Cult 51: World’s most expensive anti-ageing cream goes on sale at Fortnum & Mason

Cult 51, the latest addition to the litany of unusual lotions and potions, is an anti-ageing cream which claims to have the most expensive ingredients ever.

Cult 51 will cost £125 ($196) for a 1.6 fl oz (50 ml) jar, equivalent to £94,000 ($148,000) a tonne, when it goes on sale online and at upmarket London store Fortnum and Mason tomorrow, July 6.

Model Kelly Brook and singer Myleene Klass are already fans of the night cream made by British chemist Richard Mears after being given samples, but if you’re hoping to get your hands on it, join the queue because there’s already 5,000 women on the waiting list.

In trials so far, Cult 51 has been found to reverse the signs of ageing by up to five years in just six weeks.

It is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by up to 52% in 28 days.

It increases the skin’s absorption of oxygen by up to 45% and in trials reduced the appearance of age spots by up a quarter in 12 weeks.

Richard Mears said it is the first skincare product on the market that can claim to have “3D effects” as it stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen while increasing cell production and oxygen flow in the skin.

He said: “Most anti-ageing creams do only one or two things, so consumers end up buying several products, such as those aimed at day time use, nights, the eyes and skin brightening, to get the full benefits.

“Brands want to sell many products to their customers and maximize sales. However, there is an accepted wisdom within skin care that the skin can only absorb so much active and that too many products actually smother it, preventing it from functioning naturally.”

Richard Mears, who has developed skin products for many luxury cosmetic brands in the past 25 years, said Cult 51’s main ingredient is ATP, a naturally found cell-producing compound which diminishes with age.

He said Cult 51 will increase ATP levels by up to 65% and strengthen the skin’s capillary walls, boosting blood circulation.

It also reacts to humidity, working harder in an air-conditioned environment and cuts the amount of melanin in the skin – which leads to age spots.

The developers said the raw materials used in the cream are the most expensive ever.

Ingredients for a mass market skin care lotion would cost between £800 and £1,500 per metric tonne, while those in a professional cream could cost up £20,000 per metric tonne.

However, the materials used in Cult 51 would add up to £94,000 per metric tonne.

It’s the first product to deliver total skin care suitable for face, eyes, décolletage and hands.

Among trial volunteers, one woman said using Cult 51 for two weeks cleared up a problem over sensitive skin, while another who had acne scarring found pockmarks had virtually disappeared after eight weeks.

The product is available online via the website www.cult51.com.

The most recent product to rival Cult 51 was 111 SKIN Celestial Black Diamond Cream: a potent anti-ageing concoction using rare diamond dust particles that has been developed by NASA scientists and tested on astronauts in outer space.

The galactic cream, which is sold exclusively at none other than luxury department store Harrods, doesn’t come cheap. Beauty aficionados desperate to turn back the clock must pay a staggering £599 for 50 ml.

Amy Campbell and Ermon Lane collision at The Opening

0

FOX Sports Next’s Amy Campbell, reporting on a top high school football recruiting event in Oregon, was in the midst of interviewing recruiting analyst Chad Simmons when rising star footballer Ermon Lane came crashing into her on the sidelines.

Though Amy Campbell later told the sports broadcasting network that she was unharmed, the entire incident was caught on video and as with many sports and news bloopers, has become an Internet sensation.

In the video, picked up by local television station ABC WPBF, Amy Campbell is listening intently to Chad Simmons speak when Ermon Lane comes running up behind her at full speed to catch a pass.

Screams are heard as Amy Campbell, Chad Simmons, and Ermon Lane all take a tumble and drop off camera.

Though Chad Simmons, who saw Ermon Lane coming at the last minute, tried to block Amy Campbell, he was unable to stop the four-star wide receiver prospect.

At 6”2 Ermon Lane is a powerhouse, and though currently a rising senior at Homestead High School in Florida, weights 193 lbs. He is a highly sought after prospect for Universities such as Miami, Florida State or Florida, according to FOX Sports.

The collision happened at The Opening, a summer recruiting camp for the nation’s top high school football players, which was held the Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, according to the television report.

In the aftermath of the crash, which went viral on YouTube, Amy Campbell told FOX Sports she was not injured.

“My knee got a little bit bruised,” she said to the sport network.

“It’s sore today, but nothing serious. It could’ve been a lot worse. At least I can take a hit, right?”

Amy Campbell told her network that the crash may have been captured on film, but was not the first incident that day.

“[Ermon Lane] has almost collided with me several times since I’ve been out here,” she said, explaining that earlier in the day the high school football star narrowly missed her when he came out of the end zone.

Taking it in her stride, Amy Campbell joked around about the incident on Twitter, tweeting: “I can take a hit #grind.”

She kept her good humor when one follower commented: “I’ve watched this no fewer than 10 times in the past few minutes! LOL! Sorry,” to which Amy Campbell responded: “It gets funnier every time.”

She even posted a picture on the social media website of her and Ermon Lane after the collision with the caption: “Still friends!”

Amy Campbell told FOX Sports that her favorite part of the video was when the referee declares the pass completed, ignorant of the accident on the sidelines.

“That to me is just the icing on the cake right there,” Amy Campbell said.

Fifty Shades Of Grey movie to be released in August 2014

The film adaptation of the best-selling novel Fifty Shades Of Grey will be released in the US on August 1st, 2014.

The film has been highly anticipated, given the widespread success of the books (70 million copies of E.L. James’ trilogy have been sold).

And yet, no cast members have been officially named as the stars of the Sam Taylor-Johnson feature.

The story follows the relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, a college student.

The book received as much criticism as it did praise.

It is rather uplifting that Sam Taylor-Johnson, 46, has been attached to direct, despite having a rather small list of credits to her name.

As Forbes magazine noted, this may have been uncommon for women to date, but not for men – for example, Rupert Sanders was attached to direct Snow White And The Huntsmen with only commercials as credits.

The internet has been overflowing with rumors of who would be cast in the two lead roles. And while there has been no official confirmation as to who will play Christian Grey, some stars have categorically denied it.

Despite Sam Taylor-Johnson’s much younger husband Aaron Taylor-Wood, 23, being a potential choice for the male lead, his publicist told USA Today quite simply that: “Aaron is not doing 50 Shades Of Grey.”

Ian Somerhalder and Robert Pattinson have both been pinpointed as potential players for the male lead, but still nothing is official.

Emma Watson famously denied any potential involvement in the film via her Twitter account, writing: “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”

The movie will be produced by Dana Brunetti, producer of The Social Network and TV series House Of Cards, and distributed by Focus Features.

Minnesota State Fair 2013 hypercaloric menu revealed

Minnesota State Fair has released a belly-busting list of 47 news food available to visitors.

Deep fried meatloaf, bacon candied cannelloni, lobster macaroni cheese, fried fare, savory and sweet, makes up most of the list of refreshments available during the 12-day fair, which runs from August 22 to Labor Day on September 2.

