigation, although it has not revealed who will be conducting it.

“We do not and will not tolerate violations of any kind of our internal rules or of the law,” Martin Winterkorn said.

The scandal comes five months after former VW chairman Ferdinand Piech left the company following disagreements with Martin Winterkorn.

“This disaster is beyond all expectations,” Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the Centre of Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, said.

The VW board is due to meet on September 25 to decide whether to renew Martin Winterkorn’s contract until 2018, and some analysts speculated he may be on his way out.

VW had been promoting its diesel cars in the US as being better for the environment.

Class action law firm Hagens Berman is launching a suit against VW on behalf of people who bought the relevant cars.

“While Volkswagen tells consumers that its diesel cars meet California emissions standards, vehicle owners are duped into paying for vehicles that do not meet this standard and unknowingly pay more for quality they never receive,” Hagens Berman alleged.

Ben Carson Under Fire After Islam Remarks

0

Muslim-American groups and others are calling for Ben Carson to quit the 2016 race after the Republican presidential hopeful said a Muslim should not be president.

The groups have said these views make him unqualified to run himself.

Dr. Ben Carson, a Christian, made the comments on September 20, adding that Islam was inconsistent with the Constitution.

Another Republican presidential candidate, Bobby Jindal, said on September 21 a Muslim president should swear on a Bible to uphold the Constitution.

Bobby Jindal said a Muslim Republican who fought to protect religious liberty, respected the Judeo-Christian heritage of the US and was committed to destroying Islamic State and radical Islam, and condemned cultures that treated women as second class citizens would get his vote.

But they must “place their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution”, he added.

The Republican candidates for president are being asked about their views on Islam since Donald Trump failed last week to correct a supporter who said President Barack Obama was a Muslim.

Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner, has since said he would have no problem appointing a Muslim to his cabinet.

In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Ben Carson said the president’s faith matters if it differs with the values of America.

“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” he said.

Ben Carson elaborated later when he told The Hill: “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”

Democrats immediately denounced his remarks and Muslim groups called on Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who is riding high in the polls among Republican voters, to quit the race.

“To me this really means he is not qualified to be president of the United States,” said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Ibrahim Hooper noted that the US Constitution specifically does not require the president to have a certain religion.

Farhana Khera of Muslim Advocates said the “religious bigotry” was heard when JFK was hoping to be the first Catholic president.

Haroon Moghul, a leading commentator on Islam, told CNN: “I think Carson’s comments mean he should get out of the race.”

One of the latest polls, run by CNN/ORC, shows Ben Carson has slipped into third place in the Republican race, trailing former Hewlett-Packard chief Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump, who has consistently remained ahead of the pack.

Senior Republicans had said after the 2012 election that if the party did not become more inclusive, it would continue to push away young voters.

Kim Dotcom’s Extradition Hearing Begins in New Zealand

0

Kim Dotcom’s extradition hearing has begun in Auckland, New Zealand.

The US is seeking to extradite the German-born internet entrepreneur, and three of his colleagues, for alleged copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering.

In 2012, New Zealand’s authorities raided Kim Dotcom’s Auckland home and shut down his site Megaupload.

Megaupload once had millions of users storing files and downloading movies and songs.Kim Dotcom extradition hearing

US authorities say Kim Dotcom and the other executives cost film studios and record companies more than $500 million and generated $175 million by allowing users to store and share copyright material.

In order to trigger an extradition treaty between the US and New Zealand, the prosecution must prove that a crime was committed in both countries.

The hearing, to which Kim Dotcom brought his own chair for ergonomic reasons, is expected to last weeks.

“This case is not just about me. This case is about how much control we allow US corporations and the US government to have over the Internet,” Kim Dotcom said on Twitter before proceedings began.

China Stock Market Trades Higher as Rest of Asia Falls

China stock market was the lone winner in Asia on September 21 as the rest of the region headed lower on lingering worries about weaker global growth.

The Shanghai Composite ended up 1.9% to 3,156.54 despite the Federal Reserve’s decision to hold off raising interest rates last week, in part due to a slowing Chinese economy.

Chinese shares in small-cap companies rebounded strongly, making up for recent losses.China stock market trades higher

Meanwhile Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed down 0.8% to 21,756.93 points.

Trading was also lighter than usual with the region’s biggest market, Japan, closed until September 23 for public holidays.

In the meantime, investors are looking ahead to flash manufacturing activity readings from China and the euro zone on Wednesday for an indication on where the global economy is heading.

In Australia, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index closed down 2% to 5,066.2 – leading the region’s losses.

South Korea’s Kospi finished down 1.6% to 1,964.68 after hitting a five and a half week high in the previous session.

The benchmark index also ended a four-day winning streak.

Volkswagen Apologizes for Falsifying Emissions Data

0

Volkswagen has apologized after US regulators found some of its cars disguised pollution levels.

VW CEO Martin Winterkorn said: “I personally am deeply sorry that we have broken the trust of our customers and the public.”

He has launched an investigation into the device that allowed VW cars to emit less during tests than they would while driving normally.

The German automaker’s shares were down 19% in Frankfurt by lunchtime.

Volkswagen was ordered to recall half a million cars on September 18.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the “defeat device” in diesel cars including the Audi A3, VW Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat models.

