Japan earthquake and tsunami: loss and recovery in numbers

0

One year after north-eastern Japan was shaken by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and inundated by tsunami waters, the National Police Agency figures show the scale of the disaster and how much progress the country has made towards recovery.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami that tore through the country’s north-eastern coastal communities killed almost 16,000 people and destroyed the lives of thousands more.

The double disaster, which in turn triggered a third crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant, may have been a year ago, but for many of those in the worst-affected areas life remains in a state of turmoil.

In Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures whole communities were wiped out by the ferocious power of the tsunami. On top of the current known death toll, a further 3,000 people are still listed as missing.

Even among those that survived, many were unable to return home. According to the Japanese authorities, more than 330,000 are still living in some kind of temporary accommodation, including those staying with friends and family or in hotels. More than 500 remain in evacuation centres.

National Police Agency of Japan figures show almost 300,000 buildings were destroyed and a further one million damaged, either by the quake, tsunami or resulting fires. Almost 4,000 roads, 78 bridges and 29 railways were also affected.

Patrick Fuller, of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and who was there in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, tells of the “complete and utter devastation”.

“The only way I can describe how it was is that it was just like out of the Terminator movie – a futuristic scene of mangled and twisted wreckage.”

The Japanese authorities estimate a staggering 25 million tons of debris was generated in the three worst-affected prefectures. This is many times greater than the amount created by the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Consequently, the clean-up has been a mammoth task, even for a nation known for its preparedness.

Much of the rubble and waste has been cleared from the streets, but the Japanese environment ministry last month revealed only 5% had been disposed of and 72% was still being stored at temporary sites.

Officials explained the delays had been caused by a number of factors, including difficulties finding sites for incinerators in affected areas and the reluctance in other prefectures of Japan to take the waste amid fears of radiation contamination.

Environment Minister Goshi Hosono said the ministry’s original goal of completing disposal by the end of March 2014 was unrealistic and urged other parts of the country to help out.

However, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says the Japanese authorities have made remarkable progress considering the upheaval and disruption caused by the disaster.

The organization praised Japan’s emphasis on waste segregation and recycling and said lessons could be learned from the way the country had managed the quake and tsunami debris.

Yet, while most the rubble and waste has been cleared, there remain long stretches of empty coastline where rebuilding has yet to take place. In fact, debate still continues on whether some residential areas should be moved inland and to higher ground.

A survey by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper late last year found that 26 out of 37 municipalities in coastal areas of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures were considering large-scale residential relocations.

A more recent survey for the same paper found 72% of respondents said they could see little or no progress in reconstruction efforts. Asked to choose one or more explanations why, 75% blamed the Fukushima nuclear crisis, 63% said it was the devastating impact of the earthquake, while 61% agreed there were problems in the government’s response to the disaster.

But Patrick Fuller of the Red Cross points out that many towns destroyed by the quake and tsunami are “starting from scratch” and that Japan’s progress after a year compares to that achieved in three years in places like Indonesia and Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami.

The task for the Japanese government now is to help its people get back on their feet, given the inevitable crippling economic cost of such a disaster, he says.

Last year, the Cabinet Office of Japan estimated it cost the country 16.9 trillion yen ($210 billion).

But the country’s national and local authorities believe the reconstruction will actually cost more than 23 trillion yen ($286 billion) over a decade.

Crucial to the rebuilding is getting affected communities back to work and giving them a sense of purpose, says Patrick Fuller.

“This is going to take a monumental effort from the government and it is going to take years.”

Japan marks one year from the devastating earthquake and tsunami

Japan marks one year commemoration of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, which struck the north-eastern coast, leaving 20,000 dead or missing.

The 9-magnitude quake, Japan’s most powerful since records began, also triggered a serious nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Thousands of people were evacuated as radiation leaked from the plant.

There were memorial services, and a minute’s silence was observed at the moment the quake hit, 14:46 local time.

The main memorial ceremony was held at Tokyo’s National Theatre, attended by Japan’s Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

“We shall not let our memory of the disasters fade,” Emperor Akihito said in a brief televised address.

“I hope all the people will keep the victims in their hearts.”

PM Yoshihiko Noda pledged to rebuild so that Japan could be reborn “as an even better place”.

Much of Japan came to a standstill as the minute of silence was observed.

Warning sirens sounded across the north-east of the country at the precise time the quake struck, 14:46 local time. Bells and prayers also reverberated across the country.

The earthquake struck about 400 km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo on 11 March 2011.

Shortly after the quake, an immense surge of water enveloped the north-eastern coast as a tsunami swept cars, ships, and buildings away, crushing coastal communities.

The twin natural disasters claimed more than 15,800 lives, and more than 3,000 people remain unaccounted for.

In the Fukushima prefecture, where the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is located, the impact of the disaster was particularly acute.

Radiation leaked from the plant after a series of fires and explosions damaged four of the plant’s six reactor buildings, with serious failures in the plant’s cooling system being at the heart of the problem.

A 20 km (12.5 mile) exclusion zone around the plant was put in place making tens of thousands of people homeless. Radiation means the area around remains uninhabitable.

The plant is in cold shutdown now and PM Yoshihiko Noda has promised that over the decades to come it will be decommissioned. He has also pledged to rebuild the devastated towns along the coast.

However, Japan is still dealing with the economic and political fallout of the disaster. Japan’s prime minister at the time of the disaster, Naoto Kan, resigned months later.

Naoto Kan had been criticized for failing to show leadership during the nuclear crisis after the quake. The nuclear crisis also revealed serious flaws in the nuclear industry’s regulatory systems and safety standards.

