John Oliver and his writing team scooped two prizes for satirical show Last Week Tonight. He said a show like his could definitely work in the UK.
The Handmaid’s Tale’s win for best drama series means Hulu has become the first streaming service to win that award, beating the likes of big hitters Netflix and Amazon.
Bruce Miller – who won two trophies as the show’s writer and executive producer – thanked author Margaret Atwood, “who created this world for all of us”. The show is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel.
In the limited series categories, HBO’s Big Little Lies won best lead actress, (Nicole Kidman), supporting actress (Laura Dern), supporting actor (Alexander Skarsgard), director (Jean-Marc Vallee) and best limited series.
Accepting the award for best limited series, Nicole Kidman said: “The power of television has astounded us, you allowed us into your living rooms… but as much as the show has the entertainment value, it’s about the issues.”
The series, which deals with themes such as domestic violence, also stars Reese Witherspoon, who encouraged the TV industry to provide “more great roles for women”.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won best actress in a comedy series for Veep for the sixth year in a row – breaking the record for the most Emmys won by a lead actor for the same role.
Veep, which was created by Armando Iannucci, also won one of the night’s top prizes for best comedy series.
Sterling K. Brown’s win for best lead actor in a drama series marked the first time an African-American actor had won in the category in almost 20 years.
He continued his acceptance speech in the press room after being cut off on the main stage.
Host Stephen Colbert and several of the winners made political references on stage.
“At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy,” said Alec Baldwin as he collected his prize for supporting actor in a comedy series, mocking Donald Trump’s frustration at never having won for The Apprentice.
Alec Baldwin regularly portrays Donald Trump on comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, which won four awards including best variety sketch series and best supporting actress in a comedy series for Kate McKinnon.
Several high-profile series failed to live up to expectations, including Westworld and Stranger Things, which both went home empty-handed.
Game of Thrones, a big winner at previous Emmys, was not eligible this year because episodes from its last series didn’t air during the Emmys eligibility window.
Likewise, Twin Peaks will have to wait until 2018 to be considered.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are to star in Big Little Lies TV series by Ally McBeal writer David E. Kelley.
Based on the book Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, it tells of three mothers with children in nursery school who get caught up in a murder mystery.
The actresses will play two of those women, whose seemingly perfect lives unravel during a school fundraiser.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will also co-executive produce alongside David E. Kelley.
The third role has yet to be cast.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman’s respective production companies, Pacific Standard and Blossom Films, had originally optioned the rights to the Australian author’s book earlier this year as a feature film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy drama is being shopped to US cable networks and streaming services like Netflix as a “limited series”.
Although it could run as a one-off, a limited series still offers the opportunity for a show to be renewed for further episodes if it goes down well with viewers, like CBS sci-fi drama Under The Dome.
Reese Witherspoon last appeared on TV in 2000 in sitcom Friends, guest-starring as Jennifer Aniston’s on-screen sister Jill. She has also voiced characters in animated series King of the Hill and The Simpsons.
Nicole Kidman appeared in a number of Australian TV series at the start of her career including A Country Practice and Five Mile Creek.
She starred in TV movie Hemingway and Gellhorn alongside Clive Owen in 2012, which earned her a best actress Golden Globe nomination.

Grace of Monaco – the Grace Kelly biopic which stars Nicole Kidman – has been chosen to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Early reviews of Grace of Monaco have slammed the film, with one describing it as “a timeless camp classic”.
Set in the 1960s, Olivier Dahan’s film focuses on the early years of Grace Kelly’s years as a princess when she was tempted to return to Hollywood by an offer from Alfred Hitchcock.

