The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival is getting under way in the south of France.

This year’s festival is being held from May 13 to 24.

Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman are among the notables due to attend.

Other stars, among them Cate Blanchett and Matthew McConaughey, are expected to appear during the 12-day event.

Sienna Miller and Jake Gyllenhaal will sit on a competition jury headed by sibling duo Joel and Ethan Coen.

Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off later with a gala screening of French drama La Tete Haute (Standing Tall).

France is well-represented in the race for the festival’s top prize, making up five of the 19 Palme d’Or entries.

Yet this year’s line-up has been criticized for including a number of films by European film-makers that feature both Hollywood stars and English-language dialogue.Cannes Film Festival 2015

They include Youth, from Italy’s Paolo Sorrentino, which stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as old friends vacationing in the Alps.

Another contentious title is The Lobster, from Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos, which was shot in Dublin and has a cast headed by Colin Farrell.

A more welcomed development this year is the festival’s perceived championing of female film-makers.

La Tete Haute director Emmanuelle Bercot is only the second woman to win the coveted opening night slot since the festival began in 1946.

Director Agnes Varda, who made her name during the French New Wave of the 1960s, will become the first woman to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.

Natalie Portman, meanwhile, is presenting a special screening of her feature directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, about the early years of Israel.

Hotly anticipated titles this year include a new film version of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender in the title role.

Also included in the competition line-up is Todd Haynes’ Carol, in which Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara play lovers in 1950s New York.

Films screening out of competition include Woody Allen’s latest, Irrational Man, and Amy, a documentary about Amy Winehouse that has been called “misleading” by the late singer’s father.

Mad Max: Fury Road will also have a special screening on May 14, the same day the latest installment in the apocalyptic action series opens in cinemas.

An advert for mascara by Christian Dior starring Natalie Portman has been banned for misleading women into thinking it would give them “lusher lashes”.

The magazine advertisement, showing Natalie Portman staring into the camera with well defined eyelashes, was challenged by rivals L’Oreal who said the photo exaggerated the effects of the mascara.

The ad boasts “the miracle of a nano brush for an unrivaled lash creator effect. It delivers spectacular volume-multiplying effect, lash by lash”.

Dior admitted that the image had been digitally retouched, saying it was done to “increase the length and curve of a number of lashes” as some of the actresses eyelashes were “missing or damaged” in the original photo.

They said that they believed the “retouching” was minimal.

Bosses at the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), however, banned the ad from being used again, saying it was misleading and exaggerated the effects of the mascara.

This is not the first ad to be barred by the ASA, who act as the UK’s independent regulator of all media.

ASA banned two Channel 4 ads for My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding earlier this month for being offensive, and have previously banned ads by Virgin media, Homebase and Lancome skin care.

They stated about the Dior advert that: “The ASA understood that the digital retouching was intended to separate/increase the length and curve of a number of Natalie Portman’s lashes to replace/fill a number of missing or damaged lashes, to increase the thickness and volume of a number of her natural lashes and, primarily, to stylistically lengthen and curve her lashes.

“We noted that the ad had therefore used post-production retouching on an area – namely the eyelashes – which was directly relevant to the apparent performance of the mascara product being advertised.

“We considered that the ad’s claims <<Lash-multiplying effect volume and care mascara….an unrivalled lash creator effect>> and <<delivers spectacular volume-multiplying effect, lash by lash>>, particularly in conjunction with the image of Natalie Portman’s eyelashes, would be understood to mean that the mascara could lengthen the lashes, as well as separate them, increase their thickness and volume, and generally enhance lash appearance.”

It added: “We had not seen evidence of the product’s effects on Natalie Portman’s lashes where there had not been any post-production retouching and therefore considered we were unable to assess the effects of the post-production work on the image featured in the ad.

“We were concerned that we had not seen evidence that the visual representation of the product’s effects on Natalie Portman’s lashes, as featured in the ad, could be achieved through use of the product only, particularly as we understood that post-production retouching on the lash area had taken place.

“Because we considered that we had not seen sufficient evidence to show that the post-production retouching on Natalie Portman’s lashes in the ad did not exaggerate the likely effects of the product, we concluded the ad was likely to mislead.”

Dior chiefs said it had not received any complaints about the ad from customers and said the ad “did not go beyond the likely consumer expectations of what was achievable with the product”.

They said the advert was a “stylized and aspirational ad intended to convey the luxury image and allure of the Diorshow Mascara” and that “consumers expected images used in ads for beauty products to have used professional styling and photography”.

Dior also said that Natalie Portman’s upper eyelashes were digitally altered, stating: “Digital retouching was nearly exclusively in relation to her upper lashes and was primarily used to separate/increase the length and curve of a number of her lashes and to replace/fill a number of missing or damaged lashes, for a more stylized, uniform and tidy effect.”

It added that eyelashes were “by nature generally fine in appearance and various lashes or elements of lashes could be nearly invisible to the naked eye”.