Although much of the debris has been cleared, survivors from the devastated north-east have complained about slow recovery efforts.

Bobbi Kristina Brown found her interview with Oprah Winfrey as a healing experience

Bobbi Kristina Brown found speaking to Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter about her mother Whitney Houston’s death a “healing” experience.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, 19, who is the sole benefactor of her mother’s will, will see her interview with Oprah Winfrey aired by OWN on Sunday, March 11, and is said to be “really happy” with the way it turned out.

An insider told HollywoodLife.com: “She is happy with the way it turned out. The interview really was a healing experience for her and it allowed her to really shed some major emotion, it was almost a form of therapy.

“It was an overall good experience for the family and Bobbi Kristina, they are all happy with how it turned out.”

Despite Bobbi Kristina being pleased with the interview, it has previously been claimed other members of Whitney Houston’s family are keen to keep her out of the limelight following her mother’s shock death on February 11.

A source recently said: “There is still no resolution and there has been nothing concrete on the cause of death, and they were hoping for that.

“There were members of the family who weren’t keen on [the interview] going down at this time.

“There are people who just want her to stay out of the limelight for a while. This is a little girl who just needs some time.”

Daylight saving time in US: turn your clock 1 hour ahead at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday as spring arrives

Don’t forget to turn your clocks one hour ahead at 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday for the daylight saving time, if you stay in the US!

Not every place makes the switch, though. Hawaii, Arizona outside the Navajo Indian territories, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas stay on standard time, which returns for the rest of us November 4, two days before election time.

Emergency officials recommend you use the bi-annual occasion as a reminder to test your safety equipment.

For example, check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors, and replace the batteries if necessary. For those that don’t have the detectors, now is the time to buy them.

Kris Humphries is seeking $7M from Kim Kardashian to avoid a public divorce trial

Kris Humphries is seeking $7 million from his estranged wife Kim Kardashian to avoid a public divorce trial, claimed new reports.

Kris Humphries, 27, has allegedly given Kim Kardashian, 31, an ultimatum: pay up or endure a public trial, according to TMZ.

TMZ sources claimed that Kris Humphries made the demand through his Minnesota-based lawyer Lee Hutton.

But the Kardashian camp immediately rejected Kris Humphries’ ultimatum.

There were also rumors that the New Jersey Nets player would be representing himself if the case goes to the trial.

But his representatives say those reports are simply not true.

Kris Humphries was hoping to hire a Minnesota lawyer to handle his divorce case in court.

California law requires a local lawyer to assist, so Kris Humphries was forced to hire a Los Angeles lawyer.

Then, the Los Angeles lawyer withdrew, leading to reports that Kris Humphries would be representing himself.

A source told HollywoodLife.com that those report were completely false.

“He’s simply in the process of changing his L.A.-based attorney. And, his Minnesota-based lawyer, Lee Hutton, will still be the lead attorney anyway in court,” the source told HollywoodLife.com.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were married in August 2011 in a lavish ceremony that was broadcast on the E! cable network.

Kim Kardashian announced she was filing for divorce less than three months later citing “irreconcilable differences”.

The couple is said to have a prenuptial agreement, and, sources told TMZ, Kris Humphries made $1 million from the wedding and TV special as well as $250-300,000 from his time on the Kardashians’ reality shows.

Kris Humphries is also seeking an annulment to the marriage instead of a divorce, citing “fraud”.

Yesterday, Kris Humphries reportedly hired Los Angeles-based attorney, Marshall Waller, to represent him in court.

Jessica Labrie, Courtney Love’s ex-assistant, ready to reveal the singer’ secrets in a tell-all book

Jessica Labrie, Courtney Love’s former assistant, is said to be trying to sell a new bombshell book that could rip the lid off of the troubled singer’s life.

The tell-all proposal, tentatively titled “Get Me a Xanax”, is being shopped around to major literary agents in New York by Jessica Labrie, who worked for Courtney Love from 2010-2011.

TMZ obtained a copy of the proposal, which describes the story as “an unprecedented glimpse into the daily life of the chaotic widow of Kurt Cobain, by an innocuous girl who had the extraordinary chance to witness it all”.

Jessica Labrie makes many allegations in her proposal, including the disturbing claim that Courtney Love “still abuses cocaine and prescription drugs like Adderall and Xanax” even though the singer tells people she’s been clean for years.

So far, it is unclear if there’s much interest or if the book will get picked up.

Courtney Love, 47, immediately dismissed some of its claims telling TMZ, she hasn’t taken Adderall since November 2010 and adds: “I hate cocaine.”

The singer admitted she does take Xanax, but says she has a prescription.

Courtney Love frequently makes headlines for her outrageous antics, including her troubled relationship with her only child, daughter Frances Bean Cobain.

In January, Courtney Love was snapped stumbling out of a Golden Globes party in West Hollywood, California.

A month earlier, reports surfaced that she was being kicked out of her $27,000-a-month rented apartment in New York after wrecking the decor and causing a fire inside the home.

Courtney Love had been issued an eviction notice after the owner accused her of wrecking the historical $8 million home.

Donna Lyon, who owns the property, said Courtney Love caused more than $100,000 worth of damage since moving in and also owes $55,000 in unpaid rent.

Courtney Love fired back, explaining that she was told that she could make alterations to the decor.

“I moved into this home only on the condition that I could paint it and when I leave, I’d restore it to exactly what it was,” Courtney Love wrote in a post on xoJane.com.

“Since I darkened the door she [the owner] has been vicious to me and my staff.

“Having a landlady tell you your Prelle, $2,000-a-yard fabric…is <<destructive>> is totally weird.”