Tim Roth plays her husband, Prince Rainier III, with Robert Lindsay, Spain’s Paz Vega and Derek Jacobi filling other roles.
The film has been criticized by the royal family of Monaco, with Princess Stephanie of Monaco saying the film about her parents as inaccurate.
According to reports, Olivier Dahan also clashed over the final cut with the Weinstein Co, which is distributing the film in North America.
There are 18 films in competition for the top prize, the Palme d’Or, which will be handed out along with other prizes on May 24.
British hopes for the prize are led by directors Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.
Animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2 will screen out of competition.
This year’s Un Certain Regard section of the competition will feature the directorial debut of Hollywood star Ryan Gosling.
Christina Hendricks and Matt Smith are among the cast of Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, a dark fantasy formerly known as How to Catch a Monster.
Cannes Film Festival will close with a 50th anniversary screening of a restored print of Sergio Leone’s 1964 spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars, hosted by director Quentin Tarantino.
The nearly 8-year marriage of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban is on the rocks because of distance, her ostensible Botox use and his “flirtations”, claims Star magazine.

“He’s groveling,” contends the source.
“He told her that he wants to put their family first and get their marriage back on track.”
While it’s been close to a year since Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban posed together on the red carpet, they were spotted in Sydney last week with daughters Sunday, 5, and Faith, 3.
Just days ago, Keith Urban praised Nicole Kidman’s ability to balance her busy career and their home life, calling her “an amazing wife and mother”.
Princess Grace of Monaco biopic – Grace of Monaco – starring Nicole Kidman, has been pulled from release in the US by its distributor The Weinstein Co.
The company has given no explanation for its decision to hold back the film, which was due out on March 14.
Grace of Monaco original November release was delayed because it was deemed not ready for cinema screens.
Director Olivier Dahan has previously claimed that he was at odds with Harvey Weinstein over the final cut.
In his interview with French newspaper Liberation, translated and reproduced in The Guardian, Olivier Dahan said: “What’s complicated at the moment is ensuring that you, the critics, can review my version of the film and not that of somebody else.
“It’s not over yet. I haven’t given up.”

The Weinstein Co. has not responded to Olivier Dahan’s claims.
The film-maker’s previous work includes Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose, which won Marion Cotillard a best actress statuette at the Academy Awards.
The original November release date was put in place so the film would be eligible for the Oscars.
The script of Grace of Monaco has been criticized by the Monaco royal family, who said it contained “major historical untruths and a series of purely fictional scenes”.
“The Princely family wishes to emphasize that this film is by no means a biopic,” the Monaco royal family statement added.
Grace Of Monaco release date has been delayed until 2014, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The movie was due for release in November 2013, making it eligible for next year’s Oscars.
In the film, Nicole Kidman plays Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly known as movie star Grace Kelly, during a crisis in her marriage to Prince Rainier III.
Grace Of Monaco release date has been delayed until 2014
Director Olivier Dahan previously coaxed an Oscar-winning performance out of Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. The new film co-stars Tim Roth, Frank Langella and Derek Jacobi.
The movie has already been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where Nicole Kidman was serving on the festival jury.
But it has been met with some resistance by Prince Albert II of Monaco, who criticized the film for being historically inaccurate.
In a statement released earlier this year, Prince Albert and his sisters said Grace Of Monaco contained “major historical untruths and a series of purely fictional scenes”.
“The Princely family wishes to emphasize that this film is by no means a biopic,” the statement said.
Nicole Kidman shows her playful side as she is staring in a commercial for Melbourne-based Swisse Wellness Vitamins.
Nicole Kidman, 45, is seen picking herbs from the garden while playfully dance-kicking to an up tempo guitar track – geared toward projecting an idealized vision of healthy living.
In the slow-moving montage, Nicole Kidman can be seen eating a low glycemic green apple as she sits in an idyllic vegetable garden in the countryside.
She is later depicted toting a basket full of garden herbs, and at one point even carries around a bunch of freshly dug up carrots still sporting their green stalks.
Underscoring the stream of dreamy images was not only the aforementioned guitar track but a gentle cadence metered out by a hand clapping.
The 30 second spot relies heavily on Nicole Kidman’s ability to convey a better, healthier, life – made possible by proper supplementation.
And the vitamin brand could not have chosen a more vibrant and carefree-seeming ambassador.

