How to Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse

Watching a total solar eclipse is a rare and memorable experience. However, without the right precautions, it can also be dangerous.

The Sun’s rays are so intense you can feel their warmth from 150 million km away. That’s why looking at the Sun directly, even for a few seconds, can seriously damage your eyes. It allows ultraviolet (UV) light to flood in and burn the light-sensitive cells – causing potentially permanent blurry vision and blind spots.

Watching an eclipse with normal sunglasses provides virtually no protection. In fact, they trick your eyes to let in more light, so they can cause even more damage. But there are three easy ways to view an eclipse safely that can be set up in a few minutes.

Build a pinhole projector

The safest way to view a solar eclipse is to project it onto a piece of paper. Using a cardboard box, you can make a pinhole projector.

You will need:

A long cardboard box, a sheet of white paper, some aluminum foil, a craft knife, scissors, a drawing pin, duct tape and glue. If you can’t find a long box then try taping two smaller boxes together.

Safety measures:

Remember: DO NOT look directly at the Sun without appropriate protection, such as special eclipse glasses. Children should get an adult to help build and use this projector. Take extra care when using sharp tools like craft knifes and scissors.

What will you see?

A bright beam of sunlight will project onto the paper at the far end of the box. This is the Sun’s disc. When an eclipse occurs you’ll see an image of the Moon’s disc sweeping across your projection. The size of the image will be about one hundredth of the length of the box – so the longer the box, the bigger the projected image.

Using binoculars safely

Pinhole viewers are cheap and easy to make. However, with a bit more time you can get a much better image by projecting the Sun with binoculars. The advantage of this method is that you can watch the eclipse with others as the projected image is much bigger.

You will need:

A pair of large binoculars (a telescope works just as well), a tripod (or another sturdy object you can securely fix the binoculars to), a sheet of white paper, a large piece of cardboard, scissors, some duct tape and some large plain paper or a flip-chart.

Safety measures:

Binoculars and telescopes concentrate sunlight, so never directly look at the Sun with them, as you will permanently damage your eyes. Don’t look directly at the Sun without appropriate protection, such as special eclipse glasses. Keep the binoculars lenses covered until you are ready to use them as this will avoid them getting hot. Children should get an adult to help build and use this projector. Take extra care when using sharp tools like scissors.

What will you see?

As sunlight shines through the binoculars, an image of the Sun will be projected onto your flip-chart. Adjust the distance between the binoculars and the flip-chart until your image is about the size of a small plate. If it’s blurry, focus your binoculars until it becomes sharp. While you wait for the eclipse to happen, look out for dark specks and patterns in your projection – these are sunspots.

Looking directly at the Sun

Watching an eclipse directly is possible – but it’s vital to protect your eyes with the correct equipment.

Never look at the Sun unless you are wearing a pair of special eclipse glasses. Check they meet required safety standards.

Test their condition by putting them on as you’re looking away from the Sun. You shouldn’t be able to see anything. If any light is entering through the glasses, this could mean that they are scratched and won’t provide the right protection. When you’re satisfied the glasses aren’t damaged, turn to look at the Sun. This should be the only thing you can see – a big, orange globe surrounded by a black sky.

Don’t look at the Sun through a pair of binoculars or a camera, as they will concentrate the Sun’s powerful rays into your eye. If you want to use equipment like this, you need a professional solar filter that fits tightly onto the front lenses.

Total Solar Eclipse 2017: Deep Shadow to Sweep over US from Oregon to South Carolina

The US is preparing for the spectacular sight of a total solar eclipse.

The Moon is set to pass in front of the Sun, casting a deep shadow that will sweep over the US from Oregon in the west to South Carolina in the east.

It is the first such event since 1918 where the path of darkness crosses both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

It is also the first total solar eclipse to make landfall exclusively in the US since independence in 1776.

People lucky enough to be directly in the path of deepest shadow (“totality”) – and blessed with a clear sky – will witness the Sun’s light blocked out for up to two minutes and 40 seconds.

Those who stand off to the side will experience a partial eclipse, which on this occasion will encompass all of North America and northern parts of South America.

There are even parts of Western Europe that will snatch a sight of the Moon’s disc taking a bite out of the Sun just as it sets.

Solar Eclipse: Eye experts warn of selfie danger

Total lunar eclipse: Best places to see this year’s first full lunar eclipse

Wherever people watch the total solar eclipse, they are urged to take care. Looking directly at the Sun with the naked eye can be dangerous.

Many commentators believe August 21 eclipse will prove to be the most observed, most photographed, and best documented such event in human history.

It will certainly challenge the numbers that saw the 2009 eclipse that swept across India and China.

More than 12 million people live in the 70 mile-wide path of totality. Nearly four times that many live within a two-hour’s drive, and over 200 million live within a day’s drive.

State and local authorities have been preparing for August 21 as if they were about to confront the fallout from some natural disaster.

Carbondale in Illinois has billed itself as the “Eclipse Crossroads of America” because it is in the path of darkness both on August 21 and when the next US eclipse occurs in 2024.

Given this status, Carbondale authorities anticipate a huge influx of visitors. Its regular population numbers 26,000 people, but for August 21 more than 60,000 extra car parking spaces have been organized.

It is not just urban settlements that will be stretched; the National Park Service has been bringing truck loads of portable toilets on to its lands.

Many skywatchers will be waiting until as late as possible before deciding where to go, based on up-to-date weather forecasts. Many of those who planned ahead will have consulted historical weather data.

This information suggests the highest probability of clear skies will be in the northwest. Madras in Oregon is a favorite.

The time of year and its position leeward of the Cascade Mountains mean it would expect a more than 70% chance of an unobstructed view of the eclipse. In contrast, the further east along the path of totality, the higher the historical probability of cloud.

The “eclipse show” for land-dwellers begins on the Oregon coast at 09:05 local time when skywatchers will see the Moon start to traverse the Sun. Totality is reached at 10:16 and, assuming none of the region’s famous coastal fogs are in attendance, people will get one minute and 59 seconds of full darkness.

