Jill Kelley accuses Adam Victor of defamation and inappropriate behavior

0

Jill Kelley, the Tampa socialite embroiled in the scandal that cost CIA Director David Petraeus his job, fought back Tuesday after more than two weeks of silence as her attorneys released emails, telephone recordings and other material that they say show she never tried to exploit her friendship with Petraeus.

Jill Kelley, through her attorneys, went on the attack against a New York businessman who accused her of incompetence in her work trying to set up a deal he was negotiating with South Korean companies; an attorney who accused her of name-dropping and of being a social climber; and the FBI agent who first leaked her name in connection with the Petraeus scandal.

Jill Kelley, 37, became the focus of national media attention earlier this month after it was revealed that she was the recipient of anonymous emails from Paula Broadwell, David Petraeus’ biographer and mistress.

Paula Broadwell allegedly told Jill Kelley she should stay away from the former general and General John Allen, who had replaced David Petraeus as leader of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

David Petraeus and John Allen had become friends with Jill Kelley and her husband, Scott Kelley, a noted cancer surgeon, when the generals served at U.S. Central Command, which is headquartered at Tampa’s MacDill Air Force Base. Jill Kelley became an unofficial social ambassador for the base, hosting numerous parties for the officers.

The scandal this week cost Jill Kelley her appointment as an honorary consul for the South Korean government, which she had gotten because of her friendship with David Petraeus. The Koreans said she had misused the title in her personal business dealings.

Jill Kelley’s attorneys sent a cease-and-desist letter to New York businessman Adam Victor; a complaint to the Florida bar against Tampa attorney Barry Cohen, and a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office demanding that it investigate to find out who in the FBI leaked her name to the news media. Representatives of attorney Abbe Lowell emailed copies of the letters to The Associated Press.

In one of the letters, Abbe Lowell asks W. Stephen Muldrow, the assistant U.S. Attorney in Tampa, why Jill and Scott Kelley’s names were released in the course of the FBI’s investigation of David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell. Abbe Lowell said federal privacy laws could be applicable to the couple’s information.

“As you know, there are several rules and laws that seek to protect United States citizens against such leaks,” Abbe Lowell wrote.

He also wanted to know whether the U.S. Attorney’s Office was investigating the source of the leaks.

“You no doubt have seen the tremendous attention that the Kelleys have received in the media,” wrote Abbe Lowell.

“All they did to receive this attention was to let law enforcement know that they had been the subjects of inappropriate and potentially threatening behavior by someone else.”

Another letter spoke of a business deal that Jill Kelley tried to broker with South Korea.

Jill Kelley met Adam Victor in late August at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, where they discussed having Kelley represent Victor’s company on a coal-gasification deal being negotiated with South Korean companies.

On August 30, according to the documents provided by Abbe Lowell’s office, Adam Victor sent Jill Kelley an email saying his company was seeking bids from four major Korean firms – Samsung, Hyundai, GS and GK – and that he expected the bidding to potentially reach $3 billion.

Jill Kelley reportedly requested $80 million for helping with the deal.

There are several back-and-forth emails through mid-September as Adam Victor and Jill Kelley tried to negotiate a fee for her work, with Kelley saying she was seeking 2% of the deal and Victor trying to clarify what she meant.

There were no other emails until Adam Victor sent one November 9, when Jill Kelley’s name surfaced in the Petraeus scandal. He wrote two more times after that before she responded.

When she finally did, he sent back another email in which he remarked: “When I heard about Petraeus, I thought of you.”

In a follow-up email, he asked if she was still in a position to help with Korea. She didn’t respond.

In a November 14 interview with the AP, Adam Victor said it had become clear that Jill Kelley was not a skilled negotiator and that he had wasted his time dealing with her.

In a letter released Tuesday and dated November 21, Abbe Lowell accused Adam Victor of seeking his “15 minutes of fame” by talking to the news media about his client.

Abbe Lowell said Adam Victor had defamed Jill Kelley with his clients and misstated her desire for 2% of the profits by saying she wanted 2% of the entire deal. Abbe Lowell also accused Adam Victor of unspecified inappropriate behavior toward Jill Kelley.

“If you want to continue seeking publicity for yourself, that is one thing,” Abbe Lowell wrote to Adam Victor.

“However, if you do that by maligning a person, that is something else.”

He then accused Adam Victor of casting Jill Kelley in a false light and suggested his attorney contact Abbe Lowell to discuss the matter.

Adam Victor told the AP late Tuesday that he never accused Jill Kelley of wrongdoing, only that she was naive and not an experienced negotiator. He also said his female assistant was present every time he met with Jill Kelley.

Bitcoin profit halves due to inflation

Safeguards built into the bitcoin software are about to be triggered as the number of bitcoins in circulation hits a key milestone.

This means bitcoin “miners” will have to work twice as hard to be rewarded with the same number of coins.

The change comes as competition to create the coins gets more intense with the release of custom mining chips.

Since the creation of the bitcoin network in early 2009, bitcoins have grown to become a very widely used digital currency. An increasing number of online shops and businesses accept bitcoins as payments and currently each bitcoin is worth about $12.

As a digital currency, bitcoins are not issued by a central bank or national mint. Instead they are created by the system’s network when a specific amount of computer work, known as a “block” has been completed. Fifty bitcoins are released when that block is done and the work, which involves solving a hard mathematical problem, is completed.

The protocol that defines this block-to-coin ratio reduces the reward given for finding each block every time 210,000 blocks have been found. According to statistics gathered about the bitcoin network, the 210,000 figure looks set to be passed on 28 November. Then, instead of getting 50 bitcoins per block, miners will get only 25.

“The main reason to do this is to control inflation,” said Vitalik Buterin, a journalist at Bitcoin Magazine. Controlling the rate at which coins were created, he said, meant there would never be a surge or shortfall in the number of bitcoins in circulation, either one of which could rapidly change the value of each coin.

It addition, he said, it was a hedge against technological innovation. In the early days of bitcoins, many people used desktop computers to do the hard sums. Then they started to use banks of graphics cards that could do the maths very quickly to speed up the rate at which blocks of work were completed.

Vitalik Buterin said some miners were now using even more specialized hardware to do the mathematical work and firms were starting to produce custom-made chips that stepped up the pace of work even more.

However, he said, the creators of bitcoins had foreseen these changes and built in controls to keep the numbers of blocks completed relatively constant.

“The protocol always calibrates difficulty to make up for increased mining power,so the speed at which people are finding blocks isn’t going to go up by much no matter what.”

Jaramana twin blasts kills at least 34 people in Damascus

At least 34 people have been killed and many injured by two car bomb explosions in Jaramana, a south-eastern district of Damascus, Syrian state media report.

State television said “terrorists” were behind the blasts in Jaramana and broadcast pictures showing several charred vehicles and damaged buildings.

The district is predominantly Druze and Christian, two communities which have so far not joined the uprising.

Earlier, there were clashes between security forces and rebels in Jaramana.

There has been fierce fighting in recent days in eastern parts of the countryside around Damascus, known as the Ghouta.

The pro-government TV channel, Addounia, said the car bombs exploded in Jaramana shortly after 06:40 local time.

“Terrorists blew up two car bombs filled with a large amount of explosives in the main square,” the official Sana news agency reported.

State television quoted a source at the interior ministry as saying that 34 people had died and 83 had been seriously injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based activist group, put the death toll at 38.

“Activists and residents in the town said most of the victims were killed when a suicide attacker blew up his car, just after an explosive device was used to blow up another car,” it said.

Two smaller bombs also exploded in Jaramana at around the same time as the attack, Sana said, adding that nobody was killed by them.

No group has said it was behind the bombings, and there was no immediately obvious military or government target.

“What do they want from Jaramana? The town brings together people from all over Syria and welcomes everybody,” one resident told the AFP news agency.

The population of Jaramana is mainly Christian and Druze, a heterodox offshoot of Islam. It is also home to many Palestinian and Iraqi refugees.

Few members of Syria’s minority groups have supported the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. They are fearful for their future if the country’s majority Sunni Muslim community chooses an Islamist leadership to replace decades of secular rule.

Supporters of the government in Jaramana and other Damascus suburbs have set up armed vigilante groups – known as Popular Committees – to prevent attacks such as Wednesday’s. On 29 October, 11 people were killed in a car bombing in Jaramana.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, witnesses told AFP that rebel fighters had captured the pilot of a warplane shot down over Darat Izza, in the northern province of Aleppo. One of the agency’s reporters earlier saw a large explosion as the jet crashed near the town.

Fighter jets earlier bombarded rebel positions in the western Damascus suburb of Darayya, the SOHR said.

The government army also reportedly shelled Zabadani, a town in the mountains north-west of the capital. The Syrian Revolution General Commission, an opposition activist network, said more than 50 shells had fallen on the town in 30 minutes, injuring several people.

The Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC), another activist network, reported that at least 50 people had been killed across the country on Wednesday, most of them in Jaramana.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.

DSK charges in Carlton affair delayed

A French court has delayed a ruling on whether Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former International Monetary Fund chief, will stand trial on pimping charges.

Prosecutors said the appeals court in French town of Douai said the decision would be made on 19 December.

The charges relate to sex parties held in a luxury hotel in the northern French city of Lille.

DSK’s lawyer has asked for the case to be dropped, saying his client did not know that some of the women at the parties were prostitutes.

It is the only outstanding case Dominique Strauss-Kahn faces in France.

DSK, 63, was widely expected to become the Socialist presidential candidate before he was arrested in May 2011 in New York, accused of trying to rape a hotel maid.

US prosecutors later dropped criminal charges, though the alleged victim, Nafissatou Diallo, is pursuing a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault.

The Lille case has become known as the Carlton affair, after the name of the hotel in which the alleged orgies took place.

Consorting with prostitutes is not against the law in France, and DSK has acknowledged that he was at some of the parties with the women.

But DSK’s legal team says he had no idea they were prostitutes, and that there is no evidence to support a formal charge of pimping.

“We are requesting that this investigation be annulled on account of the fact that there are insufficient grounds to support it,” said defence lawyer Richard Malka.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who is reportedly taking steps to reinvent himself as a highly paid consultant and conference speaker, says the authorities are trying to “criminalize lust”.

Other cases against him have already been dropped.

Last month, French prosecutors ended an investigation into allegations of “gang rape” at a hotel in Washington after the woman who made the claim retracted her evidence.

Magistrates also dropped a sexual assault case brought by French author Tristane Banon on the grounds that the alleged 2003 incident had taken place too long ago.

Hobbit mania erupts in Wellington for the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Hobbit mania has erupted in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, for the world premiere of Peter Jackson’s new trilogy, The Hobbit.

The first of the three movies – prequels to the Lord of the Rings trilogy – was shown at Wellington’s Embassy Theatre on Wednesday evening.

Stars flew in for the event, which saw Wellington rebranded as “the Middle of Middle Earth”.

Tens of thousands of fans – some in costume – gathered around the theatre for the screening.

Some camped overnight to secure spots close to the 500m-long red carpet that led to the theatre, which was decorated to look like the entrance to a Hobbit house.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first film of the trilogy, which altogether cost $500 million to make and was filmed in New Zealand. The second film is set for release in December 2013 and the third in July 2014.

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson said it was “emotional and very humbling” to see such a crowd.

Ahead of the screening, the New Zealander said he was nervous about the film’s reception.

“Nothing’s ever perfect and it never will be; it’s a real mistake if you say we’re stopping now because we’ve made the perfect film,” he told Radio New Zealand.

“You never have and you never will.”

Wellington City Council put months of planning and just over NZ$1 million ($820,000) into preparations for the premiere, Radio New Zealand reported, as did tourism officials looking to boost visitor numbers.

Tony Everitt, Asia manager for Tourism New Zealand, said he expected tourism revenue to rise by as much as US$400 million annually because of the films.

The trilogy has taken more than five years to film and hit a number of obstacles. Filming was delayed for months over funding problems and a row over actors’ wages – at one point studio executives suggested moving filming to Britain.

Earlier this week, Peter Jackson also rejected claims from animal rights group PETA that up to 27 animals had died during filming, saying no animals were harmed.

In Wellington, however, crowds turned out for a party. Up to 100,000 people were said to have gathered for the premiere.

People’s Daily falls for Kim Jong-un “Sexiest Man Alive” spoof by The Onion

The online version of the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper, People’s Daily, appears to have fallen for a Kim Jong-un spoof by the US satirical website, The Onion.

The People’s Daily ran a 55-page photo spread of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after he was declared The Onion’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2012.

He is shown riding horses, holding children and greeting his troops.

The spread is accompanied by tongue-in-cheek quotes from The Onion about the “Pyongyang-born heart-throb”.

“With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-born heart-throb is every woman’s dream come true,” the People’s Daily quoted The Onion as saying.

“Blessed with an air of power that masks an unmistakable cute, cuddly side, Kim made this newspaper’s editorial board swoon with his impeccable fashion sense, chic short hairstyle and, of course, that famous smile.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m surprised,” said The Onion editor Will Tracy, responding to the People’s Daily feature.

“I mean, this kind of thing has happened in different forms before, so it never totally takes us by surprise, although it’s a total delight whenever it does happen.”

The Onion, which ran its Sexiest Man Alive piece earlier in the month, had an update to its article on Tuesday.

“For more coverage, please visit our friends at the People’s Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc. Exemplary reportage, comrades,” it added.

By around midday on Wednesday the People’s Daily spread appeared to have been removed, with the link to the English version returning an error message.

The Onion said previous winners of its Sexiest Man Alive prize included Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and US financial swindler Bernard Madoff, who is currently serving a 150-year prison sentence.

Two months ago, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency was forced to apologize after being taken in by a spoof news item from The Onion which declared rural Americans preferred Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to US President Barack Obama.

It quoted one fictional West Virginian resident as saying he would rather go to a baseball game with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad because “he takes national defense seriously”.

Susan Rice admits Benghazi attack error

Susan Rice, who is hotly tipped to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has admitted releasing incorrect information after September’s attack on the American consulate in Libya.

UN Ambassador Susan Rice said there had been no attempt to mislead the public, but Republicans were unconvinced.

After meeting Susan Rice on Tuesday, senators said they were troubled.

The envoy said her initial line that the Benghazi attack appeared to have sprung from a protest had been wrong.

The September 11 assault on the US consulate triggered a major political row over who knew what and when.

Days afterwards, Susan Rice, 48, said in a series of TV interviews that it seemed to have developed out of protests over an anti-Islamic film.

Later intelligence reports suggested it was possibly tied to al-Qaeda affiliates.

On Tuesday, Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte met privately with Ms Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell to discuss the attack.

After the meeting on Capitol Hill, Susan Rice said: “The talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: there was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi.

“While we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case the intelligence assessment has evolved.”

But the Republicans said questions remained unanswered.

Senator John McCain said: “We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn’t get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack.”

Senator Lindsey Graham said that he was “more disturbed now than I was before”, adding that he would “absolutely” attempt to block any nomination of Ms Rice for secretary of state.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Tuesday there were “no unanswered questions” about Susan Rice’s response to the Benghazi incident, accusing Republicans of being obsessed with it.

Republicans are demanding a joint committee investigate the attack, which left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is not expected to continue in the role for a second four-year term. The Obama administration would need the support of the Senate for any nomination to the post.

After winning re-election, President Barack Obama vigorously defended Susan Rice, calling Republican criticism of her “outrageous”.

Giuliana Rancic tweets picture of her baby boy Edward Duke

Giuliana Rancic took to Twitter to share a picture of two-month-old Edward Duke happily poised on top of husband Bill’s stomach wearing a cute grey and white striped hooded one-piece.

Little Edward Duke had a big smile on his face as he gazed happily at his proud papa, who had a hand underneath each of Edward’s arms so the baby could sit up.

Giuliana Rancic lovingly wrote: “I could stare at this face ALL day:)”

The reality TV star has endured so much in recent years including the strain of infertility and a devastating bout with breast cancer so now it’s wonderful to see her find the happiness she deserves.

Giuliana Rancic clearly appreciates every day since welcoming her son with Bill Rancic on August 29.

The picture also showed off what must be another joy in Giuliana Rancic’s life – Bill’s six-pack abdomen.

The couple, who have been married for five years and star in their own reality show, Giuliana and Bill, always knew they wanted to have a family, but their dreams of getting pregnant were complicated by fertility issues.

Giuliana Rancic tried in vitro fertilization, but two procedures failed to produce a pregnancy and the one that did ended in miscarriage.

After a routine mammogram in 2011, she found out she had breast cancer, but fortunately was able to beat it.

The couple never gave up their dream of becoming parents and early this year saw light at the end of the tunnel when they announced they were expecting a child via gestational carrier.

The Italian-born TV personality recently shared a video of her bottle-feeding the baby for the first time at the Denver, Colorado hospital right after he was born.

“I expected to be more nervous and more flustered, like I had no idea what to do,” Giuliana Rancic says in the video.

“But I feel totally at ease. I just feel like I know what he needs.”

“We just stare at him all the time,” Giuliana Rancic revealed on the Today show not long after Edward was born.

“He’s got big eyes and he’ll just stare at you for 10 minutes at a time. It’s just unbelievable…When the baby came into the world, we just started hysterically crying tears of joy.”

Giuliana and Bill Rancic are already planning to expand their family with baby No. 2 in the near future, and are even thinking of using the same gestational carrier as before.