Kidman was the picture of glowing health and effortless joy as she pranced around the well-groomed garden – at times playing just like a child in the lush wonderland.
She has almost magically maintained an enviably youthful appearance, which may be due to a daily routine of vitamin ingestion.
Adorned in pink shorts and cowboy boots Nicole Kidman shook out her long blonde hair in various snippets of spontaneous dancing.
She even demonstrated a karate move in the pathway between an herb plot and a row of sunflowers.
Discussing her partnership with Swisse, Nicole Kidman said: “I joined Swisse because I wanted to help bring awareness to the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in a busy, often stressful world.”
“I love feeling healthy and fit. They are wonderful attributes of the Australian way of life – and I am a very proud Australian.”
Swisse CEO Radek Sali stated that the vitamin seller was “absolutely thrilled” to have Nicole Kidman as their official ambassador.
Meanwhile, Swisse, according to the Chicago Tribune, has big plans for what Nicole Kidman can do for them and are banking on her to help them reach a projected goal of $50 million in U.S. sales in the first half of 2013.
And even more astonishingly, Swisse expect to rake in $500 million annually by 2015 through products ranging from skin and hair care to multivitamins.
The Melbourne based company began carrying their health products in U.S. pharmacy chain Walgreens in February.

Prince Albert II of Monaco has criticized the upcoming Hollywood film Grace of Monaco about his late mother, Grace Kelly, saying it is historically inaccurate.
Prince Albert and his sisters released a statement after producers told a French magazine the Palace had supported the film, starring Nicole Kidman.
The Palace said the film contained “major historical untruths and a series of purely fictional scenes”.
The film, titled Grace of Monaco, is due for release next year.
“The Princely family wishes to emphasize that this film is by no means a biopic,” the statement said.
“It recounts one rewritten and needlessly <<glamorized>> page in the history of the Principality of Monaco and its family.”
The film follows the High Society actress in 1962 after she married Prince Rainier III, becoming Princess Grace.
It is said to focus on a six-month period when Monaco was in a heated tax dispute with France and director Alfred Hitchcock offered the former actress a chance to return to acting.
Prince Albert II of Monaco has criticized the upcoming Hollywood film Grace of Monaco about his late mother, Grace Kelly, saying it is historically inaccurate
The Palace said it had been “surprised” when it received the script for the film, as it had “in no way been associated with this project”.
It added it had submitted to producers a number of requests for changes, however they were not all taken into consideration.
“The Palace of Monaco cannot accept that the producers of this film imply they have received Their Highnesses’ support in any way whatsoever, since this is not the case,” the statement concluded.
The film’s producer, Pierre-Ange Le Pogam, told AFP the production was meant to be a work of fiction.
“The palace was aware of the script and made requests for changes. We took most of their remarks into account, but not all,” he said.
“The film is not intended to tell the true story of the principality,” he added.
Actress Nicole Kidman has opened up about her role in Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut, in which she starred with her then-husband Tom Cruise.
In an article for The Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman says she had to be “coaxed” into doing the kinky sex scenes with Tom Cruise.
Nicole Kidman – now a mother of two with husband Keith Urban – says she struggled with some of the sexual aspects of the movie – and revealed some of the more extreme footage was left on the cutting room floor.
The actress described how Stanley Kubrick had to “coax” her into some of the sexuality in the film in the beginning, but says she never felt it was “exploitive or unintelligent”.
Nicole Kidman wrote: “He [Stanley Kubrick] was very different with women than he was with men. He has daughters, so he was very paternal with me.”
She explained how the director tried to base the sexual thriller about a troubled married couple on her real-life relationship with Tom Cruise.
Nicole Kidman concedes he effectively failed in getting them to do so – saying while they realized that was his intention, the characters they played were “not really us”.
She also denied that the 1999 film contributed to the demise of her marriage to Tom Cruise. The couple divorced just two years after the movie was released.
Nicole Kidman explained how Stanley Kubrick tried to base Eyes Wide Shut about a troubled married couple on her real-life relationship with Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman writes: “People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage – but I don’t really think it was.
“Tom and I were close then, and it was very much the three of us.”
Explaining how Stanley Kubrick tried to base the characters, Alice and Bill Harford, on her marriage to Tom Cruise, she explained: “Onscreen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality.
“That was Stanley: He used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life. Which we weren’t oblivious to, but obviously it wasn’t us.
“We both decided to dedicate ourselves to a great filmmaker and artist.”
Nicole Kidman admits, though, that not even she really fully understands the film, even to this day.
She writes: “People have asked me if Stanley ever told us what Eyes Wide Shut was about – and the answer is no. He didn’t believe in interpretation.”
Stanley Kubrick died aged 70 in March 1999, just four days after screening his final version of the film.
The actress also revealed she almost called him the night before his death, recalling how she was concerned over how frail he was.
Nicole Kidman went on: “If I were more intuitive I would have realized that he was not well. One of the worst things… was, I was going to call him and I didn’t. Instead I got a phone call [the next day] saying Stanley was dead. It was one of my great regrets that I didn’t call him that night.”
Nicole Kidman is taking on one of the most high-profile roles of her career in forthcoming drama, Grace of Monaco.
The actress was pictured for the first time on set Tuesday, making every effort to emulate the regal Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco.
Nicole Kidman, who is currently filming the movie in Menton, France, was styled in a pale yellow tent coat, strings of pearls adorning her collar.
Her cropped blonde locks were swept up into soft curls, mimicking the late Hollywood actress’ famous hairstyle.
Accompanied by an assistant, Nicole Kidman was shielded from the sun by an umbrella on her way to set.