The Moon’s shadow then races across the continent through 13 more states (less than two square kilometers of the extreme southwest of Iowa is in the path) – a journey that will take roughly 90 minutes.

The place that will experience the longest period of totality (2 minutes and 40 seconds) is about 6 miles south of Carbondale, Illinois.

The last region in the path of deepest shadow is South Carolina. The Atlantic coastal city of Charleston experiences its eclipse at 14:47 local time.

It is around this time that Europeans will be catching their partial view of the event.

Ireland, Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland see a full partial eclipse.

Jerry Lewis Dies in Las Vegas Aged 91

Jerry Lewis, one of Hollywood’s most successful comedians, has died at the age of 91, his family announced.

In a statement, Jerry Lewis’ family said he died of natural causes at his home in Las Vegas on August 20.

Jerry Lewis’s ten-year partnership with Dean Martin saw them star in 16 films and achieve huge box office success.

The comedian became the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, chalking up hits such as The Bell Boy, Cinderfella and The Nutty Professor.

Other notable successes included The King of Comedy in 1983, in which he played a talk show host stalked by Robert de Niro.

Fellow celebrities paid tribute as news of Jerry Lewis’ death broke. Whoopi Goldberg called it “a gain for heaven, but big loss for comedy”.

Jim Carrey, whose comedy style was strongly influenced by Jerry Lewis, said: “That fool was no dummy. Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius an unfathomable blessing, comedy’s absolute. I am because he was!”

Jimmy Kimmel wrote on Twitter: “Jerry Lewis was a genius comedian, actor, director, inventor, humanitarian.”

Jerry Lewis was born Joseph Levitch in Newark, New Jersey, to Russian-Jewish parents who were both in show business.

He started performing on stage at the age of five alongside his parents.

Jerry Lewis teamed up with Dean Martin in the late 1940s, acting the goofy sidekick to Martin’s suave persona.

Over the next 10 years they appeared in nightclubs, on TV and in movies, but their partnership ended with a bitter split.

Jerry Lewis was also the host of the long-running MDA Telethon which raised many millions of dollars for muscular dystrophy.

In 1995, he became the highest-paid star in Broadway history as Mr. Applegate in the musical Damn Yankees. He also won acclaim as a writer.

However, in his later years, Jerry Lewis courted controversy with racist and misogynistic jokes, and in 2007 he was forced to apologize after making an anti-gay slur during a telethon.

Dick Gregory Dies Aged 84

Dick Gregory has passed away at the age of 84, his family has announced.

The comic legend and civil rights activist died at hospital in Washington DC after being admitted with an undisclosed illness.

His family shared the news of their “enormous sadness” in a post on social media on August 19.

From the 1960s, Dick Gregory mocked racism in his stand-up routines. He was among the first American black comedian to perform regularly in front of white audiences.

His son, Christian, wrote on Instagram: “It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, DC.”

He added that the family “appreciates the outpouring of support and love” but requested that their privacy be respected “during this very difficult time”.

Civil rights activist Rev Jesse Jackson paid tribute to Dick Gregory on Twitter, saying: “He taught us how to laugh. He taught us how to fight. He taught us how to live. Dick Gregory was committed to justice. I miss him already. #RIP”

Dick Gregory was a no-holds-barred comedian, delivering lines in his performances that were likely to raise eyebrows.

He once said: “A Southern liberal? That’s a guy that’ll lynch you from a low tree.”

“Segregation is not all bad,” Dick Gregory said on another occasion.

“Have you ever heard of a collision where the people in the back of the bus got hurt?”

Dick Gregory was also involved in a number of civil rights activities in the 1960s. He campaigned against the Vietnam War and his protests often involved hunger strikes.

Nigeria: President Muhammadu Buhari Returns Home After Three Months

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari returned to the country on August 19, after three months in London for medical treatment.

Officials refused to disclose what the president was being treated for.

It was Muhammadu Buhari’s second spell of medical leave this year – leading many Nigerians to question whether he was well enough to run the country.

Muhammadu Buhari, 74, walked unaided from the plane after landing in capital Abuja.

The president was greeted by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who has acted as interim leader, and was accorded a military salute.

He made no statement and immediately traveled to the presidential residence.

Muhammadu Buhari, who took office in May 2015, handed over power to Vice President Osinbajo to allay concerns of a void at the helm of Africa’s biggest economy.

The president’s absence sparked numerous protests, including demands that he should resign, as well as calls for more transparency about his condition.

There has been speculation about Muhammadu Buhari’s health since June 2016, when he first went to London for treatment of what his aides said was a persistent ear infection.

Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman said he will address Nigerians on August 21.

Boston: Thousands Protest Against Right-Wing Free Speech Rally

0

Tens of thousands of anti-racism protesters have marched against the “Free Speech” rally in Boston that featured right-wing speakers.

The rally on Boston Common, which attracted only a small crowd, disbanded early and the participants were escorted out by police.

The conservative rally organizers had said they would not give a platform to racism or bigotry.

Tensions are high after violent demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virgina, last weekend turned deadly.

Up to 30,000 people attended the counter-protest, The Boston Herald reported. Demonstrators had gathered at a Boston sports centre and then marched en masse to the common.

Many wore stickers with the face of Heather Heyer, who died when a car was driven into a crowd of counter-protesters at last Saturday’s far-right rally in Charlottesville.

The crowd chanted “No Nazis, no KKK, no fascists in the USA!” and carried banners with slogans such as “Stop pretending your racism is patriotism”.

Hundreds of police, many on cycles, were deployed but no violence was reported. Large vehicles were positioned along with concrete barriers to prevent access to the park.

The organizers of the rally said that “misinformation in the media” was “likening our organization to those that ran the Charlottesville rally”.

“While we maintain that every individual is entitled to their freedom of speech and defend that basic human right, we will not be offering our platform to racism or bigotry,” the group wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to the event.

“We denounce the politics of supremacy and violence.”

The list of speakers for the free speech event changed a number of times in previous days. At times it included speakers who have been associated with the far right.