Gennifer Flowers reveals how Bill Clinton contacted her in 2005 begging to visit her home

0

More than twenty years after she became a household name for alleging she had a 12-year affair with Bill Clinton, Gennifer Flowers has made yet more shocking claims about the former president.

Gennifer Flowers, who enjoyed a lucrative modeling and acting career as well as top book sales following her announcement in 1992, has claimed that Bill Clinton called her as recently as 2005, begging to see her.

Speaking with WGNO, Gennifer Flowers, 62, said was at home alone in Louisiana following her divorce when her phone rang.

“I picked up the phone and it was him,” she told host Susan Roesgen.

“And he wanted to come by my house and talk to me. I was taken aback; that was the last thing I expected.”

Gennifer Flowers added that, even when she refused to allow him to visit, he persisted.

“I said, <<No you can’t come over here>>,” she continued.

“He said, <<I’ll put on a hoodie and I’ll jog up there>> and I said, <<No, I want you to leave me alone>>. And that was that.”

The call allegedly came decades after Gennifer Flowers claimed they had a years-long affair while Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas. He later claimed they only ever had one sexual encounter in the 1970s.

But in another bombshell on WGNO, Gennifer Flowers claimed Bill Clinton had in fact discussed revealing the affair in the 1990s as he was struggling to achieve the recognition he needed to win the presidency.

Gennifer Flowers has claimed that Bill Clinton called her as recently as 2005, begging to see her
Gennifer Flowers has claimed that Bill Clinton called her as recently as 2005, begging to see her

“I made him a household name over night,” Gennifer Flowers told WGNO.

“We had had that discussion. He said, <<My problem right now is that no one knows who I am. I need that name recognition>>.

“He went on to talk about the other candidates and the advantages they had… When my story came out, he was a household name.”

The claims come as Gennifer Flowers appeared on the show in the wake of the David Petraeus sex scandal to discuss life as the mistress of a high-profile man.

“It’s very unfortunate,” Gennifer Flowers said of the Petraeus affair.

“It does really surprise me. But there’s always something like that around the corner.”

To Paula Broadwell, the biographer-turned-mistress of David Petraeus, she said: “Call me Paula! I’ll give you some really good advice… You’d better buck up, it’s going to be one hell of a bull ride.”

Of her own claims about her affair with Bill Clinton, Gennifer Flowers added: “I really thought that coming out and telling the truth would set me free, but it didn’t.”

Gennifer Flowers spoke out in January 1992, as Bill Clinton fought for the White House, and claimed she had had a 12-year affair with the married father of one during his time as governor.

She later released tape recordings she claimed she had secretly made of her and Clinton’s phone calls, although there was doubt over their authenticity.

In 1998, Bill Clinton admitted he had a sexual encounter with Gennifer Flowers and added in his 2004 autobiography My Life that it was only on one occasion in 1977, when he was already married.

Following her claims, Gennifer Flowers posed for Penthouse magazine and featured in independent films and television shows. She said her claims netted her $500,000.

How to keep your hair long and lustrous

Just good genes, or have they had some help? There are many hair-loss treatments on the market, so what is on offer?

1. THE HORMONE BLOCKER

Utrogestan,
prescription-only.

WHAT? Dr. Daniel Sister, a hormone specialist at BeautyWorksWest in London, says: “The hormone progesterone stops the body from converting testosterone to DHT, the hormone that causes hair to fall out.

“Progesterone is the first hormone to fall as women age.

“Treatment involves one tablet daily of bio-identical progesterone – which has synthetic progestins – or daily application of a cream with progesterone derived from yams or soya.”

EVIDENCE: When progesterone cream is applied, it reduces levels of 5-alpha reductase, a key enzyme linked to the formation of DHT, by around 70%.

This may slow or stop hair loss.

DOWNSIDE: There are no studies showing that progesterone therapy can actually make hair grow back.

2. BLOOD-FLOW BOOSTER

HairMax
harrods.com

WHAT? Looks like a lightweight plastic hairbrush but emits a red laser light from diodes between the plastic bristles. This stimulates blood flow and nutrients to the follicle, helping the body clear away DHT, say manufacturers.

EVIDENCE: Red light is used at hair-loss clinics and is known to calm inflammation, a possible cause of hair loss. In clinical studies of HairMax on 460 men and women, 93% saw increased hair growth. Most saw results in 12 to 16 weeks.

DOWNSIDE: It won’t prevent hair loss from chemotherapy or thyroid disorders. It is also unlikely to work on follicles where hair has fallen out and stopped growing for more than two years.

Consultant dermatologist Dr. Paul Farrant says: “There may be some regrowth so it’s worth a try, but no treatment will turn sparse locks into thick hair.”

3. NUDGE FROM NATURE

ThikRX
thikrx.co.uk

WHAT? A range of lotions, shampoos and supplements that use natural ingredients, including an extract of a type of palm tree called saw palmetto. These are designed to prevent harmful DHT reaching the follicle.

EVIDENCE: In a 24-week study of 19 people, 60 per cent saw increased hair growth, compared with 11 per cent who used a placebo treatment.

Dr. Paul Farrant says: “There is some evidence saw palmetto can block male hormones, but this is unlikely to be as effective as prescription drugs, although useful if you don’t want to, or cannot take the medication.”

DOWNSIDE: It’s expensive. You’ll need three kits for a 24-week course.

Over half of women experience hair loss after 40
Over half of women experience hair loss after 40

4. APPLIANCE OF SCIENCE

LA Science Anti-hair Loss Serum and Follicle Stimulating Shampoo,
la-science.co.uk

WHAT? They contain peptides – chemicals that form the building blocks of proteins – that mimic natural growth factors in the body, and increase blood-vessel size. These encourage blood flow to remove DHT, increase the size of the follicle for thicker hair, and extend the time hair grows.

EVIDENCE: Dr. Paul Farrant says: “There is a lot of promising research into peptides to alter the hair-growing cycle, but it’s early days.”

DOWNSIDE: Needs to be used for four months before any effects can be seen.

5. THE BLOOD-PRESSURE DRUG

Spironolactone
prescription-only.

WHAT? A diuretic used to reduce fluid in the body to treat high-blood pressure, it also slows production of male hormones and blocks the absorption of DHT by the hair follicles.

EVIDENCE: In a study, six women with androgenic alopecia were treated with it, while another six were untreated. The untreated group continued to lose hair, while four of those who took the drug did not, but did not gain it either. A further two women on higher doses did regrow some hair. Dr. Paul Farrant says: “This works to thicken hair, often for women with other symptoms of high male hormones.”

DOWNSIDE: Side effects include dizziness.

6. A SOOTHE OPERATOR

Ketoconazole Shampoo
chemistdirect.co.uk

WHAT? This anti-dandruff shampoo may also be an effective treatment for hair loss. The active ingredient ketoconazole (also known as Nizoral) prevents male hormones being taken up by hair follicles, and can calm the scalp, which improves hair health.

EVIDENCE: A study found Nizoral was more effective than low-dose Minoxidil, with an 18% increase in the number of hairs compared with 11% with Minoxidil.

“I use this if patients have a scaly scalp,” says Dr. Paul Farrant.

“Anti-fungals can promote growth in nails, but the studies on hair are weak.”

DOWNSIDE: There are no significant side effects.

7. FAKE IT LIKE CELEBRITIES

PRO-Volume Extensions,
wonderfulhairextensionist.co.uk, Intralace System, lucindaellery-hairloss.co.uk

WHAT? The secret of many an older celebrity’s thick, tumbling locks is extensions. Can there be any other explanation for Nigella’s normally wispy waves suddenly transforming to endless, glorious and glossy curls in photos and on her TV show? But not all extensions can be used on thinning hair.

Thick extensions with lumpy, hot-glued bonds, are visible and also damage existing hair. PRO-Volume real hair extensions have near-invisible bonds that slip over existing hair strands without damaging them, and can triple hair volume. They last about ten weeks.

If there is too much hair loss for extensions, then a “hair system”, left, may provide an answer. A fine mesh is placed over the balding areas and the client’s own hair is pulled through gently. Real hair extensions are then added to the lace.

EVIDENCE: The right extensions look extremely natural, and give instant fullness.

DOWNSIDE: These treatments won’t prevent or reduce hair loss.

8. PEPPERPOT SPRINKLES

Nanogen Fibres
nanogen.co.uk

WHAT? Tiny fibres made of keratin (the substance hair is made of) are sprinkled on to the hair from a “pepperpot” device. They cling to your hair by an electrostatic charge, making locks look thicker, so you lose the look of a wide parting or shiny scalp.

EVIDENCE: Studies show Nanogen fibres bind strongly to natural hair, so won’t fall off in use. A locking mist spray will make the effect waterproof.

DOWNSIDE: Not ideal to use all over, but good for filling wider partings. The main theory is that some people have a gene that means hair follicles are vulnerable to the hormone testosterone.