Assistants were later seen wrapping her locks in a polka-dot headscarf, and sliding winged sunglasses onto her face, making for a trademark look often worn by the late Hollywood star.
Grace of Monaco, which recently began lensing, tells the story of Grace Kelly’s involvement with Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and France’s Charles De Gaulle dispute over tax laws in the early 1960s.
Helmed by La Vie en Rose director Olivier Dahn, and with a reported $30 million budget, the film co-stars Tim Roth, Parker Posey, and Milo Ventimiglia.
Grace of Monaco is scheduled for release in 2014.
Nicole Kidman recently opened up about the conflicting aspects of her personality, revealing to Harper’s Bazaar she’s only recently become more comfortable in front of the camera.
“I was shy. Deeply shy,” she said of her early career, then married to Tom Cruise.
“I didn’t feel comfortable at all. But I felt very comfortable at home.”
Things have changed somewhat, however, since she’s moved on with her husband, country music star Keith Urban.
“All of that other stuff becomes less important [as you get older],” she said.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, who married in 2006, share two daughters, Sunday and Faith.
Grace Kelly is one of the silver screen’s greatest icons.
But it seems Nicole Kidman will be able to pull off the difficult task of playing her in a new Grace Kelly biopic.
Nicole Kidman, 45, looks sensational in a portrait where she has the Princess of Monaco’s glamorous style down to perfection.
The Australian actress wears the Oscar-winning star’s swept back hairstyle, and a classically elegant gown in the image from Grace of Monaco.
And Nicole Kidman should have the acting chops to pull of such a difficult role too, as she won an Academy Award herself for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in 2002’s The Hours.
Nicole Kidman looks sensational in a portrait where she has the Princess of Monaco’s glamorous style down to perfection
The film is not quite a classic biopic however, as it follows Grace Kelly’s personal story during an intriguing time in the principality’s history in 1962.
It focuses on a six-month period in which the new Princess of Monaco maneuvered behind the scenes in an effort to save the city-state from a coup.
It has a heavyweight cast which includes Tim Roth, Parker Posey, and Milo Ventimiglia, and is directed by La Vie en Rose favorite Olivier Dahn.
Nicole Kidman’s classically elegant look is certainly a million miles away from her appearance in The Paperboy, which has just been released in cinemas.
She plays wild character Charlotte Bless, which follows a reporter [Matthew McConaughey] and his younger brother [Zac Efron] as they investigate a murder to exonerate a man on death row.
Nicole Kidman ends up urinating on Zac Efron after his character has an encounter with a jellyfish, and also participates in some sex scenes.
The Church of Scientology was responsible for “turning Tom Cruise’s children against their mother”, his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, according to new reports.
The claims were made in an excerpt from a controversial article about Scientology which is due to be published in Vanity Fair.
The allegations have been strongly rejected by a Scientology spokesman, which labelled the article “hogwash”.
The new report, published in Us Magazine, claims the home-schooled children, Bella and Connor Cruise, were sent on a course to teach them to recognize “suppressive persons”, such as their adoptive mother.
The article includes an interview with John Brousseau, who was a Scientologist for 32 years and is a former brother-in-law to the church leader David Miscavige.
Us Magazine claims that Bella and Connor Cruise were sent on a course to teach them to recognize “suppressive persons”, such as their adoptive mother Nicole Kidman
John Brousseau told the magazine: “They took a course, PTS/SP, Potential Trouble Source/Suppressive Person, for persons connected in their lives who are an SP.”
And he added: “[Bella and Connor] whispered to me, <<JB, Nicole is an SP! Our mom’s an SP – we hate going and seeing her>>.”
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise divorced in 2001. During their marriage they adopted two children together, Connor, now 17, and Bella, 19.
An earlier excerpt from the report, issued last week, claimed Scientology leaders had auditioned potential brides for Tom Cruise before he met and decided to marry his third wife Katie Holmes.
This was roundly denied by the church in a statement.
“The entire story is hogwash,” they said.
“There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the Church to find a bride (audition or otherwise) for any member of the Church. Never.
“The allegation and entire premise of the Vanity Fair article is totally false.
“Like clockwork, stories about this <<phantom>> audition surface in the tabloids every few months.
“We have been denying this ridiculous tale now since it first appeared in print FOUR years ago.”
A spokesman for Tom Cruise also poured cold water on the article, saying: “Lies in a different font are still lies – designed to sell magazines.”
Tom Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields has denied claims that the Church of Scientology embarked on a long-term “auditioning” process to find the actor a new partner, after his 2001 divorce from Nicole Kidman.
Bert Fields called a Vanity Fair report, previewed on the magazine’s website, “long, boring and false”.
He said it was “a rehash of tired old lies” run in the supermarket tabloids.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year.
The article, written for October’s edition of Vanity Fair, claimed the top-secret project was led by Shelly Miscaviage, the wife of Scientology leader David, in 2004.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year
Special correspondent Maureen Orth said she was told by “several sources” that actresses were quizzed by fellow Scientologists to find a suitable partner for Cruise, one of the organization’s most prominent proponents.
Actress Nazanin Boniadi, who was born in Iran and raised in the UK, told the magazine she was approached in 2004 and “audited”, before being selected to date Tom Cruise.
The article alleges their first date was conducted “with an entourage of Scientology aides”, but the relationship faltered after a few months and ended in 2005.
The Church of Scientology has spoken out against the feature in a statement.
“There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the church to find a bride (via audition or otherwise) for any member of the church. Never.”
It claimed the magazine relied on a small group of “anti-Scientologists” for information, who had “shamelessly exploited Tom Cruise’s divorce by spreading false and invented tabloid stories.”
Vanity Fair says it stands by the story and has denied claims that it paid its sources.
Maureen Orth is a long-time contributor to the magazine, who has interviewed Vladimir Putin and Margaret Thatcher, as well as writing investigative articles about the allegations of sexual abuse levelled against pop star Michael Jackson.
Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, with whom he has a daughter Suri, in an Italian castle in November 2006.
Katie Holmes filed for divorce at the end of June this year and the couple announced they had agreed a settlement several weeks later.
Actress Nicole Kidman attended the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games and she looked younger than ever.
Yesterday, Nicole Kidman was guest of honor at the private opening of Omega House, the watchmaker’s official residence during the London 2012 Olympic Games, and she was dressed to impress.
Nicole Kidman – who is a brand ambassador for the Swiss company – looked demure in a sleeveless black dress with black lace up sandals.
The actress appeared years younger than 45 with her hair in soft waves to her shoulders and sported minimal make-up.
Nicole Kidman obviously wore one of the famous watches but apart from dazzling earrings and her wedding ring, she wore no other jewellery.
Her husband Keith Urban was at the Olympics launch with her last night, where the excited actress posted pictures on her Facebook account and shared her enjoyment with her fans.

