Katt Williams arrested in Seattle after threatening a bar employee with a pool cue

Katt Williams has been arrested after allegedly threatened a bar employee with a pool cue in a brawl.

The comic was booked into King County Jail in Seattle around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday for investigation of harassment, assault and obstructing police, TMZ reports. He was released early Monday morning.

Katt Williams “brandished a pool cue at a bar manager and refused to leave the business”, police sources tell the website.

He later followed a family outside of the bar and allegedly threw a cigarette at a woman as she got into her car, hitting her in the eye.

Katt Williams also allegedly threw a rock at the vehicle.

It follows a series of bizarre antics by Katt Williams in recent weeks.

Last week was caught on video in Sacramento slapping a Target employee in the face.

Katt Williams was arrested on charges of attacking an aspiring rapper on his tour bus outside a downtown Oakland hotel last month. He was later released with no charges filed.

He is also being sued over an onstage meltdown and aborted performance in Oakland.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports it’s the second Alameda County lawsuit filed over Williams’ bizarre 10 minutes on stage last month at Oakland’s Oracle Arena.

The suit filed by 35-year-old Brian Herline, of Modesto, says he and hundreds of fans were disappointed when Katt Williams took off his clothes and challenged people to fight.

Brian Herline is seeking class-action certification in an effort to get ticket money back for all audience members.

Mike Tyson reveals how he found Brad Pitt in bed with his wife Robin Givens

Former boxer Mike Tyson has revealed how he found his wife Robin Givens in bed with Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt – and how he “was mad as hell” at the discovery.

Mike Tyson, 46, said although he was divorcing actress Robin Givens he used to go round her home daily for sex before visiting his lawyer and denouncing her “as a pig” who stole his money.

Mike Tyson described as a “love triangle with Pitt” the Hangover star told show In Depth With Graham Bensinger he was “mad as hell”, before adding: “You should have saw his face when he saw me.”

Robin Givens and Mike Tyson had a famously short-lived marriage in the 1980s that was marked by violence.

When the pair married in 1988 Mike Tyson was estimated to be worth $50 million.

Robin Givens filed for divorce three months later alleging spousal abuse and was reported to have received a divorce settlement of over $10 million.

A Harvard graduate, many believed Robin Givens had set out to take Mike Tyson’s money. She had previously dated Eddie Murphy and Brad Pitt.

The former boxer told Graham Bensinger: “I was doing a divorce but every day, before I would go to my lawyer’s office to say, <<She’s a pig and stealing>>, I would go to her house to have sex with her.”

Mike Tyson, who admitted in 2010 he agreed to play a caricature of himself in The Hangover to fund his drug habit, recently revealed that he was high on cocaine while shooting the cameo in the hit film, which became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy in the United States.

The heavyweight champion, who was a fan of director Todd Phillips’ Old School, told Yahoo! Sports: “I was a mess. I was overweight. I was a pig, high on cocaine.”

Speaking on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Mike Tyson reiterated he only signed on to the project to “supply his drug habit”, according to producers.

In the 2009 movie, the notorious boxer threatens to harm the Wolfpack unless they return his stolen tiger, but in real life the cast inspired him to change his lifestyle.

“They had to know I was messed up. I couldn’t talk. I had the cocaine talk,” Mike Tyson said of Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha.

“So those guys are just beautiful people. They had my back, and I appreciate that and stuff, then they asked me to come back [in The Hangover 2].”

Back in 2007, the boxer was convicted of possession of cocaine and a DUI and the year prior, Mike Tyson checked into rehab after a similar arrest.

Mike Tyson, who’s now happily married to third wife Lakiha Spencer, then stumbled upon the Head of the Class star returning home with Brad Pitt.

“I was mad as hell. I was going to…you should have saw his face when he saw me,” Mike Tyson told the interviewer.

The former boxer has since moved on from the scandal.

He took to his Twitter account on Saturday to remind fans about his one-man show, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, will soon hit the road for a 10-week, 36-city national tour.

“My #OneManShow is hitting the road on a NATIONAL TOUR starting February 2013,” Mike Tyson wrote to his 2.9 million followers.

The two-hour, tell-all show was directed by Spike Lee and originally ran for 11 days in August on Broadway at the Longacre Theater.

It tackles his marriages, divorces, eight children, rape conviction, anger issues, and the piece of ear he bit off of Evander Holyfield.

Mike Tyson will not, however, reprise his outlandish character a third time in the final installment of the booze-soaked franchise The Hangover.

The Hangover Part III, due in theaters on May 24, 2013, is rumored to focus on Phil and Stu (Cooper and Helms) breaking Alan (Galifianakis) out of a mental institution.

But the boxer told TMZthis week: “I have no idea what’s going on, I’m not in this one.”

Jovan Belcher was part of Male Athletes Against Violence and had pledged against attacking females

0

Kansas City Chief Jovan Belcher was a member of a group which campaigns against violence towards women.

Jovan Belcher – who was raised by his own mother – was part of Male Athletes Against Violence and had pledged to develop deep-held beliefs against attacking females.

Among the promises he would have made is one to “look honestly at my actions in regard to violence and make changes if necessary”.

Jovan Belcher, 25, would also have taken part in the White Ribbon campaign – those taking part vow to “never to commit, condone nor remain silent about violence against women”.

The linebacker was a member of MAAV whilst studying at the University of Maine where he played football for three years until he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.

On Saturday his past as an anti-violence campaigner apparently meant little when he shot Kasandra Perkins dead in a row when she came home from an R&B concert the night before.

His mother discovered the body as she was living in the house too and called 911.

Jovan Belcher then drove to his team’s stadium and shot himself dead in front of his coach and general manager.

He and Kasandra Perkins lived together and three months ago had a baby girl but are said to have rowed frequently.

The horrific murder suicide came one day before a Kansas home game against the Carolina Panthers which went ahead as scheduled.

Just a day after the deaths, the Chiefs would take the field against the Carolina Panthers eventually winning their second game of the season 27-21.

As friends and family try to work out what drove Jovan Belcher over the edge, it now seems that in recent years he was a champion of women’s rights.

Whilst at UMaine he was part of MAAV which describes itself as an “effort to involve men so that we can begin to understand that violence is very much a man’s issue”.

It supports the White Ribbon campaign in which male athletes wear a white ribbon as a public display of their stand against violent men.

Among the promotional posters are some with football players which have slogans like: “Join the huddle. Work together to end violence” and “Stand tough against violence”.

Jovan Belcher himself has even spoken about his respect for women which he developed because his father was never around.

In a 2008 interview he said: “My mother is a hardworking woman.

“To see her overcome some things and succeed, it makes me look at things and say, <<this isn’t even hard>>.

