Grammy Nominations 2016: Kendrick Lamar Emerges as Frontrunner with 11 Nods

Kendrick Lamar is leading the 2016 Grammy nominations with 11 nods in total.

The hip-hop star is up for album of the year for To Pimp A Butterfly.

Kendrick Lamar’s competition comes from Taylor Swift, whose pop smash 1989 is finally nominated, a year after its release.

It came out too late to be eligible for last year’s awards, a fate which has befallen Adele’s 25 this time around.

Taylor Swift ties with R&B star The Weeknd for second place, with seven nominations apiece.

Ed Sheeran is up for two of the major prizes – song of the year and record of the year – for his emotive ballad Thinking Out Loud.

The former award goes to the writers (in this case Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge), while the record of the year category takes into account the performance and production of a hit song.

Other nominees for song of the year include The Weeknd’s breakthrough hit Can’t Feel My Face and Mark Ronson’s global smash Uptown Funk.Grammy nominations 2016

Taylor Swift is nominated for the tongue-in-cheek single Blank Space, as is Kendrick Lamar for Alright, the hope-filled centerpiece of his album.

Kendrick Lamar’s domination of the shortlist is “a testimony to his artistry,” said Neil Portnow, head of the Recording Academy.

“He’s someone that’s very serious about his art and about his craft, and has been working it for quite some time. And this is one of those instances where the work pays off.”

Kendrick Lamar’s other nominations include best rap album and best pop duo/group performance for Bad Blood – a remix of one of the tracks on Taylor Swift’s 1989.

The singer is also shortlisted twice for best rap song, including Kanye West’s All Day, which he co-wrote – along with 18 other credited performers, which could make an interesting moment on stage if West wins.

Among the most prestigious awards in music, the Grammys feature an exhaustive 83 categories in 30 genres, including the likes of best tropical Latin album and best jazz improvisation.

Outside the main categories, the late Amy Winehouse is up for her seventh Grammy thanks to Asif Kapadia’s revealing documentary on her life; while a deluxe reissue of The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers is up for best box set.

Justin Bieber, who had been considered a contender for some of the main prizes, only gets one nomination, for best dance recording; while Rihanna also misses out, despite her Paul McCartney duet FourFiveSeconds being tipped as a nominee for song of the year.

The Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on February 15, 2016, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Paris Attacks: U2 Pays Tribute to Victims in New Song

U2 have paid tribute to the Paris attack victims in a new song.

Last month’s Paris attacks left 130 people dead.

U2 were due to play in Paris in the days after the attacks, but the gigs were canceled.

They played the first rescheduled show on December 6.

“We stand together with the families of those killed in Paris,” said singer Bono, as victims’ names were projected on a huge video screen at the AccorHotels Arena.

“We stand together with the families of those killed in San Bernardino.”

As an encore, Bono wrapped himself in a tricolor flag and sang a verse of Belgian singer Jacques Brel’s Ne me quitte pas (Don’t Leave Me).

U2 will play a second Paris concert on December 7.

Before the gig, Bono revealed that the new song, titled Streets of Surrender, contains lines about Paris being the “city of liberty” and having “streets of love and pride”.

Bono told CNN he originally started writing the song for Italian singer Zucchero. He recited some of the lyrics: “Every man has two cities he needs to be. The one he can touch and the one he can’t see.

“The one where a stranger’s a friend. Every man’s got one city of liberty.

“For me it’s Paris. I love it. Every time I get lost down these ancient streets, I find myself again.

“You’re free, baby, baby, free now and for ever. It’s Christmas time, you can decide to forget or to remember.

“You’re free, baby, baby. I didn’t come here to fight you. I came down these streets of love and pride to surrender. The streets of surrender.”

Bono’s bandmate The Edge told the channel: “We think of music as the sound of freedom. We think rock and roll has a part to play, so going back to Paris to us is not just symbolic.

“I think we’re actually starting the process of resistance, of defiance against this movement.”

Bono and The Edge both have houses in France. The guitarist said: “It seemed like the target was culture and every kind of expression of the best of humanity – great music, restaurants, French food – everything that we hold dear.”

Bono said his camp had tried to help the Eagles of Death Metal after the violence.

“We tried to find a plane for them to get out and things like that,” he said.

“Turns out the best way to help them was finding them phones, because their phones had been left in the venue.”

Some reports suggest the Eagles of Death Metal, whose gig at the Bataclan venue was attacked by gunmen on November 13, would join U2 on stage.

However, U2 released a statement saying that was incorrect.

Austria: Tens of Thousands of Euros Fished from Danube River

Austrian police are investigating how bank notes worth tens of thousands of euros ended up in the Danube River.

