Google Keep: Google joins digital memo market with new service

Google’s new service, Keep, allows users to keep checklists and voice notes, and annotate photos.

The digital memo market is a burgeoning one and the offering will put Google head to head with services such as Evernote.

Experts predict that Google might have entered the market a little too late.

Memory aid services are striking a chord with consumers and employees who are increasingly swamped by information.

Current market leader Evernote has 15 million active users.

Microsoft has a similar product – OneNote – and there are smaller rivals such as Springpad and Catch.

“Every day we all see, hear or think of things we need to remember. Usually we grab a pad of sticky notes, scribble a reminder and put it on the desk, the fridge or the relevant page of a magazine,” said Google software engineer Katherine Kuan in a blog post.

Keep is Google’s attempt to turn this ad-hoc notetaking into a more efficient digital service.

“With Keep you can quickly jot ideas down when you think of them and even include checklists and photos to keep track of what’s important to you,” she added.

The information is stored in Google Drive. Users can also speak memos and Keep transcribes them. And there is a search facility for people to quickly find what they are looking for.

Currently Keep is available only via the web or as an app for phones and tablets running Android 4.0 or above.

But with little to differentiate it from competitors, some feel Google may struggle to make an impact.

“My gut instinct is that Google may have come too late to this. It has a track record – with cloud services and social networking – of coming too late and struggling to make an impact,” said Chris Green, principal technology analyst at Davies Murphy Group.

“But, if anyone can make an impact, it will be Google,” he added.

“If there is an 800 lb gorilla like Google behind you, you are going to be worried. Evernote cannot rest on its laurels but it does have a huge user base and they are not all going to desert it overnight.”

PKK’s Abdullah Ocalan calls for Turkey truce after 30 years of war

Kurdish rebels’ leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is now jailed in Turkey, has called for a truce after 30 years of war.

Abdullah Ocalan also urged his fighters to withdraw from Turkey, in a message read out to cheers during Kurdish New Year celebrations in the city of Diyarbakir.

The Turkish government cautiously welcomed the call, which follows months of talks between the PKK and Turkey.

More than 40,000 people have died in the 30-year fight for an ethnic Kurdish homeland in Turkey’s south-east.

Hundreds of thousands of people were present in Diyarbarkir to hear Abdullah Ocalan’s message.

“The language spoken is that of peace. We should see the implementation,” Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Several previous ceasefire attempts between the two sides have failed.

However, the announcement is potentially an important step towards ending the 30-year long conflict between Kurdish rebels and the Turkish state.

This time, Abdullah Ocalan and Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan – the two key figures involved – are talking via intermediaries. But the real test of the announcement will be in its implementation.

Abdullah Ocalan is still the final decision-maker among the Kurds, despite the 14 years he has spent in jail. He is serving a life sentence for treason.

PKK chief Abdullah Ocalan calls for ceasefire after 30 years of war with Turkey
PKK chief Abdullah Ocalan calls for ceasefire after 30 years of war with Turkey

The announcement was read out in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in Kurdish and in Turkish.

“We have reached the point where weapons should be silent and ideas and politics should speak. A new phase in our struggle is beginning,” Abdullah Ocalan’s message said.

“Now a door is opening to a phase where we are moving from armed resistance to an era of democratic political struggle.

“Now it is time for our armed units to move across the border [to northern Iraq]. This is not an end but a new beginning. This is not abandoning the struggle, but a start to a different struggle.”

It is not immediately clear when this withdrawal will take place – or whether the PKK will ultimately choose to disarm.

Abdullah Ocalan had told Kurdish politicians who visited him earlier this week at his prison on the island of Imrali that his declaration would be “historic”.

In February the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) leader, who has been in Turkish custody since his capture in Kenya in 1999, called for prisoners to be released by both sides.

The PKK freed eight Turkish soldiers and officials it had held captive in northern Iraq for up to two years.

The PKK launched its armed campaign in 1984 and is regarded by Turkey, the US and EU as a terrorist organization. Last year saw some of the heaviest fighting in decades.

The organization rolled back on its demands for an independent Kurdish state in the 1990s, calling instead for more autonomy.

Reports say the PKK wish list now includes greater constitutional and linguistic rights for Kurds, as well as an easing of pressure on Kurdish activists.

The government has also not dismissed speculation that Abdullah Ocalan could be moved to house arrest.

On the eve of the truce call, Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned a number of blasts in the capital blamed on a left-wing group which opposes the talks with the PKK. He promised to push ahead with “extremely critical and sensitive” peace efforts, which have been going on since October.

Abdullah Demirbas, a district mayor in Diyarbakir, told Reuters news agency there would be more attempts to sabotage talks, but this was a last chance for peace.

“The PKK, Ocalan and the government must be brave… There is massive social support for this process.”

Yityish Aynaw, first black Miss Israel, invited to gala dinner with Barack Obama

Yityish Aynaw, an immigrant orphan from Ethiopia, who became the first black Miss Israel last month, has been invited to Thursday’s gala dinner with visiting President Barack Obama.

