Ernst Fuchs Dies Aged 85

Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs, co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, has died at the age of 85.

The painter’s son, Tillmann Fuchs, said his father died on November 9 but gave no cause of death.

Ernst Fuchs was renowned for his brightly colored works that combined allegorical and religious themes.

He was also a talented sculptor, architect, stage designer, composer, poet and singer.

Ernst Fuchs was also known for his unique personal style of a full beard and patterned caps.

Born in Vienna, the artist was the only child of a Jewish antiques dealer and a Catholic seamstress.

He was baptized as a Catholic during the Nazi era to escape the Holocaust and his work over his career increasingly focused on religious symbolism.

Ernst Fuchs’ most famous painting was the large-scale Last Supper, which he started after visiting the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem in 1957.

His talent as an artist was spotted early and, at the age of 15, he was accepted to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

There he met fellow students Anton Lehmden, Arik Brauer, Wolfgang Hutter and Rudolf Hausner. Together they founded the artistic movement known as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.

All studied under Professor Albert Paris Gutersloh.

The professor emphasized the techniques of the Old Masters in order to give clarity and detail to their work, and the use of allegory and religious symbolism.

Ernst Fuchs was also influenced by the Austrian symbolist artist Gustav Klimt – painter of vivid and textured works such as The Kiss – and Fuchs himself became renown for works that emphasized texture as well as color.

He revived the traditional mixed technique, using egg tempera to build volume, and glazing it with oil paints mixed with resin to create a sparkling effect.

Ernst Fuchs moved to Paris in 1950 and lived there for 12 years, during which time he travelled to Italy, Spain, England and the US.

The trips brought him into contact with artists such as Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico and Jean Cocteau, with whom he became good friends.

Ernst Fuchs returned to Vienna in 1961 and started writing about the art of painting, producing several books.

By the mid-1970s he was a sought-after opera stage director and designer, working on productions of Mozart’s Magic Flute and Wagner’s Parsifal and Lohengrin.

In 1972, Ernst Fuchs bought the derelict former home of the 19th-Century architect Otto Wagner villa in Hutteldorf.

The artist restored and transformed the home and it later became the Ernst Fuchs Museum.

Prince Solo Piano Tour to Kick-off in Austria

Prince has announced that his European tour will kick-off in less than a month.

The singer will play solo sets at the piano for the first time in his career.

The tour is expected to kick-off in Austria on November 21, with 4 dates in the UK, according to reports.

In a statement, Prince said: “Why do this now? For several reasons. For starters it is a challenge.

“I rarely get bad reviews because this is something that’s been perfected for over 30 years.

“You have to try new things. With the piano it is more naked, more pure. You can see exactly what you get.”

Prince has often incorporated solo piano segments into his shows – using them as an opportunity to flick through his back catalogue and play snippets of lesser-known songs.

He also released an entire album recorded at the piano, 2002’s One Nite Alone, which included a cover of Joni Mitchell’s A Case Of You.

Other piano-led songs in his repertoire include The Beautiful Ones, Sometimes It Snows In April, How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore and Starfish and Coffee.

Prince made headlines in 2013 with his Hit and Run tour, where venues were announced with less than 24 hours notice, and tickets sold for as little as $15.

The enigmatic musician – famed for his energetic live shows and incendiary guitar solos, has hinted the Piano and A Microphone tour will have a different set list every night.

UK venues have yet to be confirmed – although dates are said to be planned in Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and London.

Prince – who rarely makes traditional, straightforward announcements on touring – apparently broke the news by inviting a small group of music writers from European newspapers to his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota.

Prince posted a photo to his Instagram account labeled “European Press” before a story appeared in Spain’s El Pais newspaper.

SeaWorld San Diego to Drop Orca Show

0

The SeaWorld theme park in California has decided to phase out controversial public displays by killer whales, CEO Joel Manby has said.

Joel Manby announced that 2017 will be the last year of the show in San Diego.

He said that the move was part of a strategy that seeks to reverse falling visitor numbers at the company’s 11 parks across the US.

SeaWorld has faced intense criticism by activists who say keeping the orcas in captivity is cruel and unnecessary.

Its shares have halved in value since the release of a critical documentary film two years ago.

Dramatic displays by orcas are the centerpiece at three parks operated by SeaWorld, in California, Florida and Texas.