The notes were found floating down the river in Vienna on December 5, leading one passer-by to jump in and salvage the money.

According to police, the recovered money was worth some €100,000 ($108,000).

Police also said there were no crimes were recorded in the area and that it was not clear where the money originated.Euro fishing Danube River

According to local reports, officers had first believed the money – made up of €500 and €100 notes – was counterfeit, but they now believe the notes to be genuine.

They were first alerted when bystanders spotted a boy in the river on December 5. Fearing he was attempting suicide, they called police, only to find he was trying to retrieve the money.

Anyone who finds money and hands it to police in Austria is entitled to keep between 5% and 10% of the total.

However, if the owner is not found within a year, the whole sum will be handed to the boy.

Beijing Issues First Red Alert over Smog Levels

Beijing authorities have decided to close schools and to stop outdoor construction after the Chinese capital issued its first “red alert” over smog levels.

The red alert is the highest possible, and has not been used in Beijing before, the state-run Xinhua news agency says.

Chinese authorities expect more than three consecutive days of severe smog.

Cars with odd and even number plates will be banned from driving on alternate days.

The alert comes as China, the world’s largest polluter, takes part in talks on carbon emissions in Paris.

Current pollution levels in Beijing are actually lower than last week’s, but the red alert has been placed because of levels expected over the coming days.

The order will last from 07:00 local time on December 8 until 12:00 on December 10, when a cold front is expected to arrive and clear the smog.

China’s CCTV news channel reported at the weekend that some parts of Beijing had visibility of only 660ft.Beijing red alert over pollution

Coal-powered industries and heating systems, as well as vehicle emissions and dust from construction sites, all contribute to the smog which has been exacerbated by humidity and a lack of wind.

At 18:00 local time on December 7, the air pollution monitor operated by the US Embassy in Beijing reported that the intensity of the poisonous, tiny particles of PM 2.5 was 10 times above the recommended limit.

The level in Beijing reached more than 256 micrograms per cubic meter in some of the worst-affected areas. The World Health Organization considers 25 micrograms per cubic meter to be a safe level.

Activists said the level hit 1,400 micrograms per cubic meter in the north-east city of Shenyang last month, saying it was the worst seen in China.

Last week, activists from Greenpeace had urged the Chinese government to declare a red alert. Another Chinese city, Nanjing, issued a red alert in December 2013.

On November 30, Beijing issued an orange alert – the second-highest of the four-tier system adopted in 2013.

Correspondents say Chinese officials had been unwilling to commit to hard targets on reducing carbon emissions, but have now realized that the dependence on fossil fuels has to stop.

Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to take action on the emissions at the current global climate change talks in Paris.

Holly Woodlawn Dies of Cancer Aged 69

Holly Woodlawn has died of cancer at the age of 69.

The Puerto-Rico born transgender actress inspired Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side and appeared in Andy Warhol’s 70s movies Trash and Women in Revolt.

Lou Reed’s opening lyrics read: “Holly came from Miami, F-L-A / Hitchhiked her way across the USA / Plucked her eyebrows on the way / Shaved her legs, and then he was a she.”

Holly Woodlawn died on December 6 in Los Angeles, her friend Mariela Huerta said.

A memorial service is expected to be held in the city.

Holly Woodlawn, born Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl, took on her new name after leaving home aged 15 and hitchhiking to New York City.

She told the Guardian in 2007 of her brief fame after appearing in Warhol’s films: “I was very happy when I gradually became a Warhol superstar. I felt like Elizabeth Taylor!

“Little did I realize that not only would there be no money, but that your star would flicker for two seconds and that was it. But it was worth it, the drugs, the parties, it was fabulous.”

Holly Woodlawn also explained that she did not get to know Lou Reed properly until after the song’s 1972 release.

Despite receiving critical acclaim for her film work, she did not find mainstream success.

Holly Woodlawn also appeared in 90s independent movies Twin Falls Idaho and Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss, as well as the Golden Globe-winning series Transparent, about the father of an LA family who comes out as transgender.

Joe Dallesandro, who starred in Trash, tweeted on December 6: “Holly Woodlawn was in Room 306 when I arrived to see her today. At 3:06pm LA time, she passed away.”

He also said on Facebook that he had visited in her in a hospice, adding: “I was next to her talking and telling her all the love that was being sent her way from everyone. It was like she knew I was there.”

They played a couple in Trash, produced by Andy Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey, living in the fringes of New York’s East Village, scrounging for food and drugs.

According to Mariela Huerta, Holly Woodlawn, who had been battling brain and liver cancer, had no surviving relatives.

