Northern London riots for Mark Duggan’s death. Latest updates.

Mark Duggan’s forensic report. He died by a single gunshot wounding his chest.

Mark Duggan, the suspected black man whose death sparked London and nationwide riots after he was shot by police was buried on Thursday.

In the tributes made by his mourners in front of the 1,000 people congregation, Mark Duggan was described as a man who turned his life around with the help of his beloved partner; Mark Duggan loved playing computer games with his children, he enjoyed getting “dressed up to the nines in bling” to go out partying.

About 1,000 people were at Mark Duggan's funeral service

Mark Duggan was a “big kid himself”, as a cousin said. And she also claimed Mark was a “peacemaker” who resolved conflicts in the community and he had recently applied to become a fireman.

Mark Duggan’s funeral service was held at the New Testament Church of God in Wood Green, North London.

Outside the church, where those mourners who could not fit inside stood on the pavement, the air was thick with the smell of cannabis. Dark glasses were the order of the day for men, short skirts for women.

Mark Duggan, 29, was also known as “Starrish Mark”, an “elder”, or senior member, of The Star Gang, who strut the streets of Tottenham where such gangs trade in violence, intimidation and drugs.

Thursday, among the floral tributes spelling out “dad” and “son”, there was also a star-shaped wreath.

During the 90-minute funeral service Mark Duggan’s cousin, Donna Martin began an obituary by repeating his nickname “Starrish” at least three times, eliciting applause from the congregation.

Donna Martin told of his upbringing on the notorious Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham and how Mark Duggan left aged 13 to live in Manchester with an aunt. There was no mention of the fact that Mark Duggan was the nephew of notorious crime boss the late Desmond “Dessie” Noonan who boasted his gang had “more guns than the police” and whose feared family are “major players” in Manchester’s underworld.

His cousin also told how Mark Duggan had lost friends in Manchester in “unfortunate circumstances” and how, after he moved back to London, he treated his friend Kelvin “Smegz” Easton “like a little brother”.

Easton, 23, another gang member, was stabbed through the heart with a broken champagne bottle at a nightclub in East London last March in a row over drugs and a woman. Mark Duggan is said to have carried a gun afterwards for his own protection.

According to another source, Mark Duggan was planning to avenge the death, which is believed to be one of the reasons that officers from Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime within London’s black community, had Duggan under surveillance and were trailing him in unmarked cars.

Mark Duggan was a passenger in a minicab which was apparently stopped by police near Tottenham Hale Tube station on the night of August 4 when he was shot.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which is investigating the shooting, said police fired two shots. One shot killed Mark Duggan, the other lodged in the radio of another police officer. Mark Duggan’s gun, originally thought to have been a converted replica, had not been fired.

Two days after Mark Duggan was shot, the Tottenham riots erupted after his family spent five frustrating hours seeking a meeting and explanation from local police chiefs. The circumstances of Mark Duggan’s death have led to lingering tensions between family members and detectives.

Thursday policing at the funeral was low-key, but at least a dozen police riot vans and their officers were spotted on stand-by.

Ten black Mercedes limos brought Mark Duggan’s relatives and friends to the church. One of his three children arrived in a white-striped suit and a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Miss You Daddy” and a picture of his father in sunglasses.

Mark Duggan’s partner, Semone Wilson, 29, paid tribute to him as her “first real love” in a message read out by her sister Michelle Palmer-Scott.

“We faced trials and tribulations together. We had our ups and we had our downs but through it all, I loved him.”

“I don’t understand why you’re gone so soon.”

Mark Duggan’s mother Pamela Duggan, 53, said:

“In many way Semone saved Mark and that’s why he loved her dearly. She loved him unconditionally like they loved their children.”

Pastor Nims Obunge made an impassioned plea for peace in the community, which he said has seen “too much blood”:

“Let mothers not have to come and bury their children. Let fathers not have to come and weep for their children the way we weep today,’ he said, to whoops and applause. ‘We have been hurt, we have been scarred, we have been maligned, we have been stigmatised, we have been called names. Today we stand as one community but we say, <<Not any more – it shall stop>>.”

Ken Hinds, a Mark’s friend, who was a steward at the funeral and is chairman of the Stop and Search Monitoring Group for Haringey, said about the police’s version of Mark Duggan’s death so far:

“It doesn’t fit in with everything that’s known on the street.

“It’s caused significant damage. It has further fuelled the tension in the community and contributed to the uprising that we experienced.”

Mark Duggan was buried at Wood Green Cemetery before a reception at Broadwater Farm Community Centre.

“With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show.”

This will be Eddie Murphy’s first hosting stint on the Oscars.

Eddie Murphy earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for his role in “Dreamgirls.”

Previously, there were rumors that Billy Crystal, who hosted the awards show eight times between 1990 and 2004, was to be in the running for hosting duties before Eddie Murphy was officially tapped to host.

Eddie Murphy began his career at the age of 15 as a stand-up comedian.  In 1980, at the age of 19, he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” becoming the show’s youngest cast member to that point, and bringing to life many of the show’s most memorable  characters. His 1983 album “Eddie Murphy: Comedian” won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording.  It included portions of his groundbreaking HBO special “Eddie Murphy Delirious.”  In 1987, “Eddie Murphy Raw” was theatrically released and went on to gross over $50 million. Murphy made his feature film debut in 1982 with the classic “48 Hrs.” and would go on to star in such box-office hits as “Beverly Hills Cop” and the “The Nutty Professor” and “Shrek” franchises. All told, movies in which he has performed have earned in excess of $7 billion worldwide during their theatrical releases.

The 84th edition of the Annual Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live on the ABC Television Network.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Ordering Zelboraf
Zelboraf (vemurafenib) Tablets – Ordering

Find out more about ordering Zelboraf

Roche’s new drug Zelboraf (also known as PLX4032 and vemurafenib) was approved by the FDA on August 17th 2011 for treatment of melanoma patients whose tumors have BRAF mutations (new Zelboraf announcement order). Now that the drug has been approved, your doctor can prescribe it after determining that your tumor has this mutation.

In clinical trials with Zelboraf, patients’ tumors stopped growing for several months and patients were 63% less likely to die during the trial, as compared to those receiving chemotherapy.  Be sure to find out if Zelboraf is right for you before you order.

Zelboraf is being approved with a first-of-a-kind test called the cobas 4800 BRAF V600 Mutation Test, a companion diagnostic that will help determine if a patient’s melanoma cells have the BRAF V600E mutation.

The BRAF protein is normally involved in regulating cell growth, but is mutated in about half of the patients with late-stage melanomas. Zelboraf is a BRAF inhibitor that is able to block the function of the V600E-mutated BRAF protein.

“This has been an important year for patients with late-stage melanoma. Zelboraf is the second new cancer drug approved that demonstrates an improvement in overall survival,” said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Oncology Drug Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “In March, we approved Yervoy (ipilimumab), another new treatment for late-stage melanoma that also showed patients live longer after receiving the drug.”

What to know before you order? Zelboraf’s side effects.

The most common side effects reported in patients receiving Zelboraf included joint pain, rash, hair loss, fatigue, nausea, and skin sensitivity when exposed to the sun. About 26 percent of patients developed a skin-related cancer called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, which was managed with surgery. Patients treated with Zelboraf should avoid sun exposure. Patients that develop squamous cell carcinoma as a side effect of Zelboraf are treated by surgery and can continue with treatment

Use of ordered ZELBORAF and Important Side Effect Information for Zelboraf

This information does not take the place of talking to your doctor about your medical condition or your treatment with ZELBORAF.

