Renee Zellweger shows off her super slim frame as she leaves a West Hollywood hotel

Renee Zellweger showed off her rail-thin frame as she left the Sunset Marquis hotel in West Hollywood yesterday.

Renee Zellweger sported a brown checked dress which cinched in at her tiny frame and appeared too big for her.

Her very slender pins were also visible in the short utilitarian frock and the Bridget Jones star made her legs look even longer and slimmer by donning a pair of nude platform peep toe pumps.

Renee Zellweger wore her honey blonde locks piled atop her head in a ballerina bun and toted a crocodile skin handbag.

Despite her gaunt appearance she seemed in good spirits and flashed a smile to photographers before stepping into her red Mini and speeding off.

The actress will soon be preparing to reprise her role as Bridget Jones in a third installation of the comedy saga.

But it is believed that the star will be sporting a fat suit instead of piling on the pounds once again for the film.

She famously gained two stone for the first and second films before dieting back to her usual slim self.

Her co-star Hugh Grant revealed earlier this year that though production has been held up yet again, fans can expect to see yet another love triangle between his character, Daniel Cleaver, Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy.

He told MTV back in April: “I’ve seen some scripts. They haven’t quite hit the nail yet, but they will. They’re working on it.”

Of the love triangle, he said: “Our public demands some more fisticuffs!”

The third film was first announced in August of last year.

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig was originally in talks to helm the film, though the Full Monty’s Peter Cattaneo is now slated to direct.

Glenn Beck will launch “anti-Glee” show as America’s favorite musical program has no values

Glenn Beck announces he has plans to take on Glee, America’s favorite musical program, with a singing and dancing television show of his own.

Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C. Friday, former Fox News firebrand Glenn Beck said he was mesmerized by Glee‘s production quality, but was devastated that the program promoted “no values”.

He said that his show will champion Christian values and appeal to everyone, even liberals.

During the conference, Glenn Beck said he and his wife were shocked by the subjects discussed on Glee.

“It’s horrifying some of the things that they’re teaching high schoolers,” the radio host said.

“But it’s brilliantly done. It’s produced, brilliantly. Its music, brilliant. Its acting, brilliant. Its cinematography, brilliant. All of it!”

The problem, however, is that viewers prefer “high school kids dancing in lingerie” more than “shows that talk about God, faith, and family”.

“Everybody is sleeping with everybody else. There’s no values. It’s all self-gratification. It’s a nightmare,” he said of the Fox hit.

The self-hating Gleek says he’s been working with artists and musicians to “push back” against shows that display teens having casual sex, cursing, and other things he deems debaucherous.

“Why are we just giving the culture over to those who seek to promote filth? Why are we just complaining about it? How about we do something about it,” he said in a statement last week.

The show will be hosted on GBTV, Glenn Beck’s HD video network.

“We are working with a rapper – I can’t say who yet – but my audience and his audience will say, <<What?>>” Glenn Beck said to Buzzfeed.

“We jokingly call this our Oedipus project because the left will be making out with me… and they’ll have no idea.”

UFO-shaped object found sitting on the bottom of the Baltic Sea still a mystery

The Swedish expedition team that found an unidentified object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea has surfaced with more questions than answers – and certainly no solution to its origins.

The divers found that the object, which some have likened to the Millennium Falcon because of its unusual round outline, was raised about 10 to 13ft above the seabed and curved in at the sides, giving it a mushroom shape.

They added that the object has “rounded sides and rugged edges”.

“First we thought this was only stone, but this is something else,” diver Peter Lindberg said in a press release.

At the center of the object, which has a 60-meter diameter, has an “egg shaped hole leading into it from the top”.

Surrounding the hole, they found a strange, unexplained rock formation. Adding fuel to the speculative fire, they said that the rocks looked “like small fireplaces” and the “stones were covered in something resembling soot”.

“Since no volcanic activity has ever been reported in the Baltic Sea the find becomes even stranger,” Peter Lindberg continued.

The Swedish expedition team that found an unidentified object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea has surfaced with more questions than answers and certainly no solution to its origins

A brief video clip of the dive was released to Swedish-language paper Expressen and can be viewed on Gizmodo.

“As laymen we can only speculate how this is made by nature, but this is the strangest thing I have ever experienced as a professional diver.”

The soot also proved cause for concern for Peter Lindberg’s colleague on the Ocean X explorer team, Stefan Hogeborn.

“During my 20-year diving career, including 6,000 dives, I have never seen anything like this. Normally stones don’t burn,” Stefan Hogeborn said in the release.

“I can’t explain what we saw, and I went down there to answer questions, but I came up with even more questions.”

Another find that they saw in person for the first time was the 985-foot trail that they described “as a runway or a downhill path that is flattened at the seabed with the object at the end of it”.

The object was first found this month last year, but because of a lack of funding and bad timing, they have were not able to pull a team together to see for themselves – just the strange, metallic outline, and a similar disk-shaped object about 200 metres away.

As it was before the recent dive, the story behind the object is anyone’s guess.

“We’ve heard lots of different kinds of explanations, from George Lucas’s spaceship – the Millennium Falcon – to <<it’s some kind of plug to the inner world>>, like it should be hell down there or something,” Peter Lindberg said.

Speaking to Fox News, he said: “We don’t know whether it is a natural phenomenon, or an object. We saw it on sonar when we were searching for a wreck from World War I. This circular object just turned up on the monitor.”

While the Ocean Explorer team is understandably excited about their potentially earth-shattering find, others are slightly more skeptical and are questioning the accuracy of the sonar technology.

In the past, such technology has confused foreign objects with unusual- but natural- rock formations.

Part of the trouble they face, however, is that they have no way of telling what is inside the supposed cylinder- whether it is filled with gold and riches or simply aged sediment particles.

They’re hoping for the former, and history seems to be in their favor.

The Baltic Sea is a treasure trove for shipwreck hunters, as an estimated 100,000 objects are thought to line the cold sea’s floor.

The company has created a submarine that they hope will appeal to tourists and wannabe shipwreck hunters who will pay to take a trip down to the bottom of the Baltic Sea to see for themselves.

Olympics 2012: IOC inquiry into olympic tickets sales on the black market claims

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has begun an investigation into claims Olympics representatives were willing to sell thousands of tickets for the London Games on the black market.

The IOC’s ruling executive board met after fresh claims by the Sunday Times involving more than 50 countries.

This included allegations that tickets for top events were available for up to 10 times their face value.

The IOC has referred the allegations to its independent ethics commission.

The Sunday Times submitted a dossier of evidence detailing claims that Olympic officials and agents had been caught selling thousands of tickets on the black market for up to 10 times their face value.

The IOC could also review how Olympic tickets are distributed among member countries – more than one million were distributed to those taking part in the Games.

The Sunday Times alleges, during a two-month investigation in which reporters posed as Middle Eastern ticket touts, it found corruption involving people representing 54 separate countries.

More than one million London 2012 tickets were distributed abroad among all the nations taking part in the Games, but the IOC has strict rules to try to combat touts.

National Olympic committees must ensure that their allocation is only sold within their own region.

Last month a senior Ukrainian Olympic official resigned after being filmed by the BBC offering tickets for cash.

The IOC said in a statement: “The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has moved quickly to deal with allegations that some National Olympic Committees (NOC) and Authorized Ticket Resellers (ATR) have broken rules relating to the sale of Olympic tickets.

“The IOC takes these allegations very seriously and has immediately taken the first steps to investigate.

“Should any irregularities be proven, the organization will deal with those involved in an appropriate manner.

“The NOCs are autonomous organizations, but if any of the cases are confirmed the IOC will not hesitate to impose the strongest sanctions.