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas were not the only stars at the gig as heavyweight names Tom Hanks, Bette Midler, and Michael J. Fox were among the other celebrities in attendance.

The event was the E Street Band’s debut concert at the venue, and it was sponsored by SiriusXM.

The night marked the 10-year anniversary of satellite radio and the show also raised funds for WhyHunger, a New York City anti-poverty group.

It was also the first public performance by the band without late saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who died in June 2011.

After beating throat cancer, last year, Michael Douglas has started to make his way back to work.

Earlier this month it was announced that Michael Douglas had agreed to appear in an FBI commercial against financial crime.

He warns that Wall Street was fiction but that the problem of insider trading is real and cannot be allowed to continue.

AA flight attendant caused panic after ranting about 9/11 out of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport

0

An American Airlines flight attendant disrupted a flight Friday morning as it was about to take off from Dallas-Fort Worth en route to Chicago, saying over the aircraft intercom system that the plane was going to crash, alluding to 9/11 terrorist attacks and ranting exorcism and about the airline’s bankruptcy.

A cell phone video showing for the first time the flight attendant who caused panic aboard AA flight has emerged today.

The video obtained by NBC Chicago shows a middle-aged woman with reddish-brown hair in uniform convulsing and obviously distressed, yelling at co-workers trying to subdue her to “get out of my way!”.

Passengers were alarmed at her violent, erratic behavior.

“Everyone started freaking out,” passenger Bethany Christakos said.

“She spoke in and out of Spanish,” passenger Carolyn Kazmi told NBC Chicago.

“She talked about the flight crashing, that we were going to go back to the gate.”

Other passengers said that the woman made frequent comments about her medication, and expressed their relief that they weren’t in the air.

Customer Brad LeClear made the call to 911 and then helped assist the flight crew in trying to subdue the woman.

“She claimed when we were holding her, I tried to talk her down and calm her down a little bit,” he told the station.

“She said she was bipolar.”

Flight 2332 was halted after the woman commandeered the plane’s public address system and told passengers there were technical difficulties.

First class travelers helped the cabin crew subdue the attendant, after she started screaming random things like she was “not responsible for crashing this plane” and that they couldn’t take off because there wasn’t enough ice on board, according to witnesses.

The Chicago-bound flight had already departed the gate at Dallas-Fort Worth airport and was just about to take off at about 8:25 a.m., the Dallas Observer reported.

Another attendant tried to calm worried passengers as the woman continued to ramble about America Airlines’ bankruptcy and “rant” about 9/11, said a law enforcement source.

She also reportedly complained about union issues. It took at least five people to restrain the woman.

One passenger said she had to be “thrown into the first row of seats and held down” and sounded “demonic”.

“It was unbelievable”, passenger Bethany Christakos told the Dallas Observer, adding the out-of-control attendant was “screaming bloody murder”.

The woman shrieked as she was handcuffed by police and placed into a police car about 15 minutes after the “altercation” first started.

“She was just screaming – blood-curdling screams,” said Bethany Christakos.

“I will never get that sound of her screaming out of my head.”

Passenger Greg Lozano said: “We were pretty frightened. I was glad we weren’t in the air.”

The plane was turned around and taxied back to the gate, where state trooper escorted two stewardesses off the aircraft.

One of the women was seen fighting police and “kicking and screaming” as she was put in a patrol car.

Both women were later treated in a nearby hospital.

Passengers claimed they heard the attendant, whose name was being withheld, was “off her meds” and suffered from bipolar.

In a statement, American Airlines said the entire crew was replaced and the flight eventually took off for Chicago at 9:46 a.m.

The rest of the journey went smoothly thanks to liberal quantities of alcohol, said Bethany Christakos.

“The attendants were nicer than I ever seen,” she said.

“They completely ran out of alcohol.”

“We commend our other crew members for their assistance in quickly getting the aircraft back to the gate so that customers could be re-accommodated,” American Airlines said.

“Our customers were not in danger at any time. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers and we appreciate their patience and understanding.”

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said there was “an altercation on board the plane and that’s why it returned to the gate and police were called.”

Challenger shuttle explosion: rare amateur video offers a closer and more intimate view of the tragedy

An amateur video of the space shuttle Challenger explosion shortly after liftoff has surfaced over 25 years after the tragic event when seven astronauts lost their lives.

The rare film of the 1986 Challenger explosion was taken by Jeffrey Ault of Orange City, Florida.

It is perhaps the only amateur recording of the event on film and it has been made available exclusively to The Huffington Post.

The newly released video offers a closer and more intimate view of the tragedy than have other video reports previously released by the news media.

Jeffrey Ault was part of a live audience gathered to watch the Challenger take off from the Kennedy Space Center, less than 10 miles from the launch site. He shot the video on his Super 8 home video camera, and it sat for 26 years in a box in his house.

“I was hoping to see an event that I would remember for the rest of my life,” Jeffrey Ault told the Huffington Post in an email.

“I did. Just not the way I would have liked to. Unfortunately, it became one of those long lasting memories for all the wrong reasons.”

An amateur video of the space shuttle Challenger explosion shortly after liftoff has surfaced over 25 years after the tragic event

The initial explosion happens at around the 1:20 mark in the video. And it’s clear the spectators don’t grasp what is happening right away, with one person in the background whispering: “Oh, that’s beautiful,” as the shuttle’s contrails split in two and begin descending back toward the ground below.

Shortly after the explosion, former NASA public affairs officer Steve Nesbitt can be overheard announcing from the Mission Control Center: “Flight control is here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction.”

