Portugal Elections 2015: PM Pedro Passos Coelho Poised to Lead Centre-Right Coalition to Victory

Portugal is voting in a parliamentary election that is widely seen as a referendum on four years of spending cuts and market reforms.

The centre-right governing coalition has vowed to continue austerity policies in place since 2011, after it was forced to seek a eurozone bailout.

The Socialists and other left-wing groups have criticized the cuts.

President Anibal Cavaco Silva called for a high turnout on October 4, saying Portugal was facing a crucial moment.

Years of austerity have left Portugal’s electorate deeply split, and with an unusually large number of undecided voters.

Socialist leader Antonio Costa has said that only a vote for his party is a “useful vote” against the government.

The centre-right Social Democratic Party led by PM Pedro Passos Coelho and its right-wing ally, the People’s Party have put up joint lists of candidates in all electoral districts.

Portugal’s unemployment has been falling for two and a half years, but many regard the recovery as fragile.

Chris Harper Mercer: Umpqua Community College Killed Himself as Police Arrived

Chris Harper Mercer, the gunman who killed nine people in a shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, then killed himself as police arrived, officials have said.

At a news conference in Roseburg, they revealed that Chris Harper Mercer, 26, was enrolled in the class where the shooting took place.

They also said that 14 weapons were later found at his home.

Police earlier released the names of the victims, who ranged in age from 18 to 67. The oldest was a teacher.

President Barack Obama on October 2 expressed his anger at gun violence, calling on the public to press their politicians to support reform.

“The medical examiner has determined the cause of death of the shooter to be suicide,” Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters on October 3.

He said that investigators were checking numerous leads and had already interviewed hundreds of people in the area.

On October 1, Chris Harper Mercer – dressed in a flak jacket – brought six guns to Umpqua Community College and opened fire.

The attacker killed eight students and a teacher.

He then killed himself after a gun battle with police officers who arrived at the college.

Chris Harper Mercer enlisted in the army in 2008, but was discharged after less than a month in basic training, for reasons unknown.

It is unclear why he carried out the killings. Two victims have said religion was an issue – the gunman asked his victims to state their religion and shot dead the Christians.

Chris Harper Mercer’s father, Ian Mercer, said he was “just as shocked as everybody” by his son’s actions.

Hurricane Joaquin: El Faro Cargo Ship Vanishes in Bahamas Waters with 33 People Aboard

A cargo ship with 33 crew that vanished in Bahamas’ waters during Hurricane Joaquin, the US Coast Guard says.

The 735ft El Faro, with 28 Americans and five Poles on board, was last heard from on October 1 and was reported to be taking on water.

The ship – which was travelling from Florida to Puerto Rico – was also believed to be listing at 15 degrees.

Joaquin brought heavy rains to the Bahamas, damaging a number of houses.

There have been no reports of casualties so far.El Faro cargo ship Hurricane Joaquin

The now-weaker Category Four storm – with sustained winds of up to 130mph – is moving away from the island nation in the Atlantic.

US officials said they believed any threat to the East Coast was fading.

“We’re going to go and try and save lives,” Coast Guard Cpt. Mark Fedor said on October 3, Associated Press reported.

“We’re going to push it to the operational limits as far as we can.”

Cpt. Mark Fedor added that waves of up to nine meters and heavy winds could have destroyed El Faro’s communications equipment.

The Coast Guard said it had already covered more than 850 sq miles in the search for the vessel.

El Faro’s owner, Florida-based TOTE Services, said it was working together with the Coast Guard to try to re-establish contact with the ship.

Air France Plans to Cut 2,900 Jobs After Pilot Talks Break Down

Air France-KLM is reportedly planning to cut 2,900 jobs after talks with pilots unions were unsuccessful.

The airline would not confirm the number of cuts, but said it would present a cost-cutting plan on October 5.

Profits at Air France have been hit in part by strikes by pilots, who have been protesting over the expansion of its budget subsidiary.

It also faces stiff competition from low-cost rivals as well as airlines in the Middle East.