Eurozone deal on Greece bailout

Eurozone finance ministers and the IMF have agreed on a deal on emergency bailout for debt-laden Greece.

They have agreed to cut debts by 40 billion euros ($51 billion) and have paved the way for releasing the next tranche of bailout loans – some 44 billion euros.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras welcomed the deal, saying “a new day begins for all Greeks”, but it was condemned by the main opposition party.

European and Asian shares and the euro all climbed on news of the agreement.

The German Dax and French Cac 40 indexes each rose by 0.8% at the start of trading on Tuesday, while in London the FTSE 100 gained 0.6%, reversing losses from Monday.

In Asia, the MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.3% to its highest level in more than two weeks. Australian shares rose 0.7%, while South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index was up nearly 0.9%.

The euro reached its highest level against the dollar since 31 October, up about 0.2% to $1.30.

The breakthrough came after more than 10 hours of talks in Brussels. It was the eurozone’s third meeting in two weeks on Greece.

The deal opens the way for support for Greece’s teetering banks and will allow the government to pay wages and pensions in December.

The leader of the eurozone finance ministers’ group, Jean-Claude Juncker, said Greece would get the next installment of cash on 13 December.

Greece has been waiting since June for the tranche, to help its heavily indebted economy stay afloat.

European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi said the bailout would “strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece”.

For his part, Jean-Claude Juncker said the deal did not just have financial implications.

“This is not just about money. It is the promise of a better future for the Greek people and for the Euro area as a whole.”

Greece’s international lenders have agreed to take steps to reduce the country’s debts, from an estimated 144%, to 124% of its gross domestic product by 2020.

These include cutting the interest rate on loans to Greece, and returning 11 billion euros to Athens in profits from ECB purchases of Greek government bonds.

Ministers have also agreed to help Greece buy back its own bonds from private investors.

So far the ECB, IMF and the European Commission have pledged a total of 240 billion euros in rescue loans, of which Greece has received around 150 billion euros.

In return, Greece has had to impose several rounds of austerity measures and submit its economy to scrutiny.

The European Union’s commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, Olli Rehn, said it was crucial that a deal had finally been reached.

“For the eurozone this was a real test of our credibility, of our ability to take decisions on the most challenging of issues.

“And it was a test that we simply could not afford to fail.”

However, the Greek radical left opposition party Syriza – who came close to winning elections earlier this year – rejected the deal.

“It’s a half-baked compromise, a band-aid on the gaping wound of Greece’s debt,” said Syriza deputy Dimitris Papadimoulis, who claimed that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel had blocked attempts to cut Greece’s debt in half.

“This is a good deal, but I think a good deal was long overdue for Greece,” said Gerard Lyons, chief economist of Standard Chartered Bank.

“The most significant thing is the fact that about 20% of Greek debt has been written off,” he said. “The lesson of all crises elsewhere is that unless you start to write down debt you don’t really start to make inroads.”

However, Gerard Lyons cautioned that while the deal mitigated the risk of Greece leaving the euro, it did little to help the Greek economy recover.

“What Greece really needs is to reverse [its] austerity measures,” he added. Spending cuts by Athens – a pre-condition for its bailout – have been blamed for significantly worsening a multi-year contraction of the Greek economy.

The sentiment was echoed by Konstantinos Michalos, president of Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“[The deal] has to be seen as a major vote of confidence to the country,” said Konstantinos Michalos while affirming that “it’s simply extending the lifeline”.

Both agreed that Germany’s coming parliamentary elections played a role in making the deal possible.

“Six months ago the feeling in Europe generally was that they could sacrifice Greece,” said Gerard Lyons.

“That thinking has now changed, particularly in Germany.”

A new sense of caution has descended on Berlin ahead of the elections.

But while that has increased Germany’s willingness to head off the broader eurozone crisis that might be sparked by a Greek exit from the single currency, according to Konstantinos Michalos it has also made the German government less willing to grant Greece the greater leniency needed to ensure a stronger economic recovery.

Konstantinos Michalos said the onus was now on his own government to push through structural reforms – such as reducing protections for existing workers – in order to boost competitiveness and confidence in the economy, and achieve positive growth.

“We need to progress with these structural reforms immediately,” he said.

“It is not a question of years or months. It is a matter of weeks.”

The Greek economy is projected by Eurostat to have shrunk by a fifth by the end of this year since the crisis began in 2008.

France backs Palestinian non-member status at UN

France has confirmed its intentions to vote for Palestinian non-member status at the United Nations later this week.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France had long backed Palestinian ambitions for statehood and would vote yes “out of a concern for coherency”.

The Palestinians are asking the UN General Assembly to upgrade their status from permanent observer to a “non-member observer state”.

The vote is due to take place later this week.

“This Thursday or Friday, when the question is asked, France will vote yes,” Laurent Fabius told the lower house of parliament.

But he cautioned: “It’s only with negotiations between the two sides that we demand immediately, without any preconditions, that a Palestinian state can become a reality.”

Backing international recognition of a Palestinian state was a campaign pledge made by Francois Hollande before he became France’s president earlier this year.

France – a permanent member of the UN Security Council – is the first major European country to come out in favor of the move.

Germany is expected to vote against, while the UK’s ambassador to the UN, Mark Lyall Grant, said on Tuesday that London remained undecided.

An upgrade in status would allow the Palestinians to participate in General Assembly debates and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and the International Criminal Court (ICC), although the process would be neither automatic nor guaranteed.

If they are allowed to sign the ICC’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute, the Palestinians hope to take legal action in the court to challenge Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.

The bid follows an attempt in 2011 by Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority and chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), to join the UN as a full member state, which failed because of a lack of support in the Security Council.

Observers say the latest Palestinian application is likely win approval in the 193-member UN General Assembly, as it needs to only a simple majority to pass. According to the PLO, more than 130 countries already grant the Palestinians the rank of a sovereign state.

But Israel and the United States are concerned that the move is an attempt by the Palestinian Authority to secure statehood through the United Nations rather than through negotiation, as set out in the 1993 Oslo peace accords.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Lior Ben Dor said earlier this month that if the Palestinians, with UN non-member observer status, asked the ICC to resolve disputes with Israel, then Israel would “take unilateral steps to protect its interests”. He did not elaborate on what those measures would be.

President Mahmoud Abbas has said he does not “want any confrontations with the United States or Israel”, adding: “If we can start a dialogue or negotiations the day after the [UN] vote, we will.”

Cairo mass protest against President Mohamed Morsi

Tens of thousands of people are holding a protest in Cairo against President Mohamed Morsi, who last week granted himself sweeping new powers in Egypt.

Flag-waving demonstrators are chanting slogans accusing the president and the Muslim Brotherhood of betraying last year’s revolution.

On Monday Mohamed Morsi sought to defuse the crisis by saying the decree granting him new powers was limited in scope.

However, his opponents want him to withdraw the measure completely.

Ahead of Tuesday’s rally, opposition activists clashed with police. A protester, who was in his fifties, died of a heart attack after inhaling tear gas.

Activists later converged on Tahrir Square – the main focus of the revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak – for one of the largest demonstrations to date against Mohamed Morsi.

“The people want to bring down the regime,” marchers chanted, echoing slogans used in last year’s protests.

“We don’t want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom,” protester Ahmed Husseini was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Journalists, lawyers as well as opposition figures including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammed ElBaradei were expected to join Tuesday’s rally.

Protests are also being held in Alexandria and other cities.

The president’s decree, known as the constitutional declaration, said no authority could revoke his decisions.

There is a bar on judges dissolving the assembly drawing up a new constitution. The president is also authorized to take any measures to preserve the revolution, national unity or safeguard national security.

Critics say the decree is an attack on the judiciary. It has sparked violent protests across the country.

On Monday Mohamed Morsi told senior judges that the scope of the measure would be restricted to “sovereign matters”, designed to protect institutions.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which supports President Mohamed Morsi, said it was postponing its own demonstration, originally due on Tuesday, to avoid “public tension”.

The postponement is another sign that the government wants to defuse confrontation, but it remains to be seen whether it ends the days of angry and sometimes violent protests.

Egypt’s union of judges, known as the Judges Club, rejected the president’s statement, calling it “worthless” and said they would continue to suspend work in courts.

Ten people who have been exhumed

0

The remains of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat have been exhumed to investigate allegations he was poisoned.

The bodies of many well-known people have been dug up in the course of history, for myriad reasons. Here is a selection.

1. Oliver Cromwell

The English soldier and statesman died in 1658, was embalmed, had a state funeral and was then buried in Westminster Abbey. After the Restoration, he and two others were exhumed and beheaded. His corpse is believed to have been thrown into a pit at the execution site, which is near modern-day Marble Arch in London. His head was stuck on a pole and displayed on the roof of Westminster Hall. During the 18th Century it was regarded as a collector’s item. The head was analyzed in 1815 and confirmed to be that of Oliver Cromwell.

