Kate Middleton and Princes William and Harry at Warner Bros. Studios inauguration in Leavesden

Kate Middleton and Princes William and Harry had a wizard Harry Potter experience today as they attended the inauguration of the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, UK.

The highlights of their visit include a trip to the Great Hall, a special effects demonstration on Diagon Alley and even a wand lesson in The Gryffindor Common Room.

Kate Middleton, who is due to give birth in July, wore a short £38 ($59) polka dot dress by TOPSHOP and black suede heels with a black Ralph Lauren jacket pushed up at the sleeves.

The trio have brought with them to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, 500 guests, both children and adults, associated with some of the charities they support.

The royal party were first shown props and costumes from the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Princes William and Harry were clearly taken with a camouflaged Batmobile known as the Tumbler.

Prince William turned to his brother and whispered: “We should borrow that for the weekend.” He then climbed inside and turned on the engine, revving it to within an inch of its life.

When Prince William finally emerged from the Batmobile after a long while he said: “I’m a very happy man” but when he spotted his wife the royal apologized saying: “Sorry, sorry.”

Clearly a fan, the future king then couldn’t resist climbing on board the Bat Bike and posing for the cameras as Harry looked on enviously. Both brothers own their own superbikes – but clearly nothing on this level.

The three royals also spent time examining Batman’s heavy rubber armor.

“Is this really what the actor wore, how heavy is it?” Prince William asked.

He was astonished to discover it took 25 minutes for actor Christian Bale to put on.

The royals headed over to a “green screen” where draftsman Ed Symon was seated on another model of the Batpod motorbike sited on top of a “six axis motion base”. It was originally built for the broomstick flying in Harry Potter movies.

John Richardson special effects supervisor on the movies, said: “We’ve had everyone on it from Harry Potter to Voldemort.”

There, Prince William took to the controls of the simulator making the Batpod move up and around as if it was flying.

The visit will culminate with them hosting a most unusual meeting for their Charities Forum in the Great Hall, one of the original sets from the Harry Potter film series.

The Charities Forum is a collection of charities, of which The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are Patrons.

Started in 2006, it provides a platform for collaborative activity between the 35 participating charities and organizations who meet twice a year to discuss ideas and ways to support each other.

During the first part of today’s Studio tour, Kate Middleton and Princes William and Harry also met some of the creative teams from recent Warner Bros. Productions and were given an insight into the film making process as well as being shown some of the props and costumes from those films.

Warner Bros.’ £100 million ($160 million) facility, the first of its kind to be built in the UK in 70 years, accounts for a third of the dedicated major feature film production stage space in the UK.

It is the only film studio in the country to be owned and operated by a major Hollywood studio.

Formerly the production home of all eight Harry Potter films, Goldeneye, Star Wars Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, the state-of-the-art studios now encompass nine sound stages, a 100 acre back-lot and one of the largest underwater filming tanks in Europe. It is available to all kinds of productions, not just Warner Bros., from commercials to music videos, TV shows to feature films.

The first production to shoot there since the redevelopment was All You Need Is Kill, directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter takes guests behind the scenes of the Harry Potter films and showcases the incredible British talent, creativity and artistry that went into bringing the series to life.

Jiang Lantan: Chinese car-jacking victim known as Danny speaks about his meeting with Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev

5

Danny, aka Jiang Lantan, is a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur whose Mercedes was carjacked by Boston Marathon bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev last Thursday evening.

The incident occurred at almost 11p.m. when the man, who has asked to only be identified by his American nickname Danny, but now known by Chinese bloggers as Jiang Lantan, had just pulled his car to the curb on Brighton Avenue, Boston.

While Danny was texting, a man in dark clothes approached his car and knocked on the window. Before the driver could react the man had unlocked the door, climbed in and was brandishing a silver handgun, according to the Boston Globe.

The man, who would later be identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, asked Danny if he had followed the news about Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings.

“I did that,” said the man.

“And I just killed a policeman in Cambridge.”

Danny says he has been able to fill in important blanks between the murder of MIT police officer Sean Collier, just before 10:30 p.m. on April 18, and the Watertown shootout that ended just before 1 a.m. with the death of Tamerlan Tsarnaev and the serious wounding of his brother Dzhokhar, 19.

Jiang Lantan has described a truly harrowing ordeal which included a bizarre mix of bursts of life-threatening violence and everyday conversation on mundane subjects such as girls, how much payments on his Mercedes ML 350 were, the iPhone5 and whether anyone still listens to CDs.

At one point Tamerlan Tsarnaev told Danny not to look at his face, to he said he would not remember his face.

The bomb suspect replied: “It’s like white guys, they look at black guys and think all black guys look the same. And maybe you think all white guys look the same.”

In another moment during the carjacking, the suspects were disappointed that Danny did not have any CDs in his car. They flipped through the radio avoiding news stations and later put on a CD of chatting after they had made a stop.

To begin with Jiang Lantan was driving his car with Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the passenger seat beside him, while Dzhokhar following behind in a sedan. Later the brother’s moved all the gear into Danny’s car and Tamerlan drove.

The late-night drive lasted an hour and a half. At one stage during his ordeal, Danny says a friend called him on his phone and he was told by Tamerlan Tsarnaev that he would be killed if he spoke to the person in Chinese.

“Death is so close to me,” said Danny, recalling his thinking at the time.

“I don’t want to die.”

“I have a lot of dreams that haven’t come true yet,” said the student from central China, who attended a graduate school at Northeastern University before joining a tech start-up company.

Jiang Lantan had come to the US in 2009 for a master’s degree and graduated in January 2012, before returning to China to await a work visa.

He had returned two months ago, however he chose to told Tamerlan Tsarnaev that he was still a student and had been in the US barely a year.

Jiang Lantan says the brothers had some difficulty understanding his English when he tried to tell them he was from China.

“Oh, that’s why your English is not very good,” said Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

“OK, you’re Chinese… I’m a Muslim.”

“Chinese are very friendly to Muslims!” Danny said.

“We are so friendly to Muslims.”

Danny also revealed that could hear the brothers openly discussing driving to New York, although he couldn’t make out if they were planning another attack or just looking to escape.

Fortunately for Danny there was a problem because his car was almost out of gas and then a set of circumstances played out which afforded him an opportunity to escape his captors.

In search of petrol they stopped at a Shell Station and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was forced to go inside the Shell Food Mart to pay for petrol.

When Tamerlan Tsarnaev put his gun in the door pocket to fiddle with a navigation device, Danny seized his moment to escape.

“I was thinking I must do two things: unfasten my seatbelt and open the door and jump out as quick as I can. If I didn’t make it, he would kill me right out, he would kill me right away.”

