I, Daniel Blake is the biggest winner of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

This year’s Palme d’Or was Ken Loach’s second award for best picture at the festival after 2006’s The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

Ken Loach, 79, attacked the “dangerous project of austerity” as he accepted the award for his movie about a middle-aged widower and the UK welfare system.

Andrea Arnold won the competition’s Jury Prize for her road movie American Honey.

It was the 13th time that Ken Loach, a social campaigner for most of his career and the director of more than 50 movies, has competed at the event.

I, Daniel Blake, which stars stand-up comedian Dave Johns in the title role, was written by Ken Loach’s long-time collaborator Paul Laverty.I Daniel Blake Cannes 2016

The movie documents what happens when an older man living in Newcastle has a heart attack and can no longer do his job.

He is declared fit for work, meaning his benefits are stopped, and he begins to go hungry.

Accepting the festival’s top prize from Mel Gibson, Ken Loach said: “We must give a message of hope, we must say another world is possible.

“The world we live in is at a dangerous point right now. We are in the grip of a dangerous project of austerity driven by ideas that we call neo-liberalism that have brought us to near catastrophe.”

In the movie, Dave Johns meets single-mother of two Katie, who moves to Newcastle from London.

Cannes judges praised the actors’ depictions of the characters who “find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain”.

It was the first movie role for Dave Johns, who said he was delighted by the French film prize.

Dave Johns said: “Ken made a film 50 years ago called Cathy, Come Home and this is actually in the same vein, saying that people who are on the bottom rung of life, you know are struggling.

“I’m a stand-up comic. Working with Ken was just absolutely the most amazing thing and this news that we’ve won the Palme D’Or – I’m just blown away with it. “

Ken Loach was up against directors including Spanish Oscar-winner Pedro Almodovar, Sean Penn and Paul Verhoeven.

Iranian movie Forushande (The Salesman) by Asghar Farhadi won two awards at the 69th staging of Cannes – best screenplay, and best actor, won by Shahab Hosseini.

The Grand Prix went to Juste la Fin du Monde (It’s Just the End of the World), directed by Canada’s Xavier Dolan, while Philippines’ Jaclyn Jose won best actress for her role in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa.

Andrea Arnold won the competition’s Prix du Jury (Jury Prize) for American Honey.

American Honey, starring Shia LaBeouf, follows a group of wild youths as they travel through US states selling hard luck stories and magazine subscriptions.

Cafe Society, Woody Allen’s latest movie, will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The film, starring Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Steve Carell, centers on the buzzing cafe society of 1930s Hollywood.

According to the festival organizers, Cafe Society tells the story “of a young man who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry, falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant cafe society that defined the spirit of the age”.

Café Society marks a romantic reunion for Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg who appeared together in American Ultra.

The movie will screen out of competition at this year’s event, which runs from May 11 to 22, ahead of its release later this year.

Jodie Foster’s Money Monster starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, and Steven Spielberg’s The BFG are already confirmed to screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Carol movie is being tipped for this year’s Cannes Film Festival glory in France.

The film, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, tells the story of two women having an illicit romance in 1950s New York.

Carol – based on a 1952 novel by Patricia Highsmith, author of The Talented Mr. Ripley – is winning rave reviews for its lead performances.

Cate Blanchett denied speculation suggesting she drew on her own early gay relationships to create the role.Carol movie 2015

The actress said: “In 2015, the point should be: who cares?”

Carol, directed by Todd Haynes, follows the blossoming relationship between a glamorous married woman (Cate Blanchett) and an impressionable shop girl (Rooney Mara).

Last week, double Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, 46, reportedly admitted to Variety magazine that she had had many female partners.

However, at a news conference in Cannes, the actress was quick to scotch reports of a gay past.

Carol is seen by some critics as a companion movie to Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven, about an illicit romance between a white woman and a black man, also set in the 1950s.

Grace Of Monaco release date has been delayed until 2014, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie was due for release in November 2013, making it eligible for next year’s Oscars.

In the film, Nicole Kidman plays Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly known as movie star Grace Kelly, during a crisis in her marriage to Prince Rainier III.

Director Olivier Dahan previously coaxed an Oscar-winning performance out of Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. The new film co-stars Tim Roth, Frank Langella and Derek Jacobi.

The movie has already been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where Nicole Kidman was serving on the festival jury.