ZELBORAF is a prescription medicine used to treat a type of skin cancer called melanoma, that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be removed by surgery, and has a certain type of abnormal “BRAF” gene.

ZELBORAF may cause a type of skin cancer called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cuSCC). CuSCC usually does not spread to other parts of the body. Check your skin and tell your doctor about skin changes including a new wart, a sore or bump that bleeds or does not heal, or a mole that changes size or color.

While taking ZELBORAF, you should avoid going out in the sun. When you go outside, wear clothes that protect your skin, including head, face, hands, arms, and legs. Use lip balm and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Possible serious side effects of ZELBORAF include severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, changes in the electrical activity of your heart called QT prolongation, which can potentially be life-threatening, abnormal liver function tests, eye problems, or new melanoma lesions.

Common side effects of ZELBORAF include joint pain, rash, hair loss, tiredness, sunburn or sun sensitivity, nausea, itching, or warts. You need to know these before ordering Zelboraf.

These are not all of the possible side effects of ZELBORAF. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. For more information about side effects, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Call your doctor for medical advice about any side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. You may also report side effects to Genentech at 1-888-835-2555.

Please see accompanying full Prescribing Information and Medication Guide for additional important safety information.

How can you order Zelboraf?

With Zelboraf’s approval, your doctor can now prescribe this drug for you if your tumor has the BRAF mutation. To test the tumor, your doctor would order a laboratory test.

Several clinical trials are testing whether a combination of Zelboraf with other drugs might work better than Zelboraf alone. One exciting clinical trial combines Zelboraf with Yervoy, a new immunotherapy drug (Order more details about Zelboraf clinical trials). The following table lists some of these clinical trials that Zelboraf went through, and by clicking on the name of a trial you can learn more about the drug used and the types of patients that the trial is looking for.

MDA Telethon 2011 Raised $61.5 Million Without Jerry Lewis.

What Does Labor Day Mean?

What Happened At The MDA Telethon? Tribute To Jerry Lewis.

The 46th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon was broadcasted nationwide from 6 p.m. to midnight in every U.S. time zone on Sunday and the iconic show attracted outstanding talents on its first time without Jerry Lewis’ hosting.

One of the biggest stars participating to the MDA Telethon 2011 was Celine Dion, who performed in the opening hour.

“It’s always a privilege to be part of the MDA Labor Day Telethon,” said Celine Dion.

“I hope by taking part in this great cause, I can help MDA in its mission to make life better for families who are fighting muscle diseases. From supporting scientists who are searching for treatments and cures, to helping children go to MDA summer camp, MDA provides love and care in so many ways.”

Celine Dion’s motivation was shared by other artists who participated in Sunday’s prime-time Telethon, which has been broadcasted by more than 150 television stations nationwide.

Jordin Sparks At MDA Telethon 2011

Jordin Sparks At MDA Telethon 2011

In a group message so typical of their harmonious sound, Boyz II Men members Shawn Stockton, and Nathan and Wanya Morris said:

“We’re excited to be part of the MDA Labor Day Telethon this year and lend our voices to a such a good cause. We remember watching it growing up, and it’s great to be a part of something so historic that benefits so many people every day. Be sure to tune in to catch us on the Telethon this Sunday.”

Also, Tony Award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp, when confirming that “Come Fly Away” principal dancers would perform two Telethon dance segments to the legendary original vocals of Frank Sinatra, noted that:

“Dance has the power to move people with nothing more than the flow of bodies and the expression of emotion. Progressive muscle diseases rob people of the power to move but not the experience of emotion or humanity. Hopefully, our dance performance will move us one step closer to preserving free motion for people with muscle diseases.”

When people tuned in to watch the prime-time Telethon on Sunday, they have immediately been engaged by the “Make a Muscle, Make a Difference”® show opening using dance, music and striking visuals of everyday people flexing their biceps muscles to immediately let America know how important it is to “Be the Next to Flex”® for MDA.

Followed by the incredible magic of Penn & Teller, plus the intergalactic fun of music phenomenon Voca People, and an unforgettable performance by Celine Dion, the show’s first hour, which also introduced Telethon co-hosts Nigel Lythgoe (“American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance”), Nancy O’Dell (“Entertainment Tonight”), Alison Sweeney (NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” and author of The Mommy Diet), and Jann Carl (Emmy-winning journalist and independent producer).

The second hour of the MDA Labor Day Telethon has been full of many memorable moments, too.

Darius Rucker performed solo and also sang a duet with MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali of Redlands, Calif. Other performances on the Telethon stage in the second hour included the JabbaWockeeZ, winners of the MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” competition; the incredibly popular Italian trio II Volo; and Ellen DeGeneres protégé Greyson Chance.

“The View’s” Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, as well as NFL running back Reggie Bush have made special appeals.

The third hour of the Telethon has been full of extraordinary entertainers, too. Lady Antebellum, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Feinstein, and renowned Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel appeared to encourage even greater public support to help advance MDA’s lifesaving mission.

Plus, “One Step Away,” the teenage Boston band making their network television debut, has rocked the house for MDA. One “Step Away” is one of three winners of the second annual iHeartRadio.com “Get Discovered!” talent competition entered by more than 7,800 artists.

[youtube pApsYAhPod8]

The fourth hour presented the exceptional musical stylings of Jimmy Webb, Richie Sambora, Jon Secada and Maureen McGovern, as well as the first of two “Come Fly Away” dance performances to the legendary original vocals of Frank Sinatra.

These powerful performances have been reinforced by appeals from R&B singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson and NFL legend Kurt Warner, as well as by a high-energy performance by the Universal Cheerleaders Association all-stars, 36 of the nation’s best cheerleaders representing 17 states.

Sensational entertainers continued to appear for MDA Telethon in the fifth hour, with Grammy-nominated platinum recording artist Jordin Sparks, Martina McBride, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and a second “Come Fly Away” dance performance to the sizzling vocals of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.”

The soap stars of “General Hospital’s” rock band Port Chuck, Tony Award-winning ventriloquist Jay Johnson, and Brokedown Cadillac (upbeat country group which also won 2011 iHeartRadio.com “Get Discovered!” competition to secure its live network television performance opportunity on the Telethon), also performed from the national Telethon stage at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning group, Boyz II Men, has opened the sixth and final hour of the 2011 prime-time Telethon. They have been followed by Rootdown, the Oregon-based “Get Discovered!”-winning band with a Reggae hip-hop sound. Then, Billy Ray Cyrus performed his new single “Nineteen,” and “Glee’s” Max Adler made “Make a Muscle, Make a Difference” for MDA leading up to a spectacular America tribute involving more than 100 performers. Scored with a patriotic medley, the finale was anchored by Jordin Sparks, Jon Secada, Maureen McGovern, Richie Sambora, Tommy Emanuel and 70 kids from the Clark County Children’s choir.

Jerry Lewis Is Missing From Today’s Telethon.

Jerry Lewis won’t host MDA Labor Day Telethon.