He unbuckled his seat belt, opened the door, then slammed it behind, and sprinted off at an angle that would be a hard shot for any marksman.

“F***!” he heard Tamerlan Tsarnaev saying, but the man did not follow.

Jiang Lantan reached the safe haven of a Mobil station across the street and sought cover in a supply room, while he shouted at the clerk to call 911.

Authorities have said that Danny’s quick-thing escape allowed police to swiftly track down the Mercedes, abating a possible attack by the Tsarnaev brothers on New York City and precipitating a wild shootout in Watertown that killed Tamerlan and left a severely injured Dzhokhar hiding in the neighborhood.

After an hour of talking to police – as the shootout and manhunt erupted in Watertown -Danny was brought to East Watertown for a “drive-by lineup”, studying faces of detained suspects in the street from the safety of a cruiser.

He did not recognize the suspects in the line-up. He spent the night talking to local and state police and the FBI before being dropped at home at 3 p.m. the next afternoon.

Jiang Lantan said, when he was back in Cambridge, after questioning: “I think, Tamerlan is dead, I feel good, obviously safer. But the younger brother – I don’t know.”

Danny had wondered if Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had discovered his address and would come looking for him. But the police knew the wallet and registration were still in the bullet-riddled Mercedes, and that a wounded Dzhokhar could not have gone far.

That night, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was caught, ending a harrowing week across Greater Boston and in particular for Jiang Lantan.

Amanda Bynes shaves half of her head for a new undercut hairstyle

Amanda Bynes has decided to ditch the matted extensions in favor of a fashion-forward undercut after shaving half of her head.

And, of course, she debuted her new look on Twitter.

Amanda Bynes, 27, posted: “I buzzed half my head like @cassie! No more old photos! This is the new me! I love it!”

The former Nickelodeon star follows in the footsteps of R&B singer Cassie, rocker Ellie Goulding and model Alice Dellal, who have all sported similar hairstyles.

The relatively polished look is a far cry from the mess of tangled extensions Amanda Bynes previously bared on frequent strolls through New York City.

Amanda Bynes has become quite a controversial figure since her departure from acting and subsequent move to the East Coast.

Most recently Amanda Bynes baffled readers of In Touch by telling the magazine that she’s “in the Mary-Kate and Ashley type of wealth” despite being worth an estimated $5 to $6 million compared to the twins’ $300 million.

What is Sarin?

Sarin, one of a group of nerve gas agents invented by German scientists as part of Hitler’s preparations for World War II, is an extremely toxic substance that disrupts the nervous system, overstimulating muscles and vital organs.

It can be inhaled as a gas or absorbed through the skin. In high doses, Sarin suffocates its victims by paralyzing the muscles around their lungs. Sarin was called “the poor man’s atomic bomb” due to large number of people that can be killed by a small amount.

One hundred milligrams of Sarin (about one drop) can kill the average person in a few minutes if he or she’s not given an antidote.

Sarin, or GB, or Isopropylmethanefluorophosphonate, is an organophosphorus compound with the formula [(CH3)2CHO]CH3P(O)F. It is a colorless, odorless liquid.

Sarin was discovered in 1938 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld in Germany by two German scientists attempting to create stronger pesticides; it is the most toxic of the four G-agents made by Germany.

The compound, which followed the discovery of the nerve agent tabun, was named in honor of its discoverers: Schrader, Ambros, Rüdiger and Van der Linde.

In mid-1939, the formula for the agent was passed to the chemical warfare section of the German Army Weapons Office, which ordered that it be brought into mass production for wartime use. A number of pilot plants were built, and a high-production facility was under construction (but was not finished) by the end of World War II.

Experts say Sarin is more than 500 times as toxic as cyanide.

Like other nerve agents, Sarin functions by competitive inhibition of the enzyme acetyl cholinesterase. This enzyme is found at synapses and nerve endings where it breaks hydrolyses the neurotransmitter Acetyl choline so that the nerve impulse is only transmitted once as required. When the enzyme is inhibited acetyl choline accumulates at nerve endings. This has various unpleasant effects leading to paralysis (where accumulation occurs at motor neurones) and eventually death by means such as asphyxiation.

Initial symptoms following exposure to sarin are a runny nose, tightness in the chest and constriction of the pupils. Soon after, the victim has difficulty breathing and experiences nausea and drooling. As the victim continues to lose control of bodily functions, the victim vomits, defecates and urinates. This phase is followed by twitching and jerking. Ultimately, the victim becomes comatose and suffocates in a series of convulsive spasms.

Death may follow in one minute after direct ingestion of a lethal dose unless antidotes, typically atropine and pralidoxime, are quickly administered.

Huge secret stockpiles of Sarin were built up by superpowers during Cold War.

Sarin can only be manufactured in a laboratory, but does not require very sophisticated equipment.

North Korea fails to respond to South Korea’s calls for Kaesong talks

North Korea has not responded to South Korea’s calls for formal talks on resuming operations at the joint Kaesong Industrial Complex, officials in Seoul say.

On Thursday, Seoul gave the North 24 hours to agree to talks on the Kaesong Industrial Complex, warning of “grave measures” if its offer was ignored.

South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye has called a security meeting to discuss next steps, Yonhap news agency reported.

North-South tensions are high following Pyongyang’s nuclear test in February.

Pyongyang blocked South Korean access to the site and pulled out its 53,000 workers earlier this month.

“We are keeping close tabs on all developments, but the North has not expressed its position so far,” South Korean Ministry of Unification spokesman Kim Hyung-suk said, shortly before the noon deadline.

“All that remains is for the North to make its decision to resolve the issue,” he added.

A report on South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing presidential palace spokesman Yoon Chang-jung, said President Park Geun-hye had scheduled a meeting with foreign affairs and security ministers at 15:00 local time on the matter.

The remaining 175 South Koreans still in the complex are believed to be running out of food and medicines, because the North has refused to allow fresh supplies from the South into the industrial park, which is located inside North Korea.

The South Korean government has refused to spell out what measures it may take, but there is speculation that it may be considering pulling out its remaining citizens from the complex.

However, that would leave South Korean assets open to seizure by the North Korean authorities, as happened before at a moth-balled tourism site run by the two countries.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was aware of the South’s call for talks, and “sincerely [hoped] the operation of the complex [could] return to normal as soon as possible through dialogue,” a UN spokesman said on Thursday.

Kaesong Industrial Complex, which was launched in 2003 as a sign of North-South co-operation, was the biggest contributor to inter-Korean trade and provided the North with much-needed hard currency.