Venezuela Elections 2015: Opposition Wins Majority in National Assembly

Venezuela’s opposition coalition has won a majority of seats in the National Assembly, overturning nearly two decades of dominance by the Socialists of President Nicolas Maduro.

Five hours after polling ended, the National Electoral Council announced the opposition had won 99 seats.

President Nicolas Maduro has admitted defeat, recognizing “these adverse results”.

It is the worst-ever defeat for the leftist movement founded by former leader Hugo Chavez in 1999.

The Socialists have gained 46 seats, with another 22 yet to be declared.

Results arrived much later than expected, five hours after polls closed. Fireworks erupted over the capital, Caracas, soon after.Venezuela elections results 2015

Among the campaign issues were chronic food shortages of staples – such as milk, rice, coffee, sugar, corn flour and cooking oil.

Venezuela has been hit hard by the continuing low price of oil, its main export. It also has the continent’s highest inflation rate.

President Nicolas Maduro has blamed the situation on an “economic war” waged by the opposition.

“We have come with our morals and our ethics to recognize these adverse results, to accept them and to say to our Venezuela that the constitution and democracy have triumphed.

“We have lost a battle today, but the struggle to build a new society is just beginning,” Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s president and head of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, added.

Henrique Capriles, a leading opposition figure in the Democratic Unity Roundtable and a former presidential challenger, tweeted: “The results are as we hoped. Venezuela has won. It’s irreversible.”

Jesus Torrealba, opposition coalition chief, said: “Venezuela wanted a change and that change came. A new majority expressed itself and sent a clear and resounding message.”

The opposition alliance, made up of centrist and conservative parties, is confident of ultimately taking at least 112 seats after 16 years of socialist control.

The results also give stronger momentum to the opposition should it wish to call a referendum on Nicolas Maduro’s future. This could take place only when his presidency reaches its halfway point in April next year.

However, under Venezuela’s presidential system the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) will still be a powerful force, as it controls many municipalities.

The next presidential election is due in April 2019.

San Bernardino Shooting: Barack Obama Delivers Rare Oval Office Address

President Barack Obama has delivered a rare Oval Office address after the last week’s San Bernardino attack that left 14 dead.

Barack Obama said the killings were “an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people”.

“Freedom is more powerful than fear,” the president said, warning that falling prey to divisiveness in American society would play into the hands of extremists.

Barack Obama also said the US must make it harder for potential attackers to obtain guns.

The president vowed that the US would overcome the evolving threat of terrorism, but warned that Americans “cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam”.Barack Obama Oval Office address December 2015

“If we’re to succeed in defeating terrorism, we must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies, rather than push them away through suspicion and hate,” Barack Obama said.

He reminded his audience that Muslim-Americans were part of US society.

“And, yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country. We have to remember that,” he said.

Barack Obama warned that turning against America’s Muslim communities would be exactly what Islamist extremists in the so-called Islamic State group want.

The president told Americans that terrorism had entered a new phase, from large scale attacks by al-Qaeda to less complicated attacks by radicalized individuals.

He said the US would draw upon “every aspect of American power” to combat ISIS.

Barack Obama underscored that the US and its allies have increased their bombing of Islamic State oil infrastructure and would continue to train and equip moderate rebels in Iraq and Syria.

“Our military will continue to hunt down terrorist plotters in any country where it is necessary,” he said.

Barack Obama added that there are a number of things that can be done on home soil to combat terrorism.

He called for stricter gun control and said he had ordered the Departments of State and Homeland Security to review the K-1 fiancé visa program under which the female attacker in San Bernardino originally entered the US.

This was only the third Oval Office address of Barack Obama’s presidency – they are reserved for events of national importance.

Barack Obama’s speech was in response to a mass shooting by a married couple that left 14 dead.

Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife Tashfeen Malik, 29, opened fire on an office Christmas party and were later killed in a shootout with police.

In his speech, the president characterized ISIS as “thugs and killers”, adding: “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it.”

The group said in a radio broadcast that the couple that Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were ISIS supporters, but gave no indication that ISIS was involved in the attack’s planning.

The FBI is also looking into reports Tashfeen Malik posted a message on Facebook pledging allegiance to ISIS around the time of the attacks.

Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik used handguns and semi-automatic weapons that had been legally purchased in the US, police say.

Bomb equipment, weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition were later found in their home.

The San Bernardino attack is the deadliest mass shooting in the US since 26 people were killed at a school in Connecticut in 2012.

The authorities said there was no indication so far the killers were part of an “organized group or formed part of a broader terrorist cell”.

