Rumors that Kim Jong Un is dead have been shot down by US officials

Rumors that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was assassinated have been shot down by US officials.

The claim originated in China on Friday and rapidly circulated on Twitter and Chinese micro-blogging sites.

Due to the difficulty of verifying news from the ultra-secretive government of North Korea, news organizations were unable to debunk the rumor.

But U.S. officials said that they believed the claim to be untrue, and had seen no evidence of “abnormal activity” in North Korea.

The claim that Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea since the death of his father Kim Jong Il in December, had died apparently stemmed from a message sent out by a man who works near the country’s embassy in Beijing.

The man posted on Sina Weibo: “Downstairs from the office, the cars at the Korean embassy are increasing rapidly, now there are over 30 cars. It’s the first time I’ve seen this situation, did something happen in Korea?”

This seemingly innocuous question, bolstered by other witnesses who saw an unusual number of cars at the embassy, was magnified by the power of internet gossip into a rumor that Kim Jong Un had been assassinated by gunmen who burst in his bedroom and were subsequently killed by his bodyguards.

Wilder commentators even spun the supposed assassination in to a broader claim that a coup was underway in North Korea which could depose the Kim dynasty, rulers of the country ever since it split with the south in 1948.

But when ABC News asked U.S. officials for confirmation of the assassination rumors, one simply told them: “There’s nothing to this.”

Another official said: “Our experts are monitoring the situation and we see no abnormal activity on the [Korean] peninsula and nothing that credits that tweet as accurate.”

It was thought that the death of the elder Kim would herald a period of instability, potentially leading to regime change, but those expectations have not been fulfilled.

A less dramatic but equally bizarre explanation for the large number of cars at the North Korean embassy was suggested by Gawker and Chinese news agency Phoenix.

They pointed out that this month would have been the 70th birthday of Kim Jong Il, and a large number of events including tours of China and North Korea are set to mark the anniversary.

So perhaps the increased activity at the embassy was not to do with the current leader, but with his dead father – in fact, it is not even clear whether or not Kim Jong Un is currently in China.

The escalating pace of rumors points to the speed at which false information can speed round the world via social networks and online news sources.

It also highlights the increasing importance of Chinese micro-blogs, known as weibo, which are more lightly regulated than other Chinese media.

Weibo and Twitter seem to have fed off each other in the case of the Kim Jong Un rumors, as most tweets about the claims pointed to weibo as their sources, while Chinese posts frequently mentioned Twitter to back up their own accuracy.

Whitney Houston news. Life and times of the American singing sensation who died at 48.

Whitney Houston was one of the world’s best-selling artists, wowing audiences with her powerful and effortless voice from the middle of the 80’s to the late 90’s.

But the showbiz world was rocked Saturday in the afternoon with the tragic news that one of music’s biggest legends Whitney Houston is dead.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a middle class family in Newark, New Jersey in 1963.

She was the third and youngest child of Army serviceman and entertainment executive John Russell Houston Jr., who passed away in 2003, and gospel singer Cissy Houston.

It was clear that natural talent in music ran through her family.

Whitney Houston’s cousins Dionne Warwick and the late Dee Dee Warwick, and also her godmother Aretha Franklin all made a huge mark on her gospel and R&B scene.

Whitney Houston first became interested in being in the music industry after frequently accompanying her mother Cissy who often performed in nightclubs.

Sometimes the teen would even take to the stage herself and perform.

Whitney Houston was offered her very first recording contract at the age of 14 by Michael Zanger, after she wowed him with her back-up singing on a record for his group, Michael Zanger band.

The singer was forced to turn it down as her mother determined that she should instead finish school.

However, in the years that followed Whitney Houston lent her voice to albums of both American soul, jazz, and blues singer Lou Rawls and Michael Jackson’s father Jermaine Jackson.

Naturally stunningly beautiful, Whitney Houston began dabbling in modelling after being spotted by a fashion photographer whilst she was performing with her mother.

Whitney Houston went on to become the first ever woman of color to appear in a fashion magazine after gracing the pages of Seventeen magazine in the early 80’s.

Subsequently Whitney Houston appeared in Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Young Miss magazines, and also in a TV advertisement for Canada Dry soft drink.

It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Whitney Houston perform.

“The time that I first saw her singing in her mother’s act in a club … it was such a stunning impact,” the record producer told Good Morning America.

“To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine.”

She made her album debut in 1985 with the self-titled record Whitney Houston.

It sold millions and spawned hit after hit including Saving All My Love for You, which won her first Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal.

Other tracks such as How Will I Know, You Give Good Love and The Greatest Love of All also went on to become giant hits.

Another multi-platinum album, Whitney, came out in 1987 and included hits like Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

The New York Times wrote that Whitney Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners”.

“She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity.”

Whitney Houston’s decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Aretha Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences.

The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the Soul Train Awards in 1989.

“Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?” Whitney Houston told Katie Couric in 1996.

“You’re not black enough for them. I don’t know. You’re not R&B enough. You’re very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them.”

Some saw Whitney Houston’s1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics.

It seemed to be an odd union, Whitney Houston was seen as pop’s pure princess while Bobby Brown had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own.

The couple went on to have a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.

Over the years, Bobby Brown was arrested several times on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.

But Whitney Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

“When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place,” Whitney Houston told Rolling Stone in 1993.

“You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that’s their image. It’s part of them, it’s not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody’s angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy.”

It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Whitney Houston.

Her moving 1991 rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America’s sweetheart.

In 1992, Whitney Houston became a star in the acting world with The Bodyguard.

Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer guarded by a former Secret Service agent, played by Kevin Costner was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You, which sat atop the charts for weeks.

It was Grammy’s Record Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal, and the Bodyguard soundtrack was named album of the year.

Whitney Houston returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife.

Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, My Love Is Your Love, in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.

But during these career and personal highs, Whitney Houston began using drugs.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, Whitney Houston said by the time The Preacher’s Wife was released: “(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. … I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. … I wasn’t happy by that point in time. I was losing myself.”

In the interview, Whitney Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Bobby Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.

Whitney Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Oprah Winfrey in 2010.

But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

Whitney Houston was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day.

Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown’s reality show, Being Bobby Brown, was an example of her sad decline.

Whitney Houston’ Sawyer interview, where she declared “crack is whack”, was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

The singer staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album I Look To You. The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on Good Morning America went awry as Whitney Houston’s voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Oprah Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Whitney Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out.

Canceled concert dates raised speculation that Whitney Houston may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Whitney Houston death. Bobby Brown broke down in tears during his concert in Mississippi.

Bobby Brown is reportedly “in and out of crying fits” after the death of his ex-wife Whitney Houston.

Bobby Brown, 43, decided the show must go on and still took to the stage to perform with his band New Edition, just hours after Whitney Houston’s sudden and tragic passing.

During his concert in Mississippi, Bobby Brown tearfully shouted: “I love you, Whitney,” as he blew kisses to the sky.

Bobby Brown told the crowd: “I would like to say, <<I love you, Whitney>>. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.”

According to Us Weekly, Bobby Brown received huge applause as he came onstage late, after apparently breaking down just before the show was due to begin.

A source told the publication that Bobby Brown broke down during his performance of the ballad Tenderoni, and asked the audience to sing along as he sobbed.

Bobby Brown was then unable to finish the song and walked off, with the concert finishing shortly afterwards.

A relative of Bobby Brown has said that he is “shattered and beyond devastated” at the news.

The source has said: “He wanted to tell everyone about it before it hit the news. He didn’t want any of us to hear about it on television.”

The relative added: “He could hardly get the words out when he called me. He was sobbing, and by the end of the call, I was sobbing too. He’s beside himself right now.”

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown wed in July 1992 and eventually separated in September 2006, before their divorce was finalized in April 2007.

Three years after their split, Whitney Houston described her troubled marriage to Bobby with the poignant words: “He was my drug”.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown have an 18-year-old daughter together, Bobbi Kristina.

Despite Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston’s rocky relationship, the trio were reunited last week for a slap-up meal together.

