Jodi Arias gives another interview from jailhouse speaking about Travis Alexander murder trial

0

Jodi Arias gave a surprise jailhouse interview just hours after a jury began deliberating her fate, speaking out about her murder trial, her many fights with her legal team and her belief that she “deserves a second chance at freedom someday”.

Jodi Arias repeated many of her claims from previous interviews, testimony on the witness stand and her statements to the jury earlier on Tuesday as she pleaded for mercy.

Her further stints of self-promotion came as the jury were unable to reach a decision on Wednesday on whether she should be sentenced to death.

The judge sent the jury back out to deliberate until 4.30 p.m. (MST). If jurors are unable to agree, then the judge will declare a mistrial for death penalty phase only and a new jury will be brought in.

Jodi Arias also provided some new information about her case and how she believed her lawyers let her down by not calling more witnesses who could have bolstered her claims that she was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Travis Alexander.

She was convicted last week of first-degree murder in the June 2008 stabbing and shooting death of her one-time lover in what prosecutors described as a cold, calculated killing carried out in a jealous rage. Jodi Arias has maintained all along it was self-defense.

The jury began deliberating Tuesday as they worked to determine whether she should live or die for her crime. If the jury opts for a life sentence, the judge will have the option of determining whether she spends the rest of her days behind bars or is eligible for release after 25 years.

Jodi Arias acknowledged it was unlikely she would ever be released, but believed she deserves a second chance.

Following her conviction last week, Jodi arias told a local TV station that she preferred the death penalty.

She said on Tuesday night that she changed her mind after a tearful meeting with family members that same day, realizing that her death would only cause them more pain.

“I felt like by asking for death, it’s like asking for assisted suicide and I didn’t want to do that to my family,” Jodi Arias said.

Jodi Arias said she fought from the beginning to keep cameras out of the courtroom to limit the media spectacle, and believes that the jury should have been sequestered. She stated flatly that she did not receive a fair trial.

“The prosecutor has accused me of wanting to be famous, which is not true,” she said.

However, Jodi Arias has sought the spotlight at every turn, providing TV interviews and even using a third-party to tweet throughout the trial.

Jodi Arias repeated her claims that she never wanted to go to trial in the first place but instead wanted to reach a deal with prosecutors on a second-degree murder count that would have carried a maximum of 22 years in prison. However, she said, “no deal was offered”.

She gave the interviews on Tuesday after the judge lifted an order barring jail officials from arranging any media requests.

The judge did not elaborate on the reason for the ruling, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office quickly began making the media arrangements that lasted late into the night.

A shackled Jodi Arias wore makeup for the interviews and showed up in a jail classroom with a comb in hand as she fixed her hair for the cameras. When pressed for details on some of her conflicting stories, she was mostly evasive, citing advice from her attorneys and possible pending appeals.

She was also asked about the conflicts she had had with her two court-appointed lawyers, Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott.

Jodi Arias said she wanted at least three people called as witnesses who could have testified to having seen bruises on her neck “when I was choked out” by Travis Alexander but she said she was rebuffed by her lawyers.

The prosecutor insisted her claims of self-defense were an exaggerated attempt to avoid being convicted.

Jodi Arias said her lawyers “felt a little betrayed” and blindsided by her post-conviction interview but that they gave their blessings for Tuesday night’s interviews, warning her to be cautious.

She said she sometimes wishes she’d never met Alexander, “just because of how ultimately everything ended and I say that for his sake and mine – not just a selfish thing”.

Jodi Arias said if the attack never occurred and she never crossed paths with the victim, she would likely now be a happily married 32-year-old with children, good finances and a successful wedding photography business.

Earlier on Tuesday, Jodi Arias told jurors she planned to use her time in prison to bring about positive changes, including donating her hair to be made into wigs for cancer victims, helping establish prison recycling programs and designing T-shirts to raise money for domestic abuse victims.

Jodi Arias became emotional as she displayed for jurors photos of her friends, boyfriends and family members, including newborn relatives she has met only from behind bars.

She asked jurors to reject the death penalty for the sake of her family.

“I’m asking you to please, please don’t do that to them. I’ve already hurt them so badly, along with so many other people,” she said.

“I want everyone’s healing to begin, and I want everyone’s pain to stop.”

Jodi Arias stabbed and slashed Travis Alexander nearly 30 times, shot in him in the forehead and slit his throat, nearly decapitating him, before leaving his body in his shower to be found by friends about five days later.

“To this day, I can hardly believe I was capable of such violence. But I know that I was,” Jodi Arias told jurors.

“And for that, I’m going to be sorry for the rest of my life.”

Her speech to jurors came a day after her attorneys asked to be removed from the case, saying the five-month trial had become a witch hunt that prompted death threats against a key witness in the penalty phase. They also argued for a mistrial. The judge denied both requests.

Travis Alexander’s family showed little emotion as Jodi Arias’ mother, father and sister looked on from the other side of the gallery and cried.

After Jodi Arias finished speaking, Judge Sherry Stephens explained to jurors that their finding would be final

The jury heard closing arguments later on Tuesday, with Jennifer Willmott citing Jodi Arias’ mental health problems and lack of a criminal record among the reasons to spare her life.

“The question now before you is: Do you kill her? Do you kill her for the one act that she did, the one horrible act, or can you see that there is a reason to let her live? Can you see that there is value in her life?” she said.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez said that despite Jodi Arias’ claims, there were no factors in the case that would warrant a sentence other than death.

He implored jurors to look at the “whole panorama” of the case, not just Jodi Arias’ statement on Tuesday, and explained how Travis Alexander’s family will live with the pain of their loss for the rest of their lives.

“They can’t forget that what happened on that afternoon, Travis Victor Alexander suffered immense physical pain,” Juan Martinez said.

“They can’t forget that.”

Kim Kardashian’s baby shower invitation is a ballerina music box playing Kanye West lullaby

Kim Kardashian’s baby shower is scheduled for June 2 and music box invitations have been already sent out for the event.

Kim Kardashian – who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Kanye West – is having a lavish bash thrown in her honor on June 2 ahead of her due date in July and gossip website TMZ has got hold of one of the unique invites.

The white music box plays a “lullaby” version of rapper Kanye West’s track Hey Mama as a plastic ballerina – which bears a resemblance to the famous beauty – dances.

The invitations have been “given with love by Kris Jenner, Shelli Azoff, Kourtney Kardashian (and) Khloe Kardashian-Odom” and guests must RSVP by May 28 – four days before the event.

The family have chosen a “Garden Chic” theme for the bash.

Kim Kardashian, 32, is reportedly set to join Kanye West on his European tour later this year after she gives birth and the TV personality admits she feels totally prepared for motherhood after taking tips from her own mother Kris Jenner.

She recently said: “My mom is a strong and ambitious career woman that despite her busy schedule and the millions of things she has going on, she still manages to put family first and continues to look out for us every day.

“Motherhood is a gift and I know after watching my mom do it, it’s not easy especially when trying to balance a career. I can’t wait to follow in her footsteps and make her proud like I am of her.”

Considering Kim’s wedding to ex-husband Kris Humphries is reported to have cost a reported $10 million, it should come as no surprise that she’s chosen to splash out on her baby shower.

No doubt the trustee camera crew from Keeping Up With The Kardashians will be on hand to document the event too.

The brunette beauty wore her hair down and sported smokey eyes, bronzed cheeks and pink lips for the occasion.

Irina Shayk wasn’t the only beauty to grace the red carpet at Robert Redford’s new film.

Jessica Chastain wowed in a dramatic purple dress, which was encrusted with beading and jewel detail.

Total face transplant performed in Poland

Polish doctors say they have performed a total face transplant on a 33-year-old man whose face was torn off in an accident with stone-cutting machinery.

Surgeons at the Oncology Center in Gliwice said the 27-hour operation was performed on May 15, just weeks after the accident.

