Have you been diagnosed with a medical condition and you’re worried or concerned that you may need surgery? There are several medical problems that can only be resolved through surgery. While physical therapy and pain medications are often the first resort for most musculoskeletal issues, it may not be enough to completely heal your condition or improve your quality of life. If this is the case, your doctor will refer you to a surgeon. Here are a few conditions that may require you to get a surgical consultation.

Hip Replacement

Hip and leg pain can make it extremely difficult to move around and be as mobile as you would like to be. If shooting leg pain, stiffness and numbness are getting in the way of everyday life, you need to see your doctor. They may rule out common problems such as stiffness or arthritis. They may utilize surgery to correct your condition if you make an appointment to inquire about how to fix knock knees or another joint condition. If they determine that the joints in your hip and legs are deteriorating or impinging on nerves, they may suggest hip replacement surgery. An orthopedic surgeon will consult with you to determine if you need a partial or full hip replacement. It depends on your age and the severity of your pain and limited range of motion. The surgery will require an overnight hospital stay and weeks of physical therapy. On a positive note, you may be able to reduce the number of pain medications you’re on and you’ll be able to function throughout the day with a pain-free lifestyle.

Rotator Cuff Surgery

Have you been experiencing a lot of pain lately, especially in your shoulder? If you’ve tried to treat it with over the counter pain medications and you’ve been unsuccessful, you need to consult with your doctor. After doing a physical exam and some diagnostic testing, they may determine that you need surgery on your rotator cuff. This type of surgery is done in most major hospitals and your recovery time depends on the severity of the injury. Rotator cuff surgery includes trimming any bone spur and removing away loose cartilage that is causing the bone to rub against the joint. For cases of advanced arthritis or disc degeneration, metal plates or bone grafts may be used to stabilize the area and improve overall range of motion. Most shoulder surgeries are either outpatient or only require a day or two in the hospital. It depends on any underlying medical problems or complications that may arise.

Unforeseen Emergencies

Sometimes an emergency comes up and it’s imperative that you have surgery right away to save your life or reduce complications. This may include:

  • Ruptured appendix
  • Heart attack or heart blockage
  • Stroke
  • Broken bones

If you find yourself in an emergency situation, your doctor will prepare you for what to expect. It can be emotionally challenging to face an unexpected surgery or procedure. Make sure you let your family know ahead of time if you can what your preference is for a hospital. It’s also good to have a DPOA or medical durable power of attorney in place before surgery. This also includes a living will and a Do Not Resuscitate order if you decide to have one signed. Seeking a qualified attorney to have these things in place sooner rather than later, can avoid scrambling around and being indecisive during a medical emergency.

Heart-Related Conditions

When you have something going on that is cardiovascular in nature, it can really bring you down physically as well as mentally. In some cases, a heart problem is diagnosed through routine testing, such as blood work or when you have your vital signs taken at the doctor’s office. A cardiovascular surgeon will be able to perform most routine surgeries such as heart valve replacements and defibrillators. Because of technological advancements, most cardiovascular related procedures are outpatient or have a minimal postoperative hospital stay. The key is not to delay getting the surgery done, your quality of life may depend on it.

There are many types of surgeries and procedures that all humans may face at one point or time in life. Being armed with the facts is the best way to deal with the issue head on and come up with the best resolution for your situation.

Back pain is a health problem that’s sweeping the nation. It comes in different types, but one thing remains the same; it hurts. So, this article will help provide some solutions for everyone suffering with a bad back, to heal your pain:

Stretching & Strengthening Exercises

In most cases, back pain is caused by muscular imbalances in the pelvic region. More specifically, excessive sitting has caused tight and shortened hip flexors, which tighten your lower back too. This leads to weak and lengthened abdominal and gluteal muscles. So, to alleviate your pain, you should stretch the tight muscles and strengthen the weak ones. This brings more balance to the area and helps improve posture. The same is said for upper back pain which is sometimes caused by tight chest muscles that pull the shoulders forward causing your upper back muscles to lengthen and be weak. Again, strengthen what’s weak and stretch what’s tight.

Surgery

Depending on the nature of your back pain, surgery could be the best option to relieve pain forever. If you have muscle problems that cause your pain, surgery isn’t going to be the solution for you. However, for disk or spinal issues, surgery is an excellent idea. There are many spine surgery methods that deal with the source of your pain and rectify it – hopefully, for good! This includes surgery where metal rods are inserted to straighten your spine if it’s too curved and causing too much pain. The best course of action would be to consult your doctor and ask about any surgical procedures that might benefit you. If they think surgery is needed to cure your daily back pain, then it’s well worth going through with it. Especially if you’ve tried everything else and you’re still in pain.

Myofascial Release

If your back often feels tight and knotted, then you could do with some myofascial release to heal the pain. This is a massage method that focuses on muscle knots, or ‘trigger points’, and works them until they release and your muscles relax. It’s a great way to get almost instant relief from persistent back pain. You can enjoy this via a professional masseuse and make regular trips to keep your back pain-free. Or, you can buy things like foam rollers or massage balls to do it at home by yourself.

Sit Less

A really simple way to cure your back pain is to sit less. I already mentioned how a lot of pain is caused by too much sitting. If you work an office job, then you’ll sit for hours then sit in your car and sit on the sofa. Stand up and go for a walk around the office or lie down on your back when you get home. Do anything that doesn’t involve you sitting for hours on end, and you’ll see drastic improvements.

Always make sure you consult a medical professional if you have any back pain. Look for second and third opinions too, to be extra sure you know the cause of your problem. This will help you figure out which route is the best to go down for curing pain.

Usually you are giving quite a bit of warning before surgery and this gives you a lot of time to think about how it might go. I was speaking to a friend of mine, an excellent specialist in colon and rectal surgery called Lisa Marie Cannon, I was due to go in to have my appendix removed and I had few fears before going under the knife. She gave me some great tips and advice which allayed my fears and everything ended up going just fine. If you are due to have some surgery then here are some tips for how to prepare.

Don’t Google Horror Stories

The truth of the matter is that we have some absolutely outstanding doctors in the World who perform amazing things and 99.9% of surgeries work out well. The trouble with Google is that the 99.9% that have no problems have little reason to get online and talk about how well their surgery went and naturally those that are in the 0.1% wish to share their terrible experience online. Do yourself a favor and avoid these horror stories, they are a rarity and reading them will just give you more fear.

Talk With People Who’ve Been Through It

If you have friends family members or colleagues who have had a similar operation to you then talk to them about their experience, this way you can get a full first hand account of what your procedure will look like, how you will feel and what to expect. Speaking a doctor will naturally help to allay your fears but talking to someone who has been on the other end of the operating table will help to calm you down further.

Follow Instructions to a Tee

Your doctor may give you some instructions to follow before your operation, perhaps not to eat anything for 24 hours beforehand, or to avoid liquids before the operation and it is essential that you follow these instructions to the letter. The doctors don’t give out these instructions just because they feel like it, it is to make their job easier by clearing organs or tubes that will enable them to perform the surgery better. Whatever the doctor says, you should do it.

Try to Take Your Mind Off It

On the days leading up to your operation try to take your mind off it, you could throw yourself into work or ask your friends to do something with you. Whatever it takes to stop you thinking about your surgery for a little while you should do, it will leave you more relaxed and calm about what is about to happen. You shouldn’t worry about things you cannot change, it is important that you put your faith in the doctors and just concentrate on staying calm.