2. Jesse James

Rumors abounded that the notorious American gangster had faked his own death in 1882, so the body presumed to be his was exhumed in 1995 for DNA testing. The tests indicated that it was indeed his corpse, as the DNA was consistent with that of his known descendants. But a further two bodies were later exhumed – including that of a man who had claimed in life to be the real Jesse James.

3. Haile Selassie

Ethiopia’s last emperor was exhumed after being discovered buried under a toilet in Addis Ababa’s Imperial Palace, in 1992. Selassie ruled Ethiopia for 45 years and was regarded as a living god by Rastafarians. He was overthrown in a coup led by the dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1974, and held captive for a year in the palace before he died. It is thought he may have been murdered by his captors. In 2000, more than 25 years after his death, he was reburied in Addis Ababa’s Trinity Cathedral.

4. Evita Peron

The wife of Argentine President Juan Peron was embalmed – but after a military coup in the mid-1950s the country’s new rulers wanted the body out of the way. Removed by dead of night from a trade union headquarters in Buenos Aires, it probably spent time in a van parked on the streets of the city, behind a cinema screen, and inside the city’s waterworks, as well as in the offices of Military Intelligence. In 1957, with covert help from the Vatican, Evita Peron was buried in Milan, Italy, under a false name. Graffiti began to appear in Buenos Aires asking “Where is the body of Evita Peron?” In 1971 the body was disinterred and driven to Juan Peron’s new home in Madrid. Two years later, he was again elected President of Argentina, but died soon after. His third wife, Isabel, oversaw the repatriation of Evita Peron’s body to Argentina. She now lies in her family’s mausoleum, in a crypt fortified like a nuclear bunker.

5. Charlie Chaplin

The comedian’s body was dug up in March 1978 by two men who reburied it in a cornfield, and began demanding a ransom from Charlie Chaplin’s lawyer. Taken from the village cemetery in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, where the comic actor had spent the last 25 years of his life, it was returned to the same grave three months later, following the arrest of the grave robbers – refugees from Poland and Bulgaria. This time, however, the vault was made of reinforced concrete. The village gravedigger who discovered the theft said there was no chance of the body again being spirited away at night.

“You would need a pneumatic drill to open that vault,” he said.

“And that is bound to make a lot of noise.”

6. Elizabeth Siddal

When the wife of English artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti died from an opiate overdose in 1862, Rossetti buried a book of his poetry alongside her. Years later, and with his eyesight failing, making it harder to paint, he decided to retrieve the poems. For this, he needed permission from the Home Secretary, as grave-robberies were a big problem at the time. This was granted, though Rossetti wanted the operation to be kept as secret as possible. The grave slab at Highgate Cemetery in London was removed, the coffin prised open, and the manuscript removed and disinfected. He was said to be disappointed that the poem he had most wanted had a “great worm-hole through every page” – though a significant volume of poems from the exhumation did appear.

7. Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus asked in his will to be buried in America, but no suitable church existed there at his death in 1506, so he was buried initially in the Spanish city of Valladolid, then moved to a monastery in Seville. In 1542, however, the body was removed and sent to Hispaniola, where it was buried in Santo Domingo (now the capital of the Dominican Republic). At the end of the 17th Century, Spain ceded the western part of Hispaniola to France, so Columbus’s body was taken to Cuba. Then, when Cuba became independent, in 1898, the body crossed the Atlantic for a final time, and the body was buried in the Cathedral of Seville. At least, that is the established theory. There is, however, a box containing bones, inscribed with the name “Christopher Columbus” at a Columbus monument in the Dominican capital. Researchers who took DNA samples from the Seville body say it matches the DNA of Columbus’s brother Diego, also buried near Seville. The remains in Santo Domingo have never been released for testing.

8. Virginia Poe

Virginia Clemm married her first cousin, American author Edgar Allan Poe, at the age of 13, and died of tuberculosis at 24, in 1847. She was originally buried in the vault of the family from whom the Poes rented their cottage in Fordham, near Philadelphia. In 1875 the cemetery was destroyed, and a few years later one of Poe’s biographers, William Gill, took possession of her bones – apparently, just at the point the sexton was about to throw them away. For a while, Gill stored the bones in a box under his bed. Five years later they were buried with her husband’s in a tomb built for the author in 1875 in Westminster Hall and Burying Ground (now part of the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore) as a replacement for his original simple grave in the same burial ground.

9. Marie Curie

The ashes of Marie Curie and her husband Pierre were moved in 1995 from a small cemetery to the Pantheon in Paris. This was done in order to honor her life and work. The Polish-born scientist won two Nobel prizes and did ground-breaking work on radiation. She died from leukaemia in 1934 (caused by exposure to radiation).

10. Che Guevara

The Argentine-born Cuban revolutionary leader was captured and shot in Bolivia in 1967. For years the exact location of his body was kept secret, then in 1995 it was revealed by a Bolivian general involved in the operation that he had been buried by an airport runway, near the site where he was killed. Two years later, his body was exhumed and returned to Cuba in time for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of his death. It now lies in a mausoleum and museum to Guevara, which is open to visitors. Some questions have been raised, however, as to whether the correct body was exhumed in 1997.

And another ten…

  • Abraham Lincoln – coffin moved after failed grave-robbing, exhumed when new tomb is built
  • Tsar Nicholas II and family – shot and thrown in a pit in 1918, reburied 80 years later
  • Tutankhamun – Pharaoh who died in the 14th Century, tomb excavated in 1922
  • Simon Bolivar – South American independence leader exhumed in 2010 to test poisoning theory
  • Adolf Hitler – committed suicide in Berlin, buried in shell crater, reburied by Soviets in Magdeburg (apart from jaw and cranium)
  • Lee Harvey Oswald – killer of John F Kennedy, exhumed in 1981 to test theory he had been replaced by a Soviet double
  • Salvador Allende – Chilean president who committed suicide in 1973, exhumed in 2011 to test assassination theory
  • Cardinal Newman – conservative English cleric, died in 1890, grave found to be empty in 2008
  • Zachary Taylor – 12th US president, died 1850, exhumed in 1991 to test poisoning theory
  • Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu – Romanian president and wife, shot in 1989 revolution, exhumed in 2010 to confirm identity

Vilma Soltesz “too fat to fly” case: Delta and KLM sued by husband Janos Soltesz after she dies in Hungary

0

Janos Soltesz, husband of Vilma Soltesz, the woman who was too big to be flown home from Europe, where she later died, is to sue Delta and KLM airlines for damages.

Vilma Soltesz, who weighed about 420 lbs (193kg), was refused a place on two flights in October.

She died of kidney failure before a suitable flight could be found, after refusing treatment from local doctors.

Delta Airlines said every effort was made to accommodate her but it had been “physically unable” to get her aboard.

But Peter Ronai, the lawyer acting for her husband, Janos Soltesz, told CBS: “They [the airlines] took on the responsibility to get her to Hungary, it’s their responsibility to get her back.”

Vilma Soltesz needed to return to New York from her holiday home in Hungary to resume medical treatment.

She suffered from kidney disease and diabetes and reportedly “did not trust” Hungarian doctors.

But the Dutch airline KLM was unable to get her on board a flight on which she had booked two seats to accommodate her.

Vilma Soltesz was then told to drive to Prague in the Czech Republic where she would be given seats on a larger Delta Airlines flight.

But, according to Peter Ronai, she was unable to be belted into that plane and “the captain came out of the cockpit and made her get off”.

Vilma Soltesz died of kidney failure before an alternative flight could be found.

In a statement Delta Airlines and KLM said they had done everything possible to assist the family.

“Our records indicate Delta staff in Prague made repeated attempts for nearly an hour to board the customer, but they were unable to get her onboard the aircraft,” Delta claimed.

Janos Soltesz is seeking $6 million (4.6 million euros) in damages from Delta and KLM.

Nocturnal Scintillans: Bondi Beach “Red Sea” as rare algae bloom turns water the color of blood

0

Tourists heading for famous Bondi Beach were left high and dry today after a rare natural phenomenon turned the water blood red.

Bondi was among several popular beaches in and around Sydney, Australia, which had to be closed after a huge algae bloom transformed the sea into something resembling a scene from a Jaws movie.

But despite the warnings a number of intrepid beachgoers were seen venturing into the water and swimming through the red surface, Ten News Sydney reported.

The natural phenomenon is caused when algae, a plant-like organism flourishes and large groups of the miniscule plants, which can appear in various colors, gather together often with spectacular results.

Known as Nocturnal Scintillans or sea sparkle it has no toxic effects but people are still advised to avoid swimming in areas with discolored water because the algae, which can be high in ammonia, can cause skin irritation.