The San Diego park is the company’s second biggest and features its famous Shamu killer whale show.

The parks have long been criticized by animal rights activists and some politicians, who argue that keeping the mammals – also known as orcas – in captivity is cruel and unnecessary.

Last month, Californian authorities prohibited SeaWorld from breeding animals in captivity, calling into question the future of the park’s popular killer whale attraction.

The San Diego show will reportedly be replaced with a new orca experience in a “more natural” setting but it is not clear what exactly that will involve.

SeaWorld’s popularity was damaged and attendance fell at its parks – especially in California – following the critically-acclaimed 2013 documentary Blackfish, which highlighted the impact of captivity on orcas.

The company has dismissed the documentary as inaccurate and misleading, pointing out that it has not captured a whale in the wild for 35 years.

SeaWorld has since sought to improve its fortunes with a fresh marketing campaign and discount offers.

Lake Chad State of Emergency Declared after Boko Haram Attacks

0

Chad has declared a state of emergency after Boko Haram attacks in the Lake Chad region.

At least two people were killed in a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomb attack.

Ministers say sweeping powers to control people’s movements are needed because the area, which borders Nigeria, is targeted by Boko Haram.

Chad has been instrumental in helping Nigeria retake most of the areas Boko Haram had seized in northern Nigeria.

In the last few months, the militant group has intensified attacks in remote areas around Lake Chad.

Boko Haram is suspected of involvement in the killing of at least two people in a village in Chad on November 8 and three Nigerian refugees in northern Cameroon on November 9.Boko Haram Lake Chad attacks

The state of emergency will give the governor of the region the authority to ban the movement of people and vehicles, search homes and recover arms, the government announced following an extraordinary cabinet meeting.

Aside from Chad, Boko Haram attacks have spread from north-eastern Nigeria, its traditional stronghold, to the neighboring countries of Niger and Cameroon.

Chad is also host to a new regional force set up to tackle the Nigeria-based militant Islamists.

Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria agreed to establish the 8,700-strong force, but it has yet to start operations in earnest because of reported funding difficulties.

According to Amnesty International, at least 17,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since 2009, when Boko Haram launched its violent uprising to try to impose Islamist rule in northern Nigeria.

Tim Wolfe: University of Missouri President Resigns amid Racism Row

Timothy M. Wolfe, the University of Missouri System president, has resigned amid accusations that there is endemic racism at the university that is not being addressed.

Tim Wolfe made the announcement as students and professors staged a walkout at the Columbia campus.

Some members of the university’s football team have threatened not to play at a game on November 7 over the racial issues.

Black student groups say racial slurs are commonly used around campus.

In his statement, Tim Wolfe said: “The frustration and anger that I see is clear and real and I don’t doubt it for a second.

“I take full responsibility for the frustration and inaction on this campus.”Tim Wolfe resignation

Missouri graduate student Jonathan Butler, who had been participating in a hunger strike as a protest, said the resignation was a “great step towards change” but there was still a lot of work to do.

“We still have a lot of healing that needs to happen on campus,” Jonathan Butler said, adding that his hunger strike would now end.

Tim Wolfe served as president of the entire university system and not specifically for the flagship Columbia campus.

Concerned Student 1950, the student group that has been having a sit-in on campus since November 2, tweeted that Tim Wolfe’s resignation was a victory but its work was not done.

“Our brother can eat, but we are still owed Demands! Stay strong!” Concerned Student 1950 tweeted.

Jeremy Mardis Funeral Services Held In Mississippi

The funeral of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis, who was shot dead by police in Louisiana, is under way in Mississippi.

Jeremy Mardis was killed and his father, Chris Few, was injured when city marshals in Marksville, Louisiana, opened fire on their car during a traffic stop.

A senior officer has said it is not yet clear why they were stopped but perhaps the officers did not see the child.

The two police officers are due in court to face charges of second-degree murder.

Funeral services are being held in Jeremy Mardis’ hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi – from where he had recently moved to Louisiana.

His father, meanwhile, remains in hospital.Jeremy Mardis funeral Mississippi

Col. Michael Edmonson of Louisiana state police said on November 9 he was still “figuring out” why the car was being pursued by police.

Hopefully they did not see the boy was in the back seat before they fired, he told CNN.