Yityish Aynaw arrived in Israel at 12. Her mother had just died, leaving her an orphan as her father had died years earlier.

Her mother’s parents, who were among thousands of Ethiopian Jews already living in Israel, arrived in Addis Ababa to fetch Yityish and her older brother.

In their new home, Yityish Aynaw and her brother had to learn Hebrew from scratch.

After school, like most other Israelis, she performed military service. She then stayed on in the army and was serving as an officer when she left, after three years, in September last year.

Before she was selected as Miss Israel on February 27, Yityish Aynaw was a manager in a shoe shop in Netanya.

During the competition she named the black American civil rights leader Martin Luther King as one of her heroes.

Yityish Aynaw says she hopes her victory will “achieve the acceptance of everyone in Israel”.

Ethiopians often complain about discrimination when it comes to jobs, education and housing. There were even allegations last year that some new Ethiopian immigrants have been given contraceptive injections against their will.

Pope Francis to wash Rome prisoners’ feet while celebrating Holy Thursday Mass

Pope Francis will wash the feet of prisoners in a youth detention centre in Rome while he will celebrate Mass on Holy Thursday, the Vatican has said.

The Vatican says the pontiff is continuing a pre-Easter practice that began when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires.

Normally feet-washing Masses before Easter are held in the Vatican or a Rome basilica.

However, Pope Benedict XVI held a feet-washing Mass at the same Casal del Marmo youth detention centre in Rome in 2007.

Pope Francis will stage his feet-washing ceremony at Casal del Marmo on the afternoon of March 28.

The washing of feet on the Thursday before Easter is a Christian tradition dating back to the time of Christ.

During the service, the pontiff washes and kisses the feet of 12 people to replicate the Bible’s account of Jesus Christ’s gesture of humility towards his 12 apostles on the night before he was crucified.

“With this celebration at Casal del Marmo, Pope Francis will continue this custom, which is characterized by its humble context,” a statement by the Vatican said.

It said that Pope Francis would also celebrate Mass earlier on Holy Thursday in St Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis has called for the Roman Catholic Church to be closer to ordinary people, especially the poor and disadvantaged.

Cyprus drops controversial bank levy in a new bailout plan

The Cypriot political leaders have dropped the unpopular levy on bank deposits in a new bailout plan.

There was outrage over an earlier plan to tax all bank deposits.

Cyprus’ banks, which have been shut all week to prevent mass withdrawals, are to stay closed until next Tuesday, March 26.

Cyprus is required to find 7 billion euros ($9 billion) to get a 10 billion-euro EU-IMF loan. Cypriot officials now propose a state investment fund and special bond issue to raise 5.8 billion euros.

The other 1.2 billion would be raised through privatizations and by increasing capital gains tax and the corporate tax rate.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has warned it may halt emergency funding on Monday if Cyprus fails to come up with a viable rescue plan by then.

Cypriot political leaders have dropped the unpopular levy on bank deposits in a new bailout plan
Cypriot political leaders have dropped the unpopular levy on bank deposits in a new bailout plan

Cypriots are finding it increasingly difficult to perform everyday financial transactions as cash and credit dries up.

“We didn’t discuss a [deposit] haircut and we are not reverting to it,” Cyprus’ parliament speaker Yiannakis Omirou told reporters, in remarks quoted by Reuters.

Yiannakis Omirou was speaking after an emergency meeting between politicians and President Nicos Anastasiades.

It is not yet clear if the new plan will be ready to be put to a parliamentary vote on Thursday.

The deputy leader of the ruling Democratic Rally party, Averof Neophytou, said party leaders had unanimously agreed to create a “solidarity fund” with state assets, which would be used for an emergency bond issue, Reuters reported.

That plan was confirmed by government spokesman Christos Stylianides.

But one senior government MP, who did not want to be named because he said discussions were not over, said the bank levy would remain in some form. Without it, the MP said, Cyprus could not raise all the money it needed.

The previous proposals had included a levy on deposits between 20,000 and 100,000 euros, which had outraged many Cypriots.

There has been much speculation that the new Cypriot plan could include Russian help, as Russia has multi-billion dollar investments in Cyprus.

Russians, including wealthy tycoons, hold between a third and half of all Cypriot bank deposits.

Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev has poured scorn on the eurozone’s bailout plan for Cyprus, accusing EU leaders of behaving “like a bull in a china shop”.

Dmitry Medvedev told European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Moscow on Thursday that all interested parties, including Russia, should be included in a deal for Cyprus.

The Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris is in Moscow for a second day to negotiate assistance.

Analysts say Russia may provide more funding in return for interests in Cyprus’ offshore energy fields.

The country’s two biggest banks, Bank of Cyprus and Laiki, are believed to be reliant on the ECB’s Emergency Liquidity Assistance, provided via the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The ECB’s governing council can halt ELA if it believes the banks receiving it are no longer solvent, the Financial Times newspaper reports.