France Regional Elections 2015: Marine Le Pen’s Front National Leads First Round

Marine Le Pen’s Front National (National Front) appears to have made big gains in France’s first round of regional elections, estimates show.

They put the far-right National Front ahead in at least six of 13 regions in mainland France.

The elections are the first electoral test since last month’s Paris attacks, in which 130 people were killed.

The center-right Republicans party led by former President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared to be in second place ahead of the governing Socialist Party.

A second round of voting will be held on December 13.

As the results became clear, the Socialist party said it was withdrawing from the second round in at least two regions, in the north and the south, to try to block a run-off victory for the FN.

Exit polls from December 2 vote predicted that the FN had won 30.8% of the vote, followed by Nicolas Sarkozy’s Republicans on 27.2% and President Francois Hollande’s Socialists with 22.7%.

FN leader Marine Le Pen, who stood in the northern region of Nord-Pas-De-Calais-Picardie, and her niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen, who stood in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur in the south, both looked to have won more than 40% of the vote, polls predicted, breaking previous records for the party.

Marine Le Pen told supporters it was a “magnificent result” which proved the FN was “without contest the first party of France”.

In previous years, the center-right opposition and governing Socialist party have worked together to block the FN.

However, Nicolas Sarkozy said there would be no “tactical alliances” in the second round.

French regions have wide powers over local transport, education and economic development.

The far right has been steadily gaining votes over the past few years from both left- and right-wing sympathizers through a mix of nationalist and pro-welfare policies.

In the lead-up to the election, opinion polls suggested that the popularity of the anti-immigration, anti-EU National Front had increased since the Paris attacks on November 13.

The election has been held under a state of emergency declared after the Paris attacks, which were claimed by Islamic State militants.

The FN is hoping a strong performance will boost Marine Le Pen’s chances for the 2017 presidential election.

Meanwhile, the government’s response to the Paris attacks has boosted President Francois Hollande’s approval ratings – they have soared more than 30 percentage points to 50%.

However, this surge in personal popularity has so far not translated into greater approval for Francois Hollande’s Socialist Party, which is trailing with about 22%.

PM Manuel Valls made an “appeal to patriotism” on December 3 in an effort to rally the Socialist vote.

Assemblies are being elected in the 13 regions of metropolitan France and in four overseas territories.

San Jose Galleon Wreck: Colombia Finds Holy Grail of Shipwrecks

Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos has announced the discovery of San Jose galleon’s wreck off the Colombian coast.

The San Jose galleon was a Spanish ship laden with treasure that was sunk by the British more than 300 years ago.

“Great news! We have found the San Jose galleon,” President Juan Manuel Santos tweeted.

The wreck was discovered near the port city of Cartagena.

It has been described as the holy grail of shipwrecks, as the ship was carrying one of the largest amounts of valuables ever to have been lost at sea.

The Colombian galleon said the cargo was worth at least $1 billion.San Jose galleon wreck found in Colombia

The San Jose was carrying gold, silver, gems and jewellery collected in the South American colonies to be shipped to Spain’s king to help finance his war of succession against the British when it was sunk in June 1708.

The vessel was attacked by a British warship just outside Cartagena.

Colombian officials would not reveal the precise location of the wreck, but Juan Manuel Santos said the find “constitutes one of the greatest – if not the biggest, as some say – discoveries of submerged patrimony in the history of mankind”.

The president also said that a museum would be built in Cartagena to house the ship’s treasures.

Ownership of the wreck has been the subject of a long-running legal row.

The Colombian government did not mention its long-running quarrel with US-based salvage company Sea Search Armada (SSA) over claims to the treasure.

A group now owned by SSA said in 1981 that it had located the area in which the ship sank.

SSA has been claiming billions of dollars for breach of contract from the Colombian government, but in 2011 an American court ruled that the galleon was the property of the Colombian state.

Ringo Starr Memorabilia Raises $9.2 Million at Auction

A Ringo Starr memorabilia has raised a total of $9.2 million at Julien’s Auctions.

The auction lot included more than 1,300 clothes, instruments, pieces of jewellery and other items owned by the Beatle.

The highlight of the sale was a drum kit played by Ringo Starr on many Beatles hits, which fetched $2.1 million.

A Rickenbacker guitar once owned by John Lennon made $910,000.

Ringo Starr’s copy of The White Album, numbered 0000001, sold for $790,000 – which is thought to make it the most expensive record ever sold.

Julien’s Auctions said it surpassed the previous world record, set when Elvis Presley’s first acetate recording sold for $300,000 earlier this year.

Ringo Starr’s LP was the first mono copy of The White Album to be manufactured in the UK.