“The IOC has also determined that it will take on board any recommendations coming out of the inquiry to improve the way that tickets are allocated and sold internationally in the future.”

London 2012 organizing committee LOCOG said it would support the IOC in its investigation “in any way we can”.

“Rules and regulations for selling London 2012 tickets to international fans are clear and unambiguous,” it said.

No tickets intended for the British market were involved, it added.

Greeks vote in crucial elections for the country’s future in the eurozone

The polls have opened this morning in Greece for crucial elections which could determine the country’s future in the eurozone.

The main contenders, the right-wing New Democracy and left-wing Syriza, are at odds over whether broadly to stick with the tough EU bailout deal, or reject it and boost social spending.

Opinion polls are banned for two weeks before voting but unofficial polls say the result is too close to call.

EU leaders say if Greece rejects the bailout, it may have to leave the euro.

The poll, the second in six weeks, was called after a vote on 6 May proved inconclusive.

Sunday’s vote is being watched around the world, amid fears that a Greek exit from the euro could spread contagion to other eurozone members and send turmoil throughout the global economy.

Tough austerity measures were attached to the two international bailouts awarded to Greece, an initial package worth 110 billion Euros ($138 billion) in 2010, then a follow-up last year worth 130 billion Euros.

Many Greeks are unhappy with the conditions attached to deals which have been keeping Greece from bankruptcy and all but one of the parties standing for election have promised some degree of renegotiation of the terms.

The polls have opened this morning in Greece for crucial elections which could determine the country's future in the eurozone

In remarks quoted by the Reuters news agency a few hours before polls opened, the head of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Angel Gurria suggested that the next Greek government should be given a chance to revisit the bailout conditions.

“If that is the condition presented for Greece to stay [in the eurozone] and then move on, I would say it is probably something that should be attempted,” he was quoted as saying.

But Germany, which has the eurozone’s most powerful economy, insists Greece, like other member states which have received international bailouts, must abide by the austerity conditions.

On the eve of the vote, Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “It is extremely important that tomorrow’s Greek elections lead to a result in which those who form the government say, ‘Yes, we want to keep to our commitments.'”

Like Angel Gurria, the German chancellor and several other European leaders will be attending the G20 summit in the Mexican resort of Los Cabos on Monday, which is set to be dominated by the eurozone crisis and the aftermath of the election.

The head of New Democracy, Antonis Samaras, told supporters on Friday that he would lead the country out of the financial crisis, while staying in the eurozone.

He broadly accepts Greece’s international bailout, but says he will renegotiate the terms of the agreement to seek a better deal for Greeks.

“We will exit the crisis; we will not exit the euro. We will not let anyone take us out of Europe,” Antonis Samaras said.

The youthful head of Syriza, Alexis Tsipras, rejects the bailout, but wants Greece to stay in the eurozone, saying a bailout is possible without the kind of drastic cuts demanded of Greece.

“Brussels expect us, we are coming on Monday to negotiate over people’s rights, to cancel the bailout,” he told a final rally on Thursday.

Greeks were celebrating hours before the polls opened, after their national football team qualified for the quarter finals of Euro 2012 with a surprise 1-0 win over Russia.

“We are proud that we gave the people back home some joy and a break from their problems – even for a short while,” striker Georgios Samaras said.

The Kathimerini website noted that Greeks had few reasons to feel national pride at the moment, but sport had provided them with plenty of it. The victory could lead to a quarter-final tie against Germany.

Drake to be arrested at his concert tonight over brawl with Chris Brown

NYPD plans to arrest rapper Drake for reckless endangerment after he and his love-rival Chris Brown allegedly sparked a nightclub brawl early Thursday that put five people in the hospital.

NYPD sources leaked that if Drake doesn’t agree to turn himself in voluntarily by early next week, he can expect to be arrested at his Jones Beach concert tonight.

The details about the possible showdown between the 25-year-old Canadian rapper and New York’s finest comes as a second bystander released photos of her injuries that were a result of the flying bottles at SoHo club W.i.P.

A woman named Veronica told TMZ that she was sitting at a table near the two rappers when she saw the beginning of the brawl.

Veronica had to get stitches on her right hand and has a bruise in the middle of her forehead.

“I heard people screaming … so I tried to get away from the action and hid behind a couch,” she told the site.

NYPD plans to arrest rapper Drake for reckless endangerment after he and his love-rival Chris Brown allegedly sparked a nightclub brawl early Thursday that put five people in the hospital

What she didn’t know at the time was that the fight, which left the club looking like a war zone with broken bottles everywhere, was supposedly caused by notorious rapper Chris Brown sending Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, a bottle of champagne.

While the gesture may seem nice, the closest connection that the two men have is that they have both been romantically linked to Rihanna.

That appears to be too close for comfort, as Drake reportedly sent the bottle back to Chris Brown with a note reading: “I’m f****** the love of your life, deal with it.”

Though Chris Brown, who was famously plead guilty to the felony charge of assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, was enraged by the note, he claims that he was not the one to start the fight and points the finger at Drake and his entourage instead.

Police seem to agree, as the New York Post reported that while they are considering Chris Brown a “witness and victim”, they are now on the hunt for Drake.

“I believe the police are building a case against Drake and his thugs,” Chris Brown’s lawyer Mark Geragos told the paper.

Said “thugs” included fellow rapper Meek Mill and a bevy of security handlers.

Another serious question comes for Chris Brown, however, as some of his own posse may have been known gang members, which would be a violation of his probation agreement for his previous assault charge.

An unidentified source told the New York Post that a number of members of the notorious Crips gang might have been with the 23-year-old rapper when the fight happened around 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

While the specific Crips members have not been identified, two other Chris Brown pals have announced their injuries.

Bride sings ballad to her groom as walking down the aisle

0

A bride thought belting out a cheesy love ballad as she walked down the aisle was a better way to describe her feelings.

In a video capturing what could be America’s most cringe-worthy nuptials, the doors of a small, nearly empty, church fling open to reveal the mystery bride standing alone in a glittery dress, clutching a large microphone.

Within a few seconds, the bride launches into song, as her groom stands awkwardly at the alter.

The bittersweet tune, which she presumably wrote herself, describes her fatherless childhood and how she’s finally found her “right man”.

“I’m all made up today with a veil upon my face but no father stands beside me to give this bride away,” she bellows.

Then she launches into the ballad’s cheesy chorus.

“Well, I’m standing in the chapel, wearing my white dress. I have waited for this moment with tears of happiness. Here I leave behind my past by taking a chance.”

The bride thought belting out a cheesy love ballad as she walked down the aisle was a better way to describe her feelings
The bride thought belting out a cheesy love ballad as she walked down the aisle was a better way to describe her feelings

After a dramatic pause, the woman then adds: “I finally found the right man.”

The footage was uploaded on YouTube by Petite Productions, a wedding videography company in Cincinnati, Ohio.

But the company gave few details about where the wedding took place or who the mystery wailer is.

The bride takes a few steps down the aisle in between each verse, while the groom waits uncomfortably at the alter.

Finally, he starts walking towards his wife-to-be and, when they meet, takes her hand.

She turns side on and gets emotional, singing again about her missing father.

“My emotions overload because there is no hand to hold,” she belts out before breathily speaking the words to her lover: “Here I go” and launching into the chorus again.

At one point, the bride, clearly considering herself an impressive songstress, gets so carried away with the vocal gymnastics she crouches down, to ensure she hits the right notes.

The couple then finish their walk down the aisle as the bride sings the last, touching line of her heart-felt ballad.

“One day our little girl will reach out her hand and she’ll know I’ve found the right man.”

Lindsay Lohan back to work after being found unconscious in her hotel room in Marina del Rey

Lindsay Lohan was back to work last night, hours after being found non-responsive in her room in Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey.