Natalie Portman may have bared all in her previous campaigns for Christian Dior, but she is covering up in her latest advert for the French fashion house.

Natalie Portman, 31, is the epitome of demure chic in the gorgeous shoot and is seen softly gazing at the camera while wearing a white knitted jumper.

In another shot, the actress is pictured looking especially casual in a simple dark grey top and artfully worn in jeans.

But it’s not all about dressing down for Natalie Portman, in a final stunning image she is seen sitting on a bed wearing a diaphanous pastel pink dress.

The shoot is a stark contrast to her most recent advert for the Diorskin Nude range, where the brunette beauty is pictured lying topless over a chaise lounge.

Natalie Portman also stripped off for her previous advert for Miss Dior Cherie perfume, where she soaks in a tub wearing nothing but her Dior sunglasses.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, the homage to Jean Luc Godard’s 1960s movies, also shows the actress undressing her onscreen lover and kissing him passionately on a bed.

Wearing a black strapless dress the star, smoulders for the camera and poses suggestively with a black bow-tie.

Natalie Portman might look totally at ease in front of the cameras but in a recent interview with InStyle, the actress confessed that she feels as if she never quite succeeds in putting on a perfect public appearance.

“My grandmother believes you don’t leave the house unless you have perfect hair and make-up, so she is always at me for not brushing my hair or not putting on enough make-up,” she said.

“I love Sofia Coppola’s whole aesthetic. She presents herself in a ladylike fashion and has so much personality,” the mother of one-year old boy Aleph added.

That said, Natalie Portman did admit that she never leaves the house without a lipstick: “I keep three lipsticks with me, always, one nude, everyday color, plus a red and a plum for dressing up.”

Natalie Portman couldn’t stop smiling as she was pictured dancing with her new husband Benjamin Millepied and walking around the grounds of the private residence in the Californian coastal town of Big Sur.

Natalie Portman’s elegant Rodarte gown was a stunning yet simple choice, modest with a high neckline, together with a tea-length cocktail hemline and sheer, full-length sleeves.

An insider told In Touch Weekly: “Her dress was stunning, not overly showy or revealing. Very much her own subtle and pretty personal style – she always has a hippie theme, whatever she does.”

The traditional Jewish ceremony, which took place after sundown on Saturday, was an intimate affair with just 60 of the couple’s family and closest friends in attendance.

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied exchanged vows in a Jewish ceremony under a chuppah in front of celebrity guests Diane Sawyer and director husband Mike Nichols, Ivanka Trump, Macaulay Culkin and Rashida Jones.

Having been a strict vegan since 2009, apart from a brief break during her pregnancy with son Aleph, Natalie Portman threw a vegetarian feast before the newlyweds let loose on the dance floor.

The source, who said the DJ played tunes until 2.30am, added: “Natalie looked so happy and was glowing. It was a beautiful day for her and Benjamin to celebrate with those they hold closest.”

Running alongside the Pacific Coast Highway, Big Sur, famous for its links to the Beat poets, is a sparsely populated town where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise from the Pacific Ocean.

Earlier this year a friend told In Touch magazine: “It’s one of Natalie’s favorite places – whenever she needs a break from LA she goes there.

“This wedding is for their closest friends and family. It will be a very relaxed affair. They’re not sending out invites. Natalie may not even buy a new dress.”

Ivanka Trump tweeted pictures of the coastline prior to the ceremony, and one of herself sat at a firepit at the estate, alongside the caption: “Driving to Big Sur with a lunch stop in Carmel. Heaven.”

And after leaving the wedding, she added: “2 weddings on opposite coasts in one weekend! Just landed in NY & am heading straight to ceremony number 2. A lot to celebrate this weekend!”

Natalie Portman, 31, met choreographer Benjamin Millepied, 35, on the set of Black Swan in 2009 and they got engaged in December 2010.

When Natalie Portman won the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan role, she paid tribute to Benjamin Millepied, calling him her “beautiful love” and thanked him for giving her the “most important role of my life”.

Natalie Portman gave birth to their son Aleph in June 2011 and at this year’s Academy Awards there was speculation they had already tied the knot as they both wore bands on their wedding ring fingers.

Macaulay Culkin attended the wedding of Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied in Los Angeles on the weekend, it has been claimed.

Macaulay Culkin, 31, was allegedly present at the pair’s starlight ceremony, days after sensational reports emerged from the National Enquirer that the Home Alone star was a drug addict and “hooked on hillbilly heroin”.

According to Us Weekly, Natalie Portman and Macaulay Culkin have been “friends for years”.

Natalie Portman also co-starred in Black Swan with Macaulay Culkin’s former girlfriend Mila Kunis.

Macaulay Culkin’s trip to the coastal town comes as representatives were forced to issue a fiercely-worded denial over claims the Home Alone star has a $6,000-a-month drug habit this week.