Early reports said that the two officers were serving a warrant on Chris Few.

However, Michael Edmonson said there was no evidence a warrant was issued, and that no gun was found at the crime scene.

The two officers were arrested on November 6 after body-camera footage taken from them was assessed.

Referring to the body-camera footage of the incident, Col. Michael Edmondson added: “I can tell you, it is the most disturbing thing I’ve seen, and I’ll leave it like that.”

They each face charges of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. They are currently being held in a Louisiana jail.

Spectre Tops US Box Office in Its First Weekend of Release

Spectre has topped the North American box office in its first weekend of release.

The 24th movie in James Bond franchise, which sees Daniel Craig reprise his role as 007, earned $73 million between November 6 and 7, according to early estimates.

However, Spectre failed to beat the performance of the last James Bond movie Skyfall, which took $88.4 million in 2012.

The lower figure was partly due to this weekend’s release of The Peanuts Movie.

The family-friendly adaptation of the beloved Charles Schulz comic strip, featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy, took $45 million.

Spectre still had the second-biggest opening weekend for a Bond film in the US and Canada.Spectre US box office

“We never expected [Spectre] to open to the level of Skyfall,” Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, said.

“It was a very different scenario. The competition was different, the weekend was different. One thing I am certain of is that the Bond franchise is as healthy and strong as ever.”

The rest of the top five was made up of previous releases The Martian, family horror Goosebumps and Tom Hanks’ movie Bridge of Spies.

Three movies hoping to score success this awards season also opened in limited release across five theaters. They included Spotlight, which took $302,276.

Saoirse Ronan’s 1950s-set immigrant story Brooklyn made $181,000, while Bryan Cranston biopic Trumbo took $77,229.

North American box office Top 5:

  1. Spectre – $73 million
  2. The Peanuts Movie – $45 million
  3. The Martian – $9.3 million
  4. Goosebumps – $7 million
  5. Bridge of Spies – $6.1 million

John Lennon’s Guitar Auctioned for $2.4 Million in Beverly Hills

John Lennon’s acoustic guitar has been sold at auction in California for $2.4 million.

The Beatle is thought to have recorded and written a number of hit songs, including Love Me Do and I Want to Hold Your Hand, on the Gibson J-160E guitar.

The guitar was one of only two of its type flown from the US to England in 1962 for John Lennon and George Harrison.

John Lennon used the guitar for about a year before swapping it with George Harrison in 1963, after which vanished.John Lennon lost guitar auction

For more than 50 years the guitar’s whereabouts remained unknown until a man in California discovered last year that an instrument in his possession may have historical value.

The Associated Press has named the man as John McCaw from San Diego, who bought the guitar for $275 in the late 1960s.

In 2014, John McCaw found an old magazine article about George Harrison, which featured a photo of the instrument.

The guitar was then looked at by Beatles’ instruments expert Andy Babiuk, who was able to identify it by its unique markings as the one John Lennon used.

Andy Babiuk compared it with photographs and film footage of John Lennon playing it.

By The Sea: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Movie Called a Vanity Project

Angelina Jolie’s latest movie By The Sea, in which she stars with husband Brad Pitt, has been called by critics a “vanity project”.

The relationship drama, written and directed by Angelina Jolie, opened this year’s American Film Institute Film Festival in Los Angeles.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the movie was “far too long” and suffered from “stasis and dramatic flatness”.

Variety added that it “it leaves the heart and mind coolly unstirred”.

The publication summed up the movie as “a gorgeously unhappy 1970s American couple seeking to escape their demons during an extended stay on the Maltese coast”.By The Sea Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Screen Daily said it was “an intimate art-house film for a major studio” and that it was “sure to garner attention because of the marquee attraction” of its stars.

By The Sea is the first movie in which they have starred together since 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and is Angelina Jolie’s third movie as director, after 2011’s In The Land of Blood and Honey and 2014’s Unbroken.

Screen Daily said Angelina Jolie’s “commitment to serious themes is undercut by a rigid, overblown style”.

“No matter the type of story she’s trying to tell, she often bears down on it so hard that the film doesn’t have much room to breathe,” the publication added.

By The Sea is released in the US theaters on November 13.