The 46th edition of the annual MDA Labor Day Telethon wasted no time in offering a tribute to its longtime host, Jerry Lewis, and potentially diffusing any backlash or disappointment with his absence.

A dance performance opened the MDA Labor Day Telethon 2011 and then, Jerry Lewis‘ replacements — Nigel Lythgoe, Jann Carl, Alison Sweeney and Nancy O’Dell — took the stage and immediately took turns talking about the comedian’s five-decade commitment to raising money for a cure.

The 46th edition of the annual MDA Labor Day Telethon wasted no time in offering a tribute to its longtime host, Jerry Lewis

The 46th edition of the annual MDA Labor Day Telethon wasted no time in offering a tribute to its longtime host, Jerry Lewis

Huge images of Jerry Lewis at various stages of his career served as a backdrop on stage as the 2011 MDA Telethon hosts talked.

Last May, Jerry Lewis, who had hosted the telethon since 1966, announced he was retiring as MDA chairman and that this year’s Labor Day weekend telethon would be his last. But the MDA subsequently — and rather tersely and unceremoniously — said Lewis would not host this year’s show.

The new MDA Telethon hosts talked alluded to how Jerry Lewis had “retired.”

Jerry Lewis’ publicist Candi Cazau declined to comment to the AP when told of the comments to start Sunday night’s program.

Muscular Dystrophy Association spokesman, Jim Brown refused to say anything elaborate on the hosts’ words, but said the telethon would include at least one more nod to Jerry Lewis.

Nancy O’Dell talked about how MDA was there for her and her family while her mother was dying of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease).

“And, boy, did Jerry’s closing song, <<You’ll Never Walk Alone>>, hit home the year that my mom passed away,” she said.

Nigel Lythgoe talked about how Jerry Lewis was irreplaceable.

“What you have done for this organization and its families is something close to a miracle,” he said. “And I know that we all want to carry on your legacy. We’re going to try and, with a humble heart, and occasionally a good laugh — because you taught us, above all, that laughter can cure almost anything — I trust we will continue to be successful.”

Then, the show and the fundraising continued.

People who ate more chocolate had lower incidents of cardiovascular disease and stroke compared to those who ate less, a study finds.

Eating chocolate could benefit the heart, possibly lowering heart disease by 37%.

The results coming from a meta-analysis were released online this week in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers from the United Kingdom and Colombia focused on 7 studies looking at the link between eating chocolate and a reduction in heart disease that included 114,009 people.

Eating chocolate could benefit the heart, possibly lowering heart disease by 37 percent

Eating chocolate could benefit the heart, possibly lowering heart disease by 37 percent

Of those 7 studies, 5 showed an association between higher levels of chocolate consumption and a lowered risk of cardiometabolic illness. The highest levels were linked with a 37% drop in cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in stroke, compared to the lowest levels.

There was no significant association seen between chocolate consumption and heart failure, and only one study drew a link between eating chocolate and a lowered risk of diabetes.

None of the studies, including the meta-analysis, were funded by a chocolate company or a related industry.

However, the study authors caution about eating chocolate with abandon. After all, they point out, chocolate isn’t exactly calorie-free. Although the participants in the studies ate a variety of chocolate products, including chocolate bars, drinks, nutritional supplements and desserts, all chocolate is not created equal, and eating too much of the stuff that’s filled with fat and sugar can put on pounds, possibly upping the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes — the very stuff that can lead to cardiovascular problems.

The study authors noted that among the studies there was no obvious dose-response relationship between chocolate and the risk of cardiometabolic disorders, so for now, everything in moderation, as they say.

And although the studies reviewed did control for a number of factors, including age, body mass index, physical activity, smoking and aspects of diet, there still may be other factors at work causing the heart benefits.

If chocolate is the root of these heart-healthy advantages, it may be due to its polyphenol content, anti-oxidants that could improve endothelial function (which may affect the risk of stroke and heart attack) as well as have a positive effect on blood pressure and insulin resistance.

More studies are needed, the authors wrote, to go beyond just an association and determine causation.

A Much More Gentle Approach To Weight Loss

A new study’s findings showed that the best way to burn belly fat is through aerobic exercise instead of weights lifting.

Researchers from Duke University of North Carolina, US, have monitored people who did aerobics for 8 months and compared them to those who did just weights lifting.

The group of participants into study lost almost 20 times as much fat around their stomachs.

The aerobics group lost around 2.5 square inches (about 16 sq cm) of belly fat, and a group that combined both aerobic and weights lifting lost only 1.5 square inches (less than 10 sq cm).

The best way to burn belly fat is through aerobic exercise instead of weights lifting

Cris Slentz, from Duke University, who undertook the study, said:

“Resistance training is great for improving strength and increasing lean body mass.

“But aerobic exercise is better for losing belly fat because it burns more calories.”

Other study’s findings showed that those who combined weights lifting and aerobics didn’t see any further health benefits than those who only did aerobic, in terms of insulin resistance and liver fat, as Live Science reported.

Duke University researchers therefore concluded that aerobic exercise alone is more beneficial for obese and overweight individuals.

According to specialists, “belly fat” is defined as visceral fat, which is found deep in the stomach that surrounds the internal organs, as opposed to subcutaneous fat that is found underneath the skin.

Visceral fat is more threatening to health, as it lies closer to the organs and is associated with diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Duke University researchers studied 196 overweight, sedentary adults between 18 and 70 ages, who were divided into three exercise groups – aerobics, weights lifting and combined.

Cris Slentz added:

“When it comes to increased health risks, where fat is deposited in the body is more important than how much fat you have.

“What really counts is how much exercise you do, how many miles you walk and how many calories you burn.

“If you choose to walk at a lower aerobic intensity, it will simply take longer to burn the same amount of unhealthy fat.”

The study will be published in the American Journal of Physiology Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Seychelles: British bridegroom killed by a shark.

Gemma Redmond, the widow of honeymoon shark attack victim Ian Redmond, gave a heartfelt tribute at his funeral to her “soul mate and best friend”.

Gemma Redmond, 27, told the hundreds of mourners at St Michael’s Church in Dalton, Lancashire, where they were married three weeks ago:

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – you were and are my best friend.”

“I promise you will never ever be forgotten and I will miss you so very much. You, above all people, knew how hard I found it to say goodbye to others and so I know you will understand if I don’t say it. What I will say instead is <<See you soon!>>. I’m looking forward to it so very much.”

About 300 people were at the St Michael’s Church for the service conducted by the Reverend Tim Barton and other 200 mourners stood outside within the grounds and listened to the service on loudspeakers.

Gemma Redmond recalled her wedding day and then remembered their Seychelles honeymoon.

“We were having such a happy time,’ she said. ‘It was a lovely adventure and we were enjoying experiencing new things.

“We felt so at peace, so relaxed and were so excited about the future. It was truly romantic.

“Each and every time you went swimming and snorkelling and I watched you, I could never quite believe that I was married to you.

“You were the most handsome and perfect man I have ever seen and I always longed for you to come back out of the sea and be back with me.

“We could talk about anything and everything with each other – laugh, cry or just be quiet.

“You completed me and are the best thing that has ever happened to me.

“Whilst I cannot believe that you are gone, I am in shock and hurting so very much. I am comforted and consoled by the rich tapestry of our memories that we formed over our nine years together. Thank you.

“All my love now, forever and always, your wife, Gemma.”