The head of the team of doctors, Adam Maciejewski, said it was the world’s first life-saving face transplant carried out so soon after the damage.

The accident took place on April 23.

Previous transplants have taken months or years to prepare.

A computer-generated image, provided by the hospital, shows the extraordinary damage the man suffered as a result of the industrial accident.

It required surgery to reconstruct his face, jaws, palate and the bottom of his eye sockets.

But incredibly, the emergency procedure appears to have been a success.

A picture of the patient taken yesterday, six days after the surgery, showed him making a thumbs-up gesture from his hospital bed.

A Spanish farmer had the world’s first full-face transplant in March 2010.

Oscar, whose surname was not revealed to protect his privacy, had blown most of his face off with a gun in the hunting accident. He was left unable to breathe, swallow or talk properly.

Nine earlier surgical attempts to rebuild his face had failed.

He made medical history when he became the first person in the world to undergo a full facial transplant.

The 24-hour operation involved 30 surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other medical experts at the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona.

The complicated procedure included plastic surgery and microsurgery to repair blood vessels.

Oscar required speech therapy, physiotherapy and facial therapy to help him recover full movement in his facial muscles.

There have been 11 partial face transplants carried out since Isabelle Dinoire had her face repaired by French surgeons in 2005. Five have been performed in France, two in Spain and two in the U.S, one in Egypt and one in China.

There have also been two full face transplants, Oscar and a man known as Jerome in France.

Woolwich attack: Video of man who killed British soldier with a machete

0

A video tonight emerged of a man with b****ied hands, carrying knives and ranting “We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you”, after a serving soldier was ha**ed to death by two men just 200 yards from an Army barracks.

The man can be seen and heard talking to the camera. The video came as terrified eyewitnesses saw two men shot by police marksmen after the machete attack in Woolwich, south-east London.

The two men are thought to have waited around for 20 minutes until Metropolitan Police officers arrived and then tried to attack them – but were swiftly shot by armed policemen, including a woman.

They apparently shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great in Arabic), and tried to film the attack, the BBC’s political editor Nick Robinson said.

British Home Secretary Theresa May tonight called a meeting of the Government’s emergency Cobra committee in response to the machete and knife attack on the man who was wearing a Help for Heroes t-shirt.

Theresa May said she had been briefed on the killing by the head of MI5 and police later confirmed they were treating the incident as a possible terror attack.

Meanwhile PM David Cameron cancelled a meeting with French President Francois Hollande to return to London. He said Britain has faced similar terror attacks before and added: “We will never buckle in the face of it.”

Before the dramatic video of the b****ied man was obtained by ITV News, eyewitnesses said the “crazed” men in their 20s launched a ferocious attack and were “ha**ing, ch***ing and cu**ing him”.

In footage released by ITV News, a man with b****ied hands carrying a knife and a machete addresses people holding a camera, where he appears to attempt to justify the incident.

Speaking to those recording the scene he says: “I apologize that women had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same.

“You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.”

In footage obtained by The Sun, the man can also be heard saying: “You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns you think politicians are going to die?

“No it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children. So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace.”

Following his outburst, the man walks back towards where the victim is lying in the middle of the road. He then speaks to another man as they stand near to the victim.

Women are later seen bravely tending to the man lying. The footage appears to have been taken before any of the emergency services have arrived at the scene.

Later footage has also emerged from shortly after police fired at two men. One of the men can be seen lying in the road, while the second is laid on the pavement.

The footage taken after the shootings was reported to have been taken by a man who had been on a bus on his way to a job interview.

PM David Cameron said on Twitter that “the killing in Woolwich is truly shocking – I have asked the Home Secretary to chair a Cobra meeting”.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The Queen is of course concerned by the report of an attack in Woolwich earlier today. Her Majesty is being kept informed.”

The spokesman also confirmed the Queen will visit the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery at Woolwich barracks on May 31, which was planned before today’s attack.

This afternoon the area’s MP, Nick Raynsford, told BBC Radio 5 Live he believed the victim, a man aged in his 20s, was a serving soldier.

The man is believed to have been hacked to death after a car crash. The scene of the attack is just 200 yards from Woolwich Barracks.

Nick Raynsford said: “We think a serving soldier was the victim. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding the incident. We do know a number of weapons have been seized.

“They include a gun, various knives, and a machete, apparently. The police clearly had to take action in order to try and arrest these individuals.”

The Ministry of Defence said it was urgently looking at the reports that the incident involved a soldier but had no further comment.

Footage from a TV news helicopter showed a large number of weapons lying in the street following the incident. A London Ambulance Service spokesman said one man had died at the scene.

He added: “Our staff treated two others. Both men were taken to hospital, one of them is in a serious condition, the other is not.”

One witness, identified as James, said he and his partner saw two black men attack the young victim with knives, including a meat cleaver.

“They were hacking at this poor guy, literally,” he told LBC.

Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford confirmed tonight that the two attackers were shot by armed officers.

He said in a statement: “At approximately 1420 we were called to reports of an assault in John Wilson Street, Woolwich, where one man was being assaulted by two other men.

“A number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack and this included reports of a firearm.

“Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene and shortly after firearms officers arrived on the scene.

“On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead. At this early stage I am unable to provide any further information about the man who has died.

“Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They were taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries.

“I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating what has taken place today.”

Luke Huseyin, 32, who lives in a block of flats on John Wilson Street, Woolwich, close to where the incident happened said he watched two men murder a man before being shot.

He said: “I was at home and heard a big bang. I looked out of the window and saw a car had crashed.

“It was a blue Vauxhall. Then two black guys got out of the car dragging a white guy across the road towards the wall. One of the guys had a knife that looked about a foot long and a machete and the other bloke had a gun.

“They started slashing him up with the knife and hitting him in the stomach with the machete. I don’t think it took long before he was dead. There were people passing by who were screaming and running away. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“I’m still really shaken up. When he was dead, they dragged him out into the road and left him there. It was strange, they didn’t run off, they just stood there as if they were waiting for the police.

“It must have taken about 20 minutes for the police to arrive, I think it must’ve been because they were waiting for armed police.

“The police officers got out of the car and the two black men ran towards them with the gun.

“The police shot them. They fell to the ground. Then a helicopter landed. Think it must’ve been an air ambulance.

“The paramedics got out and I think they were working on the two men to try and keep them alive.

“I don’t know if they died, they were taken away in the helicopter. A blanket was put over the white guy lying in the road. I just can’t believe what I saw.”

Mother-of-four Julia Wilders, 51, said she was travelling past the scene and saw two men hacking at a man with meat cleavers.

“Graham was driving and we drove past the car which was up against a lamp post.

“There were two black guys that looked like they were trying to resuscitate a white guy on the floor. I thought there’d been an accident.

“But then I saw they were using meat cleavers to hack him up. We live just behind where it happened and once we got back we walked back to have a look and that’s when I saw one of the black guys pull out a handgun.

“My husband screamed at me to get back. I was petrified. As I was running back I saw the police pull up and the black guy was running towards the police car and they shot him.

“I didn’t see anything else, I just run back home.”

David Dixon is the headteacher of Mulgrave Primary School, which is located about 50 metres from the scene of the incident. He saw a body in the road after realizing something was happening and immediately locked down the school.

He said: “It was at the end of our road. As soon as we realized it was serious I went to see what had happened and then told staff to lock down the school and get the children inside. I spoke to police to ask what we should do.

“There seemed to be a body in the middle of the road. The traffic was backed up and the police were on the scene.”

Brussels Summit: EU leaders in drive against tax evasion

EU leaders at Brussels summit say they are committed to tackling tax evasion and will push for global action to curb banking secrecy.

The president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said there was a “strong political will” in Europe to make tax systems fairer.

He said the EU would draft tougher rules this year on banking transparency. Herman Van Rompuy was speaking after summit talks in Brussels.