It was widely known that the band members kept the first four copies, but until recently it was assumed that John Lennon had owned the first.

Paul McCartney told his official biographer: “John got 0000001 because he shouted loudest. He said, <<Bagsy number one!>>”

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to Ringo Starr and wife Barbara Bach’s charity The Lotus Foundation, which says it aims to advance “social welfare” in a wide range of areas including substance abuse, cancer, cerebral palsy, domestic abuse and animal protection.

Jimmy Carter Announces He Is Cancer-Free

Ex-President Jimmy Carter has announced in a statement that his brain cancer is gone.

“My most recent MRI brain scan did not reveal any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones,” Jimmy Carter, 91, said.

The former president first announced the news during a Sunday school class in Plains, Georgia.

Jimmy Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981 and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, revealed his illness in August.Jimmy Carter cancer free

Doctors have been treating four small melanoma lesions on his brain.

Last month, Jimmy Carter said he was responding well to treatment and there were no signs of further cancer growth.

Jill Stuckey, a member of the congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Jimmy Carter had been teaching the class of about 350 people when he made the announcement.

“He said he got a scan this week and the cancer was gone,” she said.

“The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause.”

Jimmy Carter revealed in August that cancer initially found in his liver had spread to four spots on his brain. The lesion on his liver was removed on August 12.

After leaving the White House, Jimmy Carter founded the Carter Center, which focuses on human-rights efforts and political mediation.

He has remained active with the center ever since.

Jimmy Carter – a Georgia Democrat – won the Nobel Peace prize for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts and his work with human rights and democracy initiatives.

Venezuela Elections 2015: First Serious Challenge to Governing Socialists

Venezuelans are voting in congressional elections that are seen as the first serious challenge to the governing socialists in 17 years.

According to opinion polls, a broad opposition coalition could capitalize on widespread frustration over food shortages, inflation and crime.

Nicolas Maduro’s governing PSUV, however, retains wide support in rural areas, and will continue to control the presidency.

Voters will be electing all 167 National Assembly members.

Even if the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable captures a majority in the assembly, its power will be limited.

However, a win for the coalition – which includes center-left and centre-right groups – could mark a potential political shift in Venezuela.

The elections are widely regarded as a referendum on President Nicolas Maduro, the handpicked successor of the late president Hugo Chavez, and the party’s socialist policies.Venezuela elections 2015

The opposition accuses the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) of mismanaging the economy and of squandering the country’s oil wealth.

Nicolas Maduro says his party defends the interests of ordinary Venezuelans and wants to complete Hugo Chavez’s “Bolivarian Revolution”.

“They say they’re winning in the polls – it’s the same story of the last 17 years,” Nicolas Maduro said at one election rally.

“Let them win in the polls, we will win in the streets.”

Among the concerns are chronic food shortages of staples – such as milk, rice, coffee, sugar, corn flour and cooking oil.

Nicolas Maduro has blamed the situation on an “economic war” waged against his government by the opposition.

The opposition also accuses the government of increasing authoritarianism.

Earlier this year opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was given a 13-year prison sentence for inciting violence – a charge critics say was politically motivated.

Venezuela has invited election monitors from regional body UNASUR but has rejected those from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the EU.

France Regional Elections 2015: First Major Polls since Paris Attacks

France is voting in regional elections, the first electoral test since last month’s Paris attacks, in which 130 people were killed.

According to opinion polls, there will be a strong showing for the far-right National Front (FN).

The center-right led by former President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to win in most regions at the expense of the governing Socialist Party.

December 6 first round will be followed by a run-off on December 13.

French regions have wide powers over local transport, education and economic development.

The election is also being closely watched after opinion polls suggested the popularity of the anti-immigration, anti-EU National Front had increased since the attacks on November 13.France regional elections 2015

National Front (FN) leader Marine Le Pen is likely to win in the northern region of Nord-Pas-De-Calais-Picardie, while her niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen is a leading contender in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur in the south.

It would be the first time the FN has captured any of France’s regions. The party is hoping a strong performance will boost Marine Le Pen’s chances for the 2017 presidential election.

Both Nicolas Sarkozy’s Les Republicains party and the FN appear to be heading for about 30% of votes, according to opinion polls, but President Francois Hollande’s Socialist Party is trailing on about 22%.

PM Manuel Valls made an “appeal to patriotism” on December 3 in an effort to rally the Socialist vote.

The election is being held under a state of emergency which was declared after the Paris attacks.

On December 4, the Belgian prosecutor’s office said police were seeking two new suspects accused of aiding the fugitive suspect from the Paris attacks Salah Abdeslam, who lived in Belgium.