On August 16, just ten days after Gemma, a primary school teacher and Ian Redmond, IT specialist, got married, while they were on honeymoon in the Seychelles, the groom had been attacked by a shark as he was swimming in the waters off Anse Lazio beach on Praslin, the second largest island in the archipelago.

Ian Redmond, 30, was quickly brought to shore where a French surgeon, also on holiday, gave first aid on the beach as his bride looked on, but he lost too much blood due to the massive injuries.

Ian Redmond death was the second fatal shark attack in Seychelles in a month. Just two weeks before, a 36-year-old French tourist was killed by a shark in the same area.

Gemma and Ian were due to set up home in Skelmersdale on their return in a cottage that the groom had refurbished.

Gemma said also at the funeral her husband was referred to by his work colleagues in Leyland as the “Gold Standard” of software developers because of his dedication to work.

“But you were also the Gold Standard of men – always smiling, always finding time for the family and friends that you loved so dearly, you were never cross, just kind,” the widow said.

“Above all, you were the Gold Standard of husbands. Amazing, courageous, inspiring, entertaining, patient and loving.”

Tom Jones, the charismatic veteran singer,  has been forced to cancel a concert in Monaco due to a “severe dehydration”.

The “Sex Bomb” singer, who is now recovering at Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco, denied that a heart attack played a role in the cancellation of the Saturday, August 27 concert, as British media reported.

Tom Jones, 71, apologized to his fans on his website:

“There are NO heart problems, as has been reported in the press,” the singer’s website stated.

Tom Jones, who burst to international fame in 1964 with “It’s Not Unusual” and other hits, blamed his illness on 3-month successful  “Praise & Blame” tour, “where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat”.  Monaco show was supposed to be the finale of his long tour.

“Sir Tom was ordered by doctors not to perform in Monte Carlo yesterday evening due to severe dehydration,” the statement continued.

“This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour.”

Sources said that Tom Jones was admitted to intensive care on Saturday but he was moved to a regular room the next day because “was doing well”.

Sir Thomas John Woodward, known to the public by his stage name Tom Jones, is a Welsh singer, particularly noted for his powerful voice. Since the mid 1960s, Tom Jones has sung many styles of popular music – pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel – and sold over 100 million records.

Tom Jones, whose charisma onstage earned some comparisons to his idol, Elvis Presley, made his singing debut at three.

In 1967, Tom Jones performed for the first time in Las Vegas at the Flamingo. His charismatic performances and style of dress (increasingly featuring his open half unbuttoned shirts and tight trousers) became part of his stage act. Women would swoon and scream, and some would throw their knickers on stage. Soon after he began to play Las Vegas, he chose to record less, instead concentrating on his lucrative club performances. At Caesars Palace, his shows were traditionally a knicker-hurling frenzy of raw sexual tension and good-time entertainment. It was there that women started throwing hotel room keys on stage.

Tom Jones and his idol Elvis Presley met in 1965 at the Paramount film stage, when Elvis was filming Paradise, Hawaiian Style. Afterward, they became good friends, spending more and more time together in Las Vegas and even duetting until the early hours at Presley’s private Las Vegas suite. Their friendship endured until Elvis Presley’s death in 1977.

Tom Jones held onto his sexy image for decades, only recently agreeing to perform and be photographed without touching up the gray in his hair and beard.

However, Tom Jones still plans for this year a short tour of central and Eastern Europe starting in November.

Hurricane Irene: death toll more than 15 and 6 million power outages.

Hurricane names: how and why scientists named hurricanes?

North Carolina: hurricane Irene hit Atlantic beach and killed one person.

New York: 370,000 residents get evacuation order ahead of Irene.

Hurricane Irene killed last night at least ten people, including two children, as the storm hit North Carolina and Virginia. More than 2 million people from South Carolina to Maryland were without power as the giant 580-mile-wide storm brought widespread flooding and high winds that knocked down power lines.

Meanwhile Irene’s power was downgraded to category 1, but as it approached New York, forecasts warned it would hit the city at or near hurricane strength.

According to the National Weather Service, conditions were ripe for tornadoes in the city, Long Island and southern Connecticut, as twisters were reported touching down in Delaware and Maryland.

In Maryland, officials warned of a potential dam failure late on Saturday, they warned “may cause significant flooding that could threaten people, homes and roads downstream from the St. Mary’s Lake Dam”.

Tornadoes were reported touching down in Delaware and Maryland.

In Lewes, Delaware, Governor Jack Markell said at least 17 homes had been damaged by a twister. In total, up to 40 houses were damaged in the town because of the storm.

The National Weather Service reported a tornado touching down in Nassau Station, Delaware, and Maryland State Police said there was an apparent tornado on the lower Eastern Shore of the state.

Andrew Cuomo, the New York Governor raised the number of National Guard soldiers deployed to New York City to 1,900.

The soldiers, who have been mobilized from across the state, will assist with traffic control on bridges and tunnels, sandbagging operations at the World Trade Center site, evacuation shelter operations in New York, the construction of barriers for railway yards and train tunnels, and other hurricane emergency efforts.

Hurricane Irene came ashore near North Carolina’s Cape Lookout around 7:30am EDT, and then chugged up the coast on a north-northeast track.

Irene stirred up 7 feet waves, and forecasts warned of storm-surge danger on the coasts of Virginia and Delaware, along the Jersey Shore and in New York Harbor and Long Island Sound.

On Augus 27 is the 82th birthday anniversary of Ira Levin, mystery and suspense writer, dramatist and songwriter, awarded with The Grand Masters Award by the Mystery Writers of America in 2003.

Ira Levin‘s work generated a worldwide interest and inspired lots of famous movies. Rosemary’s Baby (the best known novel), A Kiss Before Dying (Edgar Allan Poe Award), The Boys from Brazil, The Stepford Wives, Sliver, Deathtrap (the best known play), This Perfect Day (Prometheus Hall of Fame Award) are among his writings.

Ira Levin became early attracted by mystery and writing.

When he was twelve Ira Levin was fascinated by the magicians of Tannen’s Magic Shop in Times Square and he learned about concealing reality behind illusion. He liked detective stories and had a collection of mystery books. Anagrams played major roles in Rosemarys’s Baby and Son of Rosemary. Ira Levin continued the tradition of  using the transposition of letters (Lon Chaney Jr. in Son of Dracula) and basics of cryptology (Poe in The Gold Bug).

Ira Levin said he had considered being a writer from the time he was fourteen or fifteen years old. “Before that I wanted to be a magazine illustrator – I probably would have painted Gothic scenes.”

He was accused thinking ahead to the movie script while writing. He denied saying he is a playwright at heart.

Ira Levin's "Stepford Wives" entered the common vocabulary

Ira Levin's "Stepford Wives" entered the common vocabulary

Ira Levin‘s first novel, A Kiss Before Dying (1953) won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America as the year’s best first mystery.

The Underground Gourmet published in 1954 was adapted for TV and appeared on G.E. Theater, hosted by Ronald Reagan.

Rosemary’s Baby (horror, 1967) was a best-seller (over 5 million paperback copies in the U.S.) and it was translated into lots of languages. It became a horror classic and a milestone. It was followed by books and movies about Satan (The Omen, The Exorcist and others). Ira Levin felt somehow responsible for the rise in Christian Fundamentalism, but “I didn’t send back any of the royalty checks,” he said.