Ramenskiy hospital fire kills at least 38 people in Russia

At least 38 people are feared dead after a fire swept through a psychiatric hospital in the Moscow region, Russian officials say.

The blaze started shortly after 02:00 local time at the No 14 hospital in Ramenskiy village.

Most of the victims are believed to be local patients. There are fears that the death toll could rise further.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated, with one report saying it was caused by a short circuit.

The fire broke out in part of the building where patients with severe conditions lived, local officials were quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

“According to preliminary reports, 38 people were killed, including two medical staff,” Health Ministry spokesman Oleg Salagai told Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency.

Firefighters later extinguished the blaze and have so far found 12 bodies.

A local official was quoted as saying that all the windows had metal bars, and most of the victims were found in their beds.

A nurse managed to lead to safety two patients.

It is believed that 41 people were in the hospital when the fire began.

Syria may have used sarin gas in chemical weapons against rebels

Syria may have used chemical weapons against rebels, the White House has said.

US intelligence agencies believe “with varying degrees of confidence” that the nerve agent sarin had been deployed on a “small scale”, and did not say where or when it had been used.

The White House has warned chemical weapons use would be a “red line” for possible intervention, but says this intelligence does not represent proof.

Republicans in Congress called on Thursday for a strong US response.

The assessment was made in letters to lawmakers on Thursday signed by Miguel Rodriguez, White House director of the office of legislative affairs.

“Our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin,” one of the letters said.

But it added: “Given the stakes involved, and what we have learned from our own recent experiences, intelligence assessments alone are not sufficient – only credible and corroborated facts that provide us with some degree of certainty will guide our decision-making.”

The phrase “varying degrees of confidence” is normally used to reflect differences in opinion within the intelligence community.

Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters in Abu Dhabi that the use of sarin “violates every convention of warfare”.

Secretary of State John Kerry said there had been two instances of chemical weapons use in Syria.

The UK Foreign Office echoed the US claims, saying it had “limited but persuasive information from various sources” of chemical weapons use in Syria.

It is understood that Britain obtained samples from inside Syria that have been tested by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down, Wiltshire.

“Material from inside Syria tested positive for sarin,” a Foreign Office spokesman said.

Syria is believed to possess large quantities of chemical weapons and there has been heightened concern among the international community in recent months about the safety of the stockpiles.

Although there have been numerous accusations, there has so far not been any confirmation that chemical weapons have been used during Syria’s two-year-old conflict.

President Barack Obama warned in December that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would face “consequences” if he used such weapons.

The letters released on Thursday were sent to powerful US senators John McCain and Carl Levin.

In response, Senator John McCain told reporters: “It’s pretty obvious that red line has been crossed.”

John McCain recommended arming the opposition, a step the White House has been reluctant to take. He also urged taking steps to ensure that Syria’s chemical weapons did not fall into the wrong hands.

“It does not mean boots on the ground,” the Arizona senator added.

Democrat Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, called for international action to help secure Syria’s stockpile of chemical arms.

Robert Menendez, the Democratic Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said options included “an internationally recognized no-fly zone, providing lethal assistance to vetted opposition forces, and sanctioning the transfer of arms to the regime”.

White House officials said the US would consult with allies and seek more evidence to confirm their intelligence.

On Tuesday, a senior Israeli military official accused Syrian forces of having used the nerve agent sarin against rebels several times. People can normally recover from small doses.

Speaking at a security conference in Jerusalem, Brigadier General Itai Brun cited photographs of victims foaming at the mouth and with constricted pupils and other unspecified symptoms.

Syria’s government and rebels have accused each other of using chemical weapons. A UN team is trying to enter Syria to investigate.

Sarin is a colorless and highly toxic nerve agent that can cause convulsions, paralysis and death within minutes if it is absorbed through inhalation, ingestion, or contact with skin or eyes.

According to the UN, at least 70,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict.

George W. Bush Presidential Center Dedication: Five living American presidents and their wives gather in Dallas for ceremony

Five living American presidents and their wives gathered in Dallas Thursday to honor the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

All presidents – George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter – were cheered by a crowd of former White House officials and world leaders as they took the stage together to open the dedication. They were joined on stage by their wives – the nation’s current and former first ladies – for the outdoor ceremony on a sun-splashed Texas morning.

“To know the man is to like the man,” President Barack Obama said of his predecessor.

“He is a good man.”

The last time all five living presidents were together was shortly before Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009, when he said he needed their advice before taking office.

“We’ve been called the world’s most exclusive club – and we do have a pretty nice club house – but the truth is, it’s more like a support group,” Barack Obama said.

Five living American presidents and their wives gathered in Dallas Thursday to honor the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center

The leaders were putting aside the profound ideological differences that have divided them for years for a day of pomp and pleasantries.

For George W. Bush, 66, the ceremony also marked his unofficial return to the public eye four years after the end of his deeply polarizing presidency.

Bill Clinton, who spoke just before Barack Obama, revealed that George W. Bush would call him “a couple of times a year in his second term… just to talk politics”.

He drew laughs from the crowd as he added: “Dear God, I hope there is no record of those conversations in this vast and beautiful building.”

Bill Clinton also joked about the perception that he has grown so close to the Bush family that he has become their “black sheep son”.

“My mother told me not to talk too long today – and Barbara, I will not let you down,” Bill Clinton quipped, referring to George W. Bush’s 87-year-old mother.

George W. Bush was equally light-hearted as he took the podium on Thursday.

“Alexander Hamilton once worried about ex-presidents wandering among the people like discontented ghosts,” he said.

“Actually I think we seem pretty happy.”

Despite his humor, George W. Bush was clearly emotional about the dedication.

He choked up toward the end of his remarks as he declared that he believes the nation’s best days are ahead.

Standing in an exact replica of the Oval Office in the museum honoring him earlier Thursday, George W. Bush uttered a quick and definitive “No” to a question of whether he missed his old job.

“I had all the fame and power I needed for eight years and Laura and I knew when our time was up… It was time to go home,” George Bush told Matt Lauer during a broadcast tour through a museum depicting his presidency.

He said the museum, which will be unveiled to the public on Thursday, is meant to explain the events that led up to some of his most controversial decisions – not to “defend” or “argue” those decisions.

“The whole purpose is to lay out the facts as I saw them at the time,” he said.

Items on display at the George W. Bush Presidential Center

“Because ultimately, history will judge whether critics are right or wrong. But this is a place to educate people.”

In designing the museum, George W. Bush said: “I never thought about my critics. I thought about just laying out for the American people the events that began the 21st century and let them understand what it’s like to make a decision, talk about the different events that took place, talk about some of the successes and some of the failures.”