In addition to paying for the recall, VW faces fines that could add up to billions of dollars. There may also be criminal charges for VW executives.

The EPA said that the fine for each vehicle that did not comply with federal clean air rules would be up to $37,500. With 482,000 cars sold since 2008 involved in the allegations, it means the fines could reach $18 billion.Volkswagen emissions data

That would be a considerable amount, even for the company that recently overtook Toyota to be the world’s top-selling vehicle maker in the first six months of the year. Its stock market value is about €66 billion ($75 billion).

The company has stopped selling the relevant diesel models in the US, where diesel cars account for about a quarter of sales.

It has ordered an external investigation, although it has not revealed who will be conducting it.

“We do not and will not tolerate violations of any kind of our internal rules or of the law,” Martin Winterkorn said.

The German government said on September 21 it would rely on the US authorities to assess whether VW had done anything wrong in Europe.

“We expect the car companies to pass on reliable information so that the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the responsible authority in this case, can investigate whether similar manipulations took place with the emissions systems in Germany and Europe,” a spokesman for the German environment ministry said.

The scandal comes five months after former chairman Ferdinand Piech left Volkswagen following disagreements with Martin Winterkorn.

The VW board is due to meet on September 25 to decide whether to renew the chief executive’s contract until 2018.

“This disaster is beyond all expectations,” Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the Center of Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, said.

VW had been promoting its diesel cars in the US as being better for the environment.

The US law firm Hagens Berman is launching a class-action suit against VW on behalf of people who bought the relevant cars.

The models cited by Hagens Berman are the diesel versions in the US of:

  • Jetta (2009 – 2015)
  • Beetle (2009 – 2015)
  • Audi A3 (2009 – 2015)
  • Golf (2009 – 2015)
  • Passat (2014 – 2015)

“While Volkswagen tells consumers that its diesel cars meet California emissions standards, vehicle owners are duped into paying for vehicles that do not meet this standard and unknowingly pay more for quality they never receive,” Hagens Berman alleged.

China: Apple’s App Store Hit by XcodeGhost Malware

Apple has announced it is removing a malicious code added to a number of apps commonly used on iPhones and iPads in China.

It is thought to be the first large-scale attack on Apple’s App Store.

The hackers had created a counterfeit version of Apple’s software for building iOS apps, which it persuaded developers to download.

Apps compiled using the software could steal data about the users and send it to servers controlled by the hackers.

In addition, the attackers could send fake alerts to infected devices to trick their owners into revealing passwords and other information.China Apple's App Store Hit by XcodeGhost Malware

The infected applications include Tencent’s hugely popular WeChat app, a music downloading app and an Uber-like car hailing app.

Some of the affected apps – including the business card scanner CamCard – are also available outside China.

An Apple spokeswoman said apps created using the counterfeit software, XcodeGhost, had now been removed from the App Store.

“We are working with the developers to make sure they’re using the proper version of Xcode to rebuild their apps,” said Christine Monaghan.

On its official WeChat blog, Tencent said the security issue affects an older version of the app – WeChat 6.2.5 and the newest versions were not impacted.

It added that an initial investigation showed that no data theft or leakage of user information had occurred.

Potentially hundreds of millions of users were impacted by the infected apps, experts say.

Earlier this month, login names and passwords for more than 225,000 Apple accounts were stolen by cyber-thieves in China.

The majority of people affected were in China.

Game of Thrones has become the first show to win the most Emmy awards in one night after Sunday’s ceremony held in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Viola Davis has become the first black woman to win the outstanding lead actress in a drama award for her role in How To Get Away With Murder.

The 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards honored the best in US prime time TV programming from June 1, 2014 until May 31, 2015, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Game of Thrones won best drama series and 11 other prizes.

Jon Hamm finally won a best actor award for his role as Don Draper in Mad Men – after seven years of missing out.

Political comedy Veep was the winner in the best comedy series category.

Inside Amy Schumer was named best variety sketch series.

It was the first time since it began 2011 that Game of Thrones won the best drama series award. Its other accolades included best writing, best direction and best supporting actor for Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister.

Amazon’s comedy-drama Transparent won awards for best director in a comedy and for its lead actor, Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgender college professor.

The show also picked up best guest actor in a comedy for Bradley Whitford.

Viola Davis won her Emmy for lead actress in a drama for her role as a tough criminal defense lawyer in ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder.

Accepting her award, Viola Davis said: “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.”

Jon Hamm, who played Don Draper in the drama Mad Men, set in an advertising agency primarily in the 1960s, said: “It’s incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won best comedy actress for the fourth time for playing Selina Meyer on Veep, while Tony Hale, who plays her bag man, was again named best comedy supporting actor.

Veep, which is set in the office of the fictional vice-president and subsequent president of the US, Selina Meyer, also won the comedy writing award and best supporting actor in a comedy (Tony Hale).

Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Netflix prison series Orange is the New Black, was named best supporting actress in a drama.

The TV Academy awarded only four prizes to the main US broadcast networks. But while the pre-awards talk had revolved around streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon, it was cable channel HBO that swept the board, with shows like Veep, Game of Thrones and Olive Kitteridge performing well.

Olive Kitteridge picked up six awards, including best mini-series, best lead actor in a mini-series or movie (Richard Jenkins), lead actress (Frances McDormand) and supporting actor (Bill Murray).