Australia: Christmas Island Detention Center Set on Fire by Angry Inmates

Australia’s Christmas Island detention center has been set on fire by inmates in a “major disturbance” that is yet to be resolved, government officials say.

The unrest was sparked by the death of an Iranian detainee, Fazel Chegeni, who had escaped the camp.

The immigration department confirmed in a statement that guards had been withdrawn for “safety reasons”.

The statement denied a “large-scale riot” was taking place but said the situation at the center for refugees and asylum seekers was “tense”.

Christmas Island is a remote outpost located 1,650 miles north-west of Perth and 238 miles south of Java in Indonesia.

It is part of Australia’s network of offshore processing centers for irregular refugees who arrive by boat, and also houses New Zealanders facing deportation from Australia.

The Department of Immigration said the unrest started when a group of Iranian inmates staged a protest about the death of an Iranian Kurd, Fazel Chegeni.

Fazel Chegeni had escaped from the facility on November 7. His body was found at the bottom of a cliff on November 8.Christmas Island detention centre riot

The statement said that “while peaceful protest is permissible, other detainees took advantage of the situation to engage in property damage and general unrest”.

It said a number of small fires had been lit within the complex and that a group of detainees “continue to agitate and cause damage to the facility”.

“There are no reports at this time of any injuries to detainees or staff.”

Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said officers from private contractor Serco, which operates the detention centre, would be “negotiating or dealing with those people who have caused disturbances”.

“If people have caused damage to Commonwealth property, then they will be investigated and prosecuted in relation to those matters,” Peter Dutton said.

Ian Rintoul, of the Refugee Action Coalition group, said that Fazel Chegeni was “suffering the effects of long-term arbitrary detention”.

“He had told other detainees that he could no longer stand being in detention and just wanted <<to go outside>>,” Ian Rintoul said in a statement.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the unrest was inevitable, and described the centre as being in “meltdown”.

“I have spoken with people who are locked up in the centre and they say that there is widespread unrest and fires across the facility,” Sarah Hanson-Young said in a statement.

“With all Serco guards being removed from the center late last night, the people who are locked up there are being left to fend for themselves.”

Sarah Hanson-Young said she was concerned that asylum seekers had been locked up with other detainees, putting them “at risk”.

“The government was warned repeatedly about the increasingly toxic situation on Christmas Island but, regrettably, those warnings were ignored,” she said.

Australia sends intercepted asylum seekers to Christmas Island, Manus Island in Papua New Guinea and Nauru in the South Pacific.

The government says the journey the asylum seekers make by sea to reach Australia is dangerous and controlled by criminal gangs and they have a duty to stop it. Critics say opposition to asylum is often racially motivated and is damaging Australia’s reputation.

The policy was branded a “disaster” by Human Rights Watch’s Australia director in July. The group also raised concern over conditions at the Manus camp.

Croatia Elections 2015: Opposition Conservatives Claim Victory

Croatian conservatives have declared victory in the country’sparliamentary elections, but face a challenge to form a government.

Partial results show the HDZ party is to win about 60 seats, with more than 50 for the ruling alliance led by the Social Democrats.

The conservatives are now expected to enter talks to form a coalition.

Refugee crisis was one of the main issues. More than 320,000 refugees have passed through Croatia this year.

“The victory brought us responsibility to lead our country, which is in a difficult situation,” HDZ leader Tomislav Karamarko told supporters.

“Whoever wants to fight with us for the quality of life in Croatia is welcome.”

The big winner looks to be the third force in the election – an alliance of independent candidates known as Most (Bridge), which is expected to claim about 19 seats.

However, Most said before the vote it would not join either main coalition.

The two alliances have promised different approaches on how to handle the arrival of more refugees and migrants.

Croatia has become a transit hub for refugees, many from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, who want to travel north.

Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said this week that 320,000 refugees had passed through the country so far this year.

The cost of managing the arrivals was close to 2 million kuna ($284,000) a day, he said.

Numbers increased when Hungary shut its border with Serbia, forcing more people to seek an alternative route north through Croatia.

Croatian PM Zoran Milanovic and his Social Democrats (SDP) won approval for their compassionate handling of the refugee crisis.

Tomislav Karamarko has suggested using troops and fences to reduce the number of arrivals.

The election was Croatia’s first since it joined the EU in 2013.