State fairs are known for their unhealthy offerings, which in the past have included deep-fried butter on a stick, but Minnesota’s food vendors have come up with some creative – and highly calorific – creations.

Dietician Kristi Pink said: “When you think of the portions that are provided at the fair on top of how many calories and how many fat calories are in that, it’s kind of disgusting because of lot of us over indulge on a daily basis.”

When she checked the calorie count of food sold at the state fair in 2011 she found that the fat and calorie content soon stacked up, according to CBS Minnesota.

“It’s like thousands of calories and most people – an average woman – doesn’t even need 2,000 calories a day,” she said.

While they may be unhealthy if eaten regularly, the fatty feast on offer is a treat many look forward to at the annual state fair.

And, with attractions spread out across 320 acres there will be plenty of opportunities to burn off the calories, or work up an appetite for a second helping.

As soon as the details of the new offerings were released, fans of the state fair took to its Facebook page to show their approval.

The candied bacon cannelloni and battered olives were popular early choices, as were the funnel cake sundaes and chocolate pickles.

New additions to the menu, including Moe & Joe’s mouth-watering grilled glazed donut or the more daring fried pickles served with chocolate will be served up at the fair ground alongside old favorites such as St. Paul’s Mancini’s – bread cones filled with meatballs, a steak sandwich and garlic toast.

Food vendors have a new take on bar food too, with Bourbon infused wurst, wine-glazed meatloaf and battered onion rings made with local craft beer Indeed Daytripper.

Those with a sweet tooth can sample funnel cake sundaes, deep-fried bread pudding, donut batter ice cream, or peanut butter and jelly malts.

For more refined treats, visitors can tuck into deep-fried olives, fresh lobster in creamy macaroni cheese, or a Minnepumpkin pie.

And, for those feeling adventurous, a Comet Corn made from crunchy caramel corn in liquid nitrogen is on offer. The cold treat leaves a trail of “comet dust” smoking from the diner’s mouth and nose.

If the state fair food vendors run out of batter they can always head to the pavilion where 90 lb butter sculptures are crafted to grab some supplies.

Kristi Pink has advised that those wanting to ditch the diet and relax at Minnesota State Fair should consider sharing their food with family and friends, and washing it down with water rather than a soda.

Italy and Argentina to play friendly match to honor Pope Francis

0

The Italian Football Federation has announced they will play Argentina in a friendly match to honor the soccer-loving Argentinean Pope Francis.

The match will be held August 14 in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Pope Francis will watch the match not far away from the Vatican with audiences from both sides, according to the Associated Press.

It’s a long-awaited announcement for Italian manager Cesare Prandelli.  The 55-year-old stated outwardly back in March that he would be ecstatic over a matchup of these two countries for the pope.

“We’ve played friendlies with all the best national teams, only Argentina is missing,” Cesare Prandelli said back on March 27 following a World Cup qualifier with Malta.

“If we could arrange it, it would be nice to have an audience with the pope, who comes from Buenos Aires and loves football, and then go all together with both squads on one bus to the stadium. I couldn’t dream of anything better.”

The matchup has plenty of meaning for the religious Cesare Prandelli.  He brought his whole coaching staff out on a trio of half-hour long nighttime trips to a Polish monastery during the European championships last year.

It’s been a while since these two sides met.  Their last meeting was in 2001, also a friendly where Argentina came out on top 2-1.  Prior to that, Argentina knocked out Italy in the semifinals of the 1990 World Cup on penalties, led by Diego Maradona.

Jimmy Kimmel: Kids explain the National Anthem

It is a song as deeply embedded in the American national psyche as the Stars and Stripes themselves.

But it turns out The Star Spangled Banner is not about a violent and bloody battle 200 years ago… but about monkeys.

That’s if you believe the words of a 6-year-old boy and his friend who made the hilarious claim on a segment of Jimmy Kimmel’s hit television chat show. And he says it with such deadpan sincerity, it’s hard not to take his word for it.

The boys were among a group of children asked by the TV prankster if they knew the lyrics to the country’s national anthem.

And their answers are more than a little enlightening.

Asked if she could sing the song for the camera on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, one of the girls says the second line actually means “we are proudly to all the states and the uniteds” while another reveals that the song’s real title is “Strong Singled Banner”.

And it wasn’t written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, but by legendary record producer Quincy Jones (though it’s not among the 27 Grammys he has won over the years).

Moments later, a girl reveals the War of Independence was really about gaining freedom from Canada before a young boy performs an interpretive dance while singing the anthem.

They gave the cute responses for a segment on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show celebrating yesterday’s Independence Day.

The Star Spangled Banner was in fact based on the lyrics of a poem written by Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.

It was later made to fit the tune of popular melody The Anacreontic Song, by English composer John Stafford Smith and, in 1889, Secretary of the Navy Benjamin F. Tracy ruled that The Star-Spangled Banner be the official tune to be played at the raising of the flag.

Edward Snowden living in luxury at Novotel Moscow Sheremetyevo

It seems that fugitive whistleblower Edward Snowden could be living in luxury at a hotel at a Moscow airport.

The Novotel Moscow Sheremetyevo picks travelers up from the airport, transports them in a bus and houses them on a sealed floor, ensuring that they never step on Russian soil.

It has a fitness centre, games room, library, Turkish/steam bath, and indoor pool.

The hotel is just 35 minutes from central Moscow and with 493 rooms, it is one of the largest in the area.

Guests can treat them self to a massage and have LCD televisions in each room.

Edward Snowden requested asylum in Russia after he leaked papers revealing many of America’s secrets.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered the U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden political asylum – as long as he stops damaging “our American partners” with his leaks.

“Russia never hands over anybody anywhere and has no intention to do so,” said the Kremlin leader, defying a specific U.S. request.

“If he [Edward Snowden] wants to remain here there is one condition – he should stop his work aimed at inflicting damage on our American partners no matter how strange this may sound coming from me.”

Vladimir Putin showed he does not want to provoke a new Cold War in relations with the U.S. by firmly insisting Edward Snowden should stop his disclosures on covert operations which have caused embarrassment to America and infuriated the country’s allies in the EU.

Iceland to grant citizenship to Edward Snowden

Icelandic lawmakers have put legislation on the table that would make NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden a citizen of the polar country.

Member of Iceland’s parliament Ögmundur Jónasson first made the proposition this morning, the last day before the 63-member legislative body begins their summer leave.

Granting citizenship to Edward Snowden, who admits to revealing key details of U.S. surveillance activities would circumvent the rule that he must be on Icelandic soil to apply for asylum there.

The same tactic helped get eccentric chess master Bobby Fischer to Iceland from Japan in 2005 to escape U.S. prosecution for breaking sanctions imposed on the former Yugoslavia, according to 21st Century Wire.

Ögmundur Jónasson, whose liberal Left-Green Party is backing the proposal along with the Pirate Party and Brighter Future Party, put the issue before the Judicial Affairs Committee, but the idea received minimal support.