But it has been met with some resistance by Prince Albert II of Monaco, who criticized the film for being historically inaccurate.

In a statement released earlier this year, Prince Albert and his sisters said Grace Of Monaco contained “major historical untruths and a series of purely fictional scenes”.

“The Princely family wishes to emphasize that this film is by no means a biopic,” the statement said.

An armed man has stolen jewels worth about 40 million euros ($53 million) in the French Riviera resort of Cannes, officials say.

They say the hold-up took place on Sunday morning at a jewellery exhibition at the Carlton Hotel.

The hotel is located on the Croisette promenade – one of the most prestigious locations in the town.

The theft is the largest in a series of high-profile robberies in Cannes, which is famous for its annual film festival.

The Carlton Hotel is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch A Thief – his 1955 film about a jewel thief operating in the French Riviera.

During the latest theft, an exhibition of diamonds by the jeweller Leviev was being held in the lobby of the hotel.

Local media said the robber made off with the jewels in a briefcase. It is not yet known who the owner was.

If the value of the jewels is confirmed, it would reportedly be the second-largest heist in France.

A Cannes police spokesman said: “A full and urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels. Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings.”

The Cannes film festival, which attracts celebrities from around the world, was hit by two jewellery thefts in May this year.

A necklace by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono reportedly worth 1.9 million euros ($2.5 million) vanished after a celebrity party at a five-star hotel in the resort town of Cap d’Antibes.

A week before, more than 777,000 euros ($1 million) worth of jewels were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard.

The Carlton Hotel itself saw also a huge robbery in August 1994, when gunmen burst into its jewellery store just as it was closing and made off with jewels now valued at $77 million.

France’s biggest ever robbery took place in 2008, when three men stole almost every piece on display at a jewellery exhibition in Paris with an estimated value of 85 million euros ($113 million).

Johnny Depp has dropped out of Black Mass, the notorious gangster Whitey Bulger biopic, after being asked to take a $10 million pay cut.

Johnny Depp, 50, was to have been paid $20 million to star in Black Mass which told the story of Boston mobster Whitey Bulger.

But after producers shopped the film to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival in France and failed to attract a large number of bids they asked Johnny Depp to drop his usual $20 million fee.
The actor refused to agree to the paycut – and has walked away from the production.

Producers of the film to be directed by Hollywood veteran Barry Levinson had wanted to trim their budget down to $60 million.

Johnny Depp has dropped out of Black Mass, the notorious gangster Whitey Bulger biopic, after being asked to take a $10 million pay cut

According to the Hollywood Reporter pre-sales of the film at Cannes had been “soft”.

Whitey Bulger was on the FBI’s Most Wanted list for over 10 years and wanted for murder.

He was captured in June of 2011 after his girlfriend was spotted visiting a beauty salon.

The FBI had placed adverts in beauty magazines asking people to be on the lookout for Whitey Bulger, 83 and his girlfriend Catherine Greig.

The pair were arrested in California.

Whitey Bulger was wanted for the murder of at least ten people and was said to be the basis for the Jack Nicholson character in the film The Departed.

Johnny Depp, one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, will next be seen in The Lone Ranger which opens in July. He plays Tonto, the native American partner of the Lone Ranger.

Denis Carré, a Psy lookalike, duped hundreds of people with various appearances during the recent Cannes Film Festival and now he has struck again, attending the Monaco Grand Prix over the weekend while the real singer performed in Italy on the same day.

Among those duped by Denis Carré’s appearance at the racing event were Amanda Holden and David Hasselhoff, who both posted pictures of themselves with the lookalike on their Twitter pages.

However, Amanda Holden appeared unsure if she was actually posing with Psy in the shot, captioning the picture: “Not sure if this guy is kosher?! Rumors circulating he was a fake? What do YOU think?!”

David Hasselhoff seemed a bit more certain that he wasn’t with the real Gangnam Style musician, tweeting with a picture of himself and girlfriend Hayley Roberts with “Psy”: “Was that really PSY ? I think not!!”

Other stars to have been duped by Denis Carré included Skyfall actress Naomie Harris, who unwittingly posted a picture of herself on Twitter with who she thought was Psy.

Speaking recently about how he managed to convince so many people that he was the singer, Denis Carré credited the scam to an intricate web of tricks.

He told Channel 5 News: “The game was pretty well played – we prepared a lot with my manager and communication team on how we were going to do that.