British tourists were among large groups of visitors who were told by lifeguards not to enter the water until the all-clear was given because the algae can irritate the skin and cause other health problems.

Ken Roberts, 23, from Birmingham, England said: “Perhaps I’m just in the wrong country – I thought the Red Sea was somewhere in Asia.”

Local lifeguard Bruce Hopkins said: “It has quite a fishy smell to it.

“It makes the water look like it has a coating of tomato-sauce colored oil.”

The algae has already disappointing thousands who had headed to the coast to cool off as the summer Down Under finally gets under way of a prolonged cold period.

The New South Wales (NSW) Office of Water has been carrying out a series of tests to discover what caused the bloom.

One theory is that it was caused by an upwelling of colder nutrient-rich water.
A spokesman said that the blooms, sometime referred to as “red tides”, are more common around spring and autumn when the water temperature is higher and there are greater movements in ocean currents.

Large numbers of fish are believed to have perished from the effects of the algae.

A spokesman for the local council said red algae could be dangerous to some humans exposed to it.

“There are some possible risks to human health including skin rashes and eye irritation and for this reason the beach will remain closed until the algae dissipates,” he said.

Tourists and locals are hoping that the algae will have dissipated by the weekend, when temperatures are expected to reach 40c.

Ketone Drink could help you lose weight and could treat diabetes, epilepsy and even Alzheimer’s

0

A new drink containing ketones could not only help you lose weight, but could also treat epilepsy, diabetes and possibly even Alzheimer’s.

It might also be an incredible energy booster. When a group of international rowing champions took it, one of them beat a world record.

It sounds far too good to be true, but the drink’s scientific credentials are impeccable.

It’s been developed by Kieran Clarke, professor of physiological biochemistry at Oxford University and head of its Cardiac Metabolism Research Group, at the behest of the U.S. Army.

Equally amazing is that the drink doesn’t involve a new drug. It contains something our bodies produce all the time.

This key ingredient is ketones – the tiny, but powerful sources of energy our bodies make naturally when we start using up our fat stores for energy because there are no carbs around.

We all have slightly raised ketone levels before breakfast because we haven’t eaten for a while. And if you fast for a few days or go on an Atkins-type high-fat diet, your body will start pumping out ketones. They are nature’s way of keeping you supplied with energy – especially your brain and muscles.

The clever trick Prof. Kieran Clarke has pulled off is to have found a way to make ketones in the lab. This means that instead of having to follow difficult diets (with unpleasant side-effects such as constipation and bad breath), you can just add ketones to a normal diet – in the form of the Drink, as it’s known.

It’s a radical new approach, which flies in the face of more than 30 years of advice that a low-fat diet with lots of carbohydrates is the best way to lose weight, treat diabetes and protect your heart. It also raises questions about the demonizing of diets such as Atkins, which are blamed for causing constipation and kidney failure.

IT TRICKS YOUR BODY INTO BURNING OFF FAT

So how do ketones help? They are the reason why high-fat diets such as Atkins seem to work so well. Without the energy from carbohydrates, your body starts releasing stored fat, which the liver turns into ketones for energy.

The pounds drop off faster than with a low-fat diet because you are actively burning up stored fat. But there are other benefits of these ketogenic diets, as they are called. Blood sugar levels come down because you are eating hardly any carbohydrates.

In a study published earlier this year, Prof. Kieran Clarke found that rats given the new ketone compound ate less and put on less weight than those getting the same amount of calories from a high-fat or a high-carbohydrate diet.

In the first trial Prof. Kieran Clarke has run on humans with diabetes, completed within the past few months, the effects were also impressive. In the week-long study, eight people with diabetes had three ketone drinks a day as well as their normal diet.

As with the rats, their weight dropped (an average of nearly 2% of their body weight), but so did their glucose levels, cholesterol and the amount of fat in the blood. The amount of exercise they did went up as they had more energy. However, the study was small and as yet unpublished.

To anyone with diabetes, the idea of ketones being good seems extraordinary. That’s because they are usually warned that high ketones can be very dangerous. In fact, the danger is limited to cases where the diabetes isn’t controlled and the patient has very high blood sugar levels as well.
That’s rare these days with effective drugs. Indeed, very high-fat diets, which produce ketones, are being tested as a treatment for diabetes.

A new drink containing ketones could not only help you lose weight, but could also treat epilepsy, diabetes and possibly even Alzheimer’s

HELPING CHILDREN WITH EPILEPSY

The Drink has its roots in ketogenic diets, which are designed to raise ketone production. One medical area where a very high-fat ketogenic diet is used as standard treatment is in childhood epilepsy.

A review by the Cochrane Collaboration found that in children who weren’t responding to drugs, it was as effective as medication would normally be.

This followed a major study conducted four years ago by Professor Helen Cross, a neurologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, which showed the diet was effective.

“About 30 per cent of epileptic children don’t respond to drugs and they can have a dreadful time – 100 fits a day is not uncommon,” says Susan Wood, a registered dietician who works for the charity Matthew’s Friends Clinics, which aims to make a high ketogenic diet available to all children who may benefit from it.

“We see a big drop in the number of seizures in nearly 40% of the children who go on the diet.”

It’s thought the diet helps suppress stimulation signals to the brain.

The problem is that ketogenic diets can be hard to follow. A typical high-fat diet for children with epilepsy, for instance, includes oil, butter, double cream, eggs, mayonnaise and cheese. Not to everyone’s taste.

Even more difficult on this sort of diet, you have almost no fruit or vegetables (most count as carbo-hydrates) – this can lead to mineral and vitamin shortages and a raised risk of heart disease from all the fat.

THE U.S. ARMY RIDES TO THE RESCUE

And this is where the U.S. Army comes in. Like other radical innovations, such as the internet, driverless cars and a battery-powered human “exoskeleton”, the ketone drink was the result of a commission from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is set up to research imaginative high-risk projects.

“Back in 2003 they were looking for an energy source that would improve soldiers’ mental and physical performance under battlefield conditions,” says Prof. Kieran Clarke.

“Troops weren’t taking enough rations into action because they filled their rucksacks with extra ammunition instead. As their blood glucose dropped, they became confused and sometimes ended up shooting their own side.”

Prof. Kieran Clarke had been working on ketones as a high energy source for more than a decade when she approached DARPA, who funded the research that allowed her to discover a way to make ketones in the lab.

“No one had done it before,” she says.

“We called it DeltaG, which is the biochemical name for energy, but also has a military ring to it – Delta Force and all.” She tried the new compound on rats and found it boosted physical and mental performance.

But that wasn’t all. The rats became much healthier. They lost body fat, had lower levels of triglycerides (fatty acids) in their blood and lower blood sugar levels. There were no signs of harmful side-effects.

U.S. defence chiefs are reportedly delighted with the Drink, but it’s expected to be a while before it’s taken up on a large scale by the Army.

So how does a drink that adds ketones help you lose weight if you’re not burning fat to produce those ketones in the first place? It is because ketones make you less hungry – they damp down hunger centres in the brain. This means you eat less and so you have the same weight loss as on a high-fat diet.

Meanwhile, because you’re eating less, your blood sugar levels come down (which is good for diabetics).

LOSE WEIGHT AND HAVE MORE ENERGY

Eighteen months ago, Prof. Kieran Clarke tried her ketones on rowers.

DeltaG ketones come in a thick, clear liquid that is very bitter, so in the trials on rats and humans, it has a little water added along with orange-coloured flavouring plus some sweeteners to make it more palatable – in this form it’s known as the Drink.

A group of top international rowers were given it shortly before they rowed on fixed machines in a lab.

After half an hour of hard rowing, those getting the Drink had rowed on average 50 m further in the same time than when they had a dummy drink. This was an improvement of 0.5%. It can be the difference between silver and gold.

Dr. Scott Drawer, head of research at UK Sport, who helped design the trial, said: “Ketones have been ignored as an energy source in sport. We need to look at them seriously.”

DON’T WORRY ABOUT SIDE-EFFECTS

The big idea of the Drink is that it is a way to get the benefits of weight loss and metabolic improvements that come with raised ketones without going through the pain of the diet.

But what about the dangers of high levels of ketones? Ketogenic diets are linked with constipation (through lack of roughage) and sometimes bad breath (the result of the way ketones happen to smell). Increased ketone levels may also lead to kidney failure, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease, according to NHS Direct.

Prof. Kieran Clarke believes fears about raising ketone levels are based on a misunderstanding.

“Our bodies have a parallel system designed to make use of ketones as an energy source, which is faster and more efficient than the way our bodies use glucose. Gram for gram, ketones give you 38 per cent more energy than glucose,” she says.

“The trouble is we rarely need to use ketones because we are surrounded by food. But that’s happened only in the past 50 years when everyone has had enough to eat. Before that many people would often be ketogenic.”