Lindsay Lohan, 25, took to Twitter, telling fans she had worked 85 hours in four days.

The actress was on a night shoot at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center in Hollywood last night, where she was again in character as Elizabeth Taylor.

She tweeted: “Note to self.. After working 85hours in 4days, and being up all night shooting, be very aware that you might pass out from exhaustion & 7 paramedics MIGHT show up @ your door.”

Lindsay Lohan went on: “Hopefully theyre cute. Otherwise it would be a real let down. XL @mrsalperez -back on set,’ in reference to costume designer Salvador Perez.”

The actress was not taken to hospital, as was initially reported, but was checked out of her hotel room at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey, according to TMZ.

Paramedics were called to the hotel at 10:15 a.m., according to ABC News.

According to TMZ, medical officers arrived at the scene after Lindsay Lohan called the Liz & Dick production team this morning and complained about feeling unwell.

A private doctor was then called and before the doctor arrived at the premises they asked the hotel to check on the actress.

When a member of hotel staff knocked on her door and she did not rouse, 911 was called by a member of the Liz & Dick production team.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, they reportedly determined that the star was “ok”.

Apparently Lindsay Lohan has been filming for two days in a row with very little sleep and decided to stay at the hotel in order to get some much-needed rest.

Her representative, Steve Honig, told E! News yesterday: “Lindsay has been working a grueling schedule for the last couple of days.

“Last night she worked from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. She was exhausted and went back to her room to sleep.

“Producers were apparently concerned and called the fire department and paramedics found her sleeping but determined that she was fine, just extremely exhausted and slightly dehydrated.

“She is on her way home now to rest and will be back on set later today.”

He added that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Meanwhile Lindsay’s mother Dina Lohan has spoken out about the ordeal and said that she is glad that her daughter is OK.

She told X17online: “Lindsay’s ok. She worked until 6:15 a.m. and wrapped, then went home to sleep. She’s working so hard and just wants it to be perfect.”

Lindsay Lohan has previously battled problems with drugs and alcohol, but in March was finally taken of probation for a number of offenses stemming back to a 2007 arrest for DUI.

She is now making her comeback with Liz & Dick – in which she plays Elizabeth Taylor – and has also been cast in movie The Canyons.

On Tuesday Lindsay Lohan was spotted filming scenes for Liz & Dick on a balcony at the hotel.

Trooping the Colour ceremony for Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday

Prince Philip appeared to be in good spirits as he attended the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who has resumed official duties after recovering from a bladder infection, attended the parade in London with the Queen.

Thousands of people watched the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge ride to the ceremony at Horse Guards Parade.

The military event came as the Queen’s Birthday Honours list was published.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip rode in a glass coach down the Mall to the ceremony. They were due to travel in Queen Victoria’s 1842 ivory-mounted phaeton carriage but this was changed due to the “unpredictable nature of the weather”, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

The coach, built in 1881, was first used by the Queen and Duke on their wedding day when they travelled from Westminster Abbey to the palace on 20 November 1947.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is Colonel of the Irish Guards and the Prince of Wales, who is Colonel of the Welsh Guards, were joined on horseback by the Princess Royal, Colonel of the Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Kent, Colonel of the Scots Guards.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cornwall travelled in a horse drawn carriage.

The parade was Prince Charles’ first public appearance since being awarded the highest rank in all three military services by the Queen.

The prince becomes a Field Marshal, Admiral of the Fleet and Marshal of the Royal Air Force. His appointment to the honorary five-star ranks recognizes his support for the Queen as Commander-in-Chief.

Also honored in the Birthday Honours list are actor and director Kenneth Branagh who has been knighted, ex-Olympic minister Tessa Jowell is made a Dame while Take That singer Gary Barlow is made an OBE.

Soul singer Omar receives an MBE for services to music, under his full name Omar Lye Fook, and Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet becomes a CBE.

Thousands of people, including friends and family of those taking part, watched the precision marching by hundreds of Guardsmen.

Queen Elizabeth II, wearing her Brigade of Guards brooch, took the royal salute as senior members of the royal family looked on.

After the parade, thousands of well-wishers swarmed down the Mall to get into position in front of Buckingham Palace to see the royal family gather on the balcony for the flypast.

The Colour being paraded on Horse Guards this year is the flag of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards.

More than 1,600 officers and soldiers took part in the display.

More than 240 horses were be on parade, with 290 musicians who marched and played as one.

The traditional display of pomp and pageantry originated from traditional preparations of battle.

Colours, or flags, were carried or “trooped” down the rank so that it could be seen and recognized by the soldiers.

In the 18th century, guards from the royal palaces assembled daily on Horse Guards to “troop the colors”, and in 1748 it was announced that the parade would also mark the Queen’s official birthday.

The Queen’s actual birthday was on 21 April, when she turned 86.

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II, who has recently celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, has attended Trooping the Colour every year except in 1955, when it was cancelled because of the national rail strike.

Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia dies outside the kingdom

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, who was in his late 70s, has died “outside the kingdom”, the royal court has said.

Prince Nayef, who was also deputy prime minister and interior minister, had left the country for a holiday and medical tests late last month.

On 3 June, the deputy interior minister said the prince, who was 77 or 78, was in good health and would return “soon”.

He was named crown prince in October 2011 after the death of the previous crown prince, Sultan bin Abdul Aziz.

The succession in Saudi Arabia still passes among the sons of former King Abdul Aziz bin Saud, who established the modern kingdom during his reign from 1932 to 1953. So far, five brothers have become kings and about 20 are still alive.

King Abdullah, who is 88 years old, had a back operation last year.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, who was in his late 70s, has died "outside the kingdom",

Next in line is expected to be Prince Nayef’s 76-year-old brother, Prince Salman, who was appointed defense minister in November after spending five decades as governor of Riyadh.

The new crown prince must be approved by the Allegiance Council, a 34-strong assembly of King Abdul Aziz’s sons and some of his grandchildren.

A statement from King Abdullah published by the official SPA news agency, said Prince Nayef had died on Saturday “outside the kingdom” and would be buried on Sunday after Maghreb (sunset) prayers in Mecca.

Unconfirmed reports said Prince Nayef had been receiving medical treatment since May at a hospital in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Saudi Arabia is expected to declare its own period of mourning following Prince Nayef’s burial.

The prince was a member of the influential group known in Saudi Arabia as the “Sudairi Seven”, which was made up of the sons born to King Abdul Aziz and his favorite wife, Hassa bint Ahmed al-Sudairi.

The kingdom’s interior minister since 1975, he led the crackdown on al-Qaeda’s offshoot in the country after 11 September 2001.

Personally committed to maintaining Saudi Arabia’s conservative traditions based on the Wahhabi doctrine of Islam, he was seen to be more conservative than King Abdullah.

But in 2001, Prince Nayef supported a move to issue women with their own identity cards, a decision which gave women more freedom in many financial and legal transactions.

He adopted a more stern tone to the Arab Spring, denying claims that it could move to Saudi Arabia.

Club-winged Manakin, the only bird known to sing with its wings. Secret decoded.

Club-winged Manakin, the only bird known to sing with its wings, contains some secrets of its performance in its bones, researchers have found.

The club-winged Manakin, which lives in the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, performs a mate-attracting song by rubbing its wings together.

A Cornell University team from the US scanned its bones.

They found unlike most birds, it has dense, solid wing bones that help it to emit a violin-like sound.

Lead researcher Kim Bostwick, curator of birds and mammals at the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates, and her colleagues carried out CT scans of Manakin wings.

These revealed that, while most birds have hollow wing bones, the club-winged Manakin’s are “bulky and solid”.