“We had the bodyguards, we had the cars, we had event managers ready for it… just to have the illusion.”

The trick was revealed when the real Psy appeared on US talk show Live with Michael and Kelly, which is filmed in New York City, while his imposter was in Cannes.

Denis Carré is said to have scammed free drinks and bottle service while lunching at the Torch Beach Club, a hotspot which has been frequented by Justin Timberlake and Mark Ronson during their time in Cannes, and was even surrounded by three security guards, according to the New York Post.

Later, Denis Carré partied at an A-list bash hosted by socialite Goga Ashkenazi at Château Garibondy, where the guest list included Rosario Dawson and supermodel Karolina Kurkova.

Disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has appeared in public for the first time with his new girlfriend Myriam L’Aouffir on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival 2013.

It was confirmation that the pair are together, following DSK’s split last year from his long-suffering wife of 20 years, Anne Sinclair.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Myriam L’Aouffir were rumored last September to have started dating but this appearance appeared to be the first public confirmation. They attended the screening of a French film, Full Sun, starring veteran actor Alain Delon.

At 43 years-old, Myriam L’Aouffir is 20 years younger than her infamous economist boyfriend.

Like DSK, Myriam L’Aouffir comes from a Moroccan background, and is also believed to be estranged from her husband, with whom she has two children. She works in marketing.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn last December agreed a financial settlement with hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo whose 2011 allegation of s***al assault forced him to resign from the International Monetary Fund.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn has appeared in public for the first time with his new girlfriend Myriam L’Aouffir on the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival 2013

DSK – once tipped as a Socialist French president – was accused of trying to rape chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo at a Sofitel Hotel in New York.

After being held in the NYC’s notorious Rikers Island prison, criminal charges were dropped.

DSK then returned to France last year only to face accusations of s***ally abusing a young French writer.

French judges agreed there was a case against DSK, but had to drop it because the alleged attack happened more than a decade ago.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn was then charged with conspiring with pimps in Lille, northern France, to procure girls for s** parties around the world.

A film starring Jacqueline Bisset – who plays his former wife Anne Sinclair – and Gerard Depardieu as DSK which recreates the drama around the 2011 incident is expected to be released later this year.

DSK’s New York arrest ultimately destroyed his ambitions for the French presidency.

A gifted orator, fluent in English and German, DSK had been seen as a likely challenger to president Nicolas Sarkozy in the 2012 election, won by Francois Hollande.

Blue is the Warmest Colour (La vie d’Adèle), a love story about two young French women, has won the Palme d’Or for best film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The film has attracted attention for its s** scenes as well as the acclaimed performances of actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux.

Hollywood veteran Bruce Dern won best actor for his performance in Nebraska.

French star Berenice Bejo, known for silent film The Artist, won best actress for her role in The Past.

The winners were picked from the 20 films in competition and were named at the festival’s closing ceremony on Sunday.

Blue is the Warmest Colour is a three-hour coming-of-age movie in which Adele Exarchopoulos plays a 15-year-old who falls in love with an older woman, played by Lea Seydoux.

Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, the film won rave reviews in Cannes, being described as “epic yet intimate” by The Guardian.

The film also shocked some critics. The Hollywood Reporter said the “sprawling drama” would “raise eyebrows” as it crossed the barrier “between performance and the real deal”.

Some had questioned whether the s** scenes may make it too e**licit for the top prize.

But director Steven Spielberg, who chaired the jury, told reporters: “I think it will get a lot of play… I think this film carries a very strong message, a very positive message.”

In an unusual move, Steven Spielberg awarded the prize to the two lead actresses as well as the director.

Blue is the Warmest Colour ( La vie d’Adèle) has won the Palme d’Or for best film at Cannes Film Festival 2013

Accepting the prize, Abdellatif Kechiche said: “I should like to dedicate this film to the wonderful youth of France whom I met during the long period while making this film.

“Those young people taught me a lot about the spirit of freedom and living together.”

Blue is the Warmest Colour prevented US film-makers the Coen brothers from repeating their Palme d’Or success of 1991, when they won for Barton Fink.

Their latest film Inside Llewyn Davis, about the 1960s New York folk scene, won this year’s Grand Prix, effectively the runners-up prize.

The best actor award marks a return to the critical bosom for Bruce Dern, who is best known for roles in 1970s films including Coming Home, The Cowboys and The Great Gatsby.