The banking sector dominates Cyprus’ economy and if a viable rescue is not organized soon the island state risks having to abandon the euro.

Cypriot banks were among the bondholders who had to take a big “haircut” in the second massive bailout for Greece.

Since 2008 the eurozone has been badly bruised by the massive bailouts provided for Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Portugal. There is a widespread reluctance to commit more EU taxpayers’ money to ailing banks in southern Europe.

Cyprus is a resilient nation and the banks are still giving out cash through machines – although with limits, and some are running low.

Some businesses are now refusing credit card payments.

Barack Obama meets Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on a historical visit to West Bank

President Barack Obama has met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during a historical visit to the West Bank.

Barack Obama has said that the US is “deeply committed” to creating a sovereign state of Palestine.

Speaking after talks with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, Barack Obama said Israeli settlement activity was not “appropriate for peace”.

US Secretary of State John Kerry would, the president added, devote time and energy trying to bring the two sides closer.

Mahmoud Abbas said the two men had held “good and useful” talks in Ramallah.

However, Palestinian expectations of Barack Obama’s visit have been low, analysts say.

On his first visit to Israel as US president on Wednesday, Barack Obama vowed strong support for the country.

At talks on Wednesday, Barack Obama and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict

Speaking in Jerusalem, President Barack Obama said a central element of securing a lasting peace in the Middle East “must be a strong and secure Jewish state where its security concerns are met, alongside a sovereign and independent Palestinian state”.

Two rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Thursday morning, Israeli officials say, but there were no reports of anyone being hurt. A further two rockets fired from Gaza reportedly fell inside Gaza itself.

Mahmoud Abbas condemned “violence against civilians, whatever its source, including the firing of rockets”, according to a Palestinian spokesperson.

Kim Kardashian claims she really did love Kris Humphries as she sits through divorce deposition

Kris Humphries claimed Kim Kardashian only married him for publicity.

However, Kim Kardashian, 32, hit back at her estranged husband’s protestations as she sat through a secret 9-hour divorce deposition at her lawyer’s office on Tuesday.

Insisting she didn’t tie the knot with Kris Humphries to boost ratings for her reality show, Kim Kardashian maintained she “really did love” the basketball player when he popped the question.

According to TMZ, Kim Kardashian “testified under oath” that her intentions were genuine when she accepted Kris Humphries’ marriage proposal, despite the union only going on to last for 72 days.

Accompanied by her lawyer Laura Wasser, Kim Kardashian affirmed that the success of her reality show “played no part in her decision to tie the knot”.

Lee Hutton, the lawyer representing Kris Humphries throughout the divorce proceedings, was probing for evidence to prove that Kim Kardashian married the sports star to boost ratings and consequently “defrauded” him.

While Kris Humphries is hoping for an annulment – rather than a divorce – based on the count of fraud, sources have told TMZ the lengthy deposition “didn’t help his case”.

Kris Humphries didn’t turn up for the hearing, and Lee Hutton is said to have “not asked much at all about the reality show and whether it was staged”, despite previously threatening to “blow the lid off” the alleged fraud.

Kim Kardashian filed for divorce on October 31, 2011, citing irreconcilable differences after just 72 days of marriage.

The case will finally come to trial on May 6, nineteen months after the reality star originally filed for divorce, with Kris Humphries alleging that the entire nuptials were a fraud and that Kim Kardashian only married him for the sake of her reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

The court case gives Kim Kardashian a chance to obtain her divorce before the birth of her first child with rapper boyfriend Kanye West, which is due in July.

Christina Aguilera Weight Loss Showed Off at The Voice Season 4 Premiere

Christina Aguilera showed off a significant weight loss in a little black and white dress as she arrived for NBC’s The Voice Season 4 premiere at TCL Chinese Theatre on Wednesday night.

Christina Aguilera’s legs looked more toned, and she accentuated her smaller waistline by cinching the attire in around the middle with a studded black belt.

The 32 year-old singer also pared back on her usual overload of accessories, heavy make-up and fake tan, going for a more natural look.

While she still wore a thick application of bronzer on her legs, Christina Aguilera opted for neutral tones on her visage and had her long blonde hair out in a tousled wavy style.

Boosting her height with a pair of platform black stilettos, Christina Aguilera wore no other accessories.

YouTube passes one billion monthly users

YouTube has proudly announced it has passed one billion regular users on a monthly basis.

Announcing the milestone on its blog, the video sharing site owned by Google said a recent growth in smartphones had helped boost the numbers visiting the site every month.

YouTube’s popularity provides Google with a lucrative channel through which to sell advertising, alongside its core search business.

YouTube was launched in 2005 and bought by Google in 2006.

Google paid $1.76 billion for YouTube, which at the time had an estimated 30-40 million users worldwide.

With one billion monthly users, it poses a challenge to Facebook as the internet’s largest social network. Facebook reached a billion users in October 2012.

“Nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube,” the company said in its statement.

YouTube was keen to stress the business potential of such a large audience.

“Tens of thousands of partners have created channels that have found and built businesses for passionate, engaged audiences. Advertisers have taken notice,” it said, saying that the top 100 brands listed by trade magazine Advertising Age were now running campaigns on YouTube.

YouTube was launched in California by three former PayPal employees.

The first video uploaded was by co-founder Jawed Karim and titled Me at the Zoo.

Canadian house on sale for Bitcoins

Canadian entrepreneur Taylor More is hoping to be the first person to sell his house for virtual currency Bitcoins.

Taylor More listed his two-bedroom Alberta bungalow, asking 405,000 Canadian dollars ($395,000) – or the equivalent in Bitcoins.

The man says the first reaction of his family was that of a shock.

Bitcoins are now a widely used alternative payments system and one Bitcoin is currently worth about $59.

“Bitcoins are really hard to get your hands on if you want to get them in large quantities,” said Taylor More.

“I have a couple projects that I want to get started, and they will take a lot of Bitcoins.”

Taylor More did not get into detail on his new venture, only saying that it should “get Bitcoins more mainstream”.

Canadian entrepreneur Taylor More is hoping to be the first person to sell his house for virtual currency Bitcoins

Unlike other currencies, Bitcoins are not issued by a central bank or other centralized authority.

Bitcoins first appeared in 2009 and are closely linked to the global network of computers which supports the currency and its users.

People generate or “mine” Bitcoins by participating in that network – for instance, by solving a complicated mathematical problem using their computer.

A growing number of web stores and online firms accept Bitcoins as payment.

Bitcoins can be exchanged for “real” money, and they can be used to make transactions that are difficult to trace, offering privacy to their users.

The currency has been adopted by Wikileaks and other sites to receive donations.

“It’s an instant form of payment, and there’s very low cost transfer fees,” said Taylor More.

“When you send money internationally it takes a week or more to do and costs hundreds of dollars, so I see this as something we’ve needed, an online virtual currency to make payments fast and easy.”

The use of Bitcoins has been slowly spilling from the online into the physical world – for example, it is now possible to use the currency to buy pizza.

South Korea hacked from Chinese IP address

South Korean officials have announced that the cyber-attack on the country’s banks and broadcasters came from an internet address in China.

However, the identity of those behind the cyber attack cannot be confirmed.

The telecoms regulator said hackers used a Chinese address to plant a malicious code that hit networks at six organizations on Wednesday.

Officials said they were continuing to investigate the origins of the attack.

North Korea has been blamed for previous attacks in 2009 and 2011.

“Unidentified hackers used a Chinese IP address to contact servers of the six affected organizations and plant the malware which attacked their computers,” said Park Jae-moon of South Korea’s communications regulator.

“At this stage, we’re still making our best efforts to trace the origin of attacks, keeping all kinds of possibilities open,” he said.

Officials stressed that the IP address did not reveal who was behind the attack, as hackers can route their attacks through addresses in other countries to obscure their identities.

However, the discovery has strengthened speculation that North Korea was behind the attack.

South Korean officials have announced that the cyber-attack on the country’s banks and broadcasters came from an internet address in China
South Korean officials have announced that the cyber-attack on the country’s banks and broadcasters came from an internet address in China

Intelligence experts believe that North Korea routinely uses Chinese computer addresses to hide its cyber-attacks.

A taskforce is being formed to analyze the virus and stop further attacks, and free computer vaccines have been handed out to South Korean companies.

Korea’s Communications Commission (KCC) said that the attacks on all six organizations appeared to come from a single entity.

The networks had been attacked by malicious codes, rather than distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks as initially suspected.

Following Wednesday’s attack, the KCC raised its cyber-attack alert levels to “caution,” the third highest out of five levels, news agency Yonhap reported.

Around 32,000 computers were affected by the incident, and some services at Shinhan bank, including internet banking and ATM machines, were disrupted.

However, so far no damage had been detected in public institutions and infrastructure, the KCC was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

The incident comes with tensions between the two Koreas high.

North Korea has stepped up rhetoric in recent days in response to fresh UN sanctions over its nuclear test in February and joint annual military drills between the US and South Korea, which it bitterly opposes.

On March 15, North Korea’s KCNA news agency also accused the US and its allies of “intensive and persistent” hacking attacks on its internet servers.

The Game denies romance with Khloe Kardashian

Rapper The Game has denied recent reports of a romance with married reality star Khloe Kardashian.

Life & Style magazine shows a picture of Khloe Kardashian jumping into The Game’s arms in LA’s Runyon Canyon Park last month.

The Game, real name Jayceon Terrell Taylor, told TMZ that Khloe Kardashian and her brother Rob were at the famous hiking spot to take part in his 60 Days of Fitness programme.

“The pictures that they see of us out together are because she is a part of my 60DaysofFitness team,” the 33 year-old rapper told TMZ.