Whitney Houston looked happy as she left the Beverly Hills eatery after dinner, and was followed shortly after Bobby Brown and their daughter Bobbi Kristina, who held hands as they headed off together.

Whitney Houston won custody of Bobbi Kristina following her divorce from the R&B star, with Bobby Brown being allowed visitation rights.

However the pair’s last public outing together showed they seemed to have put their toxic past behind them.

Whitney Houston was spotted looking worse for wear on a night out with friends just two days before her death.

The singer had been a guest at the Kelly Price & Friends Unplugged: For The Love Of R&B Grammy Party at Tru Hollywood and had even performed during the night.

A witness told Us Weekly at the time that Whitney Houston had appeared “wasted” and “moody” as she exited the night club.

The source said: “She reacted angrily to the security guards trying to get her into her car…and started cussing them out.”

The observer went on to say that even though Whitney Houston was stopping and signing autographs for fans, “she would get moody again in a split second”.

The source added: “It was sad because her fans noticed that she was really shaky as she left the venue. She definitely was not in control of herself.”

Dressed all in black, Whitney Houston appeared angry and agitated as she left the venue and looked like she had partied a little hard.

Wearing a short black dress the star emerged with her hair messed up and gestured aggressively to the waiting photographers.

The release of the photos showing the star’s erratic behavior and disheveled look sparked concern over the singer’s health.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whitney Houston had a run-in with former X Factor contestant Stacy Francis that evening, after the star failed to remember the aspiring singer after she once pulled her onstage during one of her concerts.

A source told the website that Whitney Houston was “cordial at first” but the scene soon changed after Whitney’s friend, R&B star Ray J, stepped in.

An eyewitness said: “Whitney just got belligerent. Ray was trying to defend Stacy, telling Whitney, <<Stacy’s family!>>, but Whitney was feeling crowded out and hands were raised.”

The source added: “You didn’t know which way it could go there for a minute.”

When contacted by The Hollywood Reporter following the alleged incident, Stacy Francis said: “I have the utmost respect for Whitney Houston and her talent.”

However, Us Weekly reports that Whitney Houston “was fine” the following day as she conducted a sound-check to gear up for her performance at the pre-Grammys party.

A source told the magazine: “She was present and ready…She had water to keep her vocals clear, and was trying to not smoke.”

Whitney Houston has previously battled an addiction to crack cocaine and admitted to taking drugs with Bobby Brown during their turbulent 14 years of marriage.

Saudi journalist Hamza Kashgari deported by Malaysian authorities over insulting Prophet Muhammad

Saudi journalist Hamza Kashgari has been deported by Malaysian authorities over the accusations of insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a tweet.

Police confirmed that Hamza Kashgari, 23, was sent back to Saudi Arabia on Sunday despite protests from human rights groups.

Hamza Kashgari’s controversial tweet last week sparked more than 30,000 responses and several death threats.

Insulting the prophet is considered blasphemous in Islam and is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi journalist Hamza Kashgari has been deported by Malaysian authorities over the accusations of insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a tweet

Hamza Kashgari fled Saudi Arabia last week and was detained upon his arrival in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

The journalist had tweeted his doubts about Muhammad on the prophet’s birthday last week. Saudi clerics condemned his remarks as blasphemous.

Hamza Kashgari apologized and deleted the tweet, but when he continued to receive threats, he left for Malaysia.

The two countries do not have a formal extradition treaty but as fellow Muslim countries Malaysia has good relations with Saudi Arabia.

Malaysia’s home ministry issued a statement on Sunday saying Hamza Kashgari would be sent back, the AFP news agency reports.

“Malaysia has a long-standing arrangement by which individuals wanted by one country are extradited when detained by the other, and (Kashgari) will be repatriated under this arrangement,” AFP quotes the statement as saying.

Amnesty International has warned that Hamza Kashgari could be executed in Saudi Arabia if he is found guilty of apostasy.

“If the Malaysian authorities hand over Hamza Kashgari to Saudi Arabia, they could end up complicit in any violations he suffers,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui of Amnesty’s Middle East division.

Whitney Houston found dead in a LA hotel room, aged 48

Whitney Houston has been found dead in a Beverly Hilton Hotel room in Los Angeles, aged 48.

Whitney Houston was one of the most celebrated female singers of all time, with hits including I Will Always Love You and Saving All My Love For You.

Her later career was overshadowed by substance abuse and her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Police spokesman Mark Rosen told reporters Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 15:55 p.m. (23:55 GMT) in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Fire department personnel and members of hotel security were attempting to resuscitate her when police arrived at the scene, he said, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

“She has been positively identified by friends and family that were with her at the hotel, and next of kin have already been notified,” he added.

The cause of her death remains unclear but Mark Rosen said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent”.

Whitney Houston’s background was steeped in soul and gospel music.

Her mother was gospel singer Cissy Houston, she was cousin to singer Dionne Warwick and goddaughter to Aretha Franklin.

“I just can’t talk about it now,” Aretha Franklin said in a short statement. “It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

Having grown up in New Jersey, Whitney Houston began singing in church and then in the night clubs of New York, and was a model before being signed by Arista Records.

At the height of her career in the 1980’s and 90’s she won many awards and enjoyed several number one singles and albums.

Whitney Houston also enjoyed success acting in blockbuster films such as The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale.

In recent years drug use took its toll on Whitney Houston and her voice – once acknowledged as one of the finest in pop music – was badly damaged.

Her marriage to Bobby Brown, with whom she had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, ended in divorce in 2007. The marriage had been a tempestuous one, with allegations of domestic abuse.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Whitney Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in a 2002 interview.

Correspondents say Whitney Houston’s death will undoubtedly overshadow the music industry’s Grammy Awards, due to be held in Los Angeles today.

Whitney Houston had been expected to attend the ceremony and her close friend and long-time mentor Clive Davis had recently hinted she might perform.

“It’s her favourite night of the year … who knows by the end of the evening,” he had told AP.

Civil rights activist Rev Al Sharpton said that on the morning of the Grammys, “the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird”.

Country singer Dolly Parton – who wrote one one of her most memorable hits, I Will Always Love You – said in a statement: “Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston.”

“I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song, and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, <<Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed>>.”

Mariah Carey posted new pictures of her twins Monroe and Moroccan

Shortly after Beyonce and Jay-Z presented the first photos of their daughter Blue Ivy, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon got in on the act, tweeting an awe inspiring photo of their twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

Mariah Carey posted the photo showing the nine-month-old girl and boy wearing white jumpers, while posing on a bed.

The singer tweeted the picture of the smiling children with a link redirecting her followers to a website devoted solely to the babies.

It was accompanied by the message: “New #DemBabies picture @ http://www.dembabies.com, first one from 2012 🙂 LYM!!”

Monroe and Moroccan, who Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon refer to as “dem babies”, were born on April 30, at a Los Angeles hospital.

Mariah Carey, 41, has previously admitted that pregnancy was tough on her, saying: “My body went through so much – you have to keep those twins in as long as possible, but it’s a sacrifice you make for them.”

Mariah Carey is now a spokeswoman for the Jenny Craig weight loss programme and has dropped more than 30 pounds.

In December, Mariah Carey débuted her first Jenny Craig commercial.

Now she is stepping behind the camera to direct the diet company’s next commercial.

Mariah Carey is also teaming up with Jenny Craig to support the American Heart Association’s healthy living initiative.

The singer will produce a new public service announcement for the American Heart Association that débuts this month.

“I’m so honored to be a part of this,” she said recently.

“It’s more than just about losing weight-it’s about raising consciousness. I was very surprised to learn that every 34 seconds someone has a heart attack, but it doesn’t have to be this way.”

“By living just a little healthier, you can make a difference,” Mariah Carey added.

Nicolas Cage denied he is a vampire following bizarre internet rumors

Nicolas Cage has denied he is a vampire after being pressed on a bizarre internet rumor by talk show king David Letterman on The Late Show.

David Letterman produced a picture of Civil War-era Tennessee man from the 1860’s, which an eBay seller had claimed was proof Nicolas Cage is a member of the undead.