“We wanted to do this earlier,” wrote Pirate Party politician Helgi Hrafn Gunnarsson on his Facebook page.

“But citizenship is an extremely delicate issue when it’s granted by parliament instead of granted through ordinary legal processes.”

Iceland’s parliament, known as Althing, saw three Pirate Party members elected in 2013. NPR billed the party as an “international online freedom movement”.

Ögmundur Jónasson argued to parliament on Thursday that Edward Snowden “is now being chased and has nowhere to go”, according to Icelandic media.

Edward Snowden, 30, also has a friend in former Icelandic presidential candidate Asthor Magnusson, who is collecting signatures from Icelanders as part of a petition to make his a citizen.

“I appeal to the oldest parliament in the world, the Althing in Iceland to grant a citizenship to Edward Joseph Snowden and issue him with travel documents for safe passage to Reykjavik,” Asthor Magnusson wrote in an appeal to Parliament, according to RT News.

“As matters have developed, I think that Icelanders should say <<This is enough: We support open society and human rights>>. It’s a basic human right to grant this man asylum in Iceland.”

The ruling Conservative and Moderate parties could halt the bill. And some have speculated that the country’s president, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, could succumb to pressure purportedly being placed on international leaders by the U.S. government and veto the legislation.

Not surprisingly, Iceland also plays host to the website WikiLeaks, another well-known whistleblowing foe of the world’s intelligence community.

WikiLeaks has become a sort of public relations face for Edward Snowden, who remains in hiding.

On Monday, WikiLeaks released a letter they say was penned by Edward Snowden.

“I am unbowed in my convictions and impressed at the efforts taken by so many,” Edward Snowden wrote in closing.

Members of the Icelandic parliament, it seems, may be among those “many” taking efforts to help Edward Snowden.

For now, Edward Snowden is believed to be stuck in a Moscow airport transit area, seeking asylum from more than a dozen countries.

Though stuck may be the wrong word. He is one of America’s most wanted fugitives, but it seems that Edward Snowden could be living in luxury at a hotel at a Moscow airport.

The Novotel Moscow Sheremetyevo picks travelers up from the airport, transports them in a bus and houses them on a sealed floor, ensuring that they never step on Russian soil.

It has a fitness centre, games room, library, Turkish/steam bath, and indoor pool.

Bolivia could close US embassy after presidential plane incident

Bolivian President Evo Morales has threatened to close the US embassy in Bolivia after his official plane was banned from European airspace.

The warning came as four other South American leaders offered him support at a special summit on Thursday.

Evo Morales’ plane was forced to land in Austria on Tuesday after France, Portugal, Italy and Spain apparently barred it from flying through their airspace.

There were unfounded suspicions that US fugitive Edward Snowden was on board.

The Bolivian president blamed Washington for pressurizing European countries into refusing him passage.

“My hand would not tremble to close the US embassy,” President Evo Morales said.

“We have dignity, sovereignty. Without America, we are better off politically and democratically.”

His presidential jet was rerouted as he travelled from a meeting in Russia where he had suggested he would be willing to consider an asylum application from Edward Snowden.

Former CIA contractor Edward Snowden is believed to be holed up at the transit area of Moscow airport after leaking details of a vast US surveillance programme.

Evo Morales was joined by the presidents of Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Venezuela and Suriname at a meeting to discuss the plane dispute in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba on Thursday.

The leaders issued a statement after the meeting demanding an explanation from France, Portugal, Italy and Spain over their actions.

The US was not mentioned in the statement, but several of the leaders criticized the Americans in comments after the meeting.

“If this had happened to the president of the United States, it probably would have been grounds for war,” said Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.

“They think they can attack, crush, destroy international law.”

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said in a TV interview on Friday that Madrid had “no reason to apologize”.

He said airspace was never closed to Evo Morales’ plane, but that the delay in Austria meant the flight permit had expired and had to be renewed.

Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo also said in reference to Edward Snowden: “They told us he was inside [the plane].”

His comment is the first official recognition by the European states that the incident with Evo Morales’ plane was connected with the Snowden affair.

However, he did not say who had given the information to the Spanish authorities.

France earlier apologized for the plane incident, blaming it on “conflicting information”.

The US state department has not commented directly on the latest claims, saying only that Washington had “been in touch with a broad range of countries” over the Snowden case.

Demonstrators marched on the French embassy in La Paz on Wednesday, burning the French flag and demanding the expulsion of the ambassador to Bolivia.

Evo Morales’ plane took off from Vienna on Wednesday morning and arrived back in La Paz on Wednesday night.

Sheena Monnin: Former Miss Pennsylvania ordered to pay Donald Trump $5 million

Former Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin, who resigned after claiming to the world that the Miss USA pageant is rigged, must now pay Donald Trump $5 million for defaming the organization he co-owns.

Sheena Monnin was a contestant in the Miss USA 2012 pageant before she appeared on national television claiming the beauty pageant organization chooses its winners ahead of time.

Donald Trump subsequently sued Sheena Monnin. An arbitrator then ruled in favor of the Miss Universe Organization, awarding it $5 million in damages and stated Sheena Monnin’s statements “showed a reckless disregard”. This week, a judge affirmed that decision.

“On July 2nd, the Southern District Court of New York ruled on my appeal of the $5 million arbitration award,” Sheena Monnin wrote in a July 4 post on a Facebook page billed as the Sheena Monnin Support Page.

“I am grateful to Judge Oetken for his review of the case before affirming the award.”

Judge J. Paul Oetken, in his 30-page ruling, wrote “the Court does not take lightly that Monnin is compelled to pay what is a devastating monetary award”.

However, J. Paul Oetken wrote: “Sympathy, or apparent inequity, may play no role in a court’s legal analysis.”

Now Sheena Monnin must pony up the cash after her earlier struggles just to come up with $50,000 in legal fees.

“The legal fees for standing for truth amount to over $50,000,” writes Sheena Monnin on her Facebook page.

Former Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin, who defamed Miss USA pageant, was ordered to pay Donald Trump $5 million

“I still need to raise money for my legal defense fund. I would greatly appreciate any and all donations.”

Her economic woes all stem from a few statements originally made on Facebook and then the Today show.

Sheena Monnin accused Miss Universe Organization of rigging the competition when she resigned from her Miss Pennsylvania position.

She claimed Karina Brez, who was representing Florida at the contest in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 3, recited the top five women after seeing a list of their names backstage.

In a Facebook post announcing her resignation, she wrote: “Apparently the morning of June 3rd [Karina Brez] saw a folder lying open to a page that said ‘FINAL SHOW Telecast, June 3, 2012” and she saw the places for Top 5 already filled in.

“After the Top 16 were called and we were standing backstage she hesitantly said to me and another contestant that she knew who the Top 5 were. I said <<who do you think they will be?>>.”

She said that she didn’t “think” she “knew” because she saw the list that morning.