Ira Levin read Future Shock (Alvin Toffler, 1970) and was fascinated by its references to domestic robots. The animated figures in the Hall of Presidents at Disneyland also enchanted him. In this way The Stepford Wives (satirical thriller, 1972) emerged. It tells about men’s desires. The way they found to fulfilled them was considered insulting by Women’s Lib Movement. The word Stepford entered the common vocabulary, with meanings from someone who allow his/her role in society to be dictated to someone resembling an automaton, someone conformist, submissive, or unemotional, mechanical.

This Perfect Day (heroic science fiction, 1970) was often compared with Brave New World (Aldous Huxley), and 1984 (George Orwell). Generally, Ira Levin just tells the story without making any judgements regarding the basic state of the human race, but in this novel he talks about absolute control over the human emotions and desires.

Ira Levin saw an article on cloning that included a picture of Adolf Hitler and that was the beginning of The Boys From Brazil (thriller, 1976).

Three of his mystery novels begin with similar facts: Rosemary Woodhouse is sure she would enjoy living at the Bramford (Rosemary’s Baby), Joanna Eberhart thinks she has found the perfect home (The Stepford Wives), Kay Norris is delighted to move into 1300 Madison Ave (Sliver, 1991).

The basic premise of Ira Levin’s Deathtrap (1978) is: How far will someone go to have a hit play? and it was a hit play, it ran for 1,792 consecutive performances.

“Ira Levin makes the fact that we’re going to die okay. That’s one of the things that horror novels in general do.” said Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk.

Ira Levin died from a heart attack on November 12, 2007.

Izmir murders latest updates.

Shannon Graham, the 15-year-old girl, whose Turkish boyfriend is the prime suspect in her mother’s murder, attended Marion Graham’s funeral service in Northern Ireland this morning.

Marion Graham and her best friend Kathy Dinsmore, both 53, were stabbed to death in a forest near city of Izmir, 75 miles north of the Turkish holiday resort of Kusadasi last Thursday.

Marion Graham’s funeral service took place this morning at St Mary’s Chapel in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Sad Shannon Graham, victim’s daughter, worn a ring on the third finger of her left hand, but it was unclear whether is an engagement ring.

Turkish waiter, Shannon Graham‘s boyfriend Recep Cetin, originally thought to be 17, but who may be older, is the main suspect in the Izmir double murder.

Father John Byrne told the mourners in Newry:

“Both families are united in their grief and it is natural that they have so many questions but so few answers.

Losing someone so close as a mother and a dear friend has caused numbness and confusion.”

Father described Marion Graham, who had five children, as “a loving mother and great friend”.

“She lived her life to the full and enjoyed the company of friends and neighbours,” he said.

“Marion was still young and had much more to give in life but any plans and expectations for the future have been cruelly cut short and it will take time for her loved ones to come to terms with this life-shattering episode.”

Marion Graham and Kathy Dinsmore bodies were flown to Dublin on Wednesday and Shannon Graham was among those who accompanied the coffins on their way home.

Canon John Kearney of St Peter’s Church from Warrenpoint, said during Kathy Dinsmore’s funeral service:

“For so many people in this church today, the death of Kathy has turned their world upside down.

We are shocked as individuals and we are visibly shaken as a community when we learned about the unexpected and tragic death of Kathy who was born and reared here in Warrenpoint and was known by so many.

We do not want to believe or accept that a person who was known so well and loved so much is now dead.

In a sense we are paralyzed. We are suspended in disbelief.

Today there is a huge emptiness in our hearts because Kathy has been taken away from us in this way.”

Some regional politicians attended the both victims’ funerals.

Marion Graham and Kathy Dinsmore were very close friends and were on an extended stay in Turkey when the stabbings took place.

Recep Cetin is the prime suspect in Shannon Graham's mother murder.

Recep Cetin is the prime suspect in Shannon Graham's mother murder.

Recep Cetin, the chief suspect in women’s murder may be held in prison until the end of Ramadan after a prosecutor was appointed to oversee charges.

Recep Cetin, whose true age is not known, will be held in custody for at least another week as the Islamic holy month ends on August 30.

The Turkish waiter, who has eventually confessed to killing the two women in a forest near Izmir, earlier tried to cover up their murders by claiming they had been attacked by a gang of men.

Recep Cetin is alleged to have driven Marion Graham and Kathy Dinsmore to the woodland area of Buca, near Izmir, and killed them. Marion Graham was stabbed in her heart and Cathy Dinsmore had her throat cut.

Reports claim Recep Cetin told police he had pleaded with Marion Graham one last time in the woods to let Shannon Graham stay in Kusadasi and marry him.

But Marion refused, claiming Shannon Graham was too young, and was supported by her friend Kathy.

On August 24 the stronghold of Bab al-Aziziya was captured and a photo-album with Condoleeza Rice’s photos was found inside the compound.

Although it was not confirmed that the album belonged to Gaddafi, the dictator of Libya  has shown more than appreciation for Rice in many ways.

In 2003, when she was George W. Bush’s national security adviser, Gaddafi canceled his weapons program and took responsibility for the 1988 bombing of a plane over Lockerbie, Scotland. That made Bush administration to stop considering him a foreign sponsor of terrorism and the US established full diplomatic relations with Libya in 2006.

“I support my darling black African woman. I admire and am very proud of the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders… Leezza, Leezza, Leezza… I love her very much.” Gaddafi praised Condoleezza in a 2007 interview for Al Jazeera.

In 2008 Muammar al Gaddafi welcomed Condoleezza Rice at the place where the pictures were discovered. He greeted her by putting his hand against his heart. This is traditional Arab greeting, but it seemed for Gaddafi that act meant more.

Crown Publishers says Condoleezza Rice shares her perspective on important issues and she talks about behind-the-scenes maneuvers (terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, world’s relationships with Iran, North Korea, and Libya, the fates of Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Lebanon, the clashes involving India and Pakistan, Russia and Georgia, and in East Africa).

Rice published another book in October 2010, “Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family,”, that was a bestseller. Its trade paperback edition of is scheduled to be released in October.

Condoleezza Rice is also an accomplished pianist and has appeared, as herself, on television’s “30 Rock.” She has never married and has no children.

“The best part of being a mom is the kid herself — that you get to have this little person be your friend and hang out with you (and drive you crazy!),” Jennifer Garner told Parents magazine at the time.

“Obviously your life changes and your heart expands, and it’s something you can’t even put into words without sounding incredibly sentimental and cliched — both of which I am! But what it really is, is this new being is there, which is just the most fun ever.”

[googlead tip=”vertical_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”] The University of Michigan Health System researchers said stem cell could offer new hope for unlocking the secrets of bipolar disorder.

A new project begins at the University of Michigan as the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund marks ten years in the search for a cure of bipolar disorder.

According to a University of Michigan Health System statement  posted on its website on August 22, the new stem cell lines developed from the skin of adults living with bipolar disorder are providing researchers at the University of Michigan Health System an unprecedented opportunity to delve into the genetic and biological underpinnings of the devastating mood disorder.

Scientists will be able to link new findings – such as how gene expression is affected by different medications – to extensive clinical and demographic data from the cell donors, who are also participants in an ongoing long-term study of hundreds of individuals with bipolar disorder.