And finally, at the 2:50 mark, Steve Nesbitt can be heard announcing that the Challenger has exploded. The video ends shortly after that.

The Challenger accident brought all U.S. shuttle flights to a halt and ignited a debate at the time about whether the shuttle program should even continue.

Bild abolishes “Page 1 Girl” after 28 years of tradition

German tabloid Bild has decided to end the tradition of publishing pictures of naked women on its front page after 28 years.

Bild, the Germany’s biggest circulation tabloid, has published more than 5,000 pictures of naked women on page one since 1984.

Under a headline “Bild abolishes Page 1 Girl”, Friday’s final subject, Eva from Poland, says: “I am the last”.

The decision to abandon the tradition was taken at an editorial meeting on Thursday – International Women’s Day.

The paper said: “It is perhaps a small step for women but a big step for Bild and for men.”

Bild reprinted a cutting from 13 May 1970 which carried the headline: “Women have less in the head than men”.

It said on Friday: “This old headline is now completely embarrassing for us”.

German tabloid Bild has decided to end the tradition of publishing pictures of naked women on its front page after 28 years

Although pictures of nude women will continue inside the paper, there does appear to be a change of image, perhaps in the light of falling circulation.

There was a real debate in Germany over the role of women, as they make up a far smaller proportion of the boards of companies than in either Britain or the United States.

The loudness of that debate and the presence of a female leader of government may be a sign of changing attitudes – attitudes that Bild has picked up on.

On Thursday, Bild gave all female employees the day off to mark International Women’s Day and said the decision on the nudes was taken by the men.

According to industry figures, Bild outsold Britain’s The Sun in 2009 but has fallen back since and is now neck-and-neck in the latest estimates.

The World Association of Newspapers says both are behind six other newspapers, mostly in Japan.

Italian cargo ship Gelso M ran aground off Sicily

The Italian coast guards have rescued the crew of a cargo ship after it ran aground on a reef off Sicily in stormy seas.

All 19 crew members were ferried to shore by helicopters after the captain of the Gelso M gave the order to abandon ship.

Weather conditions are deteriorating in the area near the city of Syracuse on Sicily’s south-east coast.

There were no reports of any cargo aboard the Italian-flagged vessel.

Coastguard spokesman Cosimo Nicastro said four helicopters had been used to airlift the crew to safety, and all of them were well.

Helicopters were needed for the evacuation because the ship’s position on the reefs had made it impossible for the crew to lower lifeboats or for rescue vessels to approach.

The ship’s double hull meant there was a low risk of pollution but the environment ministry was alerted nonetheless, AFP news agency reports.

Rescue service sources quoted by the agency suggested that, given the weather conditions, the captain had been sailing too close to the coast.

The incident comes two months after the cruise ship Costa Concordia hot rocks off the island of Giglio on Italy’s west coast, capsizing with the loss of 32 lives.

Japanese YouTube Ferrari driver arrested

A Japanese doctor has landed himself in trouble with the police after posting footage of his drive in a Ferrari sports car on YouTube.

The doctor is facing charges of exceeding the speed limit after the footage showed him driving at 124km/h (77mph) in a 40km/h (25mph) zone, police say.

The 50-year-old doctor, from Okawa in Fukuoka Prefecture, was reported to police by angry YouTube users.

He reportedly said he “wanted people to understand the beauty of a Ferrari”.

The six-minute video is titled “Ferrari 458 Italia Drive in Japan 2011” in Japanese, and was filmed using a camera positioned behind the driver.

It shows the car leaving an underground car park and driving along highways and coastal roads in Fukuoka, southern Japan, on the morning of 24 April 2011.

At least 84 people marked dislike under the YouTube posting, compared with 19 likes.

Police said they were tipped off about the video in May and began investigating, the The Mainichi Daily News reports.

According to the newspaper, the police determined the speed of the car based on the distance covered and the time elapsed.

A police spokesman told the AFP news agency that the driver was identified from the footage, and he could face a six month jail sentence or a fine of up to $1,220 if convicted.

New anti-Putin protests in Moscow and other Russian cities

New protests are taking place in Moscow and other Russian cities following Vladimir Putin’s victory in last weekend’s presidential election.

Almost 20,000 people lined one of central Moscow’s main avenues.

However, this was much lower than the turnouts that followed December’s parliamentary election, which the opposition said was rigged.

Similar allegations have surrounded the presidential vote, which saw Vladimir Putin secure a third term.

Foreign states have accepted Vladimir Putin’s election but observers said the poll had been skewed in his favor.

Some opposition leaders had played down expectations of a huge turn-out on Saturday, partly because their movement had failed to stop Vladimir Putin securing another term.

The Moscow protest took place on Novy Arbat, a vast avenue lined by 1960’s skyscrapers.

Dozens of police and military vehicles were stationed on nearby streets.

The city authorities had allowed a rally of up to 50,000 people.

However, the figure appeared much lower than this. The opposition said 25,000 people had attended. Agence France-Presse quoted police as putting the figure closer to 10,000.

The Moscow protest took place on Novy Arbat, a vast avenue lined by 1960’s skyscrapers
The Moscow protest took place on Novy Arbat, a vast avenue lined by 1960’s skyscrapers

On a cold but sunny Moscow day, demonstrators waved banners and wore white ribbons – the symbol of the protest movement.

Protest organizer Vladimir Ryzhkov told the crowd: “These authorities are illegitimate. The same people are in power, the same people who took away our right to choose, the same people who destroyed freedom of speech and political competition.

“We will continue to demand deep political reforms and new elections.”

Sergei Udaltsov, one of the protest organizers, called for a million-strong march to take place in Moscow in May, a week before Vladimir Putin’s inauguration.