The violence in Charlottesville began with a protest and counter-protest over the planned removal of a statue of Confederate commander General Robert E. Lee.

In the aftermath, Confederate statues across America have come under renewed scrutiny.

On August 19, Duke University in North Carolina removed a statue of Robert E. Lee from its chapel entrance, following vandalism earlier in the week.

President Trump and First Lady to Skip Kennedy Center Honors

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have decided not to attend the Kennedy Center Honors to allow those taking part “to celebrate without political distraction”, the White House announces.

Some of those due to take part in the arts awards ceremony had said they would boycott the White House reception held before the awards ceremony.

The Kennedy Center Honors recognize the lifetime contributions of performing artists.

Many artists have been angered by President Trump’s plans to scrap funding.

In his budget outline in March, the president pushed for the end of federal support for public broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Donald Trump is also mired in controversy over his response to recent violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized the president for insisting that anti-racism protesters were equally to blame for the violence that ended in the death of a woman.

The White House said in a statement: “The president and first lady have decided not to participate in this year’s [Kennedy Center Honors] activities to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction.

First Lady Melania Trump, along with her husband President Donald J Trump, extend their sincerest congratulations and well wishes to all of this year’s award recipients for their many accomplishments.”

Dancer and choreographer Carmen de Lavallade, who is due to be honored at the December ceremony, said earlier this week that she would boycott the related White House reception for honorees.

She said in a statement: “In light of the socially divisive and morally caustic narrative that our existing leadership is choosing to engage in, and in keeping with the principles that I and so many others have fought for, I will be declining the invitation to attend the reception at the White House.”

Lionel Richie had also suggested he might not attend, telling the NBC’s Today: “I’m not really happy with what’s going on right now with the controversies. They’re weekly, daily, hourly.”

TV producer Norman Lear, who is to receive a lifelong artistic achievement award, also said he would not attend the White House reception.

He said: “It is more important now than ever that we stand up for artists, for artistic expression, and for the valiant fight that artists fight to reveal the wonder and oneness of the human spirit.”

Venezuela Constituent Assembly to Assume Powers of Opposition-Led Parliament

Venezuela’s new constituent assembly has overwhelmingly voted in favor of assuming the powers of the opposition-led parliament.

However, parliament has rejected the move. President Nicolas Maduro says the new assembly will end political unrest, but many say it is a slide towards dictatorship.

Meanwhile Colombia says Venezuela’s chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz has arrived in the capital Bogota.

Luisa Ortega Diaz said she feared for her life after being dismissed by the controversial assembly.

Once a staunch supporter of Nicolas Maduro, Luisa Ortega had become a strong critic of the president’s socialist government in recent months.

The former chief prosecutor’s whereabouts had been unknown following her dismissal on August 5.

On August 18, Luisa Ortega told a regional conference via videolink that she had evidence that President Maduro was embroiled in a corruption scandal involving the Brazilian construction company, Odebrecht.

Odebrecht has admitted paying bribes to win contracts in 12 countries, though no Venezuelans have been named.

Venezuela: President Trump Warns Nicolas Maduro over Jailed Opponents

Venezuela’s parliament said citizens and the international community would not recognize the constituent assembly’s new powers.

The head of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almagro called the move an “illegitimate dissolution” of the elected parliament.

Regional economic bloc Mercosur – which includes the region’s two biggest economies Brazil and Argentina – also condemned the move.

Earlier this month, Mercosur suspended Venezuela indefinitely, urging President Maduro to release prisoners and begin a political transition.

The heads of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled parliament and the new assembly have been trading insults on social media.

Parliament head Julio Borges accused the constituent assembly of a “coup” while new assembly head Delcy Rodriguez – a close ally of President Maduro – denounced his “lies”.

President Maduro’s wife and son are among the 545 members of the new assembly, which was set up following a controversial election earlier this month.

More than 120 people have been killed in Venezuela’s violent protests since April.

Nicolas Maduro’s opponents want to hold a vote to remove him, blaming his left-wing administration for food shortages and soaring inflation in the oil-rich country.

Constituent assemblies are set up for the specific purpose of drafting or adopting a constitution, and as such can fundamentally change how a country is run.

Venezuela has seen waves of violent protests, and President Maduro presented the assembly as a way of promoting “reconciliation and peace”.

An ally of Nicolas Maduro, former foreign minister Delcy Rodriguez, is president of the new body

The election for the constituent assembly was marred by violence and accusations of fraud.

Venezuela’s electoral authorities said more than eight million people, or 41.5% of the electorate, had voted, a figure the company that provided the voting system said was inflated.

The opposition boycotted the poll and also held an unofficial referendum in which they said more than seven million Venezuelans voted against the constituent assembly.

The US has imposed sanctions on Presidnet Maduro, with the Trump administration calling him a “dictator”.

The EU and major Latin American nations say they will not recognize the new body.

Nicolas Maduro retains a major ally in Russia, however, and has the support of several left-wing nations in the Americas.

US Launches Investigation into China’s Intellectual Property Policies

The US has launched an investigation into China’s intellectual property policies.

United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said his office had “determined that these critical issues merit a thorough investigation”.

The move was expected after President Donald Trump asked Bob Lighthizer to review China’s practices.

China has voiced “serious concern” over the investigation, which could result in US trade sanctions.

The annual cost to the US economy from counterfeit goods, pirated software and theft of trade secrets has been estimated at up to $600 billion.

Penalties might be targeted against individual companies, or more wide-ranging, which will shape China’s reaction.

On August 15, China’s commerce ministry warned: “If the US side takes actions that impair the mutual trade relations, disregarding the facts and disrespecting multilateral trade rules, China will not sit idle.”

Steve Bannon Fired as White House Chief Strategist

Steve Bannon has been fired as the White House Chief Strategist.

He is the latest top aide of President Donald Trump to leave his post.

On August 18, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that Friday was Steve Bannon’s last day.

His exit follows a review of his position by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Steve Bannon, a right-wing nationalist and former head of Breitbart.com, helped shape the “America First” message of Donald Trump’s election campaign.

