European diplomats attacked in Israel

A delegation of European diplomats and local officials was violently ambushed by masked Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, marking an unprecedented escalation of violence against foreign envoys.

The assault took place in the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh, east of Ramallah. The delegation—which included Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats, and Catholic representatives—was visiting local farmers to show solidarity during the highly sensitive annual olive harvest.

The confrontation quickly turned physical when three vehicles pulled up and a group of masked men, armed with iron bars, aggressively charged at the diplomats.

The Assault on a French Mayor

The most severe physical violence was directed at Bernard Baudoux, the visiting left-wing mayor of the northern French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries. Baudoux recounted that as the attackers approached, he put on his official French tricolor mayoral sash in an attempt to signal his diplomatic and political status.

“That didn’t stop them,” Baudoux stated. He was repeatedly struck with metal bars and kicked before being thrown to the ground. “It’s the gratuitous nature of the violence that stuns me. They arrived completely enraged.”

The attackers also beat a Palestinian teenager, pushed an elderly woman, and used their weapons to smash the windows of a marked Belgian diplomatic vehicle before fleeing the scene.

A Calculated Campaign of Harvest Sabotage

The ambush is not an isolated flashpoint but rather the latest and most high-profile episode in what local activists characterize as a systematic, violent campaign to prevent Palestinians from harvesting olives on their own land.

The olive harvest has become increasingly lethal:

  • The Rising Death Toll: At least four people have been killed and over 100 injured since the harvest began earlier this month.
  • The Journalist Attack: The ambush occurred less than 24 hours after a separate, brutal settler attack left several Palestinians and a Washington Post photographer severely injured.
  • Institutional Apathy: Human rights groups have repeatedly accused Israeli authorities of doing little to stop or disarm violent settlers, who deploy weapons ranging from slingshots to assault rifles.

Diplomatic Fury and The Kremlin-Style Defense

The targeted attack on Western officials has triggered a profound diplomatic rift between Israel and the European Union. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot forcefully condemned the assault, directly linking the incident to Israel’s “illegal settlement policy” and pledging to aggressively push for further EU-level sanctions against violent extremist groups.

“As the occupying power, Israeli authorities must protect Palestinians, ensure the safety of diplomats and journalists, and bring those responsible to justice,” Prevot declared, demanding an end to settler impunity.

The internal response from within the Israeli establishment exposed sharp contradictions:

  • The Military Condemnation: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a formal statement condemning the ambush as a “severe act of violence” and confirmed that a joint military and police forensic investigation has been launched.
  • The Prime Minister’s Denial: Conversely, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately cast doubt on the veracity of the event. In a statement, the prime minister’s office suggested the diplomatic reports were fabricated or exaggerated as part of a “coordinated campaign to smear Israel” during the sensitive harvest season.

As the international community reacts with fury, Mayor Baudoux delivered a sobering reminder of the structural reality left behind in the West Bank. “The whole world needs to know what’s happening there,” he said. “For me, I’ll go back to my country and everything will be fine. Those who continue to suffer the most are those who are here.”