A key goal is to prevent multinational firms exploiting legal loopholes.

There is widespread public anger that some big corporations have minimized their tax payments at a time of economic hardship.

Tax evasion and avoidance cost EU states 1 trillion euros ($1.3 trillion) a year – more than was spent on healthcare in 2008.

The EU is now promising action against “aggressive tax planning” – that is, the complex yet legal accounting tricks used by some companies to minimize their tax payments.

EU leaders also want global standards on exchanging bank account data. The issue will be high on the agenda of a summit of the G8 industrialized nations in Northern Ireland next month.

Herman Van Rompuy said the economic crisis had injected new momentum into the debate on fair taxation. But he insisted that the EU was not seeking tax harmonization across Europe.

“It’s a real breakthrough… I am really convinced there is a strong political will by leaders not just on the European level, but on the global level, to tackle tax fraud,” he told a news conference.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel said that EU members Austria and Luxembourg – famous for their banking secrecy – agreed on the need for tax authorities to exchange information on private income. But “they attach great importance to also holding negotiations with third countries”, she added.

Switzerland, outside the EU, is a major competitor in the market for rich bank clients. Austria and Luxembourg want to ensure that Switzerland and other low-tax jurisdictions in Europe, such as Monaco and Liechtenstein, do not have an unfair advantage.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann on Wednesday joined the call for a crackdown on tax evasion.

A European Parliament resolution on tax evasion on Tuesday urged the EU to halve the 1tn-euro annual losses by 2020, by curbing tax loopholes and havens.

The MEPs also called for a joint EU blacklist of tax havens.

The European Commission is pressing for automatic exchanges of people’s earnings data between tax authorities.

Some experts argue that business tax planning also reduces the revenue that developing country governments can collect, for example by shifting declared profits to countries where they are lightly taxed.

Politicians are keen to show voters that tax systems are fair, after a wave of unpopular budget cuts aimed at reducing deficits.

Starbucks and Amazon are among the companies that have faced tough questioning over their tax affairs recently.

And this week Apple came under fire in the US Congress over its low tax payments.

The other main theme at the Brussels talks was energy policy – especially the need to improve Europe’s energy infrastructure, develop renewables such as solar and wind power and remove barriers to competition. Much of Eastern Europe relies on Russia for gas – and in the past pricing disputes have led to supply shortages in mid-winter.

The Commission is urging EU governments to enact energy legislation that was agreed in 2011, warning that on current trends imports of gas will rise to 80% of the gas consumed in the EU by 2035.

The EU already imports 406 billion euros’ worth of oil, gas and coal annually – 3.2% of total EU economic output (GDP).

The fragmentation of Europe’s energy market makes it difficult to woo long-term investors willing to commit to multi-billion-euro infrastructure projects. The energy mix varies greatly across Europe, from nuclear-dominated France to coal-dependent Poland.

But a key goal is to connect Europe’s isolated “energy islands” – former Soviet bloc countries like Estonia and Bulgaria – to European grids and storage facilities.

The distortions in Europe’s energy market mean that Bulgarians – the EU’s poorest citizens – pay more for their electricity than consumers in the UK or Germany.

In the global economy the energy blockages threaten to put Europe at a serious disadvantage. The gas price index for EU households rose by 45% in 2005-12, compared with 3% in the US, while the figures for electricity were 22% and 8% respectively, the Commission says.

London machete attack: Man killed in Woolwich suspected terrorist incident

A man has been killed in a machete attack and his two assailants shot by police in Woolwich, south-east London, UK.

The UK’s government is reported to be treating the assault as a suspected terrorist incident and the prime minister said it was “truly shocking”.

Home Secretary Theresa May has summoned a meeting of the government’s emergency response committee Cobra.

Local MP Nick Raynsford said the dead man was a soldier at Woolwich barracks but this has not been confirmed.

Theresa May said she had been briefed by the director general of Security Service MI5, Andrew Parker, and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe on the “sickening and barbaric” attack.

“It has been confirmed to me that a man has been brutally murdered,” she said.

“Two other men were shot by armed police and they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.”

One witness, identified only as James, said two men had attacked another man, aged about 20, who was wearing a T-shirt of military charity Help for Heroes.

“These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there,” he told LBC radio.

James said after the “horrendous” attack, the two men, who were also in their 20s, stood around, waving knives and a gun, and asked people to take pictures of them “as if they wanted to be on TV or something”.

“They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road,” he said.

Another witness, named Thomas, said: “I got there minutes after it happened because you could hear gunshots from Woolwich High Street.

“Basically two men carried out an axe attack on a young army cadet walking along the street, by the looks of things the police responded and then shot them in front of the public, at the same time I couldn’t really tell if the cadet was fatally or not hurt as police were crowded around him.”

Downing Street said PM David Cameron, who was planning to stay in Paris overnight after meeting the French president, would be returning to the UK tonight.

Whitehall sources said it is “a fair supposition” that the incident was a terrorist incident but police have not commented publicly on the suggestion.

It appears the police view is that the attack may have been filmed and footage may exist.

According to senior Whitehall sources, the people carrying out the attack were heard to say Allahu Akbar (God is Great).

On Twitter, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson described the attack as a “sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence”.

Nick Raynsford, the Woolwich and Greenwich MP, said he had spoken to local police and understood a number of weapons had been seized at the scene including a gun, knives, and a machete.

Scotland Yard said the initial attack happened in John Wilson Street, the A205, at 14:20 BST.

Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford said the two attackers were then shot by armed officers.

He said: “Police were called to reports of an assault… where one man was being assaulted by two other men. A number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm.

“Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene, and shortly after firearms officers arrived on the scene.

“On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead….

“Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They have both been taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries.

“I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating the circumstances.”

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed it had been informed.

In a statement, the IPCC said: “Investigators have been deployed to the scene and to the post-incident process.”

London Ambulance Service confirmed one man had been found dead at the scene.

It said two men had been taken to hospital – one by air ambulance – and one of them was a serious condition.

David Dixon, a local head teacher, said he walked out of the school gates and saw a body lying in the road a short distance away.

He then heard gunshots and instructed staff to lock all the gates of his school.

The air ambulance landed in the playground and most of the children have now gone home, David Dixon said.

Hilaria Baldwin picked up by husband Alec during Cannes 2013 photocall

Alec Baldwin picked up wife Hilaria during a photocall for Seduced and Abandoned at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday.

Alec Baldwin, 55, was seen grinning with delight as he toted his stunning wife, who placed a protective hand on her stomach as she was hoisted into the air.

Beaming widely, Alec Baldwin certainly didn’t appear to be struggling as he lifted Hilaria, 29, who smiled somewhat indulgently at her husband’s antics.

Alec Baldwin looked as dapper as ever in a navy jacket, open-neck blue shirt and grey trousers for the photocall, teamed with smart black shoes and a pair of sunglasses.

Hilaria Baldwin, meanwhile, opted for teal silk sleeveless dress with a black waistband detail and sky-high black heels – clearly not suffering enough with her pregnancy to forgo heels for flats.

The pair’s appearance at the photocall came after they made a stunning appearance on the red carpet for the premiere of new movie Blood Ties on Monday night.

Hilaria Baldwin, who was recently named on Vanity Fair‘s list of the best dressed pregnant celebrities, tweeted ahead of her arrival to the festival that she would be missing her two dogs, saying: “It’s even harder leaving them while I’m pregnant. Their cries make me cry!”

Alec Baldwin’s HBO documentary Seduced and Abandoned – directed by his friend James Toback – was filmed during last year’s film festival and follows the actor running between yachts and hotels trying to pitch a movie he hopes to finance and make.

It also includes interviews conducted by Alec Baldwin with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese, as well as actors Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain.

Novel coronavirus kills Tunisian man

0

A Tunisian man has died of the novel coronavirus (NCoV), in what is believed to be the first such case in Africa.