It was a return to the spotlight for the star who has tried to stay out of the public eye to avoid the drama surrounding her former husband’s latest split.
Nicole Kidman refused to get involved in the divorce drama unfurling between Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes, even though there are echoes of her 2001 split with the now 50-year-old movie star.
Not least 33-year-old Katie Holmes’ decision to file for sole custody of the couple’s daughter Suri, six, after Nicole Kidman lost primary residence of her two adopted children with Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor.
However, Nicole Kidman, who was married to Tom Cruise for nearly 10 years before the actor filed for divorce, even steered clear of close friends in recent weeks to avoid being drawn on the subject.
“Nicole won’t talk, wants her privacy, wants to be left out of this and they [she and Tom Cruise] don’t speak much,” an insider told RadarOnline.com. “Communication between her and Tom is very limited.”
Nicole Kidman, who was said to be shocked when Tom Cruise filed for divorce in 2001 – only two months after they renewed their vows – kept a low profile immediately after the Holmes filed for divorce.
“Nicole really does not want to be dragged into this or say anything to anyone,” continued the source.
“At some point though, she will probably be forced to say something, and she will most likely support Tom for the sake of their children.”
According to one report, after the dissolution of their marriage, members of the Church of Scientology turned Isabella and Connor Cruise against Nicole Kidman, calling her a “sociopath” and the actress has only recently reunited with her adopted daughter.
“I love mom,” Isabella Cruise recently told Australia’s New Idea magazine. “She’s my mom. She’s great. I see her sometimes [in Nashville] and I speak to her.”
Tom Cruise has hired Dennis Wasser, the same lawyer who represented him for his divorce from Nicole Kidman.