Former first lady Laura Bush interjected that the museum is also meant to illustrate the difficulties of sorting through conflicting guidance from a variety of advisers – and also the challenge of being “prodded” by the press along the way.

“<<Prodded>> is a polite word,” Laura Bush quipped, laughing.

George Bush also said he empathizes with President Barack Obama’s tough job in uplifting the country from tragedies like the Boston bombings.

Another emotional moment came as George Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, spoke to the crowd and then rose out of his wheelchair with the help of his wife and son.

“It’s a beautiful day in Dallas and it’s a great pleasure to be here,” the elder Bush said.

“This is very special to Babara and me.”

“I wish the president all the best in dealing with the trauma and the heartbreak, because I understand that part of the job of being president is the <<comforter-in-chief>>,” he said.

George W. Bush knows that role all too well after experiencing the September 11, 2001 terror attacks while he was president.

“I became a war-time president, something I didn’t want to be,” he said.

He recalled the moment that his then-chief of staff, Andy Card, interrupted him while he was reading a story to an elementary classroom in Florida to tell him about the attack.

“My job became clarified that minute in the classroom, and that is to protect the homeland,” George W. Bush said.

Items on display in the new presidential library include a pistol that was captured with Saddam Hussein on December 13, 2003 and a pair of cowboy boots commemorating George W. Bush’s tenure as general managing partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Also on display is the bullhorn President George W. Bush used to speak to firefighters and emergency crews at Ground Zero after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In a series of interviews before his Presidential library and museum is unveiled, George Bush also said he was “very comfortable” with his decision to go to war in Iraq.

VP Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush had a strained relationship, as Bush was concerned over the public’s general belief that Cheney was a puppet master, controlling the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through a presidential conduit.

As the New York Times reported in 2010, George Bush also considered dropping Dick Cheney from the Republican ticket in 2004 to “demonstrate I was in charge”, the former president wrote in his memoir.

When asked about his darkest days in office, George W. Bush responded that 9/11 was of course difficult. Also hard? “Trying to be the comforter in chief, trying to mend broken hearts.”

“There were things I didn’t want to deal with,” he said.

He also said that the decision to sign off on the bailout was “frustrating and difficult”, though riding on the advice from Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke put him more at ease.

“Katrina was tough,” he added.

“And you see human suffering firsthand.”

George W. Bush also spoke on the uniqueness of the museum, as his was the first presidency that relied heavily on digital communication, such as emails and texts.

The former president said that he never sent an email in his eight years in office, however, because he was “fearful of Congress’ intrusion into [his] emails” and the possibility that he could be subpoenaed.

Dominic Lakhan: Lindsay Marie Boehner’s fiancé is a Jamaican-born construction worker once arrested for possessing marijuana

0

Dominic Lakhan, the Jamaican-born fiancé of House Speaker John Boehner’s daughter, Lindsay Marie, pictured just weeks before their upcoming nuptials next month.

Dominic Lakhan, a 38-year-old construction worker, was spotted enjoying a McDonalds in Florida recently, with his dreadlocks piled high on his head underneath a knitted cap.

Lindsay Marie Boehner’s fiancé has been arrested for possessing marijuana in the past. This may not have gone down well with John Boehner – who is a staunch opponent to legalizing the drug.

Dominic Lakhan and Lindsay Marie Boehner, 35, are set to marry on May 10 in Delray Beach, Florida.

In 2006, Dominic Lakhan was arrested in Pembroke Pines, Florida for misdemeanor possession of two grams of marijuana during a traffic stop, the National Enquirer first reported.

The police report from the incident states that “upon making contact with the driver”, an officer “observed in plain view a 16 oz. Natural Lite beer can opened in the driver door”.

The officer “also detected the odor of burnt cannabis emitting from the interior of the vehicle”, the police report continues.

“A search of the vehicle revealed two bags containing approximately TWO grams of suspected cannabis… inside the center of the ashtray.”

The arresting officer reported that Dominic Lakhan admitted to possessing the marijuana and said it was for personal use.

Court records show Dominic Lakhan, who is originally from Jamaica, was also arrested in 2003 for possession of an open container while driving.

Lindsay Marie Boehner lives in a four-bedroom home in Hollywood, Florida, less than an hour from Dominic Lakhan’s home in Delray Beach.

John Boehner has one other daughter, 32-year-old Tricia, who lives in Ohio with her husband, James Kinney.

The House Speaker, a Republican representing Ohio, has said in the past that he is “unalterably opposed” to legalizing marijuana, even for medical purposes.

“Whether it is the American Medical Association, the American Cancer Society – all of those people, by and large don’t believe there is any medicinal value in marijuana,” John Boehner told CNN in 2009.

Obama Family Tattoo: If Malia and Sasha get inked the President and First Lady will too

0

Barack Obama has warned his daughters Malia and Sasha that if they get tattoos, he and his wife Michelle will get matching ones on the same place on their bodies.

In an interview on NBC’s Today show, President Barack Obama said he hoped the “family tattoo” threat would discourage teen rebellion.

Barack Obama said he had warned Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, that he and First Lady Michelle Obama would show off their matching tattoos on YouTube.

The girls are the first teenagers in the White House since Chelsea Clinton.

Chelsea Clinton was 12 when her father President Bill Clinton took office in 1993.

In the interview the president also reacted to Michelle Obama’s recent remark that she was a “busy single mother”.

In her own interview with a local television news station, Michelle Obama quickly corrected herself.

Calling the first lady’s comment a slip of the tongue, Barack Obama added that at times – for instance when he was running for office – Michelle Obama was both working and looking after their daughters and may have felt like a single parent.

Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev planned to detonate remaining explosives in Times Square

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the Boston Marathon suspects Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev planned to detonate the rest of their explosives in Times Square.

Michael Bloomberg said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect, had told the FBI he and his brother Tamerlan “spontaneously” decided that New York would be next.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters the suspects had a pressure cooker bomb and five pipe bombs.

Three people died and over 260 were wounded in the April 15 Boston Marathon attack.

“Last night we were informed by the FBI that the surviving attacker revealed that New York City was next on their list of targets,” Michael Bloomberg said during Thursday’s news conference at city hall.

“He and his older brother intended to drive to New York and detonate those explosives in Times Square.”

Raymond Kelly said the brothers had planned to head to New York after hijacking a car and its driver in Boston last Thursday night.

“That plan, however, fell apart when they realized that the vehicle they hijacked was low on gas and ordered the driver to stop at a nearby gas station,” Raymond Kelly said, adding that the driver escaped and alerted police.

Police intercepted the brothers in the stolen car, prompting a gun battle that left 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev dead.

Michael Bloomberg praised Massachusetts law enforcement for their work in stopping the suspects, saying “we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks”.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is said to have travelled to New York at least once last autumn.