The induced pluripotent stem cells could offer new hope for unlocking the secrets of bipolar disorder.

The induced pluripotent stem cells could offer new hope for unlocking the secrets of bipolar disorder.

The new research comes as the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund, based at the University of Michigan Depression Center, prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of its establishment by Waltraud “Wally” Prechter following the July 2001 death of her husband, Heinz. Before he took his life, few people knew that the well-known automotive entrepreneur wrestled with bipolar disorder.

“Currently the best treatments for bipolar disorder are only effective for 30 percent to 50 percent of patients,” said Melvin McInnis, M.D., the Thomas B and Nancy Upjohn Woodworth Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression at the University of Michigan Medical School and associate director at the University of Michigan Depression Center.

“New discoveries have been limited, in part due to the lack of access to tissue and cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. But that is now changing because of the Prechter research program and advances in stem cell research.”

The new stem cell lines – among the first to be created by the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Consortium for Stem Cell Therapies – were made from fibroblasts from skin samples donated by adult research volunteers both with and without bipolar disorder.[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]

In the lab, scientists can coax these skin cells into behaving like embryonic stem cells. Known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSC, these, in turn, can be manipulated to develop into different types of body cells, including brain cells.

“We will be able to see if there are differences in how the neurons of a person with bipolar disorder make connections, determine how they respond to different medications and explore potential deficiencies in signaling pathways,” explained Sue O’Shea, Ph.D., a professor of cell and developmental biology at the Medical School who leads the stem cell lab with Gary Smith, Ph.D, professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

“So far, five lines have been created. The goal, is to develop 30 cell lines – 20 from people with bipolar disorder and 10 control subjects. Creating each line is a painstaking and expensive process.”

“We often think of stems cells being used in therapies to treat disease, but this is a great example of stem cells’ usefulness for studying the mechanisms of disease.”

“The iPS cells renew themselves, so they’re an unlimited source of material and offer hope to individuals with bipolar disorder.”

Still, the researchers caution, new treatments spurred by this work could be a decade or more away.

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, affects 5.7 million adults in the United States. It is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and marked by significant changes in mood, thoughts, energy and behavior.

Heinz Prechter, the well known automotive entrepreneur wrestled with bipolar disorder.

Heinz Prechter, the well known automotive entrepreneur wrestled with bipolar disorder.

[googlead tip=”lista_medie” aliniat=”dreapta”]Because bipolar disorder runs in families, research at University of Michigan (U-M) has focused on studying disease genes. There is no single gene that “causes” someone to become bipolar, but the disease has its roots in genetic vulnerabilities.

The Prechter Bipolar Genetic Repository already houses more than 1,500 genetic samples from people with bipolar disorder and healthy controls from studies at U-M along with collaborating sites: Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Cornell and Penn State. It is the first independently funded bipolar genetics repository in the nation. In addition to sharing the knowledge between the different universities, confidential, coded DNA repository samples and clinical information will be made available to scientists worldwide to accelerate and share clinical breakthroughs in evaluating and treating bipolar disorder.

The Prechter longitudinal study has already collected more than 5 years’ worth of data.

“I’m really proud that over the last 10 years my husband’s legacy has grown to include the strides we’re making to understand bipolar disorder and find new treatments,” Wally Prechter says.

“Bipolar is like any other illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease – and deserves the same urgency.”

“That lack of effective treatment is a big reason for the high risk of suicide or suicide attempts among people with bipolar disorder. Anywhere from 5% to 15% of bipolar patients will attempt or commit suicide sometime in their lives,” said McInnis.

“Depression caused by Heinz Prechter’s bipolar disorder affected his whole being,” said Wally Prechter.

“He was extremely exuberant and happy, and very, very optimistic, to the point that I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve never met anyone like that.’ But when he was depressed it was to the point that he would stay home and just sit in a chair and look out at the river,” she said.

The memory of how her brilliant husband was reduced to such a low, unable to tell anyone what he was going through, is part of what continues to drive her today.

U-M Health System CEO and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., points to the research as a great example of the strides that can be made when public institutions and private donors collaborate on research that benefits the public.

“The Prechter research shows how we continue to fuel innovation through exciting collaborations that highlight our commitment to bench-to-bedside medical advances,” Pescovitz said.

“We are very fortunate to have Wally and her family as part of our Michigan family.”

London: “Red Arrows” (British Royal Air Force) pilot died in a plane crash

[googlead tip=”patrat_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”]Acording to Ministry of Defense the plane of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, 33, crashed near an airport some 100 miles from London. The plane apparently suffered a failure after performing at the Bournemouth Air Festival. Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging was flying under the call sign RED 4 and it seemed to have tried to eject only after guiding the RAF jet towards a field to avoid crashing over the houses. He was the first Red Arrows pilot to die in a crash for 33 years.

It is with sadness that the MOD must confirm the death of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging of the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team (The Red Arrows).

[googlead tip=”lista_mica” aliniat=”stanga”]Flight Lieutenant Egging was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft – Red 4 – crashed around 1km South East of Bournemouth Airport at 1350 on Saturday 20 August 2011.

A full Service Inquiry into the details of the crash has been initiated. It would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident at this time.

Dr Emma Egging, the wife of Flt Lt Jon Egging, said:

“Jon was everything to those that knew him, and he was the best friend and husband I could ever have wished for. I know that he would have wanted me to say something from the heart at this time. There was nothing bad about Jon. He loved his job and was an exemplary pilot. Watching him today, I was the proudest I’ve ever been. I loved everything about him, and he will be missed.”

Group Captain Simon Blake, the Commandant of the RAF’s Central Flying School, said:

“Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, known as ‘Eggman’, joined the Team as Red 4 in the Autumn of 2010. A gifted aviator, he was chosen to fly in the Red 4 slot, on the right hand outside of the famous Diamond Nine formation – an accolade in itself being the most demanding position allocated to a first year pilot. Throughout his winter training and the display season to date, his professionalism, skill and humility have shone through.”

“A true team player, his good nature and constant smile will be sorely missed by all. In such a close knit team, this tragedy will be keenly felt by his fellow team members, the Reds and all of the engineering and support staff, the Blues.”

Air Vice Marshal Mark Green, Air Officer Commanding 22 (Training) Group, said:

“I first met Flt Lt Jon Egging in 2003 when I became his Station Commander. Even at that early stage in his career, Jon’s professionalism, competence and ever present smile made him stand out from the crowd. Hence, his eventual selection for duties with the Red Arrows came as no surprise. His time with the Team was typified by the characteristics that were Jon’s trademark: professionalism, enthusiasm for life and a willingness to help others that transcended all boundaries. Jon will be sorely missed by all those that had the privilege to know him; our thoughts and prayers are with Jon’s family and friends at this tragic time.”

Flight Lieutenant Egging, aged 33 from Rutland, flew the Harrier GR9 before joining the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team. Jon became interested in flying at an early age, inspired by his airline pilot father who used to take him ‘down route’, allowing him into the cockpit for take off and landing. Jon is survived by his wife, Emma.