“Khloe is my friend,” The Game added.

“She is like a sister. We have never and will never be sleeping together. Lamar [Odom] is my homie and her husband and I wish people wouldn’t spread such false rumors.”

Khloe Kardashian has been dogged by recent reports that her three year marriage to Lamar Odom is failing.

On Wednesday, the reality star took to her Twitter page seemingly to address the gossip.

“Wow! How disgusting are some people,” Khloe Kardashian wrote.

“Leave my family alone! Stop spreading such trash!!!”

Life & Style magazine claimed Khloe Kardashian was “flirting up a storm” with The Game during the hike.

“Her jumping on The Game seemed like it was natural,” a fellow hiker told the publication.

“She was really happy and they seemed to be really friendly.”

The insider added that Khloe Kardashian is so fed up with her marriage, she has been exerting a new independent streak.

“Everybody thinks Khloe is a victim in her marriage, but she isn’t anymore,” the source said.

“She’s finally ready to not let Lamar have all the power.”

The Game is reported to be dating long term girlfriend Tiffney Cambridge despite the pair calling off their wedding last year.

According to Life & Style magazine, Lamar Odom “freaked” when he saw Khloe Kardashian was “hanging out with The Game”.

An insider told the publication: “Lamar stepped up to the plate and is finally working on their marriage and rekindling the flame.”

Lamar Odom has recently been showering Khloe Kardashian with gifts and taking her out to restaurants for romantic dinners, reports the magazine.

“Lamar has always loved a woman who is independent and speaks her mind, so when Khloe became so insecure and dependent on him, it was a huge turn off,” the insider added.

“Now she’s hotter than ever and really making Lamar work for it, so he’s turned up his game. Things are looking up for the two of them again.”

Sanjay Dutt sent back to jail for 1993 Mumbai blasts

0

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt must return to prison for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, India’s Supreme Court has ruled today.

Sanjay Dutt has been on bail since 2007 when he appealed against his original sentence of 6 years. On Thursday, the Supreme Court reduced it to 5 years.

The actor was convicted in 2006 of buying weapons from bombers who attacked Mumbai. He spent 18 months in jail.

The serial bombings killed 257 people and wounded 713 others.

In 2006, a special anti-terror court had convicted 100 people for the blasts – 12 of the convicts were given death penalty and 20 others were given life sentence.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Yakub Memon, one of the main convicts, while death sentences of 10 others were commuted to life.

The judges also ordered Sanjay Dutt to surrender in four weeks.

The son of a Hindu father and Muslim mother, Sanjay Dutt said the weapons were necessary in order to defend his family during the Hindu-Muslim rioting of 1993 which had followed the destruction by Hindu zealots of the Babri mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya.

The Mumbai blasts were allegedly carried out by the city’s Muslim-dominated underworld in retaliation for the riots, in which most of those killed were Muslims.

Sanjay Dutt, one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, is hugely popular for his role of a loveable gangster in Munna Bhai movies.

Lindsey Vonn channels Sharon Stone’s leg-crossing scene for ESPN magazine

0

In a recently unearthed edition of ESPN magazine, Lindsey Vonn displays her long legs in a very short and tight dress as she channels one of Sharon Stone’s sexiest character yet, Catherine Tramell, from the R rated film Basic Instinct.

Baring a remarkable likeness to the actress, Lindsey Vonn, 28, dons the figure-hugging white polo neck dress, wears her blonde locks in a high updo and has smouldering make-up applied.

The Olympic skier also sits in a swivel chair to recreate the famous “leg-crossing” interrogation scene in the movie.

In an accompanying behind-the-scenes clip, Lindsey Vonn introduces herself as Sharon Stone.

“Hey this is Lindsey Vonn and we are in Vail, Colorado and we are shooting a scene from Basic Instinct and I am Sharon Stone,” she says.

Lindsey Vonn also explains how she came to channel the famous character.

“I have a lot of favorite movies and one of my favorites is Gladiator, but that would probably be a little hard to reenact or recreate,” she says.

In the interview she also refers to her now ex-husband, Thomas Vonn.

“In the last couple of photo shoots, people said that I looked like Sharon Stone. So my husband and I thought what are some Sharon Stone movies? And Basic Instinct came up. And I don’t know, it just kinda seemed like it would work and here I am,” Lindsey Vonn explains.

Once she finally gets into character and is in front of the lens, Lindsey Vonn admits that she does in fact feel and look like Sharon Stone’s character Catherine Tramell.

“I have to admit, when I put on all this make-up, and my hair is all Eighties-style and I put on the white dress, I do look like Sharon Stone,” the sportswoman says.

The raunchy clip and cover was recently unearthed after Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn confirmed that they were dating on Monday.

Australia issues apology to people affected by forced adoption policy

Australian PM Julia Gillard has issued an apology to people affected by the country’s forced adoption policy between the 1950s and 1970s.

Tens of thousands of babies of unmarried, mostly teenage mothers, were thought to have been taken by the state and given to childless married couples.