“Birds tend not to want to carry around a lot of extra weight,” said Dr. Kim Bostwick.

“[So the fact] that the club-winged Manakin is carrying around such enlarged, solid and densely mineralized bones, must mean they have some great contribution to sound production.”

During a courtship display, male club-winged Manakins (Machaeropterus deliciosus) knock their wings above their backs to create sound.

Dr. Kim Bostwick thinks that having ridged, vibrating feathers attached to a solid, stiff mass is the best way to make sure the vibrations are emitted from the feather as sound, rather than being absorbed into the bone.

Dr. Kim Bostwick was the first to decode the mechanism behind the Manakin's unique sound, revealing a new kind of birdsong
Dr. Kim Bostwick was the first to decode the mechanism behind the Manakin's unique sound, revealing a new kind of birdsong

Dr. Kim Bostwick was the first to decode the mechanism behind the Manakin’s unique sound – revealing a new kind of birdsong.

She began travelling to South America to study and film the birds in 1997, as a graduate student of Yale University ornithologist Richard Prum.

But the bird’s wing movements were so fast that the footage she obtained then yielded no clues.

It was only when Dr. Kim Bostwick returned to Ecuador with a portable high-speed camera, which recorded images 30 times faster than previous attempts, that the exact movements of the wings became clear.

Her footage, along with analysis of the diminutive bird’s anatomy, showed that Manakins knock their wings together more than 100 times per second in order to sing.

When the wings meet, a specialized feather, with a stiff tip bent at a 45 degree angle, rubs against another feather that has seven separate ridges. This mechanism produces a mating call.

Similar performances are well known in the insect world, but nothing the same has been recorded in vertebrates before.

Charles Darwin was fascinated by club winged Manakins and wrote in 1871 about the remarkable diversity of the sounds made by these birds and their importance for “sexual purposes”.

The evolution of their “violin wings” is an example of sexual selection, a term used to describe how the mating preferences of females can impact on male characteristics.

Dr. Kim Bostwick said the fact that it existed revealed that female Manakins have a preference for the males that make this “fascinating sound”.

Exactly why females were initially attracted to it is less clear. Dr. Kim Bostwick’s next step is to find out more about “the evolutionary story of how the strange features we see in the club-winged Manakin came to be”.

She has already discovered some clues about how the club-winged Manakin “derived” from the ancestors it shares with “normal-winged” birds.

“Some of [its] closest relatives <<share>>, in an evolutionary sense, behaviors, sounds, and even some anatomical precursors of the crazy traits we see in the club-wings,” she explained.

But a century and a half after Darwin was dazzled by it, the club-winged Manakin apparently still has a lot to teach us about evolution.

Euro 2012: UEFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Croatia for Racist Chanting During the Italy Game

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation following racist chanting during the Italy game.

It was investigating reports a banana was thrown on to the pitch during the Group C match with Italy on Thursday.

A photographer reportedly saw a steward retrieving a banana and heard monkey chants directed at Mario Balotelli.

The disciplinary proceedings are outlined for “racist chants, racist symbols” in the crowd.

“UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation for the setting-off and throwing of fireworks, and the improper conduct of supporters (racist chants, racist symbols) at the UEFA Euro 2012 Group C match against Italy in Poznan on Thursday,” it said in a statement.

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on Tuesday, 19 June.

FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) announced on Friday that their observers heard between 300 and 500 Croatia fans chanting monkey noises, which prompted Uefa to investigate the matter.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has condemned the “deviant” fans who had shamed their country but urged UEFA to spare them further sanctions.

In a statement it said: “The Croatian Football Federation distances itself from all deviant behaviour of the part of the fans during the final tournament of UEFA Euro 2012 and strongly condemns it.

“The HNS, its national team players and members of the technical staff support all UEFA activities aimed at identifying individuals whose behaviour damages the reputation of the competition, no matter which country they come from.

“The HNS appeals to UEFA not to punish the Croatian national team, which is for a number of years at the top of world football because of its performances and behaviour, both on and off the field of play, and not to associate it with the part of the fans who actually are not supporters, but hooligans which should be isolated from all sports events.”

Croatia were fined $25,000 by FIFA just under four years ago after England striker Emile Heskey was subjected to monkey chants in a World Cup qualifier in Zagreb.

They were also given a small fine during Euro 2008 for racist abuse from their fans during their game against Turkey.

Alleged racist chanting in the Spain-Italy and Russia-Czech Republic games are already subject to investigations.

A Spanish fans’ group has said some of its country’s supporters abused striker Mario Balotelli in their game with Italy, while Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie told reporters he “noticed” racist chants directed at him.

Mario Balotelli, who started the 1-1 draw against Croatia, said before Euro 2012 that he would “not accept racism at all” and would walk off the pitch if racially abused by fans.

Netherlands players said they heard racist chanting during a pre-tournament open training session in Krakow.

Robin Gibb and Claire Yang pictured together as a couple in 2004

First picture of tragic Bee Gee Robin Gibb with his housekeeper Claire Yang, who had his love-child, Snow Robin, has emerged to media.

A Robin Gibb’s family friend, who was at his funeral, said the story of the singer’s relationship with Claire Yang: “Snow and her mother Claire weren’t at the funeral. They were the elephant in the room.

“Everyone talked about Robin and his children but carefully made no mention of Snow. Then Barry just went ahead and did it. He just came out with it quietly and naturally.

“When Barry said the child’s name, it was as if a bullet went right through the church. We couldn’t quite believe our ears.”

On the day of singer’s funeral, Snow Robin Gibb was 25 miles away in a smart detached house in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, with her mother Claire Yang. Now three, Snow Robin is an enchanting young girl, with pale brown hair and chocolate eyes.

Neighbors often hear her playing and laughing in the garden. Claire Yang, who had been the Gibbs’ housekeeper, refused to say why she chose not to attend the funeral with Snow, acknowledged as Robin Gibb’s daughter.

It appears that she was influenced by stories suggesting Robin Gibb’s widow Dwina would “hate” it if she turned up.

So what is the truth about Claire Yang, now 37, and her romance with Robin Gibb? And what will she do now that he has sadly passed away?

News of Robin Gibb and Claire Yang liaison emerged only in February 2009, three months after Snow Robin was born at the private Portland Hospital in West London. But they are thought to have been involved romantically for some years before that.

The picture of Robin Gibb and Claire Yang, side-by-side in the lobby of the exclusive five-star Westin Bellevue Hotel in Dresden, is the first photograph to emerge of them as a couple. It was taken by a fan in September 2004 when the star was in the middle of a German concert tour.

Robin Gibb’s comment after Snow Robin’s birth was charmingly enigmatic: “New life is heaven sent and a blessing. That’s what I can say about children and life.”

To the surprise of many, Robin and Dwina Gibb remained married, and Claire Yang moved out to a rented property nearby. In the early weeks he was a regular visitor. Robin Gibb explained towards the end of 2009 that his having had a mistress and a baby outside the marriage had been irrelevant to his family life with Dwina.

The picture of Robin Gibb and Claire Yang, side-by-side in the lobby of the exclusive five-star Westin Bellevue Hotel in Dresden in September 2004, is the first photograph to emerge of them as a couple.

“Our relationship is rock-solid and that’s the most important thing to me,” the singer said.

Friends of the Gibbs say that this must have been intensely painful for Claire Yang to hear, because she had been desperately in love with her employer for years. Indeed, according to one friend who spoke on the condition of anonymity, she had actually hoped that Robin Gibb would eventually leave Dwina for her.

Born in Braintree, Essex, in 1975, Claire Yang is the daughter of Dick, a computer systems engineer, and Evelyn, a one-time bank clerk. And although she was a baby herself when the band found fame, she is also, significantly, a big Bee Gees fan.