“I didn’t really have a father figure, so they provided nice guidance for me.”

Judging from pictures posted on Kasandra Perkins’ Facebook page, Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend had appeared to be happy and in love following the birth of their first child.

Jovan Belcher had argued with his girlfriend after she came home late from an R&B concert the night before he shot her dead then drove to his team’s stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, it has emerged.

The 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs linebacker fatally shot 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins early on Saturday morning, then killed himself in the presence of Chiefs staff after first thanking them for everything they had done for him, police said.

The couple lived together and three months ago had a baby together on September 11 – but a friend said they quarreled frequently, and added that they fought when Kasandra Perkins arrived home at 1 a.m. after attending a performance by Trey Songz.

Authorities did not confirm a possible motive for the murder-suicide, which stunned the team and came one day before a home game against the Carolina Panthers. The NFL said the game would go on as scheduled.

SMS texting at its 20th anniversary

Communications Market Report 2012 has found that texting is now the most popular way to stay in contact.

Its study found that 90% of 16 to 24-year-olds text daily to communicate with friends and family, compared to only 63% who talk face-to-face.

The Communications Market Report 2012 said that talking on the phone was also less popular than texting among this younger age group, with only 67% saying they make daily phone calls.

The findings come as the SMS celebrates its 20th birthday today.

The first ever SMS was sent on December 3rd, 1992, when Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old British engineer used his computer to send the message “Merry Christmas” to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone.

But the origins of the idea date back further to Matti Makkonen. Over a pizza at a telecoms conference in 1984, the former Finnish civil servant put forward the idea of a mobile phone messaging service. This was to become the SMS (short message service) standard.

According to research by Ofcom, the media regulator, the average UK consumer now sends around 50 text messages every week.

In 2011, more than 150 billion text messages were sent in the UK, which was almost triple the amount sent five years previously in 2006 – when 51 billion texts were sent, according to an Ofcom report.

It also found that texting was now most prolific among 12-15 year olds, who send an average of 193 texts every week, almost four times the UK average. This has more than doubled from 12 months ago, when just 91 were sent each week by the same age group.

The first ever SMS was sent on December 3rd, 1992
The first ever SMS was sent on December 3rd, 1992

Girls aged between 12 and 15 are texting significantly more than boys, sending an average of 221 messages a week – 35 per cent more than boys of the same age, who send 164 a week.

The average 8-11-year-old sends 41 texts each week, almost double the number (23) sent in 2011

The first half of 2012 saw two quarterly declines in the volume of SMS messages sent in the UK (Q1 2012: 39.1 billion; Q2 2012: 38.5 billion), falling slightly from their peak of 39.7 billion in Q4 in 2011.

This decline could be attributed to people using alternative forms of text-based communications, such as instant messaging and social networking sites.

The recent increase in ownership of internet-connected devices, such as tablets and smartphones, could also be behind this trend. Four in 10 (39%) adults now own a smartphone, making it easier to gain access to web-based communications.

James Thickett, Ofcom’s director of research, said: “When texting was first conceived many saw it as nothing more than a niche service.

“But texts have now surpassed traditional phone calls and meeting face to face as the most frequent way of keeping in touch for UK adults, revolutionizing the way we socialize, work and network.

“For the first time in the history of mobile phones, SMS volumes are showing signs of decline. However the availability of a wider range of communications tools like instant messaging and social networking sites, mean that people might be sending fewer SMS messages, but they are <<texting>> more than ever before.”

Pope Benedict’s Twitter account @pontifex unveiled by Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI is to begin sending Twitter messages using the handle @pontifex as his personal account, the Vatican has announced.

A spokesman said Pope Benedict XVI wanted to “reach out to everyone” with tweets translated into eight languages.

The first tweet from his account, whose name means both pontiff and builder of bridges, is expected on December 12th.

Last year, Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet last year from a Vatican account to launch the Holy See’s news information portal.

“We are going to get a spiritual message. The Pope is not going to be walking around with a Blackberry or an iPad and no-one is going to be putting words into the Pope’s mouth,” Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican said.

“He will tweet what he wants to tweet,” he added, though the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion or so Roman Catholics is expected to sign off, rather than write, each individual tweet himself.

The Vatican said the Pope will be using a question-and-answer format for his first Twitter session, focusing on answering questions about faith in 140 characters.

The Vatican has invited people to start sending in questions ahead of time for the Pope to answer.

The tweets are expected to highlight messages from his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on key Church holidays as well as papal reaction to world events.

The Vatican has long shown interest in using the latest communications technologies to spread the faith with the inventor of radio, Guglielmo Marconi, setting up Vatican Radio in 1931.

The Catholic Church also already uses several social media platforms, including text messages and YouTube, to communicate with young people.

The Vatican’s own Twitter account has almost 110,000 followers, though it follows no-one.

Papal aides say the pontiff himself still prefers to communicate in longhand rather than using a computer keyboard.

Pope Benedict’s six-year papacy has been bedeviled by poor communications.

Embarrassing clarifications had to be issued over such thorny issues as his 2005 speech about Islam and violence, and his stance on condoms and HIV.

Egypt’s Judges’ Club boycotts Mohammed Morsi’s referendum on country’s new constitution

Egypt’s Judges’ Club has refused to oversee a referendum on the country’s new draft constitution, to be held in two weeks.

The Judges’ Club’s decision follows a confrontation between Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court and Islamist supporters of President Mohammed Morsi.

The court said it was suspending its work after its members were prevented from ruling on the legitimacy of the body that drew up the constitution.

Opposition groups called for protests against the referendum on Tuesday.

They said Mohammed Morsi had broken a promise not to call a referendum without gaining a wide national consensus.

“The National Salvation Front condemns the irresponsible act by the president of the republic in calling a referendum on an illegitimate constitution that is rejected by a large section of his people,” an alliance of opposition groups said in a statement.

The opposition believes that the draft constitution undermines basic freedoms.

The latest developments heighten the tensions between President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood supporters on one side, and his mainly secular political opponents and the judiciary on the other.

Hours after the Supreme Constitutional Court suspended its work, the Judges’ Club, the union which represents the profession nationwide, said it had turned down the judges’ traditional role of electoral oversight for the referendum.

“We have decided to boycott the supervision of the referendum on the constitution scheduled for December 15, 2012,” the club’s head Ahmed al-Zind announced.

“This protest is in response to what is being called the ‘constitutional decree’ and until this decree is rescinded.”

Correspondents say the club’s decisions are not binding on members, and Vice-President Mahmoud Mekky said he was confident judges would do their job.

The Supreme Constitutional Court had earlier described Sunday as “the blackest day in the history of Egyptian judiciary” after its judges were prevented from attending a meeting by Islamist protesters.