[googlead tip=”vertical_mic”]He attended Southam School in Warwickshire gaining A-Levels in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He was a member of 2028 (Southam) Sqn Air Training Corps from age 13. During the sixth form he was awarded a Royal Air Force Flying Scholarship and had his first solo flight in a Cessna 152 flying from Wellesbourne Mountford Aerodrome. Following a gap year spent working in the UK and travelling around Australia, Jon went on to read a BSc in Environmental Science at Southampton University. He joined Southampton University Air Squadron and was awarded a Royal Air Force Bursary in his second year.

Whilst at University Jon completed Elementary Flying Training with the University Air Squadron, flying the Bulldog; he went on to join the Royal Air Force in 2000. Selected for fast jet training Jon flew the Tucano and Hawk before becoming a ‘Creamie’ Qualified Flying Instructor on the Hawk at Royal Air Force Valley, teaching both students and instructors. Jon went on to serve with IV(AC) Squadron – ‘Happy IV’ – based at Royal Air Force Cottesmore, flying the Harrier GR9.

During his time on the front line Jon was proud to support coalition ground forces when flying operational missions in Afghanistan. He has also taken part in exercises in the United Kingdom and America. As part of Joint Force Harrier, Jon served with IV(AC) Squadron on HMS Illustrious, flying training missions off the UK coastline. He became the Squadron Qualified Flying Instructor during his last year on ‘Happy IV’, making the transition to teach on the Harrier Operational Conversion Unit, based at Royal Air Force Wittering, in April 2010.

Defence Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, said:

“It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging whilst performing with the Red Arrows today. He was a gifted aviator who was selected for one of the most demanding flying jobs in the RAF. Joining the Red Arrows was his lifetime ambition and he performed with great skill whilst on the team. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Emma and his family and friends at this terrible time.”

“What a beautiful day for a wedding!

On our way to the wedding of @chelywright & @lulublitzer. Triumph of spirit over fear, love over hate. @wishmeawaydoc celebrates open hearts, ” said Chely on Twitter.

In May 2010 the forty years old singer, Chely Wright, has declared that she was a lesbian.

I feel like I’m floating. It’s like my friends who are in the know, which are not many, and my family members who know, which isn’t all of them, are lifting me up to get through this,” she said.

Some time later, Chely said coming out “didn’t help my career.” Her albums’ sales were down and beside that an article in Tennessean remarked Chely Wright‘s genre has begun to change to Americana.

” Country music would rather an artist be a drunk, they even encourage and endorse that one. You get good money from Jim Beam to put that emblem on the side of your bus. I was on the Crown Royal tour, and I have to say it was one of my favorite tours. They would rather you were a drug addict than be gay. They will forgive you if you beat your wife, lose your kids to state, get six divorces, make a sex tape, get labeled as a tramp — any and all of it is better than being gay.” Said Chely Wright in an Los Angeles Times’ interview (with Geoff Boucher).

A documentary film about Wright’s admitting she is a lesbian, Wish Me Away, was released in June 2011. The film’s title is one of the tracks on her 2010 album, Lifted Off the Ground. The movie, filmed over three years, premiered at the 35th annual Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco. Wish Me Away (WMA) won two awards: Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Frameline 35 Festival in San Francisco.

In 2010 Chely was named one of Out magazine’s annual “100 People of the Year” and Metro Source New York Magazine named Chely Wright as one of the “20 people We Love”.

Turkey murders latest news. Recep Cetin charged with stabbing to death his girlfriend’s mother.

[googlead tip=”patrat_mediu” aliniat=”stanga”]Raymond McGuinness, one of the Izmir murders victim’s ex-husband arrived in Turkey yesterday evening to comfort his distraught daughter, Shannon Graham.

Saturday afternoon, Raymond McGuinness, accompanied by his son David, went to the central courthouse of Izmir to identify the bodies of Marion Elizabeth Graham, his ex-wife and her best friend, Kathy Dinsmore, through photographs.

When he was leaving the court, Shannon Graham’s father said:

“I have met Shannon earlier today, and she is very upset.”

“Once the identification process is over, then we will try to repatriate the bodies back to Ireland, but that won’t be until mid-week.”

“This is clearly a very distressing time for us, and so we would like a bit of privacy.”

Shannon’s father described his ex-wife, one of the Izmir murders victims, as “the life and soul of the party” who “adored Shannon”.

 [googlead tip=”lista_medie” aliniat=”stanga”]

Shannon Graham called the police when her mother and her best friend, Kathy Dinsmore, failed to return from a daytrip with Cetin Recep, who is also known locally by the name Alex.

According to local media reports Cetin Recep stabbed Marion Graham, 54, in the heart and cut Kathy Dinsmore’s throat. Both women were stabbed as many as 15 times.

Cetin Recep confessed the Izmir murders.

Cetin Recep confessed the Izmir murders.

Cetin Recep clashed with Shannon Graham’s mother, Marion, last week when she learned he had kicked Shannon during a fight.

Raymond McGuinness said Marion Graham “went ballistic” and warned Cetin never to lay a finger on her daughter again.

McGuiness said also that Cetin Recep had threatened to kill Marion but that Shannon had dismissed the threat as “just words”. The young Turkish waiter, Cetin Recep, was a “possessive” and jealous boyfriend, who became “besotted” with Shannon when they met about one and a half year ago at the restaurant where he worked.

Last Thursday, Cetin recep took Marion Graham and her best friend, Kathy Dinsmore on a shopping trip to Izmir, while Shannon was in a boat trip for the day.

Cetin’s uncle, who wanted to remain anonymous, said:

“They left by taxi for Izmir, where his father Eyup runs a shop. There, Cetin took a family car to drive the women out to the woodland area of Buca where he murdered them.”

“A friend of Cetin’s called me and said Cetin was at the police station and had been stabbed. I don’t have a lot of time for my nephew – he’s disrespectful and arrogant but he’s family and so I had to go and see.”

“When I arrived at Kusadasi police station, Cetin and Shannon were both there. Cetin had a cut bandaged on his hand. I spoke to him for a few minutes and he told me a story about three men in a black van.”

“He couldn’t explain how he returned to Kusadasi.”

“I talked to Shannon at the station. She seemed very calm and was coming up with suggestions as to who the men in the black van might be. She wasn’t sobbing or crying.”

One of the Recep Cetin’s friends told Turkish police that Cetin had dumped a bag in a bin near family house. Investigators discovered Cetin’s blood-stained clothes.

Recep Cetin’s uncle added:

“I think his story fell apart and after a few further hours of interrogation, Cetin broke down and confessed.”

“He told police that Marion planned to take Shannon back to Ireland, effectively ending their romance.”

“Cetin and Shannon were very much in love.”

“They had been virtually inseparable for the last two years. Shannon’s been coming here since she was a child – she’s well known on Ladies Beach.”

“Everyone knew she was Cetin’s girlfriend. They would argue – that’s quite normal. I think he slapped her once or twice.”

“He would get cross if she sunbathed topless – those things are quite common here with Muslim men dating independent Western women.”

Another friend of Cetin, Veli, from Sundial Tours, known as Slim Jim confirmed that both teenagers were serious about each other:

“Recep was like a younger brother to me. Yes, he could be a bit headstrong but he was a 17-year-old lad. He had the odd fight but nothing serious.”

“He never pushed Shannon to convert to Islam.. He was comfortable with her western style of dress. He knew short skirts and bikinis were normal for her.”

“I’m stunned about what’s happened. It just doesn’t make sense. They could have waited a couple more years and married anyway without her mum’s permission. It’s a terrible tragedy.”