Another opposition leader, former chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, told the crowd: “This was not an election. This was a special operation from a thug who wanted to return to the Kremlin.”

Sergei Udaltsov was among about a dozen protesters who were later arrested by police, AFP news agency said.

It added that police detained a number of people at an unauthorized rally on Saturday in St Petersburg.

Last Monday, a day after the election, police arrested about 250 protesters in Moscow and another 300 in St. Petersburg.

Vladimir Putin was re-elected for six years, having served two previous terms as president between 2000 and 2008.

On Friday, US President Barack Obama called Vladimir Putin from Air Force One “to congratulate him on his recent victory”, a White House statement said.

Barack Obama said he looked forward to hosting Vladimir Putin at the G8 Summit in May at Camp David.

Bobbi Kristina Brown is romantically involved with Nick Gordon, the 22-year-old man who Whitney Houston raised like he was her own son, HollywoodLife.com reported.

Earlier reports claimed that Bobbi Kristina Brown doesn’t want to leave her home in Atlanta, Georgia to live with her grandmother Cissy Houston in New Jersey.

Two eyewitnesses told HollywoodLife.com that they witnessed the 19-year-old girl lip kissing her unofficial adopted brother, Nick Gordon, who lives with her in Whitney Houston‘s former townhouse in Atlanta.

The sources also said that Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon weren’t holding back their PDA during a shopping trip to Target in the community of Johns Creek, Georgia, near their gated community on March 9.

“Bobbi and Nick were in the music section and then all over the store,” the sources told HollywoodLife.com.

“Bobbi was kissing him on the mouth and holding hands. They were laughing and smiling and seemed SO happy.”

The eyewitnesses added: “She was wearing a black short pencil bandage skirt with a black top and black knee high boots. Her hair and makeup were all done too, like she was going to go out on the town. He was in all black – black jeans, black shirt, earrings and a black wide-brimmed hat.”

Even though Bobbi Kristina Brown and Nicholas Gordon wandered all around the store, they didn’t have a cart or anything with them and left in a silver SUV, the same one that’s usually seen outside their townhouse.

Earlier reports claimed that Bobbi Kristina was with Nick Gordon in Target, since he tweeted a photo of the two of them together later that afternoon in the same outfits our eyewitnesses saw and described.

Their close relationship has been going on for several months, and Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon’s tweets back and forth to each other prove it.

“Happy Birthday @REALbkBrown I love you,” Nick Gordon wrote to Bobbi Kristina on her birthday, March 4.

Nick Gordon was also protective of Bobbi Kristina, saying: “Thank you guys for all the birthday wishes for @REALbkBrown #NBL” and calling her his “baby sis” on December 11.

Meanwhile, Bobbi Kristina Brown tweeted a photo over the holidays with the caption: “Mom, @ndgordon (: & I on the way to the airport friday ! (:#NYCBABYYYYY<3 home home home.”

On November 24, Bobbi Kristina wrote: “I love sleeping with big brudder (: only person that helps my insomnia B!! Hah (: #teamfamilia!”

The same day, Bobbi Kristina suggestively tweeted: “Mmm @ndgordon An I.. Mmm can you say early risers ?(:”

In September 2011, Bobbi Kristina called Nick Gordon her “other half,” writing: “Home relaxing with othrhalf @ndgordon &maximus(: yaay. Sleep soon ! So tired, long week! #AlwaysHavingGOD in your heart « eternalblessings

Clearly, Bobbi Kristina Brown and Nick Gordon have been in a deep relationship for quite some time – well before Whitney Houston’s tragic death last month.

There have been reports that members of Bobbi Kristina’s extended family – especially her grandma, Cissy Houston – doesn’t approve of Nick Gordon and wants him to move out of Whitney’s house and Bobbi Kristina’s life, even though he has lived there and has known her for 10 years.

Judging from the tweets and photos, Whitney Houston knew about this relationship and didn’t put a stop to it, letting Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon live under the same roof. Also, Nick Gordon wasn’t officially adopted by Whitney Houston. The singer just reportedly took him in as her own son and supported him. In fact, when Whitney Houston’s friends referred to her death, they reportedly said they were concerned about “her children,” meaning she considered Nick Gordon her son.

Ray J is still hurting over Whitney Houston’s death

Whitney Houston’s former on-off boyfriend Ray J says that he is “still hurting” over the singer’s death last month.

Speaking at a Brotherhood Crusade/Mothers in Action press conference on Friday, Ray J said: “It’s just such a tough time for me. I’ve been through a lot in these past few weeks.”

“I’m able to look at life in a whole different way. I always look at my phone because I got a picture of somebody I really love and it helps me through the day.”

Ray J donated several items to the charity, including school supplies and clothes, according to Us Weekly.

“I love giving back to kids and helping my community,” he said.

“I’ve been part of the Brother Crusade and working with them since I was 16 years old, so this is nothing new for me to come out and give back.

“I’m here to spend time with them, laugh with them and make sure they have everything the need to move on in a positive way with their education in life.”

Ray J continued to talk about his emotional state.

“I’m really emotional right now and I really don’t know what to say,” he said.

“But I will say I love and hurt. I enjoy being around people that support me and give me a sense of peace. That’s what these kids mean to me and what the Brotherhood Crusade does for me.

“The most important thing of all is that God is talking to me. God is talking to me right now, and now is the time to listen. My ears are open.”

Whitney Houston estate: the singer had $29,000 in her bank account and debts of more than $4 million

Whitney Houston had just $29,000 in her bank account at the moment of her death, while having debts of more than $4 million.