Robin Gibb’s friend says: “She was a fan who was taken on as paid staff. And from there, of course, it was a dream come true to have a relationship with Robin.”

Claire Yang, who started out as a housekeeper, worked both at the couple’s 12th-century mansion in Thame and at their waterfront spread in Miami, Florida. Records show that she lived in Miami for a time.

The friend says: “She was absolutely and desperately in love with Robin. The word I would use is obsessively in love. My view is she probably thought she would run off into the sunset with him, but that was never going to happen. Dwina would never give him up, and they loved each other.”

Claire Yang started working for Robin Gibb in 2001, and it has been claimed there was a romance from the early days, although it only became obvious rather later.

Certainly, by 2004, when the picture was taken, she was already travelling abroad with her employer, and for some years she continued to join him at corporate engagements or concerts.

Dwina Gibb, it appears, was well used to his flings. They had married in 1985 and, as a bisexual former Druid priestess, she was far from a conventional person.

Robin Gibb once revealed they had an “open marriage” and she confirmed: “We have an open relationship. Robin has had flings with friends of mine and he talks to me about them.”

Yet this was not just a fling. The friend says: “When he travelled in those years, Claire would come out and look after him completely, she was devoted to his every need. It would not have gone as far as it did if it was some kind of a casual fling.

“They were all living very closely in gated grounds. Robin spent quite a bit of time with her and things developed. There was a relationship, a full relationship, and I guess that they were happy together. I think that Dwina didn’t mind too much until there was a baby, too. That was the step too far.”

Dwina Gibb, 59, is said to have asked Claire Yang to leave after learning that she was pregnant by her husband. But she didn’t go far, renting a house only five miles away. In the early days, Robin Gibb paid for the rent on the houses she lived in, and for a nanny and a car, too.

One of the great showbusiness eccentrics, with his lavender glasses and obvious wigs, Robin Gibb was the kind of person who did business on the basis of a handshake, and it seems that this applied to his relationship with Claire Yang, too. There does not appear to have been any formal support agreement.

But Robin Gibb’s friend confirms the romance cooled after Snow Robin was born.

He says: “Robin talked about her a lot, but that was more before she got pregnant than afterwards. I think there was a general feeling that once the baby had arrived it was to be the start of a new chapter for everyone, including Claire.

“That’s not to say he didn’t think of her. I remember in 2010 he was in Australia and he got a big toy koala for Snow. For quite a long time he was absolutely seeing the child.

“It wasn’t mentioned to Dwina. I know that he used to talk to Barry about Snow and Claire. Barry was probably one of the few people he could talk to. From what I heard, Claire was unhappy. The one thing she never wanted to lose was Robin and when the baby arrived, she did lose him. She was isolated. It is quite sad.”

This much is confirmed by an old neighbor, who lived next to the house which she rented for a year when Snow Robin was very young.

The neighbor said: “I never once saw anyone other than her or the baby coming or going from that house. I never saw Robin Gibb. She really kept to herself.”

When Robin Gibb’s health failed last year, Claire Yang seems to naturally have wanted to formalize their arrangement. With the end of their romance, it must have occurred to her that it would be wise to secure her daughter’s future.

It was reported that around spring of last year, when Robin Gibb was diagnosed with liver cancer, it was decided that Claire Yang would need an official settlement for Snow Robin. And it was the process of settling a lump sum which seems to have resulted in a final schism between them.

Robin Gibb had given his word that Snow Robin would be treated equally, just like his other children.

He had promised to provide for her – but it was settling the details of how this should be done which caused trouble.

Robin Gibb’s long-standing friend said: “It became impossible for them. It then became really difficult between him and Claire. In the end, when his health was bad, he found it intolerable. It was just a mess.”

One problem was working out what Robin Gibb, who died aged 62, was actually worth – his fortune is estimated at £140 million ($225 million).

The process of formally totting up his assets was complicated and lengthy and tempers frayed.

“It was the process which took its toll,” the friend says.

“Dwina found it distressing when Robin was ill and Robin found it all too much as well.”

It took a full year to hammer out a deal – at a time when Robin Gibb was very frail. He suffered an inflamed colon and pneumonia over the winter of last year, and yet still the fight between their respective sets of lawyers dragged on.

In the end, Claire Yang is understood to have accepted a relatively small sum, £4 million ($6.5 million), for the future education and maintenance of their daughter.

In April this year, she bought a house in Amersham, Bucks, for around £800,000 ($1.25 million). Four weeks later, Robin Gibb died. Peter Jones, who sold her the property, said: “She was quite elusive. It wasn’t a completely normal sale. I think I only met her once.”

Now there is a fear in the family that things might get complicated if there isn’t provision in Robin Gibb’s will for her and Snow.

Robin Gibb’s friend says: “There was apparently an agreement, but not everything was settled.”

Dwina Gibb, in particular, fears that Claire Yang might come back into her life and wants nothing to do with any of it.

She let it be known that she didn’t want to see Claire Yang at the funeral, but some of Robin Gibb’s friends feel that this might have been a mistake, as Claire is understood to feel upset at having been excluded.

Could Claire Yang have any legal recourse? Robin Gibb’s lawyer, Michael Eaton, declines to comment on any details of Gibb and his bequests. However, under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 in UK, any child is allowed to contest a will – or have it contested on their behalf – if they are excluded or if it is unfair.

Robin Gibb’s children from his first marriage – Spencer, 40, and Melissa, 37 – are thought to be included in it as, of course, is Robin John, 29, his beloved son by Dwina.

Did Rihanna meet up Chris Brown following his fight with Drake in W.i.P. nightclub?

Rihanna, who is thought to have been the reason for the fight between Chris Brown, rapper Drake and their entourages at New York’s W.i.P. nightclub, reportedly meet up with Chris the night after the fracas.

Sources say Rihanna, who has dated both musicians, was on hand to look after Chris Brown’ cut chin, which was a result of the incident.

An insider told RadarOnline.com: “Chris and Rihanna hung out at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club all night and it was clear that she loved the attention he was giving her.

“Those two have a thing for each other that will never die, no matter what, and they’re on their way to really being back together.

“Chris just adores her. And she tended to him, making sure the gash on his chin from the fight was okay.”

Rihanna, who is thought to have been the reason for the fight between Chris Brown, rapper Drake and their entourages at New York's W.i.P. nightclub, reportedly meet up with Chris the night after the fracas

According to the insider, Rihanna and Chris Brown shared a private room, where she was “all over” the R&B singer.

“Chris would do anything for Rihanna, and she loves the way he showers her with attention,” the source added.

“It’s a win-win for them.”

Rihanna originally left Chris Brown in 2009 after he assaulted her, leaving her badly bruised.

It was shortly after that time she hooked up with Drake, which started the feud between him and Chris Brown.

Rihanna has also took to Twitter yesterday to call for peace, somewhat cryptically writing: “When Jah gives you a desire for something, He will give u peace along with it… Wait for peace (sic).”

After admitting that she was feeling “drunk” on her Twitter page, Rihanna hid her face under a hoodie as she left Jay-Z’s 40/40 club Thursday night, where she was reported to be partying with Chris Brown.

Although she looked rather serious as she left the club, guided by a friend, Rihanna did admit she had had a fun night.

The singer wrote on Twitter: “Is it just me or is twitter way too complicated when you’re drunk? *still drunk*”

Rihanna insisted that she had been partying with a group of friends, but did not mention Chris Brown’s name in her earlier post.

“Fun times w/ Neyo, Mo, V, Trey, Maxwell, Selita, Terrence, CP3, A Mandler and ofcourse my hoes.”