He is now in police custody in hospital and has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction to kill people.

Before reportedly telling investigators he and his brother planned an attack on Times Square, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had said they were planning to go to New York “to party” after the bombings.

Following 16 hours of interrogation, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev stopped responding to investigators’ questions after being read his legal rights to remain silent and have a lawyer, US media report.

Michael Bloomberg said there was no evidence New York was currently a target, but that the Tsarnaevs’ alleged plan proved the city remained a prime location for people who want to “bomb and kill Americans”.

On Thursday afternoon, police vehicles lined Times Square in a show of force, with officers standing shoulder to shoulder.

“Why are they standing like that? This is supposed to make me feel safer?” Elisabeth Bennecib, a tourist from France, told the Associated Press.

“It makes me feel more anxious, like something bad is about to happen.”

The suspects’ father, Anzor Tsarnaev, has said he will travel imminently to the US. The family wants to take Tamerlan’s body back to Russia. But it is not clear if his former wife will join him.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva left the US and failed to make a court appearance after being arrested last June on suspicion of stealing $1,624 of women’s dresses from a Massachusetts department store.

Paul Kevin Curtis: Ricin suspect released from jail as US authorities drops charges

0

Ricin suspect Paul Kevin Curtis has been released from jail as the US authorities have dropped the charges against the Mississippi man accused of sending letters poisoned with ricin to President Barack Obama and Senator Roger Wicker.

Paul Kevin Curtis was freed on Tuesday after prosecutors revealed the investigation had uncovered “new information”.

The letters addressed to Barack Obama and Republican Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker tested positive for the presence of the lethal toxin this month.

Meanwhile, investigators in the case are searching the home of another man.

Paul Kevin Curtis was arrested last week at his home in the town of Corinth, Mississippi and charged with sending letters to Barack Obama, Roger Wicker and a judge from Lee County.

But on Monday authorities searched Paul Kevin Curtis’ home and found neither ricin nor ingredients for the poison, an FBI agent testified in court. A search of his computer yielded no evidence he had researched how to make the toxin, the agent said.

In a news conference outside the courthouse on Tuesday, Paul Kevin Curtis thanked his family, friends, Jesus, Senator Roger Wicker and President Barack Obama.

Referring to investigators’ questions, he said: “I thought they said rice and I said, <<I don’t even eat rice>>.”

Paul Kevin Curtis, a musician and Elvis impersonator who also said he was a certified reflexologist, added: “I love my country and would never do anything to pose a threat to [Barack Obama] or any other US official.

“I would like to get back to normal, which for me means being the best father that I could be for my children and entertaining through my music.”

He was already well known to Senator roger Wicker because he had written to the Republican senator and other officials.

Paul Kevin Curtis’ lawyer Christi McCoy, whom Curtis described as a blonde, blue-eyed angel sent by God, told reporters she believed the FBI agents who had arrested and charged her client had “acted in good faith”.

Christi McCoy said she was unsure what new information prosecutors had but that the plot to frame her client was “very, very diabolical”.

According to an FBI affidavit released on Thursday, the letters read: “Maybe I have your attention now even if that means someone must die. To see a wrong and not expose it is to become a silent partner to its continuance.”

The letters were signed: “I am KC and I approve this message.”

As the case against Paul Kevin Curtis appeared to collapse on Monday and Tuesday, another man in nearby Tupelo, Mississippi, told the Associated Press authorities were searching his home in connection with the ricin letters.

Everett Dutschke said he was innocent, and the Associated Press reported agents from numerous law enforcement agencies had established a mobile crime lab near his home.

“I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” Everett Dutschke said.

No charges have been filed against him nor has he been arrested.

The search team also combed through an area of woods and ditches about a block from Everett Dutschke’s property.

Everett Dutschke said he and Paul Kevin Curtis had had a dispute, cutting off contact in 2010, after he threatened to sue Curtis for saying he was a member of Mensa, a group for people with high IQs.

“I’m a patriotic American,” Everett Dutschke, who unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Mississippi House of Representative in 2007, said.

“I don’t have any grudges against anybody. I did not send the letter.”

Ricin, extracted from castor beans, is 1,000 times more toxic than cyanide.

It can be fatal when inhaled, swallowed or injected, although it is possible to recover from exposure.

Justin Bieber: Drugs and stun gun found on his tour bus in Stockholm

Stockholm police have found drugs and a stun gun on board of a tour bus used by Justin Bieber.

Police spokesman Lars Bystrom said: “A small amount of drugs and a stun gun were found when officers raided the empty bus parked under the Globen concert venue in Stockholm.”

Lars Bystrom declined to identify the drug, saying it had been “sent to a laboratory for an analysis”.

No-one has been arrested.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva press conference: “America took my kids away from me”

0

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, the mother of the Boston marathon bombers, says she regrets that her family emigrated to the US, more than 10 years ago.

At a news conference in the Russian republic of Dagestan, where she now lives, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said America had taken her children away from her.

The Boston bombers’ mother also reiterated she was sure her sons were not involved in the attack.

It is being reported that Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was added to a terrorism database 18 months ago at the CIA’s request.

Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded when two devices exploded at the Boston marathon on 15 April.

“I would prefer not to have lived in America. Why did I go there?” Zubeidat Tsarnaeva said at Thursday’s news conference in Makhachkala, Dagestan.

“I thought America would protect us. America took my kids away from me… I’m sure my kids were not involved in anything.”

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed a few days after the bombing during a shootout with police.

His younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured and charged in connection with the attack.

The suspects’ father, Anzor Tsarnaev, has said he will travel to the US on Thursday or Friday. The family wants to take Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s body back to Russia.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, 45, has said she is still undecided whether to go, AP news agency reports, because she was charged with shoplifting in the US last year and fears arrest if she returns.

In questioning from his hospital bedside, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is being treated for gunshot wounds, he has reportedly said he and his brother Tamerlan were angry about the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2012, Tamerlan Tsarnaev spent six months with relatives in Dagestan, which has an Islamist militant insurgency.

But congressmen said on Wednesday after closed-door briefings that the brothers are not believed to have had direct contact with a militant organization.

Meanwhile, there are questions as to whether the authorities did enough to prevent the bombings.

US media report that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was added in 2011 to the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (TIDE), at the request of the CIA.

The database contains as many as 745,000 entries; individuals on that list are not necessarily on the so-called terrorist watch list.

The FBI investigated after Russian authorities alerted US counterparts to the activities of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, saying he had become a follower of radical Islam.

About six months before the CIA requested his name be added to TIDE, the FBI asked the Russians for more information about the elder brother but received none, and closed its investigation.