“She relayed whose names were on the list. Then we agreed to wait and see if that was indeed the Top 5 called that night. After it was indeed the Top 5 I knew the show must be rigged.”

Miss Universe Organization vehemently denied the claims and said that Sheena Monnin had cited the new rules allowing transgender contestants as her reason for resigning.

Donald Trump also denied the claims and proceeded with the lawsuit against Sheena Monnin, who he believed was suffering “loser’s remorse”.

“I did see her for about a second. I never felt that she had a chance,” he told the Today last year.

“I know what I heard, and I know what I in turn witnessed… so I’m prepared to continue to march forward,” Sheena Monnin responded on Today.

“I feel an injustice has been done, not only to the other people who were not in the top five, but to the thousands of pageant girls across the country who competed, believing this is an honest system.”

Nelson Mandela is in permanent vegetative state facing impending death, court files reveal

Nelson Mandela is being kept alive by a breathing machine and faces “impending death”, a South African court documents reveal.

Nelson Mandela’s health is “perilous”, according to documents filed in the court case that resulted in the remains of his three deceased children being reburied Thursday in their original graves.

Court documents from June 26 said: “The anticipation of his impending death is based on real and substantial grounds.”

Nelson Mandela, who was hospitalized on June 8, remains in critical but stable condition, according to the office of President Jacob Zuma, who visited the anti-apartheid leader on Thursday.

The South African presidency has denied that Nelson Mandela is in a “vegetative state”, and reiterated former statements that the beloved former leader is in a critical, but stable condition.

The Presidency released a statement “clarifying” Nelson Mandela’s condition, Sky News reported.

They said: “We confirm our earlier statement released … after President Jacob Zuma visited Madiba in hospital.”

Nelson Mandela is under around-the-clock care of a team of nurses, the presidency said, hours after the sensational court reports were revealed.

The documents read: “They say the condition of the country’s first black president is <<perilous>>.”

“The anticipation of his impending death is based on real and substantial grounds,” they add.

Nelson Mandela is being kept alive by a breathing machine and faces impending death
Nelson Mandela is being kept alive by a breathing machine and faces impending death

The legal papers relate to a bitter legal battle between rival family factions over where Nelson Mandela should be buried.

After examining him last week, the doctors wrote: “He is in a permanent vegetative state and is assisted in breathing by a life support machine.”

Medically, this means he is unresponsive and in a state between coma and death.

“He’s basically gone,” said Charlene Smith, Nelson Mandela’s authorized biographer.

The statements come as the remains of the 94-year-old’s three deceased children were reburied at their original resting site following a court order to return them after Mandla Mandela moved the bodies.

It comes as the feud between Nelson Mandela’s family descended into soap opera farce today when his grandson and heir Mandla accused relatives of adultery and milking the fame of the revered anti-apartheid leader.

In a news conference broadcast live on TV that stunned South Africans, Mandla Mandela confirmed rumors that his young son, Zanethemba, was in fact the child of an illicit liaison between his brother Mbuso and Mandla’s now ex-wife Anais Grimaud.

With Nelson Mandela on life-support in a Pretoria hospital, the escalating feud has transfixed and appalled South Africa in equal measure.

“Mbuso impregnated my wife,” Mandla Mandela said in Mvezo, the Eastern Cape village 450 miles)south of Johannesburg where Nelson Mandela was born and where Mandla serves as the formal chief of the clan.

Mandla Mandela, 39, first raised questions about his son’s paternity last year when he split from French-speaking Anais Grimaud, who has since moved back home to the Indian Ocean island of Reunion. He also revealed then that he was unable to have children.

His attempts to get the family to address the questions of Zanethemba’s paternity had been rebuffed in the interests of preserving a semblance of unity in South Africa’s most famous family, Mandla Mandela said.

“This matter has never been discussed by the so-called members of the family who say that they want to ensure there is harmony in this family,” he said, challenging reporters to conduct DNA tests to confirm his allegations.

“The facts are there. You may go and find out, do the necessary tests that are needed,” he said. His brother Mbuso has denied being the father of the child.

Newspapers have plastered “Mandela vs. Mandela” headlines across their front pages and editorials have bemoaned the cruel irony of bitter divisions inside the family of a man lauded the world over as the epitome of reconciliation between races.

The government said that Nelson Mandela remained “critical but stable” after nearly four weeks in hospital.

The sleepy community of Mvezo, set amid the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape, has been at the centre of a vicious dispute that may ultimately determine where South Africa’s first black president will be laid to rest.

Kris and Bruce Jenner celebrate Fourth of July together after confirming they are living apart

Kris Jenner confirmed last week that her husband Bruce had moved out “to get away for a bit”, but the couple appeared to be doing just fine while celebrating the 4th of July.

Kris Jenner, 57, and Bruce Jenner, 63, were spotted laughing and hugging on the balcony of Bruce’s temporary seaside home in Malibu with their daughters Kendall and Kylie.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians stars were seen leaning against the balcony as Bruce Jenner held Kris from behind while they posed for a picture together.

The pair appeared in good spirits as they grinned for the camera.

Kris Jenner looked elegant in a seashell-patterned kaftan and white hat as she also chatted with her 14-year-old daughter Kylie and a friend.

The “momager” said last week that Bruce had moved out of their Calabasas mansion to get some space.

“It does get a little congested in our house,” admitted the reality star, hinting that the rumors are true that daughter Kim Kardashian, boyfriend Kanye West and their new baby have moved in to their house so Kris Jenner can help the new parents with daughter North, nicknamed Nori.

Kris Jenner appeared completely onboard with allowing her husband of 23 years to “have fun” without her.

“It’s a wonderful idea,” she said.

“It’s amazing to have a little bit of space.”

But she insisted that he slept at home most nights, although “once in a while” he’ll remain at the beachfront mansion.

But a family insider told RadarOnline.com: “The entire household has been turned upside down because Kim and Nori have moved in. Bruce has been run out of the house! Kris didn’t encourage him to stay either.”

Bruce Jenner “decided to ditch the family home because he was constantly being told to be quiet because of baby Nori” so he thought it would be best to spend some time with his daughters and give Kim Kardashian and Kanye West some space.

The former Olympic gold medalist athlete is a big fan of aviation and often flies expensive scale model helicopters in his spare time but was told his mini-pilot fun would have to be out on hold while the baby settles in.

Bruce Jenner – who has been married to the Kris for 22 years – was seen buying a separate home in the latest series of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but despite occasionally spending time apart the couple insist their marriage is rock solid.

She accompanied the photo with the caption: “Happy 4th. About to embark on a camping trip with @slatertrout. Hope you all have a fun holiday with your loved ones!”

Ireland Baldwin, who is attempting to become the fashion world’s latest “It Girl”, told People magazine recently: “I have never met anyone who is a more incredible person in my life,” she said, referring to Slater Trout.

“I would say he is my best friend. We can act stupid in public, private, or wherever and we are always laughing.”

Slater Trout then chimed in: “We don’t do normal stuff. We go paddle boarding with humpback whales in Maui.

