In response to his daughter’s revelation, Robert De Niro, 81, issued a simple yet powerful statement: “I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is. I love all my children.”  

Airyn’s interview with Them touched on her feelings of being a “late bloomer” in understanding her gender identity and the challenges of navigating societal expectations around race and gender. She also highlighted the inspiration she found in seeing other trans women, particularly Black trans women, living openly and authentically. Airyn began hormone replacement therapy last November.  

“I think a big part of [my transition] is also the influence Black women have had on me,” Airyn told Them. “I think stepping into this new identity, while also being more proud of my Blackness, makes me feel closer to them in some way.”

What are Ultra-Processed Foods?

Ultra-processed foods, as defined by the NOVA food classification system, undergo multiple industrial processes and often contain numerous added ingredients not typically used in home cooking. These include preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial colors and flavors, sweeteners, and other additives. Examples of UPFs abound in modern diets, ranging from processed meats and sugary drinks to mass-produced bread, ready meals, and packaged snacks like crisps and biscuits.

The Stark Findings

The study’s findings paint a worrying picture. In the UK, where UPFs constitute a staggering 53% of the average person’s energy intake (second only to the US at 55%), researchers estimated that in 2018-19, a staggering 17,781 premature deaths could be attributed to the consumption of these foods. This translates to 14% of all premature deaths in the UK during that period, a figure significantly higher than the 4% observed in Colombia, where UPF consumption is considerably lower.  

Lead researcher Eduardo Nilson emphasized the dose-response relationship identified in the study: “Each 10% increase in the participation of UPFs in the diet increases the risk of death from all causes by 3%.” This suggests a direct and quantifiable link between higher UPF consumption and a greater likelihood of dying prematurely.  

Why the Concern?

Experts highlight that UPFs are often high in saturated fat, salt, sugar, and calories while being low in essential nutrients like fiber and vitamins. This nutrient-poor profile can displace more nutritious whole foods in the diet, contributing to various health problems.  

Previous research has already linked high UPF intake to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes – all conditions that can significantly shorten lifespan. However, the precise mechanisms by which UPFs contribute to these adverse health outcomes and premature death are still under investigation. Some theories involve the impact of artificial additives on the gut microbiome and inflammation, as well as the altered texture and rapid absorption of these foods, potentially disrupting appetite regulation.  

Expert Reaction and Policy Implications

While some experts caution that correlation does not equal causation and that further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms, the accumulating evidence is prompting calls for public health interventions.

Nerys Astbury, an associate professor from the University of Oxford, acknowledged the limitations of observational studies but noted the consistency of findings across multiple countries, strengthening the plausibility of a link.

The three children, aged two, four, and seven, were reportedly deported with their Honduran-born mothers following routine check-ins with ICE in Louisiana. Lawyers representing the families allege that the mothers were effectively coerced into taking their US citizen children with them and were prevented from communicating with legal counsel or other family members in the crucial hours before their removal.  

The most alarming detail involves the four-year-old boy, who is reportedly undergoing active treatment for a rare and aggressive form of stage four cancer. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the child was deported without his necessary medication and without any consultation with his treating physicians in the United States. This has raised grave concerns about his immediate health and access to ongoing medical care in Honduras.

In the case of the two-year-old girl, identified in court documents as V.M.L., a federal judge in Louisiana issued a scathing order expressing “strong suspicion that the Government just deported a U.S. citizen with no meaningful process.” Judge Terry Doughty, a Trump appointee, revealed that he had attempted to arrange a call with the child’s mother prior to deportation but was informed it was no longer possible as she had been released in Honduras.  

Lawyers for the father of the two-year-old had filed for an emergency transfer of custody to the child’s US citizen aunt in a bid to prevent the deportation. Judge Doughty has scheduled an emergency hearing for May 16th to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s removal.  

The ACLU and other legal groups have condemned ICE’s actions as a “shocking and increasingly common abuse of power,” highlighting the agency’s alleged disregard for due process and the best interests of US citizen children. They argue that the mothers were given no real choice but to take their children with them, despite the availability of US citizen caregivers in the United States.  

“These mothers were deprived of communication and any real alternatives by ICE,” stated Gracie Willis of the National Immigration Project. “They didn’t give them a choice; these mothers only had the option to take their children with them despite loving caregivers being available in the United States to keep them here.”  

ICE has yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations, but President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, in a media appearance, stated that the children were not “deported” but rather accompanied their mothers who had been ordered deported. He argued that the mothers made the decision to take their children with them.

However, legal advocates vehemently dispute this characterization, asserting that the mothers were pressured and denied the opportunity to make informed decisions about their children’s welfare. They point to the rushed nature of the deportations, often occurring within hours of detention and with limited or no access to legal counsel.