The ketone pathway developed as a way to provide animals and humans with energy in times of famine; it’s only if someone has uncontrolled diabetes that raising ketones is dangerous.

BUT IT’S NOT AN EXCUSE TO BE LAZY

But what do other experts think? Dr. Rhys Evans, reader in physiology, anatomy and genetics at Keble College, Oxford says: “Ketones are a superb source of energy, so it makes perfectly good sense to use them as extra fuel for the brain and muscles.”

“Kieran has pulled off a neat chemical trick creating a new version in the lab. In metabolic terms, this offers some new and exciting possibilities.”

Epilepsy researcher Prof. Helen Cross adds: “Getting the new ketones could be a boon.”

When it comes to epilepsy, neurologists are concerned about the health risks of a high-fat diet, while sticking to it can be difficult for children – a ketone drink could be more appealing.

So why haven’t we heard about this before? It’s because ketones are a natural product that can’t be turned into a top-selling treatment, so no drug company is interested.

“We have a problem raising the money just to produce enough of it to run trials cheaply,” says Prof. Kieran Clarke (which is why you won’t see it in shops for some time).

She adds: “DeltaG is not a licence to stay glued to the TV eating take-aways. It provides 10% of your total calories (each drink is around 200 calories), so if you are going to lose weight you are going to have to cut that much from your diet or you would put on weight.

For best results, you should be eating a sensible, healthy diet, maybe some variation of the Mediterranean.”

And then there is the taste: “It tastes dreadful – just like the cold remedy Benylin – so you’d take it only if you had to,” says Prof. Kieran Clarke.

But losing weight without feeling hungry might prove pretty attractive!

Giant anaconda regurgitates a whole cow in Brazil

A giant anaconda regurgitating an entire animal in the Brazilian jungle has become a surprise online hit – despite its gruesome content.

Almost 66,000 people have watched the video on YouTube in just two days.

The footage shows the anaconda vomiting an animal that is completely undigested.

Although when the video was posted online, it suggested the hapless creature was a cow, commenters have debated whether the it is in fact a capybara.

The giant rodent, which is related to a guinea pig and weighs up to 66 kg (145 lbs), is native to South America and the preferred prey of the anaconda.

General David Petraeus’ daughter Anne beamed as she blogged about her Thanksgiving Day, spent with her new husband Matt Mauney – as the couple ran the “Turkey Trot” run near their home alongside her brother Steve.

Anne Petraeus, 30, showed no signs of the fallout over her father’s affair as she posted pictures of her Thanksgiving dinner on her website fannetasticfood.com.

A close friend of David Petraeus said the disgraced general spent Thanksgiving with Holly, his wife-of-38-years, as the couple try to rebuild their shattered marriage.

The friend said: “I spoke to David before Thanksgiving and wished him and Holly happy holidays. I think that things are dying down.”

Retired U.S. Army Col. Steve Boylan, a close friend of General David Petraeus and his former spokesman, had told how Holly Petraeus was “furious” at her husband’s betrayal.

Even though her husband was forced to resign over his shocking indiscretion, Holly Petraeus has been seen back at work with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where she is described as being a “tireless voice” for military families.

A spokesman for the organization said last week that she remains a “key leader” – despite the unwanted spotlight of her husband’s sex scandal – adding: “Mrs. Petraeus remains a key leader and valued employee of this organization. We will have no comment on her personal situation, nor will she release any statement.”

Col. Steve Boylan said General David Petraeus, 60, was still living at home in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife despite revelations of his eight-month affair with his biographer.

And describing Holly Petraeus, he said: “She is very classy, very unassuming. She has established herself and her own career in her own manner.

“She’s a very lovely lady, endearing. But she is also someone I would not want to get angry at me.

“It’s those reserved, quiet types you have to look out for. But she’s a joy to be around, a very gracious and caring individual.”

David Petraeus, America’s most celebrated military leader in a generation, stepped down on November 9 as head of the CIA after admitting to an affair with Paula Broadwell, a counter-terrorism expert and lieutenant-colonel in the Army Reserve who had co-authored a biography of the general.

The FBI stumbled upon the affair when Jill Kelley, a Florida socialite and friend of the Petraeus family, asked investigators to look into threatening emails that turned out to be from an apparently jealous Paula Broadwell.

Paula Broadwell, 40, spent Thanksgiving with her husband Dr. Scott Broadwell and their young sons.

A family friend confirmed: “Paula and Scott are working things out.

“They spent Thanksgiving together at a friend’s beach house with their children. Paula is laying low, she is concentrating on her marriage and her family, that is her priority now.”

Jill Kelley sacked as honorary consul for South Korea for peddling influence

0

Jill Kelley, the Florida socialite who exposed the affair which brought down CIA Director David Petraeus, has been sacked as an honorary consul for South Korea.

Jill Kelley, 37, was so proud of her status, which she was awarded thanks to her friendship with the country’s ambassador, that she had a custom licence plate made boasting of it.

But now the title has been taken away from her after a senior Korean official said she had tried to “peddle influence” in a way that was “inappropriate”.

Jill Kelley, a Tampa housewife who works as an “unpaid social liaison” at MacDill Air Force Base, unwittingly sparked the Petraeus scandal telling the FBI about “threatening” emails she had received from author Paula Broadwell.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Paula Broadwell had been having an affair with David Petraeus, who was subsequently forced to resign as director of the CIA.

Jill Kelley was appointed honorary consul for South Korea in August after becoming close to former ambassador Han Duk-Soo, who is said to be troubled by his unwitting role in the Petraeus affair.

When he recommended her for the post, he apparently alluded to her links with senior officials such as David Petraeus and General John Allen, who was dragged into the scandal when it emerged that he and Jill Kelley had exchanged thousands of emails.

As well as sporting a licence plate describing her as “Honorary Consul”, Jill Kelley requested “diplomatic protection” from media camped outside her door in the wake of David Petraeus’ resignation.

So she will doubtless be devastated to learn than the title has been withdrawn, according to the country’s deputy foreign minister Kim Kyou-hyun.

During a visit to Washington, he told the Yonhap news agency that Jill Kelley would no longer be allowed to hold the $2,500-a-year job.

“It’s not suitable to the status of honorary consul that [she] sought to be involved in commercial projects and peddle influence,” Kim Kyou-hyun said.

“It’s also inappropriate as honorary consul.”

A New York businessman said Jill Kelley was introduced to him at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August as someone whose friendship with David Petraeus would help facilitate a no-bid deal with South Korea on a coal-gasification project.

Jill Kelley would supposedly be in a position to help broker the billion-dollar deal directly with the Korean president, and expected a two percent commission, said Adam Victor, president and CEO of TransGas Development Systems.

She also tried to establish a relationship between South Korea and the University of South Florida’s medical school.

It had previously emerged that Jill Kelley was awarded a medal for “Outstanding Public Service” – the second highest honor available to a civilian – from the Joint Chiefs of Staff after she was recommended by David Petraeus himself.

After problems with the application, it was resubmitted in October 2010 by Marine General James Mattis, who had replaced David Petraeus as the head of U.S. Central Command.

David Petraeus then presented the award to Jill Kelley, whom he met through her work and lavish party planning for MacDill, at a ceremony in Washington on March 18, 2011.

The award citation noted the honor was for her public service to the U.S. Central Command, MacDill and the Department of Defense from October 31, 2008 to May 31, 2010. She received a silver medal, lapel pin, citation and certificate.

“Mrs. Kelley distinguished herself by exceptional service while supporting the mission of the United Central Command, building positive relationships between the military and the Tampa community, supporting community outreach, and advancing various military endeavors,” according to the award citation, seen by the Tampa Tribune.

It adds that her “willingness to host engagements with Senior National Representatives from more than 60 countries was indicative of her support for both the Coalition’s effort and the mission of United States Central Command”.

And her willingness to rub shoulders with the military’s top brass has become increasingly apparent since her part in the Petraeus scandal emerged over the past two weeks.

Jill Kelley has thrown expensive parties at her home for generals and local politicians, reportedly schmoozed with Barack Obama aides who then invited her to dinners at the White House and enjoyed taxpayer-funded flights on military aircraft.

“On multiple occasions, Mrs. Kelley invited Senior National Representatives, their spouses, and senior leaders to her home to demonstrate their gratitude and support,” the citation noted.

“These events promoted camaraderie, understanding and a better appreciation for Coalition and military customs, concerns and abilities.

“Her personal leadership and selfless contributions to our community generated a strong bond between our Coalition members and Tampa residents, which inspired acts of generosity and patriotism in others.”

Jill Kelley was also commended for helping David Petraeus when he first took over CentCom.

“She [was] instrumental in introducing the commander, early in his tenure, to local and state officials, particularly the mayor of Tampa and the governor of Florida,” according to the citation.