However, critics had accused him of harboring anti-Semitic and white supremacist views.

Charlottesville Violence: Steve Bannon Attacks White Nationalists as “Clowns”

Steve Bannon Removed from National Security Council

Steve Bannon is known to have competed for influence in the West Wing against more moderate factions, including members of the Trump family.

President Trump fuelled speculation when asked last week about Steve Bannon’s future as he replied: “We’ll see.”

Steve Bannon’s interview this week with the American Prospect, a liberal magazine, reportedly infuriated the president.

He was quoted as dismissing the idea of a military solution in North Korea, undercutting President Trump.

He told the magazine the US was “at economic war with China” and that he aimed to push out moderates whom he believed were soft on China.

Steve Bannon told associates he thought it was an off-the-record chat and didn’t realize he would be quoted.

He has pushed for imposing additional tariffs on China and other trade partners to reduce deficits with those countries.

Steve Bannon also advocated for a travel ban on citizens of certain Muslim-majority countries.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ statement said: “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day.

“We are grateful for his service and wish him the best.”

Source familiar with the decision said Steve Bannon had been given the chance to leave on his own terms.

Steve Bannon took over as chief of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in August 2016.

He was formerly a US Navy officer, Goldman Sachs investment banker, Hollywood movie producer and head of Breitbart News.

Steve Bannon has reportedly told friends he could go back to the right-wing outlet that has boisterously supported Donald Trump.

In a potentially worrying sign for the White House, Breitbart‘s senior editor-at-large Joel Pollak tweeted: “#WAR”.

Nestle Accused of Copying Atari’s Breakout Game in Kit Kat Ad

0

Nestle has been accused of copying Breakout, the 1970s popular computer game, in a Kit Kat marketing campaign.

Atari, the company behind some of the most popular early video games, has filed a suit alleging Nestle knowingly exploited the game’s look and feel.

The ad showed a game similar to Breakout but where the bricks were replaced with single Kit Kat bars.

The Swiss chocolate maker said it was aware of the lawsuit and would defend itself “strongly” against the allegations.

Breakout was created as a successor to “Pong” by Apple founders, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

In the ad, which is titled Kit Kat: Breakout, a row of people, of varying ages and appearance, share a sofa and play a video game during their work break. In the game depicted, a primitive paddle moves side-to-side to bounce a ball into a collision with the horizontal bars ranged across the top of the screen.

Atari alleges that the similarity with its original game “is so plain and blatant that Nestle cannot claim to be an <<innocent>> infringer”.

The legal complaint against Nestle, filed in a San Francisco court on August 17, claims that Nestle had hoped to exploit “the special place [Breakout] holds among nostalgic Baby Boomers, Generation X, and even today’s Millennial and post-Millennial <<gamers>>”.

A Nestle spokesperson said: “This is a UK TV advert that ran in 2016. The ad no longer runs and we have no current plans to re-run it.

“We are aware of the lawsuit in the US and will defend ourselves strongly against these allegations.”

Las Ramblas Attack Death Toll Rises to 14 as Five Suspected Terrorist Shot Dead in Cambrils

0

Five suspected terrorists have been shot dead in the town of Cambrils in a second vehicle attack, hours after another in Barcelona killed 14 people and injured dozens, Spanish police say.

According to police, the men were linked to the Barcelona attack, which ISIS said it had carried out.

Police are still hunting the man who drove his van into crowds on Las Ramblas in Barcelona on August 17.

Spanish media have named 18-year-old Moussa Oubakir as the suspect.

Moussa Oubakir is the brother of Driss Oubakir, whose documentation was allegedly used to rent the van involved in the attack.

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has condemned what he called a “jihadist attack”. He has announced three days of national mourning and a minute’s silence was held at noon on August 18.

Seven people, including a police officer, were wounded when a car was driven into them on August 18 in the morning, Catalan emergency services said. One later died in hospital.

The attackers’ vehicle overturned and when the men got out they were quickly fired upon by police, media say. One was reportedly brandishing a knife.

According to police, the men were wearing what appeared to be explosive belts and a series of controlled explosions was carried out. The belts proved to be fake, Catalan regional head Carles Puigdemont later told local radio.

Police say the situation in Cambrils – a popular seaside resort 68 miles south-west of Barcelona – is now under control.

A rented van was driven down Las Ramblas, a popular street in the center of Barcelona on August 17, mowing down tourists and locals.

Witnesses said the van deliberately targeted people, weaving from side to side.

The driver of the van, believed to be the sole attacker, fled on foot and is still being hunted by police.

Las Ramblas is a central boulevard that runs 0.75 miles through the center of Barcelona from the city’s Plaça de Catalunya (Catalonia Square) to the Christopher Columbus monument at the seafront.

Citizens of some 24 countries were killed or injured in the Las Ramblas attack, the Catalan government has said.

The confirmed dead are: Spaniard Francisco López Rodríguez, who was in his 60s; Italian Bruno Gulotta, 35; unnamed Italian; unnamed Belgian.

France’s foreign ministry said on August 18 that 26 French nationals were injured, with at least 11 in a serious condition.

Another 13 German citizens were wounded, some seriously. A 5-year-old Irish boy suffered a broken leg.

Hong Kong, Taiwan and Greece are among those saying their citizens were injured. Pakistani, Philippine, Venezuelan, Australian, Romanian, Peruvian, Dutch, Danish, Algerian and Chinese nationals were also among the casualties, officials said.

Two people were detained on August 17 over the Las Ramblas attack, but not the driver of the van.

One of those held is Driss Oubakir, whose documents were used to rent the van, local media say.

According to local media, Driss Oubakir is in his 20s, and was born in Morocco. However, latest reports suggest he has told police he was not involved, and that his documents were stolen.

Spanish media also report that his younger brother, Moussa Oubakir, rented two vans, the one used in the attack and another found hours later in the town of Vic, north of Barcelona, and intended as a getaway vehicle.

The second man arrested was born in Melilla, the autonomous Spanish city on the north coast of Africa. He has not been named.