Air France said after a board meeting that it had decided to implement a new restructuring plan in order to accelerate its recovery.Air France KLM job cut

“Facing the impossibility of reaching an agreement to implement the productivity measures within Air France and restore long-term profitability, the board members consider it essential to introduce an alternative plan and have unanimously agreed to mandate Air France-KLM and Air France Management to carry this out,” the company said in a statement.

The plan will be presented to the Works Council on October 5.

Union sources leaked the planned job cuts to reporters at two news agencies.

The unions also said the restructuring could include retiring five long haul planes next summer and nine others in 2017.

One official is quoted as saying: “These points were presented to the board for information, but no vote has been taken.”

Air France merged with Dutch KLM in 2004.

Hillary Clinton Email Scandal: Russian-Linked Hackers Sent Five Emails Containing Malware

The private email account used by Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state was targeted by Russia-based hackers, newly released emails show.

Hillary Clinton received at least five emails containing malware.

The “phishing” emails, disguised as speeding tickets, would have enabled the hackers to control her computer.

The infected computer would have sent information to at least three computers overseas, including one in Russia.

A spokesman for HillaryClinton said there was no evidence of a breach.

The hacking attempts were included in thousands of emails released by the State Department.

Hillary Clinton’s opponents have accused her of putting US security at risk by using an unsecured computer system.

The Democrat presidential hopeful says no classified information was sent or received.

The five emails, sent over a four-hour period in August 2011, show hackers had Hillary Clinton’s email address, which was not public, and contained a virus concealed as a speeding ticket from New York state, where she lives.

The email containing instructions to open and print the speeding ticket misspelled the name of the city concerned, Chatham, came from a supposed New York City government account and contained a “Ticket.zip” file of the kind usually picked up by commercial antivirus software.

Nick Merrill, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, said there was no evidence to suggest she replied to the emails or opened the attachment.

“All these emails show is that, like millions of other Americans, she received spam,” he said.

The state department disclosed that Hillary Clinton used a private server during her time as secretary of state (between 2009 and 2013) after journalists requested copies of her government emails.

Hillary Clinton has admitted that her decision to use a private email server at her New York home was a mistake.

However, the latest set of her emails to be released also reveal frustration within the State Department at the technology it was using while she was in office.

In one email exchange Hillary Clinton’s then head of policy Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote that the department’s technology was “so antiquated” that high-level officials “routinely end up using their home email accounts to be able to get their work done quickly and effectively”.

Anne-Marie Slaughter suggested writing an opinion piece to highlight the problem and Hillary Clinton agreed the idea “made good sense”, but her chief of staff Cheryl Mills warned against “telegraphing” how often senior officials relied on their private email accounts to do government business because it could encourage hackers.

US Economy Adds 142,000 Jobs in September 2015

According to the Labor Department figures, the US economy added only 142,000 jobs in September 2015, lowering the chance of an interest rate rise this year.

The number of jobs created in September was far lower than the 205,000 increase forecast by economists.

The July and August figures were revised down by a combined 59,000.

On October 2, Wall Street opened sharply lower, with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indexes both down about 1.3%.

However, both indexes later recovered to be up about 0.5% and 0.6% respectively.

The poor figures also resulted in a rollercoaster ride for the FTSE 100, which ended the day up 0.9% at 6,129.9 points despite also turning negative in afternoon trading.US jobs September 2015

The Labor Department numbers reinforced fears that the China-led global economic slowdown is hitting America’s recovery, adding to doubt about whether the Federal Reserve will raise rates before 2016.

The number of new jobs for August was cut by 37,000 to 136,000 – in sharp contrast to the upward revision expected by economists.

The July total was also reduced, by 22,000 to 245,000.

The number of new jobs created in the US has averaged 198,000 a month for 2014 – below last year’s average of 260,000.

However, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.1%.

The jobless rate, which is derived from a separate survey of households, was unchanged only because 350,000 workers stopped looking for work last month and were no longer counted as part of the labor force.

The proportion of Americans who either have a job or are looking for one fell to a 38-year low, partly reflecting retirements of older workers from the baby boomer generation.

Average hourly wages fell by 1 cent to $25.09 during the month and were only 2.2% higher than the same month in 2014.

The data also knocked the dollar lower, with the pound rising 0.6% to $1.5238 after the numbers were released. Yields on government bonds also fell.