Nicolas Cage said: “Now look I don’t drink blood, and last time I looked in the mirror I had a reflection, so I’m not going with his vampire theory. I’m just not going to do it.”

The hilarious exchange started when David Letterman said he wanted to ask Nicolas Cage about “one of those things sweeping the internet”.

He then pulled out the picture, explained its history and wanted to find out Nicolas Cage’s take on the theory.

The 48-year-old said: “Let me say that there is a resemblance, but how can I be polite about this, it’s a somewhat slowed-down version of me.”

He also pointed out there was a fatal flaw in the reasoning of the enterprising salesman, which went against established lore about the creatures.

Nicolas Cage said: “Except there’s a photograph of me, but you can’t take pictures of vampires.”

Despite his protest though some fans were still insisting online he had just used the chat show as an opportunity for a grand ruse to throw everyone off the scent. One fan Marcela ReRibeiro said on YouTube: “He is a modern vampire, mirrors are not a problem for vampires like Nicolas.”

Nicolas Cage has yet to play a creature of the night on the silver screen, though he did star as a yuppie who thought he was becoming a blood-sucker in 1989’s Vampire’s Kiss.

He is not the only star to have been caught up in a row due to an old picture however.

Weeks after “Nicolas Cage” photo appeared online, another photo from the same era popped up showing a man bearing a strong resemblance to John Travolta.

This was used as proof of claims the Saturday Night Fever favorite was in fact a time traveler.

To date Nicolas Cage, who is a scientologist, has yet to deny his ability to travel backward and forward through time.

Dogs are swifter on the uptake than chimps

Experts found that although chimps may be known as the brains of the animal kingdom, sometimes only dogs get the point.

Scientists pointed at one of two objects, asked for it to be brought to them, and counted up how many times their orders were obeyed.

In the study, the dogs did better than the chimps, despite the chimpanzee’s brain being the more similar to the human brain.

The research team, from the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, placed pairs of similar-looking objects, such as a piece of hosepipe and a piece of rope, at the back of a room.

The researchers then pointed to the one they wanted, while order a dog or chimp standing with its back to the objects, to fetch the correct one.

If it did as asked, it was given some food as a reward.

Babies are capable of following such orders from the age of 14 months, suggesting the task is relatively simple, at least for the human brain.

In the study, the dogs did better than the chimps, despite the chimpanzee’s brain being the more similar to the human brain
In the study, the dogs did better than the chimps, despite the chimpanzee’s brain being the more similar to the human brain

Despite this, none of the chimps picked the object that had been pointed out at a rate that was higher than chance. However, more than a quarter of the dogs appeared to understand the task, the journal PLoS ONE reports.

The German scientists suggested their results could be explained by pet dogs being bred to follow orders.

The scientists said: “Dogs’ special receptiveness to human co-operative communication makes them the perfect social tool for certain activities like herding and hunting.

“One hypothesis is that dogs see human communication as imperatives and spatial directives, ordering them what to do and where to go next.”

Previous research has concluded that dogs make better pets than cats – but only by a whisker.

In the comparison of 11 traits from brain size to environmental impact, dogs came out on top in six categories to cats’ five.

But cat lovers may have the last laugh, with other research concluding that they are the top dogs for brains.

A British study found that people with university degrees are more likely to have a cat than a dog.

Two Bangladeshi TV journalists stabbed to death at their home in capital Dhaka

Two well-known Bangladeshi television journalists have been stabbed to death in the country’s capital, Dhaka, and their bodies have been found by their 5-year-old son.

Sagar Sarwar and his wife, Meherun Runi, both in their late 30’s, were stabbed to death at their apartment early on Saturday.

The journalists’ bodies were found by their five-year-old son, who then called relatives living nearby, police said.

The motive for the killings was not known and it was unclear if the deaths were related to their work.

Sagar Sarwar, a news editor at private TV station Maasranga, was found with his hands tied behind his back.

Meherun Runi worked as a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, another private station.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the killings had been planned and that the couple had probably known their attackers, a senior detective was quoted by local newspapers as saying.

Nelson Mandela, now 93, was released from prison on 11 February 1990 after 27 years in jail.

President Jacob Zuma said the banknotes were a “humble gesture” to express South Africa’s “deep gratitude”.

Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his campaign against white minority rule (apartheid). He was elected president the following year.

Known affectionately by his clan name “Madiba”, Nelson Mandela has now retired from public life.

Speaking at the central bank in Pretoria, President Jacob Zuma called Nelson Mandela’s release “the beginning of a new era of hope”.

“With this humble gesture, we are expressing our deep gratitude as the South African people, to a life spent in service of the people of this country and in the cause of humanity worldwide,” President Jacob Zuma said.

Advance notice of the news conference at the central bank had briefly rattled the markets, jittery about the state of South Africa’s economy.

No date for the release of the new notes has yet been announced. Production has already begun, but the latest edition of the currency will only be distributed towards the end of the year.

Sponge fossils found in Namibia are the world’s oldest animal life

A research team has discovered what is believed to be the world’s oldest animal life, sponge-like fossils unearthed in rocks in a national park in Namibia.

According to researchers, the find in Etosha National Park proves that sponges are the earliest forms of animal life.

The fossils were found in rocks between 760 million and 550 million years old.

They are tiny speck-sized, vase-shaped creatures.

The experts analyzed thousands of the fossils using X-rays and scanning electron microscopes.

A research team has discovered what is believed to be the world's oldest animal life, sponge-like fossils unearthed in rocks in a national park in Namibia

The discovery places the emergence of animals 100 to 150 million years earlier than scientists had previously thought.

The scientists describe the fossils as our “great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother”.

Scientists had predicted that the earliest life would take the form of sponges.

Earlier fossil finds in Australia had seemed to confirm this.

“If one looks at the family tree and projects this backward to where you have what’s called the stem group, the ancestor of all animals, then yes, this would be our great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother,” says researcher Tony Prave of the University of St Andrews.

“The aspect of this that’s rather satisfying, at least intellectually, is that it is in broad agreement with what geneticists would tell us based on looking at molecular clocks when we should see the first advent of large multi-cellular life forms.”

“This proves that the early lineages of animals go back considerably further in time,” say the researchers.

“The age of the fossils age places the advent of animals some 100 to 150million years earlier than proposed, and prior to the extreme climatic changes of Ediacaran time,” say the researchers.

These findings support the predictions based on genetic sequencing and inferences drawn from biomarkers that the first animals were sponges.

Vega rocket is set to make its maiden flight

European Space Agency’s rocket Vega is finally set to make its maiden flight on Monday.

30m-tall Vega, first conceived in the 1990’s, will launch on what is termed a qualification flight from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

Vega will carry nine satellites into orbit but the object of the mission is really to prove the rocket’s systems all work as designed.

The vehicle has been developed to assure European access to space for payload classes weighing less than 2.5 tons.

At the moment, these smaller satellites tend to ride converted Russian ICBMs to get into orbit and they can sometimes wait many months to get a launch slot.

Vega should allow European operators to have more control over the schedules of their space projects. It also means that the value of what it is an immensely high-tech enterprise will return to the European economy, not to foreign industry.

“Vega gives Europe the ability to launch small satellites,” said Jean-Jacques Dordain, director general of the European Space Agency (ESA).

“New technologies – and in particular the miniaturization of technologies – are making for more and more small satellites. This is particularly true of scientific satellites such as Earth observation spacecraft. So, Vega has a fantastic perspective in front of it provided we succeed,” he said.

Vega’s launch in French Guiana is scheduled to take place between 10:00 and 12:00 GMT.

• Vega will lift off from a refurbished pad formerly used by the Ariane 1

• Its four stages and satellite payload are assembled on the launch site

• Satellites will weigh from a few 10s of kg up to a maximum of 2,500kg

• The “reference mission” is a 1.5t satellite in a 700km-high polar orbit

There will inevitably be a degree of nervousness in launch control at Kourou come lift-off time. According to statistics compiled by the Ascend aerospace consultancy, 58% (11 out of 19) of new rockets since 1990 have experienced a major anomaly on their first flight.

It is for this reason that the satellites carried on Vega’s maiden voyage have all been given a “free ride”.