On August 18, Spanish police announced a third arrest had been made in the Catalan town of Ripoll.

ISIS has said it was behind the Las Ramblas attack, saying in a brief statement carried by its Amaq news outlet that it was carried out by “Islamic State soldiers”. The group gave no further evidence or details to back this claim.

Donald Trump Denounces Removal of Confederate Statues

0

President Donald Trump has denounced the removal of “beautiful” Confederate statues amid a heated national debate about US race relations.

He tweeted: “Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments.”

“You can’t change history, but you can learn from it,” the president continued.

President Trump drew outrage by defending organizers of a white supremacist rally that left one person dead and dozens hurt.

The rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, supported by neo-Nazis and white supremacists, was in protest of the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, a general who had fought for the pro-slavery Confederacy during the Civil War.

The protest turned deadly when a driver ploughed into a crowd of counter protesters, inflicting fatal injuries on Heather Heyer.

Charlottesville Protests: Donald Trump Now Blames Violence on Both Sides

In a series of tweets on August 17, President Trump said: “Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!”

“The beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!”

The recent removal of controversial statues, including some to leaders of the pro-slavery rebellion defeated in the US Civil War, has been the latest flashpoint in racial tensions across the country.

Critics say monuments to the Confederacy are racially offensive, but supporters say they are important symbols preserving Southern heritage.

On August 17, Maine’s Governor Paul LePage, a Republican, said that taking down Confederate statues is “just like” removing a monument to the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

However, relatives of Stonewall Jackson, a Confederate leader President Trump mentioned in his tweets, wrote an open letter to the mayor of Richmond, Virginia, urging him to remove the statue of their great-great-grandfather and all other Confederate statues in town.

Jack and Warren Christian, Stonewall Jackson’s great-great-sons, said removing the statues would “further difficult conversations about racial justice”.

“While we are not ashamed of our great-great-grandfather, we are ashamed to benefit from white supremacy while our black family and friends suffer,” the pair wrote.

“We are ashamed of the monument.”

Robert E. Lee V, the great-great-grandson of the famous Confederate general, also issued a statement condemning the violence in the wake of the statue removals.

Donald Trump’s comments came after a week of turmoil over his response to the violent clashes in Charlottesville.

The president was criticized for blaming both sides for the violence, but belatedly condemned the white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups on August 14.

During a heated news conference on August 15, President Trump backtracked and again blamed left-wing counter-protesters for the incident, too.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only black Republican in the upper chamber, said in an interview with Vice News that President Trump’s “moral authority” had been “compromised”.

“I’m not going to defend the indefensible… [Donald Trump’s] comments on Monday were strong. His comments on Tuesday started erasing the comments that were strong,” Senator Scott said.

“What we want to see from our president is clarity and moral authority. And that moral authority is compromised.”

Amid the fallout over President Trump’s response, corporate leaders and CEOs began resigning from two White House business councils.

On August 16, the Strategy and Policy Forum announced it would disband as Presidnet Trump said he would end the council as well as a manufacturing one.

At least one person has been killed and 32 others injured after a van ploughed into crowds in Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas tourist area.

The vehicle sped along the pedestrian area, sending many fleeing for cover in shops and cafes.

Witnesses said the van had deliberately targeted people before coming to a stop.

According to El Pais newspaper, the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot after mowing down dozens of people.

Police are treating the incident as a terror attack.

Spanish media reports say one or two armed men barricaded themselves inside a bar in the area after the attack.

Vehicles have been used to ram into crowds in a series of attacks across Europe since July last year.

A suspect has been arrested by Spanish police and a possible name has been released: Detenido “Driss” Oukabir.

A rental van has driven over a crowd of people crossing a busy intersection in the tourist area of Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain. According to the AP, the van “jumped” the sidewalk and hit people. Ultima Ahora reports at least 13 are dead.

Las Ramblas is Barcelona’s central boulevard that runs 0.75 miles through the city’s center. It runs from Barcelona’s Plaça de Catalunya (Catalonia Square) to the Christopher Columbus monument at the seafront.

The boulevard is popular with tourists because of its market stalls, bars and restaurants.

Barcelona city council restricted traffic flow on Las Ramblas because of heavy pedestrian use of the street.

Gen Joseph Dunford: North Korea War Would Be Horrific

0

According to General Joseph Dunford, the top military adviser to President Donald Trump, a military response to North Korea would be “horrific” but remains an option.

The US Joint Chiefs of Staff made the comments while visiting China.

Gen. Joseph Dunford was responding to remarks by a top Trump aide ruling out military action over North Korea’s nuclear program.

Tensions have flared between the US and North Korea after Pyongyang made advances in its missile testing.

President Trump has warned North Korea that it faces “fire and fury”, while Pyongyang has threatened to strike the American territory of Guam.

However, the sharp rhetoric of last week has since softened, with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un putting the Guam plans on hold – a move praised by President Trump.

Donald Trump: “US Military Is Locked and Loaded to Deal with North Korea”

UN Security Council Agrees on Fresh Sanctions Against North Korea

On August 16, White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon said there could be no military solution to the stand-off.

He told The American Prospect: “Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that 10 million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.”

Gen. Dunford agreed a military solution would be “horrific” but went on to say “what’s unimaginable to me is not a military option”.

“What is unimaginable is allowing [North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un] to develop ballistic missiles with a nuclear warhead that can threaten the United States and continue to threaten the region.”

He said President Trump “has told us to develop credible, viable military options, and that’s exactly what we’re doing”.

A senior Chinese military official who met Gen. Joseph Dunford told him that military action should be ruled out and that “dialogue” was the only option, the Chinese defense ministry said.

China is North Korea’s only major ally. The US has criticized China for not doing enough to rein it in, but Beijing says it has begun halting iron, iron ore and seafood imports from North Korea, in line with new UN sanctions.

Could You Relocate For Work?