US officials said earlier that their intelligence community had no information about threats to the marathon ahead of last week’s attacks.

After a classified briefing at the House intelligence committee on Wednesday, Democratic Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger said he believed the FBI was not at fault.

Gwyneth Paltrow in entirely sheer side panels dress and no underwear at Iron Man 3 premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow arrived on the red carpet at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California, for the Marvel’s Iron Man 3 premiere, in a gown which looked demure from a distance.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Antonio Berardi dress featured mesh panels down the sides, showing off her hips and décolletage area.

The material would have made it almost impossible for her to wear underwear beneath the number.

While she could have quite possibly been wearing a strapless bra, briefs would have been too tricky.

The look of her item of clothing – which created the optical illusion of a curvy white silhouette down the middle – also drew attention to her tiny waist.

With a dark green peplum section that matched her kimono style arm cuffs, 40-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow- who plays Pepper Potts – looked in great shape.

She is known for taking up often strict healthy eating plans – such as eating only macrobiotic meals at one point – in an effort to stay trim.

Gwyneth Paltrow allowed her skin to glow in natural make-up and wore her blonde locks straight and to one side over her shoulder.

She added a fun twist to her appearance with purple nail polish and paired a large drop earring with a contrasting small stud that evening.

Hyundai Motor reports 15% drop in its profits for Q1 2013

Hyundai Motor has reported a 15% drop in its profits for the first quarter of 2013, after being hit by industrial action and the strength of the won.

The South Korean company’s net profit in the first three month came in at 2.1 trillion Korean won ($1.9 billion) compared with 2.5 trillion in the same period a year ago.

Since January, the Korean won has appreciated by 4.5% against the US dollar.

Industrial action has also hurt Hyundai’s ability to increase capacity.

Hyundai Motor has reported a 15 percent drop in its profits for Q1 2013, after being hit by industrial action and the strength of the won

Analysts said Hyundai had been hurt by the unfavorable exchange rate environment.

The strong won has made Hyundai’s vehicles less price competitive when compared to their Japanese rivals. The yen has depreciated by more than 10% since January giving a boost to Japanese car makers.

In addition, frequent work stoppages by Hyundai’s unionized workers also affected the carmaker’s earnings.

Hyundai’s labor union again refused to work last weekend – the seventh straight weekend of industrial action.

The latest stoppage resulted in production losses of about 50,000 vehicles which would cost the company nearly 1tn Korean won.

The quarterly earnings statement also revealed weak demand in the eurozone market, which led to an 11% drop in annual sales in Q1 2013.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains silent after he was read Miranda rights

0

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev admitted his role in the Boston Marathon attacks to the FBI before he was told of his constitutional right to keep quiet and seek a lawyer.

It has been revealed that once Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was read his rights, he immediately stopped talking.

The FBI normally tells suspects they have the right to remain silent before questioning them so all their statements can be used against them in court.

But two anonymous US officials said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been questioned by police for 16 hours before he was read his rights.

It is unclear as to whether this will matter in court as the FBI says Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has already confessed to a witness.

A spokeswoman for US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said: “Before being advised of his rights, the 19-year-old suspect told authorities that his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, only recently had recruited him to be part of the attack.”

The debate over whether suspected terrorists should be read their Miranda rights has become a sticking point.

Many Republicans believe they hinder intelligence gathering.

The Department of Justice has said investigators may wait until they have gathered intelligence about other threats before reading those rights in terrorism cases.

Investigators have found pieces of remote-control equipment among the debris and are analyzing them, officials said.

One official described the detonator as “close-controlled”, meaning it had to be triggered within several blocks of the bombs.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is recovering in a hospital from injuries suffered during a getaway attempt last Friday.

Gwyneth Paltrow named People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman 2013

Gwyneth Paltrow was named the world’s most beautiful woman by People magazine, which praised her “timeless look”.

However, Gwyneth Paltrow, 40, received a barrage of abuse on Twitter after being crowned People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman 2013.

Gwyneth paltrow beat actresses Jennifer Lawrence, 22, and Amanda Seyfried, 27, to the top spot, and snatched the title from her best friend Beyonce, 31, who won last year.

But within hours of the award being announced, critics took to Twitter to attack the decision.

One remarked: “If Gwyneth Paltrow is the most beautiful woman in the world then I’m a ten times Olympic bobsled gold medalist and Top Gun fighter pilot.”

Another wrote: “So People magazine has declared Gwyneth Paltrow is the world’s most beautiful woman, I wonder how they decide this. Bunch of c**p.”

“Gwyneth Paltrow’s publicist has not only earned his or her holiday bonus this year already but yours and mine as well,” added a third.

The comments come just a week after Gwyneth Paltrow was voted one of the most hated celebrities in Hollywood in a poll by Star magazine.

The actress was accused of being arrogant and giving patronizing advice on everything from cookery to how to dress.

Clean-living Gwyneth Paltrow, who is married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, follows a rigorous diet and exercise regime to keep herself in shape.

But despite always appearing immaculate at red carpet events, she insists she spends most of her time lounging around in “baggy shorts” with “frizzy hair”.

Gwyneth Paltrow said: “Around the house, I’m in jeans and a t-shirt. I don’t really wear make-up. That’s what [my family] are used to.

“And Chris will make a joke about it. If I’ve gotten fully dressed up, he’ll be like, <<Oh, wow! You’re Gwyneth Paltrow!>> Because he’s used to seeing me in baggy shorts and frizzy hair.”

Describing her intensive fitness regime, which involves training five times a week with celebrity instructor Tracy Anderson, Gwyneth Paltrow added: “It makes me look younger and feel strong. It’s like brushing my teeth, I just do it.”

Kim Kardashian bra size goes up to F as she is concerned about her baby weight gain

According to reports, Kim Kardashian’s bra size has gone up to F, and the reality star is said to be concerned that she won’t be able to lose the baby weight she has gained once her first child is born.

“Kim’s panicking that the weight will just keep on stacking on and will never come off,” a source close to Kim Kardashian told InTouch magazine.

“Not only is she vain, but she knows that her body is what makes her money. She’s built an empire on it. But as much as she tries to be good, she just can’t stop eating.

“It’s like something has taken over her body, and she’s miserable.

Kim Kardashian’s bra size has gone up to F while she is concerned that she won’t be able to lose the baby weight

“(She’s) freaking out about her body.

“She’s always played up her sex appeal, so she’s terrified she won’t be able to get her body back after the baby is born.

“She’s completely neurotic about her looks. She recently gained six pounds in one week. She said, <<Even my armpits are fat, I don’t know what’s happening to me>>. She’s got to do something, because her body is everything to her.”