While waiting with her friends at the valet, Rihanna flashed a hint of her black bra under a cut-up T-shirt and light blue jeans with a grey pair of steel-toed combat boots bearing a smiley face.

With her black hair curled and up, the singer finished her evening look with long yellow nails and a metal collar.

The night before a massive fight broke out between Chris Brown and Drake, said to be over the singer, whilst they were partying at New York night club W.i.P.

The fracas between Chris Brown and Drake’s entourages happened just before 4 a.m. in the morning, as the last song was playing.

Kim Kardashian opens up about her short marriage to Kris Humphries on Oprah’s Next Chapter

Kim Kardashian’s short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries called into question her and her family’s thirst for publicity.

Kim Kardashian, 31, says the union led her to a life changing epiphany.

The reality TV star wed Kris Humphries in a fairytale ceremony last August, but although their union broke down within three months, she says she has been a changed person since.

Referring to her sister Kourtney in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian said: “It’s like how Kourtney had this epiphany when she had her baby and she changed into a different person, I feel like I’ve had an epiphany over the last year.

“For what I’ve been through and I am that changed person, just from my own experiences.”

Kim Kardashian is now dating rapper Kanye West, 35, and said one of the things that attracts her to him is the fact he is older than her.

She added: “I always dated five years younger. My whole thing was completely different, and now I just love that I’m with someone that’s a couple years older than me.”

During the interview, Kim Kardashian, who is of Armenian descent, says she is proud to represent Middle Eastern women in modern society.

When asked by Oprah Winfrey if she thinks the Kardashian’s reality TV show would be as successful if they weren’t pretty, she replied: “I don’t think it would have happened if we were all skinny pretty models.

“I think it has to do with us, the curves, the dark hair – I think it was a combination.

“I remember when the wave of Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek and these beautiful Hispanic women came into light, and I looked up to them and I loved them, but I was like, <<Where are Middle Eastern women?>>.

“I think we took that category or helped broaden that.”

Kim Kardashian and her family will appear alongside Oprah Winfrey this Sunday.

Earlier this week Kim Kardashian was quick to post a picture of herself alongside TV royalty in what is surely the ultimate seal of approval of their ubiquitous fame.

Clearly excited she tweeted: “Ummmm no big deal Oprah just left my mom’s house! #DreamComeTrue.”

Pregnant sister Kourtney Kardashian also tweeted: “Surreal day being interviewed by the queen Oprah. Not many words to explain how incredible the experience was except for AHHH! Major moment.”

Oprah Winfrey, 58, was apparently just as impressed with the reality TV family, whom she surprisingly said she knew very little about.

She later posted a picture of herself with the whole family as she sat down with them at “momanager” Kris Jenner’s home.

Kim Kardashian was joined by sisters Kourtney, Khloe, brother Rob, Kourtney’s partner Scott Disick, Khloe’s husband Lamar Odom, mum Kris, half-sisters Kylie, Kendall and step-father Bruce Jenner to film the interview for Oprah’s Next Chapter, airing Sunday on OWN.

It is the first appearance for Kim Kardashian and her infamous family, and Oprah Winfrey admitted that she had a lot of catching up to do, ahead of the interview.

Oprah Winfrey revealed on her Facebook page: “I had never met them, nor seen the show. I did a full on <<Kardashian Kram>> in preparation, watching major shows from every season.”

It seems that Oprah Winfrey may be a bit late catching up with the family who has become something of an institution in the US.

But she said: “I genuinely wanted to know why they have become a cultural phenomenon, why so many people love to watch their every move and why so many others love to hate them.

“Are they completely ego centered? Are they really <<famous for being famous>> or is there something more?”

Oprah’s Next Chapter airs Sunday at 8 p.m. (EST) on OWN.

Apple 1 computer, the company’s first product, fetches $375,000 at a New York auction

A rare functioning Apple 1 computer – the company’s first product – has been sold at a New York auction for $374,500.

The price was more than double Sotheby’s high estimate and sets a new record for the collector’s item.

A memo written by Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs when he worked at Atari sold for $27,500 at the same New York event.

The original estimate for the four-page handwritten note was up to $15,000.

Only about 200 Apple 1s were ever created. The computers were hand-built by Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak and originally sold for $666.66 as a fully assembled circuit board.

He later said he picked a sum with a repeating number “because it was just an easier way to type”.

Only about 50 Apple 1s are still believed to be in existence. The auctioned model is one of the very few that still works.

Sotheby’s said there was a battle between two parties for the item which also included the original manuals. A set of bids was executed by the auctioneer on behalf of an absentee collector, but a telephone bidder proved more persistent and eventually clinched the sale.

Their identity has not been revealed.

The Atari memo was written in 1974 and consists of four pages detailing the late Steve Jobs’ thoughts on how to improve its arcade football game World Cup.

Steve Jobs was 19 years old at the time. The pages include circuit drawings and diagrams showing how the paddle-based game could be made more fun to play.

The notes are stamped with Steve Jobs’ Los Altos home address and a Buddhist mantra – “gate gate paragate parasangate bodhi svahdl”.

It translates as: “Going, going, going on beyond, always going on beyond, always becoming Buddha.”

Sotheby’s said there had been “at least three bidders” for the item.

The high sums are the latest confirmation of demand for memorabilia connected to Steve Jobs, who died last October.

Apple’s founding papers, featuring Steve Jobs’ signature, sold at auction in December for close to $1.6 million.

Liu Yang, first Chinese woman astronaut, set for space launch with Shenzhou-9

China is about to launch its fourth manned space mission and is sending a crew of three, including the nation’s first female astronaut, to the orbiting Tiangong space lab.

Chinese Shenzhou-9 capsule is set to lift off from the Jiuquan spaceport on the edge of the Gobi desert at 18:37 local time (10:37 GMT).

A Long March 2F rocket will put the astronauts on a path to dock with Tiangong in a couple of days’ time.

They will then spend over a week living and working in orbit before returning to Earth.

The mission is commanded by Jing Haipeng, who is making his second spaceflight after participating in the Shenzhou-7 outing in 2008 – the mission that included China’s first spacewalk.

Jing Haipeng’s flight engineers are both first-timers.

Liu Wang, a People’s Liberation Army fighter pilot, has got his chance after spending 14 years in the China National Space Administration’s astronaut corps.

Liu Yang, on the other hand, has emerged as China’s first woman spacefarer after just two years of training.

Her role in the mission will be to run the medical experiments in orbit.

Liu Yang has emerged as China's first woman spacefarer after just two years of training
Liu Yang has emerged as China's first woman spacefarer after just two years of training

Shenzhou-9 follows on from the unmanned Shenzhou-8 venture last year that tested the technologies required to join a capsule to the Tiangong lab.

Those manoeuvres went very well and gave Chinese officials the confidence to send up humans.

When it arrives at Tiangong, the Shenzhou-9 craft is expected to make a fully automated docking, but there is a plan to try a manual docking later in the mission.

This would see the crew uncouple their vehicle from the lab, retreat to a defined distance and then command their ship to re-attach itself.

Liu Wang will take the lead in this activity.

“We’ve done many simulations,” he said during the pre-launch press conference.

“We’ve mastered the techniques and skills. China has first class technologies and astronauts, and therefore I’m confident we will fulfill the manual rendezvous.”

Tiangong is the next step in a strategy that Beijing authorities hope will lead ultimately to the construction and operation of a large, permanently manned space station.

It is merely the prototype for the modules China expects to build and join in orbit. Mastering the rendezvous and docking procedures is central to this strategy.

At about 60 tons in mass, this proposed station would be considerably smaller than the 400-tonne international platform operated by the US, Russia, Europe, Canada and Japan, but its mere presence in the sky would nonetheless represent a remarkable achievement.