Stefano Bianchi, ESA’s Vega programme manager, explained: “Of course, we understand more about [the way rockets perform today] – we have more modellisation capability, computers, etc, but it is clear that at system level you have things you cannot test on the ground. And you have to rely on the first flight.

“You do all the verification, you take all of the margins on what is unknown, but still the first flight is always a test.”

Vega is a four-stage vehicle. Its first three segments burn a solid fuel. Its fourth and final stage uses liquid propellants and can be stopped and restarted several times to get a spacecraft into just the right orbit. The stage can also bring itself out of the sky – something deemed very important these days given the rising concern over space debris.

A significant innovation is the way the motor cases are prepared for the first three stages employing a high-strength graphite fibre and epoxy resin.

Avio, the Italian aerospace manufacturer at the heart of the Vega project, has set up a facility where filaments of this material can be wound into the desired shape.

“The use of carbon fibre is very important and allows us to reduce cost and improve performance, because there is less weight in that ratio between the frame and the fuel,” said Avio CEO Francesco Caio.

“At the moment, we’re talking about a cost of 22 million to 25 million Euros for the launcher before you add in the launching costs. It is difficult to gauge how things will evolve – and it is likely to be a function of volume and overall organization of industry and the value chain in Europe – but frankly I certainly think there is potential to drive costs down further,” he said.

ESA expects an operational Vega to be launching about twice a year, carrying mostly small scientific and government satellites.

Vega will take its place alongside its “big brother” at Kourou – the Ariane 5 heavy-lift rocket, and the new medium-lift “Europeanized” Soyuz rocket that has only recently started launching from the spaceport.

With all three vehicles, Arianespace, the company that runs Kourou, will now be able to offer satellite operators a ride for any type of spacecraft to all kinds of orbit – from the low, pole-crossing orbits used by Earth observation missions, to the high, geostationary locations favored by big telecommunications platforms.

Preparation for the launch has been pushing right up against the end of the available time window.

If Vega should need to delay its flight through this coming week because of technical concerns, it is highly likely it will be asked to stand down for a month or so.

An Ariane 5 rocket has been booked to launch Europe’s third ATV cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS) on 9 March and this mission takes precedence over all other activity at Kourou.

The frequent comings and goings at the station require a carefully co-ordinated traffic schedule and this cannot be disrupted for Vega’s introduction – as important as it is.

Brain is responsible for weight gain and obesity, say scientists

Scientists from Finland have located a certain area of the brain that could be responsible for weight gain and obesity.

The central nervous system helps to control food intake and it has long been known that the brain influences how and what we eat.

However, the latest finding suggest overweight individuals’ brains could be wired in such a way that they “constantly generate signals that promote eating” even when they don’t require food.

Participants to the study were exposed to images of food while their brain activity was monitored using functional MRI scans.

The results showed that morbidly obese subjects had a significantly higher glucose metabolism in the striatal region of the brain than lean participants.

This region is responsible for rewarding emotions and desires.

These findings are yet another step towards understanding how brain responses vary in people with weight problems.

Lead researcher Professor Lauri Nummenmaa from the University of Turku said: “The results suggest that obese individuals’ brains might constantly generate signals that promote eating even when the body would not require additional energy uptake.”

It is now hoped that the discovery will help develop more effective obesity intervention strategies.

Prof. Lauri Nummenmaa, who worked with a team from Aalto University, added: “The results have major implications on the current models of obesity, but also on development of pharmacological and psychological treatments of obesity.”

A previous study from Cambridge University found leptin, one of the key hormones responsible for reducing hunger and increasing the feeling of fullness, also controls fondness for food.

Patients with a rare genetic disorder resulting in a complete lack of leptin receptors in the brain were found to eat excessively and develop severe obesity.

When they were treated with the hormone, scientists found their hunger was reduced, and they gradually lost weight.

Although obesity typically results simply from excessive calorie intake, it is still unclear why some people are prone to overeating and gaining weight.

The results of the recent study appeared in the journal PLoS ONE.

Obesity is when a person is carrying too much body fat for their height and gender and a person is considered obese if they have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.

Mimi Alford tells the story of how JFK took her virginity on his wife’s White House bed

Mimi Alford, a former intern at White House reveals the cold-hearted truth about John F. Kennedy, a predatory president who cynically exploited her innocence as she was only 19-year-old.

Here is an extract from Mimi Alford’s memoirs, “Once Upon A Secret”, a book that shocked America:

“Never, even in my most florid imaginings, did I think that my first experience of sex would be with an older man – let alone someone of my parents’ generation.

Yet, on my fourth day as a summer intern in the White House press office, I lost my virginity to President John F Kennedy.

The experience was so wholly unexpected and surreal that, as I was driven home in a limo afterwards, I wondered if it had all been a dream.

As a sheltered and naive 19-year-old, I just couldn’t make sense of what had just happened.

For one thing, I’d always imagined that my first time would be with the man I loved on my wedding night.

That was the conventional view among girls my age in 1962 – and I was as conventional as anyone I knew.

Could I have done anything to resist President Kennedy? I doubt it: once we were alone in his wife’s bedroom, he’d manoeuvered me so swiftly and unexpectedly, and with such authority and strength, that, short of screaming, I don’t think anything would have thwarted his intentions.

Friends invariably said: <<You must see it, Mimi – you were set up! He was a predator.>> A few went a step further and brought up the word <<rape>>.

I didn’t see it that way. That night, in the midst of my shock and confusion, I felt for the first time the thrill of being desired.

And the fact that I was desired by the most famous and powerful man in America merely amplified the thrill. I simply couldn’t say no to the President.

Ironically, I’d been offered a summer internship – which I hadn’t even applied for – because I’d attended the same exclusive girl’s boarding school as Kennedy’s wife Jacqueline.

If I had a political affiliation at all, it probably leaned more towards the moderate Republicanism of my wealthy parents – who’d voted for Richard Nixon in the 1960 presidential race – rather than Kennedy’s Democratic politics.

Like many young people back then, however, I wasn’t immune to the star power of the dynamic new President and his glamorous young wife – so I wrote to Jackie, asking for an interview for the school magazine.

My request was turned down, but instead I was offered a visit to the White House and an interview with the First Lady’s social secretary, Letitia Baldridge.

Perhaps she was merely extending an extra dose of kindness to a girl from Mrs. Kennedy’s school, but Miss Baldrige had clearly given thought to my visit. After the interview, she added me to a line-up of children meeting the President that day.

Of course, I was nervous and star-struck; what high school student wouldn’t be? President Kennedy was taller, thinner, more handsome in person than he looked in photographs.

When it was my turn to shake hands, he smiled and asked me about my school, and where I was going to college next year. <<Well, it’s nice to see you,>> he said. <<Good luck.>>

Just over a year later, I was invited back to the White House as an intern.

I sat in a room with <<the girls>>, as the secretaries were called, and my job was to collect the streams of paper spitting out of the teletype machines, clip them into foot-long sections and hand them to the President’s press secretary, Pierre Salinger.

It was hardly rocket science, but I had a mini panic attack on the first day and couldn’t sleep at night for fear of messing up.

To say that I lacked sophistication is an understatement: I was a skinny 5ft 9in former debutante – nicknamed Monkey at school – who wore no make-up and had a singular lack of success with men (total experience: one kiss in the eighth grade).

Once, my brother Josh had even dangled a five-dollar bill behind my back to entice other dance partners to cut in.

This, then, was the girl sitting at her desk when she took a call from Dave Powers, the President’s special assistant. I’d met him only briefly, but he was asking me to come for a midday swim in the White House pool.

Who, me? I suppose my first thought should have been to question the propriety of this invitation, but I was thrown off balance.

The pool room had one mirrored wall, with the other three sides painted with floor-to-ceiling scenes of palm trees and sailboats. To my relief, two colleagues – a girl called Fiddle and her friend Jill, inevitably known as Diddle – appeared at the entrance and showed me where to find a spare swimsuit.

As I walked past the mirror toward the edge, I stole a glance at myself in the borrowed suit and felt a wave of relief. I may not have had curves, but at least I had good posture and long legs.