Dan Doyle – ex-husband of the other Izmir murders victim, Kathy Dinsmore – suffered an astonishing tragic coincidence when his second wife died on the same day.

Dan Doyle, from Newry, Ireland – Kathy Dinsmore’s ex-husband – was mourning the death of his second wife, Colette Doyle, who died suddenly in hospital on Thursday, the same day as the Izmir murders.

Kathy Dinsmore and her best friend Marion Graham were murdered in a forest, near the city of Izmir, 70 miles from sunshine resort of Kusadasi after they objected to a Turkish teenager, Recep Cetin, marrying Marion Graham’s 15-year-old daughter, Shannon.

It is understood that Dan Doyle and Kathy Dinsmore have been divorced for several years and that he subsequently married Colette with whom he had three children.

Colette Doyle died suddenly in Craigavon Area Hospital on Thursday, leaving six children – Gareth, Kevin, Brendan, Conlin, Hannah and Danielle. Another child, Darryl, tragically died previously.

Recep Cetin, Turkish waiter who has confessed the murders of two British women in a forest near Izmir city on Thursday has been charged with stabbing to death Marion Graham and her friend Kathy Dinsmore.

Recep Cetin, 17, initially tried to cover up their murders by claiming they had been abducted by a gang of men.

The teenager has been charged with stabbing to death Marion Graham, 54, following a row over her daughter Shannon, 15, who he was dating.

He drove Marion Graham and her friend Kathy Dinsmore, 54, to a forest near Izmir and stabbed them. Marion Graham was stabbed in her heart and Kathy Dinsmore had her throat cut.

Recep Cetin, who is now in police custody, was a well-known figure on the beachfront at the Turkish[googlead tip=”vertical_mic” aliniat=”dreapta”] resort of Kusadasi, at the Aegean Sea, westside of the Turkey, and was nicknamed Alex by British tourists.

The young man, who dropped out of school at 13, had been dating Marion Graham’s daughter, Shannon, for 18 months. Last May, he rented a villa in Kusadasi which he shared with Shannon, Marion Graham and Kathy Dinsmore.

Marion and Shannon Graham, who both lived in County Down, Northern Ireland, but travelled on Irish passports, used to spend the summertime in Turkey.

Marion Graham was stabbed in her heart by Recep Cetin.

Their Kusadasi neighbors said they often heard shouting and arguing coming from villa.

One resident said:

“They didn’t really fit in here. It’s a very quiet, friendly place. There was a lot of aggression and raised voices – we kept our distance.”

Local media reports claim Recep Cetin told police he had pleaded with Marion graham one last time in the woods to let Shannon stay in Kusadasi and marry him. But woman refused, claiming Shannon was too young, and was supported by her friend Kathy Dinsmore.

Last Thursday, Cetin offered to take Marion and her friend on a shopping trip to Izmir, 70 miles away, after dropping off Shannon to go on a boat trip.

According to Recep Cetin’s uncle, who has asked not to be named, the teenager then used a local taxi to ferry women to Izmir where his father Eyup runs a corner shop. From Izmir, Recep Cetin took a family car to drive them out to the woodland area of Buca.

[googlead tip=”lista_mare” aliniat=”stanga”]Recep Cetin returned to Kusadasi where he claimed a black van had pulled up in the forest with three men inside. He also said the men tried to abduct Marion and Kathy, and while trying to fight them off he was cut on the hand and knocked unconscious.

But according to his uncle his story was unconvincing.

“When I arrived at Kusadasi police station Cetin and Shannon were there. Cetin had a cut bandaged on his hand. He couldn’t explain how he returned to Kusadasi.”

“After a few hours of interrogation Cetin broke down and confessed to killing the women. He told police Marion planned to take Shannon back to Ireland, ending their romance and they were heartbroken.”

Turkish police initially arrested Cetin’s father, Eyup Cetin, and the taxi driver that had taken the group to Izmir.

Marion Graham, who was divorced from Shannon’s father, had remarried a Turk named Yucel but they have separated. Shannon’s father, Raymond McGuinness also owns an apartment in Kusadasi.

Raymond McGuiness arrived in Izmir Saturday after flying from Ireland to be with his daughter and to identify the bodies.

He said:

“I have met Shannon and she is very upset. This is clearly a very distressing time for us.”

Recep Cetin has been further remanded in custody but his father, Eyup, and the taxi driver were released.

Last night it emerged that Kathy Dinsmore’s ex-husband, Dan Doyle, suffered a double tragedy last week when his current wife, Colette, 54, died in hospital on the same day Kathy was killed. Australia: Surfer Torn In Half In A Deadly Shark Attack.

Seychelles shark attack: victim’s widow heartfelt tribute at the funeral.

A British honeymooner was killed in a suspected shark attack in the idyllic honeymoon island Seychelles yesterday – as the horrified bride he wed 11 days ago looked on.

Ian Redmond, 30, was attacked in shallow water 100ft off a Seychelles beach. Ian swam off Anse Lazio beach, on the island of Praslin, according to multiple reports in British media.

His bride, Gemma Houghton, 27, from Wigan, was sunbathing and heard him shout “Help, help” as the Bull shark savaged him.

Ian Redmond suffered horrific injuries as the monster tore huge chunks of flesh from his body. According to the eyewitnesses, Ian suffered serious wounds to his chest and limbs, and that one of his arms appeared to have been completely severed.

Fishermen carried him to the beach in a dinghy but he died before paramedics could arrive as his wife wept beside him and screamed “that’s my husband”.

A witness, also called Ian, said: “The swimmer was missing a huge chunk of flesh from his left leg, so much so that I could see the bone of his thigh. He was sickeningly pale, but still had his flippers on both feet.”

“A woman ran over and started screaming. She said, <<That’s my husband! We were just married>>.”

An islander said: “The man was swimming close to the beach. He began splashing and shouting. His arm was ripped off and parts of his torso were missing. There was a horrific amount of blood in the water. It was like Jaws.”

Another witness said someone grabbed Gemma and kept her away from her mutilated husband.

He added: “The damage was too great. It was too horrific for her to see.”

Jeanne Vargiolu, 56, a beach restaurant owner said Ian “had lost one arm and had the flesh stripped off one leg.”

“He also had holes in his chest and stomach.”

She added: “All the meat on one leg was gone.”

Bill Houghton, the bride’s uncle, said: “Gemma is just devastated. They had a perfect wedding. Ian was a fantastic bloke.”

The previous shark attack victim was a French diver.

A Seychelles tourism source said: “The latest bite marks are consistent with that of a Bull shark. It is probably the same rogue maneater.”

The couple’s families, David and Coleta Houghton and Stephen and Corinne Redmond, were flying to the resort last night.

Britain’s Foreign Office late Monday confirmed the death and said it was providing consular assistance to the next of kin.

The British high commissioner was reportedly traveling to the island to comfort Redmond’s new wife, Gemma Houghton, 27, who apparently witnessed the entire gruesome incident from where she lay sunbathing on the beach.

The East African nation is mainly reliant on tourism and fishing. Prince William and his bride spent their 10-day honeymoon there, on the same island chain.

Island officials have launched a hunt for the shark with the help of sealife experts, but in the meantime are warning swimmers to stick to ankle-deep water on the pristine beaches.