However, speaking to reporters at the E! Upfronts event on Monday, Kim Kardashian said she had gotten more used to pregnancy, is more comfortable in her skin and is no longer feeling the aches and pains of expectant motherhood.

“Now I think I’m past all the awkward phases and stages, and once you feel the baby kick it’s a whole new experience,” Kim Kardashian said.

“I finally really embrace it. I love it now, but it took a minute. It was a lot, you know, a lot of body changes and stuff.”

Kim Kardashian, 32, has received a lot of scrutiny over how she’s chosen to dress her baby bump.

For a while she avoided maternity clothes, wearing see-through tops and leather pants.

Kim Kardashian also opted to still wear designer clothing but in larger sizes that maybe weren’t meant for an expectant woman.

She said that she’s not only feeling better, but is pretty calm about giving birth and isn’t nervous.

“At the beginning that was what I feared the most, and now, I mean, it’s inevitable,” Kim Kardashian said.

“It’s gonna happen. I’m really not worried or nervous.”

Kim Kardashian and her baby’s father, Kanye West, know the gender of their child but are keeping it a secret.

She said she’s careful when she goes shopping to not give anything away.

“We buy all white,” Kim Kardashian said, laughing.

“Or we’ll go and buy both [girls’ and boys’ clothing], and then no one will know.”

Kim Kardashian in black Lanvin mini dress after suffering disaster in pink

After being slated when she stepped out in a pink voluminous Lanvin mini dress that failed to flatter her pregnancy figure last month, Kim Kardashian somewhat redeemed herself when she stepped out in a very similar style in New York on Wednesday.

Kim Kardashian, 32, wore an almost identical black knit frock, which this time had short capped sleeves.

The darker shade also appeared to make her large baby bump disappear, despite the material sitting tight across her waistline.

Kim Kardashian teamed her dress with a pair of lace cut-out ankle booties and a large black crocodile skin clutch.

CIA tracked Tamerlan Tsarnaev 18 months before Boston attack and added him to terrorism database

Boston bomb suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was added to a terrorism database 18 months ago at the request of the CIA, officials have told US media.

The FBI has already said it investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, but had found no evidence of a threat.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during a police chase last week. His brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, is in custody over the bombs.

Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded when two devices exploded at the Boston Marathon on April 15.

A US politician earlier confirmed the bombs were set off by remote control.

But the devices were not sophisticated and apparently had to be triggered from a few streets away.

Officials said Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been added to the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (TIDE) on the request of the CIA.

The database contains as many as 745,000 entries, and individuals on that list are not necessarily on the so-called terrorist watch list.

The Russian authorities had alerted US counterparts to the activities of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose family has its origins in the war-torn Russian republic of Chechnya.

About six months before the CIA requested his name be added to TIDE, the FBI asked the Russians for more information about Tamerlan Tsarnaev but received none, and closed its investigation.

The authorities earlier said the US intelligence community had no information about threats to the Boston Marathon ahead of the April 15 attacks.

After a classified briefing in the House intelligence committee on Wednesday, Democratic Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger said he believed the FBI was not at fault.

“I feel, based on the testimony today, that the FBI did exactly what they would do and they followed through the protocols that were necessary once they got that information,” Dutch Ruppersberger told reporters.

He also said he had been told the bombs were detonated with a “garage door opener-type of device”.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was injured during the police manhunt and remains in hospital in a fair condition.

Officers captured him as he hid in a boat covered by a tarpaulin in a garden in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Officials initially had said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev exchanged gunfire with police for more than an hour before he was captured on Friday.

But the Associated Press quoted two unnamed officials as saying Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been unarmed when he was captured.

The younger brother has been charged in hospital with using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could be sentenced to death if convicted on either count.

In bedside questioning, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has said he and his brother were angry about the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But the brothers are not believed to have had direct contact with a militant organization, politicians said after closed-door briefings.

It is suspected the brothers became radicalized online.

The suspects’ parents, Anzor Tsarnaev and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, are due to arrive in the US on Thursday, Russian media reported.

The Tsarnaev family has origins in the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya in southern Russia.

Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been living in the US for about a decade at the time of the Boston Marathon attack.

In 2012, Tamerlan Tsarnaev spent six months with relatives in Dagestan, another Russian republic, which has an Islamist militant insurgency.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside David Henneberry’s boat

0

Two unnamed US officials have revealed to the Associated Press that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside David Henneberry’s boat in Watertown.

The report contradicts the Boston police department’s own account of Dzhokar Tsarnaev’s capture on Friday – after commissioner Edward F. Davis described a firefight between him and officers before the terror suspect was captured.

The New York Times also said an M4 rifle had been found on the boat – another claim contradicted by the latest revelations.

Officers had originally said they had exchanged gunfire with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for more than one hour Friday evening before they were able to subdue him.

But on Wednesday, the law enforcement officials told the AP that no gun was found aboard the vessel.

It also contradicts many media accounts of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s final moments of freedom.

The New York Times reported that an M-4 carbine rifle – similar to the weapon used by American troops fighting in Afghanistan – was found aboard the boat and that officials had recovered two handguns and a bb gun used by the two brothers.

The throat wound sustained by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was also said by numerous law enforcement sources to be self inflicted.

Sources told Newsday that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s bullet wound looked to be self-inflicted, due to the location of the wound and the trajectory of the bullet.

Reuters reported that the Boston bomber was shot through the mouth by a round that exited through his neck.

Dozens of bullet holes were seen on the exterior of David Henneberry’s boat in photos taken shortly after the final standoff in the Watertown backyard.

The officials told the AP that say investigators only recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s brother, Tamerlan, from the site of a gun battle Thursday night, which injured a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was believed to have been shot before he escaped.

Meanwhile the suspect told the FBI that they were angry about the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the killing of Muslims there, officials said.

How much of those conversations will end up in court is unclear.

The FBI normally tells suspects they have the right to remain silent before questioning them so all their statements can be used against them.

Under pressure from Congress, however, the Department of Justice has said investigators may wait until they have gathered intelligence about other threats before reading those rights in terrorism cases.

The American Civil Liberties Union has expressed concern about that.

Regardless, investigators have found pieces of remote-control equipment among the debris and were analyzing them, officials said.

Henrique Capriles gives ultimatum over Venezuela’s presidential polls audit

Henrique Capriles, the opposition candidate for Venezuela’s presidency, has threatened to take action over disputed votes he claims were “stolen” by Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Henrique Capriles Radonski demanded details of an audit of the vote the electoral council says it will carry out.

He said the council had a “deadline” of Thursday, but did not specify what action he would take.