VW Emissions Scandal: Italy Opens Inquiry over Rigged Tests

Italian authorities have opened an inquiry into Volkswagen over the rigging of emissions tests.

Italy’s competition watchdog said it had received several complaints from consumer groups against VW.

Earlier, the Paris prosecutor told Reuters it was investigating suspicions of “aggravated deception”.

Last month VW admitted that 11 million of its vehicles were fitted with devices that allowed them to cheat emissions tests.

VW shares fell 4.5% to a four-year-low on October 2, adding to a 44% plunge since the scandal began.

The German automaker faces fines of up to $18 billion in the US and has already put aside €6.5 billion to cover the cost of the scandal.VW emissions scandal Italy

“Consumers may have been misled in their purchasing decisions by the claims used by Volkswagen on emissions,” Italy’s competition authority said.

The investigation relates to cars sold between 2009 and 2015 under the VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda brands.

VW has said 650,000 of its vehicles in Italy were equipped with the cheat software and that it would begin to inform owners.

Separately, Swiss road authorities put a ban on the sale of new VW diesel cars, as well as imported used vehicles.

That follows news that UK sales of 4,000 vehicles, including Skoda, Audi and Seat brands, thought to be fitted with the cheat device, had been suspended.

However, UK transport authorities said that customers who had unwittingly bought VW cars with the defeat device would not face higher motor tax.

UK motor tax is partly based on the amount of emission released by a vehicle.

In the United States, VW has also stopped the sale of all new diesel cars.

The European Consumer Organization has written an open letter to new VW CEO Matthias Muller, urging the company to take quick action to restore consumer trust.

Its director Monique Goyens wrote: “VW’s actions have deeply shaken the trust of consumers in their cars, if not in an entire industry. Millions of car owners have truck-loads of questions about what this sham means for their own vehicle. We want VW to come clean and rebuild confidence with concrete steps.”

Study: Taller People at Higher Risk of Breast Cancer and Melanoma

0

According to a new study, taller people have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer and skin cancer, among other cancers.

The Swedish study of five million people appears to support the theory that height and cancer risk are linked.

Its results found that for every extra 4in of height, when fully grown, the risk of developing cancer increased by 18% in women and 11% in men.

However, experts said the study did not take into account many risk factors and that tall people should not be worried.

They said that to reduce risk of cancer, the most important things to do are: giving up smoking, cutting down on alcohol, adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Photo Getty Images
Photo Getty Images

Previous studies have shown a link between height and an increased risk of developing cancer, although why it exists is not known.

In a preliminary report of the study, presented at the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology conference, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm describe how they tracked a large group of Swedish adults for more than 50 years.

Taller women had a 20% greater risk of developing breast cancer, they said, while taller men and women increased their risk of skin cancer (or melanoma) by 30%.

This study’s early findings are very similar in size to those found by other studies.

Dr. Emelie Benyi, who led the study, said the results could help to identify risk factors that could lead to the development of treatments.

She added: “As the cause of cancer is multi-factorial, it is difficult to predict what impact our results have on cancer risk at the individual level.”

Although it is clear that adult height is not a cause of cancer, it is thought to be a marker for other factors related to childhood growth.

Scientists say taller people have more growth factors, which could encourage cancer development, they have more cells in their body because of their size, which increases the risk of one of them turning cancerous, and a higher food intake, which also makes them more at risk of cancer.

Guatemala Mudslide: Dozens of People Killed, Hundreds Still Missing

Hundreds of people are missing in Guatemala after a mudslide hit a village not far from the country’s capital.

At least 26 bodies have so far been recovered from the village of El Cambray Dos, rescue services say.

Heavy rains swept a torrent of boulders and mud onto houses on October 1, nine miles east of Guatemala City.

Relatives have been receiving calls and texts from people trapped under the rubble, reporters at the scene say.

Survivors have been taken to makeshift shelters. Rescuers temporarily called off the search on October 2 because of heavy rains, AP reports.

Julio Sanchez, a spokesman for Guatemala’s volunteer firefighters, said 26 people had died, including a number of children, and another 36 people were taken to hospitals.