Tom Cruise’s adopted son “didn’t appear to pay any attention to the scantily-clad dancers near him on the stage,” US Weekly reports.
“He was totally consumed by his DJ set.”
In reality, says the magazine, Connor Cruise has been disoriented by the quick break-up of his father, Tom Cruise and the woman who has been raising him for years – Katie Holmes.
“Connor is actually really upset,” US quotes an “insider” as saying.
“Katie was practically his mom. He called her mom, too.”

Connor Cruise, 17, and his sister Isabella, 19, were both adopted as babies by Tom Cruise while he was married to former wife, Nicole Kidman.
After their divorce, Nicole Kidman fled to Nashville with new husband, Keith Urban, and largely left the rearing of the couple to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have been together for eight years and have a six-year-old daughter, Suri.
During that time, Katie Holmes also took on the mothering role to the growing Connor and Isabella Cruise and was a regular at their school functions and sports games.

Known as DJ C-Squared, it was a stoic Connor Cruise who spun last night from a Mac computer.
“He was very focused on the screen the entire time,” the eyewitness added.
In between sets, he talked to pals sitting with him in the DJ booth.
Connor Cruise’s DJ gig came a day after he visited newly single dad Tom on the Mammoth Lakes, California set of his film, Oblivion.
Father and son seemed very free with one another and smiled easily at one another.
Eileen Berlin, Tom Cruise’s former personal manager, became his surrogate mother and mentor when he was on the cusp of fame and she says that she knew from the start that his relationship with Katie Holmes was doomed.
Breaking her silence for the first time since she signed the actor as her client soon after his 18th birthday, Eileen Berlin said last week that she blamed Tom Cruise’s pent-up anger created by an abusive childhood for his three broken marriages.
As a child, the star, born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, suffered from dyslexia, was bullied by his peers, and beaten and then abandoned by his father.
At 15, Tom Cruise entered a seminary, intending to become a priest.
Eileen Berlin, now 77, ran a New York film and theatrical management agency with her late husband and met Tom Cruise some three years later, after he dropped his surname and made acting his calling instead.
As a child, Tom Cruise suffered from dyslexia, was bullied by his peers, and beaten and then abandoned by his father
“His mom had asked him to leave her house, I think because he had had a teenage drinking problem,” Eileen Berlin said.
“She had remarried and he harbored a lot of anger and resentment at his natural father, who had deserted him and his three sisters.
“Every time I saw him, he would be with a girl, but I never saw him with the same girl twice. It was almost like he had to prove he was wanted – or maybe he wanted to feel loved.
“I wasn’t surprised Katie broke up with him. I was just surprised it lasted as long as it did. I was surprised when he married his first wife, Mimi Rogers, and I was surprised it lasted ten years a second time, with Nicole Kidman.
“Tom was moody and would get angry in a snap of your fingers. It was like something was smoldering and it would boil up and explode.”
Carrying a guitar and a duffle bag stuffed with a few possessions, Tom Cruise moved into the manager’s Manhattan apartment for three months after he signed up with her company. In 1981, Tom Cruise signed the contract for his breakthrough action film, Taps.
Eileen Berlin arranged for him to pose for publicity portraits. In one of them, dressed in tight jeans and a tank top, he strikes a belligerent pose and flexes his muscles but in others, he smiles with innocent charm.
“By the time I met him, he had decided he could be a star,” she said.
“He wanted to be treated like a star and he acted like a star. He would walk around my house in a little G-string strap and nothing else. I had a mirrored wall and he would stand in front of it, flexing his biceps and admiring himself.
“I was a bit embarrassed but he liked to show off his body. He had a great pride in it.”