The world is a very big place made up of many countries and cultures. Trying to see as much of the world as possible is important in life, and part of that is planning things so that you can have those experiences and not rely on vacations to get you there. You could be very comfortable where you are with your current city and current employer, but that doesn’t mean the idea of relocation won’t cross your mind. If the opportunity to move to another country and explore a new culture falls into your lap, you have a lot of things to consider.

Moving for a job is exciting, but it doesn’t mean you won’t meet a certain number of challenges head on. You have to identify the pros and cons of what would happen when you relocate and whether you could cope with being more than a tourist. Being a visitor in another country is very different to applying for temporary visas and doing an Aadhar card download ready for working. Relocation has to be about more than the job you could move for. It has to be about the place you are going to and whether you can cope with the changes that come with embracing a new culture. So, what things should you ask yourself before you can decide whether you can make the step to relocate somewhere entirely new?

What are the benefits? When you get offered a job abroad, you have to decide whether it would be worth more in salary, benefits and experiences before you make the leap. Are you going to be living somewhere with a better climate, making those days off more fun? These are important things you should look into before you say yes.

Will this move better your career prospects? A lot of people relocate for the cultural experiences and the chance for a different view out of the office window, but if it’s not going to give your resume a rich lift, is it really worth it? Weigh up what kind of future this role could offer you, and whether this role could help you climb the ladder better than where you are now.

Can this move make your life more enriched? Immersion into a new culture and living like a local can give you a different perspective on the area you have agreed to take a job in. If this new place can give your life more meaning and give you enriched experiences that you will never be able to get again, then it can feel like a no-brainer!

Will this change your life? We all go into different experiences with the goal that we can do something better in our lives, and if this role is going to elevate the life you already have then surely this experience is going to be worth the change?

Life is all about embracing new places, new people and new cultures and if you can get the chance to move and work abroad, you should grab it with both hands. If it doesn’t work out, you can always come home!

Charlottesville Violence: Steve Bannon Attacks White Nationalists as “Clowns”

0

White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon has attacked white nationalists as “clowns” as the fallout from violent protests in Charlottesville continues.

Steve Bannon once headed the right-wing Breitbart News, seen as both a major channel for nationalism and key in helping Donald Trump win election.

However, the former film executive told The American Prospect: “Ethno-nationalism – it’s losers.”

Questions surround Steve Bannon’s future, with President Trump refusing to say whether he still had confidence in him.

President Trump has reportedly been urged to fire Steve Bannon, who in his role has enjoyed direct access to the president and whose influence has been seen in decisions like the US withdrawing from the Paris climate accord.

At a news conference this week, President Trump would only say “we’ll see” when it came to Steve Bannon’s future.

Donald Trump is under fire for his response to August 12 clashes between far-right and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, in which he blamed “both sides” for the violence.

The rally, attended by neo-Nazis and white supremacists, was in protest at the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, a general who fought for the pro-slavery Confederacy during the US Civil War.

A memorial was held on August 16 for Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman killed when a suspected far-right sympathizer drove a car into a crowd of counter-protesters.

Meanwhile Apple CEO Tim Cook has become the latest business leader to criticize President Trump, saying he did not agree there was a “moral equivalence” between white supremacists and “those who oppose them”.

In his interview with The American Prospect, Steve Bannon was asked if there was a connection between the economic nationalism that he supports and the white nationalism seen in Charlottesville.

“Ethno-nationalism – it’s losers,” he said.

“It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more.”

“These guys are a collection of clowns,” he added.

Steve Bannon has distanced himself from “ethno-nationalism” before, telling the New York Times his interest in nationalism stems from wanting to curb the negative effects of globalization.

Charlottesville: Tim Cook Latest to Disagree with Donald Trump’s Take on Neo-Nazi Violence

Tim Cook has become the latest chief executive to criticize President Donald Trump over his response to the white nationalist rallies in Virginia.

The Apple boss said he did not agree there was a “moral equivalence” between white supremacists and “those who oppose them”.

President Trump has disbanded two business councils after top bosses resigned.

Tim Cook said Apple will also make donations to human rights charities.

In an email to staff obtained by BuzzFeed News, Tim Cook said: “I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights.

“Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.”

Tim Cook added that “in the wake of the tragic and repulsive events in Charlottesville, we are stepping up to help organizations who work to rid our country of hate”.

Apple will donate $1 million to both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. It will also match two-for-one any staff donations to these and several other human rights groups until September 30, the Apple boss said.

On August 16, Presidnet Trump said he was scrapping two business councils after more bosses quit over his handling of the violent clashes in Virginia.

Business leaders left the White House manufacturing council after the backlash against how he reacted to the far-right rally last weekend.

The clashes culminated in Heather Heyer’s death and 19 wounded when a car ploughed into a crowd of anti-fascist protesters.

President Trump’s reaction has sparked outrage and generated global headlines.

His announcement on Twitter came as the heads of 3M, Campbell Soup, Johnson & Johnson and United Technologies announced their resignations on August 16.

President Trump said: “Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both.”

Before Donald Trump’s announcement, the Strategy and Policy Forum announced it was a joint decision to disband the council.

Businesses have been under pressure to distance themselves from President Trump over his handling of the clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia.

On August 14, President Trump belatedly condemned the white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups that rallied in a small Virginia town on August 13.

However, in a rancorous news conference on August 15, the president backtracked and again blamed left-wing counter-protesters for the violence too.

On August 16, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, a member of the Strategy and Policy Forum, released a separate statement saying he strongly disagreed with President Trump’s recent statements, adding that “fanning divisiveness is not the answer”.

“Constructive economic and regulatory policies are not enough and will not matter if we do not address the divisions in our country. It is a leader’s role, in business or government, to bring people together, not tear them apart,” he said.

Denise Morrison of Campbell Soup said she could not continue to participate in the advisory panel after President Trump’s comments. Activists had called on Campbell Soup, among other firms, to take action.

Ryanair Accuses Lufthansa and German Government of Air Berlin Conspiracy

0

Ryanair has accused the German government and Lufthansa of conspiring to carve up collapsed airline Air Berlin.

Lufthansa is negotiating over buying Air Berlin planes, which are still flying following a 150 million euro German government loan.