Now 76, Bruce dern has won for playing an ageing, alcoholic father on a road trip to collect a lottery prize. The film, titled Nebraska, was directed by Sideways and The Descendants film-maker Alexander Payne.

Berenice Bejo’s best actress prize has proved that her performance in The Artist was not a one-off. Her film The Past is a family drama made by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi as the follow-up to his Oscar-nominated 2011 drama A Separation.

Mexico’s Amat Escalante, who made brutal drama Heli about the country’s drugs war, was something of a surprise choice for best director.

China’s Jia Zhangke won best screenplay for A Touch of Sin, an examination of rampant corruption in his country.

The Jury Prize went to Like Father, Like Son, about two families who discover that their six-year-old boys were switched at birth, directed by Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Films that missed out included Behind the Candelabra, in which Michael Douglas plays the legendarily flamboyant entertainer Liberace, and Italian director Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty, a sumptuous story about an ageing novelist.

Steven Spielberg was joined on the jury by Life of Pi director Ang Lee, actress Nicole Kidman and Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz.

The other judges were We Need To Talk About Kevin film-maker Lynne Ramsay, French actor Daniel Auteuil, Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, Japanese director Naomi Kawase and Bollywood star Vidya Balan.

Roman Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner stole the show on the red carpet in Cannes in her plunging red dress.

All eyes were on Emmanuelle Seigner, 46, as she waltzed along the red carpet with her husband in her custom Alexandre Vauthier silk jersey gown which she styled with red Christian Louboutin sandals.

The French actress, who stars in Venus In Fur – Roman Polanski’s adaptation of the David Ives Broadway play, looked vibrant in her dress.

Mother-of-two Emmanuelle Seigner’s dress perfectly showed off her lily white skin and with a slick of red lipstick and minimal make-up the actress certainly upstaged fellow actress Nicole Kidman.

With the chilly breeze blowing her red dress around her legs The Diving Bell and the Butterfly star kept hold of her husband’s hand as they negotiated the red carpet.

The film is about an actress trying to get a director to give her a role.

A Psy impersonator duped organizers and celebrities at Cannes Film Festival.

The Psy imposter managed to sneak into several A-list parties and other exclusive venues over the course of two days earlier this week until finally being discovered yesterday when the real Psy appeared on US talk show Live with Michael and Kelly, which is filmed in New York City.

The impersonator reportedly scammed free drinks and bottle service while lunching at the Torch Beach Club, a hotspot which has been frequented by Justin Timberlake and Mark Ronson during their time in Cannes, and was even surrounded by three security guards, according to the New York Post newspaper.

While the fake Psy was enjoying the luxury on offer in Cannes, the real Gangnam Style hitmaker attended the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday and later jetted to New York City to film a TV appearance.

Acknowledging his trouble-making doppelganger, Psy wrote on Twitter: “Seems like there’s another ME at Cannes…say Hi to him.”

Among the celebrities duped by the impostor were Skyfall actress Naomie Harris, who thought she had met Psy at a party thrown by Chopard on Tuesday, and tweeted a snap of them together.

A De Grisogono necklace reportedly worth 1.9 million euros has been stolen during the Cannes film festival, in the second such theft to hit this year’s event.

The expensive piece by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono vanished after a celebrity party at a five-star hotel in the resort town of Cap d’Antibes.

The theft occurred despite “large security measures”, including 80 security guards, the jeweller said.

Last week, thieves ripped a safe with jewels from the wall of a hotel room.

The latest robbery happened after an exclusive gala held at the exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Tuesday night.

The high-profile event celebrated De Grisogono’s 20th anniversary, and was attended by international movie stars like Sharon Stone and Ornella Muti.

The jeweller house regularly loans its jewels to celebrities, including Paris Hilton and Cameron Diaz.

“It is actually the first time it has happened in our 20-year history,” the company said in a statement.

It added that the theft occurred “despite the large security measures set in place: over 80 security guards plus police”.

Last Friday, thieves stole jewels by Swiss jewellers Chopard from the Novotel hotel.

The precious goods were worth more than 770,000 euros.

Chopard is an official sponsor of the festival and also makes its top award, the Palme d’Or. But the trophy was not among the stolen items.

At least two apartments rented by film executives have also been burgled during the festival, according to the AFP news agency.

Alec Baldwin picked up wife Hilaria during a photocall for Seduced and Abandoned at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday.