The court had been scheduled to rule on whether to dissolve both the constituent assembly that passed the draft constitution and the Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament, the Shura Council.

Supporters of President Mohammed Morsi wanted to block any ruling that would question the document’s legality.

Mohammed Morsi adopted sweeping new powers in a decree on November 22nd that stripped the judiciary of any power to challenge his decisions, so it is unclear what effect any Supreme Constitutional Court ruling would have had.

However, analysts say any ruling opposing his decisions would be a direct challenge and would bolster the opposition campaign to have his decree annulled.

The president’s supporters are wary of the court, as it dissolved an Islamist-dominated lower house of parliament in an earlier confrontation in June.

The draft constitution was rushed through the constituent assembly on Thursday night.

After receiving a copy of the document on Saturday, Mohammed Morsi called on “all Egyptians” to take part in the referendum, whether or not they agreed with the draft.

The draft constitution and the recent decree have prompted widespread protests by opponents.

Many anti-government activists remain camped out in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

If approved, the new text will overwrite all constitutional declarations – including Mohammed Morsi’s decree – and a new parliament should be elected within 60 days.

Among the historic changes to Egypt’s system of government, the draft limits a president to two four-year terms. It also introduces some civilian oversight of the military.

The draft keeps in place an article defining “principles of Sharia”, or Islamic law, as the main source of legislation.

Mohammed Morsi’s supporters point to the fact that he is Egypt’s first freely elected president and argue that liberals and secularists do not represent the vast majority of Egyptians.

But the extent of Mohammed Morsi’s new powers has raised fears that he might become a new dictator.

How Mitt Romney is coping with not being president

Former Republican candidate Mitt Romney has retreated into “seclusion” after his failed presidential run and has so little to do he is offering to change bedpans for sick friends to ease his boredom.

In a huge step down from the campaign trail, Mitt Romney is said to have reached out to a friend going through a liver transplant and offered to care for him.

Gone are Mitt Romney’s daily briefings with top aides and Secret Service entourage – now he spends his days alone on his iPad as he grapples with crushing disappointment.

An article in the Washington Post paints a picture of a man going through the awful low that presidential candidates have to deal with after they lose – in his case after six years of campaigning.

Exacerbating Mitt Romney’s plight is that unlike other failed contenders like John McCain and John Kerry, he does not have a job in the Senate to go back to.

Mitt Romney has also had to endure seeing wife Ann, who publicly admitted the campaign was very hard on her, cry in private as she takes it even worse than him.

According to the Washington Post, Ann and Mitt Romney thought it was their destiny to end up in the White House but are instead dealing with the wreckage of what went wrong.

Mitt Romney, 65, is holed up in his mansion on the seafront in La Jolla, an exclusive area of San Diego in California, taking visits from business colleagues and friends.

He has been going on bike rides to stay fit and recently welcomed his family to the home for Thanksgiving but ordered dinner from Boston Market as there were too many relatives to cook for them all.

Plans to renovate the home have been put on hold and the only construction going ahead is at Mitt  Romney’s neighbor’s mansion.

Mitt Romney has retreated into seclusion after his failed presidential run and has so little to do he is offering to change bedpans for sick friends to ease his boredom

Mitt Romney also spends a lot of time emailing friends and wrote to the one going through the liver transplant: “I’ll change your bedpan, take you back and forth to treatment.”

His adviser, Ron Kaufman said: “Is he disappointed? Of course he’s disappointed. He’s like 41.”

The reference is to President George H.W. Bush, who lost his reelection bid in 1992 to Bill Clinton.

“Forty-one would hate to lose a game of horseshoes to the gardener in the White House, and Mitt hates to lose. He’s a born competitor.”

Mitt Romney has ruled out taking up another position within the Republican party because of the way it treated him after the election.

When he claimed that President Barack Obama won a second term because of “gifts” he bestowed on the minorities, the Republican leadership effectively exiled him.

Now Mitt Romney is said to be considering a Clinton Global Initiative style organization which would allow him to do some good.

Robert Shrum, a senior strategist on Democratic presidential campaigns, said: “Nothing so unbecame his [Mitt Romney’s] campaign as his manner of leaving it.

“I don’t think he’ll ever be a significant figure in public life again.”

Recent pictures of Mitt Romney looking haggard do not tell the truth, friends say, and Romney is not letting himself go or holding a grudge.

Bitterness is “not in the Romney genetic code”, the Washington Post claims, and the worst thing he is going through right now is seeing Ann Romney so upset she can barely ride her beloved horses.

During the campaign Ann Romney, 63, who suffers from MS, attacked those who were criticizing the Romney camp and in one outburst said: “Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring.”

John Miller, a meatpacking magnate who co-chaired Mitt Romney’s finance committee and owns the beach house next door, said Romney was not a poor loser, but confirmed he was struggling.

He said: “He’s not crying on anybody’s shoulders.

“He’s not blaming anybody…He’s doing a lot of personal introspection about the whole process – and I’m not even sure that’s healthy.

“There’s nothing you can do about it now.”

Jovan Belcher’s mental state may have been deteriorated due to a history of head injuries, pain killers, and alcohol abuse

0

Friends of Kansas City Chief Jovan Belcher say his mental state may have been deteriorated due to a history of head injuries, pain killers, and alcohol abuse.

A person claiming to be close to Jovan Belcher has revealed in a series of e-mails that these issues as well as long-term domestic problems between himself and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins may have led Belcher to the murder-suicide he committed Saturday morning.

Jovan Belcher killed 22-year-old girlfriend and mother of his child Kasandra Perkins before driving to Arrowhead stadium and turning the gun on himself.

In a series of e-mails to Deadspin, the friend describes: “They have been arguing for quite sometime and had separated 2 weeks ago,” the anonymous friend wrote.

“He had brought her and the baby back home however, they were both arguing on a regular basis. Both of them are/were very young and immature and that combined with other factors led to this tragedy.”

Jovan Belcher’s friend adds that many of their recent arguments focused on Kasandra Perkins failing college classes Belcher paid for and quitting her retail job, as well as telling Belcher that she was leaving him and would find a lawyer to “get as much money as possible” from the football player.

Jovan Belcher may have reacted to all this differently if he wasn’t messed up from booze, meds, and taking shots to the head on the field.

“When it comes to prescription medication it is unclear from my perspective whether it was diagnosed and authorized by the team or not,” the friend wrote.

“However, I know he was under the influence of narcotics for pain and I’m sure the toxicology report will reflect this. However, Jovan drank ALOT. On a nightly basis. This is not a mystery as he did so in public and private.