Ryanair said there was an “obvious conspiracy” between Germany, Lufthansa and Air Berlin to carve up the assets.

The German government rejected the accusation and said its support for Air Berlin did not breach anti-trust rules.

Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy on August 15, after its biggest shareholder, the Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad, withdraw its financial support.

Over the past year Air Berlin’s passenger numbers have been in freefall. Last month the airline – Germany’s second-biggest carrier – lost a quarter of its customers compared with July 2016.

Germany’s economy minister, Brigitte Zypries, said that a deal whereby Lufthansa took over part of the insolvent airline should be struck in the next few months.

Ryanair said: “This manufactured insolvency is clearly being set up to allow Lufthansa to take over a debt-free Air Berlin which will be in breach of all known German and EU competition rules.

“Now even the German government is supporting this Lufthansa-led monopoly with 150m euros of state aid so that Lufthansa can acquire Air Berlin and drive domestic air fares in Germany even higher than they already are.”

Germanwings crash: Lufthansa puts aside $300 million to cover possible costs

A German economy spokeswoman said: “I reject the accusation by Ryanair today that it was a staged insolvency application.”

Ryanair has lodged a complaint with the German regulator, the Bundeskartellamt, and the European Commission.

Lufthansa said it was already in negotiations with Air Berlin to take over parts of the company and was considering hiring more staff: “Lufthansa intends to conclude these negotiations successfully in due time.”

Ryanair has in the past made other criticisms of the relationship between Air Berlin and Lufthansa.

Lufthansa has been operating 38 Air Berlin Airbus jets on its behalf under a “wet lease” arrangement. In January Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary described the deal as a “joke”.

Michael O’Leary told the German magazine WirtschaftsWoche that the deal was “a takeover with the aim of dominating the market. Lufthansa controls the capacities of its most important competitor, sets the prices and decides where aircraft will start. The German authorities are doing nothing”.

Lufthansa’s interest in Air Berlin has also upset its own staff.

At its Eurowings subsidiary, unions are balloting cabin crew about industrial action after pay talks broke down – something the unions blame on Air Berlin’s collapse.

German cabin crew union UFO said: “The reasons why no solution could be worked out with Eurowings management became clear yesterday: the Lufthansa group can obtain cheap aircraft through Air Berlin’s insolvency and doesn’t need to take on its staff or their wage agreements.”

However, the demise of Air Berlin could open up the German market to more competition.

Ryanair and EasyJet have only managed to get a toehold at airports such as Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt.

Gerald Khoo, transport analyst at Liberium Capital, said: “Based on August schedules, Germany currently represents just 9% of EasyJet’s capacity and 7% of Ryanair’s, compared with 76% of Lufthansa’s, highlighting the relative importance of that market to each carrier.”

Ryanair has been targeting the German market, with new routes to and from Frankfurt.

Gerald Khooo said: “We would expect German airports to move up the list of priorities for next summer for both major low cost carriers, whether or not they attempt to pick up assets and/or staff from Air Berlin’s bankruptcy process.”

Reuters reported on August 15 that Easyjet was in talks to buy assets from Air Berlin. EasyJet declined to comment.

Charlottesville Protests: Donald Trump Now Blames Violence on Both Sides

0

President Donald Trump has again blamed both sides for the violent unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, which left Heather Heyer dead and 19 others injured.

In a statement on August 14, the president had condemned white supremacists.

However, in New York on August 15, Donald Trump also blamed left-wing supporters for charging at the “alt-right”.

The president’s latest comments drew swift criticism, including from many in his Republican party.

Many echoed Senator John McCain’s view: “There is no moral equivalency between racists & Americans standing up to defy hate & bigotry.”

The right-wing march had been organized to protest against the proposed removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee, who commanded the pro-slavery Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The event drew white supremacy groups.

Charlottesville Protests: Governor Terry McAuliffe Blames White Supremacists for City Violence

Violence broke out after they were confronted by anti-racism groups. A car ploughed into one group of anti-racism protesters, killing Heather Heyer, 32, and injuring 19 others.

Speaking at the White House on August 14, President Trump had said that the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and white supremacists were “repugnant” to everything Americans held dear.

However, at a bad-tempered press conference at Trump Tower on August 15, Donald Trump reverted to blaming “many sides” for August 12 violence.

“You had a group on one side that was bad, and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. And nobody wants to say that, but I’ll say it right now,” he said.

“What about the alt-left that came charging… at the, as you say, the alt-right? Do they have any semblance of guilt? (…) There are two sides to a story.”

President Trump called the driver of the car that ploughed into the anti-racism protesters a disgrace to himself and his country, but said that those who had marched in defense of the statue had included “many fine people”.

He also asked whether statues of former presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson should also be torn down, because they had been slave-owners.

President Trump’s remarks were welcomed by David Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, who tweeted: “Thank you President Trump for your honesty & courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa.”

Daniel Craig Confirms He Is Coming Back as James Bond in 2019

Daniel Craig has confirmed that he will come back as James Bond.

The 49-year-old actor was asked whether he will play James Bond again during his appearance on The Late Show.

“Yes,” Daniel Craig told host Stephen Colbert, before standing up to shake his hand.

Daniel Craig, who has played James Bond in the past four films, has until now refused to say whether he will do it again.

However, he revealed he has known for a “couple of months”.

“We’ve been discussing it, we’ve just been trying to figure things out,” he said.

“I always wanted to, I needed a break.”

The next Bond movie, the 25th in the series, is due out in November 2019.

Daniel Craig said it will be his last outing as James Bond.

“I just want to go out on a high note, and I can’t wait.”

The actor was still refusing to confirm speculation about it as late as yesterday.

“No decision has been made,” he told Boston radio station Magic 106.7.

“I know they’re desperate to get going and I would in theory love to do it, but there is no decision just yet.”

Daniel Craig succeeded Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and made his debut in Casino Royale in 2006.

He has since played the spy in Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).

Bill Gates Makes $4.6 Billion Donation

0

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has given away $4.6 billion to charity in his largest donation since 2000.