Alec Baldwin, 55, was seen grinning with delight as he toted his stunning wife, who placed a protective hand on her stomach as she was hoisted into the air.

Beaming widely, Alec Baldwin certainly didn’t appear to be struggling as he lifted Hilaria, 29, who smiled somewhat indulgently at her husband’s antics.

Alec Baldwin looked as dapper as ever in a navy jacket, open-neck blue shirt and grey trousers for the photocall, teamed with smart black shoes and a pair of sunglasses.

Hilaria Baldwin, meanwhile, opted for teal silk sleeveless dress with a black waistband detail and sky-high black heels – clearly not suffering enough with her pregnancy to forgo heels for flats.

The pair’s appearance at the photocall came after they made a stunning appearance on the red carpet for the premiere of new movie Blood Ties on Monday night.

Hilaria Baldwin, who was recently named on Vanity Fair‘s list of the best dressed pregnant celebrities, tweeted ahead of her arrival to the festival that she would be missing her two dogs, saying: “It’s even harder leaving them while I’m pregnant. Their cries make me cry!”

Alec Baldwin’s HBO documentary Seduced and Abandoned – directed by his friend James Toback – was filmed during last year’s film festival and follows the actor running between yachts and hotels trying to pitch a movie he hopes to finance and make.

It also includes interviews conducted by Alec Baldwin with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese, as well as actors Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain.

Alec Baldwin famously lost his cool with film producer Harvey Weinstein at last year’s Cannes film festival.

But it appears that Alec Baldwin, 55, has managed to keep his fiery temper under control this time around.

Looking dapper and thankfully relaxed on the red carpet on Monday alongside his pregnant wife Hilaria Baldwin, 29, Alec was in Cannes to promote his new documentary film Seduced and Abandoned.

Alec Baldwin’s HBO documentary Seduced and Abondoned – directed by his friend James Toback – was filmed during last year’s film festival and follows the actor running between yachts and hotels trying to pitch a movie he hopes to finance and make.

It also includes interviews conducted by Alec Baldwin with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese, as well as actors Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain.

And it was during this process that Alec Baldwin lost his temper with Harvey Weinstein, who wouldn’t help Alec finance the film.

Alec Baldwin allegedly called the 60-year-old producer a “f***ing douchebag” after he refused Alec’s pitch.

But Alec Baldwin was quick to issue Harvey Weinstein with an apology by writing him a note at the amfAR charity event last year.

Harvey Weinstein said in a statement: “Alec couldn’t have been more gracious. We all lose our tempers sometime; trust me I have, too. We all appreciated his generosity to everyone at amfAR.”

His reps also explained that Harvey Weinstein couldn’t be involved in Alec Baldwin’s project because he had a hectic schedule at the time.

Filmmaker James Toback’s most recent film was the 2008 documentary on boxer Mike Tyson called Tyson.

Hopefully Alec Baldwin was able to keep his well-documented temper at bay during the rest of the filming.

Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin’s wife Hilaria brought the glamour to Cannes in her glittering grey dress and pink heels, despite being heavily pregnant.

Alec Baldwin, who has a 17-year-old daughter Ireland with ex-wife Kim Basinger, recently revealed his delight at becoming a father once again with his Yoga teacher wife Hilaria Thomas.

The actor said: “It’s really like a dream come true.

“Because as much as I have struggled as a divorced parent – and God knows, I’ve had my ups and downs – the only thing that I regret was that I missed so much of my daughter’s childhood because of this contentious situation.”

Eva Longoria, 38, will no doubt be horrified to learn that the humiliating incident was caught on camera.

The former Desperate Housewives star trudged on with the aid of several red carpet staffers and was ultra careful not to step on her trailing gown with her beige high heels.

Her dress wasn’t the only part of her ensemble that was in danger of falling apart.

Eva Longoria’s elaborately coiffed hairdo was in risk of faltering in the foul weather but at least she had some shelter beneath a large unflappable umbrella.

Her perfectly oval-shaped face was heavily made-up too, especially around the eyes, and most know what rain can do to mascara-covered lashes.

Christoph Waltz was left shaken last night after a man pointed a hand-gun at him during a live French news programme TV show and threatened to blow up a studio with a hand grenade.

Cristoph Waltz, who won Oscars for roles in two Quentin Tarantino movies, was being interviewed about Cannes Film Festival on the set of Canal +’s Le Grand Journal Du Festival with fellow actor Daniel Auteuil when two shots were fired.

