The Rolling Stones opened their North American 50 and Counting tour in Los Angeles on Friday in a packed house, but only after websites slashed ticket prices and the band released additional cheap seats at the last minute.

The 17-date tour is the Rolling Stones’ biggest in six years and follows a handful of dates in London, Paris and New York at the end of 2012 marking 50 years since they burst on to the music scene at London’s Marquee Club in 1962.

Only one week ago the band said it was slashing the ticket price of thousands of premium seats to avoid playing to half empty arenas.

“Total disaster, too expensive and no vibe,” a source told The Observer, adding the band could see their $20 million tour fee revised.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are each 69 years old, and Charlie Watts is 71, but they transformed into their younger selves for the night.

Sir Mick Jagger might not hit all the notes he once did, but he still busted out his almost spastic, serpentine dance moves on song after song. He’s impossibly thin, and his spine showed through the light shirt he wore.

Staples Center was packed to capacity for the concert, the first of 17 dates the Stones are set to play throughout the US.

The stage was modeled after the band’s iconic logo, with lips and teeth above the stage and a tongue-shaped platform that extended into the crowd.

A video of famous folks sharing their favorite Rolling Stones memories played before the band took the stage, with Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese, Perry Farrell and others, reminiscing about their favorite tunes.

Actress Cate Blanchett recalled “just how skinny they were”.

“It really, really pisses me off,” she said.

Other videos showed the aging rockers as young men.

Jack Nicholson was among the stars in the audience, and fans welcomed him with a round of applause as he took his seat.

“It was either us or the Lakers, so now you got us,” Mick Jagger said early in the show, referring to the basketball playoffs that forced the band to postpone its opening concert from Thursday to Friday.

“It doesn’t matter to Jack Nicholson because he was coming to both of them,” Mick Jagger continued.

Jack Nicholson wasn’t the only star in the house. Gwen Stefani, wearing long blond hair and a bedazzled Rolling Stones tank top, joined the group onstage to sing Wild Horses.

“I’ve got to get one of these T-shirts,” Mick Jagger said, admiring her top.

Keith Urban played guitar and sang backup on Respectable.

Former Stones member Mick Taylor added guitar to Midnight Rambler.

Keith Richards sang a pair of tunes: Happy and Before They Make Me Run. Mick Jagger also played guitar and harmonica, and came out in a floor-length marabou cape to perform Sympathy for the Devil.

“We first played in LA in 1965,” Mick Jagger said.

“Thank you for keeping on coming to see us.”

The Rolling Stones’ tour continues through June 21.

Stanley Cup Finals 2012

Championship series of the National Hockey League (NHL) 2011–12 season has reached its apogee with 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.

This is the first playoff series between the Eastern Conference playoff champion, New Jersey Devils, and the Western Conference playoff champion, Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings enter the game four as favorites and they could complete a sweep of the Devils at the Staples Center in front of the fans who have been waiting 45 years for this chance to celebrate. For Los Angeles team, this is the second Finals appearance, since a five-game Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Montreal in 1993.

Apparently, sweeps are hard to come by in the Stanley Cup finals. NHL squads looking to finish a series with a 3-0 lead are only 17-19 in game four in the last 10 years.

It is a challenge for the Devils to overtake the Kings, but coming back from three games down to win the Stanley Cup is not quite a rarity. However, the only time a team has rallied from 0-3 down to win the Stanley Cup was in 1942, when Toronto overtook Detroit. This is their first since the 2003 Cup win over Los Angeles’s rival Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in seven games and they have a total of five appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils defeated the Kings in both games in this year’s two-game regular season series, but they are the lowest-seeded team to have home-ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals, a record previously held by the Devils when they won the Cup as a fourth seed in 2000.

This combined seeds of the teams, 14, is the highest ever for a Stanley Cup Finals. Regardless of the outcome, the winner of the series will become the lowest seeded team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup.

Sports betting odds and Stanley Cup Finals

The Los Angeles Kings are -180 (risking $1.80 to win $1) favorites to defeat the New Jersey Devils at the Staples Center and bring the Stanley Cup to the West Coast. In the mean time, the Devils come back at +165. No major profits are expected from betting and the number of people willing to bet is quite low.

In 1993 there was a betting frenzy, bettors wagered on the NHL more than ever, when Wayne Gretzky led the Kings to a Western Conference Championship.

However, it is estimated that a Stanley Cup final game drawn in only a tenth compared to the number of people attracted by a NBA playoff contest.

Before the playoffs started, the Kings odds to win the Cup were 25-to-1, 10-to-1 after defeating the Vancouver Canucks, 3-to-1 after making the Western Conference finals and -170 before the series with New Jersey began. The bettors who have wagered $100 on the Kings in each of their playoff games this year, made a profit of around $1,340.

Odds for gains in single bet are noted in various formats: American format (moneyline odds), European format (decimal odds), UK format (fractional odds). Decimal odds of 2.00 are an even bet. Fractional odds of 1/1 are an even bet. US odds of 100 are an even bet.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West as well as Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel sat front row as LA Lakers played against the Denver Nuggets at the Staples Center.

Showing no signs of an earlier spray tan overload, Kim Kardashian and her new beau Kanye West couldn’t get enough of each other as they giggled through the game, missing most of the action on court.

It’s hardly surprising Kanye West, 34, was engrossed in his lady as she displayed an abundance of cleavage.

It’s usually the cheerleaders that prove distracting for the men in the audience but Kim Kardashian made sure all eyes were on her as she donned a skin ensemble.

The leather-clad star looked rather dressed up in a fitted dress which zipped all the way from top to bottom.

Kim Kardashian, 31, has probably seen far too many basketball games for her liking, her estranged husband Kris Humphries plays for the New Jersey Nets.

Game seven of the Western Conference Quarterfinals during the 2012 NBA playoffs was clearly not exciting enough for her.

Kim Kardashian opted to let her originally tied-back hair down, kick back in her seat and yawn while an equally bored-looking West stared glumly ahead.

They weren’t the only ones unimpressed with the main event.

Recording artist and actor Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel left their chairs with his fiancées mouth agape as if ready to yawn too.

It was only until the musician got involved in a drumming session that things really spiced up for the comfortable and casual pair.

Other stars watching at the famous California venue included actor Jeremy Renner, Modern Family star Julie Bowen and The Lucky One’s Zac Efron.