Tunisia’s health ministry said the 66-year-old had visited Saudi Arabia, which is badly affected by the virus.

About 20 deaths and 41 cases have been reported worldwide since 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

NCoV is from the same family of viruses as the one that caused the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, killing about 770 people.

However, NCoV and SARS are distinct from each other, the WHO says.

It appears likely that the virus can be passed between people in close contact, it adds.

The Tunisian man, a diabetic, had been complaining of breathing problems since he returned from Saudi Arabia and he died in hospital in the coastal city of Monastir, AFP news agency reports.

Two of his children also contracted the virus, but had responded to treatment, the health ministry said, in a statement.

“These Tunisia cases haven’t changed our risk assessment, but they do show the virus is still spreading,” said WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl, AP news agency reports.

Cases have been detected in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Germany, the UK and France.

“All of the European cases have had a direct or indirect connection to the Middle East, including two cases with recent travel history from the UAE,” the WHO Update says.

Twenty-two of the 41 cases reported worldwide are in Saudi Arabia, it adds.

Out of the 20 deaths, nine of them have been in the kingdom, WHO says.

Xbox One: Microsoft may charge a fee to play pre-owned games

Microsoft faces a backlash from some gamers after it emerged the company may charge a fee to play pre-owned games on its new Xbox One console.

The move would also mean borrowing a game from a friend will require a payment to play, possibly the full price.

Microsoft has said gamers will be able to trade their used games online – but refused to give more details.

Microsoft’s director of programming, Larry Hryb, admitted there had been some “confusion” around the policy.

An official Xbox support account on Twitter had initially told fans that no fee would be needed for used games, but a later comment from Larry Hryb sought to clarify the situation.

He wrote on his blog: “While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

“Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.”

Larry Hryb added that gamers could bring their games to a friends’ house to play without paying a fee – but only if the game’s owner is signed in to the Xbox Live account with which it is registered.

If the player wanted to lend the game to that friend, a fee would be required in order to play the title on a different Xbox Live profile.

Microsoft faces a backlash from some gamers after it emerged the company may charge a fee to play pre-owned games on its new Xbox One console.
Microsoft faces a backlash from some gamers after it emerged the company may charge a fee to play pre-owned games on its new Xbox One console.

The company advises against the sharing of Xbox Live account details with other people, and only one gamer can be signed in on a single profile at any one time.

Speaking to games news website Kotaku, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, Phil Harrison, said the company would soon announce further plans for pre-owned games.

“We will have a solution – we’re not talking about it today – for you to be able to trade your previously played games online,” he said.

The move will mean Microsoft is able to gain control of what is a massively profitable market in pre-owned games across the world.

Possible models for Microsoft could include allowing gamers to relinquish their ownership of a game in order to receive discounts on new titles bought through the Xbox Live store.

This may prove popular with sports games that have yearly updates, with fans often trading in the old version to get money off the latest edition – a process that traditionally required a physical retailer that would pocket any profits on re-sales.

“This is mainly a question of control,” said Ed Barton, director of digital media at research firm Strategy Analytics.

“The margin on second-hand games is enormous, and the games industry has always been a little bit annoyed that it’s a few retailers that dominate the market for games.”

The move could have a damaging effect on shops who rely on pre-owned sales not only to turn profit in their own right, but to also spur sales of new titles.

“The retailers could quite fairly say that around 70% of the value of pre-owned games is subsequently spent on new games,” Ed Barton added.

“There’s a fair point that the trade-in business is pretty significant in driving new games sales. It remains to be seen whether that process will still continue.”

Sony, which will show off the PlayStation 4 at next month’s E3 event in Los Angeles, has remained fairly tight-lipped on their plans for dealing with pre-owned games.

Its worldwide studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, told news site Eurogamer used games would not be “blocked” on the console, but would not specify whether there would be a fee for using pre-owned titles.

Ed Barton said Sony could use the situation to gain a considerable competitive advantage over its rival.

“If Sony doesn’t follow suit, I think for a reasonable proportion of the gaming market, this will be a big plus for the PlayStation console.”

Also keeping a close eye on the pre-owned debate will be games developers and publishers, who may be able to boost their earnings through Microsoft’s plans.

Vitamin C kills multidrug-resistant TB in laboratory tests

0

Scientists have found that vitamin C can kill multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in the laboratory.

The surprise discovery may point to a new way of tackling this increasingly hard-to-treat infection, the US study authors from Yeshiva University say in Nature Communications.

An estimated 650,000 people worldwide have multidrug-resistant TB.

Studies are now needed to see if a treatment that works using the same action as vitamin C would be useful as a TB drug in humans.

In the laboratory studies, vitamin C appeared to be acting as a “reducing agent” – something that triggers the production of reactive oxygen species called free radicals. These free radicals killed off the TB, even drug resistant forms that are untreatable with conventional antibiotics such as isoniazid.

Lead investigator Dr. William Jacobs, professor of microbiology and immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, said: “We have only been able to demonstrate this in a test tube, and we don’t know if it will work in humans and in animals.

“This would be a great study to consider because we have strains of tuberculosis that we don’t have drugs for, and I know that in the laboratory we can kill those strains with vitamin C.

“It also helps that we know vitamin C is inexpensive, widely available and very safe to use. At the very least, this work shows us a new mechanism that we can exploit to attack TB.”

It might be that vitamin C could be used
alongside TB drugs. Alternatively, scientists could create new TB drugs that work by generating a big burst of free radicals.

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, has many important functions in the body, including protecting cells and keeping them healthy.

Good natural sources of the vitamin include oranges, blackcurrants and broccoli and most people get all they need from their diet.

What is drug-resistant TB?

  • TB is caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Increasingly, doctors are discovering that the drugs they normally use to treat the infection no longer work because TB has developed resistance
  • Drug resistance arises due to improper use of antibiotics – for example, when patients do not finish the full course of their medicine

Ibragim Todashev shot dead by FBI agent in Orlando while questioning over links to Tamerlan Tsarnaev

Chechen Ibragim Todashev has been shot dead by an FBI agent in Orlando, Florida, early Wednesday during questioning related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

The shooting happened just after midnight Wednesday at 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev’s apartment complex near Universal studios, FBI Special Agent Dave Couvertier confirmed.

“The agent encountered the suspect while conducting official duties,” Dave Couvertier said.

“We do not have any further details at this time. We expect to have more information later this morning.”

An FBI post-shooting incident review team has been dispatched from Washington, D.C. and is expected to arrive in Orlando within 24 hours, he said.

Former FBI assistant director John Miller, who now works for CBS News, said the FBI was trying to question Ibragim Todashev at his apartment over his ties to Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev when “something went wrong”.

The suspect reportedly attacked the agent, who then fired his weapon and killed Ibragim Todashev.

The FBI had questioned Ibragim Todashev in the past regarding his ties to 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police in a shootout following the April 15 bombings. His younger brother, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, has been charged in connection with the bombings and is being held at a prison medical center outside Boston.

Khusen Taramov, a friend of Ibragim Todashev, confirmed that he knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev and had been in contact with him via phone or Skype about a week before the bombings.

In an interview with Orlando television station WESH, he said that the two met while Ibragim Todashev was living in Boston because they were both involved in mixed martial arts and boxing.

Khusen Taramov says the FBI has been following him and Ibragim Todashev since the bombings. He said that they were both being interviewed by agents late Monday night.

He claims his friend is innocent and that he has been targeted by authorities because he is a Muslim.

“He was just a Muslim, that was his mistake, I guess,” Khusen Taramov, also a Muslim, told WESH.

Shortly before the shooting, Ibragim Todashev “had a bad feeling. He felt there’s going to be a set-up against him,” he said.

Ibragim Todashev gave him phone numbers for his mother and father late Monday just in case he got “locked up”.