One man was pulled alive from the rubble after more than 15 hours after the mudslide hit.

Acting President Alejandro Maldonado has warned that as many as 600 people could still be missing.

He said that number of people was believed to be asleep in their homes when the mudslide occurred, he added.

El Cambray Dos is surrounded by steep hills that tower over the houses which are mostly set in the valley bottom.

Alejandro Maldonado said in a radio interview that the forested hills had been weakening for some time and had collapsed largely because of recent heavy rain.

Robin Williams’ Estate: Widow and Kids Reach Settlement

Susan Williams and Robin Williams’ three children from previous marriages reached a settlement in their legal fight over the late actor’s estate, attorneys for the two sides said on October 2.

Jim Wagstaffe, who is representing Robin Williams’ widow, said his client will remain in the San Francisco Bay Area home she shared with the actor and receive living expenses for the rest of her life.

The lawyer said Susan Williams also will receive a watch the actor often wore, a bike they bought on their honeymoon, and the gifts received for their wedding.

Meredith Bushnell, who is representing the three children from previous marriage – Zachary, Zelda and Cody, said: “I think they’re just very happy to have this behind them.”

The settlement, which is subject to a judge’s approval, ends a bitter and public dispute following Robin Williams’ suicide in 2014.

Among the items in dispute were watches, memorabilia, the tuxedo he was married in and photographs taken on his 60th birthday, according to court documents and previous statements by attorney Jim Wagstaffe.

Susan Williams said in papers filed in December that the contents of the San Francisco Bay Area home she shared with Robin Williams should be excluded from the items the actor left to his children.

She also claimed some of Robin Williams’ personal items were taken without her permission.

Robin Williams’ three children countered that the widow was “adding insult to a terrible injury” by trying to change the trust agreement and deprive them of items that their father clearly intended to leave to them.

Chris Harper Mercer: Umpqua Community College Gunman Targeted Christians

Chris Harper Mercer, the gunman who killed nine people and wounded seven others at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, had targeted Christians, the father of one of the victims says.

The gunman opened fire on October 1 inside a classroom at Umpqua Community College.

Officials said on October 2 that Chris Harper Mercer had body armor, three pistols, a rifle and five extra magazines of ammunition.

Chris Harper Mercer was shot and killed by police officers who arrived at the scene after a gun battle.

President Barack Obama has expressed frustration over the “routine” response to mass shootings, saying the US had become “numb” to such attacks.

Stacy Boylan, whose daughter survived the shooting, told CNN that his daughter described to him how the gunman asked his victims to state their religion before shooting them.

“<<Are you a Christian?>> he would ask them, <<and if you are a Christian stand up>>,” the father recalled.

Stacy Boylan said the gunman told the victims: “Because you’re a Christian you’re going to see God in just about one second.”

Another student who survived the shooting, Kortney Moore, gave a similar account to local newspaper The News-Review.

The attacker was identified by unnamed officers, as local police refused to release his name.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said he did not wish to give the gunman “the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act”.Chris Harper Mercer Umpqua Community College Oregon shooting

However, the sheriff has come under fire for his stance opposing gun control measures in the past.

Hours after the attack, Barack Obama reiterated demands for tighter gun laws, saying prayers are “no longer enough”.

“We are not the only country on Earth that has people with mental illnesses or want to do harm to other people.

“But we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees these mass shootings every few months.”

The president said countries like the UK and Australia showed that effective legislation was possible.

Candidates vying to replace Barack Obama in office have begun to weigh in as well.

Shortly after the shooting, Republican front-runner Donald Trump called the Washington Post and described the “terrible tragedy” as sounding like “another mental health problem”.

Donald Trump added that it appeared mass shootings were more frequent.

Hillary Clinton said “we are seeing these mass murders happen again and again and again” and called on people in the US to “get the political will to do everything we can to keep people safe”.

Chris Harper Mercer was reportedly born in the UK and moved to the US as a young boy.

A man identified as the gunman’s father, Ian Mercer, told media he was “just as shocked as everybody” by his son’s actions.

The killer’s motive is not known, although police said they were investigating reports that he had warned of his intentions on social media.