“When it comes to his concussions; if you review the footage of the Cincinnati game he took a few hits to the head directly […] he was dazed and was suffering from short term memory loss. He could not remember the events that had taken place prior to that game or what he had said to get Kasi to return home.”

Rio Lagoa Christmas Tree 2012 celebrates the four seasons of the year

Rio might be low on snowmen, reindeer and fireplaces, but it can’t be beat on one Christmas tradition: the famous Lagoa Christmas tree, a 28-storey glittering behemoth of seasonal kitsch, which was officially opened on Saturday, December 1st.

The theme for 2012 tree, which floats atop the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon in Rio’s Zona Sul (South Zone), is All the Christmases of the World, and celebrates the four seasons of the year.

The much-anticipated inauguration kicked off the festive season with an event at Parque do Cantagalo (on the Ipanema/Copacabana side of the Lagoa) including fireworks and performance of The Wizard of Oz starring Malu Rodrigues, as Dorothy, and actor and presenter Luiz Carlos Miele as the Wizard of Oz.

Other cultural attractions included a suite from standby The Nutcracker, performed by The Dalal Achcar School of Ballet, and Christmas classics from Simone, Emilio Santiago, the Barra Mansa Symphony Orchestra and the Fundação Bradesco Choirs.

At 279 ft (85 m) and weighing some 542 tonnes – about the same as 66 full-grown African elephants – the structure is the largest floating model in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Sponsored by by Bradesco Seguros, it is illuminated by some 3.1 million microlamps, 120 kilometers of tube lights, and 100 LED spotlights, all mounted atop a base made entirely of lace-work.

Kim Kardashian wants her wedding to Kanye West to be a huge English event to rival that of Prince William and Kate Middleton

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West relationship is going from strength to strength, with Kim apparently planning her wedding to the rapper – although he has yet to propose.

According to reports, Kim Kardashian wants a wedding to rival that of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Although Kim Kardashian is still legally married to Kris Humphries she is reportedly already planning her nuptials and wants a huge English event.

A source said: “Kim would love to wed at Westminster Abbey like William and Catherine, but that won’t be possible.

“Instead she’s been looking at castles near London. She wants the most spectacular wedding and she’s talking about having guests like Jay-Z and Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan, Rihanna and Katy Perry arrive in horse drawn carriages – just like the royal wedding.”

Kim Kardashian reportedly also wants children with Kanye West and has her heart set on twins and is even planning a nursery even though she isn’t pregnant.

The source added to America’s OK! magazine: “It’s going to be huge – at least 2,000 square feet. And luxury is top priority from the carpet to the light fixtures. Kim and Kanye love Old Hollywood so that’s going to be a theme with lots of white and cream with splashes of butter yellow and black and some leopard print.”

Kim Kardashian reveals large sore on her upper lip

Tired looking Kim Kardashian revealed a painful-looking large sore on her upper lip, along with blemishes on her chin as she flew into Miami on Sunday.

Dressed down Kim Kardashian had tied her hair back in a simple bun for her flight, while she wore a simple and conservative outfit of black trousers and white blazer.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Kim Kardashian were feeling a little under the weather.

The reality star had just stepped off an 18 hour flight – which even in first class is bound to be a strain. She jokingly tweeted: “18 hour flight…fun!”

Adding to the stress on her body the reality star was returning from a three-day whirlwind tour of the Gulf, in which she opened milkshake shops in Kuwait and Bahrain.

It was just the latest long haul flight for permanently jet lagged Kim Kardashian. In recent weeks she has visited Italy, London and Los Angeles.

But there isn’t likely to be much of a break for Kim Kardashian, who is in the midst of filming her new reality show, Kourtney And Kim Take Miami.

Kim Kardashian suffers from the skin condition psoriasis, and on her reality show has previously talked about how she uses makeup to disguise the effects.

The hereditary disease was passed down from her mother Kris Jenner.

And while the condition is incurable, the best way to manage it is to lead a “slower-paced life”.

However, busy Kim kardashian has conceded that this is impossible, adding: “People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect.”

But while she may be exhausted, at least Kim Kardashian will get a warm welcome in Miami, with sisters Khloe and Kourtney both in town this weekend.

She will also be looking forward to catching up with her boyfriend Kanye West, having tweeted: “I miss you so much,” to her lover while she was away.

Kennedy Center Honors 2012: Barack Obama honors seven of the most influential artists in US

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were in fine form during Sunday night’s Kennedy Center Honors, laughing and holding hands at the event, which recognize the nation’s most culturally influential artists, performers, actors, and musicians.

Wearing a stunning Michael Kors gold lamé dress embellished at the neckline, Michelle Obama dazzled as she entered the East Room of the White House with her husband, who was wearing a smartly-tailored tuxedo and an American flag on his lapel.

Barack Obama honored seven of the country’s most influential artists, including Dustin Hoffman, Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy, late night host David Letterman, ballerina Natalia Markarova, and surviving members of rock band Led Zeppelin.

The festivities later transitioned to the Kennedy Center, where fellow performers put on a show which will be broadcast later this month.

Stars from New York, Hollywood and the music world gathered Sunday in Washington to salute the honorees who were tonight receiving the nation’s highest award for artistically influential Americans.

“Tonight, we continue a tradition here at the White House by honoring some extraordinary people who have no business being on the same stage together,” Barack Obama began, joking to the recipients.

The president hailed the drive and vision of the honorees, noting that many, like blues musician Buddy Guy, grew up in conditions that didn’t foster creativity. Buddy Guy, for instance, was born into a family of Louisiana sharecroppers with no electricity or running water.

He went on to pioneer the use of distortion and feedback with his electric guitar.

“[Their] passion took each of them from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of their profession,” Barack Obama said, according to The Hill.

“Tonight in the People’s House, we have a chance to say thank you.”

Former president Bill Clinton also offered lavish praise to Buddy Guy.

“Buddy Guy’s life is a miracle,” Bill Clinton said.

“Just imagine you want to be a guitar player and you get your first strings by tearing off the screen door. … He came from that to this.”

Late-night host David Letterman was one of the seven honored in the annual awards ceremony.
Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel joined in celebrating David Letterman’s influence on many other comedians.

“I knew Johnny, and I loved Johnny. Johnny was beyond reproach,” Stephen Colbert said in a toast to David Letterman.

“Dave was stupid. Dave was ours. Dave was like us.

“We wanted to throw things off of buildings. … We would love to stick our heads out the window of 30 Rock and yell at passers-by, <<I’m not wearing any pants!>>.”

Stephen Colbert marveled at David Letterman receiving such an award after he “corrupted the minds of a generation”.

Paul Shaffer, David Letterman’s longtime band leader, said he knew his boss was uncomfortable hearing such accolades, but that he knew Letterman was enjoying every second of it.