They are “armed and dangerous” and are thought to have helped Salah Abdeslam travel to Hungary in September.

Investigators say Salah Abdeslam may have driven the suicide bombers at the Stade de France to their target on the night of the Paris attacks.

However, Salah Abdeslam’s precise role in the attacks remains unclear. There are suggestions he was meant to carry out a suicide attack on the night but decided against it.

Mark Zuckerberg Defends Facebook Share Giveaway

Mark Zuckerberg has defended the unusual company structure chosen for the eye-catching philanthropic venture launched to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Max.

He will give away 99% of his stake in Facebook, worth $45 billion, to fund the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Rather than set up a simple charity, the Facebook founder formed a limited liability company (LLC) to administer the money.

An LLC brings certain tax exemptions but also allows investment for profit.

Photo Facebook

Critics have said the structure of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative could provide a way for Mark Zuckerberg to avoid paying tax on the sale of his shares. They have also questioned why he did not set up a not-for-profit charity instead.

An LLC allows Mark Zuckerberg to keep hold of the voting and allocation of the shares he puts into it.

In a Facebook post on December 3, Mark Zuckerberg explained his reasons for creating an LLC instead of a not-for-profit organization and said he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, will pay capital gains taxes when their shares are sold by the company.

“By using an LLC instead of a traditional foundation, we receive no tax benefit from transferring our shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, but we gain flexibility to execute our mission more effectively,” he said.

“In fact, if we transferred our shares to a traditional foundation, then we would have received an immediate tax benefit, but by using an LLC we do not.

“And just like everyone else, we will pay capital gains taxes when our shares are sold by the LLC,” Mark Zuckerberg added.

The new charitable organization is aimed at “advancing human potential and promoting equality for all children in the next generation”.

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s shares will be donated over the course of their lives. They have already committed $1.6 billion to philanthropic causes according to a Facebook statement.

Kobe Bryant Wants to Play at Rio 2016 after Announcing Retirement

Kobe Bryant has said he would love to represent the US at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The 37-year-old LA Lakers star, regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history, announced this week he would retire at the end of the NBA season.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been hindered by injuries in recent seasons but said he would “love to play” in Rio if fit enough.

“If my body can’t do it, there’s no sense doing it,” Kobe Bryant said.

The five-time NBA champion has scored 32,734 points during a 20-year career with the Lakers to rank third on the NBA’s all-time list.

Kobe Bryant, who won gold with the US team in 2008 and 2012, told ESPN Radio: “I would love nothing more than to be in an international environment and be around some of the other great athletes one more time.”

Should the Lakers fail to make the end-of-season play-offs, Kobe Bryant’s final game is set to be at home against Utah on April 13. The Olympics will be held four months later, between August 5 and 21.

Kobe Bryant is one of 34 players in the US men’s national team pool, from which only 12 can be selected for Rio.

Greece Crisis: Parliament Passes Austere 2016 Budget

Greek parliament has approved the 2016 budget that includes sharp spending cuts and some tax increases amid economic recession.

The austere budget was passed with a majority of only eight votes – 153 to 145.

“This budget is a difficult task for a government that wants to leave its mark with social justice,” PM Alexis Tsipras told lawmakers.

Alexis Tsipras agreed to a batch of economic reforms in August to secure a euro zone bailout of up to €86 billion ($93 billion).Greece austerity budget

His leftist-led government has been under pressure to deliver tangible benefits to its poorest citizens since the agreement.

Greece’s budget makes €5.7 billion in public spending cuts including €1.8 billion from pensions and €500 million from defense. It also includes tax increases of just over €2 billion.

Despite the cuts, the budget will still have a greater deficit than the 2015 budget.

Earlier this year the country reluctantly agreed to the strict conditions of its third international bailout in five years.

After losing his majority in August as a result, Alexis Tsipras called an election and was returned to power in September with 35% of the vote.

Representatives of the euro zone, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) return to Greece on December 7 for more talks about pending reforms of the pension and tax systems and public administration.

The euro zone has also held out to Greece the possibility of long-term debt relief after a review of progress under the new bailout.

However, it has said that relief would come in the form of longer delays before repayments start or finish, not a reduction – or so-called “haircut” – in the amount that has to be repaid.

Vatican Orders First Ever External Audit of Assets

The Vatican announces it has ordered the first ever external audit of its assets as part of Pope Francis’ efforts to reform the Roman Catholic Church.

Accounting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers will start work immediately, a Vatican spokesman said.

Pope Francis has promised to make the Vatican’s finances more transparent after a series of scandals.