A recording of the moment shows the audience run away in panic, as security guards rush Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil off stage.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Christoph Waltzt said he feared for his life.

“I was on a panel at the Studio Canal platform off the beach when a man produced a gun.

“I think it was a pistol and he fired but luckily for me they were blanks.

“Then he shouted he had a grenade and again luckily for me there was no grenade.

“The police have him. They tackled him to the ground. I don’t know who he was or where he came from or what his problem was.”

Witness Arthur Laiguesse said: “The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand.”

Police arrested the man at the scene and found he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife, authorities said.

“It really appears to be a crazy guy,” said a police source.

Speaking to France 24, Michel Denisot, the programme’s presenter, said: “He said to a woman next to him <<If I were you, I wouldn’t stick around here>>. “There were no bullets in the gun and the grenade was a fake.”

Christoph Waltz revealed what happened after he arrived at the fabled Eden Roc restaurant for a dinner hosted by Charles Finch, the London-based film producer and magazine publisher.

The actor was quite composed and unfazed when he told what had happened to him earlier in the evening.

“I’m fine there’s nothing to worry about now,” Christoph Waltz said.

Christoph Waltz, who has won two best supporting actor Oscars for Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, and Daniel Auteuil, both of whom are serving on the Cannes jury, returned to the set.

The shooting was the second security incident on day three of the 12-day Cannes Film Festival, the world’s largest cinema showcase that attracts thousands of actors, directors, film executives, journalists and fans.

A police source said $1.4 million worth of Chopard jewellery intended to adorn movie stars had been stolen from a room at the Suite Novotel hotel overnight on Thursday.

But Chopard said the value had been exaggerated and the items were not for actresses to use, declining to give further details.

Actress Robin Wright last night said she had heard rumors of an incident in Cannes.

“I saw ambulances and police but I didn’t know what they were for. It held traffic up but I didn’t know the details till I heard it from Christoph as you just have.”

Christoph Waltz is a festival jury member along with Steven Spielberg and Nicole Kidman.

More than $1 million (777,000 euros) worth of Chopard jewels have been stolen from Novotel hotel in Cannes, French police say.

The jewels were to be loaned to stars appearing at the famous annual film festival on the French Riviera.

They were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police say the thieves ripped the safe containing the jewels from a wall of the room at the Novotel hotel.

Festival officials said the Palme d’Or was not among the stolen items.

The event’s top award is also made by Chopard, which is an official sponsor of the festival.

The theft happened a few hours after the festival was shown The Bling Ring, a new film by director Sofia Coppola.

The Bling Ring is about teenagers who find out when celebrities are attending red carpet events in order to break into their homes and steal their designer clothes, bags and shoes.

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place in Cannes, France, from 15 to 26 May 2013.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will see in competition Only God Forgives, the second film from Drive partnership Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn and Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra.

Other films in the running for the coveted Palme d’Or include Roman Polanski’s Venus In Fur and Inside Llewyn Davis by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Steven Spielberg is the head of this year film festival’s jury.

Cannes Film Festival 2013 runs from 15th to 26th of May.

Ryan Gosling, currently starring in Beyond The Pines at the UK box office and Nicolas Winding Refn, who directed the controversial biopic of the “UK’s most violent prisoner” Charles Bronson, unveiled their previous film Drive at the film festival in 2011.

The violent thriller was nominated for the Palme d’Or but lost out to Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life. However, the film landed Nicolas Winding Refn the best director trophy.

Steven Soderbergh, who won Cannes’ top prize in 1989 for his film Sex, Lies and Videotape, is back in competition with his eagerly-awaited film Behind the Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas as the flamboyant entertainer Liberace, who masked his homosexuality from public view.

Matt Damon plays his gay lover in the film, made for cable channel HBO.

James Gray’s film The Immigrant, about a young woman tricked into a life of burlesque and vaudeville, stars Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix and Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard.

Inside Llewyn Davis is the upcoming film written and directed by the Coen brothers. Set in the 1960s, the film about a young folk singer, stars British actress Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake.

Alexander Payne, who sat on last year’s Palme d’Or jury, is in competition this year with his film Nebraska, about a father and son trekking from the state of Montana to Nebraska to claim some prize money.

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, who directed Sean Penn as a faded rock star in This Must Be The Place, is in the running with his film The Great Beauty.