“We had a feeling that a worse-case scenario, that something like [a shooting] is going to happen,” Khusn Taramiv told the television station.

In an unrelated incident, Ibragim Todashev was arrested May 5 for aggravated battery following a fight in a parking lot.

Why We Need Comprehensive Immigration Reform and What Are The Alternatives

Opportunities Await

The American Dream still fascinates people all over the world and contributes to the appeal of the United States of America as a country of opportunity and plentiful employment chances. The country is renowned as a land of prospects for new comers which has been rooted in its history, with several significant waves of immigration occurring throughout its existence; from the pilgrims on the Mayflower and the Irish fleeing famine, to German Forty-Fighters and refugees of fascism – virtually every American can trace his ancestry to another country of the ‘old continent’. During its heyday, immigration resulted in the inhabitation of certain neighborhoods by a nationality, giving rise to the well-known ‘Little Italies’ and ‘Chinatowns’ of American metropolises. While times certainly have changed, the main reasons for immigration to the U.S. have stayed the same. For many, the foremost reason is the economic opportunity, which they might not find in their home countries. Others might wish to escape the dire circumstances of homeland. In contrast, some might just seek to experience a new way of life.

Taking Chances

Applying for a green card is the only way for non U.S. citizen to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States. While it is generally open to any individual to apply for a green card, the most convenient way is to participate in the diversity immigrant visa. Professional green card lottery services, will not only take care of the bureaucratic effort, but also assist during the process and provide all the information needed. As the name suggests, the diversity lottery was created in order to diversify the annual influx of immigrants. This also means that countries can become ineligible for participation, if more than 50,000 immigrants came to the US within a time span of five years.

What are the alternatives?

This ineligibility, however, is not necessarily permanent and will be revoked as soon as immigration numbers fall below the limit, which allows the citizens of that country to apply for the visa lottery again. Nevertheless, there are other ways of attaining a green card. Applying for a green card by way of regular immigration is another possibility. Recent immigration law reform, for instance, would allow millions of still illegal immigrants to become legal residents of the U.S. Whatever the circumstances, one should keep trying and never give up, as these are central elements of the American way of life.

Kim Jong-un sends Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Beijing

Kim Jong-un has sent Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Beijing, North Korean state media has announced, amid cooling relations between the two neighbors.

Choe Ryong-hae, a top military official, flew to the Chinese capital on Wednesday, KCNA said.

The brief dispatch gave no details of the visit, which comes amid an apparent toughening of Beijing’s stance in the wake of Pyongyang’s third nuclear test.

Chinese media said Choe Ryong-hae met Wang Jiarui, a top foreign affairs official.

The visit – the duration of which remains unknown – follows weeks of high tension on the Korean peninsula.

China is North Korea’s biggest trading partner and closest ally. It has traditionally sought to maintain stability in North Korea, avoiding any crisis that could trigger the fall of the regime and propel a flow of refugees across the border.

In recent weeks, following Pyongyang’s February 12 nuclear test and amid strident rhetoric from its leaders, China has expressed frustration with North Korea, with state media openly debating the benefits of close ties.

Beijing supported expanded UN sanctions against Pyongyang after its nuclear test and some of its banks have recently suspended trading with North Korea’s Foreign Trade Bank.

Kim Jong-un has sent Choe Ryong-hae as special envoy to Beijing

It is also under domestic pressure after unidentified North Koreans seized, and subsequently released two weeks later, a 16-strong Chinese crew who had been fishing in the Yellow Sea.

The KCNA report described Choe Ryong-hae as director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People’s Army.

He has risen quickly under North Korea’s young leader – last year he was promoted to vice-marshal and given senior positions within the party’s key organizations.

Kim Jong-un inherited the North Korean leadership in December 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. The late Kim Jong-il visited China in August 2011 and his brother-in-law, Jang Song-thaek, who is thought to be a key adviser of the younger Kim Jong-un, in August 2012.

Choe Ryong-hae is thought to be the most senior North Korean official to visit China since then.

He appears to be the first top-level envoy publicly dispatched by the North Korean leadership to the region since the recent tensions, which saw multiple threats of attacks from North Korea and a show by the US of high-profile military hardware in joint exercises with the South.

Japan, meanwhile, said on Wednesday it would be open to direct talks with North Korea if it would help resolve the issue of Japanese nationals kidnapped by the communist state in the 1970s and 1980s.

The comments, from Japan’s top government spokesman, followed a visit to Pyongyang by a special envoy of Japanese leader Shinzo Abe. South Korea and the US have criticized the visit as unhelpful and said they were not consulted.

In another development, a KCNA report named a hard-line general, Kim Kyok-sik, as North Korea’s army chief. Kim Kyok-sik was previously defense minister, a lower ranked position, until earlier this month.

Kim Kyok-sik was said to be responsible for the shelling of South Korea’s border island Yeonpyeong in 2010, which killed four South Koreans.

Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran back together?

Chris Brown and his ex girlfriend Karrueche Tran engaged in a very raunchy Twitter exchange on Saturday and it appears the rumors that they are back together may very well be true.

Chris Brown, 24, was involved in a minor car accident on Tuesday in Los Angeles after he rear ended another car, and none other than Karreuche Tran, 24, was seen standing with him at the scene.

In one shot, Chris Brown is seen with a stormy look on his face as he stands to the side while the blonde female whose car he hit talks next to him on her cellphone.

The singer wore a black sweater, baggy grey sweatpants and white trainers, accessorizing with layers of gold chains around his neck.

Model Karreuche tran, meanwhile, wore ripped jeans and a blue top as she played an active role on the scene, taking pictures of the dented car with her cellphone.

The new pictures certainly add fuel to the rumors that the former couple is giving their relationship another go.

Celebrating her birthday on Saturday, Karrueche Tran made the somewhat bizarre move of posting a picture of herself with Chris Brown on her Instagram page.

Alongside the candid picture, Karrueche Tran wrote: “TBT my birthday last year. Who’s face am I gonna put my a** in this year? Lmao I’m kidding.”

And it was obviously a happy memory for Chris Brown, as he responded to her unusual Twitter gesture with the tweet: “Happy bday @karrueche.”

Karrueche Tran then sent a simple reply of her own, a heart, adding yet further fuel to rumors the pair are thinking of reuniting.

A source told Hollywood Life: “He’s been initiating contact with her, not the other way around. I wouldn’t say Karrueche and Chris are together but they are talking and kicking it.”

Karreuche Tran was left disappointed last October when Chris Brown ended their relationship to get back with his former flame Rihanna.

But just months after confirming his reconciliation with Rihanna, Chris Brown announced that they had split again during an interview with Australian radio hosts Kyle & Jackie O Show.

Chris Brown said: “The way I look at it is, I’m always going to love that person, but people have differences, and people have different wants and needs, at the end of the day she’s a young girl.”

Miranda Kerr wardrobe malfunction during shooting for her make-up range Kora Cosmetics

After years of perfectly posing for lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret it seems model Miranda Kerr accidentally reveals much more than she intended when shooting for her make-up range Kora Cosmetics.

Miranda Kerr, 30, had perhaps unwisely decided to pose on the windy shoot in Miami.

The model, who is married to Hollywood hunk Orlando Bloom, showed off her toned legs and slim body on the shoot – but all eyes were on the model’s cleavage as she rushed to finish up the photoshoot.

Speaking about her beauty brainchild, Miranda Kerr said: “KORA Organics is a reflection of my passion for living a healthy, balanced organic lifestyle that I want to share.”

Miranda Kerr set about creating her range because she was unable to find organic skincare anywhere in the beauty market.

Containing key ingredients such as lavender, aloe vera and rosehip oil, Miranda Kerr has ensured that everything is as organic as possible.

The range also includes Miranda Kerr’s secret beauty weapon: Noni.

Kim Kardashian shows off growing baby bump in bikini

As she proudly showed off her bump in a simple bikini Kim Kardashian proved she is finally at ease with her new shape.