“We go on athletic dates. And very romantic ones too. Like we will go to like a bluff and star gaze and go on trail runs and walk the dogs.”

Despite Ireland Baldwin living in Los Angeles with mother Kim Basinger, she still makes time to visit her boyfriend “once a month”.

Simi Valley 4th of July fireworks show: At least 14 people injured due to wrong explosion

At least fourteen people have been injured due to malfunctioning fireworks at an annual 4th of July show in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles.

Police Cmdr. John Parks said a detonation occurred about 9:20 p.m. Thursday at the city-run Fireworks Extravaganza located at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center and Park in Simi Valley.

It wasn’t clear how many people were in attendance but John Parks said the event usually attracts several thousand revelers.

Jordan Roberts, a public safety dispatcher with the Ventura County Fire Department, said more than a dozen people were being taken to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.

Emergency medical and fire personnel were already at the park to monitor the fireworks show, so the victims were attended too quickly.

No other details were immediately made available.

After the blast, the park was evacuated but aerial footage showed dozens of people lingering on the outskirts of the scene and near the triage area set up on the grass.

Simi Valley is about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Fourth of July 2013 celebrated with fireworks, parades and parties

Extravagant displays of 4th of July fireworks lit up the skies around the Unites States, including 19 single bursts in Arizona to remember the firefighters killed in a wildfire.

The Statue of Liberty reopened eight months after it was shuttered by Superstorm Sandy, and President Barack Obama urged citizens to live up to the words of the Declaration of Independence.

Four barges carrying 40,000 shells on the Hudson River on Thursday night unleashed a barrage of brilliant reds, whites and blues – some in shapes and smiley faces – as spectators marveled at the classic New York over-the-top fireworks display, snapping videos and pictures on their cellphones.

In Arizona, a fire chief read the names of the 19 firefighters killed last weekend battling a wildfire while 19 single fireworks burst overhead.

“Less than 100 hours ago, the city of Prescott, the state of Arizona and the nation lost 19 of the best, the bravest firefighters ever dispatched into the forest,” fire department division chief Don Devendorf said.

The commemorative starbursts were followed by a raucous 20-minute display choreographed to patriotic pop songs, which drew cheering, grins and shouts of “America!”

In California, at least 14 people were injured by malfunctioning fireworks at a large community park in Simi Valley. Officials say more than a dozen people were taken to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. No other details were immediately available.

Earlier Thursday, hundreds lined up to be among the first to board boats destined for Lady Liberty.

Nationwide, Boston hosted its first large gathering since the marathon bombing that killed three and injured hundreds, and Philadelphia, Washington and New Orleans hosted large holiday concerts. A Civil War reenactment commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg drew as many as 40,000 people to Pennsylvania. In Arizona, sober tributes were planned for 19 firefighters who died this week battling a blaze near Yarnell.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, speaking at the reopening of the Statue of Liberty, choked up as she told the crowd she was wearing a purple ribbon in memory of the fallen firefighters.

“Nineteen firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty, and we as a nation stand together,” Sally Jewell said through tears.

The island was decorated with star-spangled bunting, but portions remain blocked off with large construction equipment, and the main ferry dock was boarded up. Repairs to brick walkways and docks were ongoing. But much of the work has been completed since Sandy swamped the 12-acre island in New York Harbor, and visitors were impressed.

The statue itself was unharmed, but the land took a beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were torn up and buildings were flooded. The storm destroyed electrical systems, sewage pumps and boilers. Hundreds of National Park Service workers from as far away as California and Alaska spent weeks cleaning mud and debris.

“It is one of the most enduring icons of America, and we pulled it off – it’s open today,” National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said. “Welcome.”

The statue was open for a single day last year – October 28, the day before Superstorm Sandy struck. It had been closed the previous year for security upgrades. Neighboring Ellis Island remains closed and there has been no reopening date set.

Elsewhere in New York, throngs of revelers packed Brooklyn’s Coney Island to see competitive eating champ Joey Chestnut scarf down 69 hot dogs to break a world record and win the title for a seventh year at the 98th annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sonya Thomas defended her title with nearly 37 dogs.

In his weekly radio address from Washington, Obama urged Americans to work to secure liberty and opportunity for their own children and future generations. The first family was to host U.S. servicemen and women at the White House for a cookout.

Atlanta and Alaska planned holiday runs – thousands were racing up a 3,022-foot peak in Seward. In New Orleans, the Essence Festival celebrating black culture and music kicked off along the riverfront.

The celebratory mood turned somber in Oklahoma and Maine with fatal accidents during parades. In Edmond, Oklahoma, a boy died after being run over by a float near the end of the town’s LibertyFest parade. In Bangor, Maine, the driver of a tractor in the parade was killed after the vehicle was struck by an old fire truck.

In Boston, attendance for the city’s celebration appeared to be down early, but increased as the start of the festivities approached. Crowds on the Charles River Esplanade seeming smaller than in recent years, while a robust law enforcement presence greeted revelers gathering for a performance by the Boston Pops and a fireworks display.

Among those at Boston’s festivities was Carlos Arredondo, the cowboy hat-wearing marathon attendee who became part of one of the indelible images of the bombings’ aftermath: helping rush a badly wounded man from the scene in a wheelchair, his legs torn to pieces.

Carlos Arredondo said the July 4 celebration – an event authorities believe the bombing suspects initially planned to target – is an important milestone in the healing process, not just for him but also those who were stopping to tell him their own stories of that day.

“I think there’s no better place to be,” said Carlos Arredondo, wearing his cowboy hat and a “Boston Strong” shirt in the marathon’s blue and yellow colors.

Not everyone was welcoming the masses – Hermosa Beach, California, was ramping up police patrols after years of drunken and raucous behavior from revelers. Hartford, Connecticut, postponed fireworks because the Connecticut River was too high.

Nationwide, anti-surveillance protests cropped up in a number of cities on Independence Day with activists speaking out against recent disclosures that the National Security Agency has been secretly logging people’s phone calls and Internet activity. In Philadelphia, more than 100 people marched downtown to voice their displeasure, chanting, “NSA, go away!”

But in Union Beach, New Jersey, which was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, residents had something to celebrate. The working-class town won a party and fireworks contest from the television station Destination America and USA Weekend magazine.

David Siegel and Lauren Greenfield feud over The Queen of Versailles

David and Jackie Siegel were just trying to live the American Dream: succeed at business, own a big house, enjoy the spoils of their labor.

But after achieving those dreams, they found themselves wanting more – much, much more.

David and Jackie Siegel’s 26,000-square-foot house was simply not enough. Happiness could be found, the couple thought, only by building the largest house in all of America: a sprawling, 90,000-square-foot mansion in Orlando, Florida, modeled after the French palace of Versailles, complete with a bowling alley and roller-skating rink, a wing for the children, 10 kitchens, and $5 million of marble.