But her friendliness with military officials has also led to her undoing, after she was found to have exchanged “flirtatious” emails with General John Allen during the FBI probe into David Petraeus.

During the investigation, the FBI found 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails between Jill Kelley and the general, who is head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

It also emerged this week that she travelled on a military plane with General John Allen on at least one occasion. In other instances, she reportedly flew to Washington DC.

The investigation by 10 News Tampa found she enjoyed “numerous” flights, including on a KC-135 jet in May 2010.

“It’s an educational opportunity for people to just see what hard working military members are doing each day,” Lt. Col. Jack Miller said of the plane.

“It’s generally folks throughout the community that just have an interest in the instillation. Sometimes it’s just a matter of requesting to do it.”

The revelation came after Jill Kelley and her twin sister, Natalie Khawam, were invited to two “courtesy” meals in the Executive Mansion mess hall as a guest of a White House aide.

She met the mid-level aide through her work with MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, where she also rubbed shoulders with the military bosses including General David Petraeus.

On one further occasion, she received a White House tour with her family, the official added.

In further examples of her attempts to use her contacts to her advantage, Jill Kelley sent a string of pleading emails to the Tampa Mayor after the scandal broke, complaining she has been receiving threats and claiming: “The truth will one day prevail.”

The anguished messages, seen by the Tampa Bay Times, were sent to Bob Buckhorn, whom she knows socially, and claimed her children were scared and her husband had been forced to sleep at work.

The emails are the second instance of her trying to exploit her “position” – after she called the police asking for “diplomatic protection” from the media due to her role as honorary consul to South Korea.

“I’m an honorary consul general, so I have inviolability, so they should not be able to cross my property,” Jill Kelley told the 911 operator.

“I don’t know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well, because that’s against the law to cross my property because, you know, it’s inviolable.”

Gabriel Aubry displays injuries following brawl with Olivier Martinez

Images of Gabriel Aubry’s injuries following his brawl with Halle Berry’s new boyfriend, Olivier Martinez, have been released.

Gabriel Aubry, 36, can be seen displaying an extremely painful-looking and swollen black eye, along with cuts under his left eye and on his forehead and the bridge of his nose.

The model, who also has bloodied fingernails as a result of the fight, and has claimed Olivier Martinez threatened to kill him.

It doesn’t look like anything is set to simmer down between the pair, as Halle Berry’s ex-boyfriend has now obtained a restraining order against her fiancé following the Thanksgiving incident.

Gabriel Aubry was hospitalized with broken ribs and a bruised and swollen face following the fight, before he was charged with battery.

The model obtained the emergency protective order at a Los Angeles county court on Monday, according to TMZ. Documents reveal the order is valid until December 17.

Gabriel Aubry claimed in his declaration that the day before Thanksgiving, the family went to watch Nahla’s school play, and Olivier Martinez whispered in his ear in French: “I wish I could beat the s*** out of you right now.

“You’re lucky we’re in a school right now. We’re going to take Nahla right now and you’re not going to follow us.”

The next day Gabriel Aubry allegedly dropped Nahla off at Halle Berry’s and her door was opened by Olivier Martinez – even though a nanny usually acts as a go-between.

Gabriel Aubry claims Olivier Martinez said: “We need to talk,” and as he walked to his car, Martinez allegedly knocked him to the ground, took his head in his hand and slammed it on the concrete driveway, while accusing Aubry of “costing us $3 million” due to the custody battle.

The model goes on to claim that Olivier Martinez allegedly said: “We called the cops. You’re going to tell them that you’re the one who attacked me, or I’m going to kill you.”

He is hoping to prove his innocence with the help of CCTV footage, and said: “I told the officers that [Olivier Martinez] was the one who attacked me, and repeatedly told them to get the security tapes from Ms. Berry’s security cameras before she and Mr. Martinez deleted them.”

Gabriel Aubry has already been slapped with a restraining order of his own, meaning he has to stay 100 yards away from Olivier Martinez, Halle Berry, and his daughter with Berry, Nahla.

Meanwhile Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez were seen arriving home together after visiting their lawyers, and were also paid a visit by detectives. Earlier on Olivier Martinez had visited a hospital, displaying grazes on his knuckles.

It has been reported that Halle Berry’s lawyers will go to court this week in an attempt to have it extended.

In addition, it has been claimed that Gabriel Aubry could be deported back to his native Canada as a result of the fight.

A source told Radar Online: “Not only is Gabe dealing with the possibility of losing shared custody of his daughter, Nahla, and possible criminal charges, but the real possibility of being deported back to Canada because of the arrest.

“Gabe is in the United States on a work visa and anytime someone is arrested on child abuse, domestic violence, assault or battery charges the Immigration and Naturalization Services is contacted by law enforcement.”

The source explained: “During the time Gabe was being held at the police station he was asked if he was a United States citizen, and he said no. This is what triggered INS being contacted. It’s not a given that Gabe will be automatically deported, but it’s a very real possibility. He doesn’t need to be convicted in order to be deported, the arrest is enough to terminate his visa.”

The altercation came after a judge ruled that the star is not allowed to move 4-year-old Nahla to France, where she was hoping to uproot to in order to live with French actor Olivier Martinez.

And now Radar Online claims that the Los Angeles County Department of Child Protection services will be formally re-opening an abuse investigation involving Nahla.

A source told the website: “Detectives from the LAPD formally contacted CPS after Gabe’s arrest, because Nahla was present when the fight occurred.

“Nahla wasn’t actually involved in the melee, and by all accounts, Halle whisked her out of the driveway as soon as the fight between Olivier and Gabe started. However, DCFS was contacted because there has been a history of allegations of physical abuse.

“Social workers will be interviewing Halle, Gabriel and Olivier about what happened on Thanksgiving. DCFS must ensure that Nahla’s environment is safe.”

The day before the drama appeared to be getting to Halle Berry as she looked downcast as she emerged from her Los Angeles home.

Halle Berry has been attempting to keep her daughter distracted following the incident and took her to a children’s show on Friday.

Cyber Monday 2012 biggest ever online shopping day

Cyber Monday 2012 in the US is projected to be the biggest ever online shopping day, according to analysts.

Research firm Comscore said consumers would have spent $1.5 billion on so-called Cyber Monday, up 20% from last year.

Online-sales tracker IBM Benchmark put the internet shopping rise even higher – up nearly 27% compared with the Monday after Thanksgiving last year.

Smartphone and tablet computer sales rose 10.2%, said IBM Benchmark.

“Online’s piece of the holiday pie is growing every day, and all the key dates are growing with it,” Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru told Associated Press news agency.

“The web is becoming a more significant part of the traditional brick-and-mortar holiday shopping season.”

Online sales also jumped sharply on so-called Black Friday, which is the day after Thanksgiving.

Comscore said internet shopping rose by a quarter last Friday to break the $1 billion mark for the first time, while it was up by a third on Thanksgiving itself.

There was also a jump in consumer spending this Thanksgiving weekend compared with last year, retailers say.

A record 247 million people visited stores and websites between Thursday and Sunday, spending a total of $59.1 billion, 13% more than last year, the National Retail Federation (NRF) said.

The average shopper spent $423 over the weekend, up from $398 last year.

Despite the jump in sales over the weekend, there are concerns that the rise in spending over the festive period as a whole will be weaker this year.

The NRF has forecast a 4.1% increase in retail sales during November and December, less than the 5.6% jump recorded last year.

Angus T. Jones describes Two and a Half Men as “filth” urging viewers not to watch it

Angus T. Jones, actor in one of the biggest comedies on US television, Two and a Half Men, has described the show as “filth”, while urging viewers not to watch it.

In a video posted online by a Christian group, Angus T. Jones said he no longer wanted to take part.

Angus T. Jones explained that the show’s raunchy humor conflicted with his recent bible studies.

Angus T. Jones, who has been in the show since he was 10, said viewers should question the impact such programmes had on them.

The clip was posted by the Forerunner Christian Church in California, where Angus Jones, who reportedly makes $350,000 an episode, says he sought spiritual guidance.

“I’m on Two and a Half Men and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it,” he says in the online video.

“Please stop filling your head with filth. Please. It’s, you know, people say it’s just entertainment.”

He adds: “Do some research on the effects of television and your brain and I promise you you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to the television and especially with what you watch on television. It’s bad news. It’s bad news.”

Warner Bros Television, which produces the show, and CBS, which airs it, has made no comment.

In Two and a Half Men, which has run for nine seasons, Angus T. Jones is the underachieving son of an uptight father, played by Jon Cryer.

The series originally starred Charlie Sheen as the womanizing uncle of Angus T. Jones’s character.

But Charlie Sheen was fired in March last year after a bizarre rant against the show’s lead writer, and Ashton Kutcher replaced him.
