South Korean movie Parasite has won best picture award at this year’s Oscars, becoming
the first non-English language film to take the top prize.
Renee Zellweger won best actress for playing Judy Garland in Judy. Joaquin Phoenix was named best
actor for Joker.
Laura Dern and Brad Pitt won the supporting acting awards for their roles in
Marriage Story and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood respectively.
Parasite won four awards in total,
while Sam Mendes’s 1917 took three.
The World War One epic 1917 had
been the favorite to win best picture, but its awards all came in the technical
categories.

Mendes to the prize for best director, and also took the best original
screenplay award.
The South Korean movie is a vicious social satire about two families from
different classes in Seoul – one who live in poverty in a semi-basement, and
another rich family residing in a large home.
It has now managed what no other subtitled film has done in the 92-year
history of the Academy Awards and won best picture.
Bong Joon-ho said: “I feel like
I’ll wake up to find it’s all a dream. It all feels very surreal.”
Producer Kwak Sin-ae, who collected the trophy, said: “I’m speechless. We never imagined this to happen. I feel like a
very opportune moment in history is happening right now.”
There were boos when organizers tried to cut short the best picture
acceptance speech by turning the stage lights off – leading the lights to be
turned back on, allowing the celebrations to continue.
Brad Pitt won the first acting Oscar of his career – picking up the best
supporting actor trophy for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s movie.
He was the first winner of the night, and immediately used his speech to
attack the way the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump were
handled.
Brad Pitt referred to the fact that Republican senators voted against
allowing witnesses including former National Security Adviser John Bolton to
give evidence.
He said: “They told me I only
have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John
Bolton this week.
“I’m thinking maybe Quentin does
a movie about it and in the end the adults do the right thing.”
Brad Pit, 56, moved from the political to the personal, paying tribute to
co-star Leonardo DiCaprio and reflecting on his journey to Hollywood
superstardom.
Joaquin Phoenix, who won best actor for his remarkable performance in the
origin story about Batman’s nemesis, also used the podium to send a heartfelt
message about the state of the world, saying actors have the power to give a
“voice for the voiceless”.
After telling the audience to stop clapping him as he took to the stage –
“Don’t do that” – Joaquin Phoenix managed to cover topics from animal
rights and the environment to racism and sexism.
The vegan activist told the audience that “we feel entitled to
artificially inseminate a cow, and when she gives birth, we steal her baby even
though her cries of anguish are unmistakable”.
The actor also pointed out his own flaws: “I’ve been a scoundrel in my life. I’ve been cruel at times and
hard to work with, but so many people in this room have given me a second
chance.”
Joaquin Phoenix ended his speech by quoting a lyric written by his late
brother River: “Run to the rescue
and love and peace will follow.”

A day before her 53rd birthday, the actress said the award is the best
birthday present ever.
Laura Dern comes from an illustrious acting family, but in winning managed
something her parents have not. Mother Diane Ladd has been nominated for three
Academy Awards, and dad Bruce Dern has two unsuccessful nominations.
She told the audience: “Some say
never meet your heroes.
“But I say if you’re really
blessed, you get them as your parents.”
Renee Zellweger used her speech to pay tribute to Judy Garland, who was
nominated for two Oscars in the 1950s and 60s.
The actress said: “Judy Garland
did not receive this honor in her time,
“I am certain that this moment is an extension of the celebration of her legacy.”
Brad Pitt has rejected claims made by Angelina Jolie that he has failed to support their children.
In a court filing on August 8, Brad Pitt’s legal team said he had paid more than $1.3 million in costs and loaned $8 million to his estranged wife to help her buy a house.
On August 7, Angelina Jolie’s lawyer said Brad Pitt had paid “no meaningful child support” since she filed for divorce in 2016.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had been together since 2005 but only married in 2014.
In the documents, the actor’s lawyers also said Angelina Jolie’s claims regarding child support were a “thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage.”
There has been no immediate response from Angelina Jolie’s representatives.
“[Brad Pitt] has a statutory duty to pay child support. As of present, [he] has paid no meaningful child support since separation,” Angelina Jolie’s lawyer said in the filing on August 7.
“Given that the informal arrangements around the payment of the children’s expenses have not been regularly sustained… for over a year and a half, [Angelina Jolie] intends to file… for the establishment of a retroactive child support order,” the documents stated.
The actress cited “irreconcilable differences” when she filed to end the marriage, and the pair became embroiled in a bitter child custody dispute in the months following the announcement.
Brad Pitt was investigated for possible child abuse after losing his temper in front of some of the children, but was later cleared of the allegations.