Nicolas Maduro won the April 14 election by less than two percentage points.

He was sworn in as president last week, succeeding his mentor Hugo Chavez, who died in March of cancer.

Henrique Capriles has threatened to take action over disputed votes he claims were "stolen" by Nicolas Maduro's government
Henrique Capriles has threatened to take action over disputed votes he claims were “stolen” by Nicolas Maduro’s government

But the opposition cried foul, and tensions in the divided country have reached fever pitch, with the government accusing the opposition of fomenting coup attempts and the opposition accusing the government of “desperate lies”.

Nine people died in post-election protests and both the government and opposition are planning more protests on 1st of May.

Henrique Capriles says the vote was marred by thousands of irregularities, including voter intimidation, and has demanded a full recount.

The national electoral council (CNE) offered an electronic audit of the vote last week, to begin this week, but says Nicolas Maduro’s victory remains “irreversible”.

It has so far failed to give any details of the audit and on Wednesday Henrique Capriles said he would wait only until Thursday.

“We will not accept a joke audit,” Henrique Capriles said at a news conference.

“It’s time to get serious.”

Henrique Capriles repeated his accusations that Nicolas Maduro had manipulated poll results, telling a news conference: “The truth – and it is as big as our country is wide – is that you stole the election. That is the truth.

“You stole this electoral process, and you have to explain that to this country and to the world.”

The government, meanwhile, accuses the opposition of stirring up the post-election violence in a bid to engender a coup, and the government-controlled National Assembly has now announced a commission to investigate whether Henrique Capriles was responsible.

Pedro Carreno, who will head the commission, dubbed Henrique Capriles a “murderer” as he announced its formation – joining the National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello, who has called him a “fascist murderer”.

Prisons Minister Iris Varela, meanwhile, has said a jail cell awaits Henrique Capriles.

Media coverage of the post-election violence has been at odds, with state media describing pro-opposition mobs torching health clinics but opposition media saying many reports of the violence were fabricated.

South Korea’s economy growth rate hits two-year high in Q1 2013

South Korea’s economy growth rate hit a two-year high in the first quarter of 2013, boosted by a rebound in construction, investment and exports.

The economy grew by 0.9% in the January to March quarter from the Q4 2012, the central bank’s estimates showed.

The data is likely to help allay fears over the health of the Korean economy.

Earlier this year, the government cut its growth forecast for the current year amid a slowdown in exports.

However, the latest data showed a 3.2% quarter-on-quarter growth in exports during the period.

South Korea's economy growth rate hit a two-year high in the first quarter of 2013, boosted by a rebound in construction, investment and exports
South Korea’s economy growth rate hit a two-year high in the first quarter of 2013, boosted by a rebound in construction, investment and exports

That compares with a 1.2% drop in the previous quarter.

South Korea’s exports, which account for almost half of its overall output, have been hit by slowing demand in key markets such as the US and the eurozone.

Demand in the eurozone has been hurt by the bloc’s ongoing sovereign debt crisis, while the US economic recovery has also been fragile.

Some analysts warned that despite the positive data, exports continue to be fragile as conditions in those markets have not improved substantially.

“I think it’s hard to say that the economy is turning around as export growth completely halted,” said Jun Min-Kyoo, an economist at Korea Investment and Securities.

“Companies are still panicking about poor exports.”

There have also been fears over the impact movements in the currency markets may have on Korean exports.

The South Korean won has risen by nearly 10% against the US dollar since May, making its exports more expensive to foreign buyers.

Meanwhile, there has been a sharp decline in the Japanese yen, which has dipped almost 20% against the US dollar since November 2012, triggered by an aggressive monetary policy stance by the new Japanese government.

There have been fears that because Japan and South Korea compete in similar markets, Korean goods may lose out as a result of the currency moves and that such developments may also hurt South Korea’s overall growth.

However, analysts said the latest data indicated that the moves had not had a significant effect on the sector.

“Exports improved even though the yen was depreciating, suggesting that there hasn’t been any major impact on growth yet,” said Kong Dong-Pak, an analyst at Hanwha Securities.

As a result, policymakers have been taking measures to boost domestic consumption in an attempt to offset the decline in foreign sales and sustain growth.

Last week, the government unveiled a 17.3 trillion won ($15.3 billion) stimulus plan.

It said the funds would be used to help small and medium-sized exporters, create jobs, boost a stagnant property market and cover a shortfall in tax revenue.

The move is expected to help boost annual growth by 0.3 percentage point this year and create 40,000 jobs.

Analysts said that as the plan is implemented and starts to impact real growth, policymakers may revise their projections upwards.

“Once the government’s extra budget starts kicking in, it’s possible that the Bank of Korea could raise its 2013 growth forecast come July,” said Kong Dong-Pak of Hanwha Securities.

Mexican teachers incensed by sweeping education reforms have attacked the buildings of political parties in the south-western state of Guerrero.

For several hours, masked protesters started fires and attacked the offices with pickaxes and sticks, spraying slogans on the walls.

Guerrer governor has called for support from the federal government.

The reforms impose centralized teacher assessment and seek to end corrupt practices in the education system.

Those practices include the buying and selling of teaching positions.

But unions say the reforms could lead to big lay-offs, and critics also suggest they may be paving the way for the privatization of Mexico’s education system.

Wednesday’s protests came a day after the Guerrero state legislature refused to amend the educational bill, which includes constitutional changes which must be passed by each state.

Police stood by during Wednesday’s rampage in the state capital, Chilpancingo – though hundreds are guarding the state legislature.

Dozens of protesters targeted the local headquarters of the governing party, the PRI, as well as the offices of the opposition PAN and PRD, which have supported the reforms.

A senator’s office and state education department building were also attacked by the demonstrators, who broke windows and tossed computer equipment, desks and chairs out of the windows.

They burned papers inside the offices, some of which still had frightened workers inside when the masked men broke in, and sprayed slogans including “traitors of the people” on the walls.

The teachers are part of the country’s smaller, more radical union, the National Co-ordinator of Education Workers.

Union spokesman Minervo Moran said the violent protests were “a reaction to the aggressive policies that are being imposed by the reforms and that’s why there was this sort of action against the parties” that voted against the protesters’ proposals.

Guerrero Governor Angel Aguirre called for federal back-up and the PRI chairman Cesar Camacho pledged to investigate the unrest.

“We need to avoid the law of the jungle imposing itself, chaos and the breakdown of public order,” Cesar Camacho was quoted as saying.

Recently formed civilian self-defence groups are thought to have joined the demonstrators wreaking havoc on Wednesday.

Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto signed the education law in February, but parliamentarians need to draw up separate legislation to implement it.
