Lewis Hamilton has won his second World Drivers’ Championship after the 2008 victory in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton, second in qualifying, took the lead at the start and controlled the race, as Mercedes team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg suffered car trouble and finished 14th.
He joins a number of other drivers on two titles, including his great contemporary rival Fernando Alonso. Michael Schumacher is the all-time record holder with seven, while the most successful current driver is Sebastian Vettel on four.
Nico Rosberg, who started on pole, was left struggling by the failure of his hybrid system. With two laps to go, he was told to retire by his engineers at Mercedes but said: “I would like to go to the end.” 
As Lewis Hamilton crossed the line, Prince Harry, attending the race, took to the team radio to say: “Lewis, well done for not making the British public sweat. You are an absolute legend.”
Lewis Hamilton, 29, stood on his car to celebrate after he returned to the pits and then went over to embrace girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger and his family, who had flown in for the race day to support him.
His win was his 11th of the season, compared to Nico Rosberg’s five, and he finished 67 points clear at the top of the title standings.
It was the 33rd win of Lewis Hamilton’s career, moving him clear of his great rival Fernando Alonso into fifth in the all-time list.

Lewis Hamilton has won back the Hungarian Grand Prix title on Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton, 28, dedicated the trophy to his ex-girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, as he continues to show signs that he wants her back.
During a Sky Sports interview, Lewis Hamilton made his emotional tribute: “I feel like, the thought on my mind through the entire race was of someone really special to me. And I want to dedicate it to her.”
Asked by the interviewer if that person was Nicole Scherzinger, 34, he smiled and confirmed her question.
Lewis Hamilton then opened up about how trying it has been since they announced their split at the beginning of July.

“It’s been the toughest couple of months in my life,” Lewis Hamilton confessed.
“So coming in to the race they [his parents] really wanted to lift my spirits keep my focus on and clearly it’s not affecting my driving.
“But it just doesn’t feel the same. A couple of years ago we were here together and I won, so I have great memories.”
However, Lewis Hamilton has had his parents rallying round to keep his spirits up, and help get him race ready for new team Mercedes.
“I’ve been on the phone to my mum this weekend who’s been incredibly supportive,” Lewis Hamilton said following his win.
“My dad’s been calling me, I’ve been talking to my dad a lot the last week and he’s been really supportive and just really trying to keep my spirits.
“And to come here after a real downer for the last few weeks, I really wasn’t expecting [the win].”
This isn’t the first attempt to public reach out to Nicole Scherzinger by Lewis Hamilton, as he wrote on Twitter last week: “If you’ve found that special someone, don’t EVER let them go no matter what!! Nothing in this world is more important.”

X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger and Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton have split after five years together.
Nicole Scherzinger, 34, and Lewis Hamilton, 28, who went public with their romance back in 2007, are believed to have ended their relationship as their busy work schedules meant they just didn’t get to see each other.
A source said: “Nicole is just so heartbroken and completely devastated.”
The sad news comes just a matter of weeks after Lewis Hamilton hinted that he was planning to propose to Nicole Scherzinger.
Lewis Hamilton said: “We’ve been together for five years, which is quite a milestone really. But hopefully in the near future. Maybe before we get to six years.”
Nicole Scherzinger has regularly been seen supporting Hamilton Lewis at his various Grand Prix commitments, but admitted previously she is only there for her beau, rather than knowing anything about the sport as a whole.
She said: “I only go to a Grand Prix to support Lewis. I am in awe of Formula One because there is so much money, technology and talent, but as for the racing, it really is like trying to understand rocket science when I’m there, trackside.

“For me there’s only ever one winner and a lot of people would agree with me on that – Lewis is the best.”
But since recommitting to the X Factor this year, Nicole Scherzinger has been kept busy with auditions in locations including Glasgow, Dublin and London, while Lewis Hamilton has been concentrating on his racing career.
The last time the couple were pictured together was at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 10th.
Since then, Nicole Scherzinger has gone solo at various events including Wimbledon last week and the Summer Music Festival in Rome, Italy, where she put on a stunning performance last week.
Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton met at the European Music Awards in Munich in November 2007, before going public at the Monaco Grand Prix six months later.
In July 2011 there was unconfirmed speculation the couple had become engaged.
Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton briefly split in January 2010 when they had been together for 20 months, before later reconciling.
The couple then split again in late 2011, before giving their relationship another go in early 2012.
Nicole Scherzinger is expected to make an appearance at the X Factor auditions in Cardiff later this week.
McLaren’s Jenson Button won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix as his team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished third.
Jenson Button, who qualified second to his team-mate, beat him into the first corner and pulled away to win.
Lewis Hamilton lost second place to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel after an unlucky break with a safety car, and the German was able to hold him off.
Red Bull’s Mark Webber was fourth, ahead of the surprisingly quick Ferrari of Fernando Alonso.
Williams driver Pastor Maldonado was on course to take a close sixth, but he lost control while chasing Alonso on the last lap and crashed at the Turn Seven kink.
That handed sixth place to Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi. The Japanese won out in a seven-car fight to the flag.

In a chaotic final lap, Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, impressive on his return after two years in rallying, took seventh ahead of the second Sauber of Sergio Perez, the Toro Rosso of Daniel Ricciardo, Force India’s Paul di Resta, Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg, who had been eighth until Maldonado’s crash led to frantic place-swapping.
Jenson Button was serenely unaware of the drama behind him – he was in a league of his own throughout the race after making a better start than Hamilton and passing him down the inside into Turn One.
“As a team it really shows how important the winter is,” said Jenson Button, who kicked off his 2009 championship-winning year with victory in Australian.
“We had a strong winter and qualifying really shows that. It’s nice to come away with a win in the first race of the season.
“Every win means a lot to you.”

Lewis Hamilton, 26, who is 7 years junior to Nicole Scherzinger, decided to end the relationship due to their conflicting work schedules meant they were seeing less and less of each other.
Lewis Hamilton and Nicole Scherzinger – who rose to fame as part of The Pussycat Dolls pop group – had been dating for 4 years.
One of their friends confirmed they split up: “Yes, they’ve split. It’s a real shame because Nicole really tried to make it work.
“They are still very good friends and it was an amicable split, but they just decided it was impossible to keep the relationship going with such conflicting work schedules.”

The sportsman was seen yesterday at an event for his driving team McLaren and a source told he was in “good spirits”.

Recently, speaking of his relation with Nicole Scherzinger Lewis Hamilton said: “We go to the gym together quite often and she goes running with me. She does her own programme and I do mine and it’s pretty cool.”
So far, Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton declined to comment.