Though he could be moody, the young lodger also had a charming side. Eileen Berlin said: “He was sweet, respectful and mannerly to a fault. He always addressed me as <<ma’am>> and my husband as <<sir>>. But he was so private, he couldn’t show his true feelings. You would get so far and he would close down. I am sure his wives would have come up against that barrier.”
“He would channel his rage into his roles,” Eileen Berlin said.
“For Taps, he locked himself in the closet. He said he thought about someone raping his sister before he filmed a scene where he blasted a machine gun. Once, my husband and I took him out for lunch while they were on location and a waitress said, <<Are you one of the actors?>> Tom said to us, <<Please tell her not to ask me any questions. I’m still in character>>.”
Another time, a row broke out when Eileen Berlin gave him a surprise birthday present – an album in which she had pasted photos of him from fan magazines. Eileen Berlin said: “He screamed, <<I didn’t want to be in the teen mags>>. He threw the album hard at me and it hit me on the cheek.”
Their professional relationship ended in 1983 but they stayed in touch and during a subsequent dinner, Tom Cruise mentioned the Church of Scientology, crediting it with helping him overcome his childhood learning disorder.
Eileen Berlin says she started to receive invitations to church events.
“I think Tom was the perfect candidate for Scientology,” she said.
“He didn’t believe in therapy but he obviously needed help. He just couldn’t have a relationship and I think that was because you have to open yourself up and he’d been too hurt by his father to do that.
“The world sees this good-looking guy, worth millions. I still just see this little boy.”
Tom Cruise quietly returned to Los Angeles, following a filming spell in Iceland, to spend time with adopted teenage children Connor and Isabella, from his marriage with ex Nicole Kidman.
Tom Cruise, who turned 50 yesterday, was expecting friends and family – including estranged wife Katie Holmes and his only biological child Suri – to flock to him in New York where they lived in an apartment together.
However, after Katie Holmes made a shock decision to file divorce papers last Friday, the powerful king and queen of A-list stardom have now gone their separate ways.
This is believed to be the last picture of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise together, taken in Iceland on June 16
A source told People: “The plan was to spend his birthday with Katie and Suri (in New York City).
“Then they were going to fly to California where he is going to finish Oblivion and spend time there.”
Connor Cruise, 17, openly showed support for his father by tweeting this week: “#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever.”
The insider added: “They were all together, and one of the reasons he came back to California was that he had to take his family back to LA (in the Burbank area).”
To dampen Tom Cruise’s spirits further, is has been reported that the air between the pair is turning sour as Katie Holmes’ lawyers are said to have filed for an emergency custody and child support hearing in New York, which will see the pair come face to face for the first time since their split.
Katie Holmes, 33, has requested sole legal custody and primary physical custody of six-year-old Suri.
However, Katie Holmes seems to have been empowered by the move, venturing out for ice-cream with Suri last night with a smile painted on her face and telling reporters: “I’m alright.”
A hearing on the filing, called an emergent application, has been set for July 17, reports Radar.
It looks like Tom Cruise’s unlucky number is 33 as all three of his ex-wives called it quits when they reached that very same age.
Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes were all in their early thirties when their marriages to Tom Cruise took a turn for the worse.
Fans of Tom Cruise searched for a meaning, some postulating that the number 33 is related somehow to his religion, Scientology.
Tom Cruise married Mimi Rogers when she was 31 in May of 1987. She was 33 when they broke up in 1990.
In his second marriage to Nicole Kidman, the actors stayed together for ten years. They split in 2001, when she was 33.
His wedding with Katie Holmes was in 2006 when she was 28 and last week, when she filed for divorce, she had reached the ripe old age of 33.