Looking happy and healthy, her hair in braids and skin barely made up, the seven months’ pregnant reality star was a true beauty.

Kim Kardashian, 32, was soaking up the sun surrounded by her family on a recent holiday to the Greek islands.

Obviously at ease with her body in their company she sunned herself on a bed, sat beside the hottub to chat her to her sisters and took in the scenic surroundings.

Kim Kardashian certainly made the most of her break, wearing three different bikinis – in white, maroon and black.

And while her approach to dressing her bump has occasionally raised eyebrows, there was no questioning that she looked her best in the simple beachwear.

Kim Kardashian opened up about her struggles to adjust to her new shape in a recent tweet, writing: “I struggle finding things that don’t make me look heavy.”

And she has admitted that her quest to remain fashion-forward has somewhat fallen by the wayside as she now goes for comfort over style.

As she proudly showed off her bump in a simple bikini Kim Kardashian proved she is finally at ease with her new shape

Asked about her pregnancy outfit choices, Kim Kardashian told Grazia magazine: “This is how I have always dressed, and right now I’m wearing anything that fits.

“Kourtney warned me that when I got pregnant, people’s opinions would be on an all-time high and people would chime in. Now I see what she means!”

And asked if she had been able to maintain confidence about her body during her pregnancy, Kim Kardashian replied: “No.”

The reality star even admitted that she has been forced to give up her beloved high heels because her feet are too “wide and swollen” to wear them.

Kim Kardashian added: “My doctor has told me to elevate my feet – I just ordered a pair of pointy-toed flats.”

And referring to her favorite Christian Louboutin five-inch heels, Kim Kardashian admitted: “These hardly fit me anymore.

“When I flew in them the other day, I landed with one strap unbuckled, as I couldn’t get it around my ankle.”

But while Kim Kardashian has been criticized for her pregnancy style, her sister Khloe thinks she is an inspiration.

Once criticized herself for her weight, Khloe Kardashian blasted those who insult someone “growing another life inside of her” for their weight.

In a letter published on Kim Kardashian’s website, Khloe wrote: “I find it disturbing that society loves to critique a woman’s shape no matter how beautiful or happy she may be within herself.

“I cannot tolerate one more vicious attack on my sister… For anyone to ever criticize a woman who is growing another life inside of her is true scum in my eyes.”

Khloe Kardashian, 28, praised Kim – who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Kanye West – for the “magnificent” way she has handled her critics and begged her not to let them get her down.

She continued: “I commend you for not putting your head down and going into hiding like so many would.

“You live your life and you try to make the best out of a tough situation.

“I need you to know how truly magnificent you are! You may be one of the most beautiful women I have ever laid my eyes on.

“Your beauty runs deeper than just what some may see.

“I know the beauty of your soul. Please never let anyone take that from you!”

Venezuela’s toilet paper shortage ended after National Assembly backs import

Venezuela’s National Assembly has backed the country’s plans to import 39 million rolls of toilet paper, in an effort to relieve a chronic shortage.

Lawmakers voted to approve a $79 million credit for the country’s ministry of commerce, which will also be used to buy toothpaste and soap.

The products are currently in short supply in Venezuelan shops.

The oil-rich nation relies on imports, but currency controls have restricted its ability to pay for foreign goods.

President Nicolas Maduro, who won a narrow majority in April’s presidential elections, maintains that the country’s periodic shortages of basic goods are the result of a conspiracy campaign by the opposition and rich sectors of society.

Venezuela’s National Assembly has backed the country’s plans to import 39 million rolls of toilet paper, in an effort to relieve a chronic shortage

Nicolas Maduro has vowed to uphold the legacy of his late predecessor, Hugo Chavez, whose “21st-Century socialism” involved sweeping nationalization and extensive social programmes.

Analysts say that the government’s attempts to impose state control on the economy have created huge imbalances that have led to the shortages.

“Price controls, for example, act as a disincentive to local producers, forcing them to cut output,” says the survey organization Consensus Economics.

“The resulting scarcity forces up inflation, defeating the entire purpose of price controls in the first place.”

Venezuela’s inflation is the highest in Latin America and is currently running at about 25%.

The Venezuelan currency, bolivar, has been devalued repeatedly in recent years, most recently by 32% in February.

US immigration bill passes Senate panel with 13-5

The immigration bill that would offer a chance of citizenship to millions living in the US illegally has taken a stride forward in Congress.

A Senate panel voted 13-5 to back the measure, after a plan to allow people to sponsor same-s** partners for permanent legal status was withdrawn.

The full Senate will now debate the proposal next month.

The bill is widely seen as the biggest overhaul of US immigration policy in more than a quarter of a century.

But lawmakers’ last attempt at immigration reform was more recent – a bipartisan bill failed in the Senate in 2007.

After Tuesday evening’s vote, immigration activists who had crowded into the Senate judiciary committee room cheered.

In a statement, President Barack Obama congratulated the panel.

Barack Obama said the bill was “largely consistent with the principles of common sense reform I have proposed and meets the challenge of fixing our broken immigration system”.

The president added he was “hopeful” the amendment process would “lead to further improvements”.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said he would not block the measure from coming to the floor for a full debate, but did not say how he planned to vote.

Three Republicans joined all 10 Democrats on the committee in voting for the bill.

The immigration bill that would offer a chance of citizenship to millions living in the US illegally has taken a stride forward in Congress

Approval came after committee members agreed to a Republican move to ease visa restrictions on hiring skilled workers from countries such as China and India.

The Democratic chairman of the committee, Patrick Leahy, also withdrew an amendment that would have allowed people to sponsor same-sex partners, who are foreigners, for permanent legal status.

“I don’t want to be the senator who asks people to choose between the love of their life and the love of their country,” Senator Patrick Leahy said.

The bill’s supporters had asked him to remove the proposal in order to save the legislation.

“I believe in my heart of hearts that what you’re doing is the right and just thing,” Democrat Senator Richard Durbin said.

“But I believe this is the wrong moment, that this is the wrong bill.”

At the centre of the legislation is a provision that would allow the estimated 11 million people living in the US illegally to obtain “registered provisional immigrant status”, six months after the bill’s enactment if certain conditions are met.

That status is the beginning of a 13-year process that would one day allow immigrants to be eligible to apply for a green card.

The bill also includes provisions to strengthen border security along the US-Mexican border, using additional agents and drones.

The president of the powerful AFL-CIO union group, Rich Trumka, attacked the last-minute deal allowing an increase in the number visas for hi-tech specialists as “anti-worker”.

But he said organized labor would continue to support the larger bill.

In the other chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, immigration legislation is due to receive a hearing in the judiciary committee on Wednesday.

The latest push for reform follows Barack Obama’s announcement last June that the US would allow young undocumented workers who immigrated as children to apply for two-year, renewable visas.

Republicans have increasingly embraced the idea of immigration reform after a large majority of Hispanic voters supported Barack Obama in last year’s election.

Xbox One: Microsoft unveils its next-generation console which goes on sale later this year

Microsoft has unveiled its next-generation console, the Xbox One, which will go on sale later this year.

Xbox One was shown off alongside a new Kinect sensor and a redesigned gamepad.

Microsoft described the voice and gesture-controlled machine as an “all-in-one” system offering games, live TV, movies and music.

The firm’s Entertainment and Devices Division accounted for $9.6 billion worth of sales in Microsoft’s last financial year.

That only represented about 13% of its total revenue for the period – but one analyst said the importance of this launch should not be underestimated.

“Microsoft is very strong in business software and the enterprise cloud business, but its consumer businesses are facing tremendous challenges: PCs are declining rapidly and Windows Phone handsets have only a fraction of the market shares of rivals,” said Jia Wu from consultants Strategy Analytics.

“Xbox represents Microsoft’s core strategy in the consumer entertainment market, especially after it sold its Mediaroom video distribution business to Ericsson earlier this year.