The water was as warm as that in a bathtub – as I learned later, the temperature was always set at 90 degrees to soothe JFK’s chronic back pain. I was treading water with Fiddle and Jill when the President himself walked in.

<<Mind if I join you?>> he asked. He was remarkably fit – flat stomach, toned arms – for a 45-year-old man. After sliding into the pool, he floated up to me.

<<It’s Mimi, isn’t it?>> he said <<And you’re in the press office this summer, right?>>

He asked what I’d been given to do, and I told him.

<<Well, nice to see you, Mimi,>> he said, and floated away toward Fiddle and Jill. Back at my desk, I felt self-conscious and kept my head down.

Most of my colleagues gauged their status by how much contact they’d had with the President – or even if the President knew their names.

Now an insignificant intern was leapfrogging career women who’d labored long and hard on the presidential campaign.

My hair was still damp when Dave Powers rang again, asking if I’d like to meet everybody after work for a welcome-to-the-staff get-together upstairs. This was impossible to turn down.

I didn’t know what ‘upstairs’ meant, exactly, but I had enough sense not to ask any of the other women in the press office – in case they hadn’t been invited.

So, at 5.30, for the second time in a few hours, I followed Dave to an unfamiliar part of the White House. He was humming quietly to himself.

To my surprise, he took me to the West Sitting Hall – an elegant room in the family residence.

There I found Fiddle and Jill in conversation with a man named Kenny O’Donnell, the President’s appointments secretary.

<<Have a daiquiri,>> Dave said, pouring me a glass. <<Welcome to the White House staff.>>

As I ate the puffed cheese hors d’oeuvres, I listened to the others talking about Mrs. Kennedy, who’d just left for a break in Virginia with four-year-old Caroline and 18-month-old John John.

Suddenly, everyone rose to their feet, and into the room walked President Kennedy. I’m not sure why I was so surprised to see him for the second time that day. After all, he did live here.

He took off his jacket, sat down on the sofa, and put his feet up on a coffee table. I could feel the centre of gravity in the room shift immediately.

Keeping my eye on Fiddle and Jill, I was determined to leave when they did.

Then the President rose from the sofa and walked over to the chair I was sitting in. <<Would you like a tour of the residence, Mimi?>> he asked.

A private tour of the White House from the President of the United States! As I stood up, the daiquiris went immediately to my head. I looked around, tipsy, expecting the entire group to join us, but no one else moved. President Kennedy was already leaving the room, and I followed as if pulled by a magnet.

After showing me the family dining room, he opened another door, stepping aside for me to enter.

<<This is Mrs. Kennedy’s bedroom,>> he said.

That was odd, I thought. Where did he sleep? It was a beautiful room, decorated in a light powder blue with floor-to-ceiling windows and a bed with a draped canopy.

Together we looked out of the window at the fading June sun. <<Beautiful light, isn’t it?>> he said.

Then he showed me some personal memorabilia: a pastel of Caroline, a terracotta bust of a young boy. I noticed he was moving closer and closer. I could feel his breath on my neck. He put his hand on my shoulder.

<<This is a very private room,>> he said. The next thing I knew, he was standing in front of me, his face inches away, his eyes staring directly into mine.

He placed both hands on my shoulders and guided me toward the edge of the bed. I landed on my elbows, frozen halfway between sitting up and lying on my back.

Slowly, he unbuttoned the top of my shirtdress and touched my breasts. Then he started to pull off my underwear.

I couldn’t believe what was happening. Nor could I believe what I did next: I finished unbuttoning my shirtdress and let it fall off my shoulders.

Then he was above me. He paused briefly when he felt some physical resistance.

<<Haven’t you done this before?>> he asked. <<No>>, I said. <<Are you OK?>> he asked. Yes, I replied, and he resumed, but more gently. <<Are you OK?>> he kept saying. I nodded.

After he’d finished, he smiled at me and suggested I use the bathroom. When I came out, he was waiting for me in the West Sitting Hall, which was now deserted. I was in shock. He, on the other hand, was matter-of-fact, and acted as if what had just occurred was the most natural thing in the world.

What I really wanted to do was leave, and he must have sensed that. He made a phone call, and then explained that a car would pick me up at the South Portico entrance.

I wasn’t revolted or appalled, but I was certainly confused. Back in my room, after a shower to wash off the smell of his 4711 cologne, I thought: <<So that’s sex?>> I didn’t know if it had been good, bad, or indifferent.

Had Dave orchestrated the whole thing? And did Fiddle and Jill know what was about to happen?

I suspect they did. Fragments from recently released papers and memoirs suggest that one or both of them had also had sex with the President – though I didn’t know that at the time.

Nor did I know that he undoubtedly had other lovers at the same time he was seeing me.

What was clear to me was that the President was adept at – and accustomed to – getting his way.

And he had that politician’s gift of making you feel that when you were in his company, you were the most important and interesting person in the world.

Our affair, which lasted until his death 18 months later, began in earnest the following week. All that summer, I’d swim with the President, race back to my desk, and then wait for a call to come upstairs.

The governing factor behind these calls, of course, was the presence – or, more accurately, the absence – of Mrs. Kennedy, who was away with the children for most of the summer.

After that first night, we never went back to her bedroom. Instead, we stayed in his, which had a lovely antique four-poster bed and piles of books, newspapers, and magazines scattered about. As we spent more and more time together, the absurdity of our relationship, and my self-consciousness, gradually began to wear off.

He was more attentive, more gentlemanly than he’d been in our first encounter. Sometimes he’d be seductive; other times he was in no mood to linger.

Our sexual relationship was varied and fun, and we spent an inordinate amount of time taking baths together, turning his elegant bathroom into our own mini-spa.

The only discordant note was the yellow rubber ducks, which a friend had sent him. Every time the President saw those ducks, he’d become irresistibly playful.

We named them after his family members, made up stories about them, and often set them racing from one end of the tub to other. It was part of his charm that he was a serious, sophisticated man with extraordinary responsibilities, yet willing to be completely silly.

After our baths, we’d have a light meal – usually whatever the staff had left in the kitchen refrigerator, but he also taught me how to scramble eggs the way he liked them, slowly stirring them.

At some point in the evening, he’d put on a record – usually Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett.

Sometimes, if it got too late, I’d stay the night, which at the time seemed perfectly natural.

He’d lend me one of his soft blue cotton nightshirts to wear. In the morning, I’d often wake to find him having breakfast in bed and reading newspapers.

The Secret Service agents knew I was there. Indeed, I never felt I had to sneak out of the residence in the early hours before the staff arrived. On the contrary, I felt comfortable lingering there.

I was so pleased with myself at being chosen by the President that I didn’t feel self-conscious at all about wearing the same clothes at work two days in a row.

If my office mates noticed, I didn’t care. I felt invulnerable, as if I were cloaked with the President’s power.

It shames me to admit that I don’t recall feeling any guilt. In my 19-year-old mind, I wasn’t invading the Kennedys’ marriage; I was merely occupying the President’s time when his wife was away. If he wasn’t troubled, why should I be? It was hardly by chance that in the 18 months I knew him, I never once met his wife.

Frequently, he’d summon me openly to the Oval Office and ask me to administer a hair treatment before one of his televised press conferences.

Then he’d close his eyes and lean back in his rocking chair while I massaged some tonic and an amber-colored ointment into his scalp, and brushed his hair into place. As the summer wore on, I was pulled deeper into his personal orbit. But despite the increasing level of familiarity between us, I never rose above being the obedient partner in our relationship.

Even in our most intimate moments, I called him Mr. President. To do otherwise would have seemed inappropriate.

Some evenings, we’d have drinks with Dave Powers, with whom I developed a close friendship.

Since neither of them could believe I wasn’t the object of universal pursuit, they were always teasing me about boyfriends. Dave, I felt, had an avuncular interest in making sure I didn’t get hurt. Of course, now I realize that he wasn’t taking care of me at all; he was taking care of the President.

Still, we were a good trio. Or we were, until a callous and unforgiveable incident threatened to destroy our ease in each other’s company.