Meryl Streep introduced the honorees Saturday during a formal dinner at the U.S. State Department and noted that David Letterman had surpassed his mentor, Johnny Carson, in sustaining the longest late-night television career for more than 30 years.

To salute Led Zeppelin, big names from the rock world dressed in black tie for their music heroes as a string ensemble played the band’s hit song “Kashmir” and other tunes at the State Department.

Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl said he never took any music lessons when he was starting out because “my teachers were Led Zeppelin. … They were the most powerful thing in my life”.

Lenny Kravitz said their influential music, at its zenith in the 1970s, became a lasting part of the culture of rock and roll.

“It’s very difficult,” he said.

“You get four guys that come together and make something so much more powerful than they all are.”

Zeppelin front man Robert Plant said he was flattered and overwhelmed in receiving the American culture prize. He said he was glad to see his former band mates, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, using good table manners.

The trio is scheduled to appear Monday on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. They are often asked if they’ll reunite. Robert Plant told The Associated Press he plans to continue traveling the world and wants to make new music along the way.

“If anybody wants to write some new songs, I’m game to write songs,” he said.

Dustin Hoffman was honored for charting his own path after taking a junior college class in acting that “nobody ever flunks”.

Meryl Streep, a 2011 honoree, said Dustin Hoffman’s quest to become an actor required waiting tables and typing for the yellow pages by day.

“He’d do anything if it meant at night he could find himself on the stage,” she said.

Glenn Close toasted Dustin Hoffman for defining the character actor as leading man in such movies as The Graduate, Rain Man and Tootsie – and as an artist who insisted on setting the highest standards for himself.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the ballerina Natalia Makarova “risked everything to have the freedom to dance the way she wanted to dance” when she defected from the Soviet Union in 1970.

Natalia Makarova quickly made her debut with the American Ballet Theatre and later was the first exiled artist to return to the Soviet Union before its fall to dance with the Kirov Ballet.

Hillary Clinton also took special note of David Letterman, saying he must be wondering what he’s doing in a crowd of talented artists and musicians.

“Dave and I have a history,” she said.

“I have been a guest on his show several times, and if you include references to my pant suits, I’m on at least once a week.”

The crowd of artists and entertainers gave Hillary Clinton a standing ovation as she hosted her final salute to the nation’s artists as secretary of State.

Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein gave her a subtle nudge to run for president in 2016, saying there’s another room at the State Department to name after a secretary who later becomes president.

Borut Pahor wins Slovenia’s presidential election

Borut Pahor, former Slovenian prime minister, has won an emphatic victory in the country’s presidential run-off election.

With almost all votes counted, Borut Pahor polled 67% to incumbent President Danilo Turk’s 33% in a poll following days of protests over the economy and alleged government corruption.

On Friday a number of people were injured as protesters clashed with police in the capital Ljubljana.

Slovenia is facing one of the eurozone’s deepest recessions.

The country’s economy has shrunk more than 8% since 2009.

Thirty-three people were charged with public order offences after the trouble in Ljubljana, police said.

A protest that attracted thousands of people earlier in the week in the second city, Maribor, also turned violent.

Polls across Slovenia opened at 07:00 local time and closed at 19:00.

Commenting on the recent protests in the country, Borut Pahor told the Associated Press that the demonstrations “signal a lack of confidence” in government institutions.

Many protesters are angry at what they describe as harsh austerity measures being implemented by the current centre-right government.

They also accuse the government of corruption – a claim denied by the authorities.

Sleeping for an hour or more extra a night can reduce sensitivity to pain

0

Scientists have found that sleeping for an hour or more extra a night can dramatically improve an individual’s alertness and reduce their sensitivity to pain.

In fact, say the researchers, getting nearly 10 hours a night – rather than the recommended 8 – is more effective at reducing pain than taking the drug codeine.

The study used 18 healthy, pain-free volunteers who were randomly assigned either four nights of their normal sleep pattern or four nights of 10 hours in bed.

The American researchers measured daytime sleepiness using the multiple sleep latency test – a standard method used by doctors to diagnose sleep problems in which brain waves, eye movement, heart rate and muscle tone are measured.

Pain sensitivity was assessed using a heat source.

Results showed the extended sleep group slept 1.8 hours more per night than those on a regular sleeping pattern. This was associated with increased daytime alertness and significantly less pain sensitivity.

Those getting more sleep were able to keep their finger on a heat source for 25% longer, showing a loss of pain sensitivity.

The findings, published in the journal Sleep, also revealed the magnitude of this increase is greater than the effect found in a previous study of 60 mg of codeine.

The results, combined with data from previous research, suggest increased pain sensitivity in tired people is the result of their underlying sleepiness.

Dr. Timothy Roehrs, an expert in sleep disorders and their treatment based at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said: “Our results suggest the importance of adequate sleep in various chronic pain conditions or in preparation for elective surgical procedures.

“We were surprised by the magnitude of the reduction in pain sensitivity, when compared to the reduction produced by taking codeine.”

Chris Brown shares black-and-white picture having fun with Rihanna

Chris Brown further fueled rumors of a rekindled romance with his ex-girlfriend Rihanna by posting a black-and-white picture of the pair enjoying smoke-filled fun times on a couch Sunday morning.

In the candid snap, Chris Brown, 23, has a hand-rolled spliff in his mouth as clouds of smoke billow around the 24-year-old pop star who revealed her bare midriff while enveloped in a large camouflage coat.

Meanwhile Breezy, whose brutal assault on Rihanna in 2009 left her hospitalized, was dressed casually in a baseball cap and white t-shirt.

The noted marijuana aficionado publicly has flaunted her love of herb.

Last summer, Rihanna was seen wearing a “how-to-roll-a-joint” T-shirt while grabbing late-night munchies at Giorgio Baldi.

Rihanna also tweeted a picture of herself holding a joint wrapped in colorful, patterned rolling papers.

Back in May, Rihanna posted a bizarre photo on her Instagram of a woman smoking a joint so enormous it required three women to hold it up and a fourth to light it.

“Why she suckin on my soul mate???” tweeted Rihanna, who has called reggae legend Bob Marley her “hero”.

And when photos of Rihanna appearing to roll a marijuana blunt on her bodyguard’s head emerged from the Coachella Music Festival in April, she irreverently addressed the snaps by tweeting: “@rihanna ran out of f***s to give.”

Meanwhile Chris Brown just reactivated his Twitter Sunday after shutting it down following a Twitter war with comedian Jenny Johnson, but he’s opted to use his Instagram instead.

“I used to use my Twitter account to vent, but now I mostly use it for marketing and promotions,” the Grammy winner recently told XXL.