“This is also the unique asset which Microsoft has that can differentiate itself from Apple, Google and several of the other large tech companies.”

Microsoft’s decision to show off its new hardware in the opening minutes of its presentation sharply contrasted with Sony’s PlayStation 4 press conference in February when the Japanese company decided not to reveal the look of its machine – a move that was mocked by some commentators.

Despite earlier speculation, Microsoft’s machine does not require an always-on internet connection and will run second-hand games – the firm said it would provide more details about this “in the coming weeks”.

The Xbox One sees Microsoft add a Blu-ray drive and Skype functionality to its console, incorporate vibrating feedback into its gamepad’s triggers, and upgrade the Kinect camera’s sensor to 1080p high definition resolution.

It said the new Kinect would be better at analyzing body movements, allowing users to more accurately control games characters and navigate other entertainment options.

“When you’re exercising, it can read your heartbeat,” claimed the firm.

New tools will also allow users to record and edit gameplay so clips can be easily uploaded to the web.

EA Sports was first to announce new titles for the machine revealing FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, NBA Live 14 and the fighting game UFC would all launch on the platform within the next 12 months using a new games engine called Ignite.

Microsoft has unveiled its next-generation console, the Xbox One, which will go on sale later this year
Microsoft has unveiled its next-generation console, the Xbox One, which will go on sale later this year

It said the new machine allowed it to carry out four times as many calculations a second as the Xbox 360 and 10 times more “animation depth and detail”.

Microsoft Studios also revealed that Forza Motorsports 5 – the latest in its own racing car franchise – would be available when the console launched.

The division added that it planned to release 15 games within the console’s first year, eight of which would be new franchises.

Activision also provided a first look at the next title in its Call of Duty series – Ghosts. It will use a new games engine to take advantage of the Xbox One’s improved graphics capabilities, offering more detailed textures for human skin and other features. The title will also be released on rival platforms.

French publisher Ubisoft was not part of the launch, but took the opportunity to announce that two games in development – Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – would be available for the Xbox One before the end of 2013.

The company’s chief executive, Yves Guillemot, said he was excited by the opportunities offered by the machine’s improved specifications.

“We believe it will reinvigorate the industry,” he said.

“There’s a huge step up in graphics and there’s a big step up in terms of memory as well.

“It will take time to take full advantage of the machines because we’ll have to learn how to best optimize the technology – but even from the beginning you will see a huge difference between a game on the two different generations.”

Much of the presentation was dedicated to the console’s non-gaming features including its ability to make video calls; trigger live TV and online movies by voice command; and run several programs simultaneously without any apparent drop-off in performance.

Time was also given to promote an upcoming live-action television series based on Microsoft’s Halo games franchise which movie director Steven Spielberg is working on. The firm said tie-in interactive content would be offered exclusively to the Xbox One.

“Where Nintendo’s approach to next-gen gaming seems to ignore the need to share time with television and other forms of entertainment, and Sony’s approach seems willing to share the space, Microsoft’s vision is to so blur the line between different forms of entertainment that switching from game to television or movie watching will be as simply as flipping between television channels,” said Brian Crecente, news editor at games site Polygon.

“More importantly, it is lining up to make its system the one through which all entertainment happens. If it manages to pull it off, the Xbox One could become the one jumping off point for all forms of entertainment.”

News of a five-year deal with the US’s National Football League – which will allow sports fans to call up statistics, video replays and information about what live events mean for their fantasy teams – may also appeal to Microsoft’s domestic audience.

However, it did not discuss whether it was pursuing similar tie-ups for consumers overseas.

Microsoft is planning to launch its new console at a time when many video games makers are trying to reduce costs.

Electronic Arts, Square Enix and Activision Blizzard are among firms which have announced layoffs over the past couple of months.

But the updated machines may put the companies under fresh strain.

Games engine developer Epic has warned that if studios want to take full advantage of the advances in graphics power that will be available, then their design costs could be double what they were when the Xbox 360 and PS3 launched.

“The additional rendering capabilities of these consoles will demand larger budgets for the marquee high-end games,” said Lewis Ward, video games analyst at tech research firm IDC.

“That creates a risky proposition for developers.

“But the costs are going to be mitigated to an extent – studios have said it will be easier to make games on next-gen platforms because they’re going to be closer to the development environments that are common on the PC side.”

Lewis Ward was referring to the fact that Microsoft has decided to power its machine with an eight-core x86-based CPU (central processing unit) made by AMD rather than continue with IBM’s PowerPC technology. The move means its console will run off a chip that is similar to those found in most PCs.

Sony has also opted to switch from its proprietary Cell processor tech to the x86 architecture meaning, in theory, it should be easier to port a title across different platforms.

However, the move means neither of the two new consoles will be backwards compatible with the former generation’s catalogue of games.

Both Microsoft and Sony plan follow-up “keynote” announcements at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles on June 10.

Nintendo launched its next-generation console, the Wii U, last year and has said it will not host a major press conference at the event.

Dominique Venner: Suicide inside Notre-Dame de Paris

French police says a 78-year-old man, named as Dominique Venner, has killed himself inside the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, causing its evacuation.

The man pulled out a shot-gun and shot himself through the mouth beside the main altar shortly after 16:00.

He has been named as Dominique Venner, an award-winning far-right historian.

Dominique Venner had recently been involved in the campaign against the government’s decision to legalize same s** marriage.

On Saturday, President Francois Hollande signed the bill into law.

Police said Dominique Venner had made no statement before killing himself, although a note was found next to his body. They did not disclose its contents.

Earlier on Tuesday, he had written on his blog a damning critique of the same-sex marriage bill.

“New spectacular and symbolic actions are needed to wake up the sleep walkers and shake the anaesthetized consciousness,” he wrote.

“We are entering a time when acts must follow words.”

Dominique Venner is also a former member of the Secret Army Organization (OAS), which opposed Algerian independence in the early 1960s and tried to assassinate Charles De Gaulle.

Notre-Dame is the most visited landmark in France, attracting more than 13 million visitors each year, but security is relatively relaxed.

It would not be difficult to conceal a weapon in a shoulder bag.

The cathedral is celebrating its 850th year, and at the time of Dominique Venner’s death, it would have been busy.

Police said the evacuation began immediately, that there were no further problems, and that the cathedral for the moment remained closed.

“It’s unfortunate, it’s dramatic, it’s shocking,” the rector of Notre-Dame, Monsignor Patrick Jacquin, told the Associated Press news agency.

This was the first suicide in decades at the cathedral, he said. A few people had jumped to their deaths from Notre-Dame’s twin towers, but no-one was thought to have killed themselves at the altar before, he added.

“We will pray for this man, as for so many others at their end.”

Last Thursday, a 50-year-old man with a history of mental problems killed himself with a sawn-off shotgun in front of a dozen children at a private Catholic school next to the Eiffel Tower.

Eurovision 2013: Russia calls Azerbaijan’s failure to award any points as outrageous action

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called Azerbaijan’s failure to award any points to Russia’s entry in this year’s Eurovision song contest as “outrageous”.

Sergei Lavrov said the points had been “stolen” from Russia’s Dina Garipova and “this outrageous action will not remain without a response”.

Azerbaijan says it cannot explain how it awarded no points to Russia, when Dina Garipova came second in its phone poll.

Russian voters awarded the maximum 12 points to Azerbaijan’s Farid Mammadov.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has ordered an inquiry into how its votes for Russia apparently went missing.

And the country’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, sitting next to Sergei Lavrov at a press conference in Moscow, called it a “detective story”.

Elmar Mammadyarov said records from all three of Azerbaijan’s mobile phone operators show that Azeris awarded Ukraine’s entry the most votes, followed by Russia’s.

“Where did the votes go? How did they disappear? This, of course, is a question for our public television,” he said.