But when the U.S. economic bubble burst, the Siegels, who were so wealthy they seemed untouchable, turned out to be no different from the tens of thousands of families who lost their far-humbler dream homes. And film director Lauren Greenfield  was there to capture their financial downfall, from Jackie Siegel’s $1-million clothing-budget zenith to the family’s stuck-in-coach-class nadir.

The drama of Lauren Greenfield’s recent documentary, The Queen of Versailles, first gripped audiences at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in January. Screened on the opening night, the film won her an award for best director and has since become one of the most-watched documentaries of the year, prompting speculation that it could earn an Oscar nomination.

“It was the same [old] story about the American dream, but really about the flaws as much as the virtues of that dream, as well as about the mistakes that were made because of the economic crisis,” Lauren Greenfield said.

“Jackie and David’s story, even though it was extreme, was kind of symbolic of the mistakes we all made on different levels.”

In one scene, a nanny asks Jackie Siegel – a former beauty queen from a small town, who’s 30 years David Siegel’s junior – if one large, cavernous room in Versailles is a future bedroom.

“No, that’s my closet!” Jackie Siegel exclaims, her eyes wide, grinning as if she almost can’t believe her good fortune. Later in the film, after the family arrives in an airport after having flown coach (a first for the children), Jackie Siegel walks up to a rental-car counter and asks the clerk earnestly: “What is my driver’s name?”

David and Jackie Siegel
David and Jackie Siegel

Lauren Greenfield became interested in the lives of the 1 percenters as an undergraduate, where she studied photography under Barbara Norfleet, Ph.D., then a lecturer and curator of still photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, who had produced a book called All the Right People, about the WASPs of the Northeast. “Part of what drove her [Barbara Norfleet] to make that book was that in the archives there were very few photos of rich people,” Lauren Greenfield said.

“The photos that existed…were only commissioned portraits by the subjects themselves, or society pictures which didn’t have any context because they weren’t natural moments. For me, when I started the Queen of Versailles, it was a little bit similar. We see so much of the life of the affluent as these packaged, manipulated reality-TV shows, or advertising. I wanted to do a real-life look at this family, particularly because Jackie and David had this other quality – a down-to-earth American quality. They came from humble origins and were a rags-to-riches story.”

Lauren Greenfield met Jackie Siegel by chance at a Hollywood party and immediately fell for the couple’s tale. (The filmmaker had asked if she could photograph Jackie Siegel’s ostentatious metallic purse; the image eventually became one of Time magazine’s “Photos of the Year,” illustrating the “high life” and “gilded age” of America). But that was in 2007, when David Siegel’s company – the largest privately owned time-share company in the world – had netted him a billion dollars.

When Lauren Greenfield began filming in 2009, she didn’t expect her little movie (she and her husband, Frank Evers, financed the film, calling it “a labor of love”) about the biggest McMansion ever built would even be seen in theaters. But as the Siegels’ fortunes plummeted unexpectedly before her camera’s lens, Lauren Greenfield knew her film would have a far wider appeal.

Lauren Greenfield – a photographer and filmmaker who has captured youth culture through projects like HBO’s THIN, a documentary about an eating disorder center in Coconut Creek, Florida, and has had her photographs published in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and National Geographic – got to know her subjects intimately, practically moving in with them as she filmed up to 12 hours a day. She and Jackie became friends. But Lauren Greenfield admits she was appalled by their inability to control their spending, even when everything pointed to impending disaster. The tipping point was David’s refusal to sell his other obsession, a $600-million, high-end time-share complex on the Las Vegas strip that he’d personally financed through loans. By 2010, the time-share market had dried up because so many buyers had overextended themselves on their unit mortgages.

“I wasn’t rooting for David to keep the tower, because I think it was a valuable lesson learned, in terms of the overreach,” she says.

“I think that’s the power [of the movie]. David speaks the morality tale at the end when he says, ‘We need to learn to live within our means, we need to get back to reality. I was using cheap money to buy big buildings and I thought it would go on forever, and when they took away the money I was like, <<Whoa>>.

“In that sense there is a happy ending, because you see what’s really important to them,” Lauren Greenfield continues.

“For us as viewers, it gives us a chance to think about what’s important, what our values are, and what is enough.”

Although David Siegel is now suing Lauren Greenfield for defamation (Greenfield insists the lawsuit is more about money than ill will: at a recent premiere of the film in Tampa, David and Jackie Siegel rented out two theaters and showed up in a party bus to watch the movie with all of their friends), she still says she wouldn’t have changed anything.

“I was extremely lucky because they opened their doors wide when things were great, but they kept those doors open equally wide when things got tough,” she explains. “Jackie would often say, <<Our story is like so many other people’s, but on a bigger level and with bigger proportions>>.”

Danica Patrick returns to Daytona 500

0

Danica Patrick is to return this weekend to Daytona 500, the track where she experienced her greatest stock-car moment.

Danica Patrick, 31, just won’t have the car she used to achieve her record-setting feat in the Daytona 500.

She became the first woman to win a pole for a Sprint Cup race and then a week later scored the highest finish for a woman in Daytona 500 history by placing eighth. But she wrecked her Daytona car in May at Talladega Superspeedway.

Danica Patrick will instead have the car she tested with at Daytona in January and again at a Goodyear tire test there in April.

“We lost that poor [pole-winning] car at Talladega, so we are going back with our backup, which is a really good car anyway,” Danica Patrick said.

“We tested with it at the beginning of the year, and I expect it to go in a similar fashion. I think we will still be pretty fast.

“Will we qualify on the pole and run in the top three or [top] five all day? I don’t know. Maybe.”

Danica Patrick ran third throughout the race but got shuffled back to eighth on the final lap of the Daytona 500.

“The heat always changes things a little bit, but it’s a different car and it’s going to be a different Hendrick engine,” Danica Patrick said.

“All that stuff just leads to a slightly different weekend. But I expect it to be somewhat similar, at least from a good standpoint in my head.”

That’s important, considering it hasn’t been the best of seasons for Danica Patrick, who is 27th in the Cup standings and has not had another top-10 finish and just two other top-20 finishes in her first full-time Cup season.

Danica Patrick is to return this weekend to Daytona 500, the track where she experienced her greatest stock-car moment
Danica Patrick is to return this weekend to Daytona 500, the track where she experienced her greatest stock-car moment

Given her ability to go fast on restrictor-plate tracks, her Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief believes she can win at Daytona this weekend.

“We felt like we had a shot to win it [in February], ran in the top three or four all day and had a fast car, and it came down to the last lap and [she] kind of got snookered a little bit there at the end,” crew chief Tony Gibson said.

“We felt like we were definitely in contention to win it, so we’re going back there with the same mindset, to try to be the fastest car in qualifying and try to close the deal at the end of this thing.”

Danica Patrick said that all of the advice she has gotten after the Daytona 500 is that she really didn’t do anything wrong on the final lap. She was more a victim of circumstance.

“I was just frustrated that I didn’t have a better plan,” Danica Patrick said.