Based on those results, and future prospects that include a partnership with the U.S. military, the company raised $3 million through Techstars. The app basically helps couples obtain a collaborative law divorce in any of the 50 states, through affiliations with over 600 legal and financial professionals. After completing five modules, the app helps couples prepare the paperwork.
Ms. Crosby says Wevorce has processed over $40 million in assets, and the typical divorce takes less than 90 days.
Collaborative Divorce
Today’s divorce apps, and there are many of them, are really more like lawyer referral services with a few added features, because it will be quite some time before even basic family law procedures move entirely online. For example, only one or two jurisdictions in the country currently allow papers to be served via social media, even though that is probably a better way to guarantee actual notice than publishing a newspaper ad, which is the preferred method. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people who feel that the family law system is either entirely inadequate or at least not well-suited for their particular needs. If that is the case, there are few or no complex legal issues, and there is broad agreement on most factual matters, collaborative law may be an option.
This method is one of the only true litigation alternatives, because if the collaborative process breaks down, the parties must begin the case totally anew with different counsel. Instead of court hearings, collaborative divorces feature meetings between the represented spouses where they work out possibly divisive issues like child custody and property division.
A collaborative law divorce, like the ones that Wevorce facilitates, may settle in as little as three or four meetings once a month, or it may take considerably longer.
Mediated Divorces
Only a handful of spouses opt for collaborative divorce, but nearly all litigants participate in either voluntary or court-ordered mediation.The success rate is about 70 percent for voluntary mediations and 60 percent for court-ordered ones. Mediation is part of the litigation process rather than a litigation alternative, making it ideal for cases that have a few complex legal issues, such as property commingling, that a judge probably needs to resolve. Moreover, if the parties agree on big-picture items but are far apart when it comes to the specifics, collaborative law will likely fail but mediation may succeed, because there is a neutral third party to facilitate settlement.
Private judges, like the one that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have apparently hired, may be an option as well. A retired judge is on hand to make legal decisions and there are almost no time delays. However, the price tag (as much as $1,000 an hour in some cases, and there are attorneys’ fees on top of that) makes this alternative cost prohibitive for most people.
According to Steven Fernandez, an attorney at Fernandez & Karney Divorce Lawyers, “Unlike private judges, mediation usually means significant cost savings, because mediations require less preparation time then trials and successful mediations may shave several months off the overall process.” Because it is private and informal, mediation usually takes the emotional conflict level down a few notches, and that is good if the couple has young children who still need both parents to get along at least reasonably well. Finally, if parties feel they have a stake in the outcome, “there may be more voluntary compliance later, which means less modification and enforcement litigation,” says Mr. Fernandez.
Because of all these benefits, and to reduce their trial dockets to the greatest extent possible, judges nearly always refer contested cases to mediation.
Agreed Divorces
Parties can settle any issues in any marriage dissolution proceedings at any time by mutual agreement. Formal premarital property division agreements cannot cover child support matters, so there must be a separate agreement. The California family code favors spousal agreements, and under the Uniform Premarital and Marital Agreements Act, judges usually enforce them unless they are excessively one-sided or there is evidence of coercion.
Agreed divorces basically combine the best of both mediated and collaborative divorces, because the parties control the outcome and the litigation process is available as a fallback.

Brad Pitt, 49, later released his own statement praising his “heroic Angie” following her difficult decision.
In a statement to London’s Evening Standard, Brad Pitt said: “Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie’s choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus.
“All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family.”
Angelina Jolie also revealed she is proud of her children for being so brave during her operations, which began on February 16th with the initial removal, before she had the reconstruction operation on April 20th.
The brave actress writes: “It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can.”