Whitney Houston’s financial situation was previously disclosed during her divorce from Bobby Brown in 2007, and it showed how the singer had managed to blow many of the millions she had earned during her career.

But while Whitney Houston, who sold more than 170 million albums, had blown vast swathes of her fortune, she still managed to leave assets worth around $6 million to her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown.

The information has emerged from an income and expense declaration filed by Whitney Houston, and according to RadarOnline the documents also revealed that she had a life insurance policy worth only $300,000.

Whitney Houston stated she had $40,000 in cash, $225,000 in stocks and earned in excess of $1 million for performances.

But it was her real estate situation that truly underlined how she was in a financially precarious situation.

Whitney Houston’s assets included one property in New Jersey which was worth $6.5 million, but she also owed $3.247 million on the estate.

In addition, Whitney Houston owned a townhouse in Atlanta, Georgia, where daughter Bobbi Kristina now lives, which was worth $1.244 million.

However, the property was far from paid off, as she owed $1,046,603 on the home.

Whitney Houston’s other assets included the life insurance policy, which was worth $312,000 and $1.8 million dollars in jewelry and art.

Amazingly her retirement account was worth only $226, however her recording contract is listed as confidential, as it was considered separate property due to a prenuptial agreement Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown had.

The singer’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, is Whitney Houston’s sole heir, and the pop idol left everything to her.

With a total of $10,242,931 in various assets, and debts totaling $4,294,014, in theory it leaves her with an inheritance of $5,948,917.

Costa Concordia disaster could wipe out Carnival profits in 2012

Carnival has announced that the sinking of the Costa Concordia cruise ship could wipe out its profits in 2012.

Carnival says Costa Concordia disaster could reduce the company’s profits by as much as 82% this year after more than 30 people are believed to have died in the accident.

In the quarter to 29 February, it lost $139 million compared to a $152 million profit in the same period last year.

Carnival’s problems were exacerbated when another Costa Cruises ship, Costa Allegra, had to be towed ashore last month.

Costa Cruises is a subsidiary of Carnival and runs 14 of the company’s total fleet of 101 ships. Other brands include Carnival, Cunard, Holland America, Princess and Seabourn.

The company said that bookings improved as media coverage of the disaster declined.

It said that booking volumes for the Costa line are running “significantly behind” the same period last year.

CeBIT 2012: vision of future at the ICT industry’s most important event held in Hannover

CeBIT 2012 visitors have been treated to very latest digital trends, industry news and inspired innovations at the tradeshow’s home base in Hannover, Germany, between March 6 and March 10.

Robots everywhere, driverless cars, new eco-solutions, screens that “read” feelings, and smart museums and stadiums – just some of the “City of the Future” technologies at this years’ CeBIT trade fair.

Many of the devices on show sound like the stuff of science-fiction. But even if most are not yet ready for release, their developers are at least able to show off working prototypes.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology is at the event holding live demonstrations of a system that creates a connection between cars and traffic lights.

The system is designed to eliminate accidents by forcing cars to slow down when they approach a traffic light that is about to change to red.

The institute’s Oliver Sawade said that the technology could be used on the road within five years.

“Your car will be able to come to your place once you call it, without a driver,” he added.

“And when you arrive at your destination it will be able to go to the garage by itself.”

Metres away the German Robotics Innovation Centre is showing off a vehicle that can shrink to squeeze into tight parking spaces.

The EO Smart Connecting Car also saves space by avoiding the need for an engine in a bonnet or boot. Instead its engineers have put small engines in each of its four wheels.

The vehicle can also be folded or connected to other similar cars to create a “train”. The centre’s Timo Birnschein said that the innovation would allow those taking part to share and save energy.

“With newly developed technologies, vehicles can be mechanically and electrically docked together in order to transfer data and electric power from one vehicle to the next,” he said.

“It is thus possible to steer several vehicles at a time and to drive in the slipstream. This way, traffic jams can be reduced and large quantities of energy can be saved.”

A range of robots are also strutting – or in some cases grinding – their stuff at CeBIT 2012.

Britain’s Engineered Arts’ singing “Robothespian” attracted attention for its rendition of Singing in the Rain and Star Wars impersonations.

The android is being marketed as an educational guide. Its developers now plan to link up the machines’ brains via the cloud so they can share information between each other.

The Karlsruhe Institute’s Armar robot offered a vision of the future in which domestic droids carry out chores. The machine’s grip is sensitive enough to allow it to take milk and cartons of juice out of a fridge, and it can learn how to clean or empty a dishwasher by watching its owner.

Germany’s Tobit Software’s engineers are obviously thinking along very different lines. Their booth is decked out as a club with one of its creations acting as DJ while two others pole-dance to the beats.

Visitors with a robo-fetish can pick up one of the dancers for about 30,000 Euros ($39,500).

The IT2Green project offers a more sober – and perhaps more useful – take on technology.

It is designed to transfer data from company and government servers to employees’ computers overnight. This then frees up capacity to carry out more sophisticated operations in the day.

The innovation has already secured state funds. The Fraunhofer Institute’s Dr Phil Lutz Stobbe said care had been taken to ensure the transfers were secure to avoid data exposure.

“We expect these projects to work within the next two years.” he said.

Another technology demonstrated by the institute is able to “read” faces.

A computer’s camera films people’s expressions and then uses algorithms to work out the age, sex and even what mood they are in.

The software – known as Shore – can cope with any background, changes in lighting conditions and other objects that appear in its sightline.

After eight years of development one of its creators said it could also distinguish one person from another.

“Even if someone leaves the camera’s field of vision they can still be recognized,” said Tobias Ruf.