“Tony [Stewart] said to me, <<I really feel like you had more to lose in your position than you had to gain by trying something, so I think that you did the right thing>>.

“That made me feel better – a little bit. Was I still mad that I went from third to eighth on the lap? No, [but] I was still disappointed in it.”

It’s disappointing whenever a driver has a chance to win and doesn’t capitalize. But for Danica Patrick, it also was disappointing because her IndyCar background helps more at Daytona than possibly any other track.

Danica Patrick knows that a good finish can help relieve pressure on her team throughout the season.

“It’s obviously a track that we feel like we can win at,” Tony Gibson said.

“I feel like that’s right in Danica’s wheelhouse there. She likes the drafting. She likes the high speeds, and I think most of that comes from the IndyCar side of it. … We work hard every week, but when it comes to the restrictor-plate racing, especially going to Daytona, we go all out.

“We put every little thing we can into those cars, because we know that that’s a track that we can win at and we can really do some damage, on the good side.”

Tony Gibson and his crew aren’t used to so much pressure. Many worked at Dale Earnhardt Inc. with Dale Earnhardt Jr., but even Tony Gibson admits that the worldwide celebrity of Danica Patrick is different.

“You want your performance to be good because you don’t want to let your fans down,” Tony Gibson said.

“You don’t want to let her fans down.

“When you’ve got to look a little girl in the eye and she asks you what happened last week or why didn’t Danica win, it’s pretty hard to come up with an answer that’s going to satisfy a little girl.”

Survey: iPhone 5 most hated handset while majority loves Samsung Galaxy S4

According to a new research, Apple’s iPhone 5 received the biggest customer backlash following its launch in 2012.

One in five posts on social networks were critical of Apple’s most recent handset, with the majority of people complaining about the introduction of a new power socket, the inaccuracy of Apple Maps and how similar the phone was to previous models.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 received the least complaints – just 11% – according to figures from analysts We Are Social.

We Are Social scanned Twitter, blogs and forums following the launch of four major handsets – Apple’s iPhone 5 in September 2012, Samsung Galaxy S4 in March 2013, the BlackBerry Z10 launch event in January 2013 and Nokia’s launch of the Lumia 920, first announced in September 2012.

The iPhone 5 came in for a barrage of complaints for everything from its lack of innovation to its new power connector socket and its mapping application.

Apple added a Lightning to 30-pin power socket to the iPhone 5, which meant previous Apple users couldn’t use their older chargers to charge the new device.

Apple then charged extra for an adapter.

Previous iPhones used a Google mapping application but this was replaced with Apple Maps in the iPhone 5.

This led to complaints about misplacement of landmarks, poor satellite images and wrong directions.

Less than two weeks after the launch, Apple issued a statement apologizing for the frustration Apple Maps had caused customers and recommended they try alternative mapping apps.

There were also complaints about picture quality of photos taken on select iPhone 5s, with some customers saying there was a purple discoloration on images.

Other iPhone 5 owners were left angry when the coating on their handset chipped off, exposing bright aluminium underneath.

This became known as “scuffgate” when Apple refused to acknowledge the problem.

Other iPhone 5 users reported that white handsets leaked light behind the screen.

A study finds that Apple’s iPhone 5 is the most hated handset, while the majority of people love the Samsung Galaxy S4
A study finds that Apple’s iPhone 5 is the most hated handset, while the majority of people love the Samsung Galaxy S4

Ed Kitchingman, senior analyst at We Are Social, said: “Brands were often on the receiving end of criticism for their handsets offering nothing new to the previous model.

“The most successful launches were those that captured the consumer’s imagination by talking about the handset’s new and innovative features.

“And while leaks can be an important tool in building success, give away too much and the handset loses its ‘wow’ factor upon launch.”

He said Samsung had the most “wow factor” with 56% of discussions being about new or different features with a particular emphasis on its eye tracking.

In contrast, only 29% of conversations about the iPhone 5 launch were focused on different features as dissent grows about the lack of innovation at Apple.

However, the iPhone 5 was by far the most talked-about launch on social media, with around 1.7 million conversations, compared to 300,000 mentions of the Z10, 140,000 references to the Galaxy S4 and 45,000 comments about the Lumia 920.

The research claims Apple still has the strongest brand loyalty, though, due to 42 per cent of conversations about the iPhone 5 launch based around the Apple brand itself.

Men dominate smartphone launch day conversations with 83% of all mentions coming from men and just 17% generated by women.

On a non-launch day, however, anywhere between 28% and 41% of conversations about mobile phones come from women.

Apple’s next iPhone could be announced on September 10 and go on sale ten days later, according to recent reports.

The phone – dubbed iPhone 5S – is rumored to have internet speeds around ten times as fast as 3G.

Analysts also expect a second, cheaper handset – dubbed iPhone 6 – to be announced as early as September 27.

It will be the first time in Apple’s iPhone history that the company has unveiled two handsets in the same month.

We Are Social’s figures contradict a recent study from Quality Insight in Korea.

The marketing firm surveyed 44,168 people about their handset and the iPhone was rated the best smartphone.

The participants said that the iPhone rarely failed, with only 17% complaining about technical issues with their Apple phone.

This is compared to 31% who reported issues with Samsung phones ranging from battery charging problems to screen quality issues.

Apple’s faults were related to touch or button errors.

Anna Chapman proposes marriage to Edward Snowden via Twitter

Russian spy Anna Chapman has proposed marriage to NSA leaker Edward Snowden via Twitter.

Anna Chapman was short and sweet: “Snowden, will you marry me?!”

The tweet came just as the world began to wonder if Edward Snowden was still in Anna Chapman’s country of Russia – where he’s been holed up in a Moscow airport for days – or if he’d managed to sneak aboard the flight of Bolivian President Evo Morales headed for South America.

Latin America, specifically Venezuela, is thought to be Edward Snowden’s last hope for asylum after withdrawing his petition to Russia Tuesday.

Since her own espionage controversy – along with nine others accused of spying in 2010 – Anna Chapman has led a busy life.

Anna Chapman was immediately catapulted into the limelight as her pictures were splashed around the world.

The daughter of a senior KGB agent has become a celebrity in Russia since she returned in the summer of 2010.

She has previously appeared on the catwalk at Russian Fashion Week in Moscow clothed in a skin-tight leather ensemble.

Anna Chapman has also modeled, edited a magazine, given lectures and now runs a foundation.

Last year she appeared on the catwalk in the Mediterranean city of Antalya, a top Turkish vacation destination.

The controversial temptress has made many tongues wag since her name was first splashed across the front page of magazines and websites worldwide.

But Edward Snowden, at least in his pre-international controversy days, claims to have elicited some leering himself.

“I like my girlish figure that attracts girls,” Edward Snowden wrote as an 18-year-old.

That figure later won Edward Snowden an attractive dancer Lindsay Mills.