The President and I were in the pool, splashing playfully, while Dave Powers was sitting on the edge, with his feet dangling in the water. Then JFK swam over and whispered in my ear: <<Mr Powers looks a little tense – would you take care of it?>>

I knew exactly what that meant: it was a dare to give Dave Powers oral sex.

I don’t think the President thought I’d do it, but I’m ashamed to say that I did. It was a pathetic, sordid scene, and I can hardly bear to think about it. Dave was jolly and obedient as I stood in the shallow end of the pool and performed my duties. The President silently watched.

Try as I may, I cannot explain why, without hesitation, I obeyed his command. Perhaps I was carried away by a spirit of playfulness.

Perhaps I was in thrall to his charm and authority.

No doubt my own insecurity and need for his approval had something to do with it. What I do know is that Dave and I were umbilically linked to each other in our devotion to President Kennedy.

But now the man who’d engaged our complete loyalty had gone too far. He’d emotionally abused me and debased Dave. For what? To watch me perform and to show Dave how much he controlled us?

Afterwards, I was deeply embarrassed. As I climbed out of the pool, I heard Dave say sternly to his boss: <<You shouldn’t have made her do that.>>

<<I know, I know,>> was the reply. Later, a chastened President Kennedy apologized to us both.

For the first time, I’d seen his dark side.

I saw it again a year later, when I was in a room with him and his younger brother, Teddy.

Once again, he tried to show off his power over me, this time suggesting: <<Mimi, why don’t you take care of my baby brother – he could stand a little relaxation.>>

This time I felt a flash of anger. And for the first time, I stood up to him.

<<You’ve got to be kidding,>> I said. <<Absolutely not, Mr. President.>>”

Blue Ivy first pictures shared by Beyoncé and Jay-Z

The biggest surprise of the day has been made by Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z as they shared the first pictures of their baby, Blue Ivy Carter.

Beyoncé, 30, and Jay-Z, 42, posted a series of intimate portraits of their beloved daughter, who was born just over a month ago.

Instead of selling their first baby pictures to a glossy magazine for millions the music megastar couple decided to take control posting snaps of Blue Ivy to a tumblr.com blog.

In one snap, Beyoncé is seen beaming into the camera while she cradles her daughter in her arms.

While the camera is out of focus on Beyoncé, with clarity on baby Blue, the singer’s blue nails can be clearly seen, no doubt a tribute to her little bundle.

The proud parents set up a blog that shows the intimate family snaps along with a message.

It read: “We welcome you to share in our joy. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives. The Carter Family.”

There are several close ups of the adorable little girl, who not only has a healthy head of hair but also displays a rose-bud mouth and almond shaped brown eyes.

In one shot the Blue Ivy is seen staring past the camera, and in another the photographer has captured the tiny bundle sleeping.

The emotional and captivating shots are the first of their kind of Blue Ivy to be released to the public.

And it was only last week that Beyoncé made her first public appearance since the birth on January 7, showing off her incredible post-labour curves.

The singer stepped out twice in as many nights last week and it was almost unbelievable to think she gave birth a month earlier.

It wasn’t just her figure she was showing off Beyoncé was also seen sporting a chunky piece of bling which she was given as a “push present”.

Jay-Z is believed to have bought the blue ring, in honor of their daughter’s name, in a tradition that sees new fathers reward the mother after she gives birth to their child.

Ever the fashionista, the large jewel was coordinated with Beyoncé ‘s blue nail polish as she made her second public appearance since becoming a mother on January 7.

Beyoncé’s first “stepping out” was the previous evening last Monday night as she showcased her post-baby curves in a red Alice Temperley cocktail dress, which was undeniably striking.

It was a wise move as Beyoncé looked picture perfect for the first night of Jay-Z’s two-legged occupation of NYC’s Carnegie Hall.

Marjorie and James Landis, married for 65 years, die 88 minutes apart

Marjorie and James Landis from Pennsylvania, who were married for 65 years, were so inseparable in life that not even death could keep them apart, as they died within 88 minutes of each other on Monday.

Marjorie Landis, 87, died at the Laurelwood Care Center near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, following a long illness. James Landis, 89, died of a heart attack just 88 minutes later.

The couple’s granddaughter, Erin Miller, told the Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown that the last thing her grandfather said to her grandmother was: “It’s OK. I love you. We had many good years together. I will see you real soon.”

Marjorie and James Landis met at a dance in Johnstown when they were both with other people.

But they eventually paired off and got married in 1946 becoming almost instantly inseparable.

Marjorie and James Landis from Pennsylvania, who were married for 65 years, were so inseparable in life that not even death could keep them apart, as they died within 88 minutes of each other

Marjorie and James Landis celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in September 2011.

Erin Miller said of her grandfather, a former Air Force pilot: “I just think he died of a broken heart. I don’t think they could have lived apart from each other.”

When Erin Miller was looking for photographs of the pair for their funeral, she said it was hard to find any of them apart as they were always together.

According to the Tribune Democrat, the couple started their married life in Pittsburgh, where James Landis attended Pitt following his military service.

James Landis earned a degree in engineering and eventually went to work for Bethlehem Steel while she stayed at home and looked after their two children Gary and Gail.

The couple’s case is not uncommon.

In January, Richard and Nancy Trimmer, also from Pennsylvania, died within 12 hours of each other.

Both are reminiscent of the 2004 film, The Notebook, which tells the story of an epic romance which ends when the couple dies at the same time after decades of a happy marriage.

A study published in 2007 by researchers at the University of Glasgow found that bereaved widows or widowers were at least 30% more likely to die within the first six months of their partner’s death than those of the same age who hadn’t lost a spouse.

Some experts say that after being with someone for such a long period of time, especially after sleeping next to each other, one person’s heartbeat can affect and regulate another person’s heartbeat.

This is usually why the number one cause of death for bereaved spouses is heart disease and sudden death.

Macaulay Culkin sparks concern as he appears disheveled and emaciated

Macaulay Culkin was once the mischievous, cherubic star of the hugely successful Home Alone movies, but now he appeared disheveled and emaciated as he greeted fans in New York on Wednesday.

Macaulay Culkin, 31, with his straggly goatee beard and messy hair, looked gaunt as he sipped from an energy drink.

On Thursday night Macaulay Culkin pulled out of his monthly deejay gig Le Poisson Rouge in New York City’s West Village.

“He’s here all the time. He comes pretty often,” a club employee told People magazine.

“Tonight, something just came up and he couldn’t make it.”

But his spokesperson insists there is no need for concern, saying in a statement: “Macaulay Culkin is in perfectly good health.”

Macaulay Culkin was once the mischievous, cherubic star of the hugely successful Home Alone movies, but now he appeared disheveled and emaciated as he greeted fans in New York on Wednesday

Macaulay Culkin’s appearance was a far cry from the cute youngster who shot to international fame playing cheeky Kevin McCallister in the 1990 family favorite.

He was once Hollywood’s biggest child star, commanding $6 million a film by the time he starred in 1994’s Richie Rich.

But the young actor soon hit troubled times and has weathered a number of personal tragedies, including the death of his sister Dakota in a car crash and of his half-sister Jennifer Adamson from a drug overdose.

Macaulay Culkin’s career then came to a halt after he was embroiled in a messy financial dispute between his parents Christopher Culkin and Patricia Brentup.

In 1998 a judge fired his father – who was his manager – and handed control of his vast personal fortune to an accountant until he turned 18.

After a hiatus, Macaulay Culkin returned to films in 2000.

However, none of his subsequent movies have come near to matching the success of the Home Alone series.

“I’m the most out-of-work actor I know,” Macaulay Culkin once said.

In 2004, Macaulay Culkin was arrested after police stopped a car in which he was a passenger and found more than a half-ounce of marijuana and several tablets of Xanax, a prescription medication used to treat depression and panic disorders.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of possession of medication without a prescription and marijuana.

Macaulay Culkin was given one year deferred sentences on each of the charges and ordered to pay $540 in fees.

The actor married actress Rachel Miner in 1998 but they divorced in 2002.