Controversial Japanese director Takashi Miike’s Straw Shield is a crime-thriller set in modern day politics while Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi – who won an Oscar for his film A Separation – directs The Artist actress Berenice Bejo in his new film The Past.

With other films in competition from Chad, China and Mexico, Cannes president Gilles Jacob said this year’s competition reflected “an attitude which, decade in decade out, guarantees the continuing existence of this institution. The idea is one I particularly like, and it sees the festival as a shelter for endangered artists”.

Outside of the films screening in competition are a number of other sections.

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson stars in The Bling Ring, the latest film from Sofia Coppola – based on the real-life robberies of celebrity homes in Malibu.

Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatbsy, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival

The film will screen in the Un Certain Regard event, as will James Franco’s latest directorial effort As I Lay Dying.

The film is based on William Faulkner’s 1930 stream of consciousness novel, which is narrated by 15 different characters.

Baz Luhrmann’s anticipated The Great Gatbsy, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will open the festival and the closing film is Zulu, a South African cop thriller starring Orlando Bloom and Forest Whittaker.

Jerry Lewis, the comedy star of the 1950s and 60s, who later poured his efforts into raising money for muscular dystrophy research, will get a special tribute at this year’s event.

The 66th Cannes Film Festival will be opened by Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic novel, Toby Maguire and Carey Mulligan also star.

Baz Luhrmann – whose debut film Strictly Ballroom was screened at Cannes 21 years ago – said the festival had “always been so close to our hearts”.

His new film will be shown on May 15 at the Grand Theatre Lumiere of the Palais des Festivals.

“F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphael,” Baz Luhrmann said in a statement.

The Great Gatsby was scripted by Baz Luhrmann and co-writer Craig Pearce, who worked together eight-time Oscar nominated film, Moulin Rouge. That film also opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2001.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars as the tragic romantic Jay Gatsby, last worked with the director on his 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, for which Baz Luhrmann won a BAFTA for best screenplay and best direction.

The actor is returning to Cannes for the first time since he presented the 2007 ecological documentary, The 11th Hour, which he produced.

The Great Gatsby features songs by Jack White and rapper Jay-Z – who is also due to attend the opening at Cannes.

It will also be screened in 3D – only the second time in the history of the festival a film has been shown in the format after Pixar’s Up opened in 2009.

The film had been due for release last Christmas but was pushed back by Warner Bros to ensure it “reaches the largest audience possible”.

Michael Haneke’s film focused on an elderly couple whose relationship is tested when the wife suffers a series of strokes.

The central roles were played by French actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, who joined Michael Haneke on stage to collect the Palme d’Or.

“This film is an illustration of the promise we made to each other, if either one of us finds ourselves in the situation that is described in the film,” said Michael Haneke.

The Grand Prize, considered the competition’s second place, was won by Matteo Garrone’s Italian satire Reality.

Carlos Reygadas was named best director for the surrealist tale Tenebras Lux.

Ken Loach was showing a very different film to gritty Irish War drama The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which won the Palme d’Or in 2006.

The Angels’ Share is a dramatic comedy about a visit to a whisky distillery by a group of misfit young offenders who are inspired to change their lives.

Kosovar Albanian actress Arta Dobroshi ended up being the centre of attention at Cannes Film Festival 2012 thanks to an unfortunate “Marilyn Monroe” moment which saw her skirt blow up to reveal her derriere in one of the worst faux pas’ of the festival so far.

Arta Dobroshi was to promote her movie Trois Mondes (Three Worlds) along with co-stars Raphaël Personnaz and Clotilde Hesme.

The actress turned up looking demure in a blue high waisted skirt with a cream top tucked in and she finished her look off with some nude snakeskin heels with her hair scraped into a high bun.

But Arta Dobroshi ran into problems thanks to the breezy weather in Cannes today.

Arta Dobroshi shows her derriere in embarrassing "Marilyn Monroe" moment at Cannes Film Festival 2012

As she tried to look her best and pose for the waiting cameras her skirt blew up and was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s infamous white frock moment which saw her dress being blown upwards.

But Arta Dobroshi appeared unaware just how much she was revealing as she continued to pose and smile at photographers who were getting a bit more than they bargained for.

She managed to finally pose with her outfit the way it was supposed to look with the skirt firmly in place.

And she later sat with her co-stars as they posed during the photo shoot for the film.