In an online profile appearing to belong to Chris Harper Mercer, he listed hobbies including the internet and “killing zombies”, described his politics as “conservative, republican” and said he was spiritual but not religious.

South Korea has expelled nine Russian athletes, trainers and journalists who allegedly got drunk and rowdy on a flight to the Mungyeong military world games.

The nine were detained at Incheon airport near Seoul and barred from this year’s CISM World Summer Games. They were then sent home.

South Korean police said the group – five men and four women – protested noisily and blocked an aisle after Korean Air cabin crew refused them more alcohol.CISM Games 2015 South Korea

The CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire) games, this year at the 6th edition, is the world’s biggest military sports event.

Yoo Ji-hyun, spokesman for the CISM organizing committee, said the nine were accused of violating South Korea’s aviation security law.

The Associated Press news agency said the Russians included two female swimmers, both active duty soldiers.

Only eight athletes from Russia are left to compete in the games, Yonhap news agency reports.

The games have attracted 7,000 athletes from 117 countries, competing in 24 sports disciplines.

The 6th CISM World Summer Games will run from October 2 to October 11.

Bangalore Students Set New Guinness World Record for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Mahatma Gandhi

Nearly 5,000 students in the southern Indian city of Bangalore have set a new Guinness world record for “the largest gathering of people dressed as Mohandas Gandhi”.

Amazon Stops Selling Apple TV and Google Chromecast

Amazon plans to stop selling Apple and Google video-streaming devices because they don’t “interact well” with its own media service.

The online retailer said it wants to sell products that work with its in-house streaming video service known as Prime Video.

Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast don’t easily support Prime Video.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is planning on dropping streaming devices that don’t work with its Prime Video streaming service as of October 29.

Amazon sent an email to its marketplace sellers letting them know that no new listings for Apple TV or Chromecast products would be allowed and that existing listings would be removed as of October 29, Bloomberg reports.

The retailer said it had made the decision to avoid “customer confusion.”

Amazon said along with its own Fire TV, it will continue to sell other companies’ devices that are compatible with Prime Video.

These include Roku, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Sony’s Playstation.

Amazon has rapidly expanded its online content, using it to attract subscribers to its Prime loyalty membership scheme which offers fast delivery on purchases.

The company has used similar tactics with book publishers.

Last year Amazon blocked pre-orders for some books from the publisher Hachette, while the two sides negotiated over prices.

Many authors were angered by the move and accused Amazon of being anti-competitive.

Hurricane Joaquin Hits Bahamas as Category Four Storm

Hurricane Joaquin has battered parts of the Bahamas with heavy rains and winds after it was reclassified up to the second strongest type of storm.

Sustained winds of up to 130mph were reported in parts of the eastern Bahamas, the US National Hurricane Center said.

The NHC says Hurricane Joaquin could affect the US East Coast by October 4, and said it was now an “extremely dangerous” storm.

Emergency teams said there were no reports of casualties in the Bahamas.

Forecasters in the US and the Bahamas are warning that central islands, many of which are low-lying, could see a storm surge of up to 12ft.

“We do not know the impact of 130mph on those areas,” Bahamas PM Perry Christie said.

Photo AccuWeather
Photo AccuWeather

“We know it’s a horrific kind of experience.”

Images on social media showed water reaching close to the roofs of some homes. The Tribune 242 website said dozens of people were trapped in their homes in the southern Bahamas.

After being classified only as a storm on September 30, Joaquin had become a Category Four hurricane – on a scale of five – by October 1.

The NHC said the storm could strengthen again as it nears the central Bahamas, but it is likely to lose strength as it moves north.

States along the eastern US coast – many of whom have suffered heavy rains in recent days – have warned residents to take precautions.

But the NHC, while warning the path of the hurricane could change, said it was “becoming optimistic that the Carolinas and the mid-Atlantic states will avoid the direct effects from Joaquin”.

Meanwhile, the governors of New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and North and South Carolina declared states of emergency. One person was killed by flash floods in Spartanburg, South Carolina and schools in Charleston will be closed on October 2, local media reported.

Cuba has also issued warnings for four eastern provinces.

A White House spokesman said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was following the progress of Hurricane Joaquin and preparing in case it made landfall in the US.