Macaulay Culkin went on to date Black Swan star Mila Kunis for 8 years before the pair separated in 2010.

The Home alone star had a famously close relationship with Michael Jackson during his youth, and even testified for the late singer’s defense in his child-molestation trial in 2005.

Macaulay Culkin took the stand and vehemently denied any inappropriate behavior or touching during the times he slept at Jackson’s Neverland Ranch.

He was among the mourners at the King of Pop’s funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, in September 2009.

Macaulay Culkin is rumored to be starring in the upcoming British military film Service Man, which is set for release next year.

ACTA day of action

ACTA protest

Dear friends,

Politicians across Europe are starting to withdraw their support from the dangerous ACTA treaty. This weekend’s mass protest is our moment to bury ACTA for good. Click to join the day of action, in person or virtually — let’s win this!

Take action now

In 24 hours, people across the planet are joining a global street protest to bury ACTA for good.

This week our massive 2 million ACTA petition caused shockwaves in Brussels, and we’ve just learned that Germany has put ACTA on ice and other governments are close to following suit. If Europe says no to ACTA, it dies!  We’re at a tipping point — If enough of us join the protest tomorrow, we can secure our online freedom and end the threat of ACTA’s censorship nightmare.

Let’s turn out in thousands to protest or, if we can’t be there in person (most of the protests are in Europe), send messages of solidarity to our fellow citizens who are marching. Click here to use our map tool to find an event near you, or leave a solidarity message for marchers:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/acta_day_of_action_hub/?vl

Our massive ACTA petition was personally delivered to leading EU politicians in Brussels this week as it grew to 2.2 million signers and beyond. The European Parliament is choosing their new point person on the treaty right now. Let’s make sure that person realises that ACTA is too hot to handle.

Four Eastern European governments and now Germany have just said they’ll stall their decision on the treaty. Now, if hundreds of thousands of people attend thousands of rallies all across Europe tomorrow, we can ensure that all politicians across the 27 EU countries are put on notice that people don’t want ACTA and will continue to take action until the treaty is buried.

Those of us in Europe can join the protests. And we all can send messages of solidarity to encourage the people there and use social media to pile the pressure on key parliamentarian. Click here to check out the action centre, and tell everyone.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/acta_day_of_action_hub/?vl

Again and again, we’ve shown how people power can work. When our fundamental freedoms are at stake, and we act together, we can forge an unstoppable force that makes politicians turn away from the corporate lobbies, and work in the interests of all of us. Let’s do it again.

With hope and determination,

Alex, Alice, Pascal, Emma, Ricken, Maria Paz, Luis and the rest of the Avaaz team

Kim Kardashian looks downcast as Kris Humphries tries to prove their marriage was a fraud

Kim Kardashian was spotted at the Bal Harbour luxury shopping mall in Miami, Florida, cutting a sad figure, a sign her ugly split from Kris Humphries is weighing heavily on her.

Kim Kardashian, 31, is said to have offered Kris Humphries a financial settlement in order to get their divorce completed as soon as possible.

But Kris Humphries is said to be adamant he doesn’t want any money and is determined to pursue his claim to have the divorce granted on the grounds of fraud, arguing that he and Kim Kardashian married under false pretences.

A source told RadarOnline.com: “There have been informal settlement talks going on between Kim and Kris’s respective lawyers.

“Team Humphries has made it crystal clear though that Kris isn’t seeking any money from Kim. Kris doesn’t want one penny from her.

“His lawyers have said the only terms acceptable for a settlement would be if Kim agrees to Kris’ contention that the marriage was a fraud.”

The insider added: “There is a stand-off at this point because Kim will never agree to that, she says the marriage wasn’t a fraud. It just didn’t work out.”

It was revealed earlier this week that Kris Humphries’ lawyers want to study video footage from reality show Kourtney and Kim Take New York as an emotional discussion between Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner about the marriage is alleged to have taken place on a soundstage in December, two months later than claimed in the show.

Kris Humphries’ legal team are said to feel this strengthens their claim for the marriage being a fraud.

In the reality show scene, Kim Kardashian emotionally tells her mother how things are just not turning out how she expected with Kris Humphries, while asking for her advice on what to do.

Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner were spotted leaving a Hollywood TV studio on December 6 with the 31-year-old socialite wearing the same outfit and hairstyle as she does in the scene.

Kris Jenner was photographed following her daughter out of the studio, with an assistant carrying the purple kaftan-style dress she wears in the scene, shot in the back of a limo.

Kris Humphries cited fraud as his official response to Kim Kardashian ‘s divorce petition – in his bid to seek an annulment instead – and wants his lawyer to question his estranged wife, her mother and staff from the show over the scenes, RadarOnline reported yesterday.

A source told RadarOnline: “Kris feels that if this is true and the whole conversation was faked, this would help prove that he got married under fraudulent circumstances.

“Yes, this did occur after the marriage, but this is one clear example that could help sway the judge to grant the divorce on the grounds of fraud.”

During the scene, Kim Kardashian tells her momanger Kris Jenner: “Married life just isn’t what I thought it would be with him.”

“I keep thinking something is off,” Kim Kardashian went on, asking her mother if this was a normal feeling to experience in the early days of marriage.

Kris Jenner responds, saying it is not normal, recalling how she and Kim’s father Rob Kardashian were “obsessed with each other” for at least the first 10 years.

“I didn’t even want him to go to work,” Kris Jenner recalled.

The mother explained: “This is not normal… that you don’t want to go home to your new husband.”

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian wants her divorce petition heard by a mediator.

Kim Kardashian is reportedly keen to have her marriage to 26-year-old NBA star Kris Humphries legally ended as soon as possible and plans to request that the proceedings are held in private.

A source said: “A public trial is the last thing that Kim wants, and she has instructed her lawyer to formally petition the court so that the divorce can be heard by a mediator, which is routinely done in California, since it’s a no-fault state.

“Kim doesn’t want a long drawn out trial. She wants the mediation to be private, confidential, and legally binding.

“She and Kris have no assets together and kept separate bank accounts, so this is a fairly routine divorce proceeding. Kim just wants this over and done with.”

FBI released its investigative files on the rich and the famous

After FBI released yesterday its investigative file on Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, more files of the famous and the rich have become public.

In the 1950’s, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, best known for their comedy sketch Who’s on First?, caught the FBI’s attention for other reasons.

“A police informant furnished information to the effect that Bud Abbott, the well-known motion picture and television star, is a collector of pornography, and alleged he has 1,500 reels of obscene motion pictures,” an agent wrote in an FBI file.

Of Lou Costello, agents reported: “Information was secured reflecting that two prostitutes put on a lewd performance for Lou Costello,” for which they were paid $50 each.

On Thursday, the FBI released a far less salacious file on Steve Jobs, which was compiled in 1991 after President George Bush Sr. weighed appointing him to an international trade council.

The FBI has also compiled, and subsequently released to the public, hundreds of files on movie stars, US and foreign political figures, athletes, writers, musicians and others.

Some, like late model Anna Nicole Smith, turn up in FBI files because they had been threatened with extortion or violence.

Others, like writer Norman Mailer or actor Charlie Chaplin, were suspected communist sympathizers, and those like John Lennon were watched for their involvement in anti-war politics.

During the era of legendary FBI director J Edgar Hoover, “you could find a reason to open a file on anyone”, says Steve Rosswurm, a historian at Lake Forest College in Illinois and author of a book about the FBI’s dealings with the Catholic Church.

“The reasons for the surveillance are as varied as the people being watched,” said British writer Nicholas Redfern, author of Celebrity Secrets: Official Government Files on the Rich and Famous.

“It was very much dependent upon the character or the situation the subject of the file was in.”

Today, the bureau’s Cold War-era fears of communist infiltration, obscenity and homosexuality sound almost quaint.

The early rock and roll song Louie Louie by the Kingsmen, for instance, was the subject of a 119-page file. The lyrics, written in a quasi-Caribbean metre, are famously difficult to discern.

Some, including an official at a Florida high school and Indiana Governor Matthew Welsh, suspected the words were secretly obscene, and the FBI launched an investigation.