Concept drawings describe a core module weighing some 20-22 tons, flanked by two slightly smaller laboratory vessels.

Officials say it would be supplied by freighters in exactly the same way that robotic cargo ships keep the International Space Station (ISS) today stocked with fuel, food, water, air, and spare parts.

China is investing billions of dollars in its space programme. It has a strong space science effort under way, with two orbiting satellites having already been launched to the Moon. A third mission is expected to put a rover on the lunar surface.

The Asian country is also deploying its own satellite-navigation system known as BeiDou, or Compass.

Before leaving Earth, Liu Yang said the Shenzhou-9 mission would generate further pride in Chinese people.

“When I was a pilot I flew in the sky; now as an astronaut, I’m going into space. It’s higher and it’s farther,” she said.

“I have a lot of tasks to fulfill, but besides these tasks I want to feel the unique environment in space and admire the views. I want to explore a beautiful Earth, a beautiful home.

“I want to record all my feelings and my work, to share with my friends, and my comrades and my future colleagues.”

Nik Wallenda Completes Niagara Falls Tightrope Walk in a Televised Stunt

Nik Wallenda, member of a celebrated family of professional daredevils, has completed a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls in a televised stunt.

Nik Wallenda braved wind and heavy spray to make the 1,800 ft (550 m) walk from the US to Canada on a 2-inch (61 mm) wire.

Thousands watched from Goat Island, where he began the crossing, suspended 150 feet (46 metres) above the falls.

It is the first such feat over Niagara Falls in over a century.

Nik Wallenda is the seventh generation of the famed Flying Wallendas.

The family has performed for more than 200 years, including the signature act that gave the group their name, where two pairs of performers walk the wire, each supporting another aerialist on a pole.

Those two aerialists, in turn, carry a pole upon which the seventh member of the troupe balances in a chair.

The family has suffered two deaths from falls while performing, including Nik Wallenda’s great-grandfather in 1978.

Nik Wallenda, 33, wore a safety harness attaching him to the wire, a precaution insisted on by ABC, the US broadcaster which sponsored the live broadcast of his walk.

Prior to the walk, he said he had not performed with a harness before, but that it would not take away from the event.

After he arrived, Nik Wallenda was asked to hand over his US passport to officially enter Canada.

The daredevil had estimated the total cost of the walk would be around $1.3 million, including creating and installing the steel wire, as well as permits and security on both sides of the border.

Legal liability had prevented ABC from funding all of Nik Wallenda’s costs and materials, so he had taken to online site IndieGoGo to raise further funds.

As of Friday afternoon, Nik Wallenda was 45% of the way towards his goal of $50,000.

Egyptians vote in the second round of their first free presidential election

Egyptians are set to vote in the second round of their first free presidential election in a two-day run-off.

Mohammed Mursi, head of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, is up against Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister.

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has promised to hand over power to the winner by 1 July at the latest.

But the build-up to the election has been marred by a Supreme Constitutional Court decision to dissolve parliament.

On Thursday, a panel of judges – appointed by Hosni Mubarak – ruled that the law governing Egypt’s first democratic elections in more than six decades was unconstitutional because party members were allowed to contest seats reserved for independents.

The Freedom and Justice Party won about 100 of its 235 seats in the People’s Assembly by running candidates for individual seats.

If parliament is dissolved swiftly by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), whoever wins this weekend’s presidential run-off could take office without the oversight of a sitting parliament, and without a permanent constitution to define his powers or duties.

A 100-member assembly appointed by parliament earlier this week to draft the new constitution may also be dissolved.

Islamist, liberals and scholars denounced the ruling as a “coup”, saying they feared the ruling generals would take back legislative power.

“This series of measures shows that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the head of the counter-revolution, is adamant to bring back the old regime and the presidential elections are merely a show,” six parties and movements said in a joint statement that also urged Mohammed Mursi to boycott the run-off.

The Supreme Constitutional Court also found a law blocking senior Mubarak-era officials from the presidency – which would have ruled out Ahmed Shafiq’s candidacy – was unconstitutional. The law was passed by parliament before the presidential election’s first round.

On Friday, the Muslim Brotherhood vowed to win the presidency despite the signs of opposition within the judiciary, which is overseeing the vote.

“Isolate the representative of the former regime through the ballot box,” said a statement referring to Ahmed Shafiq, who also served as head of the air force and minister of aviation under Hosni Mubarak.

The Brotherhood warned that the progress made since the president was forced to step down was being “wiped out and overturned”.

Egypt was facing a situation that was “even more dangerous than that in the final days of Mubarak’s rule,” the group added.

Mohammed Mursi meanwhile sought to reassure the military and its supporters within the electorate that he would work closely with the generals.

“As president, they will be in my heart and will get my attention… they will never do anything to harm the nation,” he said.

On Thursday, Mohammed Mursi warned there would be a “huge revolution against the criminals” if there was any evidence of electoral fraud.

His opponent meanwhile told a rally that the court rulings were “historic” and that the “era of political score-settling” had ended.

On Friday, Ahmed Shafiq promised to “address chaos and return stability”.

He came second in last month’s first round, in which turnout among the 52 million eligible voters was only 46%. Official results gave Mohammed Mursi 24.8% and Ahmed Shafiq 23.7%.

Polling stations are due to open on Saturday and Sunday at 08:00 and close at 19:00, but voting is likely to be extended on both days.

Final results from the Higher Presidential Election Commission (HPEC) are due by 21 June, but are expected to arrive much earlier.

Partial results from the first round were declared within 24 hours.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for the SCAF to transfer power fully to a democratically elected civilian administration as soon as possible following the announcement of the final result of the election.

“There can be no going back on the democratic transition called for by the Egyptian people,” she told reporters in Washington.

Lindsay Lohan found unresponsive in her hotel room in Marina del Rey

Trouble actress Lindsay Lohan was found “unresponsive” in her hotel room in Marina del Ray, California, earlier this morning.

Paramedics were called to the penthouse of the Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey at 10:15 a.m. local time after Lindsay Lohan couldn’t be woken by hotel staff sent to check on her.

While medics attended to the scene, there was found to be nothing wrong with the 25-year-old actress other than exhaustion, after long days filming her TV movie Liz & Dick.

Lindsay Lohan’s representative, Steve Honig, told E! News: “Lindsay has been working a grueling schedule for the last couple of days.

“Last night she worked from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. She was exhausted and went back to her room to sleep. Producers were apparently concerned and called the fire department and paramedics found her sleeping but determined that she was fine, just extremely exhausted and slightly dehydrated.

“She is on her way home now to rest and will be back on set later today.”

Steve Honig added that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Lindsay Lohan has previously battled problems with narcotics and drink, but in March was finally taken of probation for a number of offences stemming back to a 2007 arrest for DUI. She is now making her comeback with Liz & Dick – in which she plays Elizabeth Taylor – and has also been cast in movie The Canyons.

BeBe Winans releases new book “The Whitney I Knew” next month

Whitney Houston’s friend, gospel singer BeBe Winans, who performed at her funeral in February, will release The Whitney I Knew on July 31, with the tome including never-previously seen photographs of the pop superstar.

Whitney Houston, who had a history of substance abuse problems, was found dead in the bath of her Beverly Hills hotel room in February and BeBe Winans has promised to use the book to reveal “heart-breaking accounts that led to her ultimate defeat”.

It was recently confirmed that Cissy Houston will release a book about her daughter next February.

Cissy Houston, 78, has signed a multi-million dollar deal to write with “candor, honesty and respect” about Whitney, who died as a result of accidental drowning in her bath and effects of heart disease and cocaine use on February 11.