“Even if the media asks me something, if it’s cool then it’s, <<What’s up?>>. But if it’s anything that’s too negative, I don’t care to respond.”

Chris Brown then added: “In the beginning, I used to be hot. I’m normal. I’m human, so if anybody says something that’s a lie, I’m numb to it. I’ve smartened up.”

Rihanna and Chris Brown couple have been posting suggestive pictures for weeks, including one image of a new gold choker – believed to be a gift from Chris – with the caption: “He told me <<you better not give it away>>.”

The Barbadian beauty made sure to show off the new sparkler on her neck while launching her third fragrance Nude at Macy’s Westfield Saturday.

Egyptair resumes Syria flights to Damascus and Aleppo

Egyptair has announced it will resume flights to the Syrian cities of Damascus and Aleppo on Monday, after a three-day suspension by many airlines over security on the airport roads.

It said the road in Damascus, scene of heavy fighting and bombardment by government jets, was now secure.

Earlier a car bomb killed at least 15 people in the Syrian city of Homs, state-run Sana news agency reported.

At least 24 were hurt in the blast in the government-held al-Hamra district.

Video footage posted online showed flames and smoke.

Meanwhile the army is continuing to batter rebel-held districts of Damascus with airstrikes and heavy artillery.

Activists say about 40,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.

Egyptair head Roshdi Zakaria said a decision had been taken to resume flights after consulting with airline staff in Syria and the Egyptian embassy in Damascus.

Egyptair has announced it will resume flights to the Syrian cities of Damascus and Aleppo on Monday, after a three-day suspension by many airlines over security on the airport roads

Many flights in and out of Damascus were cancelled on Thursday and Friday after heavy fighting on the main road to the airport, which is the country’s busiest.

The government said on Saturday that the airport had reopened and domestic flights were operating, but international flights remained suspended.

Also on Saturday, internet services around Damascus resumed after a two-day blackout.

Homs, Syria’s third-largest city, has been a major battleground in the 20-month uprising.

On Sunday Sana reported a “terrorist bombing carried out with a booby trapped bomb” near a mosque in al-Hamra district.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based activist group that monitors the violence, said the death toll could increase as many of the wounded were in a critical condition.

In Damascus the army pounded the district Kfar Sousa, in a attempt to stop rebel forces from reaching the capital, activists said.

Elsewhere, the Syrian army launched air strikes on the northern city of Aleppo, the Observatory said.

The Syrian government blames the uprising on foreign-backed militant groups.

Good sense of smell is the key to a happy long-term relationship

0

New research suggests the way to a happy long-term union could be a good sense of smell, after a study looked for the first time at the importance of a healthy nose on our relationships.

Analyzing men and women born without a sense of smell, the journal, Biological Psychology, compared data on people aged between 18 and 46 with and without the ability to smell.

The results showed men and women unable to smell were more insecure, with men particularly affected when it comes to finding love.

Men with a malfunctioning sense of smell averaged just two partners compared to 10 with those with fully functioning nostrils.

Scientists believe this is because men with a poor sense of smell become less adventurous and have problems assessing and communicating with the opposite sex.

It is thought this could be down to concerns about their body odor and how they are perceived by others.

Women in both categories had on average the same number of partners – four – but those who couldn’t smell lacked confidence in their partners and were on average 20% less secure than females who could.

Significantly, a woman’s lack of smell had no impact on her friendships, suggesting smell is only key for females when it comes to relationships.

Smelling, or olfaction, is generally the least understood of the senses but it is increasingly recognized as having an important role in a large number of areas.

According to the Independent on Sunday, one study says women are more concerned about the way a potential date smells than looks, while another report found 13% of men and 52% of women have slept in the clothing of a partner because of the aroma.

“The sense of smell provides social information about others,” according to researchers from the University of Dresden.

“Its absence is related with reduced social security in men and women, and affects partnerships.

“Men exhibit much less explorative sexual behavior and women are affected in a way that they feel less secure about their partner. Our results show the importance of the sense of smell for social behavior.”

Smell has long been portrayed as a trigger for arousal in men in a number of films, including Al Pacino’s Scent of a Woman, where lead character Colonel Frank Slade can name or describe the appearance of women by their perfume alone.

Mahmoud Abbas cheered in Ramallah after UN vote

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has returned to a hero’s welcome in the West Bank after his successful move to upgrade the Palestinians’ UN status.

“Now we have a state,” Mahmoud Abbas told cheering supporters in Ramallah.

“Palestine has accomplished a historic achievement.”

On Thursday the United Nations General Assembly voted to recognize the Palestinians as an observer state.

In response Israel halted the transfer of tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The decision, announced on Sunday by the Israeli finance ministry, means 460 million shekels ($120 million) will be withheld in December.

The Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs in the West Bank, is heavily dependant on tax revenues Israel collects on its behalf.

A ministry spokesman said the money would instead be used to offset the PA’s debts, which include millions owed to Israel’s electricity company.

The Israeli decision was announced as Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas returned to the West Bank from the UN in New York.

He told thousands of flag-waving supporters in Ramallah that the vote to upgrade the Palestinians’ status from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state” had shown the international community stood behind the Palestinian people.

“The march was a long one, and the pressures were enormous,” Mahmoud Abbas added.

“But we stood fast and we prevailed, because we are the voice of these people.”

Mahmoud Abbas also called for reconciliation between Palestinians – a reference to the split between the PA in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza.

On Friday Israel announced it would move ahead with building thousands of new homes in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, in another apparent response to the UN vote.

At a meeting on Sunday, Israel’s cabinet formally rejected the UN’s decision.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the campaign for Palestinian statehood spearheaded by President Mahmoud Abbas “a gross violation of the agreements signed with the state of Israel”, a reference to peace accords signed in the 1990s.

He said that only negotiations with Israel could lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Pier Luigi Bersani and Matteo Renzi in Italian centre-left Democratic Party poll

Italians have been voting in the final round of the contest for the leadership of the centre-left Democratic Party.

The run-off vote pitches veteran party leader Pier Luigi Bersani against Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi.

With the party leading opinion polls, the winner has a good chance of becoming Italy’s next PM in elections scheduled for early 2013, analysts say.

Those elections will choose a successor to PM Mario Monti’s government.

Mario Monti’s successor will face the challenge of addressing Italy’s deep-rooted economic problems.

Pier Luigi Bersani won the party’s primary on 25 November, winning 45% of the vote to Matteo Renzi’s 35.5%.

The two men are very different characters, with tieless, youthful Matteo Renzi, 37, painting himself as the voice of a new generation which wants to sweep away the entire class of older politicians.