Sergei Lavrov said he and his counterpart had agreed they should take a “unified course of action” once the reasons for the discrepancy became clear.

A spokesman for the European Broadcasting Union, which runs the Eurovision Song Contest, said the phone vote was not definitive. A national jury in each country also contributes 50% of the final decision, the Associated Press reports.

Despite the high-level political interest, 10 points for second place from Azerbaijan would not have made any difference to Dina Garipova’s fifth place, since she finished 17 points behind Norway.

Azerbaijan, which hosted last year’s contest, has traditionally tried to maintain good relations with Moscow though there have been tensions over energy in the past.

Meanwhile, the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has weighed in with his own accusations. Suspicious that the Belarusian singer did not receive a single point from Russia, he has claimed that the final was falsified.

Brad Pitt says he felt he was wasting his life while married to Jennifer Aniston

Brad Pitt has revealed he felt he was wasting his life on drugs while he was married to Jennifer Aniston.

In yet another blow to his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt makes it clear that before he met Angelina Jolie on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2004, his life had little meaning.

Brad Pitt, 49, who has previously admitted to ma*****na use, was married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston for seven years until 2005.

In an interview with the new issue of Esquire magazine, brad Pitt says: “For a long time I thought I did too much damage – drug damage. I was a bit of a drifter. A guy who felt he grew up in something of a vacuum and wanted to see things, wanted to be inspired. I followed that other thing. I spent years f***ing off.

“But then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change. This was about a decade ago. It was an epiphany.”

Brad Pitt also spoke about his decision to shrink his circle of friends he could spend as much time as possible with Angelina Jolie and their six children – Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, Zahara, 8, Shiloh, 6, and 4-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne – and he has never been happier.

The actor admitted: “I have very few friends. I have a handful of close friends and I have my family and I haven’t known life to be any happier.

“I’m making things. I just haven’t known life to be any happier.”

Brad Pitt fully supported Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy in February after learning she had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer because she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation.

Angelina Jolie, 37, went ahead with the operation so she can be around for her kids and Brad Pitt insists they can be no better motivation as the couple love the ‘chaos’ of their big household and the bond they all share.

He explained: “I always thought that if I wanted to do a family, I wanted to do it big. I wanted there to be chaos in the house … there’s constant chatter in our house, whether it’s giggling or screaming or crying or banging.

“I love it. I love it. I love it. I hate it when they’re gone. I hate it. Maybe it’s nice to be in a hotel room for a day – <<Oh, nice, I can finally read a paper>>. But then, by the next day, I miss that cacophony, all that life.”

Brad Pitt graces the cover of the publication, and can be seen looking as hunky as ever in a black top and wrinkled jeans, with aviator sunglasses covering his face.

His trademark long golden hair flops around his shoulder as he casually grips a camera in one hand.

Brad Pitt praised Angelina Jolie as “heroic” after she published a piece in the New York Times revealing she had undergone the double mastectomy on Tuesday.

“We set up our own little post-op recovery that became pretty fun. You make an adventure out of it,” Brad Pitt later told USA Today.

“I’m quite emotional about it, of course,” the actor said.

“She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don’t think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results.

“But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn’t have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an
empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger.”

Did Amanda Berry’s 911 dispatcher curse at her?

0

The 911 dispatcher, who spoke to Amanda Berry after she escaped from the Cleveland house of horrors, is being investigated over claims he swore at the end of her emergency call.

The operator has previously been criticized for failing to keep Amanda Berry on the line or comfort her during her desperate call for help.

But now new allegations have been made that the dispatcher calls Amanda Berry a “f****** b****” just before hanging up.

It was Amanda Berry’s 911 call that led to the discovery of fellow kidnap victims Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight after she bravely escaped the house on Seymour Avenue.

The three women had been held captive at the house for about a decade where they were repeatedly raped and tortured.

Suspect Ariel Castro, 52, remains on suicide watch in custody as he faces preliminary charges of rape and kidnapping.

Amanda Berry finally broke free with the help of a neighbor and raised the alarm.

The 911 dispatcher – one of the first people Amanda Berry spoke to after her decade long captivity – has come under fire for the way he handled the conversation with the clearly distressed 26-year-old.

Experts in the U.S. say a muffled sound at the end of the call is the dispatcher cursing at Amanda Berry.

Audio forensic experts hired by Cleveland station 19 Action News believe swear words were used.

The dispatcher is now being investigated by Cleveland City Hall, according to reports.

Cleveland station WOIO has reported that the results from an investigation by a police forensic audio team were inconclusive.

One of the 19 Action News experts says the “second word is b****”, while the second believes the dispatcher said “f****** b****”.

During the two-minute conversation, Amanda Berry, is heard screaming down the phone: “I’ve been kidnapped and I’ve been missing for 10 years, and I’m, I’m here, I’m free now.”

But multiple times the dispatcher’s response was: “Talk to the police when they get there,” before asking the name of Amanda Berry’s captor, as well as his age and ethnicity.

In the 911 call Amanda Berry implores the dispatcher that she needs the police immediately, but she is told authorities will be sent as soon as a “car becomes open”.

At one point when she says: “I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been on the news for the last 10 years,” the dispatcher replies: “I got that, dear.”

As Amanda Berry becomes more frantic the dispatcher says: “The police are on their way; talk to them when they get there.”

The dispatcher, whose identity has not been revealed, repeats again: “I told you they’re on their way; talk to them when they get there, OK.”

Last month, Cleveland Department of Public Safety Director Martin Flask said police were dispatched and on scene in the west side neighborhood in less than two minutes.

“While the call-taker complied with policies and procedures which enabled a very fast response by police, we have noted some concerns which will be the focus of our review, including the call-taker’s failure to remain on the line with Ms. Berry until police arrived on scene.

“Please be assured that this matter will be investigated, and if necessary, appropriate corrective action taken.”

Michelle Knight disappeared in 2002 when she was 21, Amanda Berry was 16 when she vanished in 2003 and Gina DeJesus went missing about a year later when she was 14.

Christie Brinkley poses in a swimsuit at 59

Former supermodel Christie Brinkley has posed in a swimsuit at 59 – for the first time in over 30 years.

Christie Brinkley rolled back the years to her glory days as one of the most sought after models as she was photographed for Social Life, a new society magazine for The Hamptons.

She last appeared in a magazine in a swimsuit when she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine.

The ex-wife of singer Billy Joel posed in a black two piece swimsuit at her home in the Hamptons for the photo shoot.

Christie Brinkley is also featured in other poses taken around her $30 million home for the launch issue of the magazine.

The former supermodel, who was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1979, 1980 and 1981, tells the magazine she has become addicted to Instagram.

“I find when I walk with a camera in my hand, I am extra alert and attuned to all the extraordinary beauty that abounds, from the smallest detail of a powdery pistil in a flower to the texture of the sky,” she said.

“Taking pictures intensifies my appreciation and awe,” she added.

Christie Brinkley, who is worth more than $80 million and has been married four times, is lives full time in The Hamptons.

Her most recent marriage ended in a bitter acrimony after her husband Peter Cook cheated on her with a 17 year old girl

Christie Brinkley fought a protracted court battle with Peter Cook where he accused her of only being interested in her fame.

The couple had divorced in 2008 but continued to fight publicly over small amounts of money and accusations of sending rude emails and trading nasty swipes in the press.

The pair reached an out of court settlement last year with Christie Brinkley taking to her Facebook page to express her relief the dispute was settled.

Christie Brinkley wrote: “Once and for all, this is my last word on the subject. Let it be known, that I <<moved on>> from my marriage to Peter Cook the moment a police offer tapped me on the shoulder and informed me that <<my husband had been cheating on me in a two year affair with his 17 year-old-daughter>>. Since that moment, it has been an odyssey of frustration as I have navigated the court system with one goal to find peace and protection for my family from the various forms of abuse at the hands of a narcissist.”