Maggi Noodles Return to Indian Market

Maggi noodles are back on Indian stores shelves, five months after a food scare saw them taken off shelves.

In May, Indian food safety authorities banned the production and sale of Maggi amid claims they contained dangerously high levels of lead.

The ban was overturned in the Bombay High Court in August.

Nestle had to destroy 400 million packets of Maggi products and stop production in the wake of the tests.

The product recall cost the company $67 million.Maggi noodles India

A company statement on November 9 said it had been “a challenging period for the Nestle organization and therefore, there is a feeling of satisfaction at bringing back Maggi noodles to the market”.

India’s government is suing Nestle for $100 million over allegedly misleading Maggi ads.

Fresh tests mandated by an Indian court found last month that the lead content in Maggi noodles was at a safe level.

Nestle was also criticized for what was seen as a slow reaction to the crisis.

The company is planning a consumer helpline and says it will be more active on social media.

Bucharest Nightclub Fire: Death Toll Rises to 45 as More Victims Are Transferred Abroad

Some of the Bucharest nightclub fire victims are being transported by NATO planes to hospitals in Norway and the UK.

The blaze at Bucharest’s Colectiv club on October 30 was started by fireworks that ignited foam on the club’s walls.

On November 8, four more people died of their injuries, bringing the number of deaths to 45, officials say.

Bogdan Enache, the drummer of Goodbye to Gravity band playing the venue, died after his condition worsened on a military plane taking him for treatment in Switzerland.

The plane turned back to Romania but Bogdan Enache died soon after it landed.

Another nine deaths were announced on November 7.

The fire led to mass protests and the resignation of PM Victor Ponta’s government.

More than 30 people remain in a serious or critical condition in hospital, Romania’s health minister said on November 8.

The ministry says 21 people are being treated in hospitals across Europe and in Israel.

The NATO plane left Romania to transport 12 burns victims to the UK and Norway, Emergencies Minister Raed Arafat said. It was not stated how many victims were being taken to each country.

The club owners have been arrested amid allegations that the venue was overcrowded, lacked the required number of emergency exits, and may not have been authorzed to hold such a concert.

Hundreds of protesters continue to hold rallies in Bucharest. The demonstrations have now entered their sixth day.

Bihar Assembly Election 2015: PM Narendra Modi Admits Defeat

Indian PM Narendra Modi has admitted defeat for his governing BJP in a key regional election in Bihar state.

The BJP was running against an alliance of parties linked to main opposition Congress party in the state assembly.

Narendra Modi won a convincing victory in last year’s national elections, but this poll was seen as a referendum on his economic program.Bihar Assembly elections 2015

However, a spokesman for the Hindu-led nationalist party rejected suggestions the result for Bihar state assembly was a personal blow for Narendra Modi, saying the BJP “managed a creditable performance”.

Narendra Modi had been hoping a victory in Bihar would boost his party’s strength in India’s upper house of parliament, which made up of representatives of state legislatures and where he lacks a majority.

With votes still being counted, the anti-Modi alliance was ahead in 125 seats, compared with the BJP’s 79 seats, out of 238 where the trends were clear.

Bihar, in the north-west of India, is one of the country’s largest states, with a population of 100 million, and is also one of the poorest.

JFK Fatal Limo License Plates Fetch $100,000 at Auction

The license plates from the car that drove President John F. Kennedy when he was killed in November 1963 have sold at auction for $100,000.

The plates had been discarded when the limousine was sent for upgrades after JFK was shot dead in Dallas.

The company’s owner retrieved them and passed them on to his daughter.

The plates, bearing number GG-300, had been expected to achieve close to $40,000 at the auction in Dallas.

The license plates were almost relegated to the garbage bin. The plates were the property of Jane Walker, and were stored in a junk drawer. JFK fatal limo license plates auction

She inherited the family heirloom from her father, Willard C. Hess. He was the co-founder of Hess & Eisenhardt, the company that converted the President’s Lincoln into a limousine.

“I was aware of their significance,” Jane Walker said.

“On occasion, I would take them out and show to friends.”

The auction company said the plates were bought by a “high-end Kennedy collector” who wanted to remain anonymous.

Also sold was a menu from the last dinner served on the Titanic before it sank. The menu fetched $118,750.