Many women said they were coerced into signing away their children.

Speaking in front of hundreds of the victims, PM Julia Gillard said the “shameful” policy had created “a legacy of pain”.

“Today, this Parliament, on behalf of the Australian people, takes responsibility and apologizes for the policies and practices that forced the separation of mothers from their babies which created a lifelong legacy of pain and suffering,” Julia Gillard said at Parliament House in the capital Canberra.

“We deplore the shameful practices that denied you, the mothers, your fundamental rights and responsibilities to love and care for your children.”

Julia Gillard said mothers had been denied knowledge of their rights, which meant they could not provide informed consent.

“You were given false assurances, you were forced to endure the coercion and brutality of practices that were unethical, dishonest and in many cases illegal,” the prime minister said.

Many people in the crowd broke down in tears during her speech, which was greeted with applause.

Julia Gillard also announced the Australian government would provide A$5 million funding to improve access to specialist support, records tracing and mental health care for those affected by forced adoption.

Last February, a Senate committee called for the national apology after investigating the impact of the policy.

The report was based on submissions from hundreds of women.

Many said they gave up their children because of stigma attached to unmarried motherhood at the time.

Some said they were drugged, while others said their signatures were forged.

Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Chinese Girl portrait nears £1 million mark at London auction

Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Chinese Girl portrait, thought to be the world’s most reproduced painting, has fetched £982,050 ($1,570,000) at Bonhams auction in London.

The sum, which includes a 12% buyer’s premium, was around twice what had been predicted by auction house Bonhams.

It was thought the portrait of a young Chinese girl with green-hued skin and ruby lips would fetch up to £500,000 ($800,000).

It was bought by British businessman and jeweller Laurence Graff and will go on public display in South Africa.

According to a Bonhams representative, the Chinese Girl will be exhibited, alongside the rest of the diamond retailer’s art collection, at the Delaire Graff Estate, near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

The sale fetched more than double the highest price – £384,000 – previously raised at auction by a Tretchikoff work.

Vladimir Tretchikoff, who grew up in Russia and Shanghai, eventually settled in South Africa in 1946 and completed the Chinese Girl in Cape Town in 1953.

His model was Monika Sing-Lee, then 17, whom he spotted working at her uncle’s launderette in Sea Point, Cape Town.

In his 1973 memoir Pigeon’s Luck, Vladimir Tretchikoff said he had put his “heart and soul” into a painting he hoped had “caught the essence of Chinese womanhood”.

The Chinese Girl’s popularity led to Vladimir Tretchikoff, who died in 2006, being labeled the “king of kitsch” – though his foundation describes him as “the people’s painter”.

Web piracy does not harm legitimate music sales

Music web piracy does not harm legitimate sales, a new report published by the European Commission Joint Research Committee claims.

The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies examined the online habits of 16,000 Europeans.

They also found that freely streamed music provided a small boost to sales figures.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said the research was “flawed and misleading”.

“It seems that the majority of the music that is consumed illegally by the individuals in our sample would not have been purchased if illegal downloading websites were not available to them,” wrote the researchers in their report, Digital Music Consumption on the Internet: Evidence from Clickstream Data.

“Although there is trespassing of private property rights (copyrights), there is unlikely to be much harm done on digital music revenues,” they added.

The team analyzed data over the course of one year.

They also found that music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora gave a small boost to music sales.

“According to our results, a 10% increase in clicks on legal streaming websites lead to up to a 0.7% increase in clicks on legal digital purchases websites,” claimed the report.

However, the international music industry body the IFPI was highly critical of the research.

“The findings seem disconnected from commercial reality,” it said in a statement.

“If a large proportion of illegal downloaders do not buy any music (and yet consume, in some cases, large amounts of it), it cannot be logical that illegal behavior stimulates legal download sales and inflicts no harm.”

Is Chelsea Clinton pregnant? Former First Daughter sports fuller figure at Sheryl Sandberg’s event

Chelsea Clinton seems to have put away her slim-fitting dresses as she sported a rather fuller figure when she joined Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg at an event to promote her book in New York last week, wearing a baggy red dress.

Chelsea Clinton, 33, an NBC News special correspondent and activist, has made it no secret that she wants children with her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, 35, saying: “Hopefully…God willing.”

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky have just splashed out $10.5 million on a sprawling four-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s Flatiron district, with more than enough room for a family.

A source has revealed that the former first daughter had also been absent from her daily spinning sessions at New York’s Soul Cycle, saying: “I haven’t seen her for about the past six weeks.

“It’s odd because she is usually a near daily fixture there, but she’s been scarce lately.”

Last year, her mother, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 65, confessed to Harper’s Bazaar that she was desperate to become a grandmother, saying: “Well, no pressure, because I don’t want to be one of those kinds of mothers, But obviously, someday, I’d love it.”