“The laboratory is requested to determine if enclosed record Louie Louie can be considered obscene for purposes of prosecution,” an agent wrote in the file.

“You had this very bizarre situation: the nation’s leading crime-fighting service tapping their toes, listening to Louie Louie,” says Nicholas Redfern.

The bureau’s agents famously kept tabs on entertainment and political figures suspected of communist ties.

“In the Hoover period, people were investigated under suspicion of disloyalty,” said Jon Wiener, a historian at the University of California-Irvine and author of a book on the FBI’s investigation of John Lennon.

“Now, we consider this an abuse of power.”

John Lennon, for instance, was feared for his influence in the anti-Vietnam war movement, and was watched for years.

The bureau eventually released files that contained little more than bizarre details, like a description of another anti-war activist trying to teach a parrot to repeat swear words.

In 1962, J. Edgar Hoover requested a memo on Pulitzer prize-winning author Norman Mailer.

The subsequent file notes that Norman Mailer had admitted on a radio programme to being a “leftist”.

Norman Mailer denounced the FBI as a secret police organization and called for its dismantlement.

Agents also had Norman Mailer down as sympathetic to Fidel Castro’s communist Cuba.

Marilyn Monroe’s file notes she had been linked to the Kennedys and was married for a time to the playwright Arthur Miller, who was suspected of being a communist sympathizer.

Other pop cultural figures were more obviously legitimate subjects of criminal investigation or security planning.

Frank Sinatra, for example, was rumored to have mob ties, and his son was kidnapped at one point.

The bureau compiled a relatively brief 34-page file on guitarist Jimi Hendrix following his arrest in 1969 by Toronto police on a drug charge.

“If he is found innocent of the charge, Canadian Immigration would like to deport him anyway to the US if it can be shown he has prior criminal convictions,” an agent wrote.

The FBI’s file includes information about the guitarist’s criminal history, including an arrest in 1961 for driving a car without the owner’s permission.

Princess Diana’s file lists the schedule for a 1989 visit to New York and notes Northern Irish political groups had planned protests.

After J. Edgar Hoover’s death in 1972 the bureau underwent significant post-Watergate reform, with the government reining in its authority to launch political investigations.

“Prior to Watergate, in general the FBI was considered, certainly by the bureau and by the Department of Justice, to have a very broad definition of how to go about a domestic security investigation,” says John Fox, the FBI’s official historian.

However, civil liberties groups say the FBI’s power to pursue investigations in the name of counter-terrorism remains overly broad.

It is, of course, unclear which if any living celebrities and entertainers have been investigated by the FBI. US privacy laws forbid the release of FBI files on living people without their consent.

“Do I think there’s a Britney Spears file?” asks Nicholas Redfern.

“No, I probably don’t. She’s not hanging out with the president and she’s not linked with the mob, and she’s not hanging out with German spies.”

Steve Jobs’ FBI file: a respected innovator with a questionable moral character

Steve Jobs was a man who commanded respect as an innovator but was questioned on his honesty and morality, according to his FBI file, which has been released recently.

Steve Jobs’ file was prepared on the Apple founder as he was considered for a presidential appointment in 1991 during George H. W. Bush’s time in office.

His file also revealed that Steve Jobs had been the victim of an extortive bomb threat in 1985.

Documents note, too, his conversion to Buddhism and admissions of drug use.

Steve Jobs’ file has been made public on Thursday through freedom of information laws, and posted to the FBI’s website.

“Several individuals questioned Mr. Jobs’ honesty stating that Mr. Jobs will twist the truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals,” said a summary of the FBI background check.

A former business associate who blamed Steve Jobs because he had not received lucrative stock he thought was due to him characterized the Apple founder as an “honest and trustworthy individual; however, his moral character is questionable”.

Others told the interviewer that Steve Jobs was difficult to work with, no surprise given details of his volatile temperament that emerged in his biography last year.

The unfavorable comments gleaned during the background check did not prevent Steve Jobs being appointed to an unpaid post advising the president on export policy.

Steve Jobs died in October last year after a years-long struggle with cancer.

The interviewees’ names have been redacted by the FBI, with the exception of Steve Jobs himself.

Steve Jobs admitted to experimenting with drugs, including LSD, in the ‘70’s.

Another interviewee spoke of Steve Jobs’ high-profile reputation within Silicon Valley.

Steve Jobs was “not an engineer in the real sense”, the source says, but “an innovative force within the technical community”.

How Google’s algorithm finds the funniest YouTube video clips

Google’s brain-box researchers have managed to come up with a formula for working out which YouTube video clips are the funniest.

Google researchers’ algorithm has declared that a video of a cat appearing to say “no” over and over again – called No No No Cat – is currently the funniest.

This video only has just over 60,000 hits – which is small compared to the millions some clips clock up – but Google turned its attention to the comments users leave to gauge comedy value.

Google Researcher Sanketh Shetty says the key to the formula is how people express their mirth.

Sanketh Shetty wrote in a blog post: “We noticed that viewers emphasize their reaction to funny videos in several ways: e.g. capitalization (LOL), elongation (loooooool), repetition (lolololol), exclamation (lolllll!!!!!), and combinations thereof.

“If a user uses an <<loooooool>> vs an <<loool>>, does it mean they were more amused? We designed features to quantify the degree of emphasis on words associated with amusement in viewer comments.”

Comments posted for No No No Cat certainly reflected this, with kayleighzoe1 writing “lololololollololololol” and muretto89 saying “XD LOL XD”.

Google also took other factors into account such as how videos were described by the uploader and tagged and whether audible laughter can be heard in the background.

Google also used its research to populate a list of candidates for YouTube’s Comedy Slam feature, where users can vote for the videos they laughed at the most. No No No Cat received the most votes.

The number two slot is currently occupied by “Guy gets Killed By Bear”, featuring a comedy kung-fu duel.

At number three is Marshmallow Murder, where “talking” marshmallows are skewered and burned.

Number four is a clip of an elderly gentleman showing off his dance moves, called Old Man Shuffling and number five is a cartoon of a misunderstood Italian holidaying in Malta, called Angry Italian man!

Cannabis consumers are twice as likely to cause a car crash

A Canadian study found that drivers who use cannabis within three hours of driving are twice as likely to cause a collision as those not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Scientists suggest this is because cannabis impairs brain and motor functions needed for safe driving.

The study in bmj.com reviewed nine studies of 50,000 people worldwide who had been in serious or fatal crashes.

Experts support the close monitoring of serious accidents involving drugs.

The study analysis was carried out by researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.

They looked at observational studies of collisions between one or more moving vehicles on a public road which involved the consumption of cannabis.

Drivers of cars, sports utility vehicles, vans, lorries, buses and motorcycles featured in the studies.

The study found a near doubling of risk of a driver being involved in a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious injury or death if cannabis had been consumed less than three hours before.

However, it added that the impact of acute cannabis consumption on the risk of minor crashes was still unclear.

Mark Asbridge, study author and associate professor at the department of community health and epidemiology at Dalhousie University, said the research was important.

“Our findings provide clarity to the large body of research on cannabis and collision risk.

“They also offer support to existing policies, in many jurisdictions, that restrict driving under the influence of cannabis, and direct public health officials to devote greater attention to this issue.”

All studies tested for tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active chemical in cannabis, by analyzing blood samples or using direct reports of cannabis use from those involved.

Most studies used one nanogram per millilitre of cannabis or any amount greater than zero as the cut-off for a positive test result, with one study using a 2 ng/ml cut-off.

The Canadian study cites a roadside survey of 537 drivers in Scotland in 2000 which found that 15% of respondents aged 17-39 years admitted to having consumed cannabis within 12 hours of driving a vehicle.

The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction found in 2008 that between 0.3% and 7.4% of drivers tested positive for cannabis from roadside surveys in the United Kingdom, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, the United States, and Australia.

The researchers conclude that despite the increased risk posed by cannabis to car drivers, alcohol remains the substance most often present in crashes.

The observed association between alcohol and crash risk is more significant than that for cannabis, the study says.