Some diners on the Titanic were served oysters, roast duckling and peaches in chartreuse jelly.

California Mystery Light: Navy Missile Test Flight Spooks Bay Area Sky Watchers

A Navy missile test sparked a mysterious bright light in the sky sending Californians into panic.

The light was spotted travelling quickly over Orange County and neighboring areas late on Saturday, November 7, leading to fevered speculation online over its origin.

The Orange County sheriff said the light was from a naval test fire made off the California coastline.

Aviation officials had warned of possible US military activity.

Videos posted online show a bright flare rising high, before a wide, bright blue flash emerges in a cone shape. Many videos continue to track the light for several minutes.South California mystery light

On November 6, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said night-time flights to and from Los Angeles International (LAX) would avoid flying over the Pacific Ocean to the west of the airport, the second busiest in the US.

The FAA did not disclose the reason for the change, but indicated that military activity in the area would take place between November 5 and 6.

Media in California confirmed that the light came from an unarmed Trident missile fired from the USS Kentucky navy submarine.

The platinum-selling singer Josh Groban was one of those who tweeted his shock at the light:

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, police were inundated with calls “reporting everything from a flare to a comet to a nuclear bomb”.

The publication said the light was seen as far away as the states of Nevada and Arizona. CBS-LA reported sightings in San Francisco, 380 miles to the north.

Croatia Elections 2015: Ruling Center-Left Coalition Faces Challenge to Stay in Power

Croatians are voting in the country’s first parliamentary elections since joining the EU.

The ruling center-left coalition faces a challenge to stay in power, with the refugee crisis one of the main issues facing voters on November 8.

Polls before the election indicate the government and the conservative opposition are neck-and-neck.

Both coalitions promise different approaches on how to handle the arrival of more refugees and migrants.

Croatia has become a transit hub for migrants, many from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, who want to travel north.

Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said this week that 320,000 migrants had passed through the country so far this year.

The leader of the opposition HDZ party, Tomislav Karamarko, has suggested using troops and fences to reduce the number of arrivals.

As well as the migrant crisis, Croatia’s next government will be faced with a weak economy: unemployment is at 15.4% – the third-highest in the EU, after Greece and Spain; youth unemployment is at 43.1% – also the third-highest in the EU.

Croatia has suffered six years of recession, but has seen little growth this year.

Neither of the two main parties is expected to gain a majority in the 151-seat parliament, meaning a coalition is likely to be necessary.

The election is Croatia’s first since it joined the EU in 2013.

Donald Trump’s SNL Appearance Hit by Protests

Latino protesters have marched in New York as Donald Trump presented the NBC’s Saturday Night Live show.

Donald Trump became the seventh presidential hopeful to host the NBC show, five months after the network dropped him after he made derogatory statements about immigrants.

Groups marched to NBC’s studios, criticizing the network.

Donald Trump’s opening monologue on the show made light of the protests.

When he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination, Donald Trump described Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug smugglers.

Soon afterwards, NBC dropped the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants co-owned by Donald Trump, saying “respect and dignity for all people” were “cornerstones of our values”.

However, NBC announced last month that Donald Trump would return to the airwaves for a one-off appearance on SNL.

He had previously hosted the show in 2004.

Donald Trump told the audience in New York that he was there “to show I can take a joke”.

While Donald Trump’s campaign officials have not commented on the protest, he said in June that he was on good terms with his Hispanic employees and that “Latinos love Trump, and I love them”.

In the opening sketch of Saturday night’s show, Donald Trump was heckled by a man calling him racist – only for it to emerge that the voice belonged to Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David.

“I heard if I did that I would get $5,000,” Larry David said, referring to an offer made by a Latino rights group to any potential hecklers.

“As a businessman, I can fully respect that,” Donald Trump replied.

Myanmar Elections 2015: First Openly Contested Poll in 25 Years

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is voting in the first openly contested general elections in 25 years after decades of military rule.

The ruling Union Solidarity Development Party (USDP), backed by the military, is one of the frontrunners.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) is expected to make large gains, although she is barred from running for the presidency.

Large crowds gathered in Yangon as Aung San Suu Kyi arrived to cast her vote.

Across the country, long queues formed at some polling booths, with reports of people queuing from long before dawn.

About 30 million people are eligible to vote in the election in Myanmar.