“The Shore software has a short term memory that lets them be recalled when they reappear in its view.”

Stem cells could remove the need for a lifetime anti-rejection treatment in kidney transplant patients

Stem cells given alongside a kidney transplant could remove the need for a lifetime anti-rejection treatment with immune-suppressing drugs, say scientists.

Early tests of stem cells injection alongside a kidney transplant at US hospitals were successful in a small number of patients.

According to the journal Science Translational Medicine, the majority no longer need anti-rejection medication.

Researchers said it could have a “major impact” on transplant science.

One of the key problems associated with organ transplantation is the risk that the body will “recognize” the new organ as a foreign invader and attack it.

To prevent this, patients take powerful drugs to suppress their immune systems, and will have to do this for life.

The drugs come at a price, preventing organ rejection but increasing the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and serious infection.

Stem cells given alongside a kidney transplant could remove the need for a lifetime anti-rejection treatment with immune-suppressing drugs

The study, carried out at the University of Louisville and the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, involved eight patients.

Their transplant came from a live donor, who also underwent a procedure to draw stem cells, the building blocks of their immune system, from the blood.

The transplant recipient’s body was prepared using radiotherapy and chemotherapy to suppress their own immune system.

Then the transplant went ahead, with the stem cells put into their body a couple of days later.

The idea is that these will help generate a modified immune system that no longer attacks the organ or its new owner.

Although the patients started off with the same anti-rejection drugs, the aim was to reduce these slowly, hopefully withdrawing them completely over time.

Five out of the eight patients involved in the trial managed to do this within a year.

One of those is 47-year-old Lindsay Porter, from Chicago.

Lindsay Porter said: “I hear about the challenges recipients have to face with their medications and it is significant.

“It’s almost surreal when I think about it because I feel so healthy and normal.”

Dr. Joseph Leventhal, associate professor of surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said: “The preliminary results from this ongoing study are exciting and may have a major impact on organ transplantation in the future.”

He said that, as well as kidney patients, the technique might improve the lives of those receiving other organs.

While stem cells from organ donors have been used before, this is the first time it has been used for “mismatched” transplants, in which donors and recipients do not have to be related and immunologically similar.

Madeleine McCann disappearance: Portuguese police set up a new team of detectives to review the case

A new team of detectives has been set up by the Portuguese police to review the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

An outside squad of officers has been brought in to re-examine the case of Madeleine McCann almost four years after the police probe was formally archived.

The new team, from the northern city of Porto, has been instructed to go over the thousands of pages of case files and search for new clues.

The development will provide fresh hope for parents Gerry and Kate McCann, who have never given up on finding their daughter alive.

They have repeatedly called on the Portuguese authorities to resume the search for their daughter.

The case review is being carried out by Policia Judiciaria’s Regional Section of Criminal Investigation and Prevention in Porto, led by Helena Monteiro.

Madeleine McCann was nearly four when she went missing from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3, 2007 as her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby.

Portuguese detectives, helped by officers from Leicestershire Police, carried out a massive investigation into her disappearance. The official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008.

The family’s Portuguese lawyer Rogerio Alves described the Portuguese police case review as a “very positive sign”.

Rogerio Alves said: “More than anything Kate and Gerry want to discover what happened to their daughter, whilst of course harboring the hope of finding her alive.

“For that to happen, the police need to carry on looking for her and carrying on following the leads at their disposal.”

A new team of detectives has been set up by the Portuguese police to review the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
A new team of detectives has been set up by the Portuguese police to review the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Rogerio Alves also said he believed the review could lead to an eventual reopening of the case.

The lawyer told a Portuguese TV station: “It’s not absolutely certain but what’s happening at the moment is that some of the information passed to the authorities could lead to a reopening of the case.

“Obviously within this enormous universe of people who say they’ve seen one thing or another or have information on one thing or another, the police make a selection.

“I can’t go into any sort of detail and I hope people will understand me, but at this moment in time there is something that aroused enough interest from the Portuguese and British police to warrant this review in search of new clues.

“This is all I can say but obviously the most plausible explanation for what’s happening is this one, that information passed to or acquired by the Judicial Police in Porto has put them on the trail of something specific.

“I don’t have detailed information and as you’d expect they’re always going to be cautious in releasing information.”

Detectives from Porto are understood to have travelled to the Algarve as part of the review.

The Policia Judiciaria’s deputy national director Pedro do Carmo told newspaper Jornal de Noticias they wanted detectives who had no previous involvement with the case to take a fresh look at the investigation.

Pedro do Carmo said: “Despite having been formally archived, we continue to have an unexplained disappearance. The archiving does not mean that the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) have less interest in establishing what happened or looking for answers.

“The British authorities have set up a team to review the investigation. They have been to Portugal and agreed to collaborate with the PJ. We are doing the same.

“The Porto team is experienced in these cases.”

Pedro do Carmo stressed that the case had not been reopened and still officially remains archived.

A spokeswoman for the PJ said today: “The leadership of the PJ wants to have another look at the case and to work with the British authorities and they have chosen an experienced team from Porto to do this.

“In Portugal only the attorney general’s office can order the reopening of a case and it would only do that if there was strong new evidence. At the moment that has not happened.”

The Scotland Yard review, called Operation Grange, involves 30 murder squad detectives, some of whom have made at least four trips to Portugal and Spain.

In December 2011 they travelled to Barcelona to meet with private investigators from the agency Metodo 3, who were hired by the McCanns to find their daughter.

Madeleine McCann’s parents, both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, have previously welcomed Scotland Yard’s involvement in the case.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry obviously welcome the work being done by the PJ in Oporto alongside that of the Met investigative team.

