Donald Trump’s running mate Mike Pence has had a narrow escape after his plane slid off the runway while landing in New York City.
The Republican VP candidate told reporters he was fine after the rough touchdown at LaGuardia Airport. No one was injured.
Mike Pence and the other 30 or so passengers were evacuated through the back of the plane. He was coming from a campaign event in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
LaGuardia Airport has been closed until further notice, said officials.
The pilot slammed on the brakes and passengers on the aircraft could smell burning rubber.

Live TV footage showed Mike Pence standing in the rain near the plane among emergency vehicles, talking to police and other officials.
The Iowa governor tweeted: “So thankful everyone on our plane is safe. Grateful for our first responders & the concern & prayers of so many. Back on the trail tomorrow!”
He said mud had splashed on the front windows of the cockpit.
Donald Trump called Mike Pence to check on him after the incident, the campaign said.
“Mr. Trump did reach out to Gov Pence. He’s glad that everyone on board is safe,” Donald Trump spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in an emailed statement.
The Republican nominee was in a motorcade en route to a rally in Geneva, Ohio.
Donald Trump told supporters at his rally about Mike Pence’s plane mishap, saying: “You know, he was in a big accident with a plane.
“The plane skidded off the runway and was pretty close to grave, grave danger, but I just spoke to Mike and he’s fine. He got out. Everybody’s fine.”
Mike Pence canceled a fundraising event that he was to take part in at Trump Tower in Manhattan, and headed to his hotel.
An FAA computer glitch grounded hundreds of flights into and out of New York and Washington on August 15.
The technical glitch, at an air traffic centre in Leesburg, Virginia, caused delays of nearly three hours in some cases.
A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said later that it had resolved the issue.
Planes would be able to take off normally by about 16:00 EDT, the FAA said.
The affected airports are among the busiest in the United States, especially in the summer holiday months.
Among those hit by the glitch were Washington’s Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport, as well as New York’s LaGuardia and JFK International Airport.
The FAA said the problem is not believed to be caused by any accident or hacking.
According to the agency, the fault was with a computer system known as ERAM which is used at 20 air traffic control centers around the US that handle high-altitude air traffic.
The system was installed earlier this year but was already years behind schedule.
“The FAA is continuing its root cause analysis to determine what caused the problem and is working closely with the airlines to minimize impacts to travelers,” the agency said in a statement.
Flight tracking service FlightAware reported that about 400 flights had been delayed or cancelled across affected airports.
The ageing terminals of New York’s LaGuardia Airport – one of the busiest in the US – will be rebuilt, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced.
Vice President Joe Biden – who previously compared the airport to “some Third World country” – was on hand for the announcement on July 27.
Joe Biden said: “I wish everything I said that was truthful but controversial would turn out this well.”
The redesign will double the space available for planes to operate.
Work is scheduled to start in 2016, and the first redesigned portion of the airport will open to passengers in 2019.
LaGuardia Airport, which sits along the East River in Queens, is frequently ranked as one of the worst in the US, according to customer surveys.
“It’s slow, it’s dated, it has a terrible front-door entrance way to New York,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
Andrew Cuomo said VP Joe Biden was instrumental in securing federal funding for the project. Delta Airlines will also shoulder some of the costs of the $4 billion project.
With short runways that are surrounded by water, the airport has been dubbed “USS LaGuardia” by some pilots who say landing there is like arriving on an aircraft carrier.
Nearly 2 miles of new taxiways will be created under the plan, which will make landings easier for pilots.