In 2011, when former US President Bill Clinton was asked what he wanted to accomplish in the next decade while at high-flyers retreat Davos in Switzerland, he said: “I would like to have a happy wife, and she won’t be unless she’s a grandmother. It’s something she wants more than she wanted to be president.”

When interviewed by Vogue last year, Chelsea Clinton said she wanted to start a family in a “couple of years”, admitting: “It’s certainly something that Marc and I talk a lot about. I always knew I was the center of my parents’ lives when I was growing up. And I am determined that our children feel the same way.

“Marc and I are both working really hard right now, but I think in a couple of years, hopefully… literally, God willing.

“And I hope my mom can wait that long.”

Even though their marriage was previously rumored to be in trouble, Marc Mezvinsky – who married Chelsea Clinton in July 2010 in front of 400 friends in Rhinebeck, New York – called her the “ying to (his) yang”.

The National Enquirer today reported that Chelsea Clinton – who is described as having “a heart of gold” – and Marc Mezvinsky have even been thinking of adopting a baby from Africa.

He was on probation at the time following another drink driving incident last March and was ordered to undertake an 18-month alcohol treatment programme.

After missing his original court date last month in Los Angeles, where his attorney stated his plea was “not guilty”, Bobby Brown was ordered to attend three Alcohol Anonymous (AA) meetings per week until his hearing on Wednesday.

Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston divorced in 2007 after 15 years of marriage, which Whitney previously described as “stormy” and drug-filled.

Author James Herbert dies aged 69

British horror author James Herbert, best known for classic The Rats, has died aged 69.

James Herbert’s publisher, Pan Macmillan, confirmed that the best-selling author died at his home in Sussex, UK, this morning. No cause of death was given.

Jeremy Trevathan, the author’s editor for 10 years, described him as “one of the keystone authors in a genre that had its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s”.

James Herbert is survived by his wife, Eileen, whom he married in 1967, and their three daughters Kerry, Emma and Casey.

His first novel, The Rats, depicted London overrun by mutant flesh-eating rodents and sold 100,000 copies within two weeks of being published in 1974.

Since then, James Herbert has published 23 novels in more than 30 languages, selling 54 million copies worldwide. His latest book, Ash, was published last week.

James Herbert was appointed an OBE by the Queen in 2010 – the same year he was made Grand Master of Horror by the World of Horror Convention.

Jeremy Trevathan described James Herbert as “one of the giants of popular fiction in the 20th Century”.

“It’s a true testament to his writing and his enduring creativity that his books continued to be huge bestsellers right up until his death.

“He has the rare distinction that his novels were considered classics of the genre within his lifetime,” he added.

Born in London’s East End on 8 April 1943, James Herbert won a scholarship to St Aloysius Grammar School in Highgate at the age of 10.

After a college course in graphic design, he went on to work at an advertising agency.

James Herbert started his first novel, The Rats, at the age of 28 and completed it within 10 months. He submitted the manuscript to six publishers, three of whom replied.

Of those, two rejected the novel and one accepted it.

The Rats was one of four James Herbert novels made into films, along with The Survivor, Fluke and Haunted.

James Herbert’s novel The Secret Of Crickley Hall was adapted for television and broadcast on BBC One in December, while The Magic Cottage was dramatized for BBC Radio 4.

Volkswagen to recall nearly 400,000 cars in China

Volkswagen has decided to recall 384,181 cars in China to replace a part of their gearboxes, its largest recall in the country to date.

Last week, Chinese state television showed Volkswagen consumers reporting sudden acceleration and loss of power.

Volkswagen said the direct-shift gearboxes could cause a power interruption, but drivers could remain in control and stop.

China is the biggest market for Volkswagen.

The recall, which starts on April 2, includes the Passat, Bora, Touran and Golf models amongst others, the company confirmed.

Volkswagen currently has two production joint ventures with China’s SAIC Motor and FAW Group.

The German carmaker sold 2.8 million cars in China in 2012, and said it planned to increase production to 4 million vehicles in the country in the next 5 years.

Balshoi Ballet “is just a giant brothel for oligarchs”, claims former soloist Anastasia Volochkova

Anastasia Volochkova, a Bolshoi former soloist, claimed female dancers at the famous Russian ballet theatre were forced to sleep with wealthy patrons.

Anastasia Volochkova accused the Balshoi Ballet’s general director of turning the company “into a giant brothel”.

Outspoken Anastasia Volochkova, who has dabbled in TV talent and talk shows, was fired from the Bolshoi in 2003 for being too heavy.

General director Anatoly Iksanov dismissed the claims as “ravings”.

Anastasia Volochkova made the allegations during an interview on a television talk show in Russia on Sunday, later repeating them in a radio interview with Russian News Service.

“It mainly happened with the corps du ballet but also with the soloists,” she said.

“Ten years ago, when I was dancing at the theatre, I repeatedly received such propositions to share the beds of oligarchs.

“The girls were forced to go along to grand dinners and given advance warning that afterwards they would be expected to go to bed and have sex,” she alleged.