CIA Agents Withdrawn from China After Massive Cyber Attack on OPM

The CIA has decided to withdraw its staff from the US embassy in China after data stolen from government computers could expose its agents, the Washington Post reports.

In April, data about some 21 million federal employees was stolen in a massive attack on the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

Security companies have blamed Chinese state hackers for the attack.

Removing the CIA staff was “precautionary”, agency officials told the Washington Post.

The CIA declined to comment directly on the matter.

Information about CIA staff was not in the massive cache of files stolen from OPM computers, but other records about background checks carried out by the State Department on employees were copied in the raid.CIA agents withdrawn from China

The CIA fears that by comparing the list of those who have been checked with the roster of known embassy personnel could help the Chinese expose its intelligence workers.

Those working at the embassy but not checked by the State Department were CIA agents, said the newspaper, citing “unnamed officials”.

The danger that trawling through the data would expose intelligence agents was also raised by CIA Director James Clapper during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

James Clapper said the breach had “potentially very serious implications” for the intelligence community by identifying its agents in other countries.

“This is a gift that’s going to keep on giving for years,” he told the Senate committee looking into the cyber-threats facing the US and the steps the nation took to combat them.

James Clapper added the US itself engaged in the types of cyber-attacks China had been accused of.

15 Million T-Mobile Customers Exposed by Data Breach

Hackers accessed the social security numbers, birthdates and other personal information belonging to about 15 million T-Mobile wireless customers and applicants, credit reporting agency Experian said on October 1.

The breach was at a unit of Experian, which T-Mobile uses to process information on subscribers.

Experian said T-Mobile customers who applied for wireless service between September 1, 2013 and September 16, 2015 may have had their information stolen.

Names, birth dates and social security numbers are among data stolen, but not financial details, the companies said.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere said his company would review its link with Experian.

“Obviously I am incredibly angry about this data breach,” he said.T Mobile customer data hacked

In a statement, John Legere said: “I take our customer and prospective customer privacy very seriously. This is no small issue for us.

“I do want to assure our customers that neither T-Mobile’s systems nor network were part of this intrusion and this did not involve any payment card numbers or bank account information.

“Experian has assured us that they have taken aggressive steps to improve the protection of their system and of our data.”

Experian North America chief executive Craig Boundy said in his own statement: “We sincerely apologize for the concern and stress that this event may cause.”

It was unclear when the breach was discovered, but Experian said the matter was reported to the authorities immediately after it learned of the hack.

Experian said in a statement: “We continue to investigate the theft, closely monitor our systems, and work with domestic and international law enforcement. Investigation of the incident is ongoing.

“Experian is notifying the individuals who may have been affected and is offering free credit monitoring and identity resolution services for two years. In addition, government agencies are being notified as required by law.”

Experian said there “is no evidence that the data has been used inappropriately”.

There have been a string of high-profile hacks of businesses and other organizations in recent years affecting millions of people, including adultery website Ashley Madison, Sony Pictures, and retailers such as Home Depot, Target, and eBay.

T-Mobile is now the third biggest mobile company in the US, having surpassed Sprint this year.

Oregon College Shooter Identified by Media as Chris Harper Mercer

The gunman who burst into a community college in southwest Oregon on October 1 and opened fire, killing nine people and wounding seven others before police shot him to death, has been identified as Chris Harper Mercer.

The suspect was not identified by local authorities but CBS, CNN and NBC named him as 26-year-old Chris Harper, citing anonymous law enforcement sources.

Chris Harper opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning and was killed in a police shootout.

The suspect, who witnesses say fired dozens of shots into a classroom full of screaming students, was then slain in an exchange of gunfire with police in Snyder Hall at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg following the rampage shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time.

There were conflicting reports on casualties but Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said 10 dead, including the gunman, was “the best” figure.

Sheriff John Hanlin said he would not confirm the suspect’s name, adding: “I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act.”Chris Harper Mercer Oregon college shooting

The suspect supposedly used a “long gun”.

A White House official said President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation and will continues to receive updates.

Marilyn Kittelman, the mother of a student at the college, told CNN her son said he heard no sound from the “30 some shots”, suggesting a suppressor may have been used on the gun, despite there not being an official count of those shot yet.