Bill Gates remains the world’s richest person, despite giving away 64 million shares in Microsoft.

The shares are equivalent to 5% of his total fortune, currently estimated to be $89.9 billion.

Since 1994, Bill Gates, 61, and his wife Melinda have given away a total of $35 billion in cash and stocks to a range of charitable causes.

The donation was made in June but became public on August 14 following the filing of a document with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Bill Gates’ share in Microsoft is now just 1.3%. Prior to this, he gave away $16 billion in Microsoft shares in 1999 and $5.1 billion in 2000.

The majority of all previous donations have been made to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is primarily focused on reducing world poverty, combating infectious diseases and providing universal access to computers.

It is not known who the recipient of Bill Gates’ latest donation is, however when federal documents are filed, it usually means new money is being given to a foundation, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reports.

In 2010, Bill and Melinda Gates and the well-known investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett created the Giving Pledge, and as of May 2017, 158 individuals or couples have agreed to contribute at least half of their wealth to charity.

This latest donation is the biggest charitable gift to have been made anywhere in the world so far this year.

The second largest was made by Warren Buffett, who donated almost $3.2 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation last month.

The third biggest came from Dell Computer Corporation founder Michael Dell and his wife Susan.

In May, Michael and Susan Dell gave more than $1 billion to their foundation, which focuses on children’s issues and community initiatives.

How We Are Working To Solve The Food Crisis

0

The global food shortage the world faces is as terrifying and real as Donald Trump being President of the United States of America. Just look at Venezuela right now. But, unlike this administration, the horrors of such food shortage won’t come to an abrupt halt in *eight years time (*we mean four), instead it will have drastically worsened unless we come collectively fight for sustainability.

Luckily, among all this doom and gloom, there is the silver lining of a solution, which requires us to simultaneously close the food gap, promote economic development and reduce the current impact the agricultural industry has on the environment. And here is how we can do that:

Reduce Food Waste

40% of all the food produced is wasted. On top of that, 25% of all the food created on the fields is lost before it makes it to the fork. Just reducing these figures by half could close the food gap by 20% before 2050.

Promote Aquaculture

Nearly half of all the fish consumed is produced through aquaculture, which proves a huge shift in paradigms has taken place and continues to take place. To continue this momentum, we need to take what the Global Salmon Initiative is doing and encourage the world’s fishing enterprises to get certified. That way we can continue to reduce the reliance we have on wild-fishing being used as feed.

Not Beef Or Lamb

Beef and lamb create around six times the amount of CO2 emissions as other protein sources, including pork, chicken, fish and eggs, making them the biggest culprits in terms of greenhouse gases. As such, we need to continue urging people to shift away from beef because even just a 20% shift will protect millions and millions or forests from harm. Feeding grounds, water consumption, CO2 emissions; beef affects all of these.

Conservation Agriculture

For those who aren’t aware, the term conservation agriculture includes processes like crop rotation, mulching and reduced tillage all improve yields, which is especially important in African countries. Not only that, but agroforestry improves yields too. This works by improving land fertility and better managing water usage, which is why these techniques need to be encouraged across all sub-Saharan countries.

Locally Sourced

There is no point being a vegan if your fruit and veg have endured truck rides, boat trips and long-haul flights before making it to your plate. Instead, eating locally sourced foods is the best way forward. This could mean using FarmDrop – who source all foods from within 150 miles of the buyer – to supply your groceries, or it could be you grow your own produce in your garden. Either way, a shift towards locally sourced foods needs to happen.

It is imperative to understand that there isn’t a single solution that is going to reduce the food gap that we currently face. Instead, a cocktail of strategies must be put in place, which is what seems to be happening. However, it is not just enough for governments and businesses to be pushing this, we need to be pushing it as a society too. That is the only way of making this movement a success.

Venezuela Crisis: The Impact of Civil War?

As the crisis in Venezuela continues, talk of the issues escalating into civil war is becoming less far fetched by the day. And certainly, there are plenty of international oars being stuck into the pot – Donald Trump’s in particular. The reality for most of us, however, is that no matter what the news is saying, it’s impossible to get a grip on what is happening on the ground, whichever side you think is in the right.

There is another reality, though – rebel forces are growing, and the kindling for war needs only the slightest spark for things to ignite. Plus, now that President Maduro has won an election, even if you agree with the likes of Smartmatic who claim the ballot was tampered with, the simple fact is that once that constitution is rewritten, it will be challenging to defeat the current leader next time around.

With all this in mind, it’s hardly surprising the election itself was boycotted by the opposition. Given they see it as a phoney election – and with the likes of the United States starting to make less diplomatic noises from the north – it seems sensible that they are doing all they can to avoid legitimizing Maduro and his party. Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Canada are all throwing their two cents-worth, too, so a waiting game is probably the most useful option.

But for anyone that thinks a rebellion and civil war will see a return to a thriving Venezuela, there are a few troubling questions to answer. First of all, why is President Trump taking so much interest in Venezuela right now? And why are we seeing so much about it on the news? Yes, the reports appear to be damaging for the Maduro government, but we are most definitely seeing a one-sided picture. Many other dictators around the world are going about their business in a much more violent manner, to citizens and political opponents alike, with little to no rebuke in the mainstream news. In fact, some of them have been getting arms deals while the likes of Venezuela get sanctions.

Also, there is little talk of who these rebels really are, who they are being backed by, and what their intentions are. And the reality is that when democracies – however shambolic those democracies are – fall, they are generally replaced with something far worse.

President Maduro doesn’t deserve much sympathy, of course, given the huge mistakes the government have made which have resulted in appalling economic performance. And there is no excuse for the kind of bloodshed and violence allegedly carried out by the government. But for the Venezuelan people who will, no doubt, be severely hurt by a civil war, may not be any better off after one, even if Maduro is overthrown. And there are plenty of others with blood on their hands, too, not just government forces and supporters. Should these rebels find themselves in power one day in the not-too-distant future, one wonders what that power might look like.