“When the girls asked: <<What happens if we refuse?>>, they were told that they would not go on tour or even perform at the Bolshoi theatre. Can you imagine?”

The allegations were put to Anatoly Iksanov during a news conference at the theatre on Tuesday, to which he responded: “I don’t comment on dirt and ravings.”

It is the latest in a series of controversial events surrounding the world famous Russian theatre, which has become notorious for infighting and rivalry.

One of its top dancers, Pavel Dmitrichenko, is facing trial for allegedly ordering an acid attack on the ballet’s artistic director Sergei Filin in January.

Sergei Filin’s eyesight was damaged and he received severe burns to his face when sulphuric acid was thrown in his face outside his home in central Moscow.

More than 300 staff at the theatre last week signed an open letter to President Vladimir Putin saying that they believed Pavel Dmitrichenko was not capable of ordering such a crime and suggesting he had been pressured into making a confession.

Anastasia Volochkova was fired from the Bolshoi in 2003 with Anatoly Iksanov saying she was too tall and heavy for male partners to lift.

The former soloist eventually won a legal claim against the ballet theatre, although her career never really recovered.

Anastasia Volochkova has since dabbled in opposition politics and appeared on TV talent shows, while her private life has frequently appeared in the pages of Russian gossip magazines.

Cyprus banks to remain closed until March 26

Cyprus officials have announced the country’s banks, which were closed to prevent mass withdrawals, will remain shut until at least Tuesday, March 26th.

The Cypriot government began an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss alternatives to the EU-IMF bailout deal rejected by parliament on Tuesday.

Reports say the cabinet is considering imposing capital controls when banks are reopened.

Meanwhile, Cyprus’ finance minister is in Moscow to seek help from Russia.

Russia holds multi-billion dollar investments in Cyprus.

Finance Minister Michalis Sarris said after talks with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov: “There were no offers, nothing concrete.”

Talks are expected to continue in Moscow on Thursday.

The banks will remain shut on Thursday and Friday this week and Monday March 25 is a scheduled bank holiday. The stock exchange also remains closed.

Germany has said banks in Cyprus may never reopen if a bailout is not agreed.

Earlier, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades met party leaders and the central bank governor in Nicosia to hammer out a Plan B, after a one-off tax on savings failed to get the support of any MPs.

Nicos Anastasiades has also been talking to the European Union, European Central Bank and IMF.

Bank mergers, a bond issue and more Russian funding have all been mentioned as ways to help the country out of the crisis.

The establishment of a “bad bank” which would take on risky assets held by Cypriot banks has also been mentioned by officials.

Cyprus’ banks are still giving out cash through machines – although with limits, and some are running low.

Some businesses are now refusing credit card payments.

On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she regretted but respected the Cypriot vote.

Angela Merkel said the eurozone had a duty to find a solution for Cyprus, but added that the country’s current banking system was “not sustainable”.

Cyprus’ banks were left exposed following the debt crisis in Greece and there are fears Cyprus could go bankrupt if they fail.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned Cyprus that its banks might never be able to reopen if it rejected the bailout.

The controversial levy had been proposed as the condition for the 10 billion-euro ($13 billion) EU and IMF bailout. Cyprus was expected to raise 5.8 billion euros through the one-off tax on bank savings.

The plan was altered on Tuesday to exempt savers with less than 20,000 euros, but a 6.75% charge on deposits of 20,000-100,000 euros and a 9.9% charge for those above 100,000 euros remained.

However, parliament rejected the deal, with 36 MPs voting against it, 19 abstaining and none in favour.

Protesters outside parliament reacted with joy at the decision.

Cyprus has attracted money through its lower taxes, with Russians holding between a third and half of all Cypriot deposits.

Russian private and corporate deposits are believed to total about $30 billion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had called the bailout deal “unfair, unprofessional and dangerous”.

Analysts say Russia may provide more funding in return for interests in Cyprus’ offshore energy fields.

One offer of help has come from Cyprus’ Orthodox Church, which is a major shareholder in the third-largest domestic lender, the Hellenic Bank.

Archbishop Chrysostomos I said on Wednesday the Church was willing to mortgage its assets to invest in government bonds.

Lufthansa cancels more than 500 flights ahead tomorrow’s strike

Lufthansa has cancelled more than 500 flights in advance of a strike by workers on Thursday.

The Verdi union has called on 33,000 employees to stage a five-hour walkout in a row over wages and conditions.

Verdi is calling for a 5.2% increase in wages for employees at several Lufthansa divisions.

But the German airline is trying to cut costs in the face of soaring jet fuel prices and increased competition from Middle Eastern and low-cost airlines.

Lufthansa – Europe’s biggest by revenue – wants to freeze pay and increase the hours employees work by one hour per week.

Hamburg and Frankfurt will be the airports most affected by the action, the union said.

Lufthansa has cancelled 514 flights in total, mostly to German and European destinations, but most intercontinental flights should be unaffected, the airline said.