Sgt. Aaron Dunbar of the Roseburg Police Department told CNN the “entire college went into lockdown very quickly”.

Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg wrote on Twitter that it received nine patients from the college and three more are en route.

Peace Health Oregon wrote on Twitter it expects to receive three victims from the shooting.

Students were transported by bus to a local fairgrounds to be reunited with their loved ones.

According to Umpqua Community College’s website, the average age of students is 37, with 58% female and 42% male.

Sheriff John Hanlin said the school is the only place of higher education in Douglas County and that both young people and adults seeking continuing education attend the school.

A former president of the school, Joe Olson, said the school has no formal security staff, and that there was debate over whether to have armed security guards on campus last year.

Kolya Lukashenko: Belarus President Takes 11-Year-Old Son to UN General Assembly

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko surprised everyone by taking his 11-year-old son, Kolya, to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Kolya, short for Nikolai, was photographed posing with his father alongside Barack and Michelle Obama at a reception for the summit on September 28.

Lukashenko Jr. joined world leaders in the seats of the general assembly hall as his father addressed delegates from around the world.

It was not a one-off “take your child to work day” for Belarus’s ruling family.

Kolya Lukashenko, the president’s youngest son, often accompanies his father on official business, including a visit to Beijing for China’s World War Two commemorations on September 3.

The boy was pictured watching Beijing’s massive military parade alongside the likes of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and lining up for a photo shoot with leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

There are claims Alexander Lukashenko is grooming Kolya to be his successor. The president denied this and insisted Kolya was so attached to him that he would not go to sleep without him.

Alexander Lukashenko, who is estranged from his wife Galina, illegitimately fathered Nikolai, who was born in 2004. Though never confirmed by the government, it is widely believed that the Kolya’s mother is Irina Abelskaya.

Irina Abelskaya and Alexander Lukashenko, now 61, had an affair when she was Lukashenko’s personal doctor.

Alexander and Galina Lukashenko have two sons together – Viktor, 29, and Dmitry, 25.

Among other recent trips, Kolya Lukashenko went with his father to the United Arab Emirates in October 2014 where they visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

Kolya may be extraordinarily well travelled for an 11-year-old, but some critics have begun to question the increasing impact of all these appearances on his education.

The boy missed a week of school in September this year – the same amount of time that he missed during six months of 2014, according to the Polish-funded, Belarusian-language TV station Belsat.

Alexander Lukashenko’s tight grip on power has brought criticism from the West – with the Bush administration describing him in 2005 as the “last dictator in Europe” at the head of an “outpost of tyranny”.

Human rights groups accuse him of widespread abuses.

Meanwhile most Belarusian media channels are controlled by the government.

Kolya Lukasheno has received special attention in recent years – attending numerous world events and meeting global leaders.

Game of Thrones Movie Is NOT Happening, Says George RR Martin

Author George R.R. Martin has denied rumors that a Game of Thrones movie is being made, although he admitted he would “love to see one”.

The Daily Star quoted the author as saying at an HBO party that there “will be a movie”.

George R.R. Martin, 67, took to his online LiveJournal to respond: “Don’t believe everything you read, boys and girls. Especially not online.”

He did, however, confirm that there was “great enthusiasm” for the notion.

“The idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. How not?,” he wrote.Game of Thrones movie rumors denied

“It would be a great way to end.”

George R.R. Martin went on to qualify that “[HBO] are in the TV business, not the feature film business. And those of you with long memories may recall all the rumors about a Sopranos movie…a Rome movie…a Deadwood movie. Rumors is all they were. And that’s all this one is too, at least for now.”

HBO’s president of programming, Michael Lombardo, confirmed the station’s stance, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

“Certainly there have been conversations where it’s been said, <<Wouldn’t it be cool to do that?>>,” Michael Lombardo said.

“But when you start a series with our subscribers, the promise is that for your HBO fee that we’re going to take you to the end of this. I feel that on some level [a movie would be] changing the rules: Now you have to pay $16 to see how your show ends.”