By contrast, 61-year-old Pier Luigi Bersani is very much a figure from that older generation.

Timothy Geithner and John Boehner in fiscal cliff talks stalemate

Timothy Geithner, the US treasury Secretary, has said there will be no deal to avert a “fiscal cliff” unless Republicans accept a tax hike for the wealthy.

But House Speaker John Boehner has dismissed a 10-year plan, which aims to raise $1.6 trillion through tax rises and spending cuts, as “silliness”.

The two men met on Thursday as time runs out to broker a deal.

Economists warn planned tax rises and spending cuts due to take effect on January 1st could trigger a recession.

Timothy Geithner, negotiating for the White House, has drafted a plan that includes more spending to help for the unemployed and struggling homeowners, as well as cuts in Medicare and other benefits.

On Friday President Barack Obama warned of a “Scrooge Christmas” if soon-to-expire tax breaks for households earning below $250,000 were not renewed as part of the deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

But John Boehner, negotiating for the Republicans who control the House of Representatives, said talks with the administration had so far gone “almost nowhere”.

Timothy Geithner and John Boehner’s appearances on a number of Sunday television talk shows showed how entrenched their positions were.

US treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said there will be no deal to avert a fiscal cliff unless Republicans accept a tax hike for the wealthy
US treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said there will be no deal to avert a fiscal cliff unless Republicans accept a tax hike for the wealthy

“There’s not going to be an agreement without rates going up. There’s not,” Timothy Geithner told CNN’s State of the Union.

He called on Republicans to make a counter-offer to the Obama administration’s plan.

But John Boehner said he was “flabbergasted” by Timothy Geithner’s proposals – which he said asked Congress to give up its power to set the nation’s debt limit.

“What do you think would happen if we gave the president $1.6 trillion of new money?” John Boehner asked Fox News Sunday.

“He’d spend it.”

John Boehner says asking the top 2% of US taxpayers to pay more would deal a “crippling blow” to a fragile economy, and has criticized the Obama administration’s proposed spending cuts as inadequate.

The White House has suggested it would not support any deal that did not increase tax rates on the wealthiest.

The fiscal cliff would suck about $600 billion out of the economy.

The measures were partly put in place within a 2011 deal to curb the yawning US budget deficit.

What is the fiscal cliff?

  • Under a deal reached last year by the White House and the Republicans, existing stimulus measures – mostly tax cuts – will expire on 1 January 2013
  • Cuts to defence, education and other spending will then automatically come into force – the “fiscal cliff” – unless Congress acts
  • The economy does not have the momentum to absorb the shock from going over the fiscal cliff without going into recession

The Hobbit: cinema-goers complain 3D effects and camera speeds caused headaches and dizziness

Cinema-goers have complained of feeling sick and dizzy after watching early screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Hobbit is the first to be shot using high-speed 3D cameras that capture twice the normal number of frames per second.

But some viewers said the filming techniques made them feel nauseous and even caused migraines.

The Sunday Times reported one “avid Middle Earth fan”, who had flown to New Zealand from Australia for the premiere, said: “My eyes cannot take everything in, it’s dizzying, now I have a migraine.”

Another fan tweeted: “It works for the big snowy mountains, but in close-ups the pictures strobes. I left loving the movie but feeling sick.”

The Sunday Times said one fan described having motion sickness similar to being on a rollercoaster.

They said: “You have to hold your stomach down and let your eyes pop at first to adjust. This is not for wimps.”

However, others praised the way the film – starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins – had been shot.

Hollywood director Bryan Singer wrote on Twitter after the world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Wednesday: “Having some serious frame rate envy. Amazing and involving. Loved it!”

The 3D company that worked with Peter Jackson on the shoot said the new technology should actually stop people feeling ill.

Matt Cowan, chief scientist at RealD, told stuff.co.nz: “What you will experience is smoother motion.

“The effect you get for things like explosions is much more real.

“It is a great experiment and kudos to Peter Jackson for doing it.”
The Hobbit – the first in a trilogy – is shot at a camera speed of 48 frames per second – double that normally used.

Cinema-goers have complained of feeling sick and dizzy after watching early screenings of The Hobbit
Cinema-goers have complained of feeling sick and dizzy after watching early screenings of The Hobbit

Critics did not react warmly to an unfinished version of the film describing it as looking like a “made for television BBC movie – so uncompromisingly real, slightly sped up, that it looked fake. It was jarring”.

The movie came under fire earlier this year after critics who had seen ten minutes of the unfinished film compared it to a made-for-television film.

Ian McKellen, who reprises his role as Gandalf in the film, defended it as ‘more exciting’ and said the 3D brings fans into Middle Earth.

Thousands of people crowded into central Wellington, New Zealand, for the chance to see some of the films stars including Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum.

The second film The Desolation of Smaug will be released in 2013 with There and Back Again released the following year.

What 48 frames per second means?

Movies have been filmed in 24 frame per second (fps) shots since 1927.

It means each second of picture contains 24 still images that create the illusion of movement when put in sequence.

American film director Doug Trumbull invented and promoted a 60 frame per second process called ShowScan 30 years ago but it was not widely used.

The new technology means every second of shot will contain 48 still images – and The Hobbit is the first major studio film to be shot at the higher rate.

The resulting movie should be clearer with images that look more details, “sharp”, and less blurred.

However, some critics have argued that the sharper image makes the film look too similar to television – which is shot at 50 fpm – and ruins the cinema experience.

Director Peter Jackson hopes more than 10,000 cinemas will be able to project the film at the higher frame rate.

But the vast majority of cinemas are currently only able to show the standard 24 fpm.

Therefore the film is being released in six different versions – 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX, all in both 24fps and 48fps.

Peter Jackson said the high speed of frames gives a “hugely enhanced clarity and smoothness” and also claims it cuts down eye strain from watching 3D.

Director James Cameron has said he wants to film the two sequels to his film Avatar at a higher frame rate than 24 frames per second, in order to add a heightened sense of reality.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s lost copy of Battle of Anghiari found by Italian police

Italian specialist art theft police have tracked down and brought home a 400-year-old copy of a lost Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece – an incomplete fresco painting of the Battle of Anghiari.

It once decorated a wall of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, the Tuscan city’s monumental town hall.

The copy is temporarily on show until the New Year at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, the official residence of the president of Italy.

Battle of Anghiari painting shows a group of men-at-arms and knights on horseback engaged in close combat, fighting for possession of a flag.

The historic battle between Florence and its allies against a numerically superior force from Milan took place in 1440, and the Florentines won.

Art historians believe that Leonardo Da Vinci, experimenting with various fresco painting techniques, started painting the battle scene in 1503, using sketches he had been preparing for years.