Clear results are not expected until November 9.

More than 6,000 candidates from over 90 parties are vying to be elected to the 664-seat parliament in the first national elections since a nominally civilian government took power in 2011.

However, 25% of seats are reserved for unelected military representatives, who are expected to side with the USDP.

Aung San Suu Kyi, a former Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is barred from the presidency as the constitution disqualifies anyone with foreign offspring.

On November 5, Aung San Suu Kyi said she would be “above the president” if her party won. The NLD must take 67% of all contested seats in order to gain a majority.

Current President Thein Sein said he would accept the election result.

Hundreds of thousands of people – including minority Rohingya Muslims – have been denied voting rights, raising concerns about the fairness of the poll.

Ahead of the vote, security has been stepped up across the country, with some 40,000 police guarding polling stations.

Ruled by the junta for nearly half a century, Myanmar has seen economic and political reform in recent years.

Aung San Suu Kyi has already raised concerns about poll fraud and voting irregularities. In the 1990 election, the NLD won a majority, but the results were largely ignored by the generals.

For its part, the government has warned that rapid change could lead to civil unrest.

Serial: Adnan Syed’s Lawyers Allowed to Present New Evidence

Adnan Syed’s lawyers will be allowed to present new evidence in his case after a court ruling on November 6.

The 35-year-old subject of the hit podcast Serial is serving a life sentence for the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999.

Adnan Syed’s defense team is trying to reopen the case based on some of the questions raised in the Serial podcast over whether Syed had received a fair trial.

A judge in Baltimore has allowed lawyers to submit new evidence for the first time since his conviction.

Serial, which was released in weekly installments at the end of 2014, became a global hit, breaking records as the fastest podcast to reach 5 million downloads on iTunes.

In the podcast, journalists went through every detail in the investigation into the death of Hae Min Lee, for which her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted. Apparent errors and possible new evidence were discovered by the Serial team, leading to calls for a new investigation.Adnan Syed murder case reopened

Lawyers will now be allowed to present new evidence on two fronts: the reliability of mobile phone records and the testimony of a potential alibi.

In the 2000 trial, prosecutors relied heavily on mobile phone records that allegedly placed Pakistani-American Adnan Syed at a park in Baltimore where Hae Min Lee’s body was buried.

Adnan Syed, who was 17 at the time, has always maintained his innocence.

However, a motion filed in court in August said a newly recovered mobile phone document showed “the cell tower evidence was misleading and should have never been admitted at trial”.

The new hearing, a date for which has yet to be decided, will also hear evidence from a potential alibi for Adnan Syed.

Asia McClain, a friend of Adnan Syed’s who was not heard in the original trial, claims to have seen him in a library at the time of the suspected killing.

The fact that Adnan Syed’s first lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez, failed to submit this evidence in the original trial was one of the arguments used to win him the right to appeal in February.

Court papers show the hearing will also look at why Adnan Syed’s defense team did not present Asi McLain as a witness and whether there was “potential prosecutorial misconduct” as a result.

Bucharest Nightclub Fire Death Toll Rises to 41

The death toll from last weekend’s fire in Bucharest nightclub Colectiv has risen to 41, after nine more people died of their injuries, Romanian officials say.

Seven people died in Bucharest hospitals, while another two passed away in the Netherlands, where they had been treated.

The fire at Colectiv club in Romania’s capital Bucharest on October 30 was started by fireworks.

It led to mass protests and the resignation of the government led by PM Victor Ponta.

Three owners of the club have been arrested amid allegations that the venue was overcrowded, lacked the required number of emergency exits, and may not have been authorized to hold such a concert.

More than 100 people are still being treated, including 48 who are in critical condition.

Concerns that safety at the club was compromised because of corruption have further fuelled public anger against the political elite.

Thousands of protesters held a rally in Bucharest on November 6 – for the fourth consecutive day.

“But they wanted to see what I could do on a smaller scale because when it’s life sized and you put it on the table, they can’t see all the smaller details and the most important part on a human sculpture is a face.

“I thought I’d do a child. He’s the most famous child in the world and especially cute as well and very, very current.”

She has also created a miniature Kate Middleton in her bid to claim the title at the Cake International bash.

Lara Mason won a gold in 2013 for recreating Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean character, Captain Jack Sparrow.