In 2014, the pontiff created a new ministry to oversee papal finances, headed by Cardinal George Pell.

Cardinal George Pell later said he had discovered millions of euros “tucked away”.

While he did not say any wrongdoing had occurred, he added Vatican departments long had “an almost free hand” with their finances.

Turning to an external auditor puts the Vatican more in line with international standards.

PwC will review the Vatican’s consolidated financial statements, spokesman Federico Lombardi said, which includes assets, income and expenses.

Author Gianluigi Nuzzi obtained secret recordings of Pope Francis this year suggesting the pontiff had grown exasperated at vested interests in the Vatican.

“If we don’t know how to look after money, which you can see, how can we look after the souls of the faithful, which you can’t see?” Pope Francis told clerics in 2013, the recordings said.

Iraq: Turkish Ambassador Summoned over Mosul Troops

Iraq’s foreign ministry has summoned the Turkish ambassador to demand the withdrawal of Turkish troops sent to an area near the northern city of Mosul.

According to the Iraqi foreign ministry, the troops had entered Iraq without Baghdad’s consent and that Iraq considered it “a hostile act”.

Turkey says it deployed 150 soldiers in the town of Bashiqa year to train Iraqi Kurdish forces fighting ISIS.Turkish troops Mosul

Mosul has been under the control of ISIS militants since 2014.

Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu described the deployment as a routine troop rotation. He said Turkish forces had set up a camp near Mosul a year ago in co-ordination with Iraq.

“This camp was established as a training camp for a force of local volunteers fighting terrorism,” he said.

Earlier, Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi’s office said the move was a “serious breach of Iraqi sovereignty”.

The statement called on Turkey to “respect good neighborly relations and to withdraw immediately from the Iraqi territory”.

Turkey enjoys close relations with autonomous Kurdish regions in Iraq, although it views Syrian Kurdish groups over the border as hostile, analysts say.

The fall of Mosul was a key moment in the rise of ISIS and an Iraqi government offensive to retake the city has been repeatedly put back.

US Economy Gains 211,000 Jobs in November 2015

US economy added 211,000 jobs in November 2015, slightly above expectations.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the jobless rate held at its seven-and-a-half year low of 5%.

The jobs stats showed that the construction, food services and retail sectors all saw healthy job increases.

The robust figures could now pave the way for the first US interest rate rise in close to 10 years later this month.US jobs November 2015

Labor market strength is an important consideration for the Federal Reserve over whether to move interest rates.

On December 3, Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s signaled to a joint Congressional committee that the Federal Reserve was on track for a December rates rise.

The Fed, whose policy-setting committee will meet on December 15 and 16, cut rates to near-zero in December 2008 in response to the financial crisis.

The labor bureau also revised September and October’s figures to show 35,000 more jobs than had been previously reported.

Meanwhile, average hourly earnings increased by four cents to $25.25, or 0.2%, following a 0.4% rise in October.

Sectors which did not fare well in November were manufacturing, which shed 1,000 posts, and mining, which lost 11,000 positions.

Mission E: Porsche Unveils All-Electric Sports Car Project

Porsche has unveiled its plans to build an all-electric car aimed at challenging Tesla’s dominance of the battery-powered sports car market.

The German automaker said it would create more than 1,000 jobs via a €700 million investment in new facilities and assembly line.

Porsche’s Mission E, revealed as a concept car earlier this year, is due to go on sale by 2019.

The four-door car’s range will be 310 miles, and hit 62mph in 3.5 seconds.

This pitches the Mission E – a name unlikely to stay once the launch date nears – against Tesla’s powerful Model S.Porsche Mission E electric car

Porsche is owned by Volkswagen Group, currently embroiled in Dieselgate scandal, which has said it would invest in a range of all-electric and hybrid vehicles across its brands over the next few years.

Dr. Oliver Blume, chairman of Porsche’s executive board said putting Mission E into full development was the “beginning of a new chapter in the history of the sports car”.

Porsche said the car would be charged via an 800-volt unit specially developed for the vehicle, which is twice as powerful as today’s quick-charge system.

The lithium-ion batteries integrated within the vehicle floor will have enough power for 80% of its mileage range after 15 minutes charging, Porsche said in a statement. The vehicle can optionally be “refueled” wirelessly by induction via a coil set into a garage floor.

The four-seat car features energy storage technology derived from the Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid race car.

The €700 Mission E investment was part of a €1 billion spending plan on new facilities announced by Porsche on December 4.

Caitlyn Jenner Sued For Fatal Car Crash

Caitlyn Jenner has been sued by Hummer crash victims in a new lawsuit from last February’s fatal accident.