In each case, divorce proceedings began when the wives were 33 and concluded when they were 34.
Perez Hilton dug deep into Scientology to find out what, if any importance there is to the number 33. Turns out, the first Church of Scientology was established in Phoenix, Arizona, which lies on the 33rd parallel.
In numerology, the number 33 is for the “master teacher” represented by the Archangel Michael. The number 33 is associated with the power of healing through love; people with the life path number 33 are totally selfless and love unconditionally.
Regardless of the positive connotations, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s divorce will not be recognized by the church of Scientology, according to church documents.
There is a belief in the church of Scientology that marital problems come from “withholds” or “overts” – undiscussed issues or problems.
Katie Holmes is believed to have blind-sided Tom Cruise by initiating divorce proceedings and seeking sole custody of their daughter Suri.
With sole custody of Suri, Katie Holmes would be able to remove her daughter from the Church of Scientology despite her husband’s enthusiasm for it.
The estranged couple has been raising Suri in accordance with the doctrine of the Church of Scientology – treating her as an adult, free to make her own decisions.
“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” a spokesperson for Tom Cruise said.
Katie Holmes cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause to the split.

Isabella Cruise, 19, has revealed she has reunited with her adoptive mother Nicole Kidman.

In an interview with New Idea magazine, Isabella rubbished allegations that she does not speak to Nicole Kidman.

She added: “We’re a very close family. I love all of our family.”

The new claims are in stark contrast to what Nicole Kidman, who is currently filming The Railway Man, once said about both her adopted children back in 2007.
Nicole Kidman told GMTV: “My kids don’t call me mommy, they don’t even call me mom. They call me Nicole, which I hate and tell them off for it.”
It was also widely reported at the time that Tom Cruise’s current wife Katie Holmes admitted Connor and Isabella called her “Mom” after just two years in their lives.
Katie Holmes said: “His first two children are incredible, really smart and kind. They call me Mom.”
Isabella Cruise decided to stay in her father’s Beverly Hills mansion when her parents divorced in 2001, but she has now moved into a apartment with her boyfriend.
She is rumored to be living in a small apartment with Eddie Frencher in Downtown Los Angeles’ notorious Skid row district.
They are both followers of Scientology and she unashamedly told the magazine: “We are very proud to be Scientologists.”
Isabella Cruise and Eddie Frencher, 23, made their public debut at her brother Connor’s birthday party in January.
They have been dating for some time but kept their relationship under wraps for months.