And though Lindsay Mills may not be a globetrotting diplomat’s daughter, if you look at her in just the right light she does resemble Anna Chapman.

Statue of Liberty reopens on 4th of July

The Statue of Liberty, shut last year after Superstorm Sandy, has reopened to the public on Independence Day.

Crowds are flocking once again to see the New York monument, which was swamped by tidal surges during post-tropical cyclone Sandy in October.

Events are also being held in Boston, Washington, Atlanta, Philadelphia and New Orleans to mark the US holiday.

Security precautions will be tight at major parades and fireworks displays.

The 151-ft Statue of Liberty reopened on Thursday morning at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by New York’s mayor.

Most of Liberty Island, the attraction’s home off lower Manhattan, was deluged by last autumn’s powerful storm.

Although the 127-year-old Lady Liberty herself was unscathed, there was widespread damage to her 12-acre site.

Railings, docks and paving stones were smashed, while electrical systems, sewerage and boilers were wrecked.

Hundreds of National Park Service workers have been cleaning up the mud and debris, with some repairs still under way.

The neighboring Ellis Island, once the nation’s busiest gateway and home to a famous immigration museum, suffered far worse in the storm and remains closed.

The damage to both islands has been estimated at $59 million.

“This to us, Liberty Island, is really about a rebirth,” Heather Leykam, who came to see the statue with her husband and three children from their home in Brooklyn, told the Associated Press news agency.

“It is a sense of renewal for the city and the country.”

New York City will later stage its annual fireworks display over the Hudson River with live performances by Taylor Swift and others.

At nearby Coney Island in Brooklyn, hungry competitors gathered for the annual Nathan’s Famous hotdog-eating contest.

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut devoured 69 hotdogs and buns in 10 minutes to beat his own world record, successfully defending his title for the seventh time.

The women’s event was won by Sonya Thomas, who scoffed nearly 37 hotdogs and buns in the same time.

Across the country, star-spangled bunting will be rolled out for celebrations, picnics and barbecues.

Boston is to stage its first major public gathering since the deadly bombings at the city’s marathon on April 15. Law enforcement officials have said those blasts were originally intended for 4th of July.

A US national security official told Reuters news agency on Wednesday that intelligence agencies were unaware of any plot timed to coincide with the holiday.

Police will use hand-held chemical detectors, radiation scanners and camera surveillance to screen crowds at some of Thursday’s events.

In Washington, a 17-minute fireworks display will take place on the National Mall with live music by Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond.

Independence Day commemorates the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776 from Great Britain during the war of the American Revolution.

Hot Dog: Facts, History and FAQ’s

July is National Hot Dog Month, and according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of “meat” in record numbers this summer.

The NHDSC estimates that over 7 billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

During the July 4th weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year), 155 million will be downed.
Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each. They are clearly one of the country’s most loved, but most misunderstood, comfort foods.

Below you’ll find some frequently asked questions regarding the hot dog. For more information, visit the NHDSC’s website at www.hot-dog.org.

How did the hot dog get its name?

The term “hot dog” is credited to sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. At a 1901 baseball game at the Polo Grounds in New York, vendors began selling hot dachsund sausages in rolls.

From the press box, Tad Dorgan could hear the vendors yelling: “Get your dachshund sausages while they’re red hot!”

He sketched a cartoon depicting the scene but wasn’t sure how to spell “dachshund” so he called them simply, “hot dogs”. And the rest is history.

What exactly is a hot dog made of?

Nope. You’re not allowed to ask that one. And do you really want to know anyway? For the record, the Council refers to the actual meat as “specially selected meat trimmings.”

They would like to point out, however, that thanks to stricter U.S. Department of Agriculture rules, hot-dog meat has become much leaner and, un

less otherwise indicated, must be made from muscle (as most meat found in supermarkets is).
Most supermarket hot dogs use cellulose casings, which are removed before packaging. Some, however, still use the traditional natural casings, made from animal intestines.

By law, a hot dog can contain up to 3.5% of “non-meat ingredients”.

Don’t be scared. This is usually just some type of milk or soy product used to add to the nutritional value. Many hot dogs may be relatively high in fat and sodium, but they are also a good source of protein, iron, and other necessary vitamins.

What is the most popular condiment for a hot dog?

Council research shows that for adults, mustard is the condiment of choice, while children prefer ketchup. That said, preferences do change from region to region. For instance, hot dogs in New York are generally served with a lighter mustard and steamed onions, while Chicago hot dogs can come with mustard, relish, onions, tomato slices, or pretty much anything at all.

Kids were also asked what condiment they would use “if their moms weren’t watching”, and 25% opted for chocolate sauce.

Do I spread my condiment on the meat or on the bread?

Always dress the dog and not the bun. The Council also recommends the following order for condiment application: first wet (mustard for example), then chunky (relish or onions), then cheese if desired, then any spices.

What should I drink with my hot dog?

Lemonade and iced tea – the tastiest drinks for a summer barbecue – are perfect with hot dogs.

How many hot dogs do Americans consume over July 4th holiday?

According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council (NHDSC), Americans are expected to eat 150 million hot dogs over the July 4th holiday alone, part of the 7 billion hot dogs eaten over the summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

How did the modern day hot dog become such an iconic part of America? It’s a tough question to answer and even the NHDSC offers little clarity:

“It is likely that the North American hot dog comes from a widespread common European sausage brought here by butchers of several nationalities. Also in doubt is who first served the dachshund sausage with a roll. One report says a German immigrant sold them, along with milk rolls and sauerkraut, from a push cart in New York City’s Bowery during the 1860′s. In 1871, Charles Feltman, a German butcher opened up the first Coney Island hot dog stand selling 3,684 dachshund sausages in a milk roll during his first year in business.”

Reading books or writing letters help protect brain from Alzheimer’s and related dementias

A new study suggests that keeping mentally active by reading books or writing letters helps protect the brain in old age.

A lifetime of mental challenges leads to slower cognitive decline after factoring out dementia’s impact on the brain, US researchers say.

The study, published in Neurology, adds weight to the idea that dementia onset can be delayed by lifestyle factors.

An Alzheimer’s charity said the best way to lower dementia risk was to eat a balanced diet, exercise and stay slim.

In a US study, 294 people over the age of 55 were given tests that measured memory and thinking, every year for about six years until their deaths.

They also answered a questionnaire about whether they read books, wrote letters and took part in other activities linked to mental stimulation during childhood, adolescence, middle age, and in later life.

After death, their brains were examined for evidence of the physical signs of dementia, such as brain lesions and plaques.

The study found that after factoring out the impact of those signs, those who had a record of keeping the brain busy had a rate of cognitive decline estimated at 15% slower than those who did not.

Dr. Robert Wilson, of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, who led the study, said the research suggested exercising the brain across a lifetime was important for brain health in old age.

He said: “The brain that we have in old age depends in part on what we habitually ask it to do in life.

“What you do during your lifetime has a great impact on the likelihood these age-related diseases are going to be expressed.”