“They clearly hope that it will lead to the case being reopened in due course.

“There is good co-operation between the Met and the PJ, and Kate and Gerry remain grateful for the time and resources that have been put into the search for Madeleine.

“They will not be discussing any details whilst both the Met investigative review and the PJ work is continuing, but clearly it is a positive development.”

Italy demands UK clarifications around the failed bid to rescue Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara in Nigeria

Giulio Terzi, the Italian foreign minister, has asked British government to provide the “utmost clarity” around the failed bid to rescue Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara, who were kidnapped and killed in Nigeria.

The Italian foreign minister has demanded details “in the next few hours”, an Italian news agency said, after accusations the UK did not inform Italy about the planned mission.

Islamist militants took British Chris McManus, 28, of Oldham, and Italian Franco Lamolinara, 48, hostage in north-west Nigeria last May.

The engineers died as Nigerian and UK forces tried to free them on Thursday.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and Giulio Terzi are attending a meeting in Denmark.

William Hague earlier said that the limited time available to make a decision “constrained how much we were able to consult others”.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said it was “inexplicable” that the British government had not told Rome about the rescue attempt until it had begun.

Giorgio Napolitano said the UK needed to explain why it did not inform the Italian authorities ahead of the operation.

“The way the British government has behaved is quite inexplicable. To have failed to inform or consult Italy, with regard to a military action which could have such consequences,” the Italian president said.

“A clarification is needed on both the political and diplomatic levels.”

UK Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said Rome had been told of intelligence behind the rescue attempt and informed “as the decision was taken to act”.

Philip Hammond said that the attempted rescue had been launched after information was received that Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara “were about to be moved – possibly executed”.

He said what had subsequently happened was “very unfortunate but it’s completely explicable”.

“These hostages were taken, they were held at an unknown location for a very long period of time despite extensive efforts to track them down. And when a window of opportunity became available, a well-trained Nigerian force with British support, went in and tried to rescue them,” Philip Hammond said.

“The Italian government was kept informed throughout the operation as the intelligence emerged and then as the decision was taken to act… I don’t think they specifically approved it – they were informed of what was happening.”

Number 10 said earlier that no official complaint had been received from the Italian government, and the UK had not made an apology.

It said the UK and Italy had been in contact ever since the men were kidnapped on 12 May, 2011.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman said: “We contacted the Italians yesterday as the operation was getting under way, but this was a very fast-moving situation.

“Our priority was to respond to the situation on the ground and to do everything we could to try and secure the safe release of the hostages.”

In a statement announcing the operation and the deaths of Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara, PM David Cameron earlier said the decision to act had been taken at very short notice.

“A window of opportunity arose to try and secure their release. We also had reason to believe that their lives were under imminent and growing danger.”

It appeared that the Italian government tended to be in favor of negotiating in hostage situations, while Britain was absolutely against formal government negotiations.

News of the operation broke in a statement from the office of Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

It used very similar language to that used by the British side but made it clear the Italians were told the military was being used only after the operation had started.

Mario Monti chaired a meeting of a government security committee to discuss the failure of the attempt to rescue the hostages. The meeting ended after two hours without any comment being issued.

Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee chairman Richard Ottaway said the UK was not duty-bound to tell Italy about the operation in the circumstances.

Richard Ottaway said: “I can understand the concerns and frustrations of Italian politicians but I think they’ve got to accept and recognize that these are very fast-moving, delicate operations and it’s not always possible to keep politicians briefed in advance of what goes on.”

Mario Monti’s office said he had asked Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to provide a “detailed reconstruction” of events as soon as possible.

David Cameron’s spokesman said it was a Nigerian-led operation, with UK support involving the UK’s elite Special Boat Service (SBS).

The house where the kidnapped men were being held had been under surveillance for some time.

David Cameron and Goodluck Jonathan said they believed the kidnappers had killed Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara.

But an unnamed official from the Nigerian state security service quoted in local reports said the hostages died in the crossfire.

The Nigerian president described it as a “deeply sad and regrettable incident”.

Goodluck Jonathan said that the men’s captors had been seized and “would be made to face the full wrath of the law”.

The Nigerian president said they were from militant Islamist group Boko Haram, which has carried out a number of attacks on police, politicians and clerics who oppose it.

Reports have emerged that a senior member of Boko Haram was captured on Tuesday, and he gave information which led forces to the house where the two construction engineers were being held.

However, on Friday, a spokesman for the group told reporters Boko Haram was not responsible for the deaths.

“We have never taken anyone hostage. We always claim responsibility for our acts,” he said.

Boko Haram has become more violent and capable in recent years and there is a suspicion this may be a sign of the growing influence of the group al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has a track record of kidnapping Westerners in North Africa and trying to extract ransom payments to fund its violence.

British Chief of Defence Staff General Sir David Richards said that the rescue attempt had sent “a shockwave” through al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

“We know that all their leaders are now and disarray and we’re now obviously trying to track them down with our Nigerian allies,” David Richards said.

Gunmen seized Chris McManus and Franco Lamolinara in the town of Birnin Kebbi in the north of Nigeria on 12 May 2011.

Both men worked for Italian firm B Stabilini in the construction of a local headquarters for the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Relatives of Chris McManus released a statement saying they were “devastated” by his death but thanked those who had worked to try to free him.

“During this ordeal we have relied heavily on the support of our family and friends which has never waned and has enabled us to get through the most difficult of times,” the family statement said.

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to some areas of Nigeria and against all but essential travel to other areas, but these do not include the area where the men were kidnapped.

It says there is the threat of kidnap and terrorism across the West African country.