This is despite fans of the show already demonstrating their enthusiasm to experience the series on the big screen. The IMAX limited release of the series generated an impressive $1.9 million at the US box office for showing two repeats of the series in 205 cinemas across Super Bowl weekend.

Game of Thrones series won a record 12 Emmys at this year’s ceremony.

Game of Thrones Season 6 returns to HBO in 2016.

Mecca Stampede: Iranian Citizens Death Toll Reaches 464

The number of Iranian citizens who died in the Hajj stampeded in Saudi Arabia last week has reached 464 – nearly double the previous toll, Iranian officials say.

Iranian authorities said there was no longer hope of finding any of the country’s missing pilgrims alive.

According to Saudi officials, 769 people died in the crush in Mina, near Mecca, and 934 were injured.

The Saudis have been criticized over their handling of security and for the slow publication of casualty figures.

Iranian officials allege that the overall number of deaths is now more than 1,000. Pakistan, India, and Indonesia have also suggested death toll may be higher than the 769 reported by Saudi Arabia.Iranian death toll Mecca stampede 2015

Saudi authorities have not released a breakdown of victims by nationality, but a tally of the numbers of dead released by individual countries adds up to more than the official figure.

The crush occurred as two large groups of pilgrims converged at right angles on the way to taking part in one of the Hajj’s major rites at the Jamarat pillars.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called on Saudi Arabia to apologize for the deadly stampede and warned of “harsh” measures if the kingdom fails to promptly repatriate the bodies of Iran’s dead.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has accused Iran of “playing politics” with the disaster and called on the Islamic Republic to await the outcome of an investigation ordered by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman.

Saeed Ohadi, the head of Iran’s Hajj department, told state television that Iranian officials are trying to return bodies of Iranian pilgrims “as soon as possible”.

He said Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed not to bury any of the dead in Saudi Arabia without prior permission by Iran or the families of the deceased.

Saudi officials have blamed pilgrims for the stampede, suggesting some had “moved without following instructions by the relevant authorities”.

The Hajj disaster was the second to strike the region in two weeks, after a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing 109 people.

Russia and US to Hold Talks on Syria Airstrikes

Russia and US military will hold talks “as soon as possible” to avoid clashing in Syria, the countries’ top diplomats say.

Russian defense officials say their aircraft carried out about 20 missions against the so-called Islamic State group (ISIS) on September 30.

However, the US expressed fears the targets were non-ISIS opponents of Russia’s ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The US is targeting ISIS with air strikes in both Syria and Iraq.

NATO said there had been little co-ordination by Russia with US-led forces against ISIS, also known as Isil. The US says it was informed of Wednesday’s air strikes only an hour before they took place.

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal report that US-backed rebels were targeted by Russia.Russia and US talks on Syria airstrikes

Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said there was a need to “establish channels of communication to avoid any unintended incidents”. His US counterpart, John Kerry, said talks will be held “as soon as possible,” maybe as early as October 1.

John Kerry added: “It’s one thing to be targeting Isil, but the concern, obviously, is that this is not what was happening.”

France’s Defense Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, told French lawmakers: “Curiously, they didn’t hit Islamic State. I will let you draw a certain number of conclusions yourselves.”

Syria’s civil war has raged for four years, with an array of armed groups fighting to overthrow the government.

The US and its allies have insisted that President Bashar al-Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed him remaining in power.

The Russian defense ministry said the country’s air force had targeted ISIS military equipment, communication facilities, arms depots, ammunition and fuel supplies – and did not hit civilian infrastructure or areas nearby.

Syrian opposition activists said Russian warplanes hit towns including Zafaraneh, Rastan and Talbiseh, resulting in the deaths of at least 36 civilians, a number of them children.

None of the areas targeted was controlled by ISIS, activists said.

In a TV address, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the air strikes were targeting Islamist militants – including Russian citizens – who have taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq.

“If they [militants] succeed in Syria, they will return to their home country, and they will come to Russia, too,” he said.

He added that Russia would be “supporting the Syrian army purely in its legitimate fight with terrorist groups”.

Vladimir Putin also said he expected President Bashar al-Assad to talk with the Syrian opposition about a political settlement, but clarified that he was referring to what he described as “healthy” opposition groups.