The reality star, then known Bruce Jenner, caused a chain-reaction accident on Pacific Coast Highway after hitting a Lexus driven by Kim Howe and sending it into oncoming traffic.

Kim Howe’s car was then hit by a Hummer, leading to her death.

While Kim Howe’s family already has a suit against Bruce Jenner pending, as does the driver of a Prius Jenner struck after first hitting the Lexus, the reality star is now being sued by the occupants of the Hummer.

The Wolf-Millesi family says they had five relatives in the Hummer, all of whom were injured physically and emotionally as a result of the crash. One family member claims to have suffered a severe cervical fracture that has left her permanently disabled.

Another car passenger says he suffered blunt force trauma, while a different individual had severe nerve damage. Perhaps most disturbingly, a month-old newborn was in the car as well, and was not responsive at the scene, leading the baby to be rushed to the hospital. The child survived, but it is not clear if he or she suffered injuries.

According to TMZ, the legal documents state: “The emotional effects of being involved in a collision that has taken the life of another has caused tremendous distress and suffering.”

All is attributed to Caitlyn Jenner, whom the lawsuit blames for driving recklessly at an unsafe speed. The Wolf-Millesi family is seeking unspecified damages, TMZ reports.

The filing comes more than two months after the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced it would not pursue criminal charges against Caitlyn Jenner.

Coca-Cola Mexico under Fire for Racist Commercial

Coca-Cola Mexico comes under fire for racist implications of a new commercial depicting young white people on a mission to “share Coke with a smile” in a remote area of Oaxaca.

Consumer rights and health groups, in addition to Coke fans, have urged the Mexican government to pull the ad from air just days after its release.

Some critics are calling the spot an insult to indigenous groups for its premise-that a group of model-looking Caucasian people arrive to partake in a “faux philanthropy” service project of handing out sodas and building a Coke-themed Christmas tree for locals.

In the new ad, Coca-Cola says the #AbreTuCorazon (Open Your Heart) campaign is meant to “break down prejudice and share”.Coca Cola Mexico racist commercial

Then it goes on to say: “This Christmas a group of young people decided to give something very special to the indigenous community of Totontepec (Villa) de Morelos in Oaxaca. You, too, open your heart.” These messages display on screen as blond women and men cheerfully construct a red wooden tree and seemingly bring joy to the locals of the community.

The Alliance for Food Health-a coalition of consumer rights and health organizations-has called on the Mexican government to block the commercial entirely, arguing that it both attacks the dignity of indigenous people and contributes to the deteriorating health of Mexican communities, the AP reports.

Meanwhile, many others have taken to social media with their complaints about the controversial spot.

Coca-Cola has removed the ad from its YouTube channel and all planned televised spots, telling teleSUR that its message was misinterpreted.

San Bernardino Shooting: Tashfeen Malik Pledged Allegiance to ISIS Leader

Tashfeen Malik – the woman involved in San Bernardino deadly gun attack – pledged allegiance to ISIS leader on Facebook, US officials say.

She made the post under an account with a different name, the officials told US media.

Fourteen people were killed and 21 wounded in December 2 attack.

Tashfeen Malik, 27, and her husband Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, died in a shootout with police after the killings at San Bernardino, east of Los Angeles.

According to the New York Times, there was no evidence that ISIS had directed the couple in the attack.Tashfeen Malik San Bernardino shooting

“At this point we believe they were more self-radicalised and inspired by the group than actually told to do the shooting,” the newspaper quoted an official as saying.

Tashfeen Malik is reported to have posted the message on Facebook in support of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The post has since been removed.

On December 4, the couple’s landlord opened their apartment to the media, prompting journalists and camera crews to rush in and survey the scene.

After the attack at the Inland Regional Center social services agency, bomb equipment, weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found in the couple’s home.

Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook had destroyed computer hard drives and other electronic equipment before the rampage took place, a US government source said on December 4.

Investigators are also said to be following up a report that Syed Rizwan Farook had argued with a colleague at work who denounced the “inherent dangers of Islam”.

Tashfeen Malik was born in Pakistan and had recently lived in Saudi Arabia.

Intelligence officials in Pakistan have contacted relatives there, a family member quoted by Reuters said.

Syed Farook, who worked as an inspector for San Bernardino’s environmental health department, was the son of Pakistani immigrants and born in the US state of Illinois.

Police said between 75 and 80 people were attending a party at the center when the shooting began.

The identities of the victims have since been released by San Bernardino’s coroner. The youngest was 26 and the oldest was 60.

San Bernardino is the deadliest mass shooting in the US since 26 people were killed at a school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.