Whitney Houston’s mother said: “When I lost my daughter Nippy [Whitney Houston’s nickname], the world lost one of the most beautiful voices and an extraordinarily beautiful and charitable woman.

“In sharing our story in this book, I hope to give her fans something to treasure, the way we all treasured Whitney. We are still receiving thousands of letters each day from her fans, and I hope reading this book will provide a deeper understanding into my daughter’s true story.”

Whitney Houston famously spiraled into drug addiction alongside her husband Bobby Brown – the father of her 19-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina – in the 90s and Cissy will talk about the issues which this caused in her book.

How did Whitney Houston’s death changed the Grammys? A Death In The Family documentary released.

When producers of Grammy Awards learned of Whitney Houston’s death less than 24 hours before the live telecast, they scrapped parts of the script, added performances and puzzled over how best to honor the Grammy-winning singer who died unexpectedly at age 48.

Host LL Cool J said that addressing the Grammy audience at the Staples Center after Whitney Houston’s death was “definitely the most challenging moment I’ve faced in my career.”

He decided to open with a prayer, and producers agreed, though none could recall another network TV event that began as such.

This and other last-minute changes made to the 54th annual Grammy Awards are chronicled in a new documentary, A Death in the Family: The Show Must Go On, which premiered this week at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The screening of the 25-minute documentary and 14-minute highlight reel of past Grammy performances was also a not-so-subtle push for Emmy votes.

“We’d love to have you consider us when you vote,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammys for the past 32 years.

“We’ve been nominated before and not won.”

He added that executives at CBS, which broadcasts the Grammys, suggested Ken Ehrlich’s team produce the documentary, which can be seen on the Grammy.com website and at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

Emmy ballots are due at the end of the month.

The documentary, though it deals with show changes made after Whitney Houston’s death, isn’t a downer.

Ken Ehrlich said that about an hour before he heard about Whitney Houston, he’d experienced a career high: Paul McCartney, who was set to close the show, asked if he might perform a Beatles medley from Abbey Road, and maybe it could include a guitar jam with the likes of Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh and Bruce Springsteen.

The number came together just before Whitney Houston’s death.

Ken Ehrlich said the magic of that Paul McCartney moment made him feel “like maybe there is a God.”

“God said, I’m going to give this to him, but I’m not going to let him get too cocky,” the veteran producer said in an interview before the screening.

After Whitney Houston died, the challenge was to “do something that was respectful to Whitney,” Ken Ehrlich said: “that set a tone that also didn’t lose the fact that there were thousands of people who were coming to this event because they had done something remarkable this year on their own, and they needed to be treated with respect as well.”

The documentary includes interviews with LL Cool J and Jennifer Hudson, who performed a heartfelt tribute to Whitney Houston. It also includes rehearsal footage and interviews with Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl, who said performing alongside Paul McCartney was unforgettable.

Bruce Springsteen joked that he had “been waiting since 1964” for the opportunity to play with the former Beatle. Dave Grohl said sharing the stage with such icons was like “looking at Mount Rushmore.”

February’s Grammy Awards drew nearly 40 million viewers, its second largest audience ever. The biggest Grammy audience – more than 43 million viewers – came in 1984, when Michael Jackson won a record eight awards for Thriller.

John the Baptist bones: Oxford scientists claim positive carbon dating tests on relics found in Bulgaria

Carbon dating tests carried out at Oxford University have provided scientific evidence to support the extraordinary claim that the bones found amid the ruins of an ancient Bulgarian monastery may be of John the Baptist.

A knucklebone has been dated to the 1st Century AD – a time when the revered Jewish prophet is believed to have lived.

Researchers were said to be “surprised” when they discovered the very early age of the remains, but admit “dating evidence alone cannot prove the bones to be of John the Baptist”.

The new dating evidence will be revealed in a TV documentary to be shown on the National Geographic channel on Sunday.

The remains – small fragments of a skull, bones from a jaw and an arm, and a tooth – were discovered two years ago embedded in an altar in the ruins of the ancient monastery, on an island in the Black Sea.

They were kept inside a reliquary – a container for holy relics – on Sveti Ivan – which translates into English as St. John – off Sozopol on Bulgaria’s southern coast.

The “key” clue to the relics” origins was a tiny sandstone box found alongside the reliquary with a Greek inscription: “God, save your servant Thomas. To St. John. June 24.” The date is believed to be John the Baptist’s birthday.

One theory is that the person referred to as Thomas had been given the task of bringing the relics to the island.

Oxford professors Thomas Higham and Christopher Ramsey attempted to radiocarbon date four of the human bones, but only one of them could be dated successfully.

Prof. Thomas Higham said: “We were surprised when the radiocarbon dating produced this very early age. We had suspected that the bones may have been more recent than this, perhaps from the third or fourth centuries.

“However, the result from the metacarpal hand bone is clearly consistent with someone who lived in the early first century AD. Whether that person is John the Baptist is a question that we cannot yet definitely answer and probably never will.”

DNA tests at the University of Copenhagen on three bones confirmed they were from the same person and probably from someone of Middle East origin – where John the Baptist came from.

They also established they were probably from a man.

Dr. Hannes Schroeder, who carried out the research, said: “Of course, this does not prove that these were the remains of John the Baptist but nor does it refute that theory.”

One theory is that the person referred to as Thomas in the inscription was given the task of bringing the relics to the island monastery.

Bulgarian researchers believe that the bones probably came to Bulgaria via Antioch, an ancient Turkish city, where the right hand of St. John was kept until the tenth century.

Many countries around the Mediterranean claim to have remains of St. John, including Turkey, Montenegro, Greece, Italy and Egypt.

According to the Bible, he was the cousin of Jesus and a revered holy man who baptized the son of God.

He is said to have foretold the coming of Christ before being beheaded on the orders of King Herod, with his head served up on a plate.

In a separate study, another Oxford researcher Dr. Georges Kazan has used historical documents to show that in the latter part of the fourth century, monks had taken relics of John the Baptist out of Jerusalem and these included portions of skull.

These relics were soon summoned to Constantinople by the Roman Emperor who built a church to house them there.

Further research by Dr. Georges Kazan suggests that the reliquary used to contain them may have resembled the sarcophagus-shaped casket discovered at Sveti Ivan.

Archaeological and written records suggest that these reliquaries were first developed and used at Constantinople by the city’s ruling elite at around the time that the relics of John the Baptist are said to have arrived there.

Dr. Georges Kazan said: “My research suggests that during the fifth or early sixth century, the monastery of Sveti Ivan may well have received a significant portion of St John the Baptist’s relics, as well as a prestige reliquary in the shape of a sarcophagus, from a member of Constantinople’s elite.

“This gift could have been to dedicate or rededicate the church and the monastery to St John, which the patron or patrons may have supported financially.”

The scientific analysis of the relics undertaken by Tom Higham and Christopher Ramsey at Oxford, and their colleagues in Copenhagen was supported by the National Geographic Society.

The documentary Head of John the Baptist, featuring the scientists’ work is due to be shown on the National Geographic Channel at 8:00 p.m. on 17 June 2012.

John the Baptist – the prophet who foretold the birth of Jesus Christ

John the Baptist was the son of Zachary, a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and Elizabeth – who was related to the Virgin Mary.

He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until about A.D. 27.

When he was 30, John began to preach on the banks of the Jordan against the evils of the times and called men to penance and baptism “for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand”.

John anticipated a messianic figure who would be greater than himself and, in the New Testament, Jesus is the one whose coming John foretold.

When Christ came to him, John baptized Him, saying: “It is I who need baptism from You.” When Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching in the Jordan valley.

Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea after John denounced his adulterous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip.

John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias, who asked for his head at the instigation of her mother.

John is presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets.