But he never completed the project. The paint began to drip after he applied color to the walls.

Trying to save what he could, he applied large charcoal braziers close to the painting. But the colors intermingled and only part of the fresco was completed.

Within a few years, after the fresco had deteriorated, the Hall of the Five Hundred was restructured and Giorgio Vasari was commissioned by the local ruler to paint a different battle scene to replace Leonardo’s flawed work.

Italian specialist art theft police have tracked down and brought home a 400-year-old copy of a lost Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece, an incomplete fresco painting of the Battle of Anghiari

Giorgio Vasari, later a biographer of Leonardo Da Vinci, actually saw the cartoon, or preliminary drawing on paper of the battle scene, which he described in glowing terms.

“It would be impossible to express the inventiveness of Leonardo’s design for the soldiers’ uniforms, or the crests of the helmets, not to mention the incredible skill he demonstrated in the shape and features of the horses, which Leonardo, better than any other master, created with their boldness, muscles and graceful beauty,” he wrote.

So we only have copies to enable us to imagine Leonardo Da Vinci’s original design.

Peter Paul Rubens, using an engraving done 50 years after Leonardo started his project, did a masterly drawing of the Battle of Anghiari which is now in the Louvre in Paris.

“The idea that an ancient copy of a lost artwork can be as important as the original is familiar to scholars,” says Salvatore Settis, archaeologist and art historian.

“Most important original Greek bronze statues were lost when they were melted down and are known today only through marble copies done by admiring Romans centuries later,” he told a packed lecture at which details of the copy of Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece were revealed to the public.

The painting – on a small wooden panel measuring 115 x 86 cm (45×34 in) – was last seen in public 73 years ago on the eve of World War II, when it was shown at a Leonardo exhibition in Milan.

Then it disappeared.

But the Italian carabinieri police department which specializes in art theft patiently managed to track the clandestine life of the painting – known as the Doria panel from the name of the family in whose art collection it had remained for three centuries.

After being stolen from its owners in Naples, the panel passed into the possession of a Swiss art dealer, was sent to Germany for restoration in the 1960s, then turned up briefly at a New York art gallery in the 1970s before ending up in the collection of a wealthy Japanese art collector in the 1990s.

The painting will be shown at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence during 2013 and will then go on loan for four years back to Japan – under an agreement worked out with the Fuji Art Museum in Tokyo, where it was last exhibited.

Meanwhile, at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, work has been suspended on a project by an Italian engineer Maurizio Seracini who has been trying to prove scientifically by taking microscopic samples of pigment from the wall that Leonardo’s lost painting may still be hidden under Giorgio Vasari’s later battle scene.

Earlier this year, the mayor of Florence ordered a stop to all invasive technology inside the Hall of the Five Hundred.

So for the moment, the battle between scientists analyzing layers of pigment and ancient walls with space age technology, and scholars who insist that they have documentary evidence that Leonardo Da Vinci’s original Battle of Anghiari no longer exists has ended in a truce.

Antonio de la Rua sues Shakira for $100 million over past and future partnership profits

Shakira is being sued for $100 million by former boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, who acted as her business manager for six years.

Antonio de la Rua claims he was the “principal architect” of a business plan that turned Shakira into a global superstar.

He is seeking to “recover his share of past and future partnership profits,” according to papers filed in New York.

In a separate case, Shakira is suing Antonio de la Rua for misappropriation of funds.

Her legal case, filed in the Bahamas in October, accuses him of paying himself an unauthorized bonus and using funds from their business partnership to pay personal expenses.

Antonio De la Rua denies the allegations.

His legal papers, however, provide a rare insight into the intricacies of sustaining a global pop career.

Antonio de la Rua explains how the couple met in 2000, shortly after he had managed his father Fernando’s successful campaign to become president of Argentina.

As they became romantically involved, he frequently joined her on her first world tour – The Tour Of The Mongoose. He describes how, as it came to a close, the star was “shocked” to learn the tour had “actually lost money”.

The news caused the performer “extreme emotional distress and interfered with her ability to sleep and perform”. She sacked her manager, and asked Antonio De la Rua to take over her business affairs.

They agreed he would be entitled to a share of the profits from her music and business ventures “in exchange for the contribution of his business and marketing skills, knowledge and expertise”.

But his court papers acknowledge that the partnership, which began in 2004, was based only on an “oral agreement”.

Antonio De la Rua goes on to describe how he brokered a $300 million deal with concert promoters Live Nation and a “lucrative” deal for a range of perfumes.

He was also instrumental in persuading a reluctant Shakira to record the song Hips Don’t Lie in order to reverse flagging sales of her Oral Fixation Vol. 2 album. The song went on to top the charts in more than 25 countries.

The court papers describe a similar situation in 2009, when the first single from Shakira’s She Wolf album “bombed”.

Antonio de la Rua claims to have brokered a deal for Shakira to record the official World Cup song Waka Waka, the success of which ensured a profitable world tour which “saved the relationship” with Live Nation.

The legal papers add: “The combination of de la Rua’s business and marketing talents with defendant’s artistic talents, beauty and sex appeal succeeded in propelling the value of the partnership far beyond anything either had previously achieved or believed possible.”

When the couple broke up in 2010, Shakira announced the news on her website, but stressed “we continue to be partners in our business and professional lives”.

But a year later, in October 2011, the pop star instructed her lawyer to “terminate de la Rua, as if he were a mere employee,” the legal papers claim.

Antonio De la Rua said he has not received his share of the profits since then, and is seeking a payment of “not less than $100 million” at trial.

At the time of writing, Shakira’s representatives had not responded to the complaint.

Shakira is currently expecting her first child with footballer Gerard Pique, who plays for FC Barcelona. She has also signed up as a coach for the next series of The Voice in the US.

The letter, which dates from Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion of Russia, was bought by the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in Paris.

Before the auction, Jean Christophe Chataignier, director of the Osenat auction house, said the 1812 letter was expected to fetch between 10,000 and 15,000 euros.

It was written by Napoleon to Foreign Minister Hugues-Bernard Maret, who was at Vilnius in modern-day Lituania.

Having captured Moscow but with the Russian army having withdrawn and winter approaching, the emperor realized he had to turn back.

The first line reads: “On the 22nd at 3am I will be blowing up the Kremlin.”

The letter also reveals Napoleon’s frustration at the campaign, with his army ravaged by disease, cold and hunger: “My cavalry is in tatters, a lot of horses are dying. Make sure we buy more as soon as possible.”

Napoleon kept the promise to blow up the Moscow Kremlin, destroying the Kremlin’s walls and towers before retreating with his army, beginning a decline in his power that would lead to his abdication and exile just two years later.
